Hi friends, and welcome to our program, Books of the Book. 00:00:20.87\00:00:24.24 I'm your co-host James Rafferty, I'm here with Ty Gibson. 00:00:24.27\00:00:27.61 We're looking at the book of Hebrews and we are in Chapter 4, 00:00:27.64\00:00:31.07 the latter part of chapter 4, right now James. 00:00:31.10\00:00:33.24 It's been an exciting study so far. 00:00:33.27\00:00:35.20 We want to look at verses 14-16 to close out chapter 4 00:00:35.23\00:00:40.88 because that is actually a more natural break, as we've noticed 00:00:40.91\00:00:45.00 here as we've looked at the Book of Hebrews, because now the 00:00:45.03\00:00:49.17 Apostle Paul having laid the foundation, chapter one, 00:00:49.20\00:00:51.97 Jesus is God, none other than 00:00:52.00\00:00:54.59 the Divine Creator of heaven and earth. 00:00:54.63\00:00:56.71 Chapter 2, Jesus is human, he's taken upon himself 00:00:56.74\00:01:01.19 our very humanity. 00:01:01.22\00:01:02.78 Then in chapter 3 we've looked at how the Apostle Paul 00:01:02.81\00:01:06.49 builds this bridge into the subject of the humanity of 00:01:06.52\00:01:11.17 Christ and begins to introduce the idea 00:01:11.20\00:01:14.43 of priesthood a little bit. 00:01:14.46\00:01:15.83 Chapter 4, he gets into the Sabbath as a symbol 00:01:15.86\00:01:20.06 of salvation and rest. 00:01:20.10\00:01:21.15 And then at the latter part of chapter 4 00:01:21.19\00:01:24.80 seeing then, seeing therefore that we have a great high priest 00:01:24.83\00:01:31.60 who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God. 00:01:31.63\00:01:35.09 Let us hold fast our confession for we do not have 00:01:35.12\00:01:40.25 a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses 00:01:40.28\00:01:43.43 but was in all points tempted like as we are 00:01:43.46\00:01:47.27 yet without sin. 00:01:47.30\00:01:49.87 Well wait a minute, tempted like as we are I mean 00:01:49.90\00:01:51.63 some of us are tempted to do drugs, some of us are tempted 00:01:51.66\00:01:54.45 sexually, Jesus was celibate, Jesus never did drugs, 00:01:54.48\00:01:57.47 Jesus never partook of some of the sins we partake of, 00:01:57.51\00:02:00.89 How can He be tempted, like we are, if He was holy, 00:02:00.93\00:02:05.09 harmless pure, if He rejected all forms of sin? 00:02:05.13\00:02:09.26 I think that it is important to realize that the language 00:02:09.29\00:02:11.58 Paul uses here James, is tempted in all points like 00:02:11.61\00:02:16.04 as we are, Jesus wasn't tempted in every particular 00:02:16.07\00:02:20.01 in every sin that any human being has ever been 00:02:20.05\00:02:23.92 tempted to commit, but the fact is, that in principle 00:02:23.95\00:02:28.84 at the level of the human will, Jesus was tempted in the 00:02:28.88\00:02:33.74 same way and in all points like as we are. 00:02:33.77\00:02:37.24 Okay, So we are talking now about the essence 00:02:37.28\00:02:40.68 of our temptation, and that is when temptation comes to us, 00:02:40.72\00:02:44.54 it comes to the place where we make a decision, it comes 00:02:44.57\00:02:47.08 to the will, and in that sense we are left with a choice, 00:02:47.11\00:02:51.87 are we going to do our will or are we going to do God's will? 00:02:51.90\00:02:54.63 And Jesus also experienced that level of temptation. 00:02:54.66\00:02:58.41 Well I think it reached a climax where He Himself, 00:02:58.44\00:03:00.72 in the garden of Gethsemane expressed the real 00:03:00.76\00:03:04.29 essence of His temptation process. 