We appreciate you staying with us for our continuing 00:00:01.98\00:00:03.12 study in Hebrews Chapter 2. 00:00:03.16\00:00:05.04 And James, we were noticing that there is a justice 00:00:05.08\00:00:09.38 dimension to the character of God. 00:00:09.41\00:00:11.83 There is justice in the universe, a just God created 00:00:11.86\00:00:14.82 the universe and right there the Apostle, Paul brings 00:00:14.86\00:00:18.27 to our attention, that this justice aspect of the 00:00:18.31\00:00:21.69 character of God. 00:00:21.73\00:00:22.70 It has to be met, it has to be reconciled. 00:00:22.71\00:00:25.96 It's not an arbitrary type of thing though Ty. 00:00:26.00\00:00:27.82 Sometimes people will think of God as arbitrary 00:00:27.86\00:00:29.61 in being just, God is arbitrary and punishment towards sin. 00:00:29.65\00:00:33.33 You sinned you disobeyed me, I am going to recompense that. 00:00:33.36\00:00:37.01 Like a parent disciplining their child, No! 00:00:37.05\00:00:38.88 This is consequential. 00:00:38.91\00:00:40.71 In other words sin brings a consequence. 00:00:40.75\00:00:43.46 The wages of sin is death. 00:00:43.50\00:00:45.42 That is what the Bible teaches and God understands 00:00:45.46\00:00:47.66 that even better than we do. 00:00:47.70\00:00:48.80 So, what God has done basically, is even though we have sinned. 00:00:48.84\00:00:52.64 Even though humanity are the ones that should receive the 00:00:52.67\00:00:55.93 consequences of sin, which is death, God has stepped in. 00:00:55.96\00:00:59.18 He has bridged that gulf. 00:00:59.22\00:01:00.40 He is the One that is taken the consequences of our 00:01:00.44\00:01:03.06 sins upon Himself. 00:01:03.10\00:01:04.63 And so Paul introduces Chapter 2 by basically saying, 00:01:04.66\00:01:07.46 there is it just recompense for disobedience I want to show 00:01:07.50\00:01:10.31 you the plan of salvation. 00:01:10.34\00:01:11.31 I'm going to show you what has happened here. 00:01:11.35\00:01:13.30 God created us this way, but now we don't see this, 00:01:13.34\00:01:16.51 what do we see before we get to seeing what the 00:01:16.55\00:01:19.69 consequences are for us, we see Jesus. 00:01:19.72\00:01:22.04 Praise God, we see Jesus, Jesus steps in and takes upon 00:01:22.07\00:01:26.22 Himself those consequences for all of us. 00:01:26.26\00:01:28.96 Not just for a few not just for the believers, 00:01:29.00\00:01:31.40 but for all Hebrews Chapter 2 verse 9 tells us. 00:01:31.44\00:01:34.46 I love what James, said that in Jesus Christ, mercy 00:01:34.49\00:01:37.48 triumphs over justice. 00:01:37.52\00:01:38.68 Mercy doesn't cancel out justice. 00:01:38.71\00:01:41.61 Your talking about the book of James, not me. 00:01:41.65\00:01:43.02 Yeah, the book of James, cause I would say that too. 00:01:43.06\00:01:46.86 mercy triumphs over, it doesn't cancel it out 00:01:46.90\00:01:49.87 God is just always has been always will be. 00:01:49.91\00:01:53.52 Justice is a reality of the character of God. 00:01:53.56\00:01:57.13 It is not something that God fabricates. 00:01:57.17\00:01:59.40 It is not something God imposes so much, as it is what 00:01:59.44\00:02:03.45 God is at heart in character, there is a reality of 00:02:03.48\00:02:07.46 justice, and there is refuge in Jesus Christ. 00:02:07.49\00:02:10.75 There is an escape from the consequences of sin, 00:02:10.78\00:02:13.97 through Jesus Christ and that is what Paul is bringing 00:02:14.00\00:02:17.17 to our attention there. 00:02:17.21\00:02:18.18 And God's reality of justice, not because God is loving and 00:02:18.19\00:02:20.99 just, merciful and just, God is a reality 00:02:21.02\00:02:24.37 of justice because God is love and love is a justice as 00:02:24.41\00:02:28.71 reality of love, justice is part of love. 00:02:28.75\00:02:32.15 Not at odds with love I love that that is so powerful. 00:02:32.18\00:02:34.76 So Paul goes into this. 00:02:34.79\00:02:36.88 I guess we could refer to it as the rationale 00:02:36.92\00:02:40.50 or the logic of the gospel in his argument here. 00:02:40.53\00:02:43.65 There are two vital events that are connected together 00:02:43.68\00:02:48.72 and they are the incarnation and the cross, 00:02:48.76\00:02:51.93 or the death of Jesus Christ. 