Welcome back friends to our continuing study 00:00:01.98\00:00:03.40 Books of the Book. 00:00:03.43\00:00:04.40 We are in Hebrews Chapter 3, we had just focusing on 00:00:04.41\00:00:07.63 the relational theme that God has developing here for 00:00:07.66\00:00:11.01 us through the Apostle Paul in the book of Hebrews. 00:00:11.04\00:00:13.64 We are looking at Christ as the Master builder, who 00:00:13.67\00:00:15.86 has promised to finish the building project that He 00:00:15.89\00:00:18.46 has begun in us. 00:00:18.49\00:00:19.46 You know James we left off in Chapter 3, 00:00:19.47\00:00:21.68 verse 6, where it just forthrightly says that 00:00:21.71\00:00:25.87 Jesus is engaged in a building project, 00:00:25.90\00:00:28.25 He has a house. 00:00:28.28\00:00:29.67 He is building it and then Paul just said straight 00:00:29.70\00:00:33.12 out, "whose house we are". 00:00:33.15\00:00:34.93 We are His house. 00:00:34.96\00:00:38.14 As we have noticed, in the other scriptures, 00:00:38.17\00:00:40.34 that we have compared, this is again 00:00:40.37\00:00:42.60 relational language. 00:00:42.63\00:00:43.67 This is again a language of intimacy. 00:00:43.70\00:00:46.50 Jesus is desiring, the Father is desiring, to be with us 00:00:46.53\00:00:51.68 for all eternity, in fellowship with Himself. 00:00:51.71\00:00:55.02 I asked a group of young people one time, 00:00:55.05\00:00:56.55 where I was doing in a week of prayer, I asked them 00:00:56.58\00:00:59.22 if I were extremely wealthy, and I hypothetically just 00:00:59.25\00:01:03.85 put this question to you. 00:01:03.88\00:01:05.40 I own the Hawaiian island, of Kauai, and I have evacuated 00:01:05.43\00:01:10.97 the island, I have evicted everybody. 00:01:11.00\00:01:12.78 I owned the whole thing. 00:01:12.81\00:01:13.93 I purchased all the property, and it is just the most 00:01:13.96\00:01:17.38 beautiful place in the whole world. 00:01:17.41\00:01:18.70 It's a paradise, it got mansions, it's got vehicles. 00:01:18.73\00:01:21.58 It's got houses, it's got roads and I am going to give 00:01:21.61\00:01:24.26 it to you as a gift, do you want it? 00:01:24.29\00:01:25.46 And all the young people said, Yeah! We want it! 00:01:25.49\00:01:27.84 Of course we do. 00:01:27.87\00:01:28.84 And then I said, but there's one condition, and that 00:01:28.85\00:01:31.63 is that you have to live there in those mansions, on 00:01:31.66\00:01:34.91 that island, in that paradise. 00:01:34.94\00:01:36.69 You have to live there all eternity, by yourself 00:01:36.72\00:01:40.00 alone, never leave, with no outside contact, 00:01:40.03\00:01:43.12 with no e-mail, no phone calls, and no visitors. 00:01:43.15\00:01:45.13 Do you still want this paradise, this mansion? 00:01:45.16\00:01:49.01 And all of them, without exception, while there were 00:01:49.04\00:01:52.48 just a few very materialistic boys, no girls, 00:01:52.51\00:01:55.05 who said no way we don't want it. 00:01:55.08\00:01:57.87 The illustration was simply to point out that if we 00:01:57.90\00:02:01.69 stop and think about it, we value relationships, 00:02:01.72\00:02:05.02 even our human relationships above material things. 00:02:05.05\00:02:07.63 God is not merely interested in building a house in 00:02:07.66\00:02:10.52 order to give us a place to exist for all eternity. 00:02:10.55\00:02:13.13 He is providing a place for us to have 00:02:13.16\00:02:15.42 fellowship with Himself. 