00:03:04.33\00:03:06.79 He said, praying to the Father, He said, Dear Father let this 00:03:06.83\00:03:11.92 cup pass from Me, nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will. 00:03:11.96\00:03:17.02 Not My will but Your will be done Father, so Jesus in His 00:03:17.05\00:03:25.38 humanity, having taken our humanity upon Himself, 00:03:25.41\00:03:26.95 experienced the crossroads between knowing God's will 00:03:26.98\00:03:31.64 and yet feeling the inclination to move in a different direction 00:03:31.67\00:03:37.09 and Jesus in every experience, and every particular of 00:03:37.13\00:03:40.96 temptation, according to Paul here, He did not sin, He 00:03:41.00\00:03:44.76 never yielded to that temptation but He experienced it on a 00:03:44.80\00:03:49.05 fierce and very real level. 00:03:49.08\00:03:51.00 So the essence, then of all temptation, is when the human 00:03:51.03\00:03:54.87 will crosses with the will of God. 00:03:54.90\00:03:56.31 With what we want to do, crosses with what God 00:03:56.34\00:03:59.45 wants us to do, with relying on ourselves verses 00:03:59.49\00:04:02.59 relying on God. 00:04:02.63\00:04:04.02 Is that why when you see Christ in the wilderness 00:04:04.05\00:04:06.57 of temptation, when the Devil comes to Him he tempts 00:04:06.60\00:04:09.11 Him to turn stones into bread? 00:04:09.15\00:04:11.25 Which I have never been tempted to do 00:04:11.28\00:04:13.26 and I don't think you have, no matter how hungry we would 00:04:13.29\00:04:16.73 ever become, we would never be tempted to turn stones 00:04:16.77\00:04:20.17 into bread because it is out of our realm, 00:04:20.20\00:04:21.93 it's out of our league, we're just... 00:04:21.96\00:04:23.65 Yes but not only that, what is so bad about 00:04:23.68\00:04:26.74 turning stones into bread? 00:04:26.78\00:04:28.50 I mean I can think of a lot of things I would be tempted 00:04:28.53\00:04:30.95 to do, but what is so evil, what is so wicked 00:04:30.98\00:04:33.31 about turning stones into bread, especially if you are hungry? 00:04:33.34\00:04:35.25 Well Jesus in the wilderness of temptation, again, was 00:04:35.28\00:04:39.62 experiencing the devil pitting his will against God's will. 00:04:39.65\00:04:44.42 Jesus had to make a choice in those situations. 00:04:44.46\00:04:47.96 And really, if we are understanding the divinity of 00:04:47.99\00:04:52.04 Christ correctly, what we're saying here is that Jesus in the 00:04:52.07\00:04:55.80 wilderness could have turned stones into bread, 00:04:55.83\00:04:58.06 He could have relied upon Himself, He could have in His 00:04:58.09\00:05:02.01 own nature manifested that power, but because 00:05:02.05\00:05:05.66 He was a man and He divested His divinity, used any of that 00:05:05.70\00:05:09.71 divinity, because He acted as we are to act, 00:05:09.75\00:05:12.35 relied upon the Father, He did not reached into Himself 00:05:12.39\00:05:15.10 He did not rely upon Himself, He was tempted to self-reliance 00:05:15.14\00:05:19.11 and He turned to God. 00:05:19.14\00:05:20.46 We are tempted to self-reliance, and we are to turn to God 00:05:20.49\00:05:23.59 and that is where He can help us, He can aide us, He can 00:05:23.62\00:05:27.04 sympathize with us in our temptations. 00:05:27.07\00:05:29.38 I really think it is important to emphasize here 00:05:29.41\00:05:32.47 that the priesthood of Jesus, in the context of Hebrews, 00:05:32.50\00:05:36.49 is a priesthood that is under girded by this idea of sympathy. 00:05:36.52\00:05:42.37 Jesus is a sympatric high priest why, because He has entered 00:05:42.40\00:05:46.68 into our experiences. 00:05:46.71\00:05:48.06 He has moved through the human experience in a very 00:05:48.09\00:05:52.16 real way, He knows exactly what it is like to be a human 00:05:52.19\00:05:56.30 being, to struggle through this territory, of humanity, 00:05:56.33\00:05:59.64 and to come through it victorious in the end. 00:05:59.67\00:06:02.55 So He sympathizes. 