The Bible is composed of 66 books, written by more 00:00:20.98\00:00:25.36 than forty different authors. 00:00:25.39\00:00:27.66 And yet with all this diverse material and diverse 00:00:27.69\00:00:31.49 personalities, we discern in Scripture, running themes 00:00:31.52\00:00:36.01 cohesive ideas that indicate the workings of a mind behind 00:00:36.04\00:00:41.45 the scenes, the mind of the Holy Spirit inspiring 00:00:41.48\00:00:44.66 these various authors. 00:00:44.69\00:00:45.94 Welcome to Books of the Book, I am Ty Gibson and with me is 00:00:45.97\00:00:49.65 my co-host, James Rafferty 00:00:49.68\00:00:51.65 And the book we are looking at right now in the Bible, James 00:00:51.68\00:00:54.98 is the book of Hebrews and we are on chapter 4, 00:00:55.01\00:00:57.11 Hebrews chapter 4, well we are talking about rest. 00:00:57.14\00:01:01.70 You remember that stuff we needed when 00:01:01.73\00:01:04.09 first got here to 3ABN? 00:01:04.13\00:01:05.71 It was interesting, was it? 00:01:05.74\00:01:07.22 We were tired, we had traveled a long way, all the way 00:01:07.25\00:01:09.59 from Oregon, through Denver, through St. Louis, and then 00:01:09.63\00:01:13.46 driven down here to 3ABN, and we went into this little 00:01:13.50\00:01:17.30 apartment were we are staying and we fell asleep 00:01:17.34\00:01:19.74 a little bit late, set our alarm, 00:01:19.77\00:01:21.60 woke up in the morning, drug ourselves out 00:01:21.64\00:01:24.29 of bed because of time change, two hours, 00:01:24.33\00:01:26.91 we're just beat, we just want a little bit more rest, 00:01:26.95\00:01:29.39 better not, we can't keep them waiting in the studio, 00:01:29.42\00:01:32.05 Got out here and we were one hour early. 00:01:32.08\00:01:36.56 Why? Well because the clocks, in that little apartment we were 00:01:36.60\00:01:40.00 staying in, hadn't been changed so we had adjusted 00:01:40.03\00:01:43.36 to the wrong time. 00:01:43.39\00:01:44.37 Nobody was here, we barely got into the building, 00:01:44.40\00:01:46.27 and we just thought, Oh! we could have used 00:01:46.30\00:01:48.44 that extra hour of rest, REST! 00:01:48.48\00:01:49.99 To have... - Rest! -Yeah! 00:01:50.02\00:01:51.84 What Paul is picking up here in Hebrews chapter 4, rest. 00:01:51.87\00:01:54.48 Spiritual rest, James, is far more significant, 00:01:54.51\00:01:58.28 than physical rest, there is a salvation in rest. 00:01:58.31\00:02:03.37 That is brought to our attention here in Hebrews chapter 4, 00:02:03.40\00:02:06.31 and just like Paul has done before, in chapter 3 and 00:02:06.34\00:02:09.59 chapter 2, he begins chapter 4 by introducing a new topic, 00:02:09.62\00:02:14.92 a related topic, but new, with the word "therefore". 00:02:14.95\00:02:19.18 He is referring back to what has been covered thus far, 00:02:19.22\00:02:23.44 specifically in chapter 3 00:02:23.47\00:02:25.14 He says, therefore since a promise remains of entering 00:02:25.17\00:02:30.33 His rest, capital H, this is Jesus, let us fear lest 00:02:30.37\00:02:35.53 any of you seem to come short of it. 00:02:35.56\00:02:38.29 So we are invited, we are indeed admonished 00:02:38.32\00:02:41.49 to enter into this rest that Jesus holds out before us. 00:02:41.52\00:02:45.68 Based upon His promise, I like this because this 00:02:45.71\00:02:48.10 is contrasting the promise of God, that we have just learned 00:02:48.13\00:02:51.81 in chapter 3, is sure and steadfast, even in our rebellion 00:02:51.85\00:02:55.53 His word stands fast. 00:02:55.56\00:02:57.10 He will allow us to experience the consequences of sin. 00:02:57.13\00:03:01.69 Many times in our lives so that we can understand 00:03:01.72\00:03:03.97 what those consequences are, and so we can understand 00:03:04.00\00:03:06.18 that He is faithful, He can be trusted and His word 00:03:06.21\00:03:09.52 is faithful to accomplish. 00:03:09.55\00:03:11.70 When He makes a promise it will accomplish, 00:03:11.73\00:03:13.75 it will, He will follow through with that. 00:03:13.78\00:03:15.36 So the promise here is contrasted with the fear the 00:03:15.39\00:03:18.77 phobia of losing out, missing out, now we have phobias 00:03:18.81\00:03:22.18 about a lot of things. 