00:02:15.45\00:02:16.96 He values relationship more than anything else and the 00:02:16.99\00:02:20.81 more that we come to know Jesus and His great love for 00:02:20.84\00:02:22.86 us, the more we will value the relationship dimension 00:02:22.89\00:02:26.32 of the plan of salvation. 00:02:26.35\00:02:27.62 Absolutely, and this house is a metaphor, 00:02:27.65\00:02:29.88 this is not literal. 00:02:29.91\00:02:30.96 We are not an inanimate objects here, you know, it 00:02:30.99\00:02:33.80 is very clear when you get to verse 7, here in Hebrews 3, 00:02:33.83\00:02:36.07 "wherefore the Holy Ghost says today is you will hear 00:02:36.10\00:02:38.96 His voice," verse 8, "harden not your hearts". 00:02:38.99\00:02:41.39 In other words, God is seeking a response. 00:02:41.42\00:02:44.07 He is soliciting us to respond to His love. 00:02:44.10\00:02:46.29 He is not forcing Himself upon us, He is asking us to 00:02:46.32\00:02:50.11 respond to what He has accomplished for us. 00:02:50.14\00:02:51.81 In fact, Hebrews 1, Hebrews 2, God takes personal 00:02:51.84\00:02:54.84 responsibility for our sins. 00:02:54.87\00:02:56.38 He becomes a man, divest Himself of His divinity, 00:02:56.41\00:02:59.25 so that He could pay the penalty, the just penalty 00:02:59.28\00:03:01.94 that we deserve, so that He can reveal fully His love 00:03:01.97\00:03:04.67 His mercy and His justice. 00:03:04.70\00:03:06.35 Now He is soliciting our response. 00:03:06.38\00:03:09.39 He is asking us to receive the gift that He has 00:03:09.42\00:03:12.43 bestowed upon us. 00:03:12.46\00:03:13.63 That He has purchased for us through, 00:03:13.66\00:03:15.34 His Son Jesus Christ. 00:03:15.37\00:03:16.48 Everything that we see in the previous chapters so far, 00:03:16.51\00:03:19.71 is Paul bringing home the point of what Jesus has done 00:03:19.74\00:03:24.20 for us, without us. 00:03:24.23\00:03:25.20 He has accomplished, according to Chapter 1, and verse 3. 00:03:25.21\00:03:28.73 He has purged our sins by Himself. 00:03:28.76\00:03:32.19 Without our contributions, without us in anyway giving 00:03:32.22\00:03:36.57 to that salvation, He achieved it by Himself. 00:03:36.60\00:03:39.97 But now, now, the Apostle Paul is saying okay, 00:03:40.00\00:03:43.08 all of this has been achieved for you this great 00:03:43.11\00:03:45.55 salvation, and He is giving, 00:03:45.58\00:03:47.74 He is issuing a warning. 00:03:47.77\00:03:48.75 He said this is serious business. 00:03:48.78\00:03:50.56 God has done all of this while all heaven poured out, 00:03:50.59\00:03:53.85 in this one gift of Jesus Christ. 00:03:53.88\00:03:55.39 Now take this very seriously. 00:03:55.42\00:03:58.33 Paul says and participate, become partakers 00:03:58.36\00:04:01.44 of the heavenly calling. 00:04:01.47\00:04:02.61 Cooperate with God. 00:04:02.64\00:04:04.39 Warning denotes respect. 00:04:04.42\00:04:06.07 Warning denotes honor. 00:04:06.10\00:04:07.71 Because God is not a God of force. 00:04:07.74\00:04:09.75 He recognizes our freedom and He is honoring us. 00:04:09.78\00:04:12.28 He is recognizing that we are beings that have 00:04:12.31\00:04:15.04 freedom and choice and He is honoring that choice. 00:04:15.07\00:04:17.02 He is not going to force us to comply. 00:04:17.05\00:04:18.81 He believes I am sure, a God of love, knows beyond a 00:04:18.84\00:04:22.15 shadow of a doubt, what would be best for us. 00:04:22.18\00:04:24.03 Just like I know what is best for my children. 