friends, our text today

is filled with
essential truth for the soul.

And the first thing
this teaches us, Beloved,

is that our greatest
needs are not financial,
00:06:57.18\00:07:01.98
our physical, but our
greatest needs are spiritual.
00:07:01.98\00:07:07.62
Here we find
Jesus concluding a time
00:07:07.62\00:07:10.39
where He blessed the children
by laying hands on them,
00:07:10.39\00:07:14.03
and he's preparing to
leave the region of Judea.
00:07:14.20\00:07:18.07
And though
00:07:18.07\00:07:18.57
the story of the rich,
00:07:18.57\00:07:19.80
young ruler does
not have a happy ending,
00:07:19.80\00:07:22.54
there are some traits about him,
I believe, to be noteworthy.
00:07:22.80\00:07:27.18
You see, the
gravity of his need is seen
00:07:27.18\00:07:30.28
and the
desperation of his approach.
00:07:30.28\00:07:33.25
In fact, the words say
his friends, that he would not
00:07:33.25\00:07:35.88
even allow Jesus to leave town.
00:07:35.88\00:07:38.95
But he runs him down on foot.
00:07:38.95\00:07:41.79
Falls on his face.
00:07:41.79\00:07:43.43
Before Christ and makes his
request known for eternal life.
00:07:43.43\00:07:48.46
Now, this scene would be
00:07:48.46\00:07:49.63
a spectacle to most,
because as a wealthy person
00:07:49.63\00:07:53.64
he is perhaps used
to traveling by Chariot.
00:07:53.84\00:07:56.67
But this day he dismounts
and comes to Jesus on foot.
00:07:56.91\00:08:01.68
As a ruler, he's used to being.
00:08:01.68\00:08:03.51
Accompanied. By security.
00:08:03.51\00:08:05.48
But at this time,
he outruns his convoy
00:08:05.48\00:08:09.18
and beats them to see Jesus.
00:08:09.18\00:08:11.85
And this man as a.
00:08:11.85\00:08:13.25
Ruler, is used to
summoning people to come to him.
00:08:13.25\00:08:17.49
But this man doesn't
send anybody to see Jesus.
00:08:17.49\00:08:20.60
He goes to see Jesus for
himself and needs no friends
00:08:20.60\00:08:24.93
that He does not come to Jesus
with a display of show or power.
00:08:24.93\00:08:29.57
He does not approach Christ
with self-importance or titles.
00:08:29.57\00:08:33.78
He does not come to
Jesus clad with hubris.

But there is a soul desperation
00:08:37.21\00:08:40.22
that drives him to
Christ to seek eternal life.

Now, I need you to get friends
that this would not be awkward
00:08:44.59\00:08:47.79
if there was a physical
illness that drove him to Jesus.
00:08:47.96\00:08:52.23
In fact, we're used to
seeing people like Blind Body
00:08:52.23\00:08:55.83
Mass make a scene to cry
out for physical healing.
00:08:55.83\00:08:59.67
We understand why the
woman with the issue of blood
00:08:59.67\00:09:03.00
would make a spectacle
00:09:03.17\00:09:04.87
to get healing for
her 12 years of illness.
00:09:04.87\00:09:08.21
We know why lepers would
swallow their pride and burst
00:09:08.21\00:09:12.05
through the crowd to see Jesus.
00:09:12.05\00:09:14.15
We understand why the sick
and the crippled and the cancer
00:09:14.15\00:09:19.32
would go great distances to
get their needs met by Jesus.
00:09:19.42\00:09:23.99
But there is something
00:09:24.16\00:09:25.49
altogether different
that drives this man because
00:09:25.49\00:09:29.66
from an earthly standpoint,
he has everything that he needs.
00:09:29.66\00:09:33.67
The Bible says he is young
00:09:33.87\00:09:35.90
so that we can
presume that he has his help.
00:09:35.90\00:09:38.57
We know that he is
rich for the Bible.
00:09:38.74\00:09:41.08
Says he has great possessions.
00:09:41.08\00:09:43.21
We know that he is a ruler,
a man and great authority.
00:09:43.41\00:09:47.35
And yet his soul
desperation drives him to Jesus
00:09:47.52\00:09:51.65
in such a way that
he's temporarily concluded
00:09:51.79\00:09:55.66
that my everything
without Jesus is nothing.
00:09:55.86\00:10:01.13
And what he's
showing us today, friends,
00:10:01.13\00:10:03.26
that our greatest
need is not physical.
00:10:03.26\00:10:06.50
Our greatest
needs are not financial.
00:10:06.67\00:10:09.54
Our greatest needs
are not relational.