00:03:22.21\00:03:23.18 You know some people have phobias about height, 00:03:23.19\00:03:24.53 I'm kind of scared of the myself. 00:03:24.57\00:03:26.53 Spiders, small confined places, claustrophobic. 00:03:26.57\00:03:30.22 This is a phobia that is natural to the human heart. 00:03:30.25\00:03:33.47 One, that Paul is saying, is contrasted with the 00:03:33.50\00:03:36.97 promise of God's word. 00:03:37.00\00:03:38.40 This fear and this phobia that we of missing out, of losing out 00:03:38.43\00:03:43.55 on something, a lot of people are undermined in their faith 00:03:43.58\00:03:47.26 in and their confidence in God, because there is a phobia 00:03:47.29\00:03:50.69 built up about trusting in His word, thinking or making it 00:03:50.72\00:03:54.85 making believe that His word is fairy tales, it can't be real 00:03:54.89\00:03:59.02 the Bible isn't trustworthy. 00:03:59.05\00:04:00.50 So God has to work through this and establish faith, 00:04:00.53\00:04:03.70 First of all in His word, who He is, so this phobia can be 00:04:03.73\00:04:07.00 destroyed and you can trust His promise. 00:04:07.03\00:04:08.67 It seems like in Paul's context, that faith is 00:04:08.70\00:04:12.72 the antonym for fear. 00:04:12.75\00:04:14.69 Faith is what we are invited into, in order to displace 00:04:14.72\00:04:19.16 fear from our hearts. 00:04:19.19\00:04:20.83 To build up within us a confidence that Jesus will 00:04:20.87\00:04:25.17 complete that He has begun in us, and to build up a confidence 00:04:25.20\00:04:28.98 in us that He is the one that initiated, and in Himself 00:04:29.01\00:04:32.59 achieved the work of salvation apart from 00:04:32.62\00:04:35.55 our contribution, or participation. 00:04:35.59\00:04:38.40 Referring back to chapter 1, and verse 3, which was a guiding 00:04:38.43\00:04:43.02 point that we really need to keep in mind. 00:04:43.05\00:04:45.16 And that is that Jesus as the Creator, as the God of Heaven, 00:04:45.19\00:04:49.74 come down to earth, in our human nature, accomplished 00:04:49.77\00:04:52.68 our salvation, purged our sins, by Himself. 00:04:52.72\00:04:57.14 That is the basis of the rest that we are invited into 00:04:57.17\00:05:01.74 in Hebrews chapter 4. 00:05:01.77\00:05:03.33 We are to rest in a salvation that He has achieved. 00:05:03.36\00:05:09.24 Now it is clearly brought out verse 2, when you look at 00:05:09.27\00:05:11.40 verse 2, it says, "For unto us was the gospel preached, 00:05:11.43\00:05:14.80 as well as unto them, but the word preached did not profit 00:05:14.83\00:05:19.36 them with faith in them that heard it. " 00:05:19.39\00:05:21.99 Now this is one of my favorite texts in the New Testament. 00:05:22.02\00:05:24.66 Why? Because it indicates, that in the Old Testament 00:05:24.69\00:05:28.15 the gospel was preached, in the Old testament people 00:05:28.18\00:05:30.49 were saved by the gospel of Jesus Christ and the 00:05:30.52\00:05:32.48 Old Testament salvation was through faith and not by works. 00:05:32.51\00:05:36.29 Lot of people today, are under the wrong impression 00:05:36.32\00:05:39.26 that the Old Testament and the Old covenant people were saved 00:05:39.29\00:05:41.73 through obedience to the law. 00:05:41.76\00:05:43.04 NO! Never, never has been, never will be. 00:05:43.07\00:05:45.98 It has always been salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. 00:05:46.01\00:05:50.27 Always been the good news of the gospel. 00:05:50.30\00:05:51.99 And this is another place where we see Paul as the author of 00:05:52.02\00:05:55.85 Hebrews, because Paul warns us, not only here, but also in 00:05:55.88\00:05:58.72 Galatians who were being bewitched by 00:05:58.75\00:05:59.99 this legalistic experience. 00:06:00.02\00:06:01.87 He warns us that we need to trust in the gospel. 