Sermon #S018 - (I'm Good - Part 1) 00:00:05.83\00:00:20.08 Pastor Snell: I would invite you to go with me in your Bibles to the Book of Matthew chapter 20, 00:00:20.12\00:00:23.05 and we're going to begin together at verse number one. Let me just ask by show of 00:00:23.08\00:00:34.66 hands. How many of us have just a perfect, perfect life, perfect existence going on right now? 00:00:34.73\00:00:41.64 I notice ain't nobody raised their hand. There's nobody that has a perfect experience or 00:00:41.67\00:00:48.94 perfect circumstance. But how many of us know that when you have Godly contentment, you can 00:00:48.98\00:00:55.25 have a perfect disposition? Do I have a witness today? So I can't control everything that's going 00:00:55.28\00:00:59.59 on around me, but guess what, I can manage with God's help what's happening inside of me. 00:00:59.62\00:01:04.66 Are you all with me today, Saints? And so, I want us to look at a very familiar Parable 00:01:04.69\00:01:08.70 and we want to share some things with you as we go into the Word 00:01:08.73\00:01:13.40 today. Matthew 20:1, when you get there just say "Pastor, I'm here." Matthew 20:1. 00:01:13.44\00:01:22.48 I give careful attention to the reading of the word today. 00:01:22.51\00:01:26.78 In fact, I want you to know this is going to be a text that I'll come back and revisit at some 00:01:26.82\00:01:31.89 time in the future because I actually have more sermon than I have time to really share with 00:01:31.92\00:01:36.19 you today, but there's just some rich truth for the people of God. Matthew 20:1, again, when 00:01:36.22\00:01:43.57 you get there, just say Amen. Jesus speaking says, "For the kingdom of heaven is like a 00:01:43.60\00:01:57.95 landowner who went out early in the morning to hire labourers for his vineyard. Now when he 00:01:57.98\00:02:09.99 had agreed with the labourers for denarius a day, he sent them into the vineyard. He went out 00:02:10.03\00:02:16.77 about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the marketplace and said to them, 00:02:16.80\00:02:24.24 "You also go into the vineyard and whatever is right I will give you." So they went and 00:02:24.27\00:02:33.21 again, he went out about the sixth hour and the ninth hour and did likewise. About the 00:02:33.25\00:02:40.59 eleventh hour, he went out and found others standing idle. Standing what? Idle, they're 00:02:40.62\00:02:49.00 idle, they're not doing anything. And said unto them, "Why have you been standing here 00:02:49.03\00:02:55.27 idle all day?" They said unto him because no one hired us, and he said unto them, "You also go 00:02:55.30\00:02:59.54 into the vineyard and whatever is right, you will receive." So when evening had come, the owner 00:02:59.57\00:03:05.61 of the vineyard said to the steward, "Call the labourers and give them their wages beginning 00:03:05.65\00:03:14.76 with the last to the first." When those who came and were hired about the eleventh hour, 00:03:14.79\00:03:21.73 they each receive a denarius. When the first came, they supposed that they would receive 00:03:21.76\00:03:26.30 what? They assume they should have received more than everybody else, and they 00:03:26.33\00:03:38.85 likewise received each a denarius. When they had received it, they did complain against 00:03:38.88\00:03:47.76 the landowner saying "These last men have worked only one hour and you have made them equal to 00:03:47.79\00:03:55.26 us who have borne the burden and the heat of the day?" But he answered one of them and said, 00:03:55.30\00:04:07.31 "Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what is 00:04:07.34\00:04:16.95 yours and go your way. I wish to give the last men the same as you. Is it not lawful for me to 00:04:16.99\00:04:27.13 do what I wish with my own things?" There's a very, very pertinent question. He asked, 00:04:27.13\00:04:35.87 "Or is your eye evil because I'm good?" And so, the last will be first and the first will be last 00:04:35.90\00:04:44.18 for many are called, but few are chosen." Again, for emphasis, I want to read verse 11. When they 00:04:44.21\00:04:52.35 