So that somebody at home can be blessed with the word, as well. 00:00:56.65\00:01:00.29 Ephesians chapter five in verse two, and then just put your finger over in Luke chapter 00:01:00.32\00:01:06.49 seven in verse 36, which is where we will land today. Ephesians chapter five and verse 00:01:06.53\00:01:13.60 number two, when you get there, just say "Amen". [Congregation: 00:01:13.64\00:01:15.00 Amen] Ephesians chapter five and verse two, the word says and 00:01:15.04\00:01:22.11 walk in what? [Congregation: Love] 00:01:22.14\00:01:23.58 In love as Christ also has loved us and given himself for us, an 00:01:23.61\00:01:34.12 offering and the sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling. What? 00:01:34.16\00:01:39.29 [Congregation: Savor] 00:01:39.33\00:01:40.90 Sweet-smelling savor, your version may say aroma. The Bible says he has loved us. 00:01:40.93\00:01:45.27 Do you realize he loves you? 00:01:45.30\00:01:46.77 [Congregation: Amen] 00:01:46.80\00:01:48.27 No, no. Do you realize he loves you? 00:01:48.30\00:01:50.54 [Congregation: Amen] 00:01:50.57\00:01:52.21 And the Bible says he's given himself for us, a sacrifice, and a sweet-smelling aroma. 00:01:52.24\00:01:58.18 And I go over to Luke chapter seven, and we will look together, beginning at verse 36. 00:01:58.21\00:02:04.25 Luke chapter seven and we will look together at verse number 36 when you get there, just said 00:02:04.29\00:02:12.36 "Pastor, I'm ready". [Congregation: I'm ready 00:02:12.39\00:02:14.30 Pastor.] Luke chapter seven and verse number 36, a very familiar story for many of us. Luke seven 00:02:14.36\00:02:22.30 in verse 36. The Bible says, then one of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him and he went 00:02:22.34\00:02:34.42 to the Pharisee's house and he sat down. Begin the Bible says that one of the Pharisees did 00:02:34.45\00:02:37.55 what? [Congregation: Asked him.] 00:02:37.59\00:02:39.69 Asked him, Bible says he just asked him to eat with him and he went to the Pharisee's house and 00:02:39.72\00:02:46.56 sat down to eat. And behold a woman in the city who was a 00:02:46.59\00:02:50.47 what? [Congregation: Sinner.] 00:02:50.50\00:02:52.03 A sinner. When she knew that Jesus, sat at the table and the 00:02:52.07\00:02:56.91 Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil and stood at His feet behind him 00:02:56.94\00:03:03.68 weeping. And she began to wash his feet with her tears and she wiped them with the hair of her 00:03:03.71\00:03:10.85 head. And she kissed his feet and anointed them with fragrant oil. Now, when the Pharisee who 00:03:10.89\00:03:18.76 had invited him saw this, he spoke to himself saying this man, if he were a prophet would 00:03:18.79\00:03:24.10 know who and what manner a woman this is who is touching him for 00:03:24.13\00:03:31.11 she is a sinner. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Simon, I have something to say 00:03:31.14\00:03:37.21 to you. So he said, teachers, say it and there was a certain creditor who had two debtors who 00:03:37.25\00:03:44.09 owed five hundred denarii and the other 50. And when they had nothing with which to repay, he 00:03:44.12\00:03:50.99 freely forgave them both. Tell me, therefore, which one of them loved him more? Simon answered 00:03:51.03\00:03:58.37 and said I suppose the one whom he what? [Congregation: 00:03:58.40\00:04:00.50 Forgave.] Forgave more and he said unto him, you have rightly judged. Then he turned to the 00:04:00.54\00:04:06.24 woman and said to Simon, do you see this woman? I entered your house and you gave me no water 00:04:06.27\00:04:15.55 for my feet but she is, wash my feet with her tears and wipe them with the hair of her head. 00:04:15.58\00:04:20.16 You gave me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss my feet since the time I came in. 00:04:20.19\00:04:28.23 You did not anoint my head with oil, but this woman has anointed my feet with fragrant oil. 00:04:28.26\00:04:37.77 Therefore, I say to you, her sins which are many are what? [Congregation: Forgiven.] 00:04:37.81\00:04:39.44 Forgiven, for she loved much, but to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little. 