00:06:01.90\00:06:05.27 We need to be grounded in the gospel, and the gospel is 00:06:05.30\00:06:08.37 preached in the Old Testament 00:06:08.40\00:06:09.37 Here it is preached to Israel, there it was preached to Abraham 00:06:09.38\00:06:12.51 The gospel was, has always been the foundation, the bases 00:06:12.54\00:06:16.91 of salvation, it parallels Ephesians 2 that we 00:06:16.94\00:06:19.11 talked about earlier, "for by grace you are saved through 00:06:19.14\00:06:21.34 faith and not and not of yourselves it is the gift 00:06:21.38\00:06:22.71 of God, not of works less any man should boast. " 00:06:22.74\00:06:25.40 Well a lot of people, James, are going to have difficulty 00:06:25.43\00:06:29.69 ah, pinpointing where the gospel was preached 00:06:29.72\00:06:32.93 in the Old Testament because the dispensationalist idea 00:06:32.96\00:06:36.23 that strictly divides the Old and New Testament and says 00:06:36.26\00:06:40.93 that salvation was by obedience to the law, in Old Testament 00:06:40.96\00:06:43.79 times, but by grace in the New Testament times, that 00:06:43.82\00:06:45.78 idea is so common, and people are so entrenched in that way 00:06:45.81\00:06:51.56 of thinking, that often times people draw a blank. 00:06:51.59\00:06:54.35 What do you mean the gospel was preached 00:06:54.38\00:06:55.94 in the Old Testament? 00:06:55.97\00:06:57.06 But I know of at least two examples that are prominent 00:06:57.09\00:06:59.67 examples of what Paul is talking about here, 00:06:59.70\00:07:02.51 that the gospel was preached in the Old Testament, 00:07:02.54\00:07:03.78 number one, in the context of Hebrews, which referring back 00:07:03.81\00:07:07.87 to the entire, typical sanctuary service, that entire service 00:07:07.90\00:07:12.85 revolved around the sacrifice of the Lamb on the alter 00:07:12.88\00:07:17.63 and the carrying of the blood into the Holy Place, into the 00:07:17.66\00:07:20.83 Most holy place in the day of atonement, very clearly 00:07:20.86\00:07:23.57 that entire symbolic service, it was a type, it was an object. 00:07:23.60\00:07:28.00 lesson of the sacrificial death of Jesus, the love of God 00:07:28.03\00:07:32.48 manifested in Him, and the fact that the blood of Jesus Christ 00:07:32.51\00:07:36.25 all the way through the process of salvation, is the power 00:07:36.28\00:07:40.61 by which we are saved. 00:07:40.64\00:07:41.80 So clearly, in that sanctuary service, we have the gospel 00:07:41.83\00:07:45.68 being preached in type and symbol, but I also, James, 00:07:45.71\00:07:48.57 and this really came as a surprise to me as I was studying 00:07:48.60\00:07:51.74 the Scriptures, and it dawned on me that even the Ten Commandment 00:07:51.77\00:07:56.14 law of God is a place in the Old Testament where the 00:07:56.17\00:08:01.37 gospel is preached. 00:08:01.40\00:08:02.58 The gospel is actually infolded in the Ten Commandment law. 00:08:02.61\00:08:08.50 It is in fact, you know what is really interesting? there are 00:08:08.53\00:08:12.03 two places in Exodus chapter 20, where we look at some parallels 00:08:12.06\00:08:15.80 right here with Hebrews chapter 4, 00:08:15.83\00:08:17.58 the first one is in Ex. 20:1,2, where God says, I am the Lord 00:08:17.61\00:08:24.37 thy God that delivered you out of the bondage of Egyptian, 00:08:24.40\00:08:27.89 out of the Egyptian bondage, I delivered you. 00:08:27.92\00:08:30.79 And when you look at you realize that comes before any 00:08:30.82\00:08:33.75 thou shalt or thou shalt not. 00:08:33.78\00:08:35.06 That's right! That's right! 00:08:35.09\00:08:36.39 I delivered you out of Egyptian bondage therefore have no 00:08:36.42\00:08:38.80 other Gods before me. 00:08:38.83\00:08:39.86 How did God deliver them out of Egyptian bondage? 00:08:39.89\00:08:42.14 It is so clear if you look at the history, 00:08:42.17\00:08:44.69 if you go to Exodus 20, where this statement 00:08:44.72\00:08:47.21 is made of the, in the Ten Commandments 00:08:47.25\00:08:48.91 You go back to chapter 16, and we can see clearly 00:08:48.94\00:08:53.38 that the point of deliverance, for the children of Israel, 00:08:53.41\00:08:58.12 from slavery in Egypt, was the blood of the Passover Lamb. 00:08:58.15\00:09:01.84 On the door post..., that's right, that blood of the lamb 00:09:01.87\00:09:09.01 was symbolic, it pointed forward to the Lamb of God 00:09:09.04\00:09:12.92 Jesus Christ, Who would take away the sins of the world. 