Welcome friends to books of the book 00:00:21.10\00:00:23.03 The program that explores the bible one book at a time 00:00:23.06\00:00:26.53 I'm Ty Gibson and with me today is my co-Host James Rafferty. 00:00:26.56\00:00:30.79 And we are in the midst of a study in the book of Hebrews. 00:00:30.82\00:00:35.04 And James we are about in chapter 6, the latter part, 00:00:35.07\00:00:37.84 Let's just launch right in. 00:00:37.87\00:00:39.42 Yes grab your bible, a listening ear and let's look 00:00:39.45\00:00:41.79 At Hebrews chapter 6, so far Paul has admonished the 00:00:41.82\00:00:45.49 believers in Hebrews to not be slothful, be diligent, to 00:00:45.52\00:00:49.12 get back into the Word of God, he's couched this with assurance 00:00:49.16\00:00:53.63 with encouragement, he said I am sure I have faith that you 00:00:53.66\00:00:56.92 guys can do better than you have been doing, of course 00:00:56.95\00:00:59.46 that's very important whenever we are seeking 00:00:59.49\00:01:01.85 to encourage others, to be more diligent. 00:01:01.88\00:01:04.56 Then he goes into, verse 13, promises 00:01:04.59\00:01:07.24 that God is making to us. 00:01:07.27\00:01:08.51 He says here, "for when God made promises to Abraham, 00:01:08.55\00:01:11.83 because He could swear by no greater, He swear by Himself, 00:01:11.86\00:01:14.60 saying, surely blessing I will bless thee, verse 14, 00:01:14.63\00:01:17.70 and multiplying I will multiply thee. " 00:01:17.73\00:01:20.38 This is really vital James, because according to scripture, 00:01:20.42\00:01:23.05 God has admonished us, not to make oaths, I mean we as 00:01:23.08\00:01:27.62 human beings are very, very likely to have an expanded 00:01:27.65\00:01:33.85 or an inflated idea of what we are capable of. 00:01:33.88\00:01:36.55 God is the one Who's making the promises here. 00:01:36.58\00:01:40.22 God is the promise-Keeper. 00:01:40.25\00:01:42.81 Many times our promises are like ropes of sand. 00:01:42.85\00:01:45.41 it's almost impossible to climb up on anything when you are 00:01:45.45\00:01:49.15 holding on to a rope of sand. 00:01:49.19\00:01:50.66 That's right! 00:01:50.69\00:01:51.66 And so it's not wrong for us, in a sense, it's not wrong 00:01:51.67\00:01:53.86 for us to make promises, perhaps to one another, 00:01:53.90\00:01:55.82 I make promises to my children 00:01:55.86\00:01:57.24 all the time and I try to keep them. 00:01:57.28\00:01:58.82 but when it comes to spiritual things, we cannot 00:01:58.85\00:02:02.20 make promises to God because we are not promise-Keepers. 00:02:02.23\00:02:04.96 when it comes to our relationship on a 00:02:04.99\00:02:06.80 spiritual level, with God. 00:02:06.83\00:02:08.24 Very strong language is used here, in which God is describing 00:02:08.27\00:02:12.21 how He is approaching us. 00:02:12.24\00:02:14.19 God is saying I am going to swear an oath and that oath 00:02:14.22\00:02:19.27 is immutable, that oath is unchangeable, it absolutely 00:02:19.30\00:02:23.46 will be brought to pass, what I say, the words that go 00:02:23.50\00:02:27.63 out of my mouth will not return void, they will 00:02:27.66\00:02:30.15 accomplish the purpose for which I have sent them forth. 00:02:30.18\00:02:32.88 And that is why God can swear. 00:02:32.91\00:02:34.45 In the Bible, old and new testament, we find that God does 00:02:34.48\00:02:37.55 make these types of oaths because He can be trusted 00:02:37.58\00:02:41.38 to accomplish what He says, 00:02:41.42\00:02:43.79 where as we, we are told by Jesus in Matthew, chapter 5 00:02:43.82\00:02:47.05 for example, 33-37, swear not at all, neither by 00:02:47.08\00:02:50.29 heaven nor by earth. 00:02:50.32\00:02:51.29 Why? Because we cannot make one of our hairs white or black. 00:02:51.32\00:02:55.84 but God is able to bring to past what He says. 00:02:55.88\00:02:59.58 So God can be trusted, man cannot. 