00:04:39.47\00:04:44.91 Then he said unto her, your sins are forgiven. 00:04:44.95\00:04:49.72 [Congregation: Amen] 00:04:49.75\00:04:51.12 And those who sat at the table with him began to say to 00:04:51.15\00:04:54.92 themselves, who is this that even forgives sins? Then he said unto the woman, your faith has 00:04:54.96\00:05:06.74 saved you and he says go in peace. But I'm going to read for emphasis, verse number 38. And 00:05:06.77\00:05:15.91 she stood at His feet behind him weeping, and she began to wash his feet with her tears, and she 00:05:15.94\00:05:24.12 wiped them with the hair of her head. Today, saints, I want to talk to you for a little while 00:05:24.15\00:05:32.19 under the subject. Let your hair down. Let your hair down. Let's 00:05:32.23\00:05:34.60 pray together. Father, I pray that you would do something that is unfamiliar, through a story 00:05:34.63\00:05:49.71 that for some of us is very familiar. I pray that in the midst, or despite fallen 00:05:49.74\00:06:00.52 humanity that you would allow the love of Christ to rain through in this message. So, 00:06:00.56\00:06:07.20 Father, I pray that you would hide me in the shadows of the cross, that Jesus alone might be 00:06:07.23\00:06:13.64 seen. That Christ alone would be heard and at the end of our time together may Jesus alone be 00:06:13.67\00:06:21.18 praised. Would you multiply the presence of your spirit in this place? Would you overwhelm all 00:06:21.21\00:06:30.12 evil? And would you lose the bound? Lord, would you uplift the downtrodden? And Lord may 00:06:30.15\00:06:36.99 the soul who is under the weight of sins, despair, and condemnation, find their freedom 00:06:37.03\00:06:39.59 and their liberty in you. We pray this in the wonderful name of Jesus. Let them that believe 00:06:39.63\00:06:41.86 say together, amen. [Congregation: Amen] And amen. You may be seated in the house 00:06:41.90\00:06:53.78 of the Lord. Again, we're talking today under the subject. Let your hair down. You know 00:06:53.81\00:07:05.99 friends, here we find Jesus in a formal dinner setting of sorts. And you must know that at this 00:07:06.02\00:07:19.40 point, Jesus is the most sought-after person on the face of the planet And yet somehow 00:07:19.43\00:07:28.74 this Pharisee, Simon is able to get Jesus, to come to his house. And this shows, one of the 00:07:28.78\00:07:37.12 indiscriminate qualities of Jesus because Jesus does not charge an appearance fee. Simon 00:07:37.15\00:07:43.56 doesn't have to make a contribution to the building fund. Jesus shows up the Bible 00:07:43.59\00:07:50.70 says, simply because the Pharisee invited him. And the first thing, this teaches us 00:07:50.73\00:07:59.67 friends is that Jesus goes wherever he is invited. You see, all the Pharisee did was ask for 00:07:59.71\00:08:04.35 Jesus to come, and I can imagine that there's all type of speculation, as to how this 00:08:04.38\00:08:12.35 Pharisee got Jesus to attend. And understand that in order to have Jesus come and a newly 00:08:12.39\00:08:20.96 resurrected Lazarus at the table. It is raising the social profile of this Pharisee that 00:08:21.00\00:08:24.50 has invited him to come. And so folk begin to wonder, how he got Jesus to come to his house. They 00:08:24.53\00:08:33.51 begin to wonder what amount did he pay and who was his connection or plug? That got 00:08:33.54\00:08:43.08 Jesus to come to this occasion and I can see them pulling Simon into a corner as they begin to 00:08:43.12\00:08:49.22 request the hook up so that Jesus can come to their house. They want to know who is your 00:08:49.26\00:08:55.10 connect, that got you into the inner circle of Jesus. They want to know what angle did you come 00:08:55.13\00:09:02.34 from in order to get Jesus to show up. And it's amazing that they are frustrated because they 00:09:02.37\00:09:09.71 think that Simon is withholding the goods from them. But the truth is like Simon is saying I 00:09:09.74\00:09:12.35 didn't pay a certain amount, I didn't go through a booking agent, I didn't give a certain 00:09:12.38\00:09:16.95 amount of money. He came simply because I invited him to come, and Simon wants them to know 00:09:16.99\00:09:27.03 that the favor he has received is simply the result of a request made unto Jesus. And the 00:09:27.10\00:09:35.00 reason this is important is because there are times when we see people experiencing divine 00:09:35.04\00:09:43.14 favor. We see folk experiencing professional favor or financial favor or academic favor. And we 00:09:43.18\00:09:49.42 think that they have an agency that we don't have access to, but I need somebody to know that 00:09:49.45\00:09:57.06 favor with Jesus is not earned. It cannot be coerced, it's not the result of human association. 