00:09:12.95\00:09:15.26 So literally, the gospel, or the cross of Jesus Christ, 00:09:15.29\00:09:16.26 is explicit in the Ten Commandments. 00:09:16.29\00:09:23.25 Basically what the Ten Commandments say 00:09:23.28\00:09:25.33 if you read the whole law, beginning at Exodus 20 verse 1, 00:09:25.36\00:09:30.25 God doesn't just say, thou shalt, thou shalt not, God says 00:09:30.28\00:09:33.24 I delivered you, by the blood of the Passover Lamb 00:09:33.27\00:09:36.33 there fore in the power of that grace, of that deliverance 00:09:36.37\00:09:42.94 my accomplishment, therefore have no other Gods before me. 00:09:42.97\00:09:47.98 and the Ten Commandments unfold, so in that sense, 00:09:48.01\00:09:51.30 we can look at the Ten Commandments and say wow, 00:09:51.33\00:09:53.85 these commandments are promises. 00:09:53.88\00:09:56.05 This is God, not simply telling us we ought to do, 00:09:56.08\00:09:59.99 this is God saying, if you will partake of the delivery 00:10:00.02\00:10:04.54 grace that is provided for you in Jesus, I promise you 00:10:04.58\00:10:09.09 you will have no other Gods before me, I promise you 00:10:09.12\00:10:11.64 won't commit adultery, I promise you won't kill, lie, steal 00:10:11.67\00:10:15.38 because My grace will empower you and will deliver you 00:10:15.41\00:10:20.13 in such a way that you won't be in bondage 00:10:20.16\00:10:22.23 to these things anymore. 00:10:22.27\00:10:23.49 So there is that same principle again, defined right here in 00:10:23.52\00:10:26.98 Hebrews chapter 4 in relationship Exodus, 00:10:27.01\00:10:29.19 in relationship to the Old Testament 00:10:29.22\00:10:30.67 in relation to the gospel. 00:10:30.71\00:10:31.68 Another principle you find is the same one in Hebrews 2 00:10:31.69\00:10:34.66 Fear, the fear factor is part of our experience. 00:10:34.69\00:10:37.67 In Exodus chapter 20, as he closes, as Moses closes this 00:10:37.70\00:10:41.46 admonition, he talks to the people and he says to them, 00:10:41.49\00:10:44.62 verse 20, "Fear not for God has come to prove you, that His 00:10:44.65\00:10:49.57 fear may be before your faces that you may sin not. " 00:10:49.60\00:10:52.72 Now this is really important because while God wants to 00:10:52.75\00:10:55.95 remove fear from our hearts, He also wants to put fear 00:10:55.98\00:10:59.15 into our hearts. 00:10:59.18\00:11:00.45 And that's what is being talked about in Hebrews 4. 00:11:00.48\00:11:02.21 There is a fear that God wants to remove, Hebrews 00:11:02.24\00:11:04.91 chapter 2, and there is a fear God wants us to have. 00:11:04.94\00:11:06.77 The fear He wants us to remove is the fear of having a 00:11:06.80\00:11:10.43 relationship with Him, the fear of missing out on salvation. 00:11:10.46\00:11:13.58 The fear He wants us to have is the fear of reverence for Him. 00:11:13.62\00:11:16.73 An awe of Him, honoring Him, following Him in responding 00:11:16.76\00:11:21.29 to Him, of being in communication with Him, 00:11:21.32\00:11:24.64 as He wants to be with us. 00:11:24.67\00:11:26.46 I think it's fascinating the Exodus 20:20 verse 00:11:26.49\00:11:28.84 uses the word "fear" twice in one sentence, and one time the 00:11:28.87\00:11:34.72 word fear is used in a negative sense, and the other time it is 00:11:34.75\00:11:36.95 used in a positive sense. 00:11:36.99\00:11:38.18 It's almost contradictive if you don't understand the word 00:11:38.21\00:11:41.73 is used two different ways in Scripture, because Moses 00:11:41.76\00:11:43.70 basically says, don't fear, FEAR! 00:11:43.73\00:11:46.78 Don't fear in some way, on some level, but do fear in some way 00:11:46.81\00:11:52.32 on another level. 