the book of Mark chapter four
and we'll begin together at
verse number 35, Mark chapter

at verse number 35. Mark chapter
four in verse 35. When you get

the same day when evening had

Now, when he had left the
multitude, they took him along

And the great windstorm arose

so that it was already filling.
But he was in the stern asleep

you not care that we are

I want to talk to you for a
little while under the subject
size doesn't matter,

and I want to talk to you today
about the problem with
privilege. Let's pray together.

Father, in this little while,
would you say much, Father, I
pray that the same way a dish

towel reaches its saturation
point. Lord, would you allow us
to reach our saturation point

with your spirit today? So,
Father, I'm praying that you
would make your presence so

dense that it would smother all
rivaling principalities. Father,
I'm praying that faith will be

multiplied in the hearing of the
word. Hide me in the shadows of
the cross that Jesus alone might

be heard. And at the end of our

name of him who is altogether

You know, friends, about three
years ago, my wife and I went
down to Florida to spend a
00:04:07.41\00:04:18.99
little time with my family. And
while there we left the kids
with their grandparents and we
00:04:19.02\00:04:28.56
slipped over to Destin to get a
day at the beach. And so while I
was there on the shore allowing
00:04:28.60\00:04:37.34
the rhythmic waves to massage
the stress knots from my brain,
I looked out into the ocean and
00:04:37.37\00:04:45.48
I saw two boats or ships
crossing paths. Now I'm not a
nautical expert in any sense,
00:04:45.51\00:04:54.69
but there was first what looked
like a tiny fishing or
recreational boat. This tiny
00:04:54.72\00:05:03.50
boat was buffeted and battered
in the sea and it moved slowly
through an agitated ocean. The
00:05:03.53\00:05:09.97
second boat was some type of
cruise ship of some sort. It was
larger in stature. And it was
00:05:10.01\00:05:17.11
interesting that this big boat
moved seamlessly through this
agitated body of water. Its trip
00:05:17.15\00:05:22.62
was so smooth that they had
their drinks on the edge of the
boat because they had no fear of
00:05:22.65\00:05:31.49
turbulence or disruption. And I
marveled at the contrast of
these boats on the water and I
00:05:31.53\00:05:38.87
could not help but think to
myself that if you were to ask
them about their experiences on
00:05:38.90\00:05:47.84
the water, they would describe
two different events. Those in
the little boat would say that
00:05:47.88\00:05:54.42
today the water was choppy, it
was rough, it was hard, it was a
difficult day on the water. But
00:05:54.45\00:06:03.09
if you asked those in the big
boat, they would say today the
water was great, the weather was
00:06:03.12\00:06:10.73
smooth, and it was a great time
for us to be out on the water.
And see, they would assume that
00:06:10.77\00:06:17.84
because it was not hard for them
that it was no difficulty on the
water, they would assume that
00:06:17.87\00:06:27.88
because it did not disturb them,
there would be no disturbance at
all. And this my friends is how
00:06:27.92\00:06:37.13
privilege works where people of
different people groups describe
the same situation in different
00:06:37.16\00:06:43.16
terms because of their vantage
point where people with superior
positioning have superior
00:06:43.20\00:06:52.14
experiences and as a result they
have an elevated assessment of
how things are actually going.
00:06:52.17\00:06:57.65
And the problem with privilege
is when people with superior
experience deny somebody's
00:06:57.68\00:07:04.39
inferior experience and they act
like you've actually made your
experience up. And the fact is,
00:07:04.42\00:07:11.16
friends that many of us are
afforded privilege in many ways,
some are afforded privilege by
00:07:11.19\00:07:15.53
their last name, some get
privileged by their family
inheritance, and some get
00:07:15.56\00:07:23.87
privilege based upon their
gender. And there are some that
get privileges based upon the
00:07:23.91\00:07:30.15
color of their skin. And the
problem with racial privilege is
that sometimes those in the
00:07:30.18\00:07:36.12
majority will not acknowledge
the experiences of those without
privilege. And let me be clear
00:07:36.15\00:07:43.56
that I'm not mad if you have
privilege, it's just going to be
a problem when you act as if
00:07:43.59\00:07:48.60
everybody has the same
opportunity. See, the problem is
when those in the big boat
00:07:48.63\00:07:56.60
complain because you are seasick
in the small boat. And see the
issue of racial issues that
00:07:56.64\00:08:01.98
we've had these last five years
is because in this country we
assess things differently
00:08:02.01\00:08:08.82
because we've got different
positions in society. In other
words, those in the big boat
00:08:08.85\00:08:13.25
don't see a problem with
policing because their young
people are not being brutally
00:08:13.29\00:08:19.79
killed when lethal force is not
warranted. Those in the big boat
don't have a problem with the
00:08:19.83\00:08:28.77
justice system because their
kids don't get double the
penalty for the same drug
00:08:28.80\00:08:34.11
infraction or offense. Those in
the big boat don't have a
problem with Gender
00:08:34.14\00:08:37.48
discrimination when you have
women that get the same, do the
same job, and get less pay

