friends, is filled

with some spectacular tensions.

Here we find Jesus
coming back to Capernaum

for the second time
early in his ministry.

And you've

got to recall the first time
that Jesus went to Capernaum,
00:04:32.43\00:04:35.20
he turned the
entire city upside down.
00:04:36.10\00:04:38.51
While there, Jesus
healed Peter's mother in law.
00:04:39.57\00:04:42.98
He cast a demon out of a man in
the middle of a church service,
00:04:44.25\00:04:48.22
and then he had a sunset healing
where Jesus healed everybody
00:04:49.42\00:04:53.82
in sight so that everyone
left with whatever they needed,
00:04:53.86\00:04:58.16
so that if you came limping,
then you left strutting.

If you came
blind, then you left.
00:05:03.90\00:05:07.04
See if you came deaf,
then you left hearing.

If you came with
cancer, you left without cancer

if you came cripple,

And if you came late,

And the thing it
teaches is a metaphorical truth

I love about Jesus
is he made no referrals.

anyone to a specialist

because every need you

And it is in this context,

upon hearing that
Jesus is back in town,

Now, today, I don't
want to focus briefly

details of this story.

I don't want to
spend a whole lot of time

talking about the
ingenuity of the friends

that let the man

down through the roof, because
sometimes we get more impressed

with what they do than
we are with what Jesus did.

And so you've got to see this
now that this moment has become

suddenly upward and irreverent,
as Jesus is preaching the Word

and as Jesus preaches the
word debris begins to fall

from the ceiling
as hands pull back

the tile and a man is
let down through the roof

and understand for a moment
there is a must see spirit

that seizes those
that are in the room.

All of a sudden
they begin to tussle

in order to get a good view
of what is going to take place.

There is a sense of
anticipation that ricochets

throughout the room.

People put down their
drinks and their plates

and they take out their
phones to be able to record

this miracle moment.

And as the man is
let down through the roof

and he looks at Jesus and
Jesus reads the unspoken prayer

of the man when Jesus
speaks, this is not to speak.

There is a spirit
where people get ready to see

the miracle and folks sit
on the edge of their chairs

as Jesus fixes his
neck to say something,

and Jesus lifts up one hand
and says to the man on this bed,

Son, you're saying all forgiven

and understand.

In this moment it
becomes somewhat anticlimactic.
00:07:45.19\00:07:50.40
In fact, those
who are in the room
00:07:50.43\00:07:52.87
breathed sighs
of disappointment,
00:07:53.60\00:07:55.70
for there is an
unexpressed frustration
00:07:56.64\00:07:59.31
that all Jesus does is healed.
00:08:00.08\00:08:02.44
The man is forgive the man.
00:08:02.48\00:08:04.71
In other words, the man
has an obvious physical malady.

But Jesus is
addressing his unseen malady.
00:08:10.19\00:08:13.25
He has an outward need, but

Jesus prioritizes
his spiritual needs.

And Jesus is teaching
us a truth that sometimes

our obviously is not our
most urgent need, sometimes

and most immediate need is
not the most critical need.

In fact, friends,
this man's greatest need

is to experience the
amazing grace of Jesus Christ.

And for a moment, climb down
00:08:42.22\00:08:44.55
with me into this man's world.
00:08:44.59\00:08:47.52
Do you realize that
the worst part about being
00:08:48.56\00:08:51.66
paralyzed is not
just the inability to go.
00:08:51.69\00:08:56.00
The worst part is where
it keeps you from going.
00:08:57.00\00:08:59.67
Do you realize that
because he is paralyzed,
00:09:00.67\00:09:03.54
he is set out from the
Atonement Network of the day
00:09:04.57\00:09:07.74
so that someone like
him, a leper, and the woman

with the issue of blood

would be separated from
the temple and its services.

And because he cannot work,
he cannot afford sacrifice,

because he
cannot avoid sacrifice,

he cannot participate in
the services of the Temple.

But the thing I love about Jesus
is that when the man couldn't

make it to the temple,

Jesus brought the temple to
where the man could reach him

and understand that it's
been some time since he has had
00:09:38.94\00:09:42.68
a sense of God's
expunging of his record.

It's been a long
time that he's before,
00:09:47.35\00:09:49.25
since he's had a
sense of nearness to God.
00:09:50.15\00:09:52.39
It has been a while since
he's been able to participate
00:09:53.56\00:09:55.99
and services like this,
00:09:56.56\00:09:57.93
which symbolizes the
redemption of God's people
00:09:57.96\00:10:01.30
and understand your not
with it, that the only thing
00:10:02.36\00:10:05.13
he would want to hear more
than Jesus say, Take up your bed
00:10:05.17\00:10:10.34
and walk is to hear Jesus say
00:10:10.37\00:10:13.31
your sins have been forgiven.

In other words, if
Jesus steps at forgiveness,

Jesus is still
right with this man.

In other words,
just to have the sin

remove was enough just
to have the condemnation.

the sins removed is enough.

And I think that there are

missing the point,

not the car that you drive,

house where you live.

promotion that you receive.

But the greatest
blessing in life is to have your

And understand,
beloved, that Jesus shows us

what we should be
shouting over by teaching us

which one is more
difficult for him to do.

Understand what Jesus does.

He perceives their
heart that they believe that

He does not have the power
or the authority to forgive sin.

So he asks the question,
which is easier for me to say

or to say take up

And Jesus knows
that they don't believe

that He has power over sin

and to demonstrate
His power over sin,

what he does is he alleviates
the man of his sickness.

Now you're probably say,
why do you address sickness

in order to teach
them your power over sin.

Remember that a Jew at
that time always says suffering

some type of sin.

that was a belief

sickness is He wants us to know

that sin and suffering
are not always related.

removes the sin first is

then my suffering is temporary.

somebody to know this is because

some of us feel
some alienation from God,

because we're carrying guilt
simply by virtue of the fact

that we have suffering.

But I need to free somebody
today to know that the sickness

is not always because of
saying that the miscarriage

is not because of some
uncovered iniquity, that losing

the job is not evidence
that you're losing your hold on.

It says that many are the
afflictions the right says,

but the Lord
delivers them from them all.

blessing we can receive