I need you to get
church that our greatest needs

are spiritual.
00:10:15.71\00:10:17.55
And see, the problem,
friends, is that sometimes it is
00:10:17.55\00:10:21.05
only physical circumstance
00:10:21.05\00:10:24.12
that creates spiritual urgency.

And I don't want to
stay here long, but I.

Need to.

Say this to the church,

that we ought to spend more
time praying about the internal

than we do praying
about the external.

Let me say it again

that we ought to spend less
time praying about the external

and more time
praying about the internal.

In other words, we pray
hard about physical sickness.

We pray hard about
financial sick ness.

about marital sickness.

relational sickness.

And the problem is this

is that circumstantial sickness
we take to the emergency room,

but spiritual
sickness we treat with.

Tylenol, your act and.

Brand new,

and others who are
certain stance of sickness

we address right
away. But we get to

that spiritual
illness whenever we get to it.

And what I'm
saying to somebody today

is that you've missed the point.

If you spent more time

praying about your
arthritis, then your attitude,

you should not be

praying more about
your enemies than your ego.

You should not be worried
about being financially cleared

if you're not
spiritually cleared.

You shouldn't be praying more
about a house than holiness.

about rent than your readiness.

You ought not be praying about
a career and not character.

You ought to spend more time

praying about the

growth of your faith then
the growth of your finances.

And this is the key church.

The problem is that we
pray about those things.

The problem is that we
pray from the outside in

when we ought to be
praying from the inside out.

See how many of us
know that your prayers ought

to be like an

You see a microwave
cook from the outside.

But guess what?

The outside will
look done and moist.

But the inside
will be cold and hard.

But your prayers ought to
be like a conventional oven

where, man, the work
is done on the inside.

And the last thing to be
completed is the outside.

And see, the problem is
that when the inside, outside

get first things first, then we
cease to pray about the inside.

thing I need you to get

is that the issue
is how we in the order.

Because when you
have internal growth,

external is going to follow.

we can't focus on the surface.

We got to do a work
beneath the surface.

I remember

growing up in high school,
Malcolm, I work at Florida

State University in the dorms,
painting and doing odd jobs.

And so we would paint the doors
from one color to the next.

And there were times
where we would be lazy
00:13:38.41\00:13:40.88
and we would try to paint over
the yellow and paint it white.

But once it began to dry.

What happened is the old color
would begin to bleed through.

And what we learned

is that we had to put
this thing called primer.

We had to put Primer
on it that kind of covered

what was underneath

so that what was on the
top would never be wasted.

And what I'm saying is

that you've got to
prime your inside in prayer.

Don't just try to
cover it with the external.

You've got to
have something that's

going to bless the internal.

And so I need you
to get this friends,

because the rich, young ruler
has everything that is external,

but he is missing the internal.

And I need you to know
that it is internal lack

that ultimately
drives him to Jesus Christ.

This is an epic theme
for our consideration,

because what he's showing is
that if you have the external,

you can't be content if
you don't have the internal.

But guess what?

If you've got
internal wholeness, guess what?

You can be content without
some of the outside stuff.

And seem to love it.

The reason that you've got
to focus more on the internal

that every external problem

is going to be canceled
by the second coming of Jesus

that every external problem

is going to be canceled,

but unaddressed

internal problems are
going to become permanent.

I need you to know
that the coming of Christ

is going to cancel
every physical problem.

relational problem.

Is there anybody
excited that when Jesus comes,

he's going to cancel
every external problem of life?

But the reason
you've got to focus

on the internal is
how many of us know

that the only thing that's going
to make the trip from Earth

to Glory

is a character that is complete.
00:16:02.86\00:16:05.43
We all know that today. Church.

In other words, it is not
until the character is complete

that is going to make the
transition from Earth to glory.

Is there anybody that knows

the car ain't going
to make it to glory?

That that's old house is
not going to make it to glory.

So degrees are not
going to make it to glory.

It is only a completed character
that's going to make the trip.

And so I can't spend my
time worrying about the outward

trophies of life.

I've got to make
sure that my soul

is right with God.

And so, man, I go
into the Apple store

because my phone
had been dropped.

It had been cracked and it had
00:16:50.77\00:16:53.31
brakes all in the phone.
00:16:53.31\00:16:55.01
And so when I
went in, I was nervous
