Sermon #S023 - I'M Out Of Options - Part 1) 00:00:06.13\00:00:19.45 Pastor Snell: As you remain standing, we're going to go to a very familiar text today in Mark 00:00:19.48\00:00:25.69 5. Mark 5, and we'll begin together here in verse 21. Mark 5, and I'll begin reading and 00:00:25.72\00:00:42.27 you're hearing verse number 21. Mark 5:21, when you get there, let me just hear you say, 00:00:42.30\00:00:44.77 "Pastor, I'm ready." Mark 5. That is the second book there in the New Testament. Mark 5, and 00:00:44.81\00:01:00.22 we're beginning together at verse number 21. The Bible says, "Now when Jesus had crossed over 00:01:00.26\00:01:10.67 again by boat to the other side, a great multitude gathered to him and he was by the sea and, 00:01:10.70\00:01:18.81 behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name, and when he saw him, he fell at 00:01:18.84\00:01:27.42 his feet and begged him earnestly saying, 'My daughter lies at the point of...'" What? 00:01:27.45\00:01:34.56 "'Death. Come and lay your hands on her, that she may be healed, and she will live.' So Jesus 00:01:34.59\00:01:39.76 went to him and a great multitude followed him and..." what? Thronged him. There were a 00:01:39.79\00:01:47.27 lot of folks trying to get next to Jesus at this hour. Then the Bible says, Now, a certain woman 00:01:47.30\00:01:56.34 who had a flow of blood for what? Twelve years and had suffered many things from many 00:01:56.38\00:02:03.42 physicians. She spent, what? All that she had. And was no better, but she rather grew what? "And 00:02:03.45\00:02:09.19 when she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment. For she 00:02:09.22\00:02:15.63 said, 'If I may touch his clothes, I shall be made well,' and immediately, the fountain of 00:02:15.66\00:02:19.87 her blood was dried up and she felt in her body that she was healed of that affliction, and 00:02:19.90\00:02:27.78 Jesus, immediately knowing it himself that power had gone out of him, turned around in the 00:02:27.81\00:02:30.88 crowd and said, 'Who touched my clothes?' But his disciples said unto him, you see the multitude 00:02:30.91\00:02:37.32 thronging you and you say, who touched me? And he looked around to see her who had done this 00:02:37.35\00:02:45.59 thing but the woman fearing and trembling knowing what had happened to her, came and fell 00:02:45.63\00:02:56.37 down before him," and told the what? The whole truth and said unto her, "Daughter, your faith 00:02:56.40\00:03:01.81 has made you well, go in peace and be healed of your affliction." But again, I'm 00:03:01.84\00:03:07.55 going to emphasize verse 25. The Bible says, "Now a certain woman who had a flow of blood for 00:03:07.58\00:03:20.10 twelve years and had suffered many things from many physicians, she spent all that 00:03:20.13\00:03:28.67 she had and was not better, but rather she grew worse." Today, saints, I want to talk to you 00:03:28.70\00:03:31.37 for a little while under the subject, "I'm out of options." I'm out of options. Let's pray 00:03:31.41\00:03:52.19 together. Holy Spirit, in this moment of stillness, would you settle some things? Would you 00:03:52.23\00:04:02.57 allow somebody's distractions to be nullified? Would you cause the worries of life to wash away 00:04:02.60\00:04:05.84 that we might be able to hear from you? So, Lord, grant us a spiritual focus. Would you 00:04:05.87\00:04:15.32 capture our attention? And Lord, would you fill this place with your spirit in such a way that 00:04:15.35\00:04:19.35 it smothers all rivaling principalities? So, Lord, in the hearing of the word, may faith 00:04:19.39\00:04:26.36 be multiplied exponentially, hide me in the shadows of the cross that Jesus alone might be 00:04:26.39\00:04:32.10 seen, that Christ alone would be heard, and at the end of our time together made Jesus alone 00:04:32.13\00:04:36.77 be praised. Let Christ be lifted, and I pray that the kingdom of darkness would be 00:04:36.81\00:04:39.27 diminished we pray in the wonderful name of Jesus. Let them that believe say together 00:04:39.31\00:04:41.28 Amen. [Congregation: Amen] And Amen. You may be seated in the house of the Lord today. Again, 00:04:41.31\00:04:48.52 talking briefly under the subject - I'm out of options. I'm going to allow those to slip 00:04:48.55\00:05:05.03 