Hi friends, welcome back to our continuing study in 00:00:21.35\00:00:24.48 The Books Of Book. 00:00:24.51\00:00:25.82 We're in the book of Hebrews, and I am your co-host 00:00:25.85\00:00:27.68 James Rafferty, and I'm here with Ty Gibson. 00:00:27.71\00:00:30.04 Well, we are looking at the book of Hebrews James. 00:00:30.07\00:00:32.21 This is an exciting study. 00:00:32.24\00:00:34.15 Because as we learn in our opening study, which was 00:00:34.18\00:00:37.51 kind of an overview, of the book of Hebrews. 00:00:37.54\00:00:40.18 Hebrews is a masterpiece of Holy Spirit inspired literature. 00:00:40.21\00:00:45.68 We want to invite our friends who are viewing, 00:00:45.71\00:00:47.99 those listening in on the radio, if you are 00:00:48.02\00:00:49.43 not driving that is. 00:00:49.46\00:00:50.80 Pull up a chair, grab your Bible and open to Hebrews, 00:00:50.83\00:00:53.65 Chapter 1, as we launch right into our study. 00:00:53.68\00:00:56.42 We left off with the theme of something better, 00:00:56.45\00:00:58.89 and we are going to pick up with this theme 00:00:58.92\00:01:00.37 in Hebrews Chapter 1. 00:01:00.40\00:01:02.17 The whole book of Hebrews has a number of themes. 00:01:02.20\00:01:04.67 One of the themes is this theme of better things. 00:01:04.70\00:01:07.36 Right here in Hebrews chapter 1, we introduce ourselves, 00:01:07.39\00:01:11.81 or God introduce ourselves to Him, I should say. 00:01:11.84\00:01:14.08 We are introduced to God. 00:01:14.11\00:01:15.52 Paul gets right to the point in Hebrews 1, verse 1, 00:01:15.55\00:01:18.92 "God, who at sundry times, in divers manners spake in 00:01:18.95\00:01:22.51 time past unto the fathers, by the Prophets has in these 00:01:22.54\00:01:26.10 last days spoken unto us by his son, whom he has 00:01:26.13\00:01:29.54 appointed heir of all things and by whom also he made the worlds" 00:01:29.57\00:01:32.55 God wants to speak with us. 00:01:32.58\00:01:34.88 God has never stopped wanting to communicate with us. 00:01:34.91\00:01:37.56 I love this. 00:01:37.59\00:01:38.56 The book of Hebrews, opens with Paul bringing to our 00:01:38.57\00:01:42.48 attention that the Lord Jesus Christ is 00:01:42.51\00:01:44.87 God's supreme revelation. 00:01:44.90\00:01:46.58 There is a contrast that drawn here, between 00:01:46.61\00:01:50.03 the Prophets who have spoke in different ways at 00:01:50.06\00:01:52.38 different times in history. 00:01:52.41\00:01:54.57 That contrast is drawn between those prophetic 00:01:54.60\00:01:57.51 revelations and Jesus Christ, who is now the express 00:01:57.54\00:02:01.99 image of God's person come to earth. 00:02:02.02\00:02:04.04 The manifest glory of God in all its beauty, is brought 00:02:04.07\00:02:09.03 right up close and personal in Jesus Christ. 00:02:09.06\00:02:12.31 You know when you look at relationship Ty, it is very 00:02:12.34\00:02:15.78 important for us to understand what God is doing here. 00:02:15.81\00:02:19.68 What point He is making here. 00:02:19.71\00:02:21.11 You know when you look at relationships, you are talking 00:02:21.14\00:02:23.34 about connecting with people, for example, 00:02:23.37\00:02:25.49 you could connect with people today by e-mail, 00:02:25.52\00:02:27.60 or by telephone, you can connect with people by letter. 00:02:27.63\00:02:30.15 There are different ways we can communicate, 00:02:30.18\00:02:31.87 but up close and personal makes all the difference. 