because they shave their legs
instead of shaving their face,
those in the big boat don't see
00:08:43.25\00:08:47.46
a problem with covid because it
wasn't killing 50% of the folk
in the African-American
00:08:47.49\00:08:53.13
community. Those in the big boat
don't see a problem with the
economy, even though the
00:08:53.16\00:09:03.07
African-American employment rate
is twice their white
counterpart. And see out of
00:09:03.10\00:09:09.78
privilege comes the narrative
that all is well, that if you
just work hard and have personal
00:09:09.81\00:09:17.65
accountability and pull yourself
up by your own bootstraps, that
we can all have the same
00:09:17.69\00:09:27.66
experience. And see the problem
with those with superior
privilege is that some see
00:09:27.73\00:09:33.90
themselves as superior beings
and see to acknowledge privilege
is to disprove the long-held
00:09:33.94\00:09:41.48
belief that my superior position
is based upon my inherent
supremacy. And see how many of
00:09:41.51\00:09:44.98
us understand that there is no
work ethic, that there is no
hustle that can close the gap on
00:09:45.01\00:09:51.89
the type of distance that's
between us and other cultures.
Are you hearing me today? In
00:09:51.92\00:09:57.66
other words, what privilege is
like? It's like running the
hundred-yard dash against
00:09:57.69\00:10:03.00
somebody that's got a 50-yard
headstart. And in other words,
you may close the gap along the
00:10:03.03\00:10:09.87
way, but they're still going to
finish first because they've got
such a far head start. Are y'all
00:10:09.90\00:10:15.48
with me today? In other words,
let me say it this way. I
remember during the pandemic
00:10:15.51\00:10:18.88
when my kids were at home, I was
their bible and PE teacher, are
y'all here in the pastor today?

And so there was a circle in our
neighborhood and I would allow
them to race against one
00:10:25.35\00:10:32.66
another. And so sometimes I
wanted my youngest son to win.
And so I would give him a large
00:10:32.69\00:10:39.53
head start in front of his two
older siblings. And it's funny
because when he came around the
00:10:39.57\00:10:44.14
corner and beat his siblings, I
need you to know he ain't have
no humility about his victory.

Listen, listen, that boy was
pointing finger, he was dabbing
and he was talking trash and the
00:10:52.95\00:10:57.79
brother and sister wanted him to
know you didn't win the race
because you were faster. You won
00:10:57.82\00:11:04.13
just because you got a large
headstart. And, I guess what I'm
saying is that sometimes in the
00:11:04.16\00:11:10.07
black community, we can be very
critical of our colleges and our
churches and our businesses as
00:11:10.10\00:11:16.87
so if we're supposed to be on
the same plane with everybody
else. And the reason that some
00:11:16.91\00:11:22.01
are performing better, is not
because they have superior
people. They've just got a
00:11:22.04\00:11:26.31
50-yard head start. And what I'm
saying is don't just curse our
own. We've got to learn to
00:11:26.35\00:11:29.95
celebrate the progress that
we've made thus far. And I just
want to take a moment to preach
00:11:29.98\00:11:37.56
to those who are in tiny boats.
I want you to know that it
doesn't matter how far you are
00:11:37.59\00:11:39.19
at the back, your latter day is
going to be greater than your
former day and that the end is
00:11:39.23\00:11:41.23
going to be better than the
beginning. Are y'all hearing me
today, Friends? [ Congregation:

