Welcome friends. 00:00:21.62\00:00:22.73 I'm so glad you joined us for Books of the Book, 00:00:22.76\00:00:25.60 which is the program that explores the Bible book by book. 00:00:25.63\00:00:30.53 Just as the word of God reads. 00:00:30.56\00:00:32.29 We are in the study of the book of Hebrews James. 00:00:32.32\00:00:35.11 We have already had two sessions in this 00:00:35.14\00:00:37.46 series of programs. 00:00:37.49\00:00:38.54 We've had an overview of the book of Hebrews. 00:00:38.57\00:00:40.82 Kind of a flyby overview and then we looked at Chapter 1 00:00:40.85\00:00:45.64 of the book of Hebrews and now we have come to Chapter 2. 00:00:45.67\00:00:48.69 So we want to invite our friends to grab a Bible and 00:00:48.72\00:00:52.32 pull up to the television set there, or if you are listening 00:00:52.35\00:00:56.32 by radio get a Bible and follow along as we move through 00:00:56.35\00:00:59.71 Hebrews Chapter 2. 00:00:59.74\00:01:01.28 Hebrews 2 is where we are picking up because 00:01:01.31\00:01:03.81 we left off here. 00:01:03.84\00:01:04.81 We finished Hebrews, Chapter 1, and were moving into 00:01:04.82\00:01:07.35 Hebrews, Chapter 2. 00:01:07.38\00:01:08.35 We are going to start with verse 1 of Hebrews 2. 00:01:08.36\00:01:10.35 "Therefore we ought to give more earnest heed to the 00:01:10.38\00:01:14.15 things that we have heard lest any time, we should let 00:01:14.18\00:01:18.14 them slip," or drift a way. 00:01:18.17\00:01:20.55 This is beautiful, really this verse, because God is 00:01:20.58\00:01:23.30 drawing our minds again to that relationship, 00:01:23.33\00:01:26.30 theme, don't drift from me. 00:01:26.33\00:01:28.40 Don't let me slip away from You, but He is doing it 00:01:28.43\00:01:29.83 in a relationship to the Word. 00:01:29.86\00:01:31.19 The reason that Chapter 2 begins with the word 00:01:31.22\00:01:34.39 "therefore", is because it is referring back to what 00:01:34.42\00:01:37.89 Paul has just developed in Chapter 1. 00:01:37.92\00:01:40.60 In Chapter 1, he has introduced us to God supreme 00:01:40.63\00:01:44.97 revelation of Himself, in the person of Jesus Christ. 00:01:45.00\00:01:48.72 Paul has informed us that this individual that we are 00:01:48.75\00:01:51.96 dealing with in Christ is none other than the Creator 00:01:51.99\00:01:55.98 of the Universe who, buy Himself has purged our sins. 00:01:56.01\00:01:59.40 He is none other than God, Lord and the Maker of 00:01:59.43\00:02:03.76 heaven and earth down in the latter verses of Chapter 1. 00:02:03.79\00:02:07.24 So, then Paul in Chapter 2, says, "Therefore, we must 00:02:07.27\00:02:11.23 give earnest heed to these things. " 00:02:11.26\00:02:13.10 In other words, Paul is communicating a tone of urgency 00:02:13.13\00:02:16.93 here, he is saying God has done everything He can do. 00:02:16.96\00:02:21.30 There is no further that God can go in self-sacrifice, 00:02:21.33\00:02:24.37 He has given all of heaven. 00:02:24.40\00:02:25.55 And this one gift of Himself in Jesus Christ. 00:02:25.58\00:02:28.63 So if we let this slip through our fingers. 00:02:28.66\00:02:31.12 If we somehow become hardened and insensitive to this 00:02:31.15\00:02:36.10 greatest of all gifts and manifestation of God's love. 00:02:36.13\00:02:39.49 There is nothing more that God can do to reach our hearts. 00:02:39.52\00:02:44.18 Absolutely, and also, I think one of the themes we are 00:02:44.21\00:02:46.98 picking up on here it, we are going to find flowing 00:02:47.01\00:02:49.38 through the book of Hebrews, a relationship theme that 00:02:49.41\00:02:52.40 He is building on is God has always opened, had an open door 00:02:52.43\00:02:56.89 of communication to us. 00:02:56.92\00:02:58.33 He has always committed to us, even from the inception 00:02:58.36\00:03:01.13 of sin, He came looking for us through the prophets, 00:03:01.16\00:03:03.76 has communicated to us and in the last days. 00:03:03.79\00:03:05.71 His last effort, His last focus is to come personally, 00:03:05.74\00:03:09.99 in Human Flesh and connect with us relationally for 00:03:10.02\00:03:15.58 eternity, because Jesus Christ is going to bear human, 00:03:15.61\00:03:18.76 humanity for all eternity. 