Unfinished projects, we all have them. 00:00:21.09\00:00:23.96 The ongoing task, assignment, or job can 00:00:23.99\00:00:26.40 sometimes be overwhelming. 00:00:26.43\00:00:27.64 We're not always finishers, but Jesus says, 00:00:27.68\00:00:30.87 "and we are His house and He is the builder. " 00:00:30.90\00:00:34.02 Hello friends, I'm James Rafferty, your co-host, with 00:00:34.06\00:00:36.90 Ty Gibson and we are studying the Books of the Book. 00:00:36.93\00:00:39.70 We are in the books of Hebrews, and we are in Chapter 3. 00:00:39.74\00:00:42.47 Ty how long have we known each other? 00:00:42.50\00:00:43.81 Let's see, I guess we have known each other for I say, 00:00:43.84\00:00:48.47 about 20 to 23 years, since I was about 10. 00:00:48.51\00:00:51.49 And when we first met it seemed as though, I mean in our young, 00:00:51.52\00:00:55.53 enthusiastic fervor in Jesus Christ, 00:00:55.57\00:00:59.49 because we met in Jesus Christ. 00:00:59.53\00:01:00.56 It seems as though we felt we were pretty 00:01:00.60\00:01:03.02 much finished products. 00:01:03.05\00:01:04.40 But over those 23 or so years, I think that we have realized 00:01:04.43\00:01:07.82 that there is a lot of unfinished parts in the home, 00:01:07.85\00:01:11.37 the building that Christ has been working on 00:01:11.41\00:01:14.11 in each one of us. 00:01:14.15\00:01:15.13 And we have seen a lot of that. 00:01:15.17\00:01:16.14 Do you have any less confidence that Christ can finish 00:01:16.15\00:01:19.35 the work that He has started in us? 00:01:19.39\00:01:20.42 I don't have any less confidence that Jesus can finish the 00:01:20.46\00:01:23.51 work, but you are right, James. 00:01:23.55\00:01:24.86 It's incredible the more you learn, the less you know. 00:01:24.89\00:01:29.73 More imperfect you see yourself to be. 00:01:29.77\00:01:33.70 That's why I really appreciate Hebrews 3. 00:01:33.73\00:01:35.70 Because Hebrews 3 pictures Christ as a home builder, 00:01:35.74\00:01:38.95 as the one who is building us. 00:01:38.98\00:01:40.63 We have been introduced to Christ as God and Christ as man. 00:01:40.67\00:01:43.88 Now we move into Chapter 3, where we see Christ as the 00:01:43.91\00:01:47.65 builder, we are encouraged to have confidence in Him. 00:01:47.69\00:01:51.36 Let's ask our viewers to open their Bibles with us, if they 00:01:51.40\00:01:53.71 have them to Hebrews Chapter 3. 00:01:53.74\00:01:55.43 This is an incredible chapter James, because the Apostle 00:01:55.47\00:02:00.13 Paul is drawing conclusions from what he has developed in 00:02:00.17\00:02:04.80 Chapters 1 and 2. 00:02:04.84\00:02:06.71 He begins again, as he does often, in the book of Hebrews 00:02:06.74\00:02:10.23 with the word, "therefore". 00:02:10.26\00:02:12.27 Which of course is referring back to ground 00:02:12.31\00:02:15.39 he has already covered. 00:02:15.42\00:02:16.54 He drawing conclusions now from points that he has 00:02:16.58\00:02:19.79 developed, "therefore!" 00:02:19.82\00:02:21.84 "Considering these things that we have covered holy 00:02:21.88\00:02:24.79 brother, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the 00:02:24.83\00:02:29.79 apostle and high Priest of our confession Jesus Christ. " 00:02:29.82\00:02:33.89 This is amazing, James, because what we see here, first 00:02:33.93\00:02:38.55 of all is Paul is addressing the believers in Christ, 00:02:38.58\00:02:43.13 that whatever stage of growth and development they are at, 00:02:43.16\00:02:46.16 as holy brethren. 00:02:46.19\00:02:48.67 And we tend to want to say, who is he talking to who, 00:02:48.71\00:02:52.35 is that who are the holy brethren and sisters that 00:02:52.38\00:02:55.99 are being addressed here? 00:02:56.02\00:02:57.23 Which is very clear in the context of Hebrews, because we 00:02:57.26\00:03:00.68 find a lot of imperfections. 