on in and be seated. Author Kyle Idleman wrote a book entitled 00:05:05.07\00:05:15.14 The End Of Me and the fundamental assertion is that human nature is so hardened that 00:05:15.18\00:05:27.96 we will never find Jesus until we come to the end of our own human capacity. It is a scathing 00:05:27.99\00:05:39.63 indictment on human self-sufficiency and because of 00:05:39.67\00:05:45.84 self-sufficiency, most of us will only find Jesus under some type of duress, our bend toward 00:05:45.87\00:05:55.18 and the under-guiding idea is that as long as a person can think it through, figure it out, 00:05:55.22\00:06:01.06 reason their way through, afford it, borrow it, hold it together, they will not choose God. The 00:06:01.09\00:06:12.93 idea is that if a person has grown up without an orientation to faith, he will not choose God 00:06:12.97\00:06:17.07 until he runs out of options. And the truth is that even as people of faith, think about it, 00:06:17.11\00:06:25.91 some of us will not really get serious about praying until there is nothing else that we 00:06:25.95\00:06:31.89 can do. And fundamentally, we will not choose God from one of many different options. Most of 00:06:31.92\00:06:38.83 us will not choose God until he is the only option. And, friends of mine, when options dry up, I 00:06:38.86\00:06:43.80 need you to know that it is not a bad thing. Sometimes running out of options just makes things 00:06:43.83\00:06:49.10 a little bit more clear. In fact, the reason it takes some of us so long to get dressed in 00:06:49.14\00:06:58.15 the morning is we've got too many options in our closets. But the truth is that if you only 00:06:58.18\00:07:06.32 got two suits - a blue one and a black one, choosing the right thing is the easy thing to do 00:07:06.35\00:07:13.23 because you wore the blue suit last week and so you only got one option left. Are y'all 00:07:13.26\00:07:19.87 hearing what the preacher is saying today? And, in fact, the reason that your kids stand 00:07:19.90\00:07:25.67 there with the refrigerator open staring at it, that the reason it takes so long to choose what 00:07:25.71\00:07:35.32 they're going to eat is because there are too many options. But when you're down to that last 00:07:35.35\00:07:37.62 frostbitten Eggo waffle and you're single MorningStar link it pretty much makes the choice 00:07:37.65\00:07:42.39 for you. Are you hearing what I'm saying? In other words, there are some young people that 00:07:42.42\00:07:51.77 don't know what person to choose because they've got too many options, and see sometimes God 00:07:51.80\00:07:59.81 has to remove some of those shiny options so that you'll consider some character options. 00:07:59.84\00:08:04.91 And see, I need somebody to know that the loss of options commences the Genesis of 00:08:04.95\00:08:12.89 conversion because the truth is, we didn't have a lot of options, we had a lot of illusions. In 00:08:12.92\00:08:21.50 other words, all you had was distractions that actually confuse you about where your 00:08:21.53\00:08:30.34 help actually comes from. And I can say this, friends, only with the clarity of hindsight that I 00:08:30.37\00:08:38.45 actually thank God for the times when life crumbled because it was the duress of life that gave 00:08:38.48\00:08:40.08 me clarity about where my help actually comes from. Do I have a witness today? That you will 00:08:40.12\00:08:44.82 never know that Jesus can solve a problem if you've never had a problem. [Congregation: Amen] 00:08:44.85\00:08:50.26 Sometimes it's the flakiness of people that leads you to the faithfulness of God. I would not 00:08:50.29\00:08:55.43 have known that God can heal if I'd never been sick, I would have never known that God can 00:08:55.46\00:09:03.10 provide if I've never had any lack. It was in times of darkness that I learned that he 00:09:03.14\00:09:10.48 is the Rose of Sharon, the bright, and morning star. It is only when friends walked away 00:09:10.51\00:09:20.62 that I came to know that he's the friend that sticks closer than a brother. And sometimes I 00:09:20.66\00:09:27.96 will never choose the best option until I realize he's the only option. And, see, friends 00:09:28.00\00:09:34.04 of mine, I need you to know that maturity takes place when you choose Jesus even when you got 