Welcome back friends, in our first segment of our study of 00:00:01.98\00:00:03.97 Hebrews, Chapter 6 and 7. 00:00:04.00\00:00:06.29 We explored Jesus as our fore-runner, and we saw that 00:00:06.32\00:00:09.93 He is definitely seeking to draw us in to a personal 00:00:09.96\00:00:14.60 intimate relationship with the Presence, Capital P, 00:00:14.63\00:00:18.25 the Presence of God, behind the veil and He has brought 00:00:18.28\00:00:22.13 back a good report, He has good news for us, 00:00:22.16\00:00:24.72 and the good news is, that God is friendly, the Father Himself 00:00:24.75\00:00:29.05 loves you, so come on in to the Presence of God boldly 00:00:29.08\00:00:33.65 and consummate this relationship that has been 00:00:33.68\00:00:37.13 in God's heart all along. 00:00:37.16\00:00:38.87 Right towards the end of Chapter 6 and into Chapter 7 00:00:38.90\00:00:42.51 we hear about this priest king called Melchisedec. 00:00:42.54\00:00:46.04 Now this is a mysterious persona in the Old Testament. 00:00:46.07\00:00:50.88 This someone has been questioned quite a bit. 00:00:50.91\00:00:54.03 Who was Melchisedec? 00:00:54.06\00:00:55.51 Where did he come from? 00:00:55.54\00:00:57.50 It says right here, in Chapter 7 beginning with verse 1 "For this 00:00:57.53\00:01:01.00 Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, 00:01:01.03\00:01:03.15 who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings 00:01:03.18\00:01:06.16 and blest him, to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of 00:01:06.19\00:01:09.27 all; first being by interpretation King of 00:01:09.30\00:01:11.20 righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, 00:01:11.23\00:01:14.25 King of Peace; was without father," verse 3, "without 00:01:14.29\00:01:16.75 mother, without descent, 00:01:16.79\00:01:17.98 having neither beginning of days, nor end 00:01:18.02\00:01:20.12 of life; but made like unto the Son of God; 00:01:20.15\00:01:22.72 and abided a priest continually. " 00:01:22.75\00:01:25.19 Now this is mysterious Ty. 00:01:25.22\00:01:26.86 This is mysterious. 00:01:26.89\00:01:28.43 Without beginning without end, without mother without 00:01:28.46\00:01:30.62 father, and so there is a lot of mystery surrounding 00:01:30.65\00:01:33.50 Melchisedec. Who was Melchisedec? 00:01:33.53\00:01:35.03 I think the point that Paul is trying to make is 00:01:35.06\00:01:37.17 that Melchisedec was a unique kind of priest because 00:01:37.20\00:01:43.01 Melchisedec was both a King and a priest. 00:01:43.04\00:01:45.97 King and a mediator. 00:01:46.00\00:01:47.89 Whereas the Levitical priesthood, the sons of Aaron, 00:01:47.92\00:01:52.15 were merely mediators, they were in a priesthood role, 00:01:52.19\00:01:55.69 but they were not of the tribe of Judah for example, 00:01:55.73\00:01:59.20 which was the tribe that kings descended from. 00:01:59.23\00:02:02.88 So why is that so significant? 00:02:02.91\00:02:04.02 It's significant because what Paul is doing is He is invoking 00:02:04.06\00:02:07.91 the idea here of King and priest to bring to our attention 00:02:07.95\00:02:11.77 justice and mercy meeting together in the 00:02:11.80\00:02:16.75 Lord Jesus Christ. 00:02:16.78\00:02:17.88 His priesthood marries justice and mercy together. 00:02:17.91\00:02:21.61 Because? 00:02:21.64\00:02:22.90 Because Jesus, is Himself God. 00:02:22.93\00:02:25.65 Chapter 1 of Hebrews has informed us, He is Himself 00:02:25.68\00:02:30.07 One Who loves righteousness and hates iniquity. 