00:09:57.09\00:10:07.77 You get divine favor when you simply invite Jesus into the presence of your life. Can I say 00:10:07.80\00:10:14.31 to somebody that if you want, supernatural and unrealistic favor, all you've got to do is 00:10:14.34\00:10:24.59 make your requests known unto God? In other words, you ain't got to know somebody that knows 00:10:24.62\00:10:33.93 somebody. In fact, what Jesus came to do was to dispatch with the need of a third party. In 00:10:33.96\00:10:41.70 other words, in order to get to Jesus, I'm thankful that I don't need a mediator. I don't need an 00:10:41.74\00:10:52.58 intercessor, I can go directly to the source and make my request known unto God. Is there 00:10:52.61\00:10:54.18 anybody that knows that the Bible says you have not simply because you ask not? 00:10:54.22\00:10:59.09 [Congregation: Amen] The word says that if we being evil know how to give good gifts to our 00:10:59.12\00:11:06.23 children, Jesus says, how much more willing am I to give good things to them that simply ask? 00:11:06.26\00:11:13.44 Isaiah 66 says it will come to pass that before you call he'll already answer. And while you're 00:11:13.47\00:11:20.41 yet speaking, he's already heard. I love what the Psalmist says in Psalm 116. He says I 00:11:20.44\00:11:31.52 love the Lord because he heard my cry and he inclined his ear unto me, and as long as I live, 00:11:31.55\00:11:41.10 I will call upon his name. And I guess Church, what I want to do is rebuke all politicking, stop 00:11:41.13\00:11:49.60 all the secular hustling, stop trying to cozy up to important people, stop all the deal-making 00:11:49.64\00:11:58.08 because that can only get you so far. But if you want the supernatural, if you want the 00:11:58.11\00:12:06.12 exceeding abundantly, stop trying to get close to a man and make your requests known to God. 00:12:06.15\00:12:07.89 Your favor is just an ask away. [Congregation: Amen] Let me, let me say it this way. I remember 00:12:07.92\00:12:11.66 the first time I met Pastor Wintley Phipps Dave. Both he and I were preaching in as the 00:12:11.69\00:12:17.10 parables would say a certain place, and I remember as we were coming in on the same flight, 00:12:17.13\00:12:21.10 the conference sent the same taxi to pick us up and take us 00:12:21.14\00:12:26.57 to our hotel. And so he asked us where we were staying and I gave him the name of the place 00:12:26.61\00:12:31.65 and he and his baritone voice just begin to laugh because he knew what type of establishment 00:12:31.68\00:12:38.85 it was. And so before we knew it, we begin to wind up at this very plus, the greatest hotel 00:12:38.89\00:12:46.76 there in the country. And I said, Elder, how did you wind up 00:12:46.80\00:12:50.83 here? And he says, Pastor, you're going to learn growing up that if you want a certain type 00:12:50.87\00:12:55.64 of thing, you've got to ask and let folk know what you need because 99% of where you go is 00:12:55.67\00:13:04.18 where you stay. And so we get to the establishment where we are staying and I need you to know 00:13:04.21\00:13:10.95 that when we walked into the lobby, I knew we were in trouble because they didn't give us a 00:13:10.99\00:13:17.43 keycard, they gave us a metal key to the room. And then when we got to the room, there was an 00:13:17.46\00:13:23.83 overpowering fish smell that met us at the door. And then, when my wife went into the bathroom, 00:13:23.87\00:13:32.27 she found the hair on the sink from the previous guests before we got there. Now, normally 00:13:32.31\00:13:39.78 saints I would have tried to rough this thing out, but how many of us know that if mama 