00:02:31.90\00:02:35.15 God has continued to communicate with us, and I like 00:02:35.18\00:02:38.55 this because all the way from the fall, all the way 00:02:38.58\00:02:41.00 from Genesis, we find that God was a relational God. 00:02:41.03\00:02:44.32 He came to talk with us in the cool of the day. 00:02:44.35\00:02:46.98 Sin destroyed, that relationship, not from God's 00:02:47.01\00:02:51.84 perspective, but from our perspective. 00:02:51.87\00:02:53.37 As God comes in the cool of the day to talk to 00:02:53.40\00:02:56.03 Adam and Eve, after they have sinned, 00:02:56.06\00:02:57.82 what are they doing? 00:02:57.85\00:02:58.82 They're hiding, and we have been hiding 00:02:58.83\00:03:00.45 from God ever since. 00:03:00.48\00:03:01.65 The book of Hebrews is telling us that even though 00:03:01.68\00:03:05.06 we have been hiding from God, God has never ceased to 00:03:05.09\00:03:08.12 seek to communicate with us. 00:03:08.15\00:03:09.48 Well friends, we want to consider that 00:03:09.51\00:03:11.98 in Hebrews Chapter 1. 00:03:12.02\00:03:13.43 Jesus comes to earth as God in the flesh. 00:03:13.46\00:03:17.49 It's God that were dealing with, James. 00:03:17.52\00:03:19.23 It's not none other than the Creator of the universe 00:03:19.26\00:03:22.66 whom we are encountering, in this apparently 00:03:22.69\00:03:26.53 just a human being, 00:03:26.56\00:03:27.56 this man Jesus from Nazareth. 00:03:27.59\00:03:29.50 Here comes this person in every way, 00:03:29.53\00:03:32.59 like us, from all appearances. 00:03:32.62\00:03:35.22 Yet we are literally dealing with God in the flesh. 00:03:35.25\00:03:39.18 I like that in 2 Peter 1, verse 16, Peter uses this 00:03:39.21\00:03:43.86 language that really helps us to expand what's 00:03:43.89\00:03:46.99 is being said here. 00:03:47.02\00:03:47.99 He says we, speaking of the apostles and the others at 00:03:48.00\00:03:50.78 at that time. 00:03:50.81\00:03:51.78 He said we were eye witnesses of His Majesty. 00:03:51.79\00:03:55.56 Isn't that incredible? 00:03:55.59\00:03:56.94 I mean, you can feel the passion and the urgency 00:03:56.97\00:04:01.37 that comes through. 00:04:01.40\00:04:02.60 This kind of revelation, I mean think about it. 00:04:02.63\00:04:04.84 We as human beings have walked and talked with a person 00:04:04.87\00:04:09.49 for 31/2 years, and others literally grew up with Him 00:04:09.52\00:04:13.70 and had encounters with Him. 00:04:13.73\00:04:14.98 I mean, He was one of the kids on the block. 00:04:15.01\00:04:16.88 All of a sudden, it dawns on you, hey, that person, 00:04:16.91\00:04:21.80 we were dealing with was none other than God. 00:04:21.83\00:04:25.92 and we were eye witnesses of His Majesty. 00:04:25.95\00:04:28.21 This is important, because what God is trying to say to us 00:04:28.24\00:04:31.43 basically is, I have always wanted to be close to you. 00:04:31.46\00:04:35.23 I always wanted you to see Me. 00:04:35.26\00:04:36.55 I always wanted to be revealed to you and come close to you, 00:04:36.58\00:04:40.75 but you have changed in the way that you have responded to Me. 00:04:40.78\00:04:44.00 So, I have had to speak to you through the Prophets. 00:04:44.03\00:04:46.49 In some way, I have even had to mask myself, becoming a man, 00:04:46.52\00:04:50.29 becoming a human. 00:04:50.32\00:04:51.29 In some way, I have even had to mask Myself so that I don't 00:04:51.30\00:04:53.95 give you full disclosure. 