00:02:30.10\00:02:32.88 He is, later on in Chapter 6, holy, harmless, and undefiled. 00:02:32.91\00:02:36.71 In Chapter 4 He is tempted in all points as we are but 00:02:36.74\00:02:40.33 He is without sin. 00:02:40.36\00:02:41.33 Jesus is, on the one hand, He's a king, He's fully invested in 00:02:41.34\00:02:47.33 justice, He's not in any way fallen as a sinner, and yet 00:02:47.36\00:02:51.73 at the same time, having passed through the human 00:02:51.76\00:02:54.90 experience, He occupies a mediatorial role that is just 00:02:54.93\00:02:58.87 saturated with compassion, with sympathy, with mercy. 00:02:58.90\00:03:02.07 He's the priest, that's right. 00:03:02.10\00:03:03.41 And that's interesting because in the Old Testament 00:03:03.44\00:03:04.76 kings couldn't be priests and priests couldn't be kings. 00:03:04.79\00:03:07.12 That's right! 00:03:07.15\00:03:08.19 And yet, in the New Testament even believers are called to be 00:03:08.22\00:03:10.50 priests and kings after the order of Christ, we could say. 00:03:10.53\00:03:14.33 Christians, and Christ here has established Hebrews Chapter 7, 00:03:14.36\00:03:18.66 as both a king and a priest, One who is just, One who 00:03:18.69\00:03:21.81 exercises the laws of the land and enforces those laws. 00:03:21.84\00:03:24.63 But also One Who is merciful. 00:03:24.66\00:03:26.58 One Who loves, has compassion upon, and reaches 00:03:26.61\00:03:29.50 out to humanity. 00:03:29.53\00:03:30.72 It's highly likely that Paul is drawing this idea 00:03:30.75\00:03:33.70 from Zechariah Chapter 6. 00:03:33.73\00:03:35.51 Because in Zechariah Chapter 6, we have a Messianic prophecy 00:03:35.54\00:03:38.98 that foretells Jesus coming and it is very interesting 00:03:39.01\00:03:42.48 because in Chapter 6 of Zechariah, verse 12 it says this 00:03:42.51\00:03:47.15 "Thus says the LORD of hosts, saying:" Now this is the Lord, 00:03:47.18\00:03:51.18 This is God speaking, "Behold the Man" First of all we have 00:03:51.21\00:03:55.89 the humanity of the Messiah, being highlighted. 00:03:55.92\00:04:00.16 "Behold the Man whose name is the BRANCH." And the reason 00:04:00.19\00:04:04.76 why His name is the BRANCH, it says, is from His place, from 00:04:04.79\00:04:09.23 His ministry, from His position in humanity as our Savior, 00:04:09.26\00:04:12.83 He shall branch out. 00:04:12.86\00:04:14.66 This is going to be an extensive ministry which is 00:04:14.69\00:04:18.01 going to take in the whole human race. 00:04:18.04\00:04:20.05 And He shall build the temple of the Lord, which we looked 00:04:20.08\00:04:24.13 at in the previous part of Hebrews, Jesus is in Chapter 3 00:04:24.16\00:04:27.89 the builder of the house of God, which house 00:04:27.92\00:04:31.35 we are Paul says. 00:04:31.38\00:04:32.58 We are a temple of the Lord and then verse 13 00:04:32.61\00:04:35.51 It says that yes, He shall build the temple of the Lord 00:04:35.54\00:04:40.79 and He shall bear the glory which is the theme that is also 00:04:40.82\00:04:44.73 brought out in the book of Hebrews. 00:04:44.76\00:04:46.10 Jesus in Chapter 1 is the expressed image of God's person 00:04:46.13\00:04:49.92 and the brightness of His glory. 00:04:49.95\00:04:51.02 And notice, He shall sit and rule on His throne, so He 00:04:51.05\00:04:57.63 shall be a priest on His throne. 