00:03:00.72\00:03:02.27 And lot of unfinished work. 00:03:02.31\00:03:03.79 As Paul continues to address this group of people, 00:03:03.83\00:03:07.03 Christianity in general, and so it is very enlightening 00:03:07.07\00:03:10.83 for us to recognize that what Paul is doing here, is he 00:03:10.87\00:03:14.60 looking at us as we are in Jesus. 00:03:14.64\00:03:17.16 As we are through Christ. 00:03:17.19\00:03:18.89 As we are with Him as our Master Builder. 00:03:18.93\00:03:21.20 One of the great truths of the Gospels James, is that 00:03:21.24\00:03:24.75 once we become partakers of heavenly calling, once we 00:03:24.78\00:03:28.24 recognize our position in Christ and by faith come to 00:03:28.27\00:03:31.70 Him, it's incredible that God looks upon us. 00:03:31.73\00:03:35.86 Not because He's ignorant, or because He's deceived, but 00:03:35.89\00:03:38.88 because God is love. 00:03:38.91\00:03:40.01 He looks upon us in such a way as He allows His love 00:03:40.05\00:03:45.51 to cover a multitude of sins. 00:03:45.54\00:03:47.24 In other words, He knows we're sinners. 00:03:47.28\00:03:49.12 But He relates to us as if we've never sinned, as if, 00:03:49.15\00:03:52.82 in fact, we are holy brethren and sisters that in fact 00:03:52.85\00:03:56.48 are not holy, but He recognize us as such. 00:03:56.52\00:04:00.41 The Apostle Paul develops this in a number of places. 00:04:00.45\00:04:03.73 But I think in 2 Corinthians, Chapter 5, where he says 00:04:03.77\00:04:07.35 that the way God reconciles us to Himself is by not 00:04:07.38\00:04:10.93 imputing our trespasses unto us. 00:04:10.97\00:04:13.62 Or another version says, not counting men's 00:04:13.66\00:04:16.65 sins against them. 00:04:16.69\00:04:18.18 I was going to ask you, do you do that from a different 00:04:18.22\00:04:19.40 version, that imputing, 00:04:19.44\00:04:20.67 it's kind of a complicated word, not counting men's sins 00:04:20.71\00:04:23.08 against them and this is what we see in Hebrews 1 and 2. 00:04:23.12\00:04:25.42 In fact, in doing this it seems to me that God has given us 00:04:25.45\00:04:30.45 something that causes us to trust Him. 00:04:30.49\00:04:32.83 You know you can't really follow some one, even consider 00:04:32.87\00:04:35.88 someone, even be open and listen to what they have to say, 00:04:35.91\00:04:38.67 unless you have a little bit of confidence or trust in them. 00:04:38.71\00:04:41.43 And so Paul has first introduced us to God in a sense. 00:04:41.47\00:04:45.18 He has encouraged us to have some confidence, to have 00:04:45.22\00:04:48.79 some trust in Him and in doing that, we are opening our 00:04:48.82\00:04:52.36 hearts to listen now to more and understand more about 00:04:52.39\00:04:57.00 this plan of salvation. 00:04:57.03\00:04:58.00 And the way in which that trust builds momentum, 00:04:58.01\00:05:00.47 and strength and becomes more vital and alive 00:05:00.50\00:05:02.95 is in this word. 00:05:02.99\00:05:05.40 The secret of that strengthening 00:05:05.44\00:05:07.12 is in this word "consider". 00:05:07.15\00:05:09.68 Here the Apostle is telling us that the way in which we, 00:05:09.71\00:05:13.34 as fallen human beings, who have now come into Christ, 00:05:13.38\00:05:16.69 and become partakers of the heavenly calling, he says, 00:05:16.72\00:05:19.99 Here's what I want you do, I want to give you 00:05:20.03\00:05:21.46 some practical advice. 00:05:21.49\00:05:22.85 I'm not going to leave this theoretical I'm going to tell 00:05:22.89\00:05:25.43 you exactly what you need to, do you need to consider Him. 00:05:25.46\00:05:28.72 Which means you need to contemplate, you need to think 00:05:28.75\00:05:31.93 about, you need to ponder the Lord Jesus Christ, in all 00:05:31.97\00:05:35.11 that He is and all that He means to you. 00:05:35.15\00:05:36.97 Paul does says this in other places. 00:05:37.01\00:05:38.77 Later on in Hebrews, instead of the word consider, but the 00:05:38.80\00:05:42.57 same concept, he says in Chapter 12, "looking unto Jesus, 00:05:42.60\00:05:46.33 the author and finisher of our faith", 00:05:46.36\00:05:47.72 in 2 Corinthians 3: 18, 00:05:47.76\00:05:49.37 he uses the word behold the glory of God, in Christ Jesus. 