00:13:39.81\00:13:47.29 ain't happy, guess what? And nobody going to be happy and so that night after I'm finished 00:13:47.32\00:13:56.26 preaching. I got ready to make my request known. I had a speech and all the reasons why and as I 00:13:56.30\00:14:02.87 went to the host, I said listen, man, can you move me to the next hotel? And before I got a chance 00:14:02.90\00:14:09.98 to give all the reasons why I should, he says, Pastor surely, we will move you and we will 00:14:10.01\00:14:11.88 grant your request. And so a couple of days later, I ran into Elder Phipps, he says, sir, what 00:14:11.91\00:14:17.79 happened? How did you get here? I says, I just took your advice and made my request known. I got 00:14:17.82\00:14:25.66 what I asked for. And how many of us know that when you make your requests known unto God? 00:14:25.69\00:14:30.40 That God is going to grant the request of his children. And saint, let me just pause to say 00:14:30.43\00:14:37.67 to some of us that sometimes we overthink religion, and sometimes we add stipulations 00:14:37.71\00:14:43.98 that are not in the scripture. See the Bible says, friends that he goes to the Pharisee's house, 00:14:44.01\00:14:52.42 simply because he invited him. Now, as I looked at this, I initially begin to feel a 00:14:52.45\00:14:58.13 certain type of way because when I looked at how Pharisees moved and how they begin to relate to 00:14:58.16\00:15:04.93 certain people, I begin to wonder why Jesus would even go and spend time with a 00:15:04.97\00:15:13.27 self-righteous Pharisee. But how many of us know that the beauty of the gospel is simultaneously 00:15:13.31\00:15:24.49 the offense of the gospel in that Jesus goes to whoever invites him to come? The reason 00:15:24.52\00:15:32.39 Jesus ate with sinners is because they invited him to come. The reason he eats with 00:15:32.43\00:15:41.90 Publicans is because they invited him to come. The reason he sat down with uptight Martha 00:15:41.94\00:15:44.47 was because she invited him to come. The reason he would sit with the Pharisees is because 00:15:44.51\00:15:50.35 they invited him to come. And I guess church I'm trying to make 00:15:50.38\00:15:53.52 this simple. The good news for somebody today is that if you want Christ operating in your 00:15:53.55\00:15:59.59 life. All you've got to do is give an invitation for him to 00:15:59.62\00:16:07.13 show up. And see I need somebody to know that Jesus is not going to strong-arm his way into your 00:16:07.13\00:16:14.94 life. In fact, I need you to know the door has to be opened and he's got to be welcomed in. 00:16:14.97\00:16:21.31 He says behold I stand at the door and knock, and if you open up the door, I'll come in and 00:16:21.34\00:16:32.72 sit with you and you with me, I guess what I'm saying teachers is that if you want Christ in 00:16:32.75\00:16:41.50 your classroom, all you've got to do is invite him in. Couples, if you want Jesus in the 00:16:41.53\00:16:48.10 marriage, you've just got to daily invite him in. Young folk, if you want Christ in your 00:16:48.14\00:16:54.04 relationship, you've got to invite him in. And I guess the inverse is true, that if there 00:16:54.08\00:17:02.88 is a deficit of the presence of Christ more than likely it's because he's not been invited. 00:17:02.92\00:17:10.99 In other words, if you don't invite him to oversee your business, he's not going to grab 00:17:11.03\00:17:14.30 the wheel without consent and God is saying that I'm just looking for an invitation to be 00:17:14.36\00:17:22.74 a part of your entire experience. Are you with me today? And she understands the 00:17:22.77\00:17:32.11 other reason that some may not be experiencing the full presence of Jesus Christ is 00:17:32.15\00:17:37.82 because too many of us compartmentalize our religion. In other words, we have a box 00:17:37.85\00:17:44.89 for our spirituality that we reserve on the weekend. We've got a box for our work. We've 00:17:44.93\00:17:52.40 got a box for our academic life. We've got a box for our social life. We've got a box for our 00:17:52.43\00:18:00.81 work life, but the problem is we don't allow one to bleed over into the next, but you've got to 00:18:00.84\00:18:07.35 get to a place friends where you don't just put Jesus in a religious box. You've got to 00:18:07.38\00:18:17.49 allow Jesus to be Lord and touch every level and every compartment of your human 00:18:17.53\00:18:20.40 experience. Are you hearing me today friends? In other words, we want to keep Jesus in the 00:18:20.43\00:18:28.10 glass box that we only break in the case of emergencies. But you've got to get to a place 00:18:28.14\00:18:34.68 where Jesus becomes 411, not just 911. [Congregation: Amen] 00:18:34.71\00:18:36.41 You've got to let Jesus into your work, you've got to let Jesus into your dating. 