00:03:18.79\00:03:20.81 And what else can God do but that. 00:03:20.84\00:03:22.97 In other words, in relationship and seeking 00:03:23.00\00:03:24.67 to restore relationship. 00:03:24.70\00:03:25.82 How more can He manifest Himself? 00:03:25.85\00:03:28.61 So James, what we see here is that if we were to 00:03:28.64\00:03:31.20 summarize, Chapter 1, the author of Hebrews is saying, 00:03:31.23\00:03:34.67 Jesus is God. 00:03:34.70\00:03:36.52 If we are to summarize, Chapter 2 of Hebrews. 00:03:36.55\00:03:40.46 The author is saying, Jesus who is God, has become human. 00:03:40.49\00:03:46.16 And this is necessary in order to accomplish, to bring to 00:03:46.19\00:03:50.39 fruition and completion, the plan of salvation. 00:03:50.42\00:03:52.68 This book, the book of Hebrews is Paul's masterpiece of 00:03:52.71\00:03:57.50 Christian apologetics.. 00:03:57.53\00:03:58.58 Now Christian apologetics is defined as the purpose of 00:03:58.61\00:04:04.15 proving Christianity true. 00:04:04.18\00:04:05.64 And so Paul here is using every, he is pulling out all 00:04:05.67\00:04:10.41 the stops, he is using everything he can to help us to 00:04:10.44\00:04:12.98 see God in the correct light and the right light. 00:04:13.01\00:04:15.14 He is doing this by laying the foundation in 00:04:15.17\00:04:18.87 who Jesus Christ was. 00:04:18.90\00:04:19.94 Hebrews, in a sense, knew that Jesus was human, in fact 00:04:19.98\00:04:23.18 He was too human for them to believe that He was God. 00:04:23.21\00:04:25.14 Many of the Jews were ready to stone Jesus for claiming 00:04:25.17\00:04:29.12 to be one with the Father for claiming to be God. 00:04:29.15\00:04:31.39 They knew He was human, and so Paul takes this first 00:04:31.42\00:04:35.23 chapter, and just dedicates it to pulling the point home, 00:04:35.26\00:04:40.34 pushing the point home, that Jesus was God. 00:04:40.37\00:04:42.65 Now he goes back in a sense, to help us understand that 00:04:42.68\00:04:46.72 while He was God, He was also human. 00:04:46.75\00:04:48.60 This is vital for the Gospel. 00:04:48.63\00:04:50.44 This is the most incredible thing that's ever happened 00:04:50.47\00:04:54.02 in all of Universal history. 00:04:54.05\00:04:56.51 There is nothing that human minds can contemplate, 00:04:56.54\00:04:59.78 nothing we can study, nothing we can delve into, there's 00:04:59.81\00:05:03.21 no scientific pursuit, there is nothing that compares 00:05:03.24\00:05:07.30 with the reality of God the Creator of the universe, 00:05:07.33\00:05:12.01 condescending and infinite love and self-sacrifice to 00:05:12.04\00:05:16.39 become a member James, of His own creation of His own, 00:05:16.42\00:05:21.25 what He's made. 00:05:21.28\00:05:23.03 I mean, we are mere human beings, and God didn't remain 00:05:23.06\00:05:26.94 in a lofty separate position, God step down and became human. 00:05:26.97\00:05:32.48 Paul begins to open this up with verse 5 and onward in the 00:05:32.51\00:05:37.36 book of Hebrews. 00:05:37.39\00:05:38.40 He says there in verse 5, "for God has not put the world 00:05:38.43\00:05:43.68 to come, of which we speak in subjection to Angels, 00:05:43.71\00:05:48.23 but one has testified in a certain place," 00:05:48.26\00:05:51.16 he's speaking of David here. 00:05:51.19\00:05:52.78 "What is man that you are mindful of him or the 00:05:52.81\00:05:57.16 Son of Man, that you take care of Him. " 00:05:57.19\00:05:59.17 Here's the question that David urged in Psalms 00:05:59.20\00:06:02.42 Chapter 8,and Paul takes up here and repeats, 00:06:02.45\00:06:04.96 David is contemplating humanity. 00:06:04.99\00:06:08.99 Why are they so important? 00:06:09.02\00:06:10.30 What's the big deal? 00:06:10.33\00:06:11.33 What's so significant about human beings? 