00:05:49.41\00:05:53.34 In Revelation 5, "behold the Lamb of God". 1 John 1:29, 00:05:53.37\00:05:57.27 "behold the Lamb of God". 00:05:57.31\00:05:58.61 Yes, so if this process of considering, this process of 00:05:58.64\00:06:02.50 beholding, which is exactly what we are doing here as 00:06:02.54\00:06:06.38 we study the Word of God, is the process by which we 00:06:06.41\00:06:10.19 become more and more grounded in our position in Christ. 00:06:10.22\00:06:14.03 We become more and more appreciative of 00:06:14.06\00:06:15.53 all that we see in Jesus Christ. 00:06:15.57\00:06:17.85 And on a practical level, we partake more and more 00:06:17.89\00:06:21.04 fully of Christ. 00:06:21.08\00:06:22.05 Absolutely, and now Hebrews Chapter 3, continues on 00:06:22.08\00:06:25.02 here and talks about, in the context, talks about in these 00:06:25.05\00:06:28.50 few verses, about this better house that God is building. 00:06:28.54\00:06:31.82 He is the builder of this house, and then he does something, 00:06:31.85\00:06:35.30 that I think is again indicative if of the idea that Paul 00:06:35.34\00:06:38.63 is the author of Hebrews, he uses an illustration that is 00:06:38.67\00:06:41.93 used in other places in Paul's writings. 00:06:41.97\00:06:43.82 He parallels Moses and his house to God or Christ and the 00:06:43.85\00:06:49.10 house that He is building us. 00:06:49.13\00:06:50.31 And then begins to talk about Moses and talk about the 00:06:50.35\00:06:53.75 wilderness sojourning of God's people, the wilderness 00:06:53.78\00:06:57.15 wandering of God's people. 00:06:57.19\00:06:58.31 There Israel in the Old Testament and draws history 00:06:58.35\00:07:01.16 lessons, parallels to us today that we can learn from. 00:07:01.19\00:07:04.28 Well, we all know that according to the Gospel account. 00:07:04.31\00:07:07.37 Jesus was builder. 00:07:07.40\00:07:09.07 Jesus was a carpenter, but He didn't come just to build 00:07:09.11\00:07:12.76 furniture and houses, as He was no doubt educated to do by his 00:07:12.79\00:07:17.75 father, Joseph, as he was raised there in 00:07:17.78\00:07:20.00 the village of Nazareth. 00:07:20.04\00:07:21.01 Jesus got down to business, got down to what He really came 00:07:21.02\00:07:23.61 for when He entered into Ministry, and His ministry 00:07:23.64\00:07:27.09 James, was no less a building project. 00:07:27.13\00:07:30.61 Right. 00:07:30.65\00:07:31.62 In any carpentry endeavor, He is building a spiritual 00:07:31.63\00:07:35.76 house, as He is building souls, and spirits up in Himself 00:07:35.80\00:07:39.90 to become the full stature of men and women in Christ. 00:07:39.93\00:07:44.00 So all of us really are unfinished projects. 00:07:44.03\00:07:47.36 And some of us are real projects. 00:07:47.40\00:07:50.03 I don't know if you've ever tried to build a house or ever 00:07:50.07\00:07:52.36 started from scratch. 00:07:52.40\00:07:53.37 I have and let me tell you Ty, I was not experienced at all. 00:07:53.38\00:07:57.73 In fact, I didn't even know how to square a wall when I 00:07:57.76\00:08:00.47 first started building a home. 00:08:00.51\00:08:01.57 As I move through this process I learned as I went, 00:08:01.61\00:08:06.57 from other people and got a lot of help. 00:08:06.61\00:08:08.00 Jesus is building human beings. 00:08:08.04\00:08:11.92 He is restoring them to the image of God, and some of 00:08:11.95\00:08:13.96 us are real projects. 00:08:14.00\00:08:14.97 Some of us are real restoration projects. 00:08:14.99\00:08:17.20 But we can be confident of this one thing, Philippians 1, 00:08:17.23\00:08:19.79 tells us that, "he who has begun the work is able to 00:08:19.83\00:08:22.57 finish the work until the very end. " 00:08:22.60\00:08:24.09 Yeah, I ventured into a building project myself James. 00:08:24.12\00:08:27.23 I built my own house and I will never forget it because just 00:08:27.26\00:08:30.37 the time it let alone the energy and all the things 00:08:30.40\00:08:33.79 that I had to learn. 