You know friends it is not always easy to let go of the old 00:00:20.61\00:00:23.97 and take hold of the new. 00:00:24.00\00:00:25.55 Especially when it comes to technology today. 00:00:25.58\00:00:27.45 But this is exactly what Paul is calling us to do 00:00:27.48\00:00:30.59 in Hebrews Chapter 8. 00:00:30.62\00:00:31.81 He is asking us to embrace a new way of understanding God. 00:00:31.84\00:00:35.36 A new covenant, if you will. 00:00:35.39\00:00:36.77 I'm your co-host, James Rafferty with Ty Gibson, join us as we 00:00:36.80\00:00:39.92 study Hebrews Chapter 8. 00:00:39.95\00:00:41.61 James, in Hebrews Chapter 8 we, have an amazing development 00:00:41.64\00:00:45.89 of understanding in regards to the new covenant. 00:00:45.92\00:00:49.76 Here in Chapter 8 verses 1 and 2, the Apostle Paul begins 00:00:49.79\00:00:54.18 to lay his foundation, to build his case by informing us that 00:00:54.21\00:00:58.96 the main point, verse 1, "Of the things which we are 00:00:59.00\00:01:02.05 saying is this, We have such a high priest Who is seated at the 00:01:02.08\00:01:07.49 right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, 00:01:07.52\00:01:10.91 Who is a Minister of the Sanctuary and of the true 00:01:10.94\00:01:15.23 tabernacle which the Lord erected and not man. " 00:01:15.27\00:01:19.52 That's his beginning point, he wants to understand that we 00:01:19.56\00:01:22.76 are now dealing with a new High Priest, a superior 00:01:22.79\00:01:26.26 High Priest who is the minister of the sanctuary, the true 00:01:26.29\00:01:31.13 tabernacle in heaven. 00:01:31.16\00:01:32.40 Now even though we are not talking about embracing 00:01:32.43\00:01:34.29 new technology here, I-Pods and computers as such. 00:01:34.32\00:01:38.43 To the Hebrew mind this was huge because Paul was here 00:01:38.46\00:01:42.37 asking them to give up the old covenant, understanding, the old 00:01:42.41\00:01:46.88 sanctuary service, the old priesthood. 00:01:46.92\00:01:48.84 To see things in a whole different light, to embrace 00:01:48.87\00:01:51.19 a new priesthood. 00:01:51.22\00:01:52.32 The sum of everything that Paul was communicated to the Hebrews 00:01:52.35\00:01:56.07 was we have something better, we have a new High Priest. 00:01:56.10\00:02:00.11 A new ministry, a new sanctuary. 00:02:00.14\00:02:02.64 You know how difficult it can be when we are set in our ways? 00:02:02.67\00:02:05.73 To let go of old things and embrace new things. 00:02:05.76\00:02:08.07 This is something we definitely need to make a 00:02:08.10\00:02:10.40 transition on however. 00:02:10.43\00:02:12.13 We need to understand, that while the Bible presents to us, 00:02:12.16\00:02:16.00 especially in the book of Hebrews, the fact that on a 00:02:16.03\00:02:18.63 historic level, there is an old covenant and a new covenant. 00:02:18.66\00:02:22.87 That doesn't mean that the old covenant, new covenant 00:02:22.90\00:02:26.12 idea is confined to two different parts of history. 00:02:26.15\00:02:31.60 Actually, it is possible for me as an individual, for you 00:02:31.63\00:02:35.51 as an individual, for anyone of us as human beings, 00:02:35.54\00:02:38.64 to presently to be in an old covenant perception of God, 00:02:38.67\00:02:43.53 an old covenant frame of mind and experience with God 00:02:43.56\00:02:46.23 or in a new covenant experience with God. 00:02:46.26\00:02:48.84 We want to understand this from a very practical standpoint. 00:02:48.87\00:02:52.32 And grasp it as it has application for us. 00:02:52.35\00:02:56.47 And the only way we can really do that, I think, Ty, 00:02:56.50\00:02:59.47 is to really understand what the difference is between the 00:02:59.50\00:03:03.00 old and new covenant. 00:03:03.04\00:03:04.01 Fortunately friends, Paul makes it very, very clear 00:03:04.02\00:03:07.02 in the context of Hebrews Chapter 8. 00:03:07.05\00:03:09.07 If we move down here to Hebrews 8 and verse 6. 