00:02:59.61\00:03:02.09 The Bible brings this out in many different ways. 00:03:02.12\00:03:04.66 But one of the themes of scripture is the weakness of 00:03:04.69\00:03:10.21 human beings to accomplish their own salvation, to 00:03:10.24\00:03:13.61 deal affectively with sin, but God's effectual power, 00:03:13.64\00:03:18.48 to deal with the sin problem, we have already noticed in the 00:03:18.51\00:03:22.06 book of Hebrews, in chapter 1, that Jesus Christ, and I love 00:03:22.09\00:03:25.55 this language, by HIMSELF, purged our sins. 00:03:25.59\00:03:29.51 And then later on in Hebrews, leading up through Chapter 4, 00:03:29.54\00:03:32.94 we're simply called upon, by faith, to put ourselves in 00:03:32.97\00:03:37.43 Christ, to put ourselves in a position of confidence, 00:03:37.46\00:03:40.37 a position of trust and a position, 00:03:40.41\00:03:42.81 Paul says in Hebrews 4, of rest. 00:03:42.84\00:03:45.17 Absolutely and I really like this, because the word 00:03:45.20\00:03:48.21 immutable means unchangeable. 00:03:48.24\00:03:50.72 And you can only rest when you have that kind of environment, 00:03:50.75\00:03:55.52 an environment that is trust- worthy, an environment that is 00:03:55.55\00:03:58.03 stable, an environment that is unchangeable. 00:03:58.06\00:04:01.13 Whenever you are in an environment that is, Oh, uneasy, 00:04:01.16\00:04:05.20 we find ourselves unable to rest. 00:04:05.23\00:04:08.01 I find myself not sure about what the future holds, 00:04:08.04\00:04:11.90 and that makes me restless. 00:04:11.93\00:04:13.26 So God establishes, by His word, by His promises, oath, on these 00:04:13.29\00:04:18.32 two immutable things, these unchangeable things, His word 00:04:18.36\00:04:21.08 in an oath, He establish us in a stable environment. 00:04:21.11\00:04:24.35 James, Paul is laying ground work here for later comments 00:04:24.38\00:04:28.83 he's going to make on the new covenant, and one of the themes 00:04:28.86\00:04:32.09 of the Book of Hebrews is that the essence of the new covenant 00:04:32.12\00:04:37.18 is that it is based on God's promises and God's power, 00:04:37.21\00:04:41.37 God's better promises, better than our promises to God, 00:04:41.40\00:04:44.87 And that the Lord is able to bring to pass exactly what it is 00:04:44.90\00:04:49.66 that He has established as a purpose for us. 00:04:49.69\00:04:52.70 We see the Old Testament experience of Israel for example 00:04:52.73\00:04:56.32 that the old covenant was characterized in the 00:04:56.35\00:04:59.77 Book of Exodus, by their promise to God were they said, all 00:04:59.80\00:05:05.21 the Lord has said we will do and obey all His commandments 00:05:05.24\00:05:08.89 Well we know from the Biblical record that they in fact did not 00:05:08.92\00:05:13.16 fulfill that very grandiose promise to God. 00:05:13.19\00:05:16.39 Absolutely! 00:05:16.42\00:05:17.67 So we move forward in Scripture and we see God turning the 00:05:17.70\00:05:21.48 tables and saying now, I will forgive your sins and iniquities 00:05:21.51\00:05:25.71 I will cast them into the depths of the sea, 00:05:25.74\00:05:28.17 I will remember them no more, 00:05:28.20\00:05:29.77 and I will give you a new heart, and I will write my law 00:05:29.80\00:05:35.29 in your heart, that is a promise from God, that He 00:05:35.33\00:05:39.04 intends to bring to pass. 00:05:39.07\00:05:40.39 And that's why Paul, in verse 18, calls these immutable 00:05:40.42\00:05:44.98 things a strong constellation. 00:05:45.01\00:05:47.69 A strong constellation and a refuge that we are to lay hold 00:05:47.72\00:05:53.15 on as a hope that is set before us. 00:05:53.18\00:05:55.14 I love this terminology here, we have strong constellation 00:05:55.17\00:05:58.35 we have a refuge, we have a hope in Jesus Christ, 00:05:58.38\00:06:01.01 all of this is centered around the promises of God, the oath 00:06:01.04\00:06:05.65 of God that is immutable, unchangeable that is given to 00:06:05.68\00:06:09.86 us today, in His word. 00:06:09.89\00:06:11.09 Then Paul launches into a very powerful statement in 00:06:11.12\00:06:16.31 verses 19 and 20, that we want to explore. 