Amen] And so go back with me if
you don't mind in your Bibles,
go back to Mark chapter four and

verse 36, and let's unpack the
word together. Mark four in
verse 36. When you get there,
00:11:51.01\00:11:52.77
let me hear you say amen. [
Congregation: Amen] The Bible
says now when he had left the
00:11:52.81\00:11:57.98
multitude, they took him along
in the boat as he was and the
Bible says, and there were other
00:11:58.01\00:12:05.72
little ships with him. Now,
today friends, I don't really
want to focus here on the common
00:12:05.75\00:12:12.33
details of the story. Most of us
have read this and we know that
at the end of the story that
00:12:12.36\00:12:17.77
Jesus is going to stand up and
he's going to calm the storm for
which we are grateful.
00:12:17.80\00:12:22.24
But I want to preach to that
person whose storm is not going
to be over by the benediction.

I want to preach to that soul
that is being overwhelmed by
00:12:29.41\00:12:34.65
life and struggling to find a
sense of their personal
significance in the Lord.

You see, the first thing that
this story teaches us today is
that there is no hierarchy of
00:12:40.39\00:12:49.66
concern in Jesus. I need
somebody to leave with clarity
that there is nobody that Jesus
00:12:49.70\00:12:58.81
loves more than you. Okay, let
me preach to somebody on this
00:12:58.84\00:13:01.38
side. I need somebody to know
that there is nobody more
important to Jesus than the one
00:13:01.41\00:13:13.32
you see in the mirror every day.
Is there anybody that knows that
Christ is no respecter of
00:13:13.36\00:13:17.89
persons and he doesn't care more
about the president or the pope
or the pastor than he does about
00:13:17.93\00:13:27.07
anybody that is created in his
image? Are y'all with me today?
So, notice friends, what
00:13:27.10\00:13:36.24
happens? Jesus says to them, let
us go over to the other side.
Now notice the word says that
00:13:36.28\00:13:42.62
they took him along in the boat
as he was. Now understand Ivan,
that this is the disciples' ego
00:13:42.65\00:13:47.36
at work here. In other words,
the Bible says that there, were
a bunch of other boats that were
00:13:47.39\00:13:53.13
getting ready to take the trip,
but what the disciples do is
they grab a hold of Jesus. To
00:13:53.16\00:14:02.07
make sure he doesn't get in the
boat with nobody else and they
choose the biggest boat for
00:14:02.10\00:14:10.75
themselves. So that on this
journey, Eric, they've got the
superior boat and they're in the
00:14:10.78\00:14:16.69
superior position of being in
the boat with Jesus. Are you
hearing me? And notice that the
00:14:16.72\00:14:25.46
Bible says that there were other
little ships with him. Now this
detail is given for a reason
00:14:25.49\00:14:31.80
Malcolm because too often we
thought this miracle was about
the saving of the 12. But I need
00:14:31.83\00:14:38.17
you to know the miracle is not
just that he sustained those in
the big boat. The miracle is
00:14:38.21\00:14:45.91
that we serve a God that can
sustain people that travel in
little boats. In other words,
00:14:45.95\00:14:52.35
friends, I need you to get that.
If anybody should have been
tripping and scared, it
00:14:52.39\00:14:56.06
shouldn't have been the
disciples in the boat with
Jesus. The ones who should have
00:14:56.09\00:15:04.30
been afraid are those that were
in those little boats where they
couldn't even see where Jesus
00:15:04.33\00:15:11.14
was. But see, I think y'all
missed a point. Notice that the
Bible doesn't say that the ships
00:15:11.17\00:15:17.38
were with them. The Bible says
that these other little ships
were with him. What Mark is
00:15:17.41\00:15:22.32
teaching is that these little
ships were under his authority.
These little ships were under
00:15:22.35\00:15:28.89
his protection. These little
ships were under his watch care.
In other words, we rejoice not
00:15:28.92\00:15:33.76
just because he kept those in
the big boats, but God was
watching over those in the
00:15:33.80\00:15:37.60
little boats. And see, I want to
talk to somebody who feels like
they're lost in this big world.