00:18:36.44\00:18:41.22 You've got to let Jesus oversee every particular portion of your life. Are you hearing me today, 00:18:41.25\00:18:48.22 friends? And in fact, let me say it this way. How many of us in this space are old enough that 00:18:48.26\00:18:56.50 before central air conditioning? Do you remember the days of the window unit? Anybody remember 00:18:56.53\00:19:04.24 those old-school window units? Maybe you don't have to be old enough. Maybe just broke enough 00:19:04.27\00:19:08.21 you all hearing me today? And it's crazy because those window units would cool the room that 00:19:08.24\00:19:13.92 you were in. But guess what, they could not cool the entire house and so if you are hot on 00:19:13.95\00:19:20.99 the other side, you had to go where the unit was in order to get some relief. And see that's 00:19:21.02\00:19:29.90 why I'm thankful for central air conditioning and heating because when the unit is central to the 00:19:29.93\00:19:38.67 house, you don't have to leave one room to go to the next to get well. It sets relief to 00:19:38.71\00:19:48.32 whatever room you are in. And what I'm saying to somebody today is stop making Jesus the 00:19:48.35\00:19:58.73 window unit. You've got to make Jesus central to your life. And when Jesus is central to the 00:19:58.76\00:20:05.90 house, he can bless whatever room you are in. You ain't got to go from one room to the next, 00:20:05.93\00:20:12.51 but he'll send blessings to the kitchen. He'll bless the living room. He'll bless the classroom. 00:20:12.54\00:20:20.88 He'll bless the bedroom. He'll bless the dining room. When he is central to everything in your 00:20:20.92\00:20:25.09 existence. Are you hearing me today, friends? And so, the Bible says to us here in Luke 00:20:25.12\00:20:36.30 chapter six in verse 37. The Bible says, behold a woman in the city who was a sinner when 00:20:36.33\00:20:41.87 she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster flask 00:20:41.90\00:20:49.41 of fragrant oil, the Bible says. You see the second thing this story teaches us friends of mine 00:20:49.44\00:20:53.48 is that true holiness receives. It doesn't repel. Okay, let me say to you all on this side, 00:20:53.52\00:21:07.46 that real righteousness receives sinners. It does not reject or repel sinners. You see, friends, 00:21:07.50\00:21:12.90 Christ is the centerpiece of this particular occasion and it's amazing that the Bible says 00:21:12.93\00:21:23.88 that there is a woman who is a sinner who finds her way to Jesus in the house. And 00:21:23.91\00:21:33.69 understand that when Luke describes her as a sinner, this is not a reference to her fallen 00:21:33.72\00:21:42.93 human nature. What he is telling here is that she is a notorious sinner, that she has a 00:21:42.96\00:21:49.64 reputation for being a sinner. In fact, both the Greeks and scholars suggest that she was 00:21:49.67\00:21:56.54 notorious in such a way because she was probably a harlot or somebody that worked in the sex 00:21:56.58\00:22:03.35 trade for a living. And you got to get how awkward this situation is because when she 00:22:03.39\00:22:14.30 walks into this room, she is avoided by the men that have visited her and she is reviled 00:22:14.30\00:22:27.04 by the women whose men she has shared. And so you got to get that to hang with a group of 00:22:27.08\00:22:35.28 Pharisees, this is not her crowd. That she brings tension to the room, not by what she 00:22:35.32\00:22:42.02 does, but it's made awkward just because of who she is. And see what Luke describes is a 00:22:42.06\00:22:49.73 