00:06:16.34\00:06:19.11 He says in verse 19, "This hope we have as an anchor of 00:06:19.15\00:06:24.95 the soul, both sure and steadfast," there's that 00:06:24.99\00:06:28.24 confidence language again, " in God's immutable oath, 00:06:28.27\00:06:30.77 sure and steadfast, and which enters the presence 00:06:30.80\00:06:34.44 behind the veil;" 00:06:34.47\00:06:36.58 and then verse 20, "Where the forerunner 00:06:36.61\00:06:40.22 has entered for us, even Jesus, having become high priest 00:06:40.26\00:06:46.32 for ever according to the order of Melchisedec. " 00:06:46.36\00:06:50.26 So right here James, in verse 19, He's telling us that our 00:06:50.29\00:06:54.14 hope is a hope that reaches in through the veil 00:06:54.17\00:06:59.19 into the very presence of God where Jesus has entered for us. 00:06:59.22\00:07:02.72 Now this is where we are making a transition, now, we are taking 00:07:02.75\00:07:05.63 the Word of God, we are taking the oath of God, we are taking 00:07:05.66\00:07:07.96 strong constellation God has given us in Jesus, and now 00:07:07.99\00:07:11.37 we are taking it somewhere. 00:07:11.41\00:07:12.64 We are taking it into a phase of ministry, a phase of the 00:07:12.67\00:07:16.28 gospel, an understanding of truth, that has to do with 00:07:16.32\00:07:20.09 Christ in heaven, Christ in the presence of God for us 00:07:20.12\00:07:23.86 as our high priest. 00:07:23.90\00:07:25.23 We need to explore a little bit, the language that is being 00:07:25.26\00:07:28.17 used here, because we have a Presence, Capital P this is 00:07:28.20\00:07:32.55 obviously the Shikina presence of God, and we have this 00:07:32.58\00:07:36.34 Presence behind the veil. 00:07:36.38\00:07:38.32 This is sanctuary language. 00:07:38.35\00:07:40.23 This is temple language and it is bringing to our attention 00:07:40.26\00:07:43.59 the old Testament sanctuary service as a symbolic type 00:07:43.63\00:07:47.69 In which the Christian experience, the spiritual 00:07:47.73\00:07:50.72 experience of God's people, 00:07:50.75\00:07:52.24 was represented, or symbolized, by kind of a journey, a path, 00:07:52.27\00:07:56.36 or a way, and the believer is called upon by faith, 00:07:56.39\00:08:00.70 to follow the priest, in a series of moves, beyond or 00:08:00.73\00:08:05.52 through a series of three veils or curtains. 00:08:05.55\00:08:08.59 First into the courtyard, then into the holy place, 00:08:08.62\00:08:11.93 and finally into the Most holy place to the Shikina 00:08:11.96\00:08:15.32 presence of God. 00:08:15.35\00:08:16.32 This is exactly what Paul is seeking to do friends. 00:08:16.33\00:08:18.90 Paul is seeking to lead us from the earthly sanctuary 00:08:18.94\00:08:21.45 from the earthly priesthood, from that type to the heavenly 00:08:21.49\00:08:24.95 reality, he is seeking to lead us from everything that 00:08:24.99\00:08:27.78 was typified in the Levitical priesthood in the earthly 00:08:27.82\00:08:30.54 sanctuary to the reality that we have in Jesus Christ, through 00:08:30.58\00:08:33.77 these veils in the heavenly sanctuary. 00:08:33.80\00:08:35.99 This raises the question James, Why is it that we are separated 00:08:36.02\00:08:41.87 from God, by a veil? What's the meaning of this veil 00:08:41.90\00:08:45.92 and why is it that we as human beings have to be 00:08:45.95\00:08:49.90 in this separated state from God and then make some kind 00:08:49.94\00:08:53.87 of journey back to where we belong? 