00:08:33.83\00:08:34.80 It took myself and my three children and my wife 00:08:34.81\00:08:38.55 occasionally helping us, it took us two years and eight 00:08:38.58\00:08:41.20 months to build that house until we can finally move in. 00:08:41.23\00:08:45.06 Just lay down on the carpet and say it is finally done. 00:08:45.09\00:08:49.66 Jesus is engaged in a spiritual building project 00:08:49.69\00:08:53.89 with every one of us. 00:08:53.93\00:08:55.38 Ephesians Chapter 2, is a parallel Scripture that 00:08:55.42\00:08:58.94 explains that not only are we as individuals a building 00:08:58.97\00:09:03.20 project that the Lord is engaged in 00:09:03.24\00:09:05.98 perfecting and developing. 00:09:06.02\00:09:07.48 But there is a sense, a corporate sense James, in 00:09:07.52\00:09:11.34 which the Church and all of its members 00:09:11.38\00:09:14.03 are a building project. 00:09:14.07\00:09:16.86 There is a unified sense in which together you and me, 00:09:16.89\00:09:21.19 and our brothers and sisters in Christ form a 00:09:21.22\00:09:24.81 living temple for the Lord. 00:09:24.84\00:09:26.92 In Chapter 2 of Ephesians, and specifically verses 19 to 22 00:09:26.96\00:09:33.31 "Now, therefore you are no longer strangers and foreigners 00:09:33.34\00:09:36.16 but fellow citizens with the Saints and members of the 00:09:36.20\00:09:40.48 household of God. " 00:09:40.51\00:09:42.40 Verse 20. "Having been built upon the foundation of the 00:09:42.43\00:09:46.76 apostles and prophets Jesus Christ Himself being the chief 00:09:46.80\00:09:50.36 corner stone and in whom", and this is the key, "in whom 00:09:50.40\00:09:55.30 the whole building being fitly framed together grows into 00:09:55.34\00:10:00.73 a holy temple in the Lord in whom you also are being built 00:10:00.76\00:10:06.12 together for a dwelling place of God in the spirit. " 00:10:06.16\00:10:10.44 We are being built as a house for the indwelling 00:10:10.48\00:10:14.73 of God's Spirit. 00:10:14.77\00:10:15.74 God in Revelation, God points out the bride of Christ. 00:10:15.75\00:10:18.68 And the bride of Christ, it says there in 00:10:18.71\00:10:20.97 Revelation 19, is a city. 00:10:21.00\00:10:22.17 And you think, a city why is it a city, because the 00:10:22.20\00:10:25.04 city symbolizes God's people, God's church. 00:10:25.08\00:10:28.85 The city has 12 foundations, each one has the name of 00:10:28.89\00:10:32.11 one of the apostles. 00:10:32.15\00:10:33.12 The city has 12 gates each one has the name of 00:10:33.13\00:10:35.93 one of the tribes. 00:10:35.97\00:10:37.00 those tribes, those apostles foundation gates of the city 00:10:37.03\00:10:41.20 represent the place in which God's people are going to 00:10:41.23\00:10:45.36 dwell for all eternity. 00:10:45.40\00:10:46.45 Every single one of the redeemers will have a place, 00:10:46.48\00:10:48.58 a mansion and we are told. 00:10:48.61\00:10:50.03 in John Chapter 14, a place in that city, and we are 00:10:50.07\00:10:53.79 going to be welcomed there in that place. 00:10:53.82\00:10:55.17 And it's incredible, because it is not just a big 00:10:55.21\00:10:58.48 impersonal place to live, but very clearly the sense 00:10:58.51\00:11:03.88 in Scripture, like Paul says in Ephesians 2 text, 00:11:03.92\00:11:08.09 we are members of the household of God. 00:11:08.12\00:11:10.26 I like a translation of the text in John 14, where it 00:11:10.30\00:11:14.74 says that we have mansions that are being prepared for us. 00:11:14.77\00:11:17.53 It is very interesting because one version says, 00:11:17.56\00:11:19.97 "in my father's house are many rooms". 00:11:20.01\00:11:22.62 Many rooms, I mean, there are definitely going to be 00:11:22.65\00:11:25.26 glorious rooms on a mansion level, according to scripture. 00:11:25.30\00:11:28.39 This will be incredible, but at the same time, they are not just 00:11:28.42\00:11:31.06 mansions, the emphasis is not on the material stuff. 