00:09:34.07\00:09:43.21 other options, but you're still immature if you only choose God when there's down to your last 00:09:43.24\00:09:48.85 option. Let me say it this way. See, I remember probably about 14 years ago, I discovered, 00:09:48.88\00:09:57.26 Malcolm, the power of oatmeal. Do I get to witness out here that oatmeal will give you your 00:09:57.29\00:10:04.00 help in the morning? Are y'all hearing me today? But, see, I need you to know that the only 00:10:04.03\00:10:11.67 way I discovered the power of oatmeal was one of those weeks when my wife hadn't gotten a 00:10:11.71\00:10:17.01 chance to go grocery shopping. And so there was no sweet cereal, there were no pastries, 00:10:17.05\00:10:23.75 there were no doughnuts, there were no sausage links, and the only thing left was a box of 00:10:23.79\00:10:32.03 oatmeal and this is crazy. So, I get there, I remember my mom putting a little cinnamon in it 00:10:32.06\00:10:37.63 and I remember how she mixed the milk in just right, and when I put together the oatmeal and ate 00:10:37.67\00:10:39.73 it, I realized, "This tastes better than what I thought it was," and after I ate the 00:10:39.77\00:10:46.71 oatmeal I realized around 10:30, I was still full. I had a little more energy for the day and you 00:10:46.74\00:10:55.62 didn't want to know this but I found myself being more regular, can I get a witness out here 00:10:55.65\00:11:03.39 today? [Congregation: Applause] And it's crazy, friends, that that week I got hooked on the 00:11:03.43\00:11:11.63 power of oatmeal. So that even though I chose it because it was the only option, even when my 00:11:11.67\00:11:20.81 wife went shopping again, I look past the cereal, I would bypass the muffins, I would look past 00:11:20.84\00:11:29.22 the MorningStar because I realized that the only option was actually my best option and 00:11:29.25\00:11:35.89 is there anybody that can give God a Quaker praise today? In other words, God is like 00:11:35.92\00:11:42.96 oatmeal. If you're tasting, you'll see that the Lord is good. If you're stuck with him 00:11:43.00\00:11:51.11 in the morning, you won't be hungry at 11:00. And if you get some Jesus in your soul, you'll 00:11:51.14\00:11:53.58 get regular. Are y'all hearing the word today? We're so consistent because we're on 00:11:53.61\00:12:02.75 honeycombs in and crunch and munch. But when you get some Jesus in your soul and the thing 00:12:02.78\00:12:07.72 I love about Jesus is he doesn't get mad that you wait until he's the last option. He's just glad 00:12:07.76\00:12:14.83 that you decided to choose him somewhere down the line. Are y'all here in the world today? 00:12:14.86\00:12:22.50 [Congregation: Applause] Pastor Snell: And so, friends of mine, as we go back here to Mark 5, I 00:12:22.54\00:12:29.84 want us to look one last time that here at verse number 26, the Bible says, "And this woman 00:12:29.88\00:12:31.55 had suffered many things from many physicians, and she had spent all that she had and was 00:12:31.58\00:12:34.32 not better, but rather she grew worse." And so, friends, I just kind of take a few moments to 00:12:34.35\00:12:43.56 unpack this today. I want to just continue this idea that we espouse because, see, one of the 00:12:43.59\00:12:46.80 things I want somebody to know is that God wants to save somebody today. [Congregation: 00:12:46.83\00:12:53.50 Amen] Pastor Snell: But in order for God to save, our hearts must ripen to a particular place that 00:12:53.54\00:12:57.71 makes it conducive for salvation to take place and, see, one of the things that God is doing for 00:12:57.74\00:13:04.78 somebody today, he's trying to get you to a place where certain things cannot be hidden anymore. 