Hi friends and welcome back to our continuing study 00:00:01.98\00:00:03.20 Books Of the Book. 00:00:03.23\00:00:04.64 The book of Hebrews Chapter 1. 00:00:04.67\00:00:06.13 We are picking up where we left off, the theme 00:00:06.16\00:00:08.80 "Something Better". 00:00:08.83\00:00:09.96 It's incredible, James, that we have noted that Paul 00:00:09.99\00:00:13.19 makes this colossal declaration that Jesus Christ, 00:00:13.22\00:00:17.81 Who is God in the flesh, purged our sins by Himself. 00:00:17.84\00:00:24.39 That's right and what is this I mean, this is quite a 00:00:24.42\00:00:26.64 statement, what is it mean that He did this 00:00:26.67\00:00:27.96 all totally by Himself? 00:00:27.99\00:00:30.68 There is a lot of gospel here. 00:00:30.71\00:00:32.23 Paul is leaping right into it. 00:00:32.26\00:00:33.66 What he is basically saying, the word purged means 00:00:33.69\00:00:36.46 to cleanse or to do. 00:00:36.49\00:00:37.96 It is very similar to the terminology that Paul uses 00:00:37.99\00:00:41.20 in Ephesians 5, were he talks about washing with water. 00:00:41.23\00:00:45.79 It kind of like washing clothes. 00:00:45.82\00:00:47.67 Apparently there is a lot of gospel in doing laundry. 00:00:47.70\00:00:51.01 He did them, we were dirty, we were sinful, 00:00:51.04\00:00:55.52 and He cleansed us. 00:00:55.55\00:00:56.69 But the point I think that you are directing us to 00:00:56.72\00:00:59.65 here "by Himself" in other words, we didn't do it. 00:00:59.68\00:01:02.42 We didn't help Him, we didn't. add to this salvation, 00:01:02.45\00:01:05.99 it's a gift from God, He did it by Himself. 00:01:06.02\00:01:08.43 He's the only one that could do it, 00:01:08.46\00:01:10.15 angels couldn't do it. 00:01:10.18\00:01:11.15 Man couldn't do it. 00:01:11.16\00:01:12.37 God had to do it. 00:01:12.40\00:01:13.39 Therefore, it is paramount that Paul establishes Christ 00:01:13.42\00:01:18.91 as God, before he establishes Him as a man. 00:01:18.94\00:01:21.89 This is such an important point, it distinguishes the 00:01:21.92\00:01:25.18 biblical revelation of God from all pagan religions, 00:01:25.21\00:01:30.13 from all of the various religions in the world, 00:01:30.16\00:01:33.03 because the God that we encounter in Scripture is 00:01:33.06\00:01:36.37 making a self-sacrifice for our salvation. 00:01:36.40\00:01:41.07 So Paul says, please understand that Jesus 00:01:41.10\00:01:45.03 is better than angels. 00:01:45.06\00:01:47.06 I mean, just imagine for one moment, what if 00:01:47.09\00:01:50.06 hypothetically, God were to say, the human race has sinned. 00:01:50.09\00:01:53.86 I need to venture on a salvation plan. 00:01:53.89\00:01:57.84 So I'm going to sacrifice an angel, or 10 angels, 00:01:57.87\00:02:02.18 or all angels. 00:02:02.21\00:02:04.06 I think the Angels would volunteer! 00:02:04.09\00:02:05.44 Yeah, and I mean their selfless in their own natures, 00:02:05.47\00:02:08.72 you know their governed by Gods love. 00:02:08.75\00:02:10.83 But think about this, if God were to give all the 00:02:10.86\00:02:12.88 angels of heaven as a sacrifice for our sin, God would have 00:02:12.91\00:02:16.76 come short of giving Himself for our sins. 00:02:16.79\00:02:20.62 It wouldn't work. 00:02:20.65\00:02:21.62 The only way that humanity could be saved is for 00:02:21.63\00:02:25.50 us to encounter God displaying His love for us, 00:02:25.53\00:02:30.65 In giving His life for our sins. 00:02:30.68\00:02:32.84 That's all that will turn our hearts back to Him 00:02:32.87\00:02:35.16 away from rebellion. 00:02:35.19\00:02:36.96 That is the point on a relational level. 00:02:36.99\00:02:38.20 The point is, it is God that is doing this. 00:02:38.23\00:02:41.17 Another point that is really important is in relationship 00:02:41.20\00:02:44.44 to this, God is the only One who actually can do it, 00:02:44.47\00:02:47.43 because the satisfaction for sin is death. 