00:03:09.10\00:03:12.40 We are going to find him comparing the old testament, 00:03:12.43\00:03:15.95 old covenant experience with the new covenant experience. 00:03:15.99\00:03:19.71 It begins here in verse 6, He says, "Now he hath obtained" 00:03:19.74\00:03:22.65 that is Christ, "a more excellent ministry by how much 00:03:22.68\00:03:25.55 more He is also the Mediator of a better covenant, which was 00:03:25.59\00:03:29.81 established upon better promises. " 00:03:29.85\00:03:32.14 Better covenant, better promises! 00:03:32.17\00:03:34.39 We learned in a more previous time better here means superior 00:03:34.43\00:03:37.89 in strength so we have to have a superior covenant that is 00:03:37.92\00:03:42.08 based on superior promises. 00:03:42.11\00:03:44.88 Well what are these promises? 00:03:44.91\00:03:46.65 That's our first clue right there, that is our first 00:03:46.68\00:03:48.92 inclination to understand the difference between the 00:03:48.96\00:03:51.16 old and the new. 00:03:51.19\00:03:52.26 And verse 7 "For if the first covenant had been faultless, 00:03:52.29\00:03:55.39 then should no place been sought for the second. 00:03:55.42\00:03:57.81 for", verse 8, " finding fault with them," he said, "Behold 00:03:57.84\00:04:01.79 the day is come, said the Lord when I will make a new covenant 00:04:01.83\00:04:05.77 with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. " 00:04:05.81\00:04:08.14 So here's where we find an indication of the problem with 00:04:08.17\00:04:12.43 the old and why God wanted to make this change. 00:04:12.46\00:04:14.46 So the fault wasn't with the Lord, even in the old covenant. 00:04:14.49\00:04:18.94 The fault wasn't on the side of God and His ability to bring 00:04:18.97\00:04:23.80 to pass, what it was that He had entered 00:04:23.84\00:04:26.24 into by way of covenant. 00:04:26.28\00:04:27.81 Well the old covenant included the law of God 00:04:27.84\00:04:29.52 was at fault with the law of God, not with God, but His law. 00:04:29.56\00:04:32.60 Absolutely not, the law, according to Romans, Chapter 7 00:04:32.63\00:04:35.88 verse 12, and also in verse 14 the law is holy, just and good, 00:04:35.91\00:04:41.83 and verse 14 of Romans 7, the law is spiritual, there's 00:04:41.86\00:04:45.16 nothing inherently wrong with the law of God. 00:04:45.19\00:04:48.33 The problem exists within the human ability to actually 00:04:48.36\00:04:53.10 accomplish what the law mandates. 00:04:53.13\00:04:55.52 So when it says finding fault with them it's not talking about 00:04:55.56\00:04:58.69 finding fault with the Commandments, those are them? 00:04:58.73\00:05:00.74 Absolutely not! This is dealing specifically with the people 00:05:00.78\00:05:03.70 making promises to God that they could not 00:05:03.73\00:05:06.67 fulfill in their own strength. 00:05:06.70\00:05:08.17 That was the bad promise, in other words the fault was 00:05:08.21\00:05:11.20 found with them, being the people, 00:05:11.24\00:05:13.18 because they promised God what? 00:05:13.21\00:05:15.11 Well they very specifically, with a lot of vim and vigor 00:05:15.14\00:05:19.59 and determination, when they encountered God at Mount Sinai 00:05:19.62\00:05:23.24 and the Ten Commandments were delineated, they turned to Moses 00:05:23.27\00:05:28.22 and said, Moses all that the Lord has said, WE WILL DO. 00:05:28.25\00:05:33.10 And obey all His Commandments. 00:05:33.13\00:05:34.95 They actually meant it, I believe, just like we do. 00:05:34.98\00:05:38.47 They were sincere. 00:05:38.50\00:05:39.99 Just like Peter was. 00:05:40.02\00:05:41.42 They definitely intended to obey all the Commandments, 00:05:41.45\00:05:46.14 and do everything that God said. 00:05:46.17\00:05:47.68 But very, very shortly they discovered that they were 00:05:47.71\00:05:52.07 absolutely incapable of keeping the law in their own strength. 