00:04:53.98\00:04:55.06 I want you to know that in spite of that, in spite of 00:04:55.09\00:04:58.68 the way that sin has affected you, it has never 00:04:58.71\00:05:00.55 affected Me that way. 00:05:00.58\00:05:01.55 Malachi 3 says, that God has not changed. 00:05:01.56\00:05:04.03 James 1:17 also tells us that God does not change. 00:05:04.06\00:05:09.23 There is no variables, variableness must no shadow 00:05:09.26\00:05:12.06 of turning in God. 00:05:12.09\00:05:13.06 So the Bible is teaching us that God is love. 00:05:13.07\00:05:16.02 In this context, His love is manifested in an unbroken 00:05:16.05\00:05:20.22 relationship toward us. 00:05:20.25\00:05:21.44 The way He relates to us has not changed. 00:05:21.47\00:05:24.65 I have spoken to you, I continue to speak to you, 00:05:24.68\00:05:26.72 and now I come to speak to you in person. 00:05:26.75\00:05:29.03 Why, what is the point? 00:05:29.06\00:05:30.19 The underlying point Paul is making here, I love you. 00:05:30.22\00:05:33.53 I want a relationship with you. 00:05:33.56\00:05:35.04 I love that. 00:05:35.07\00:05:36.04 I've learned in my own personal experience, James, 00:05:36.05\00:05:38.86 as I know you have, that love, not only God's love 00:05:38.89\00:05:42.72 for us, but we get a feel for it. 00:05:42.75\00:05:45.60 We see shadows of it, we get a taste of it 00:05:45.63\00:05:48.16 in our human relationships. 00:05:48.19\00:05:49.97 I have had the privilege of being married to actually 00:05:50.00\00:05:54.21 one of your fellow workers and friends. 00:05:54.24\00:05:57.15 My wife Sue, we have been together since she was 13, 00:05:57.18\00:06:00.07 and I was 14. 00:06:00.10\00:06:01.07 We learned over the years that love is 00:06:01.09\00:06:03.72 exponential reality. 00:06:03.75\00:06:05.42 In other words, love doesn't have any bottom, it doesn't 00:06:05.45\00:06:07.72 have any edges, it doesn't have any cap. 00:06:07.75\00:06:09.40 In other words, God's love as the zenith, the apex of love, 00:06:09.43\00:06:16.99 is the ultimate reality of God's character. 00:06:17.02\00:06:21.58 So that we can go on growing in our relationship with God. 00:06:21.61\00:06:26.03 Growing in our knowledge of Him, growing in 00:06:26.06\00:06:28.43 our appreciation of Him. 00:06:28.46\00:06:29.73 Even our passion for God for ever and ever without end, 00:06:29.76\00:06:33.63 with out reaching a plateau. 00:06:33.66\00:06:35.63 I mean, if we as human beings are capable of always loving, 00:06:35.66\00:06:39.62 more, loving a little bit more passionately someone that we 00:06:39.65\00:06:42.75 have entered into a relationship with, 00:06:42.78\00:06:44.93 and we are growing together. 00:06:44.96\00:06:45.93 Loving a little bit more intelligently. 00:06:45.94\00:06:47.85 Loving a little bit more, 00:06:47.88\00:06:49.21 with all that we are as a human being. 00:06:49.24\00:06:53.28 And it doesn't seem to ever stop. 00:06:53.31\00:06:55.12 How much more, this encounter through Jesus, with God is 00:06:55.15\00:07:00.33 drawing us into a never-ending, forever deepening 00:07:00.36\00:07:04.44 relationship with Himself. 