00:02:47.46\00:02:50.68 Consequence of sin is death. 00:02:50.71\00:02:52.18 In some way, we will see here more fully developed, 00:02:52.21\00:02:55.79 God is the only One, love is the only thing that 00:02:55.82\00:02:58.18 can survive that consequence. 00:02:58.21\00:03:00.40 That can take that penalty upon itself. 00:03:00.43\00:03:02.83 The person who could do that and survive the 00:03:02.86\00:03:05.39 consequence of that. 00:03:05.42\00:03:06.46 Yeah, pass right through death, gain victory over it and 00:03:06.49\00:03:09.57 emerge in resurrection life to give that resurrection 00:03:09.60\00:03:13.21 life, by virtue of His love to us. 00:03:13.24\00:03:15.62 Pure, unadulterated holy love, cannot be held 00:03:15.65\00:03:18.91 captive by death. 00:03:18.94\00:03:20.64 James, we mentioned briefly this idea of the biblical 00:03:20.67\00:03:26.73 revelation of God being distinct from all other 00:03:26.76\00:03:29.32 religious ideas in history. 00:03:29.35\00:03:30.96 There is a three party view of the atonement, 00:03:30.99\00:03:34.62 what happened at the cross. 00:03:34.65\00:03:35.65 And the two party view of what happened at the cross. 00:03:35.68\00:03:38.74 The three party view is common to all religions, and 00:03:38.77\00:03:41.72 it simply says that at the cross we encountered three 00:03:41.75\00:03:44.16 parties, God, who is the offended party. 00:03:44.19\00:03:46.75 Then we encounter the sinner, who one who has done 00:03:46.78\00:03:49.45 the offending, and then we encounter a third-party 00:03:49.48\00:03:52.18 sacrifice that God vents His wrath on 00:03:52.21\00:03:56.75 or makes a sacrifice. 00:03:56.78\00:03:57.94 Okay, that is one view, the other view says, No! 00:03:57.97\00:04:01.05 What we actually encounter at the cross is a two party, 00:04:01.08\00:04:05.56 atonement and that is God and the sinner and the One 00:04:05.59\00:04:10.79 who is making the sacrifice. 00:04:10.82\00:04:11.90 The one hanging on the cross is not a third-party 00:04:11.93\00:04:14.09 sacrifice, but none other than God Himself. 00:04:14.12\00:04:16.92 Absolutely! 00:04:16.95\00:04:17.92 Making the sacrifice. 00:04:17.93\00:04:18.90 And that distinguishes Christianity from all 00:04:18.91\00:04:20.67 other religions friends. 00:04:20.70\00:04:21.74 That makes Christianity what it is the good news 00:04:21.77\00:04:25.04 about who God is. 00:04:25.07\00:04:26.60 God is not one who requires sacrifice, like other pagan 00:04:26.63\00:04:30.64 deities, from us or from some third-party. 00:04:30.67\00:04:32.98 God is the One who Himself, gives sacrifice. 00:04:33.01\00:04:35.06 In other words God takes the responsibility for our sin. 00:04:35.09\00:04:38.60 God is the One that purges our sins by Himself. 00:04:38.63\00:04:41.76 God is the One that makes the sacrifice. 00:04:41.79\00:04:43.95 This is a picture in Hebrews 1 of a better God. 00:04:43.98\00:04:46.71 Another part of Paul's logic here, that is just really 00:04:46.74\00:04:49.56 powerful, it said in these first four verses, 00:04:49.59\00:04:52.57 the apostle Paul draws a direct link between 00:04:52.60\00:04:57.07 creation and salvation. 00:04:57.10\00:04:59.23 In other words, the only one who could save us 00:04:59.26\00:05:03.91 is the Creator, because there is a sense in which, 00:05:03.94\00:05:06.92 James, that salvation is an act of re-creation. 00:05:06.95\00:05:12.84 I mean think about this, in Psalms 51, yes, in Psalms 51. 00:05:12.87\00:05:18.70 I was thinking that David sins, he said, with Bathsheba, 00:05:18.73\00:05:22.49 he committed the act of murder in order to take this 00:05:22.52\00:05:25.78 woman into an adulterous affair. 