00:04:57.66\00:05:00.06 And the counsel of peace shall be between them both. 00:05:00.09\00:05:05.94 Now the both here in the context is the kingly role 00:05:05.97\00:05:11.14 He shall sit upon His throne and rule, and the priestly 00:05:11.17\00:05:14.42 role, He shall be a priest on His throne. 00:05:14.45\00:05:17.64 Okay so we are looking at Zechariah 6 verses 12 and 13. 00:05:17.67\00:05:21.10 Zechariah is just back from the book of Matthew. 00:05:21.13\00:05:24.17 Matthew, Malachi, Zechariah and we are looking at these 00:05:24.20\00:05:26.91 two verses that seem to pin point, to direct us to what 00:05:26.94\00:05:31.22 is taking place in Hebrews Chapter 7. 00:05:31.25\00:05:32.86 That we have Christ in the role of priest and king so that the 00:05:32.89\00:05:37.34 counsel of peace can be between the priesthood and the kingship. 00:05:37.37\00:05:40.33 having justice and mercy. 00:05:40.36\00:05:41.99 In other words, it's not so important who Melchizedek is 00:05:42.02\00:05:45.79 but what he represents. 00:05:45.82\00:05:47.29 What he points to, what he directs us to. 00:05:47.32\00:05:49.48 He directs us to a ruler ship, if you will, he directs us to a 00:05:49.52\00:05:54.04 reign of grace that is, that is mingled with, that is in 00:05:54.07\00:05:59.85 partnership with justice. 00:05:59.89\00:06:01.77 In other words we have mercy and justice coming together. 00:06:01.80\00:06:04.46 Isn't that Psalm 85? 00:06:04.49\00:06:05.78 That's right 85:10. 00:06:05.81\00:06:07.06 Psalm 85:10 we have mercy and justice coming together and 00:06:07.09\00:06:10.07 that's what we see in the cross. 00:06:10.11\00:06:11.60 We see God be merciful and we see God being just. 00:06:11.64\00:06:14.78 Punishing sin in Himself, the Son of God, as well as being 00:06:14.81\00:06:19.77 merciful to those who have sinned. 00:06:19.80\00:06:21.18 This thing is picked up in a beautiful way in the book of 00:06:21.21\00:06:23.84 Romans as well, while specifically in Chapter 3, 00:06:23.87\00:06:26.30 because using slightly different language, in order to fill out 00:06:26.34\00:06:29.67 the concept, Paul says in Romans 3, that God through 00:06:29.70\00:06:33.81 Christ is both just and the justifier 00:06:33.84\00:06:37.57 of those who believe in Jesus. 00:06:37.61\00:06:38.99 So He is just, He maintains His justice, but simultaneously 00:06:39.02\00:06:43.71 maintaining that justice, He has mercy by which He freely 00:06:43.74\00:06:48.50 justifies fallen human beings and draws them back into a 00:06:48.53\00:06:53.22 relationship with Himself. 00:06:53.25\00:06:54.24 Okay so Paul says in verse 4 of Hebrews 7, now consider how 00:06:54.27\00:06:58.37 great this man was. 00:06:58.40\00:06:59.48 That's what we have been doing. 00:06:59.51\00:07:00.61 We are not trying to figure out where he came from 00:07:00.64\00:07:02.71 We are trying to consider how great he was. 00:07:02.74\00:07:04.72 In other words, the breath of his ministry, what he represents 00:07:04.75\00:07:08.95 because it points to Jesus Christ. 00:07:08.98\00:07:10.20 Consider who great this man was, and what is the 00:07:10.24\00:07:12.81 consideration he directs us to next. 00:07:12.85\00:07:14.34 Unto even the Patriarch Abraham gave tenths of the spoils, 00:07:14.37\00:07:18.71 That is a tithe. 00:07:18.74\00:07:19.74 He paid the tithe. 00:07:19.78\00:07:20.75 Abraham paid a tithe, yes, he says in verse 5. 