00:06:11.36\00:06:12.92 Why does God even care for us? 00:06:12.95\00:06:14.13 How vast the universe is, how large creation is, and 00:06:14.16\00:06:18.93 how tiny our planet is. 00:06:18.96\00:06:20.26 And we're little specks of, little specks of dust on 00:06:20.29\00:06:22.64 this planet and then you think of a Creator God, 00:06:22.67\00:06:24.73 who has created all of this. 00:06:24.76\00:06:25.96 So it's much bigger than all of it, the question comes home 00:06:25.99\00:06:29.01 to the mind, even the scientific mind, the question comes home, 00:06:29.04\00:06:31.51 What is man? 00:06:31.54\00:06:33.03 In comparison to all of this, and the answer that Paul 00:06:33.06\00:06:36.83 drives home is astounding, because he gives an answer 00:06:36.86\00:06:41.28 that elevates humanity in the scale of moral worth before 00:06:41.31\00:06:47.20 God on such an incredible scale, he says in verse 7, 00:06:47.23\00:06:50.86 "You," that is God, "you have made Him a little lower 00:06:50.89\00:06:55.49 than the angels and have crowned him with glory and 00:06:55.52\00:06:59.80 honor and set Him over the works of Your hands. " 00:06:59.83\00:07:03.00 It is very interesting, James, that in this text, 00:07:03.03\00:07:05.61 if you look at other versions, you look at 00:07:05.64\00:07:08.34 the actual Greek here. 00:07:08.37\00:07:09.48 And even in my margin, in my new King James version, it 00:07:09.51\00:07:12.41 explains here that there is another dimension to this 00:07:12.44\00:07:16.54 that Paul is bringing home. 00:07:16.57\00:07:17.98 That actually you don't even need the other translations 00:07:18.01\00:07:20.38 for, because the remainder of the chapter actually fills 00:07:20.41\00:07:23.35 out this picture. 00:07:23.38\00:07:24.35 The way that this verse reads really reads, "You have made Him 00:07:24.36\00:07:27.84 for a little while, lower than the angels. " 00:07:27.87\00:07:31.21 Then Paul's logic goes something like this, human beings 00:07:31.24\00:07:35.03 were made a little while lower than the angels 00:07:35.06\00:07:36.75 because, in the course of time, God was incarnate in 00:07:36.78\00:07:41.02 Christ Jesus became a human being, and then was elevated 00:07:41.05\00:07:45.57 to the right hand of the Father. 00:07:45.60\00:07:47.62 Humanity was, in fact, in Christ, taken in the very 00:07:47.65\00:07:51.91 heavens and seated at the right hand of the Father. 00:07:51.94\00:07:54.91 So Paul is kind of saying, now a part of the plan of 00:07:54.94\00:07:57.89 redemption, is that we as human beings would catch up 00:07:57.92\00:08:01.20 to our position in Christ. 00:08:01.23\00:08:03.67 That we would find our place in Jesus Christ, 00:08:03.70\00:08:07.07 at the right hand of the Father. 00:08:07.10\00:08:08.45 So God is not just restoring us God, God is not just bringing 00:08:08.48\00:08:11.21 us back to this ideally perfection that we had in the 00:08:11.24\00:08:14.77 garden of Eden, down on this earth. 00:08:14.80\00:08:15.86 He is taken as further than that. 00:08:15.89\00:08:17.93 He is actually elevating us, in that restoration, 00:08:17.96\00:08:20.35 to a place by Himself. 00:08:20.38\00:08:21.55 In other words, the plan of salvation the gospel of Jesus 00:08:21.58\00:08:24.80 Christ, involving God becoming a man, means that the 00:08:24.83\00:08:28.22 immortal, becomes mortal and takes upon Himself that 00:08:28.25\00:08:31.78 mortality that human flesh. 00:08:31.81\00:08:33.70 I should say dying in the human flesh, and then glorified 00:08:33.73\00:08:36.82 in that human flesh takes it to heaven and then there with Him 00:08:36.85\00:08:39.91 We sit, as He is the head of the human race, we sit with 00:08:39.94\00:08:43.44 Him on the right side of the Father for all eternity. 00:08:43.47\00:08:46.34 I mean, think about this, right now, as we are sitting 00:08:46.37\00:08:49.63 here having this Bible study, 00:08:49.66\00:08:51.24 right at this very moment, a literal 00:08:51.27\00:08:54.14 human being is seated in the throne room of the 00:08:54.17\00:08:59.13 universe with the Father. 