00:07:04.47\00:07:05.83 Amen, and you know, if that is not the problem, 00:07:05.86\00:07:08.94 in other words, if the problem is not from 00:07:08.97\00:07:11.39 God's perspective, but from our perspective, 00:07:11.42\00:07:13.18 if God is always wanting to have this everlasting 00:07:13.21\00:07:15.78 deepening relationship with us, but we are the ones 00:07:15.81\00:07:19.21 that have pulled away from Him. 00:07:19.24\00:07:21.13 Why have we pulled away from Him? 00:07:21.16\00:07:22.60 And I liked this verse because it explains to us, 00:07:22.63\00:07:24.91 what is happened in our relationship. 00:07:24.94\00:07:27.13 Verses found in Isaiah 59 verse 2. 00:07:27.16\00:07:30.02 It says, context, verse 1, "behold the Lord's hand is 00:07:30.05\00:07:33.95 not shortened that 00:07:33.98\00:07:35.30 he cannot save. neither is his ear heavy that he cannot hear. " 00:07:35.33\00:07:37.90 In other words, God is there for us. 00:07:37.93\00:07:39.29 He is there to hear us. 00:07:39.32\00:07:40.44 He wants relationship, He wants communication. 00:07:40.47\00:07:42.46 But verse 2, "your iniquities have separated between 00:07:42.49\00:07:46.52 you and your God and your sins have hid His face from 00:07:46.55\00:07:50.67 you that you will not hear. " 00:07:50.70\00:07:52.57 And I like what we were talking about earlier Ty, 00:07:52.60\00:07:54.92 because it tells me that the problem is not with God, 00:07:54.95\00:07:57.79 the problem is with us. 00:07:57.82\00:07:58.79 We are not willing to hear, we are not willing to listen, 00:07:58.80\00:08:01.09 we're not willing to communicate. 00:08:01.12\00:08:02.18 Sin has had its effect upon us. 00:08:02.21\00:08:04.44 And that is why in verse 3, of Hebrews Chapter 1, 00:08:04.47\00:08:07.76 God says I'm going to take care of sin because sin 00:08:07.79\00:08:10.64 has caused a problem between us. 00:08:10.67\00:08:12.19 It says here in verse 3, "who being the brightness of His 00:08:12.22\00:08:14.84 glory", talking about Christ, "the express image of His 00:08:14.87\00:08:17.13 person, and upholding all things by the word of His power 00:08:17.16\00:08:20.31 when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the 00:08:20.34\00:08:24.46 right hand of man. " 00:08:24.49\00:08:25.46 I love this. 00:08:25.47\00:08:26.44 By Himself He purged our sins, why, because sin was 00:08:26.45\00:08:29.43 causing a problem in the relationship. 00:08:29.46\00:08:30.76 We couldn't deal with it, He dealt with it. 00:08:30.79\00:08:33.03 Yeah, so clearly in these first three verses of Hebrews 00:08:33.06\00:08:35.93 Chapter 1, we encounter God as the ultimate communicator. 00:08:35.96\00:08:39.28 He takes the initiative, and He comes to us with not 00:08:39.31\00:08:43.59 just a message in words, but a message in the flesh. 00:08:43.62\00:08:47.24 He comes to this world clothed in our very humanity and 00:08:47.27\00:08:51.71 becomes God's alternate expression. 00:08:51.74\00:08:53.92 I like what it says in one favorite book of mine, 00:08:53.95\00:08:57.37 that Jesus was God's thoughts made audible. 00:08:57.40\00:09:00.35 God's heart put on display, made visible, God with flesh on, 00:09:00.38\00:09:06.01 up close and personal, as we have said here. 00:09:06.04\00:09:08.52 And Jesus, when He came to this world in Hebrews Chapter 1. 00:09:08.55\00:09:12.02 There are a number of ways, James, in which it is pointed 00:09:12.05\00:09:14.86 out that it is God we are dealing with here. 00:09:14.89\00:09:16.51 This is extremely profound to realize in, Chapter 1, 00:09:16.54\00:09:20.89 verse 2, where it says that this person that we are 00:09:20.92\00:09:23.69 encountering that purged our sins by Himself was the 00:09:23.72\00:09:27.05 One who made the worlds. 