00:05:52.10\00:05:55.73 Now this is confirm time in verse 10, we won't jump there 00:05:55.76\00:05:58.56 to quickly, but in verse 10 when God describes the new 00:05:58.59\00:06:01.39 covenant, friends, do you know He what says? 00:06:01.42\00:06:02.84 He says the new covenant is about Me putting 00:06:02.87\00:06:04.76 My law in their hearts. 00:06:04.80\00:06:05.93 So it isn't the law that is being found fault with here. 00:06:05.96\00:06:08.97 It is people, it is us! 00:06:09.00\00:06:10.35 And of course today, as Ty said earlier, today we can have 00:06:10.38\00:06:13.57 old covenant experience, by making promises to God on a 00:06:13.61\00:06:16.79 spiritual level that we can't keep. 00:06:16.82\00:06:18.37 That's entering through an old covenant experience. 00:06:18.41\00:06:20.78 God wants to transcend us into the new covenant and it can 00:06:20.81\00:06:24.18 be difficult, I mean even me with an I-Pod, I have to get 00:06:24.21\00:06:27.54 my son to fiddle with it, to, to get it right. 00:06:27.57\00:06:31.11 My wife and I have cell phones, and often we get our son who 00:06:31.14\00:06:35.67 is about 15 years old, He's the one that's putting 00:06:35.70\00:06:38.23 all the information in these cell phones and showing us 00:06:38.26\00:06:40.79 how they work. 00:06:40.83\00:06:41.80 It's difficult for us if we are set in our ways to 00:06:41.81\00:06:44.49 transition to the new. 00:06:44.52\00:06:45.61 And we are definitely set in our ways as human beings 00:06:45.64\00:06:49.04 and the sin problem according to Scripture, is a very deep 00:06:49.07\00:06:53.03 dark pit that we get confined in. 00:06:53.06\00:06:55.27 Scripture actually says in one place James, that we are bound 00:06:55.30\00:06:58.91 with the cords of iniquity which kind of gives the idea that we 00:06:58.94\00:07:04.43 through habitual patterns, over and over again, I mean if you 00:07:04.46\00:07:08.25 wrap a string around someone's arms, they can easily break it. 00:07:08.28\00:07:12.43 But with repetition after repetition, after repetition, 00:07:12.46\00:07:14.83 many strings becomes a rope or a cable and then you find it 00:07:14.86\00:07:20.33 impossible to break free. 00:07:20.36\00:07:22.35 In our repetitive, habitual involvement with sin, not to 00:07:22.38\00:07:26.06 mention in our heredity tendency to sin, makes us 00:07:26.09\00:07:29.65 impotent to fulfill the law of God. 00:07:29.68\00:07:31.61 And the essence to this is self-dependence. 00:07:31.64\00:07:32.71 The essence of this is self sufficiency, the essence of this 00:07:32.74\00:07:35.71 is depending on what we can do on ourselves 00:07:35.75\00:07:38.14 and our faulty promises. 00:07:38.17\00:07:40.10 And God wants to break us free from those cords, He wants 00:07:40.13\00:07:42.84 to break us free from that self-sufficiency. 00:07:42.87\00:07:44.74 That's why Jesus came as a man and He said, "I can do nothing 00:07:44.77\00:07:47.87 of Myself, but I do everything the Father shows Me to do. " 00:07:47.90\00:07:51.00 I trust in Him, I trust in His power, He directs Me 00:07:51.03\00:07:54.30 My will is submitted to the Father, God is calling us to 00:07:54.33\00:07:57.61 the same experience. 00:07:57.65\00:07:58.93 The incredible background in the book of Hebrews 00:07:58.96\00:08:01.53 leading up to Chapter 8. 00:08:01.56\00:08:03.84 We have encountered an earlier chapter the fact that Jesus 00:08:03.87\00:08:08.50 Christ really took upon Himself our fallen human nature, 00:08:08.53\00:08:11.91 was tempted in all points like as we are, and yet was sinless. 00:08:11.95\00:08:16.43 Holy, harmless and undefiled. 00:08:16.47\00:08:18.44 Literally in Chapter 1, it says that He loved righteousness 00:08:18.47\00:08:21.81 and hated iniquity. 