00:08:53.90\00:08:56.40 We have separated ourselves our sins have separated 00:08:56.43\00:08:59.51 ourselves from God. 00:08:59.54\00:09:00.51 We have pulled away from Him, and God is laying this out 00:09:00.52\00:09:04.21 in a type so that we can see how it is that we can make 00:09:04.24\00:09:07.48 this journey back to Him. 00:09:07.51\00:09:08.60 God is not very far from anyone of us, but He sees that sin 00:09:08.63\00:09:12.43 has affected us and broken that relationship that we 00:09:12.46\00:09:15.14 once had with Him. 00:09:15.17\00:09:16.14 What is it, is it Isaiah 59:2 I believe it is? 00:09:16.15\00:09:18.67 Were it says your sins have separated between you and your 00:09:18.70\00:09:23.59 God, your iniquity, has caused you to, what does it say? 00:09:23.63\00:09:27.35 Be blind to Him, you don't see Him, I can't remember 00:09:27.38\00:09:31.07 the exact language but the idea is separation. 00:09:31.11\00:09:33.07 What is so powerful about Isaiah 59:2 is the context verse 1 00:09:33.10\00:09:36.78 says "the Lords hand is not shorten that He cannot save, 00:09:36.81\00:09:40.46 neither is His ear heavy that He cannot hear. " 00:09:40.49\00:09:43.12 In other words, God isn't far from us, He is very close to us. 00:09:43.15\00:09:46.25 He isn't distant from us, He can hear us, He knows 00:09:46.28\00:09:49.09 what we are going through, but our iniquities, our sins 00:09:49.13\00:09:53.04 have separated us from Him, have hid His face from us. 00:09:53.07\00:09:56.35 So that we do not hear. 00:09:56.38\00:09:59.01 This idea of the veil is brought up other places 00:09:59.04\00:10:02.60 in Scripture, and I'm thinking specifically of 2 Corinthians, 00:10:02.64\00:10:06.24 Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 were the Apostle Paul develops 00:10:06.27\00:10:10.61 this idea and he says that there is a veil that has been erected 00:10:10.64\00:10:15.81 in our minds, and he uses this language, he says, that our 00:10:15.84\00:10:20.58 minds have been blinded to the glory of God by the 00:10:20.61\00:10:22.95 activity of Satan, the enemy of God, who is imposing on 00:10:22.98\00:10:27.35 on our minds, on our perception, lies about the character of God, 00:10:27.38\00:10:31.67 and then at that point, with that veil over our minds were 00:10:31.70\00:10:34.26 we are blinded to the truth about God, Jesus enters. 00:10:34.29\00:10:38.57 In Chapter 4 of 2 Corinthians, verse 6, it says very clearly 00:10:38.60\00:10:43.09 that Jesus is the one Who comes and just as God said let light 00:10:43.12\00:10:47.94 shine out of darkness, in Genesis, He has caused light 00:10:47.97\00:10:51.43 to shine in our hearts, by the glory of Jesus to reveal to us 00:10:51.46\00:10:56.27 the truth about God. 00:10:56.30\00:10:57.70 So the veil of our mind is penetrated and that is somehow 00:10:57.73\00:11:03.30 represented by this veil in the sanctuary service. 00:11:03.33\00:11:06.45 There is a sense James, in which as you read this veiling 00:11:06.48\00:11:09.82 language in Scripture, in which we are separated by God by our 00:11:09.86\00:11:13.19 sins, in a very real external sense, and we are all so 00:11:13.23\00:11:18.36 separated by God, in a mental, perceptual faith sense. 00:11:18.39\00:11:22.75 And so the veil needs to be penetrated literally, there is 00:11:22.79\00:11:25.89 an literal sanctuary, in which God is to be worshipped 00:11:25.93\00:11:28.97 and ultimately we are moving back into immediate fellowship 00:11:29.00\00:11:33.91 with God within the throne room of the Universe, 00:11:33.95\00:11:37.37 the Most holy place, at the same time, 00:11:37.41\00:11:39.76 there is a veil in our minds that need to be 00:11:39.79\00:11:42.90 penetrated, prepatory to us being able to feel 00:11:42.94\00:11:46.01 comfortable returning to God. 00:11:46.05\00:11:47.88 And we see this all through the book of Hebrews, Hebrews has a 00:11:47.91\00:11:50.94 lot of symbolism that points to reality, Melchisedec was a 00:11:50.97\00:11:53.85 literal priest, king, Melchisedec was a person that 00:11:53.88\00:11:57.43 was in the Old Testament and yet here he symbolizes Christ. 