00:06:02.58\00:06:04.80 I love that, because when you look at our temptations, 00:06:04.83\00:06:06.73 when you look at the struggles we go through, 00:06:06.76\00:06:08.48 and you look at Christ in the wilderness, He covers every 00:06:08.51\00:06:11.66 point there, the Devil comes to Him and tempts Him. 00:06:11.70\00:06:14.20 not once, not twice, but three times. 00:06:14.23\00:06:15.97 When you look in 1 John, and this is just a few pages over, 00:06:16.00\00:06:19.08 1 John chapter 2, and it begins here in verse 15, it talks 00:06:19.11\00:06:24.71 about these three areas of temptation. 00:06:24.75\00:06:26.73 It says in 1 John chapter 2, "Love not the world, neither 00:06:26.76\00:06:29.71 the things that are in the world if any man love the world 00:06:29.74\00:06:32.43 the love of the Father is not in Him, for all that is in the 00:06:32.47\00:06:35.12 world the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, 00:06:35.15\00:06:38.29 and the pride of life is not of the Father but is of world. " 00:06:38.32\00:06:42.00 Now here is an interesting point, all that is in the world 00:06:42.03\00:06:45.68 John here is talking about all that is in the world, 00:06:45.71\00:06:48.94 everything that is in the world and then he sums it up with 00:06:48.98\00:06:51.27 in these three areas, the lust of the flesh, 00:06:51.31\00:06:52.82 the lust of the eyes, the pride of life. 00:06:52.85\00:06:55.20 All that is in the world all the temptations in the world, 00:06:55.23\00:06:57.60 the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, 00:06:57.64\00:06:58.81 and the pride of life. 00:06:58.85\00:06:59.82 That is all encompassed in that. 00:06:59.83\00:07:01.07 When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He was tempted 00:07:01.10\00:07:04.59 on the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, 00:07:04.63\00:07:07.63 the pride of life. 00:07:07.66\00:07:08.97 The lust of the flesh, turn these stones into bread. 00:07:09.00\00:07:11.15 Forty days of fasting, He's hungry, His human body 00:07:11.18\00:07:15.25 wants to eat as bad if not far, in far more desperation 00:07:15.29\00:07:18.83 than maybe a drug addict wants to get a fix, 00:07:18.86\00:07:21.01 an alcoholic wants to get a drink, 00:07:21.04\00:07:22.39 in far more than a sex addict wants to be satisfied, 00:07:22.42\00:07:26.90 He wants that food, that nourishment, and so He 00:07:26.93\00:07:30.14 is tempted in that area, the lust of the flesh, 00:07:30.18\00:07:33.32 the lust of the eyes, the whole world is set before Him. 00:07:33.36\00:07:37.17 He is tempted to give up all to receive that worldly praise 00:07:37.21\00:07:41.27 worldly honor, worldly riches, and then the pride of life. 00:07:41.31\00:07:45.34 Throw yourself off the temple, it's okay God will send 00:07:45.37\00:07:47.74 send His angels, He'll protect you, etc. etc. 00:07:47.77\00:07:49.32 All these three areas are brought to Christ. 00:07:49.35\00:07:51.51 Yeah, we are so thankful that Jesus, in being tempted 00:07:51.54\00:07:56.51 as we are, was victorious on every point and 00:07:56.54\00:07:59.86 that is where Paul begins to reason through in Chapter 5 00:07:59.89\00:08:03.02 and he explains that while Jesus went through this very real 00:08:03.05\00:08:07.10 human experience, went through temptation, Jesus perfected 00:08:07.13\00:08:12.30 humanity through that process, having never yielded to 00:08:12.33\00:08:16.79 temptation, He perfected humanity, Paul brings out, 00:08:16.82\00:08:20.12 down in verses 7 and onward. 00:08:20.15\00:08:22.36 "Who in the days of his flesh when he had offered up prayers, 00:08:22.40\00:08:27.10 and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to him who was 00:08:27.14\00:08:31.03 able to save him from death, and was heard because of his 00:08:31.07\00:08:34.93 Godly fear, though he was a son, yet he learned obedience 00:08:34.96\00:08:38.98 by the things which he suffered, and having" verse 9 00:08:39.01\00:08:43.25 "been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation 00:08:43.28\00:08:48.34 to all who obey him. " 00:08:48.38\00:08:50.66 So humanity in Christ was perfected and that was the 00:08:50.69\00:08:55.42 authorship of a whole new humanity. 