00:02:51.97\00:02:54.02 The incarnation, according to Paul's reasoning here, is 00:02:54.06\00:02:57.35 the necessary prerequisite or the necessary set of 00:02:57.39\00:03:01.75 circumstances that God must enter-into in order for 00:03:01.78\00:03:05.76 the cross to be rendered an authentic revelation of 00:03:05.79\00:03:08.89 His love and authentic sacrifice, because think about 00:03:08.93\00:03:12.96 this James, what if we were to imagine that God came to 00:03:12.99\00:03:16.98 earth retaining all of His divine attributes and 00:03:17.02\00:03:21.18 advantages, and then went through His experience in 00:03:21.21\00:03:25.34 Gethsemane and across cried out my God my God, 00:03:25.38\00:03:28.39 why have you forsaken Me. 00:03:28.43\00:03:29.53 But in that declaration omniscience for example, 00:03:29.57\00:03:34.55 would have transcended the experience omnipresence. 00:03:34.58\00:03:38.04 I mean, He would have been at the cross experiencing 00:03:38.08\00:03:41.50 what ever we are witnessing simultaneously. 00:03:41.54\00:03:43.52 If omnipresence was retained He would is simultaneously 00:03:43.56\00:03:47.26 with the Father in heaven. 00:03:47.29\00:03:48.86 And there is a sense in which it would be as charade. 00:03:48.90\00:03:51.79 It would be play acting but the incarnation makes it real. 00:03:51.83\00:03:54.68 It makes an authentic God stepped down. 00:03:54.72\00:03:58.03 He really truly took humanity on Himself and in doing so 00:03:58.06\00:04:02.66 could experience suffering and death. 00:04:02.69\00:04:05.56 Yes, and we see this in Philippians Chapter 2, 00:04:05.59\00:04:08.03 I mean in Philippians 2 beginning with verse 5, 00:04:08.07\00:04:10.44 God again, gives us through the Apostle Paul, a clear picture 00:04:10.47\00:04:15.39 of what has happened in the incarnation of Jesus Christ, 00:04:15.42\00:04:18.37 beginning with that incarnation and then leading us 00:04:18.40\00:04:21.69 to the cross. 00:04:21.73\00:04:22.70 Philippians Chapter 2 is powerful "Let this mind 00:04:22.73\00:04:25.50 be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus", verse 5, 00:04:25.53\00:04:29.44 "who being in the form of God did not consider it robbery. " 00:04:29.48\00:04:34.29 Or something to be held onto, "to be equal with God but made 00:04:34.32\00:04:39.09 himself of no reputation," 00:04:39.13\00:04:40.32 or, as another verse says, "made Himself," another version says 00:04:40.36\00:04:44.67 made Himself nothing, "taken upon Him. 00:04:44.71\00:04:47.71 the form of a servant, and being found in the likeness. 00:04:47.75\00:04:51.97 the likeness of men, humbled himself and became obedient 00:04:52.00\00:04:55.29 unto death, even the death of the cross," so again there's a 00:04:55.32\00:04:58.60 connection there the incarnation necessary in order for the 00:04:58.64\00:05:01.89 cross to be experienced. 00:05:01.92\00:05:03.06 And that is what Paul is bringing out here in Hebrews 2. 00:05:03.10\00:05:06.63 Paul is basically telling us in verses 9 and onward that 00:05:06.66\00:05:10.15 it was vital for Jesus to become one with us. 00:05:10.19\00:05:12.47 Look at verse 11, for example, both he who sanctifies and those 00:05:12.50\00:05:16.18 who are being sanctified are all of one for which cause 00:05:16.22\00:05:19.50 He is not ashamed to call them brethren. " 00:05:19.53\00:05:21.14 If you look at this and summarize this you realize that 00:05:21.18\00:05:24.86 Christ became one with those He sanctified, Hebrews 2 verse 11. 00:05:24.90\00:05:28.54 He is not ashamed to call us brethren, in verse 14. 00:05:28.58\00:05:31.68 He also likewise partakes of the same flesh and blood as 00:05:31.71\00:05:35.40 humanity, and verse 16, "he took of himself on himself the seed 00:05:35.44\00:05:39.22 of Abraham. " 00:05:39.26\00:05:40.23 A vital connection here so that we can understand He did 00:05:40.24\00:05:43.88 indeed become one with the human race. 00:05:43.92\00:05:45.45 Back in Philippians 2, James 00:05:45.48\00:05:47.30 I'm just recalling the Philips translation, which does 00:05:47.34\00:05:51.01 a really good job on this particular section, where as in 00:05:51.04\00:05:54.90 the King James version, New King James Version it says, 00:05:54.94\00:05:58.65 made himself of no reputation, and in the New International 00:05:58.69\00:06:02.36 Version it says, "made himself nothing,", well. 00:06:02.40\00:06:05.67 The Philips translation says that He laid aside His 00:06:05.70\00:06:08.94 divine prerogatives or advantages. 