00:08:21.84\00:08:22.94 And yet it says that with strong crying and tears and struggle, 00:08:22.97\00:08:28.89 He fought the battle in human experience and was victorious 00:08:28.92\00:08:34.24 Now I love this context of the new and old covenant because 00:08:34.27\00:08:37.47 it tells us that the new covenant is all about experience 00:08:37.50\00:08:41.18 God wants us to have an experience with Him that is 00:08:41.21\00:08:44.23 different and it doesn't stop with just this intellectual 00:08:44.26\00:08:47.45 sent to, oh the law is holy the law is just, the law is good. 00:08:47.48\00:08:50.62 It continues to take us out of our self-sufficiency, get us to 00:08:50.65\00:08:55.99 turn to Jesus Christ, put our trust in Him, follow Him 00:08:56.02\00:08:58.47 and allow Him to come into our hearts and transform us 00:08:58.50\00:09:01.57 from the inside out. 00:09:01.60\00:09:02.57 Amen! And I love Galatians Chapter 2 and verse 20, 00:09:02.58\00:09:05.99 Which this is the statement for the Christian to latch on to and 00:09:06.03\00:09:13.33 claim as the promise of God. 00:09:13.36\00:09:14.97 It says there, "I am crucified with Christ," there's the 00:09:15.01\00:09:18.56 corporate element where all humanity was represented in 00:09:18.60\00:09:22.12 Jesus at the cross. 00:09:22.15\00:09:23.19 "I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live, yet not I," 00:09:23.22\00:09:28.34 Not I, Not self, not in my strength, not in my steam, not 00:09:28.37\00:09:33.45 in my ability, "Not I but Christ lives in me. " 00:09:33.48\00:09:38.47 Has taken up resident in my heart and soul as the powerful 00:09:38.50\00:09:42.59 guiding, motivating power inside of me. 00:09:42.62\00:09:45.75 Christ is in me and the life which I now live, 00:09:45.78\00:09:49.66 I live by faith in the Son of God, Who loved me and 00:09:49.69\00:09:55.31 gave himself for me. 00:09:55.35\00:09:57.34 Let's really understand this Ty. 00:09:57.37\00:09:58.73 Let's really understand this new covenant experience that God 00:09:58.76\00:10:01.52 wants us to have. 00:10:01.55\00:10:02.52 Let's look here as we continue on in verses 9 and 10. 00:10:02.53\00:10:05.36 "Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers, 00:10:05.39\00:10:07.93 in the day when I took them by the hand, 00:10:07.96\00:10:10.86 to lead them out of the land of Egypt, because they continued 00:10:10.89\00:10:14.22 not in my covenant I regarded them not says the Lord. " 00:10:14.25\00:10:17.62 There's confirmation of what we have been talking about. 00:10:17.65\00:10:19.98 They were the ones that did not continue. 00:10:20.02\00:10:21.84 They made the faulty promises, the old covenant was based on 00:10:21.87\00:10:25.66 the promises that the people and not on the power 00:10:25.69\00:10:28.23 and promise of God. 00:10:28.26\00:10:29.62 God is reminding us in this Chapter of a very significant 00:10:29.65\00:10:34.73 and vital part of the history of Israel and the secret of 00:10:34.76\00:10:39.11 their failure in the wilderness. 00:10:39.14\00:10:40.97 He says "I lead them out of Egypt by the hand," I took 00:10:41.00\00:10:45.31 them out of Egypt Myself and this is a direct reference to 00:10:45.35\00:10:49.51 the Passover experience in Exodus 16, and it is a direct 00:10:49.55\00:10:53.68 reference to the Ten Commandments. 00:10:53.72\00:10:55.85 The first Commandment specifically, where God says 00:10:55.88\00:10:59.55 to the Israelites, prepatory to giving the Ten Commandments, 00:10:59.58\00:11:02.52 He says in Commandment number 1, I am the Lord Who has 00:11:02.55\00:11:06.71 delivered you from Egyptian bondage and then the 00:11:06.74\00:11:11.03 Commandments followed. 00:11:11.06\00:11:12.27 God is telling us very clearly here that when He entered into 00:11:12.30\00:11:15.01 that old covenant with them, all the provision was there. 00:11:15.04\00:11:17.96 He was as willing with them, as He is with anybody else in 00:11:18.00\00:11:20.88 history, even in the New testament times. 