00:04:24.06\00:04:25.87 I want them to do what I think is best, 00:04:25.90\00:04:28.47 what I know is best, as a mature adult and 00:04:28.50\00:04:30.35 parent who loves them. 00:04:30.38\00:04:31.38 But I can't force that upon them. 00:04:31.41\00:04:33.55 I need to honor and respect their freedom and their 00:04:33.58\00:04:36.10 choice, especially when they get to a certain age, 00:04:36.13\00:04:37.85 which my children are getting to. 00:04:37.88\00:04:38.95 By the way, your children's are long past my children age. 00:04:38.98\00:04:42.52 I mean, earlier you mentioned that we've known each 00:04:42.55\00:04:44.59 other since you were 10 or 11 years old. 00:04:44.62\00:04:46.25 I don't think so, Ty, don't try that. 00:04:46.28\00:04:47.99 You, you are a grandpa. 00:04:48.02\00:04:50.76 That's right, that's right. 00:04:50.79\00:04:52.07 With two lovely grandchildren. 00:04:52.10\00:04:53.69 That's wonderful. 00:04:53.72\00:04:54.69 Praise God. Praise God. 00:04:54.70\00:04:55.75 And so we look at this, we look at this analogy 00:04:55.78\00:04:57.30 and we see here that Paul leads right into an 00:04:57.33\00:05:00.09 Old Testament illustration. 00:05:00.12\00:05:01.79 He is talking about the wandering in the wilderness. 00:05:01.82\00:05:04.00 He's talking about how God had to prove something. 00:05:04.03\00:05:06.75 He had to prove the way that He is, He promised them that 00:05:06.78\00:05:10.75 they could have the promised land, the heavenly Canaan. 00:05:10.78\00:05:12.97 And they refuse to go in. 00:05:13.00\00:05:15.03 They bought the majority report of the 12 spies, ten 00:05:15.06\00:05:19.24 of them said it's a land that is impossible for us to conquer. 00:05:19.27\00:05:22.57 We can't go in there and they said we can't go in. 00:05:22.60\00:05:25.07 So God said okay. 00:05:25.10\00:05:26.07 You don't believe My word that I can deliver that 00:05:26.08\00:05:28.52 land to you, you're going to wander in the wilderness 00:05:28.55\00:05:30.60 for 40 years. 00:05:30.63\00:05:31.60 They changed their mind, then. 00:05:31.61\00:05:32.58 Then they decided, we can go in, but you know God didn't 00:05:32.59\00:05:35.85 not allow them, why? 00:05:35.88\00:05:36.85 Because God had to prove, not that He is right and 00:05:36.86\00:05:41.21 they are wrong. 00:05:41.24\00:05:42.31 Not that well I punished you and I got to carry 00:05:42.34\00:05:45.50 through with that punishment. 00:05:45.53\00:05:46.50 But that His word trustworthy. 00:05:46.51\00:05:47.81 When God says you are going to wonder for 40 years, 00:05:47.84\00:05:49.90 He followed through with that, so they could at least 00:05:49.93\00:05:53.07 come out of this trusting His word. 00:05:53.10\00:05:54.88 Not only is His word trustworthy, but also 00:05:54.91\00:05:58.68 His word is powerful. 00:05:58.71\00:06:00.47 His word is the source of power for the fulfilling of 00:06:00.50\00:06:04.27 the promises that He makes. 00:06:04.30\00:06:06.41 So these Israelites in the wilderness, when the two 00:06:06.44\00:06:10.39 spies that were faithful came back, Joshua and Caleb 00:06:10.42\00:06:12.99 and said, yes there are giants there. 00:06:13.02\00:06:14.76 but in God's power and God's grace we are more than 00:06:14.79\00:06:18.25 able to enter into this Canaan, this promised land. 00:06:18.28\00:06:22.02 The unfaithful spies said No Way! 00:06:22.05\00:06:24.25 I mean those giants are huge. 00:06:24.28\00:06:26.19 We can not enter into this land, we will be defeated. 