00:09:27.08\00:09:28.64 So this is the that Creator of the Universe, the One who made 00:09:28.67\00:09:33.03 everything in a sense becomes made. 00:09:33.06\00:09:35.72 He becomes a part of His own creation, and He is the only 00:09:35.75\00:09:39.99 One that is qualified to purge our sins by Himself. 00:09:40.02\00:09:45.46 And there it is emphasis here, He did this by Himself. 00:09:45.49\00:09:49.16 He did it without human participation, and He did it, 00:09:49.19\00:09:52.04 we're told in verse 4, without angelic participation. 00:09:52.07\00:09:56.21 Jesus is better than the angels. 00:09:56.24\00:09:58.45 Angels in verse 4 could not occupy a redemptive position. 00:09:58.48\00:10:03.29 Later on in Chapter 1, verse 14, it's clear that they are 00:10:03.32\00:10:06.98 ministering spirits, but they are not redeemer's. 00:10:07.01\00:10:11.18 There is no way that angels can enter into the 00:10:11.21\00:10:13.93 actual saving of our souls. 00:10:13.96\00:10:16.99 God does that by Himself. 00:10:17.02\00:10:20.04 And I like this, because it leads into another aspect, 00:10:20.07\00:10:23.17 another question that comes up often in the Bible, 00:10:23.20\00:10:26.04 especially in relation to the Old Testament, and that is 00:10:26.07\00:10:27.92 Why did God require all these sacrifices for sin? 00:10:27.95\00:10:31.97 Why did God require the death of all these animals 00:10:32.00\00:10:34.57 or death itself. 00:10:34.60\00:10:35.86 That is a question that is brought up many times. 00:10:35.89\00:10:37.65 And the answer to that question is very simple and based in 00:10:37.68\00:10:42.30 the Old Testament as well as the New Testament. 00:10:42.33\00:10:43.90 And the answer is this, God did not require 00:10:43.93\00:10:46.83 sacrifices for sin. 00:10:46.86\00:10:48.97 God did not require animals to die for sin. 00:10:49.00\00:10:50.95 Sin required that. 00:10:50.98\00:10:52.66 Sin leads to death and all those sacrifices were God's 00:10:52.69\00:10:57.39 way of trying to help us to understand that one truth. 00:10:57.42\00:10:59.87 The wages of sin is death. 00:10:59.90\00:11:01.89 This is what sin does. 00:11:01.92\00:11:03.16 God is trying to communicate that to us 00:11:03.19\00:11:06.10 the reality of what sin does, because He has, in 00:11:06.13\00:11:08.89 the context of sin stepped in and stopped us from 00:11:08.92\00:11:12.02 experiencing that consequence. 00:11:12.05\00:11:14.56 This is a loaded term here, James. 00:11:14.59\00:11:17.08 When it says that He by Himself purged our sins. 00:11:17.11\00:11:20.52 Because when we fast-forward and will get there in greater 00:11:20.55\00:11:23.30 detail, but will we fast forward to Chapter 9, 00:11:23.33\00:11:25.90 verse 26 of Hebrews. 00:11:25.93\00:11:27.95 It says that Jesus appeared once at the end of the ages 00:11:27.98\00:11:30.99 to put away sin. 00:11:31.02\00:11:32.24 Similar to this phrase purge sin, 00:11:32.27\00:11:34.12 by the sacrifice of Himself. 00:11:34.15\00:11:36.78 It's God coming to this world and making the sacrifice, 00:11:36.81\00:11:40.99 not requiring the sacrifice. 00:11:41.02\00:11:43.28 I mean, I guess there's a sense in which He is requiring that 00:11:43.31\00:11:45.78 in and of Himself, but He knows that we can't in any way make 00:11:45.81\00:11:50.51 a sufficient sacrifice for our sins. 00:11:50.54\00:11:53.95 It is as if God is saying to us, it's your sin that has 00:11:53.98\00:11:58.23 caused suffering and death to Me, because I have willingly 00:11:58.26\00:12:01.01 subjected Myself to be your Redeemer and your Savior. 