00:11:20.92\00:11:22.86 He was as willing with them as eager and as powerful with them, 00:11:22.90\00:11:25.98 as He is eager to be with us. 00:11:26.01\00:11:28.86 The problem was, at that time, that they discerned the human 00:11:28.89\00:11:34.12 part of the equation. 00:11:34.16\00:11:35.33 They discerned what it was that God was commanding, but they 00:11:35.37\00:11:39.70 didn't discern those Commandments in the light of 00:11:39.73\00:11:42.15 the shed blood of the Passover Lamb, 00:11:42.18\00:11:44.75 and God's delivering of them, was the necessary power by which 00:11:44.78\00:11:49.96 they could keep the law. 00:11:49.99\00:11:52.14 So they depended on themselves. 00:11:52.17\00:11:53.85 They became self-sufficient. 00:11:53.88\00:11:55.49 God is wanting us to move away from that experience. 00:11:55.52\00:11:59.35 Now notice what it says here in verse 10. 00:11:59.38\00:12:00.73 "For this is the covenant thy will make with the house of 00:12:00.77\00:12:03.64 Israel after those days saith the Lord, I will put My laws 00:12:03.67\00:12:08.58 into their mind and write them in their hearts. " 00:12:08.62\00:12:11.58 "And I will be to them a God and they shall 00:12:11.62\00:12:14.87 be to Me a people. " 00:12:14.91\00:12:15.88 Now I want to just touch on the whole context of the 00:12:15.89\00:12:20.11 new covenant then go back and highlight each 00:12:20.14\00:12:22.22 one of these points. 00:12:22.25\00:12:23.22 And they, verse 11, "Shall not teach every man his neighbor, 00:12:23.23\00:12:26.53 and every man his brother saying know the Lord. " 00:12:26.57\00:12:29.12 "For all shall know Me from the least to the greatest. " 00:12:29.15\00:12:31.99 "And I will be merciful, verse 12, "to their 00:12:32.02\00:12:36.07 " unrighteousness and their sins and their iniquities 00:12:36.10\00:12:38.79 I will remember no more. " 00:12:38.82\00:12:40.97 Beautiful! Beautiful! 00:12:41.00\00:12:42.19 Full picture of what God wants for us, is experience. 00:12:42.22\00:12:46.00 We see here James, that God is very emphatic, 00:12:46.03\00:12:48.98 in taking upon Himself the responsibility that 00:12:49.01\00:12:52.37 only He can bear. 00:12:52.40\00:12:53.81 I love the fact that in verses 10 through 12, 00:12:53.84\00:12:57.42 five times the Lord says, I will, I will, I will, I will 00:12:57.45\00:13:02.71 I will, I am the One who's going to bring to pass this 00:13:02.74\00:13:05.84 new covenant, It's dependant on Me. 00:13:05.88\00:13:08.48 I Am your strength, I Am your power, I'm going to do this. 00:13:08.51\00:13:12.50 It's My promise, not yours. 00:13:12.53\00:13:14.86 You know new technology, Ty, I keep going back to this, 00:13:14.89\00:13:17.08 new technology can be difficult for us but it sure is a blessing 00:13:17.11\00:13:20.30 when we take hold of it. 00:13:20.33\00:13:21.33 I mean it sure is nice to have cell phones, it sure is nice 00:13:21.37\00:13:24.14 to have these computers and not to be able to be in contact 00:13:24.17\00:13:28.18 with people and not to be in danger of losing everything 00:13:28.21\00:13:31.46 you have because you have it written out and it's gone, but 00:13:31.49\00:13:33.53 you got stored somewhere and it is the same with the 00:13:33.56\00:13:36.80 new covenant friends, it is such a refreshing blessing to know 00:13:36.83\00:13:42.13 that God is the source of power that He is the One that is going 00:13:42.16\00:13:44.74 to do what He has promised to do, and we don't have to rely 00:13:44.77\00:13:47.95 upon ourselves and our power. 00:13:47.98\00:13:49.08 This is what Paul is introducing us to in Hebrews Chapter 8. 00:13:49.11\00:13:52.61 He is introducing us to a new experience that has always been 00:13:52.65\00:13:56.14 available, but we have failed to take hold of it. 00:13:56.18\00:13:59.03 It's time for us to take hold of it. 00:13:59.07\00:14:00.78 Don't go away, we'll be right back. 00:14:00.81\00:14:02.49