There is somebody that feels
like they're in a little boat
00:15:43.00\00:15:47.01
financially. There is somebody
that feels like they're in a
small boat emotionally.
00:15:47.04\00:15:51.15
There is somebody that feels
like they're in a small boat
00:15:51.18\00:15:54.58
socially. And what the word is
teaching us today is that there
is no hierarchy of concern in
00:15:54.62\00:16:03.73
Jesus that he loves folk in
little boats the same way he
loves those in the big boats. Is
00:16:03.76\00:16:11.30
there anybody thankful that at
the foot of the cross, the
ground is all level? There are
00:16:11.33\00:16:17.67
no big eyes and small youth, but
we are all loved by Jesus [
Congregation: Amen]

And see, I need us to know that
in Christ there is no hierarchy

of concern because Jesus does
not just end the storm for the
elite. He ends the storm for

those who are in the tiny boat.
And the reason I'm saying this
is I want to encourage somebody
00:16:32.19\00:16:41.66
to stop using your earthly
circumstance as a measuring
stick of your value to God. See,
00:16:41.70\00:16:52.74
I need you to know that the
Bible says that he satisfies the
desire of every living thing.

Jesus says, I dress Solomon, I
dress the Lilly, better than I
dress Solomon on his best day.

And you got to know that if his
eye is on the sparrow, then that
same Jesus is watching over you.

Are y'all with me today friends?
And say, I need somebody to come
to the complete conclusion that

you've got value to God. In
other words, you've heard me say
this often that if you want to

know your value, don't measure
how much you get paid. Measure
how much was paid in order to
00:17:30.61\00:17:37.55
secure your salvation, y'all
missed it. In other words, your
value is not in your bank
00:17:37.59\00:17:42.92
account. Your value is in your
price tag. In other words,
Christ didn't pray more for this
00:17:42.96\00:17:51.30
President than he paid for the
most common sinner. He applied
the same amount of blood to each
00:17:51.33\00:17:55.77
sinner so that we might be
saved. Oh, y'all hearing me
today, friends? And it's crazy

because some of us have anxiety
and fear because we think those
in the bigger boat are safer

than those in a smaller boat.
But I need you to know that in
Christ's size, doesn't matter.

All that matters is that I'm
with him. [ Congregation: Amen]
Oh, God. See those in the little
00:18:09.92\00:18:13.96
boats were safe because they
were with him. Those in the
little boat were safe in the
00:18:13.99\00:18:19.53
storm because they belong to
Jesus. And is there anybody that
understands that even though I
00:18:19.56\00:18:23.80
might be in a little boat, I'm
still with him and I'm going to
be okay because I belong to
00:18:23.83\00:18:30.21
Jesus. Okay. Listen I remember
friends probably about two years
ago there was a mass shooting at
00:18:30.24\00:18:38.11
this one particular mall area
and it was crazy Preston because
there was a mother who was there
00:18:38.15\00:18:43.82
with about eight or nine kids
and she was there in the mall
when they start shooting.
00:18:43.85\00:18:46.65
And so what happens is her
daughter is having a birthday
party and about seven of her
00:18:46.69\00:18:54.30
friends have joined them for the
party. And what the video
footage showed, is that once the
00:18:54.36\00:18:58.47
shooting began, she didn't reach
through the crowd and grab her
00:18:58.50\00:19:02.20
daughter. [
Congregation: Alright alright.]

What she did was, she just
grabbed the closest child and
she got all of the children to
00:19:04.14\00:19:10.31
safety. And when they
interviewed her they asked why
didn't you get your daughter
00:19:10.35\00:19:15.22
first? And she made
something I'll never forget.
00:19:15.25\00:19:18.95
She says that when the parents
put them under my care for those
two hours they received
00:19:18.99\00:19:26.96
adoption. [ Congregation: Amen]

And if they are with me, I'm
going to love them just like
they're my children.

Can I suggest to somebody that
when the shooting starts and
when the mess hits the fan,

that you've received an adoption
by God, and as long as you are
under his care, he's going to
00:19:41.11\00:19:51.92
love you as is you are his own.