00:11:31.09\00:11:34.34 It's not just a, posh apartments where I be walking on 00:11:34.38\00:11:37.48 gold in heaven. 00:11:37.52\00:11:38.49 And there's pearly gates, but in that place the 00:11:38.50\00:11:41.56 real issue is not the gates of Pearl. 00:11:41.60\00:11:43.64 It's not the streets of gold. 00:11:43.67\00:11:45.07 Is not the mansions. 00:11:45.10\00:11:46.51 The emphasis is, we are going to dwell in God's household. 00:11:46.55\00:11:50.01 We are going to have rooms in the household of God. 00:11:50.04\00:11:52.37 Yes, we are going to be family. 00:11:52.41\00:11:53.63 There is going to be a place for us. 00:11:53.66\00:11:55.99 And if I'm going to prepare a place for you, Jesus says in 00:11:56.02\00:11:58.78 John 14, if I have a place for you, I'm going to come back, 00:11:58.81\00:12:01.75 and I am going to take you where I am so that we can be 00:12:01.79\00:12:04.70 there together for ever. 00:12:04.73\00:12:06.63 You may be with Me, He says, and we all know from our human 00:12:06.67\00:12:10.67 experiences and this is a great way to think about it 00:12:10.71\00:12:13.36 in order to really get the point. 00:12:13.39\00:12:14.81 It is that, we all know, as human beings that there are 00:12:14.85\00:12:18.01 individuals, maybe a friend, maybe a wife or husband, 00:12:18.04\00:12:21.16 or grandma or grandpa, uncle and aunt. 00:12:21.20\00:12:23.56 Just somebody who is a good friend on some level. 00:12:23.59\00:12:26.85 There are individuals who we just enjoyed being with. 00:12:26.89\00:12:30.12 We just want to be in their presence. 00:12:30.15\00:12:31.57 We would just want to hang out with them. 00:12:31.61\00:12:32.96 We can even hangout with them on a long drive and be 00:12:32.99\00:12:35.73 silent and be perfectly content and feel like our 00:12:35.77\00:12:38.47 journey is just a higher-quality journey, 00:12:38.50\00:12:41.42 because we are with those that we love. 00:12:41.45\00:12:44.29 And here Jesus comes to us, and He doesn't say, 00:12:44.33\00:12:47.53 I just want to save you, He pleads in John Chapter 17, 00:12:47.57\00:12:51.19 He says Father, "I pray that those whom you have given 00:12:51.23\00:12:54.82 me may be with me where I am. " 00:12:54.86\00:12:58.37 He wants us to be sharers in fellowship with Him for all 00:12:58.40\00:13:03.17 eternity future as members of the household of God. 00:13:03.20\00:13:06.00 It's the same in this world friends this world is full 00:13:06.04\00:13:08.67 of a material attractions and sometimes we get distracted. 00:13:08.71\00:13:11.86 We get so filled up and so focused on the material things 00:13:11.89\00:13:14.64 that we think are going to fill our souls and our hearts, 00:13:14.67\00:13:17.39 and they don't. 00:13:17.42\00:13:18.39 They do not in the end bring us the joy and satisfaction 00:13:18.40\00:13:21.08 they are empty without people and personal relationships. 00:13:21.12\00:13:24.06 So the whole book of Ephesians excuse me, of Hebrews 00:13:24.10\00:13:26.81 along with the rest of the Bible is pointing us to a 00:13:26.85\00:13:29.53 personal relationship with Christ. 00:13:29.56\00:13:30.99 Even if you are a Christian. 00:13:31.02\00:13:32.59 Even if you are religious. 00:13:32.63\00:13:34.13 Even if you do many wonderful things in miracles 00:13:34.16\00:13:36.75 in Christ's name. 00:13:36.78\00:13:37.75 If you don't know Him as your personal Savior, 00:13:37.76\00:13:40.43 all that becomes insignificant. 00:13:40.46\00:13:42.70 God wants to inhabit us. 00:13:42.74\00:13:45.40 He wants to have a relationship with us. 00:13:45.43\00:13:47.24 He wants to abide with us. 00:13:47.28\00:13:48.40 He wants to walk with us as He did the Garden of Eden. 00:13:48.44\00:13:51.55 This is going to be our focus as we continue our 00:13:51.58\00:13:54.02 study in the book of Hebrews. 00:13:54.06\00:13:55.59 Don't go away because we'll be right back after this. 00:13:55.62\00:13:59.18