00:08:55.46\00:08:57.50 A whole new way to be human, if you will, which was the 00:08:57.53\00:09:00.57 original way that God intended, for us to experience our 00:09:00.61\00:09:03.53 humanity, victorious over sin, rising above, living in 00:09:03.56\00:09:08.51 communion with God, living in fellowship with God in which 00:09:08.54\00:09:13.57 like Jesus we love righteousness we hate sin, we learn to love 00:09:13.60\00:09:18.60 the things God loves, to hate the things that God hates 00:09:18.63\00:09:21.37 and we lose the taste for iniquity. 00:09:21.41\00:09:23.38 I love this because you know the whole context here 00:09:23.42\00:09:25.87 is taking us to a different direction. 00:09:25.90\00:09:28.65 We've looked at the rest, we've looked at salvation, 00:09:28.69\00:09:30.64 but again, we are now looking at the theme 00:09:30.67\00:09:32.98 of how this plays out in our lives, 00:09:33.02\00:09:35.79 how this plays out in relationship of overcoming sin. 00:09:35.82\00:09:38.54 Not just saying thank you for the gift Jesus Christ 00:09:38.57\00:09:40.96 I'll continue to live my life as I want. 00:09:41.00\00:09:42.66 but saying thank you for salvation, 00:09:42.69\00:09:44.87 how does this change me? 00:09:44.90\00:09:47.19 And I love it because verses 1 and 2 of Hebrews 5 00:09:47.22\00:09:50.02 "For every high priest. " This is the earthly priesthood, 00:09:50.05\00:09:53.17 "taken from among men, is ordained for men 00:09:53.20\00:09:55.68 for things pertaining to God that he may offer both 00:09:55.71\00:09:57.66 gifts and sacrifices for sins, Who can have compassion on 00:09:57.69\00:10:01.75 on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; 00:10:01.78\00:10:03.60 for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity. " 00:10:03.63\00:10:06.26 In other words, Paul is going back to the earthly priesthood. 00:10:06.29\00:10:08.11 You know, I remember I was doing a camp meeting recently, 00:10:08.14\00:10:10.85 and a lady came to me and she we were talking about raising 00:10:10.88\00:10:14.12 children, I was telling her, I was explaining to her how 00:10:14.16\00:10:17.40 when my kid, when I make mistakes with my kids, when I 00:10:17.43\00:10:20.70 get impatient with my kids, when I do something wrong 00:10:20.73\00:10:23.67 that I know is not right with my kids, how I, it is difficult 00:10:23.70\00:10:27.11 for me as a parent, and a preacher, it is difficult for me 00:10:27.14\00:10:30.18 but I want to humble myself and I want to ask my children 00:10:30.22\00:10:32.76 to forgive me, please forgive me, daddy shouldn't have done 00:10:32.79\00:10:35.05 that daddy shouldn't have said that, and she looked at me. 00:10:35.09\00:10:37.31 She said, "but your a Godly man, you're a preacher. " 00:10:37.34\00:10:42.06 And the implication was two, two fold, first of all how could 00:10:42.10\00:10:46.86 you be impatient with your kids, and secondly, how could you 00:10:46.89\00:10:50.65 ask forgiveness of your kids? 00:10:50.68\00:10:53.56 Because you are suppose to be a Godly man, you don't need 00:10:53.59\00:10:56.49 to low... and I thought that's why I ask forgiveness. 00:10:56.52\00:10:59.26 If I am going to be Godly I am going to humble myself and 00:10:59.29\00:11:01.58 secondly, here it is right here, the priest, the leader of the 00:11:01.62\00:11:06.35 Old Testament Israel, the leader the guy that was up front 00:11:06.38\00:11:10.12 that was offering the sacrifices, was one who could 00:11:10.15\00:11:13.48 have compassion with them, in other words, preachers aren't 00:11:13.52\00:11:16.81 above congregations, pastors aren't above, they have 00:11:16.84\00:11:19.11 compassion, they are surrounded with the same weaknesses, 00:11:19.14\00:11:22.99 they understand and therefore Jesus came to have compassion 00:11:23.02\00:11:27.43 on us, He was surrounded with those same weaknesses. 