00:06:26.22\00:06:29.45 They were blind to the power of God. 00:06:29.48\00:06:32.09 They were blind to the grace of God, with Joshua and 00:06:32.12\00:06:34.62 Caleb were discerning. 00:06:34.65\00:06:36.30 And so they give this bad report, no way, we can't enter. 00:06:36.33\00:06:39.81 God said, that's right you are not going to enter. 00:06:39.84\00:06:42.40 And then they changed their minds and said 00:06:42.43\00:06:44.00 wait a minute, wait a minute, now we want to enter. 00:06:44.03\00:06:47.12 And God said, no. 00:06:47.15\00:06:49.06 You can't enter because you need a mental 00:06:49.09\00:06:52.27 and heart adjustment. 00:06:52.30\00:06:54.58 You need to understand that the only way that you can 00:06:54.61\00:06:57.68 conquer these giants, the only way that you can enter 00:06:57.71\00:07:00.70 this promised land, is by the enabling power of My 00:07:00.73\00:07:04.22 grace pouring through you, and until you understand 00:07:04.25\00:07:07.42 that, you are destined for defeat. 00:07:07.45\00:07:10.26 They needed to learn how to trust God's Word. 00:07:10.29\00:07:12.23 Therefore God could not just simply turn around 00:07:12.26\00:07:14.93 because when God says you are going to wander through 00:07:14.96\00:07:16.75 the wilderness for 40 years, those were the words and 00:07:16.78\00:07:18.51 there was power in those words, and for Him to follow through 00:07:18.54\00:07:21.22 and allow them to wander for 40 years, would at 00:07:21.25\00:07:24.33 least bring them through that experience with a 00:07:24.36\00:07:26.20 confidence and a trust. 00:07:26.23\00:07:28.04 That's right. 00:07:28.07\00:07:29.04 Future generations confidence and trust. 00:07:29.05\00:07:30.20 It's like my wife and I, 00:07:30.23\00:07:32.51 we are dealing with our children. 00:07:32.54\00:07:33.81 And sometimes we have to discipline them. 00:07:33.84\00:07:35.26 And the worst thing we can do is tell them that they're 00:07:35.29\00:07:38.49 going to have a certain discipline, then fail to follow 00:07:38.52\00:07:41.21 through with that discipline because, what do they do 00:07:41.24\00:07:43.22 next time they hear us say no, this is not going to happen. 00:07:43.25\00:07:46.76 But they think if they keep on asking, asking, asking, 00:07:46.79\00:07:49.90 asking, they can finally wear us down, that our word is 00:07:49.93\00:07:52.59 not good, that we cannot be trusted to follow through. 00:07:52.62\00:07:54.88 If we can't trust God for what He says, there is no 00:07:54.91\00:07:59.09 way that we will ever be able to have enough confidence 00:07:59.12\00:08:01.58 enough faith to going to the promised land. 00:08:01.61\00:08:02.89 James, I think it is incredible that 00:08:02.92\00:08:05.33 God is inviting trust. 00:08:05.36\00:08:07.63 That God wants us to trust Him as the basis of this 00:08:07.66\00:08:11.53 relationship, because let's face it, God is omnipotent, 00:08:11.56\00:08:14.52 He is all-powerful. 00:08:14.55\00:08:15.55 And if He wanted to, He could just force our actions, 00:08:15.58\00:08:18.82 force our behavior. 00:08:18.85\00:08:20.00 But God is aiming for something more, and that's why 00:08:20.03\00:08:22.87 the issue here, or the central point that Paul is making 00:08:22.90\00:08:26.26 in these initial verses, is that God is focused 00:08:26.29\00:08:28.55 on the heart. 