00:11:52.35\00:11:53.97 That's why it is really not a contradiction of verse like 00:11:54.00\00:11:57.75 Revelation 14, where we are told by the first angel message, 00:11:57.78\00:12:02.15 Fear you God and give glory to Him. 00:12:02.18\00:12:03.91 But then you have 1 John chapter 4 that says, 00:12:03.94\00:12:07.05 perfect love casts out fear. 00:12:07.09\00:12:09.41 So which is it? Fear or no fear? 00:12:09.44\00:12:12.29 Well the fact is, it's both. 00:12:12.32\00:12:13.85 Fear and don't fear. 00:12:13.88\00:12:15.56 Fear God in a reverential way, fear God with love and awe. 00:12:15.59\00:12:21.19 Fear God even with trembling in that awe. 00:12:21.22\00:12:24.67 But don't fear God as a person, don't fear God's 00:12:24.71\00:12:28.48 motives towards you. 00:12:28.52\00:12:29.54 Don't fear God's attitude towards you. 00:12:29.57\00:12:31.96 God loves you, God wants to save you, let His love cast out 00:12:31.99\00:12:36.47 banish all that kind of fear from your heart. 00:12:36.50\00:12:38.41 But instill within us a fear, is what the Bible calls in 00:12:38.44\00:12:44.38 another place, Godly fear. 00:12:44.41\00:12:46.02 Here is another thing that the book of Hebrews 4 is 00:12:46.05\00:12:48.73 working toward, Paul here is encouraging us also to look 00:12:48.76\00:12:53.13 at the experience of ancient Israel, and fear that we would 00:12:53.16\00:12:56.85 follow them and not enter into a different experience. 00:12:56.88\00:12:59.71 Now verse 3 he says, "For we which do believe enter into 00:12:59.74\00:13:03.14 rest as he said, as I have sworn 00:13:03.17\00:13:06.77 in My wrath, they shall enter my rest: 00:13:06.80\00:13:08.08 although the works were 00:13:08.12\00:13:09.67 finished from the foundation of the world. " 00:13:09.70\00:13:11.64 Paul here, and in the following verses, is making a comparison 00:13:11.67\00:13:16.54 between spiritual rest and the seventh-day Sabbath rest. 00:13:16.57\00:13:21.05 The Sabbath rest of the commandments. 00:13:21.09\00:13:23.27 And he is saying there is a spiritual rest and there is a 00:13:23.31\00:13:26.64 Sabbath rest, and he contrasts the two for a, to make a 00:13:26.68\00:13:29.95 very important point and that is this, these Jews, the Nation 00:13:29.98\00:13:34.51 of Israel, while keeping the seventh-day Sabbath, failed 00:13:34.55\00:13:38.16 to enter into spiritual rest, salvation rest in Jesus Christ. 00:13:38.19\00:13:40.90 In fact, when Jesus was crucified, they went to Pilate, 00:13:40.93\00:13:44.30 they went to the Roman governor, and actually asked him 00:13:44.33\00:13:46.89 if they could remove the body of the Messiah, their Redeemer, 00:13:46.92\00:13:51.91 remove that body from the cross, so that they could keep the 00:13:51.94\00:13:54.94 seventh-day Sabbath of the law. 00:13:54.97\00:13:57.50 Now understand this, Paul is not against the law, not 00:13:57.53\00:13:59.64 in anyway, but Paul was raised law-keeping. 00:13:59.67\00:14:02.14 Paul was raised emphasizing the law, Paul was raised 00:14:02.17\00:14:04.59 trusting in the law of salvation and he's realized 00:14:04.63\00:14:06.97 NO! so he is sending a directive here to the Hebrews, a directive 00:14:07.01\00:14:10.86 to the sins of the Galatians, 00:14:10.89\00:14:12.03 NO! We can't trust in salvation by works, 00:14:12.07\00:14:14.58 salvation by the law, that is never been the way God saves. 00:14:14.62\00:14:17.58 We need to look at the experience and realize, there's 00:14:17.62\00:14:20.70 a difference between the way we are saved, 00:14:20.73\00:14:22.40 and the seventh-day Sabbath. 00:14:22.43\00:14:24.12 They are connected, but there is a contrast between the two. 00:14:24.15\00:14:27.51 And we are going to see how they are connected 00:14:27.54\00:14:28.65 as we follow these verses down, but for now he is saying there 00:14:28.68\00:14:31.89 is a distinction between the two let's make that distinction 00:14:31.92\00:14:33.96 clear, we are not saved by keeping the Sabbath, we are 00:14:33.99\00:14:36.44 saved through entering into Christ's rest. 00:14:36.47\00:14:38.85 For now James, we just need to take a short break. 00:14:38.88\00:14:41.03 But we will be right back in a moment to continue 00:14:41.06\00:14:43.34 our study of Hebrews chapter 4. 00:14:43.37\00:14:46.12