00:12:01.04\00:12:05.77 Because this is not something you can achieve. 00:12:05.80\00:12:08.04 You can't fulfill this. 00:12:08.07\00:12:09.47 Exactly, in fact, Isaiah Chapter 1, verses 11 and 12. 00:12:09.50\00:12:12.45 This is God talking to us. 00:12:12.48\00:12:13.88 We are asking Him why did He want all these 00:12:13.91\00:12:16.54 these sacrifices for sin? 00:12:16.57\00:12:17.54 Why was He wanting all these animals to be killed? 00:12:17.55\00:12:20.31 This is God talking to us, this is God asking us 00:12:20.34\00:12:22.33 the same question? 00:12:22.36\00:12:23.51 Isaiah 1 verse 11. "To what purpose is the multitude of 00:12:23.54\00:12:27.31 your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: 00:12:27.34\00:12:29.39 I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat 00:12:29.42\00:12:31.92 of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, 00:12:31.95\00:12:34.70 or of lambs, or of he goats. When ye come to appear 00:12:34.73\00:12:37.38 before me, who hath required this at your hand, 00:12:37.41\00:12:39.42 to tread my courts? don't bring it to Me anymore. " 00:12:39.45\00:12:42.14 This is God speaking back to us. 00:12:42.17\00:12:43.94 This is God talking to us. 00:12:43.97\00:12:45.06 This is God communicating to us. 00:12:45.09\00:12:46.26 I am not interested in all those sacrifices. 00:12:46.29\00:12:48.77 Sin required that and sin leads to death. 00:12:48.80\00:12:52.29 Sins reward is death and death is an enemy of God. 00:12:52.33\00:12:56.59 1 Corinthians 15, Paul tells us clearly there, death is the 00:12:56.62\00:12:59.07 last enemy that God will destroy. 00:12:59.10\00:13:00.52 So why is God allowing this system be set up 00:13:00.55\00:13:03.18 in the first place? 00:13:03.21\00:13:04.18 Because He wants to instruct us and teach us 00:13:04.19\00:13:05.86 what sin does. 00:13:05.89\00:13:06.86 Yeah that's right, it is a fascinating thing, 00:13:06.87\00:13:08.53 that when we look at Scripture, the prophets and the 00:13:08.56\00:13:13.34 Apostles are bringing out this powerful insight. 00:13:13.37\00:13:15.93 For example in 2 Corinthians 5:19 we have these words. 00:13:15.96\00:13:20.32 "God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself. " 00:13:20.35\00:13:26.02 So, what we are witnessing in Jesus Christ, what we are 00:13:26.05\00:13:29.88 witnessing at the cross. 00:13:29.91\00:13:31.58 Specifically, this monumental self-sacrifice. 00:13:31.61\00:13:35.69 We are witnessing the God of the Universe making 00:13:35.72\00:13:40.52 this self-sacrifice. 00:13:40.55\00:13:41.84 God's love is on display with unprecedented glory 00:13:41.87\00:13:46.18 at the cross of Jesus Christ. 00:13:46.21\00:13:47.82 And this is the theme of something better, 00:13:47.85\00:13:49.78 this is the focus of the book of Hebrews. 00:13:49.81\00:13:52.19 It opens right up here in Hebrews Chapter 1. 00:13:52.22\00:13:54.91 It introduces to us a personal God, who has personally taken 00:13:54.94\00:13:58.17 responsibility for our sins and we're to continue with this 00:13:58.20\00:14:01.01 same theme in just one moment. 00:14:01.04\00:14:02.04 So don't go away we'll be right back. 00:14:02.07\00:14:03.27
