saying is this, We have such a
high priest Who is seated at the

of the Majesty in the heavens,

Who is a Minister of the
Sanctuary and of the true

tabernacle which the
Lord erected and not man. "

That's his beginning point,
he wants to understand that we

are now dealing with a
new High Priest, a superior

High Priest who is the minister
of the sanctuary, the true

tabernacle in heaven.

not talking about embracing

new technology here,
I-Pods and computers as such.

To the Hebrew mind this
was huge because Paul was here

asking them to give up the old
covenant, understanding, the old

sanctuary service,
the old priesthood.

To see things in a whole
different light, to embrace

a new priesthood.

The sum of everything that Paul
was communicated to the Hebrews

was we have something better,
we have a new High Priest.

A new ministry, a new sanctuary.

You know how difficult it can
be when we are set in our ways?

To let go of old
things and embrace new things.

definitely need to make a

We need to understand, that
while the Bible presents to us,

especially in the book of
Hebrews, the fact that on a

historic level, there is an
old covenant and a new covenant.

That doesn't mean that
the old covenant, new covenant

idea is confined to two
different parts of history.

Actually, it is possible
for me as an individual, for you

as an individual, for
anyone of us as human beings,

to presently to be in an
old covenant perception of God,

an old covenant frame of
mind and experience with God

or in a new
covenant experience with God.

We want to understand this from
a very practical standpoint.

And grasp it as it
has application for us.

And the only way we can
really do that, I think, Ty,

is to really understand what
the difference is between the

old and new covenant.

Fortunately friends,
Paul makes it very, very clear

in the context of
Hebrews Chapter 8.

If we move down here
to Hebrews 8 and verse 6.

We are going to find him
comparing the old testament,

old covenant experience with
the new covenant experience.

It begins here in verse 6,
He says, "Now he hath obtained"

that is Christ, "a more
excellent ministry by how much

more He is also the Mediator
of a better covenant, which was

established upon
better promises. "

We learned in a more previous
time better here means superior

in strength so we have to
have a superior covenant that is

based on superior promises.

Well what are these promises?

That's our first clue
right there, that is our first

inclination to understand
the difference between the

old and the new.

And verse 7 "For if the first
covenant had been faultless,

been sought for the second.

for", verse 8, " finding fault
with them," he said, "Behold

when I will make a new covenant

and with the house of Judah. "

So here's where we find an
indication of the problem with

the old and why God
wanted to make this change.

So the fault wasn't with the
Lord, even in the old covenant.

The fault wasn't on the side
of God and His ability to bring

to pass, what it
was that He had entered

into by way of covenant.

Well the old covenant
included the law of God

was at fault with the law of
God, not with God, but His law.

Absolutely not, the law,
according to Romans, Chapter 7

verse 12, and also in verse 14
the law is holy, just and good,

and verse 14 of Romans 7,
the law is spiritual, there's

nothing inherently
wrong with the law of God.

The problem exists within
the human ability to actually

accomplish what
the law mandates.

So when it says finding fault
with them it's not talking about

finding fault with the
Commandments, those are them?

Absolutely not! This is dealing
specifically with the people

making promises to
God that they could not

fulfill in their own strength.

That was the bad promise,
in other words the fault was

found with them,
being the people,

because they promised God what?
00:05:13.21\00:05:15.11
Well they very specifically,
with a lot of vim and vigor
00:05:15.14\00:05:19.59
and determination, when they
encountered God at Mount Sinai
00:05:19.62\00:05:23.24
and the Ten Commandments were
delineated, they turned to Moses
00:05:23.27\00:05:28.22
and said, Moses all that
the Lord has said, WE WILL DO.
00:05:28.25\00:05:33.10
And obey all His Commandments.

They actually meant it,
I believe, just like we do.

They were sincere.
00:05:38.50\00:05:39.99
Just like Peter was.

They definitely intended
to obey all the Commandments,

and do everything that God said.