00:07:20.76\00:07:23.93 We who are sons of Levi received the office of the priesthood 00:07:23.97\00:07:27.34 and have the commandment to receive tithes of the people 00:07:27.38\00:07:29.47 according to the law that is of their brethren, 00:07:29.51\00:07:32.23 though they came out of the loins of Abraham, 00:07:32.26\00:07:34.28 but whose descendent is not counted them, but here it says 00:07:34.31\00:07:37.83 that Abraham paid tithes to Melchizedek. 00:07:37.87\00:07:41.57 Now notice this, without contradiction, the less is 00:07:41.60\00:07:45.70 blest of the greater. 00:07:45.74\00:07:46.83 And here men die who receive tithes but he received them 00:07:46.86\00:07:50.91 of whom it is written. 00:07:50.94\00:07:51.94 He lives, and this is what I say, that Levi also, verse 9, 00:07:51.97\00:07:56.62 who received tithes, paid tithes in Abraham. 00:07:56.65\00:07:59.96 For he was in the loins of his father when 00:07:59.99\00:08:03.30 Melchizedek met him. 00:08:03.34\00:08:04.34 Now this is so powerful in the context of the gospel. 00:08:04.37\00:08:09.79 example of some of Paul's complex reasoning and complex 00:08:09.83\00:08:15.22 language that Peter kind of told us we should expect 00:08:15.26\00:08:18.87 from Paul, so we really need to break down the reasoning 00:08:18.91\00:08:21.86 that Paul's going through here and why it is and how it is 00:08:21.89\00:08:24.81 and why it is important that Abraham paid 00:08:24.85\00:08:28.50 tithes to Melchizedek. 00:08:28.54\00:08:31.21 I mean in what sense? 00:08:31.24\00:08:32.39 Or Levi paid tithes to Melchizedek. 00:08:32.42\00:08:35.57 What is powerful here in the context of the gospel is 00:08:35.60\00:08:38.42 Levi was not alive when Abraham paid tithes to Melchizedek. 00:08:38.45\00:08:41.45 Levi was in the loins of Abraham, in other words he was 00:08:41.48\00:08:45.87 simply unborn, he was going to be born later on. 00:08:45.90\00:08:51.02 When Abraham paid tithes to Melchizedek, what Paul is saying 00:08:51.06\00:08:53.85 here is that Levi did too. 00:08:53.89\00:08:55.32 In other words, everything that Abraham did was accounted to 00:08:55.35\00:08:58.31 Levi before he was born. 00:08:58.34\00:08:59.76 There's a corporate sense in which the Bible speaks of the 00:08:59.79\00:09:04.09 human race, there's a corporate sense in which the Bible speaks 00:09:04.12\00:09:07.81 of any given nation, and here Abraham, the beginning of the 00:09:07.84\00:09:11.70 Hebrew people, that God is founding as a nation 00:09:11.74\00:09:14.46 Abraham is an individual in whom the whole of 00:09:14.49\00:09:19.48 Israel is represented. 00:09:19.52\00:09:20.87 Everything future to Abraham is attributed to Abraham. 00:09:20.90\00:09:23.91 That's right, now the reason this is so important, the 00:09:23.94\00:09:26.87 reason why Paul was calling us to consider this is because 00:09:26.91\00:09:29.93 this is what the gospel is all about. 00:09:29.96\00:09:31.67 In the gospel Jesus Christ, we have accounted to us, 00:09:31.70\00:09:35.73 everything that Jesus did. 00:09:35.76\00:09:37.12 When we accept Christ as our Savior, when we are in Christ 00:09:37.15\00:09:40.95 everything that He did is accounted to us so that just 00:09:40.98\00:09:44.31 like Levi, who wasn't even alive, because he is connected 00:09:44.34\00:09:48.43 with Abraham, paid tithes to Melchizedek, because Abraham 00:09:48.46\00:09:50.78 paid tithes to Melchizedek. 