00:05:25.81\00:05:27.75 He was conscious-smitten and David comes to the Lord, 00:05:27.78\00:05:31.33 in Psalms 51, and he prays a prayer of repentance. 00:05:31.36\00:05:35.28 It is very interesting in this prayer of repentance, 00:05:35.31\00:05:37.23 how he marries together creation language 00:05:37.26\00:05:40.07 and salvation language. 00:05:40.10\00:05:41.60 He says "create in me a clean heart Oh God, and renew a 00:05:41.63\00:05:46.14 right spirit within me", that's verse 10. 00:05:46.17\00:05:47.87 And then in verse 12, he says, "restore unto me the 00:05:47.90\00:05:51.04 joy of your salvation. " 00:05:51.19\00:05:52.57 So in one breath he says, God create me a new God save me. 00:05:52.60\00:05:58.03 Creation and salvation are accomplished 00:05:58.06\00:06:00.63 by the same power. 00:06:00.66\00:06:01.63 1 Corinthians 5:17, "if anyone is in Christ, 00:06:01.64\00:06:03.98 he is a new creation is a new creature in Jesus Christ. " 00:06:04.01\00:06:07.10 My absolute favorite creation redemption verse, James, 00:06:07.13\00:06:10.47 is in Ephesians Chapter 2, where we are told, 00:06:10.50\00:06:14.23 in verse 8, "for by grace you have been saved 00:06:14.26\00:06:17.00 through faith and that not of yourselves, it is the 00:06:17.03\00:06:19.58 gift of God, not of works lest any man should boast. " 00:06:19.62\00:06:22.52 And then verse 10, "for we are his workmanship. " 00:06:22.55\00:06:26.28 Created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God has 00:06:26.31\00:06:30.53 for-ordained that we should walk in them. 00:06:30.56\00:06:32.47 Very clearly, Paul says verse 8, we are saved by grace. 00:06:32.50\00:06:35.97 Verse 10, how are we saved, God created humanity all 00:06:36.00\00:06:40.51 over again in His image in the person of Jesus Christ. 00:06:40.54\00:06:43.76 So he invites us to enter into that whole new humanity. 00:06:43.79\00:06:47.40 This is why it is vital and Paul picks up this theme very 00:06:47.43\00:06:50.48 clearly in Chapter 1 is vital for us to understand that 00:06:50.51\00:06:53.83 Jesus Christ is God. 00:06:53.86\00:06:54.97 Now, I just want to give an outline of this Ty, 00:06:55.00\00:06:57.26 for viewers and our listeners. 00:06:57.29\00:06:58.62 In Hebrews Chapter 1 verse 2, Jesus is the One who 00:06:58.65\00:07:02.51 made the worlds. 00:07:02.54\00:07:03.74 In Hebrews Chapter 1, verse 3, Jesus is the 00:07:03.77\00:07:06.23 brightness of God's glory, the express image of His 00:07:06.26\00:07:08.68 Person and He upholds all things by the word of His power. 00:07:08.71\00:07:11.44 In Hebrews Chapter 1, verse 4, He is made much better 00:07:11.47\00:07:14.89 there is our theme again, than the angels. 00:07:14.92\00:07:16.69 In Hebrews 1 verse 5, Jesus is the Son of God. 00:07:16.72\00:07:19.50 In Hebrews 1: 6, let the angels worship Jesus. 00:07:19.53\00:07:22.34 In Hebrews 1:8, God calls Jesus God, 00:07:22.37\00:07:25.45 the Father calls Jesus, God. 00:07:25.48\00:07:27.74 In Hebrews 1 verse 10, God calls Lord and Maker 00:07:27.77\00:07:31.24 of heaven and earth. 00:07:31.27\00:07:32.24 In Hebrews 1 versus 11 and 12 God describes 00:07:32.25\00:07:34.66 Jesus as eternal. 00:07:34.69\00:07:35.96 And in verse 13, God calls Jesus, to sit down at 00:07:35.99\00:07:39.05 His right hand were no angel, at any time can sit. 00:07:39.08\00:07:41.60 Yeah, it is just amazing to think about this James. 00:07:41.63\00:07:44.79 We have here in Hebrews 1. 00:07:44.82\00:07:46.57 You can see it in the quote marks, in most versions, 00:07:46.60\00:07:49.73 that the Father is addressing Jesus. 00:07:49.76\00:07:53.84 And the Father says to Jesus, You are God. 00:07:53.87\00:07:58.79 You are the Creator of heaven and earth. 00:07:58.82\00:08:01.22 The father says you are the Lord of heaven and earth 00:08:01.25\00:08:04.25 and the Father says to all the angelic host, 00:08:04.28\00:08:06.83 bow down and worship Jesus. 