00:06:08.97\00:06:11.88 And so you have to wonder, what are the divine 00:06:11.92\00:06:14.38 prerogatives and advantages what are those abilities. 00:06:14.42\00:06:18.67 What are those powers, prerogatives that are unique to 00:06:18.70\00:06:22.83 the Divinity that humanity does not itself experience 00:06:22.87\00:06:26.93 In any way, and we learn in Scripture that there are three. 00:06:26.96\00:06:30.45 what we call the three Omnis, God is omnipresent. 00:06:30.49\00:06:35.46 God is omnipotent God is omniscient, which means God is 00:06:35.50\00:06:40.88 all present, all knowing, or all-powerful or all knowing. 00:06:40.92\00:06:44.89 It is really interesting when you trace the life of Jesus, 00:06:44.92\00:06:48.63 there are comments in the Gospels that touch on every one 00:06:48.66\00:06:52.33 of these, for example, 00:06:52.36\00:06:53.33 with regards to omniscience, Luke's Gospel says that the 00:06:53.34\00:06:57.44 child grew in knowledge and wisdom. 00:06:57.47\00:07:00.83 So He was learning things, He was going 00:07:00.87\00:07:02.53 through a learning process. 00:07:02.57\00:07:03.64 He was omniscient, He even said at one point in the Gospel 00:07:03.67\00:07:07.79 of Matthew, He said no man knows the day or the hour of the 00:07:07.83\00:07:11.88 coming of the Son of Man. 00:07:11.92\00:07:13.06 His second coming, not even myself, but the Father only got 00:07:13.09\00:07:15.52 God is omniscience in that sense, He emptied Himself. 00:07:15.56\00:07:18.29 That's another version, He emptied Himself. 00:07:18.32\00:07:19.76 Yes regardless and regarding omnipotence, he said in the 00:07:19.79\00:07:23.67 Gospel of John, "I can't of my own self do nothing. " 00:07:23.71\00:07:27.55 Nothing, Absolutely nothing. 00:07:27.59\00:07:29.01 Everything that we witness at what we recognize or witnessing 00:07:29.04\00:07:33.30 in Jesus, is we're witnessing the Father's 00:07:33.34\00:07:36.60 omnipotence, working through Him as a human being 00:07:36.64\00:07:40.38 at the Father's power. 00:07:40.42\00:07:41.39 He when we come to the cross, James, 00:07:41.41\00:07:45.73 Oh here's another one Ty. 00:07:45.77\00:07:47.10 When Jesus was leaving the disciples, He said I've got to 00:07:47.14\00:07:49.68 leave so I can send the Holy Spirit because I can't be with 00:07:49.71\00:07:52.22 you everywhere at one time. 00:07:52.26\00:07:54.44 I've confined Myself to My human body Omnipresence laid aside. 00:07:54.48\00:07:58.17 He laid aside His divine prerogatives for our salvation, 00:07:58.20\00:08:02.45 and this is amazing because it communicates to us that the 00:08:02.48\00:08:06.69 sacrifice that God made to save us James, was real. 00:08:06.72\00:08:10.04 It was authentic, this was not play acting, 00:08:10.07\00:08:13.10 He literally really truly did not consider equality with 00:08:13.14\00:08:16.92 God something to be grasped and held onto, but laid it aside, 00:08:16.96\00:08:20.19 condescended, took our human experience and 00:08:20.22\00:08:23.13 nature upon Himself, and then pass through human life, 00:08:23.17\00:08:27.27 all the way to the cross and experienced a real sacrifice. 00:08:27.31\00:08:31.38 Why did He do this is says the Philippians Chapter 2, 00:08:31.42\00:08:33.91 He did this so He can aid as He did so He can help us. 00:08:33.94\00:08:37.18 Jesus didn't come just to die for us, just to die for us, 00:08:37.22\00:08:40.42 He came to do more than just die for us. 00:08:40.46\00:08:42.67 He came to change our lives, enabling us to be helped 00:08:42.71\00:08:48.22 by Him, because He was not omnipotent. 00:08:48.25\00:08:50.10 He was not omniscience, He was not omnipresence. 00:08:50.14\00:08:52.63 In other words, He did not rely on to all these innate powers 00:08:52.67\00:08:55.97 that divinity has, He emptied Himself of those powers 00:08:56.00\00:08:58.40 and laid aside His divinity, if you will, cloaked with 00:08:58.44\00:09:00.80 humanity and became like us. 00:09:00.84\00:09:02.10 He relied upon God, we can rely upon God. 00:09:02.14\00:09:04.65 Now, we want to hasten to add and to clarify that 00:09:04.69\00:09:08.84 when laying aside His divine attributes and His divine 00:09:08.87\00:09:13.86 prerogatives, we are not saying and the Scriptures are not 00:09:13.90\00:09:17.02 saying that He ceased to be God. 00:09:17.05\00:09:18.94 Good point will we are seeing in Jesus. 