00:08:59.16\00:09:00.32 A specimen of the human race, you could say, 00:09:00.35\00:09:04.11 in Jesus Christ has traversed the entire, 00:09:04.14\00:09:07.68 the entire gamut of redemption. 00:09:07.71\00:09:10.90 He has completely perfected humanity and 00:09:10.93\00:09:14.62 has ascended to the throne room of the universe. 00:09:14.65\00:09:17.29 There is a sense in which according to the 00:09:17.32\00:09:19.83 New Testament Gospel that Jesus is our 00:09:19.86\00:09:23.00 representative there. 00:09:23.03\00:09:24.39 I mean, I'm not there, literally, 00:09:24.42\00:09:26.67 you're not there literally. 00:09:26.70\00:09:27.67 That's why we said we are called upon by faith to 00:09:27.68\00:09:30.70 catch up to where Jesus is by faith. 00:09:30.73\00:09:33.36 The fact is, that in a representative set, as our 00:09:33.39\00:09:36.95 Savior, as a human being, our brother in the flesh. 00:09:36.98\00:09:39.17 Jesus after His incarnation, His death, His resurrection 00:09:39.20\00:09:42.90 and ascension retained our humanity. 00:09:42.93\00:09:46.86 Yes, I like these verses, because these verses in 00:09:46.89\00:09:49.65 Hebrew Chapter 2. 00:09:49.68\00:09:50.92 These verses 5 through 9, give us a set outline of 00:09:50.95\00:09:55.58 the whole plan of salvation. 00:09:55.61\00:09:56.61 We have the creation story right here. 00:09:56.64\00:09:58.78 We have the fact that God's put us on this earth and 00:09:58.81\00:10:02.59 placed everything under us. 00:10:02.62\00:10:04.36 We were given dominion of the whole planet in its 00:10:04.39\00:10:06.78 perfection, in its Edenic beauty. 00:10:06.81\00:10:08.74 Then it says in verse 8, when you put all things in 00:10:08.77\00:10:12.48 subjection under His feet... there was nothing that 00:10:12.51\00:10:16.57 was not put under Him. 00:10:16.60\00:10:18.53 There was nothing that was left out, of that subjection. 00:10:18.56\00:10:20.85 He has subjection of the animals, the earth, 00:10:20.88\00:10:22.84 everything was ours. 00:10:22.87\00:10:23.87 But now, the end of this verse says, verse eight, but now 00:10:23.90\00:10:27.24 we do not yet see all things put under Him. 00:10:27.27\00:10:30.89 That has taken us to the fall. 00:10:30.92\00:10:32.77 That is taken is to the truth of our deception by 00:10:32.80\00:10:38.03 Satan, by the serpent. 00:10:38.06\00:10:39.50 And the fact that we yield ourselves servants to obey. 00:10:39.53\00:10:42.42 We become those servants to whom we obey. 00:10:42.45\00:10:44.96 Romans Chapter 6 tells us. 00:10:44.99\00:10:46.65 And therefore now in obeying the serpent, believing the lie 00:10:46.68\00:10:50.80 in disobeying God and turning our allegiance from 00:10:50.83\00:10:53.25 God to the devil. 00:10:53.28\00:10:54.78 We have given dominion over this earth to the devil. 00:10:54.81\00:10:58.67 He has become the prince of this world that is 00:10:58.70\00:10:59.91 why we see evil. 00:10:59.94\00:11:01.33 That's why we see pain 00:11:01.44\00:11:02.41 That's what we see suffering. 00:11:02.42\00:11:03.39 That's where we see death. 00:11:03.40\00:11:04.37 That's why we see what we see on this planet. 00:11:04.38\00:11:06.38 It was never God's will. 00:11:06.41\00:11:07.65 His will is not being done here, in that context, but 00:11:07.68\00:11:11.01 verse 9 says, we see Jesus. 00:11:11.04\00:11:13.51 So there is a reversal of the effects of the fall. 00:11:13.54\00:11:17.75 I mean, the plan of salvation in a sense in this 00:11:17.78\00:11:21.92 particular context, is God coming into human experience 00:11:21.96\00:11:25.92 and reversing or you could say this way, that He is 00:11:25.95\00:11:29.88 going to carry forth His original plan for the 00:11:29.92\00:11:32.73 human race, as if human beings have never fallen. 00:11:32.77\00:11:35.52 Paul and in other words, He is not putting in a demoted 00:11:35.55\00:11:38.86 position, He's not consigning us to some remote planet 00:11:38.89\00:11:41.73 somewhere in the universe and saying, you know, you 00:11:41.76\00:11:44.56 should be just glad that I spared you. 00:11:44.59\00:11:46.50 He is going the extra mile to say the least He is not 00:11:46.54\00:11:49.68 only redeeming us. 00:11:49.72\00:11:51.31 But then He is taking us into His very closest, 00:11:51.34\00:11:55.43 intimate relationship. 