00:08:06.86\00:08:10.41 This is God, Jesus is none other than God in the flesh. 00:08:10.44\00:08:14.96 And so this truth comes home to the heart now. 00:08:14.99\00:08:17.82 This is where it is amazing. 00:08:17.85\00:08:19.67 In fact, there was a hymn written 00:08:19.70\00:08:23.21 by Charles Wesley and it was called, "Can It Be?" 00:08:23.24\00:08:26.23 This was the name of the hymn and in this hymn 00:08:26.26\00:08:28.28 there are a couple of lines in the go like this "amazing love, 00:08:28.31\00:08:31.62 how can it be, that thou my God should die for me?" 00:08:31.65\00:08:37.01 Wow! that's powerful, as my daughter Leah would say it's 00:08:37.04\00:08:40.12 Fantabulous! 00:08:40.15\00:08:42.56 Good, good Leah, that's great. 00:08:42.59\00:08:44.23 But some have been afraid of such a thought. 00:08:44.26\00:08:46.45 The idea that God can die. 00:08:46.48\00:08:50.45 I mean, it's not really in the biblical, the Bible 00:08:50.48\00:08:53.02 there is no verse actually says that God died. 00:08:53.05\00:08:55.63 How do we understand that God can die for me? 00:08:55.66\00:09:00.01 How can we understand that God died? 00:09:00.04\00:09:01.60 This is what Paul picks up as we move into 00:09:01.63\00:09:04.23 Hebrews Chapter 2. 00:09:04.26\00:09:05.79 How is it that God becomes mortal and is able to 00:09:05.82\00:09:09.72 to die for the sins of the world? 00:09:09.75\00:09:10.73 This is the rational, and the logic for the incarnation. 00:09:10.76\00:09:14.60 I mean, we began with the premise that the person we're 00:09:14.63\00:09:18.78 dealing with in Jesus Christ is none other than the God 00:09:18.81\00:09:21.48 of the Universe, the Creator of the second member 00:09:21.51\00:09:23.64 of the triune Godhead. 00:09:23.67\00:09:25.54 Because were trying to prove that because 00:09:25.57\00:09:28.12 He's become a man, He still is God, He still remains God. 00:09:28.15\00:09:30.51 Yeah, Paul moves us through this idea, he established in 00:09:30.54\00:09:34.72 Chapter 1, Jesus is God. 00:09:34.75\00:09:37.01 And then we're left with the question, Wait a minute, 00:09:37.04\00:09:39.40 wait a minute, you mean this person that we are dealing 00:09:39.43\00:09:42.38 with, this human were dealing with is God. 00:09:42.41\00:09:45.49 And Paul says exactly, that's the point. 00:09:45.52\00:09:47.94 The only way that this plan of salvation could work, 00:09:47.97\00:09:51.76 the only way God can pull this off, would be to step 00:09:51.79\00:09:54.68 from His position as the God of the universe and 00:09:54.71\00:09:58.84 condescend into our humanity so that He could experience 00:09:58.87\00:10:02.89 our temptations and resist them, and finally resist 00:10:02.92\00:10:06.40 to the point of death. 00:10:06.43\00:10:07.97 Absolutely, because in other words, 00:10:08.00\00:10:09.91 God has to become mortal. 00:10:09.94\00:10:11.25 Somehow He has to divest Himself of His immortality. 00:10:11.28\00:10:15.50 And I want to say the divest in the sense of allow 00:10:15.53\00:10:18.54 that to be enshrouded with mortality. 00:10:18.57\00:10:20.52 Allow that to be hidden in the mortal human body that 00:10:20.55\00:10:23.15 is subject to death in order for Him to justly take the 00:10:23.18\00:10:26.56 consequences of our sins. 00:10:26.59\00:10:27.97 He has to do that in the form, not of an angel, 00:10:28.00\00:10:30.21 but some other created being, He has to become 00:10:30.24\00:10:31.91 part of the corporate body of humanity. 00:10:31.94\00:10:34.59 Here's the thing, when we are encountering Jesus, 00:10:34.62\00:10:37.45 we are encountering, as we said earlier, a revelation, 00:10:37.48\00:10:41.28 not only of Jesus as God but of the 00:10:41.31\00:10:44.12 father's heart as well. 00:10:44.15\00:10:45.35 When Jesus came to this world, one of the most 00:10:45.38\00:10:47.66 incredible things He said was in 00:10:47.69\00:10:49.03 John Chapter 16. Verse 27. 