00:09:18.98\00:09:21.76 Is He is 100% God, that's clear in Chapter 1 of Hebrews, 00:09:21.80\00:09:25.59 But He became 100% humanity that is the mystery of 00:09:25.62\00:09:29.52 Godliness, that is what makes what makes His incarnation 00:09:29.56\00:09:32.46 a mystery that we cannot fully phantom or understand. 00:09:32.50\00:09:35.80 He retained the divine character for sure, while laying 00:09:35.84\00:09:38.77 aside the attributes but we also want to hasten to add 00:09:38.81\00:09:41.71 that just because that is a mystery. 00:09:41.74\00:09:43.40 There is no mystery in understanding He did indeed 00:09:43.44\00:09:46.03 become human. 00:09:46.07\00:09:47.04 He did indeed become flesh and blood. 00:09:47.05\00:09:48.61 He can indeed aide us or help us He is one with those brethren. 00:09:48.64\00:09:53.54 One with us and humanity. 00:09:53.57\00:09:54.78 that is the next point we really want to make James, 00:09:54.82\00:09:56.95 is that when we are looking at Hebrews 2 and we encounter 00:09:56.99\00:10:00.16 the incarnation we come to the conclusion of the book. 00:10:00.19\00:10:04.45 Paul's logic is to say to us okay, God became human, 00:10:04.49\00:10:07.98 so that He could experience death authentically really 00:10:08.02\00:10:11.44 truly make the self-sacrifice and also this sacrifice was made 00:10:11.48\00:10:16.53 This condensation into humanity was made so that a very clear 00:10:16.56\00:10:21.02 perception on the part of human beings, could be made of God 00:10:21.05\00:10:25.47 sympathy for us. 00:10:25.51\00:10:26.98 He is compassionate. 00:10:27.02\00:10:28.42 He is merciful toward us, and so we encountered that 00:10:28.45\00:10:32.62 mercy, and that compassion in the person of Jesus Christ. 00:10:32.66\00:10:35.63 And I love this too, because in the context of this is 00:10:35.67\00:10:39.57 says that He became partaker, verse 14 of Hebrews 2, of 00:10:39.61\00:10:43.44 flesh and blood, and He did this so that He might through death 00:10:43.48\00:10:48.18 destroy him that had the power of death. 00:10:48.22\00:10:50.48 That is the devil and deliver them who through fear of death 00:10:50.51\00:10:54.32 for all their lifetime subject to bondage. 00:10:54.35\00:10:56.87 There is here a very real reality of what Christ 00:10:56.90\00:11:01.47 accomplished for us because we are in our humanity. 00:11:01.50\00:11:06.04 We are afraid of death, we are afraid of the 00:11:06.07\00:11:08.06 consequences of death. 00:11:08.09\00:11:09.06 So Jesus went ahead and tasted that God an out-of-the-way 00:11:09.07\00:11:11.75 for us, and now offers us life. 00:11:11.78\00:11:13.35 And no doubt James, I don't know about you, actually I do know 00:11:13.38\00:11:17.75 about you, but the more I delve into and understand the Gospel, 00:11:17.79\00:11:22.12 and come to know and appreciate God in Christ. 00:11:22.16\00:11:25.89 I just have sensed over the years, the fear of 00:11:25.93\00:11:29.63 death and the bondage that we are in. 00:11:29.67\00:11:33.01 This fear of death and just shutting off, like unwanted 00:11:33.04\00:11:36.95 pounds, because we are definitely more and more 00:11:36.99\00:11:40.88 confidence that everything we see in Jesus brings us to a 00:11:40.92\00:11:45.28 point of resolve and ease and confidence that 00:11:45.32\00:11:48.01 God is on our side, He is here to help us. 00:11:48.05\00:11:50.71 He is infinitely merciful. 00:11:50.74\00:11:52.31 God loves us with a love that knows no bounds, and it 00:11:52.35\00:11:55.89 is proved beyond all shadow can justly satisfy sin because He 00:12:03.18\00:12:08.22 has become a part of the corporate humanity. 00:12:08.26\00:12:09.83 Humanity is the one who should receive the consequences for sin 00:12:09.86\00:12:13.16 God has done that and became human and He can rightly do it 00:12:13.20\00:12:16.46 because He is God. 00:12:16.50\00:12:17.47 He is the only one that can actually satisfy the