00:11:55.46\00:11:56.71 Literally, according to this scripture, human beings 00:11:56.74\00:12:00.77 are to occupy a position, eventually, 00:12:00.81\00:12:03.85 in relationship with God, that is higher than the 00:12:03.88\00:12:06.45 angels who have never fallen into sin. 00:12:06.49\00:12:09.39 And that is why Paul uses here, for example, the little 00:12:09.43\00:12:12.38 word "yet" in verse 8. 00:12:12.41\00:12:13.74 We do not yet see all things in subjection to Him, 00:12:13.77\00:12:17.60 but verse 9, we do see Jesus. 00:12:17.64\00:12:19.99 Who, who was made a little lower than the angels why, 00:12:20.03\00:12:22.80 because that's where we were made, He became one with us. 00:12:22.83\00:12:26.09 What for, for the suffering of death that He by the grace 00:12:26.12\00:12:29.35 of God should taste death for everyone, for all. 00:12:29.38\00:12:31.87 Why though, why did He need to taste death? is God's wrath 00:12:31.90\00:12:36.97 need to be appeased, is God angry, No! 00:12:37.00\00:12:39.28 The context of this is really clear in Hebrews Chapter 2. 00:12:39.32\00:12:42.99 We see in verse two that the word that was spoken by angels 00:12:43.03\00:12:46.67 was steadfast and every transgression and disobedience 00:12:46.70\00:12:50.36 received a just recompense of reward. 00:12:50.39\00:12:52.64 How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? 00:12:52.68\00:12:55.30 In other words, God is just. 00:12:55.33\00:12:57.24 Does that mean He's not love? 00:12:57.27\00:12:59.11 Does that justice eclipse, His love? 00:12:59.14\00:13:02.30 Absolutely not, there is a common misconception, 00:13:02.34\00:13:06.06 in the world and in Christianity, that there is a 00:13:06.09\00:13:09.78 contradiction or a contrast. 00:13:09.82\00:13:12.28 That is irreconcilable between justice and mercy. 00:13:12.32\00:13:15.72 So people, sometimes James, you hear people place love and 00:13:15.75\00:13:20.30 justice as an opposite or intention with one another. 00:13:20.33\00:13:25.05 They say God is love. 00:13:25.08\00:13:26.51 But God is also just or God is just the God is also love, 00:13:26.54\00:13:30.34 but the truth is that God is love, and both justice and 00:13:30.38\00:13:34.14 mercy are two hemispheres of that same love. 00:13:34.18\00:13:37.33 God is just because God is love. 00:13:37.36\00:13:39.73 God is merciful, because God is love, justice is as much 00:13:39.77\00:13:44.53 dimension or an aspect of love as is mercy. 00:13:44.57\00:13:48.76 Mercy is just as much part of much of love as is justice 00:13:48.80\00:13:51.82 they are not polar opposites. 00:13:51.85\00:13:53.80 They are a paradoxical whole, in God's character. 00:13:53.84\00:13:57.25 That's what we see on the cross. 00:13:57.29\00:13:58.57 When we look at the cross we see mercy. 00:13:58.60\00:14:00.21 When we look across we see justice. 00:14:00.25\00:14:02.21 They come together and meet together, 00:14:02.25\00:14:03.34 they kiss each other. 00:14:03.37\00:14:04.77 Psalms 85 says in the cross and in Jesus Christ. 00:14:04.81\00:14:07.38 I love that verse. 00:14:07.41\00:14:08.38 I love that verse because there is an intimate element. 00:14:08.39\00:14:12.71 Why would God employ this word kiss? 00:14:12.74\00:14:15.98 God tells us through David, in Psalms 85, that at the 00:14:16.02\00:14:20.13 cross and in Jesus Christ. 00:14:20.16\00:14:21.52 Mercy and justice, truth, kiss each other. 00:14:21.56\00:14:27.15 They came together. 00:14:27.18\00:14:28.15 There was a beautiful blending of the two. 00:14:28.17\00:14:30.82 We are going to continue in our study of the 00:14:30.85\00:14:33.14 book of Hebrews, here in Chapter 2 James, 00:14:33.17\00:14:35.43 but we need to take a break. 00:14:35.46\00:14:36.43 So let's go ahead take our break and we'll come 00:14:36.47\00:14:38.32 back after the break. 00:14:38.36\00:14:39.36 Please join us as we continue our