00:10:49.06\00:10:51.93 When He said the Father Himself loves you. 00:10:51.96\00:10:56.75 A favorite author of ours has put forth a 00:10:56.78\00:11:00.67 hypothetical situation in order to drive this point home. 00:11:00.70\00:11:03.11 And this author says, hypothetically, "what if the 00:11:03.14\00:11:08.63 roles were reversed and the Father had been the one to 00:11:08.66\00:11:13.55 condescend into humanity in the incarnation?" 00:11:13.58\00:11:16.52 And what if it was the Father that took on human flesh, 00:11:16.55\00:11:20.66 and the question is asked by this author, she says, 00:11:20.69\00:11:24.45 "What will you, what would we have witnessed?" 00:11:24.48\00:11:26.91 The answer is, we would have witnessed exactly the same thing 00:11:26.94\00:11:30.68 because there is no dichotomy between the character 00:11:30.71\00:11:33.35 of a Father and His love for us and the character of 00:11:33.38\00:11:36.44 the Son and the, Holy Spirit for that matter, 00:11:36.47\00:11:38.51 and their love for us. 00:11:38.54\00:11:40.29 We would've witnessed exactly the same thing. 00:11:40.32\00:11:42.28 Jesus did not come here to persuade us, to persuade God 00:11:42.31\00:11:45.74 to love us, to persuade us, He came here to reveal the 00:11:45.77\00:11:48.67 love that God has in His heart for us. 00:11:48.70\00:11:50.59 "God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son. " 00:11:50.62\00:11:53.01 It's a powerful truth. 00:11:54.01\00:11:54.98 So the love precedes the giving. 00:11:54.99\00:11:56.24 He loves us, therefore, He gives the Son. 00:11:56.27\00:11:59.38 He doesn't come to a new position of loving us because 00:11:59.41\00:12:04.19 of the sacrifice the Son. 00:12:04.22\00:12:05.57 And this is a vital truth, this is a vital truth friends 00:12:05.60\00:12:08.39 for us to understand. 00:12:08.42\00:12:09.39 That God loves us so He gives. 00:12:09.40\00:12:11.95 Love motivates God to give, and when Christ came to this earth, 00:12:11.98\00:12:15.46 Christ reveals to us, what is in the heart of the Father. 00:12:15.49\00:12:18.65 You need to know that, we need to know that in order for 00:12:18.68\00:12:21.16 us to be reconciled in this relationship. 00:12:21.19\00:12:23.22 We need to know that God's love is never changed for us. 00:12:23.25\00:12:25.96 God's love has never changed for you. 00:12:25.99\00:12:27.44 It is the same unchanging down through time. 00:12:27.47\00:12:30.48 Down through the history of the human race, 00:12:30.52\00:12:32.07 His love remains the same. 00:12:32.10\00:12:33.59 The mountaintop of Scripture, James, repeated 00:12:33.62\00:12:39.00 over and over again. 00:12:39.03\00:12:40.15 It's like a series of mountains. 00:12:40.18\00:12:41.71 You are going along through Scripture and you are 00:12:41.74\00:12:43.77 encountering over and over again, this escalating idea 00:12:43.80\00:12:47.38 that God is love and God loves you and God loves me with a 00:12:47.41\00:12:53.44 depth of love and a passion of love that knows no bounds. 00:12:53.47\00:12:56.43 Even to the point where God Himself was willing, more than 00:12:56.46\00:13:02.03 willing, eager to die for you and me. 00:13:02.06\00:13:04.91 And this is going to be a continuing theme that we are 00:13:04.94\00:13:06.89 going to be touching on as we move through the book of 00:13:06.92\00:13:08.56 Hebrews because it is the basis of Hebrews. 00:13:08.59\00:13:11.18 So stay with us continue to study this book with us. 00:13:11.21\00:13:14.30 We look forward to learn more about this. 00:13:14.33\00:13:16.12 God bless! 00:13:16.15\00:13:17.53