00:13:04.81\00:13:17.39 I knew you were going to get quiet on me but let me kind of unpack it a little bit. The 00:13:17.43\00:13:26.47 Bible says here that you have this woman who has this issue or flow of blood. In fact, scholars 00:13:26.50\00:13:35.24 agree that this woman has a severe and fatal case of what is known as menorrhagia which is 00:13:35.28\00:13:43.95 essentially continual womanly bleeding. In other words, what was supposed to happen once a 00:13:43.99\00:13:45.95 month for this woman is now happening all the time, and, see, people with this condition 00:13:45.99\00:13:53.83 would go to great lengths to cover up the issue because the thing about blood is, especially 00:13:53.86\00:14:02.54 back then, that when it gathers in large portions, it leaves a stain, and when it gathers in 00:14:02.57\00:14:12.75 large portion, it gives off a smell. And so, if you walk by, and you didn't see her issue, if 00:14:12.78\00:14:21.42 you got close enough you might smell the issue. And so what these people do is they would 00:14:21.46\00:14:31.47 wrap themselves in extra garments and they would spray on extra amounts of perfume but 00:14:31.50\00:14:40.38 they didn't realize that often the more they tried to cover the issue, the more they actually 00:14:40.41\00:14:45.81 disclose the issue. And so, I need you to understand this about the disease that it was a 00:14:45.85\00:14:54.82 progressive disorder so that the more the bleeding would occur, the more expensive it would 00:14:54.86\00:15:03.63 become for this woman to try and cover it up. In fact, she doesn't just pay money for 00:15:03.67\00:15:12.14 treatment, she invests a whole lot of money in making sure that other folks don't find out. And 00:15:12.17\00:15:17.61 so she gets to a place, friends, where she's got to stop coming to church to keep people from 00:15:17.65\00:15:24.62 noticing the issue. She's got to avoid some of her friends so that they don't notice the 00:15:24.65\00:15:31.33 issue. She stopped showing up at girls' night because she doesn't want them to notice the issue. 00:15:31.36\00:15:37.10 And as the issue gets worse and worse, it becomes harder and harder to cover it, and she's at 00:15:37.13\00:15:44.81 a place where the concern is not just being healed, she's got a great fear of being outed. So 00:15:44.84\00:15:51.65 that if you saw this sister, you would look at her and say she's standoffish. If you saw her in 00:15:51.68\00:15:59.62 real-time, you would say she got a stank attitude. If you saw her, you would say, man, her 00:15:59.65\00:16:07.03 personality is recluse. You would look at this woman and say, man, she's just a strong 00:16:07.10\00:16:14.30 sister that don't take no mess off of anybody, but that's not really the truth. The reason she 00:16:14.34\00:16:21.64 responds in this way is that for her, it feels safer to remain at a distance than to let people 00:16:21.68\00:16:27.95 know the issue that she wrestles with. And see, friends, I need somebody to hear me today 00:16:27.98\00:16:35.49 because as long as she could cover the issue, she would never have come to Jesus. But now 00:16:35.52\00:16:41.96 she's at a place where she can't afford to hide it no more. She's run out of not just medical 00:16:42.00\00:16:45.23 money, she's run out of perfume money, she's run out of additional garments. In fact, if 00:16:45.27\00:16:51.47 she could keep it composed, if she could hold it together, she would have never ever come to 00:16:51.51\00:16:55.58 Jesus. But now it's at a place where it's so bad that she can't manage the symptoms, she can't 00:16:55.61\00:17:02.12 keep it a secret, and now, this is what drives her back into the community. Are y'all with me 00:17:02.15\00:17:10.33 today, friends? And see the funny thing I need you to know is that sometimes people leave 00:17:10.36\00:17:13.50 the church or they withdraw from fellowship and sometimes they blame it on the community. But 00:17:13.53\00:17:21.14 sometimes, people leave the community simply because they're trying to hide some issues. In 00:17:21.17\00:17:28.78 other words, we can kind of say it is because of the people and the hypocrites in the church. 00:17:28.81\00:17:33.35 But I've literally seen that folks have left the church because they're trying to cover 00:17:33.38\00:17:37.89 a pregnancy that happened before the nuptials took place. I've seen couples leave the church 00:17:37.92\00:17:44.33 because they're trying to hide the fact that the marriage is beginning to fall apart and, 00:17:44.36\00:17:46.80 see, what happens is when we have issues, we become so ashamed of the struggle that 00:17:46.83\00:17:57.51 sometimes we hide and kind of get away from the community. But understand that, for the lady, 00:17:57.54\00:18:07.98 the situation is so desperate that she can't be a prisoner of perception. In other words, it's 00:18:08.02\00:18:14.42 so bad that