But very, very shortly
they discovered that they were

absolutely incapable of keeping
the law in their own strength.

Now this is confirm time in
verse 10, we won't jump there

to quickly, but in verse
10 when God describes the new

covenant, friends, do
you know He what says?

He says the new
covenant is about Me putting

My law in their hearts.

So it isn't the law that is
being found fault with here.

It is people, it is us!

And of course today, as Ty
said earlier, today we can have

old covenant experience,
by making promises to God on a

spiritual level
that we can't keep.

That's entering through
an old covenant experience.

God wants to transcend us
into the new covenant and it can

be difficult, I mean even
me with an I-Pod, I have to get

my son to fiddle with
it, to, to get it right.

My wife and I have cell phones,
and often we get our son who

is about 15 years old,
He's the one that's putting

all the information in
these cell phones and showing us

how they work.

It's difficult for us if
we are set in our ways to

transition to the new.

And we are definitely set
in our ways as human beings

and the sin problem according
to Scripture, is a very deep

dark pit that
we get confined in.

Scripture actually says in one
place James, that we are bound

with the cords of iniquity which
kind of gives the idea that we

through habitual patterns, over
and over again, I mean if you

wrap a string around someone's
arms, they can easily break it.

But with repetition after
repetition, after repetition,

many strings becomes a rope
or a cable and then you find it

impossible to break free.

In our repetitive, habitual
involvement with sin, not to

mention in our heredity
tendency to sin, makes us

impotent to
fulfill the law of God.

And the essence to
this is self-dependence.

The essence of this is self
sufficiency, the essence of this

is depending on what
we can do on ourselves

and our faulty promises.

And God wants to break us
free from those cords, He wants

to break us free from
that self-sufficiency.

That's why Jesus came as a man
and He said, "I can do nothing

of Myself, but I do everything
the Father shows Me to do. "

I trust in Him, I trust
in His power, He directs Me

My will is submitted to the
Father, God is calling us to

the same experience.

The incredible background
in the book of Hebrews

We have encountered an earlier
chapter the fact that Jesus

Christ really took upon
Himself our fallen human nature,

was tempted in all points like
as we are, and yet was sinless.

Holy, harmless and undefiled.

Literally in Chapter 1, it
says that He loved righteousness

and hated iniquity.

And yet it says that with strong
crying and tears and struggle,

He fought the battle in human
experience and was victorious

Now I love this context of
the new and old covenant because

it tells us that the new
covenant is all about experience

God wants us to have an
experience with Him that is

different and it doesn't
stop with just this intellectual

sent to, oh the law is holy the
law is just, the law is good.

It continues to take us out of
our self-sufficiency, get us to

turn to Jesus Christ, put
our trust in Him, follow Him

and allow Him to come into
our hearts and transform us

from the inside out.

the Christian to latch on to and

Ten Commandments.

as He is with anybody else in

eager and as powerful with them,

The problem was, at that time,
that they discerned the human

They discerned what it was that

God is wanting us to move
away from that experience.

Now I want to just touch
on the whole context of the

And they, verse 11, "Shall not
teach every man his neighbor,

brother saying know the Lord. "

the least to the greatest. "

merciful, verse 12, "to their

wants for us, is experience.

going to bring to pass this

new covenant,
It's dependant on Me.

power, I'm going to do this.

new technology can be difficult
for us but it sure is a blessing

cell phones, it sure is nice

to have these computers and
not to be able to be in contact

with people and not to be
in danger of losing everything

you have because you have it
written out and it's gone, but

you got stored somewhere
and it is the same with the

new covenant friends, it is such
a refreshing blessing to know

that God is the source of power
that He is the One that is going

to do what He has promised
to do, and we don't have to rely

upon ourselves and our power.

This is what Paul is introducing
us to in Hebrews Chapter 8.

He is introducing us to a new
experience that has always been

available, but we have
failed to take hold of it.