00:11:57.46\00:12:01.10 He symbolizes a ministry that Christ has accomplishing for us. 00:12:01.13\00:12:04.95 A ministry that points to a type of priest hood that is 00:12:04.98\00:12:08.08 different than Levitical priesthood. 00:12:08.11\00:12:09.80 And now the reason why Jesus is brought to our attention here as 00:12:09.83\00:12:14.48 our high priest is because Paul says that He is our fore-runner. 00:12:14.51\00:12:20.28 This is an exciting idea James, the word fore-runner 00:12:20.31\00:12:25.10 can be translated scout. 00:12:25.13\00:12:27.48 Now we know what a scout is, a scout is someone who goes ahead 00:12:27.51\00:12:31.16 of a traveling party, to scope out what's in the distance 00:12:31.19\00:12:36.18 ahead and to come back with a report as to whether 00:12:36.21\00:12:38.84 or not there are friendly forces, 00:12:38.87\00:12:40.43 or hostile forces up ahead. 00:12:40.46\00:12:42.31 And so Jesus is our fore-runner, that is He has run before us 00:12:42.34\00:12:47.10 into the presence of God, through the veil, into 00:12:47.13\00:12:51.24 fellowship with God and He is giving a report, He is speaking 00:12:51.27\00:12:54.51 back the good news of gospel to us as human beings and 00:12:54.54\00:12:59.31 saying, listen I know that in your experience 00:12:59.34\00:13:01.96 referring back t Genesis, that you became afraid of God, 00:13:01.99\00:13:05.83 in a very negative sense, you hid from God, 00:13:05.86\00:13:09.23 you are in a condition in which you are separated from God, 00:13:09.26\00:13:12.22 and you perceive Him with a veil on your mind, 00:13:12.25\00:13:14.85 as a hostile force, as someone who is against you, 00:13:14.88\00:13:17.90 but Jesus says God is not hostile, 00:13:17.93\00:13:21.02 He is for us, the Father Himself, in John 16, loves you 00:13:21.05\00:13:25.94 Jesus says, so the scout, the fore-runner who's gone before us 00:13:25.97\00:13:30.59 it's as He has traversed the whole path of human experience, 00:13:30.62\00:13:34.37 as a human being, and He is shouting back and speaking back 00:13:34.40\00:13:37.50 to us and He is saying, come on move forward, come boldly into 00:13:37.53\00:13:42.86 the presence of God, before the throne of grace, 00:13:42.89\00:13:45.21 He'll give you mercy and He'll give you grace to help. 00:13:45.24\00:13:49.13 You don't need to be shy about this, come boldly before God. 00:13:49.16\00:13:52.31 Amen, and we see that in this context, verses 19 and 20. 00:13:52.34\00:13:55.83 Pointing to the fore-runner, pointing to the sanctuary in 00:13:55.86\00:13:58.57 heaven, calling us to come within the veil, 00:13:58.61\00:14:00.38 and by the way that word veil, can stand for the veil, the 00:14:00.41\00:14:03.33 curtain that was before the holy place, the Most holy place, 00:14:03.37\00:14:06.25 The point that Paul is making here is we want to go from 00:14:06.29\00:14:08.99 the earthly to the heavenly, we want to go from the types 00:14:09.02\00:14:11.68 to the anti-type, the fulfillment to the reality I 00:14:11.72\00:14:14.41 should say, we want to enter into the veil, and we 00:14:14.45\00:14:17.07 want to see Christ in there as an Melchisedec priest hood 00:14:17.11\00:14:20.52 a Royal priest for us before the Father, He scouted it out and 00:14:20.56\00:14:24.63 he's telling us that it is a friendly place, a place where 00:14:24.67\00:14:28.31 we can find acceptance, we can find mercy, grace and power. 00:14:28.35\00:14:31.78 Were we can find the joy and happiness God wants us to have. 00:14:31.82\00:14:34.99 We are going to explore Hebrews Chapter 7 further in just a 00:14:35.02\00:14:37.62 moment James, but we are going to take a break and encourage 00:14:37.65\00:14:40.42 our viewers to stay with us, as