she can't afford to care what somebody thinks. This thing is so great that she can't 00:18:14.46\00:18:20.63 be a slave to anybody's opinion. She's at a place where she's so desperate for him that she can't 00:18:20.66\00:18:29.64 worry about them. Are y'all with me today, friends? And, see, let me just say this, beloved, that 00:18:29.67\00:18:33.54 sometimes we wrongly allow shame about our issues to drive us away from the church. We allow 00:18:33.58\00:18:39.11 shame about the issues to drive us away from Jesus. But how many of us understand that when you 00:18:39.15\00:18:50.16 look at the scene today, that everybody in the crowd has issues? Pastor Snell: Like real 00:18:50.19\00:19:00.60 talk. Anybody ever had children issues? Anybody ever had marriage issues? Anybody ever 00:19:00.64\00:19:05.57 had moral issues? Anybody ever had financial issues? I need you to know, we didn't come just 00:19:05.61\00:19:12.45 because we love God. Our issues drove us here. And, see, friends of mine, I want to encourage 00:19:12.48\00:19:20.52 somebody that's why you never get intimidated by looking at people from the outside, it's 00:19:20.56\00:19:22.62 cause you can't tell by looking at how we look today. Because the truth is we don't look like 00:19:22.66\00:19:27.76 what we've been through and, see, never get confused by how the preacher looks today because 00:19:27.83\00:19:34.07 all you're seeing today is my after picture. In other words, don't say, "Oh, he got it all 00:19:34.10\00:19:40.24 together." No, you're just seeing the after picture. But is there anybody that's in Christ 00:19:40.28\00:19:46.11 that's got an after picture? But you can shout, don't be fooled, because if you had known me 00:19:46.15\00:19:51.55 then, you would see what great things the Lord can do. Are y'all hearing me today, friends? 00:19:51.59\00:19:59.96 [Congregation: Amen] Okay. This is crazy. Literally, this week, because my kids have kind of 00:20:00.00\00:20:06.94 outgrown their little kid furniture, we have gone through the process of trying to update 00:20:06.97\00:20:14.24 all the furniture in their bedrooms. And so what happened, friends is what happened is my 00:20:14.28\00:20:20.85 daughter's little dresser, we decided we're about to get rid of it, we're going to get ready 00:20:20.88\00:20:27.22 to throw it out because the knobs have come off, there were scratches all over it but then I 00:20:27.26\00:20:33.83 have a sister, Meghan King, who said, "Listen, Pastor and Gianna, don't throw it away. 00:20:33.86\00:20:43.04 Bring it to my house and let me refinish it," and she took it through a process of refinishing 00:20:43.07\00:20:49.71 it and by the time she got done with it, it looked as if it was brand new. No, I need you to see 00:20:49.74\00:20:52.85 that if you just saw it after it was done, you would think that it came that way. But it didn't 00:20:52.88\00:20:58.19 come that way, it was only looking like that after she had finished her work with it. And 00:20:58.22\00:21:03.56 what I'm saying to somebody is don't get fooled by somebody in church. They didn't come that 00:21:03.59\00:21:17.71 way. We had knobs missing, we had debts, we had scratches, we have brokenness but we got in 00:21:17.74\00:21:23.58 the hands of the master refinisher and he didn't just touch us up, he didn't just put 00:21:23.61\00:21:31.69 some paint on but he made us whole in Jesus. Are y'all hearing the word today, friends? 00:21:31.72\00:21:36.86 [Congregation: Applause] So the first thing God has to do is he's got to get us to a place 00:21:36.89\00:21:40.96 where we can't cover that thing no more. The second thing God has to do, friends of mine, is 00:21:40.96\00:21:46.40 he's got to get us to a place, friends of mine, where you get disappointed in the options you 00:21:46.43\00:21:52.24 chose. Now, friends, it's natural for this woman to go to the doctors of her time, right? 