situation where Jesus does not invite her in, but she has been monitoring or tracking Christ's 00:22:49.76\00:23:01.11 movements. She has been stalking his location, and the Bible says that she comes for him even when 00:23:01.14\00:23:08.65 Jesus does not send for her, and what Jesus does in this story, what it does is it's got me 00:23:08.68\00:23:24.67 rethinking the way that I see holiness. I mean, is anybody seeing this amazing contrast in 00:23:24.70\00:23:31.84 the room? That the woman who is sinful is drawn to a God who is sinless. That a woman of 00:23:31.87\00:23:38.58 complete filth is attracted to a God of complete holiness. That the one who is a commandment 00:23:38.61\00:23:47.39 breaker is drawn to the commandant giver. That the one who only knows sin is drawn to 00:23:47.42\00:23:53.53 the God who knows no sin. And isn't it crazy saints, that she is made to feel uncomfortable by 00:23:53.56\00:23:55.66 everybody but Jesus? [Congregation: Clapping] Oh yeah, you hear me. In other 00:23:55.70\00:24:03.94 words, man, she is intimidated by the Pharisees, but she is received by Jesus. She is looked 00:24:03.97\00:24:13.42 down upon by the other women, but she is welcomed by Jesus. She is inspected by everybody 00:24:13.45\00:24:24.36 else, but she is received by Jesus. She is made to feel unworthy by everybody in the 00:24:24.39\00:24:31.47 room but Jesus. And see this got me rethinking friends of mine on how I see holiness and how it 00:24:31.50\00:24:42.98 functions because see, I used to think that the chief attribute of holiness was its sternness 00:24:43.01\00:24:48.12 and disability to indict or intimidate sinners. Is there anybody that remembers the old 00:24:48.15\00:24:54.66 paradigm of how we talked about holiness in the church? Because most of us, real talk are still 00:24:54.69\00:25:01.30 intimidated by the word holiness. Because we were talked that sin cannot stand in the 00:25:01.33\00:25:03.40 presence of a holy God. [Congregation: Clapping] And see, if sin cannot stand in the 00:25:03.43\00:25:13.84 presence of a holy God, that must mean Christ is not God. In other words, Paul says that in 00:25:13.88\00:25:18.98 him dwelt the fullness of the Godhead bodily. In fact, the primary accusation against 00:25:19.01\00:25:28.46 Christ was that this man receives sinners and he eats with them. How do I know that 00:25:28.49\00:25:37.27 Jesus is God? In John one, the Bible says in the beginning, was the word and the word was with 00:25:37.30\00:25:43.64 God, and the Word was God, and the Word became flesh and it dwelt amongst us. In other 00:25:43.67\00:25:53.82 words, you realize that the primary reason that Jesus came wasn't just to die on a sinner's 00:25:53.85\00:26:03.99 cross. Jesus had to come in human form to show us what God was actually like. You see 00:26:04.03\00:26:12.93 friends, I thought true holiness intimidated sinners. I thought it rejected sinners. I thought 00:26:12.97\00:26:17.94 it inspected sinners. I thought it indicted sinners. I thought it ran sinners away, but we see 00:26:17.97\00:26:26.21 no such thing in the holiest one to ever walk on the face of the planet Earth. Is there anybody 00:26:26.25\00:26:33.99 that's thankful that the Holy One did not reject sinners? But he welcomed Tax Collectors, he 00:26:34.02\00:26:45.60 sat down with prostitutes. He received the ungodly. He says all that come unto me, I will in 00:26:45.63\00:26:56.41 no wise cast them out. And let me just say this with all the bonus I can muster up that if 00:26:56.44\00:27:03.45 your religion repels, indicts, inspects, or reject sinners, it is not the religion of Jesus 00:27:03.49\00:27:05.95 Christ. Read your Bible today, Saints. Did you notice something about Jesus preaching that Jesus 00:27:05.99\00:27:17.83 spent more time rebuking self-righteousness than unrighteousness? In other words, 00:27:17.87\00:27:24.07 I need you all to understand that our savior was dealing with matters of the heart. So he was 00:27:24.11\00:27:32.05 not walking around inspecting makeup and skirt lengths, and tattoos and what you were 00:27:32.08\00:27:38.45 wearing. Jesus preached that transformation and not standards.