00:08:28.58\00:08:29.55 He says you are my house, I want to inhabit you. 00:08:29.56\00:08:32.22 I want to build you, I want to make you a habitation 00:08:32.25\00:08:36.03 for the Holy Spirit. 00:08:36.06\00:08:37.41 But don't harden your heart, become sensitive 00:08:37.44\00:08:40.30 and open to me. 00:08:40.33\00:08:41.45 Allow Me access, I want access, but you need 00:08:41.48\00:08:44.95 to open the door. 00:08:44.98\00:08:45.96 And then it goes on here, in this context and talks 00:08:45.99\00:08:49.19 about God's wrath. 00:08:49.23\00:08:50.25 Now friends, we need to understand that God's wrath is 00:08:50.28\00:08:53.29 different than man's wrath. 00:08:53.32\00:08:54.33 When I am dealing with my children, and they do 00:08:54.36\00:08:57.05 something that they need discipline for, and then 00:08:57.08\00:08:59.04 they are sorry, or they repent. 00:08:59.07\00:09:00.96 I want to, in every way, and I'm sure all of us do as 00:09:00.99\00:09:04.22 parents we want to be merciful. 00:09:04.25\00:09:06.43 We want to change our decisions, but then we realized 00:09:06.46\00:09:10.06 wait a minute. 00:09:10.09\00:09:11.06 If I change, if I compromise 00:09:11.07\00:09:13.48 my decision here, I may undermine the stability and 00:09:13.51\00:09:17.21 the trust that my children are going to have in my 00:09:17.24\00:09:19.06 word in the future. 00:09:19.09\00:09:20.06 So sometimes we have to follow through discipline, even 00:09:20.07\00:09:22.99 though our hearts desire is that we ought not to 00:09:23.02\00:09:27.94 allow this to happen. Sometimes we have to allow the 00:09:27.97\00:09:29.92 consequences to come and that is how God's Word 00:09:29.95\00:09:32.55 defines His wrath, God's wrath is not arbitrary. 00:09:32.58\00:09:36.35 It's not like man's wrath God's wrath releases. 00:09:36.38\00:09:39.86 God's wrath allows us to taste consequences and many times 00:09:39.89\00:09:45.04 man's wrath places, in other words, it's arbitrary wrath 00:09:45.07\00:09:49.86 that in a sense, kind of imposes, imposes, that's the 00:09:49.89\00:09:52.97 word I'm looking for, imposes. 00:09:53.00\00:09:53.97 Where God's wrath releases. 00:09:54.00\00:09:56.08 Man's wrath is vindictive. 00:09:56.11\00:09:58.38 God's wrath is consequential and will we look at that, 00:09:58.41\00:10:02.17 we parallel that we recognize that behind God's wrath, 00:10:02.20\00:10:04.86 is this struggle to let us go to the consequences we 00:10:04.89\00:10:11.36 chosen, but this principle of honoring our free choice. 00:10:11.39\00:10:15.47 Yeah, it's amazing! 00:10:15.50\00:10:17.07 In Hosea, God is contemplating what He is going through 00:10:17.10\00:10:22.50 with His hardhearted people. 00:10:22.53\00:10:24.39 He has this pleading, aching tone in His wrath. 00:10:24.42\00:10:29.01 He says I am angry, and then He expresses that anger in 00:10:29.04\00:10:32.53 words like these, He says, "how can I give you up, 00:10:32.56\00:10:35.48 My heart churns within me with sympathy, 00:10:35.51\00:10:38.90 I don't want you to be lost. 00:10:38.93\00:10:41.46 I don't want you to be injured. 00:10:41.49\00:10:42.98 I don't watch to be hurt, but you've really given Me 00:10:43.01\00:10:45.18 no choice in this matter. 00:10:45.21\00:10:47.42 I have no options left because of the choice that 00:10:47.45\00:10:50.86 that you're being completely set in is not 00:10:50.89\00:10:54.64 a choice that I can make for you." 00:10:54.67\00:10:55.96 Look at these verses Ty,in the context of what you 00:10:55.99\00:10:58.36 just talked about. 