00:11:27.46\00:11:28.84 Amen! This is so important for us to realize in Hebrew 00:11:28.87\00:11:31.38 here he is bringing out this idea again of Jesus being a 00:11:31.41\00:11:35.87 compassionate high priest. 00:11:35.90\00:11:37.31 One who is touched with the feelings of our infirmities 00:11:37.34\00:11:40.44 you know James, we often think of God in such lofty terms, 00:11:40.47\00:11:44.09 that we fail to recognize that yes God is high and holy, but 00:11:44.12\00:11:49.74 at the same time, we often fail to realize that God is 00:11:49.77\00:11:54.82 also touched with the feelings of our infirmities. 00:11:54.85\00:11:58.88 Jesus brings that out in the open by taking our human nature 00:11:58.91\00:12:02.54 coming into the world, He very clearly demonstrates 00:12:02.58\00:12:05.62 the heart of God. 00:12:05.65\00:12:06.77 All the way back in the Old Testament we see the passion 00:12:06.80\00:12:10.17 of God coming through. 00:12:10.20\00:12:11.64 We see the feelings of God coming through. 00:12:11.67\00:12:14.13 I love, for example, where in Chapter 63 of Isaiah, 00:12:14.17\00:12:17.82 verse 9, God told the Israelites in all your afflictions I'm 00:12:17.85\00:12:22.68 afflicted, you don't experience anything that doesn't touch 00:12:22.72\00:12:27.57 Me because I am a God who is infinitely invested in you 00:12:27.60\00:12:32.42 I made you, I love you, you're mine, 00:12:32.45\00:12:35.40 and I feel whatever you feel. 00:12:35.43\00:12:38.76 I also love, this is one of my favorite Scriptures on the 00:12:38.79\00:12:44.31 compassionate, the emotional side of God, in Chapter 56 00:12:44.34\00:12:49.82 of Psalms in a poetic language, David is voicing the 00:12:49.85\00:12:54.32 sentiments of God and God says through David, 00:12:54.36\00:12:57.11 I have collected all your tears in a bottle, now that doesn't 00:12:57.15\00:13:01.63 mean they are alphabetized bottles on shelves in heaven 00:13:01.67\00:13:04.96 and you follow them to the G's Gibson and then you follow 00:13:04.99\00:13:08.25 to the T's then you find Ty, and then you see a certain 00:13:08.28\00:13:10.97 amount of saline, liquid tears that have been collected. 00:13:11.00\00:13:14.77 It's poetry that is intended to make a point and if you 00:13:14.80\00:13:18.95 were to unravel the poetry, basically, when Scripture 00:13:18.98\00:13:20.97 says that God has collected our tears in a bottle, God is 00:13:21.00\00:13:24.84 saying to us, you never experience anything that I don't 00:13:24.87\00:13:28.66 take notice of, that I don't Myself experience. 00:13:28.69\00:13:31.47 The resonance with, I know what you are going through, 00:13:31.51\00:13:35.88 I feel your feelings, I hurt when you hurt, My 00:13:35.91\00:13:39.22 experience is dove-tailing with yours by virtue of 00:13:39.25\00:13:42.55 My love for you. 00:13:42.59\00:13:43.73 Powerful, He's compassionate He's sympatric, He understands 00:13:43.76\00:13:46.86 He is surrounded with our weaknesses, we have a God 00:13:46.89\00:13:49.71 Who can relate to us, we have a God Who is tempted like 00:13:49.75\00:13:52.59 we are, we have a God Who is our advocate in heaven and 00:13:52.63\00:13:55.44 He knows how to deliver us and we are 00:13:55.47\00:13:57.48 going to continue to understand 00:13:57.51\00:13:58.65 more about this God in the person of Jesus Christ as we 00:13:58.68\00:14:00.47 continue our study so don't go away we'll be right back. 00:14:00.50\00:14:02.25