00:09:50.82\00:09:51.91 Just so we, even before we were alive, we obeyed the law of God, 00:09:51.94\00:09:57.70 we are perfect, pure and holy before God, are justified before 00:09:57.73\00:10:01.67 God, or are accepted before God, or are God's beloved when we 00:10:01.70\00:10:05.40 accept Jesus Christ for what He did for us. 00:10:05.43\00:10:08.03 Yeah, 2 Corinthians Chapter 5, says in verse 14, "for the love 00:10:08.06\00:10:13.52 of Christ compels us because we judge thus that if one 00:10:13.55\00:10:18.29 died for all then all died. " 00:10:18.32\00:10:20.68 Now this is very strange language for Westerners to 00:10:20.71\00:10:24.61 comprehend, because we don't think in terms of anything being 00:10:24.64\00:10:28.29 done for anyone unless it is done in their immediate context 00:10:28.32\00:10:32.96 and by themselves. 00:10:32.99\00:10:33.96 But the corporate language of Scripture is such that Paul 00:10:33.97\00:10:36.87 can say in verse 14 here in 2 Corinthians Chapter 5 verse 14 00:10:36.90\00:10:41.51 that when Jesus died, everyone died in a sense. 00:10:41.54\00:10:46.39 Now we didn't die literally at the cross. 00:10:46.43\00:10:48.88 Jesus died, but He died as a human being. 00:10:48.91\00:10:51.56 He has died as a true partaker of human nature and so in a 00:10:51.59\00:10:58.28 representative sense, the whole human race was represented 00:10:58.31\00:11:01.95 in the person of Jesus Christ. 00:11:01.98\00:11:03.58 Through His life, and His death, in His resurrection, 00:11:03.61\00:11:06.94 in His ascension, anyone who by faith wants to be identified 00:11:06.97\00:11:12.20 with Jesus certainly can by God's promise. 00:11:12.23\00:11:15.11 And that is why we have 1 Corinthians Chapter 1 00:11:15.14\00:11:17.67 telling us that Jesus Christ 00:11:17.71\00:11:19.71 is our wisdom, our righteousness, our 00:11:19.75\00:11:22.44 justification, our sanctification. 00:11:22.48\00:11:24.24 He's our everything. 00:11:24.27\00:11:25.24 Jesus Christ is everything and what we are called to do is 00:11:25.25\00:11:28.59 to be in Christ. 00:11:28.62\00:11:29.59 To accept Christ as our Savior and then all that is attributed 00:11:30.21\00:11:33.99 to us just like Levi paid tithes in Abraham's time. 00:11:34.02\00:11:36.65 So we have Christ as our obedience as our righteousness. 00:11:36.68\00:11:40.44 So the Apostle Paul comes to the conclusion in Chapter 7 00:11:40.47\00:11:44.19 and he tells us in verses 25-27 that number 1, because of Who 00:11:44.22\00:11:50.07 Jesus is as our high Priest. 00:11:50.10\00:11:51.56 He is able to save to the utter most. 00:11:51.59\00:11:53.41 Completely, totally saved to the uttermost. 00:11:53.45\00:11:56.85 Secondly, He informs us that He is holy, harmless, and undefiled 00:11:56.88\00:12:01.52 and separate from sinners. 00:12:01.55\00:12:02.94 And thirdly, that He made a once for all sacrifice 00:12:02.98\00:12:09.60 for the human race. 00:12:09.64\00:12:10.69 And we having been human beings who have fallen in sin, find 00:12:10.72\00:12:15.88 ourselves represented in Christ dying for us, 00:12:15.92\00:12:19.06 He died for all once. 00:12:19.10\00:12:20.32 Once for all, once for all friends, I want you to say that 00:12:20.35\00:12:22.93 over and over again, once for all. 00:12:22.96\00:12:24.88 And that includes me and that includes you. 00:12:24.91\00:12:27.26 Jesus is your Savior, He is my Savior, let us by faith 00:12:27.29\00:12:32.43 accept Him as such, and be saved by His grace to the uttermost. 00:12:32.46\00:12:37.58