00:10:58.40\00:10:59.37 Hebrews 3 verses 9, 10, and 11, let's just read them. 00:10:59.38\00:11:02.74 "When your fathers tempted, me proved me, and saw my works 00:11:02.77\00:11:07.02 for 40 years; wherefore I was grieved with that generation 00:11:07.05\00:11:09.80 said that they always erred in their heart and they have 00:11:09.83\00:11:13.07 not known my ways, so I swore my wrath, they shall not 00:11:13.10\00:11:17.68 enter into my rest." 00:11:17.71\00:11:19.62 There's three key phrases here, they proved me, they 00:11:19.65\00:11:23.66 didn't know My ways, and there is My wrath. 00:11:23.69\00:11:25.91 What God is doing for 40 years, He is proving that His 00:11:25.94\00:11:30.21 ways are consistent. 00:11:30.24\00:11:32.24 They are trustworthy, He can be trusted. 00:11:32.27\00:11:34.03 His wrath is allowing us to reap the consequences of 00:11:34.06\00:11:37.21 our choices so that we can prove that His ways are 00:11:37.24\00:11:39.80 the best ways. 00:11:39.83\00:11:40.80 His work can be trusted and therefore through 00:11:40.81\00:11:43.36 confidence in His word His power can be released 00:11:43.39\00:11:46.05 and seen in our lives. 00:11:46.08\00:11:47.07 Now James perhaps the final point, we can make in the 00:11:47.10\00:11:49.51 time that we have left is that Paul clearly draws our 00:11:49.54\00:11:52.98 attention to the rebellion of Israel in the wilderness. 00:11:53.01\00:11:57.73 And there, according to the account of that rebellion 00:11:57.76\00:12:00.72 in the Old Testament. 00:12:00.75\00:12:02.05 In Exodus, there is clearly a key misunderstanding 00:12:02.08\00:12:06.84 that set them up for this failure, and this rebellion. 00:12:06.87\00:12:09.81 These people in the wilderness, they encountered God, 00:12:09.84\00:12:15.38 and then they turned to Moses and said Moses, 00:12:15.41\00:12:18.83 we are not in any way, prepared or interested in 00:12:18.86\00:12:24.60 God speaking directly to us and having a 00:12:24.63\00:12:27.69 relationship with God. 00:12:27.72\00:12:28.73 Moses you speak to us. 00:12:28.76\00:12:30.57 You tell us what God says, but 00:12:30.60\00:12:32.57 never let God talk to us again. 00:12:32.60\00:12:34.19 They wanted to obey God's law without entering 00:12:34.22\00:12:38.36 into a relationship with Him. 00:12:38.39\00:12:40.00 Yes, they wanted Moses to be the one to go between. 00:12:40.03\00:12:42.94 You know, what is really interesting and powerful Ty, is 00:12:42.97\00:12:45.28 when you look at their rebellion in the light of 00:12:45.31\00:12:47.94 Moses' experience, you find that 00:12:47.97\00:12:49.81 God's wrath even came upon Moses. 00:12:49.84\00:12:51.89 He died in the wilderness, and yet the heart of God 00:12:51.92\00:12:54.74 is revealed here, Moses had this relationship with God. 00:12:54.77\00:12:57.28 And Moses eventually was resurrected and is in heaven. 00:12:57.31\00:13:00.64 And that's the hope that we have friends, that in the 00:13:00.67\00:13:03.62 heart of God, in spite of our rebellion, and in spite of 00:13:03.65\00:13:06.13 our turning from Him. 00:13:06.16\00:13:07.15 In the heart of God, He wants us to be there with Him. 00:13:07.18\00:13:09.52 He will do everything He can to make sure that 00:13:09.55\00:13:12.16 He finishes the work He has begun in us. 00:13:12.19\00:13:14.03 We are not finishers, but Jesus Christ is the Finisher. 00:13:14.06\00:13:18.02