The word says to us here as we
get into this text a little bit

deeper, the Bible lets us know
that I need us to get this
thing. So, the storm in this
00:20:00.23\00:20:10.81
situation is about to take these
folk under, and see one of the
things that teaches us is that
00:20:10.84\00:20:20.05
our celebrations need to be
corporate, not just individual.
Now the reason this may seem
00:20:20.08\00:20:24.12
strange is because in our minds
the miracle was always about
Jesus saving the boat with the
00:20:24.15\00:20:30.19
disciples in it. Are y'all still
with me today? But as we said,
the miracle is not just that he
00:20:30.23\00:20:38.03
sustained the big boat in the
storm. The miracle is that he
sustained all the tiny boats all
00:20:38.07\00:20:48.71
night long. So I'm trying to
figure this thing out because
when I look at Matthew's
00:20:48.74\00:20:53.48
version, Matthew says that the
big boat was taking on so much
water that the big boat was
00:20:53.52\00:21:01.79
about to go under. So if the big
boat was about to go under, how
have these little boats made it
00:21:01.82\00:21:10.20
all night long and what it shows
is that not only does Jesus stop
the storm, he moderates the
00:21:10.23\00:21:21.28
storm in the position each boat
is in. So that he moderates
where one boat is so that there
00:21:21.31\00:21:30.62
is not too many ways to overtake
the boat at one time. Oh, y'all
not with me today. In other
00:21:30.65\00:21:34.42
words, he moderates that boat
and he moderates that boat so
that the allowed amount of storm
00:21:34.46\00:21:43.43
is in proportion with what the
boat is able to handle. [
Congregation: Amen]

And see, I need somebody to
understand that Jesus has a way
of not just stopping the storm,
00:21:45.23\00:21:52.14
but he tailors your storm and
moderates your storm so that
whatever touches you is not
00:21:52.17\00:22:03.79
greater than your capacity to
handle it. See, he can moderate
your storm in the middle of a
00:22:03.82\00:22:13.60
storm. So that I need you to
know that even when the economy
is bad, he can moderate your
00:22:13.63\00:22:22.57
storm so that you don't get
taken out, that even when the
pandemic is bad, he can moderate
00:22:22.60\00:22:26.84
your storm. So it does not
overtake you when they are
laying off the job, they can
00:22:26.88\00:22:31.98
moderate your storm so that what
touches them doesn't touch you.
Are y'all hearing the word today

friends? And see, and this is
why friends, I suggest that you
don't learn to stop envying
00:22:34.12\00:22:44.33
people in big boats because big
boats have to go through big
storms. But see he's put you in
00:22:44.36\00:22:56.10
a boat that's commensurate with
your storm. And if you take your
little boat over in the big
00:22:56.14\00:23:04.71
storm, you might get taken out.
And that's why you ought to just
say, Lord, I thank you for my
00:23:04.75\00:23:12.92
boat and where you place me in
the water. Are y'all hearing me
today? So the storm is about to
00:23:12.95\00:23:22.26
take this big boat out. The
disciples are in full panic
mode. And it's crazy because
00:23:22.30\00:23:29.74
Jesus stands up, he rebukes the
winds and the waves and it's
crazy because after he does
00:23:29.77\00:23:39.65
this, he does not, Steven,
comfort, and cuddle the
disciples, he rebukes them. He's
00:23:39.68\00:23:54.93
like, what's wrong with y'all?
Why don't you have any faith? So
then I began a quest to say,

when does their unbelief kick
in? What is the lack of faith
here that Jesus is wrestling
00:24:01.27\00:24:13.82
with? And it's funny because I
need somebody to know that you
will always struggle with faith
00:24:13.85\00:24:23.59
if you only celebrate your
personal victories. See, you'll
miss 95% of the mercies and
00:24:23.63\00:24:30.93
miracles of God if you only
focus on how God is blessing
you. Are y'all with me today?

See, remember I already told you
that the disciples are in the
privileged boat. They've got
00:24:38.87\00:24:46.11
Jesus in the boat with them. So
if anybody should have been
tripping, it should not have
00:24:46.15\00:24:50.99
been them. They're in the boat,
they can see Jesus, the ones
that should have been nervous
00:24:51.02\00:24:54.72
and say, master, don't you care
that we perish are those that
are in the small boats. Now you
00:24:54.76\00:24:57.49
need to get that this storm is
growing progressively worse. It
is intensifying as the night
00:24:57.53\00:25:05.17
goes on. But one of the things
that the disciples should have
taken note of is that all night
00:25:05.20\00:25:11.37
long whenever the lightning
flashed, they could look over
and notice that not a single
00:25:11.41\00:25:16.04
little boat has been lost. Okay,
y'all still hadn't here got here
with me yet. In other words,
00:25:16.08\00:25:21.68
every time they look over, I
don't know how many boats left
with them from the other side. I
00:25:21.72\00:25:27.76
don't know if it was 50 boats or
if it was 30 boats, but every
time they look over the side,