00:21:52.27\00:21:59.35 But the Bible says, friends of mine, that she goes to many different physicians. But the 00:21:59.38\00:22:06.55 Bible says that things didn't get better but things actually got worse, that she suffered 00:22:06.59\00:22:14.10 many things of many physicians. Now, I need you to get that in Greek, there is a better 00:22:14.10\00:22:19.60 translation of it, whereas in the King James, it says, she's suffered many things of many 00:22:19.63\00:22:29.34 physicians, but it actually is translated, she suffered many things of many different types 00:22:29.38\00:22:37.45 of physicians. In other words, I need you to get, friends, that this lady is not one that just 00:22:37.49\00:22:44.26 goes through conventional medicine. She is a woman that tries a whole bunch of stuff. In 00:22:44.29\00:22:52.23 other words, he tries a traditional doctor. And when that doesn't work, she tries an 00:22:52.27\00:23:01.78 herbalist. And when that doesn't work, she tries a root doctor. And when that doesn't work, she 00:23:01.81\00:23:08.08 tries a witch doctor. And when that doesn't work, she tries a naturopathic doctor. And when 00:23:08.12\00:23:19.49 that doesn't work, she literally gets to a place where she is physically exhausted. She is 00:23:19.53\00:23:23.97 emotionally exhausted because everything has held out the promise that for a fee, I will 00:23:24.00\00:23:30.84 make you whole. And the Bible says she spent one-half of her earnings on trying to hide it 00:23:30.87\00:23:36.75 and she spent the rest of it trying to be healed, and no matter how many different things 00:23:36.78\00:23:44.22 she tried, there was nothing that could bring relief. She'll get her hopes up, friends of 00:23:44.25\00:23:48.29 mine, only to be disappointed time and time ever again. So this woman tried every doctor. 00:23:48.32\00:23:52.19 She tried every pill. She tried every ointment. She tried every branch of medicine and not only 00:23:52.23\00:23:56.60 is she financially exhausted, she is emotionally exhausted from getting her hopes up only 00:23:56.63\00:24:03.61 to have them disappointed time and time again. But I need you to understand something about 00:24:03.64\00:24:12.35 desperation. See what makes desperation dangerous is it will create an open-mindedness to 00:24:12.38\00:24:18.09 things that can bring you no relief. In other words, being open-minded is not a bad thing 00:24:18.12\00:24:26.13 but be careful about getting so desperate that you begin to open yourself up to options that can 00:24:26.16\00:24:34.80 bring you no help. Are y'all hearing me today, friends? And see, like the woman in the 00:24:34.84\00:24:40.98 story, we've gotten exhausted because we've opened ourselves up, not just to one particular 00:24:41.01\00:24:43.21 thing, we've opened ourselves up to all types of things. And see, the reason some of us have 00:24:43.24\00:24:49.88 broken or have so much brokenness is because we've got some sisters that have opened 00:24:49.92\00:24:57.59 themselves up to all types of men. There are some that have opened themselves to all types 00:24:57.63\00:25:05.73 of women. Some are trying all types of surgeries, some are trying all types of weeds, some 00:25:05.77\00:25:16.88 are trying all types of alcohol, some are trying all types of therapy, some are trying all 00:25:16.91\00:25:29.02 types of churches, some are trying all types of marriages, and what is happening is we're 00:25:29.06\00:25:39.13 trying a type of this and a type of that and life is a sample of a whole gamut of things because 00:25:39.17\00:25:43.17 we are trying to fill a spiritual void with Earthly things, and we get disappointed 00:25:43.20\00:25:49.71 time and time again, and we will never know peace until we realize that we can only be made 00:25:49.74\00:25:56.55 whole in the son of God. In these current times, especially around this time of the year, we find ourselves in 00:26:24.21\00:26:30.15 places where it's difficult to be thankful. No matter how hard you try or how hard you work, 00:26:30.19\00:26:34.99 there's never enough money, never enough grace, or maybe the answers have stopped coming all 00:26:35.02\00:26:42.90 together. In 1st. Thessalonians 5:18. The Bible says in everything, give thanks for this 00:26:42.93\00:26:48.67 is the will of God concerning you. When you choose gratitude you're able to detect God's 00:26:48.70\00:26:52.31 goodness in every circumstance. When you choose gratitude, you're able to regain a lost 00:26:52.34\00:27:00.55 perspective. When you choose gratitude. It is an expression of confidence in God. It's an 00:27:00.58\00:27:09.29 act of faith. And when you choose gratitude, it revives your personal hope.