received it, the Bible says they complained against the landowner. Today, Saints, for 00:04:52.39\00:04:58.36 just a little while, I just want to talk under the sermon title "I'm Good". Turn to your 00:04:58.39\00:05:06.50 neighbor, give him a fist bump and say, "I'm good". Now turn to them and ask a question. Are you 00:05:06.53\00:05:17.51 good? Because I'm good. Amen. Amen. Let's look to the Lord together in prayer. Father, I 00:05:17.55\00:05:22.98 pray that in this little while that you would say much. And perhaps, Father, there are parts 00:05:23.02\00:05:27.56 of the service that are familiar. We understand the liturgy. We know when the song 00:05:27.59\00:05:30.36 is going to come in, when the prayer is going to be prayed. But Lord, I pray that we would 00:05:30.39\00:05:40.37 not become so familiar with how things go that we leave no room for a special visitation of your 00:05:40.40\00:05:49.78 spirit. And so, Father, would you make thyself so dense in this place that you smother and 00:05:49.81\00:05:54.45 overwhelm all rivaling principalities? Father, once again, I pray that faith will be 00:05:54.48\00:06:01.49 multiplied in the hearing of the Word. Lord, would you hide me in the shadow of the cross that 00:06:01.52\00:06:06.70 Jesus alone might be seen, that Christ alone would be heard, and at the end of our time together, 00:06:06.73\00:06:12.27 may Jesus alone be praised. We ask this in the name of Him who is altogether lovely. It is in 00:06:12.30\00:06:18.64 the name of Jesus that we pray. Let God's people say together. Amen. And amen. You may be 00:06:18.67\00:06:26.55 seated here in the presence of the Lord. You know, friends, my very first time patronizing the 00:06:26.58\00:06:40.63 Cheesecake Factory was in 2000 at the Michigan Avenue location in Chicago, Illinois. After we 00:06:40.66\00:06:50.01 arrived, after a lengthy wait in line, they were able to seat us in close proximity to the 00:06:50.04\00:06:55.38 kitchen. Our server handed us a menu and made some particular 00:06:55.41\00:07:01.25 recommendations. After a little while in culinary deliberation, we eventually decided to place 00:07:01.28\00:07:08.76 our order. But the problem is that whenever you are seated next to the kitchen, 00:07:08.79\00:07:12.99 you are able to see every dish that somebody orders as it is being taken to their table. 00:07:13.03\00:07:21.64 As I saw all the dishes coming out, I developed a serious case of food order envy, 00:07:21.67\00:07:29.58 where you see so many good dishes going back and forth that you begin to second-guess the 00:07:29.61\00:07:38.59 very thing that you ordered. You all know what I'm talking about today. And so, I would see the 00:07:38.62\00:07:46.46 fried mac and cheese balls and I would change my mind. I would see the factory nachos come out 00:07:46.49\00:07:54.44 and again, I would change my mind. I would see the tower of onion rings and I would change 00:07:54.47\00:08:02.24 my mind. And eventually, our server grew impatient with my ambivalence and said, "Sir, 00:08:02.28\00:08:09.25 you're making a mistake with the way you're going about it." She said something I'll never 00:08:09.28\00:08:17.26 forget. She says, "You've got to choose based on the menu not what you see. You need to choose 00:08:17.29\00:08:20.13 based on the ingredients and not the final presentation." She reminded me that the options 00:08:20.16\00:08:29.50 you're now coveting are the ones that you bypass when you were looking at the menu. She says 00:08:29.54\00:08:34.81 you've got to get to a place where you're just good with what you ordered, because you're 00:08:34.84\00:08:40.08 always going to see something that looks good passing by. Can I suggest today, friends, that 00:08:40.12\00:08:48.19 the key to greater contentment is when you get to the place where you can just say, "God, 00:08:48.22\00:08:56.73 I'm good with what I have already ordered", because life can be like a trip to the 00:08:56.77\00:09:05.91 restaurant because you automatically devalue what you've had because you pay so 00:09:05.94\00:09:16.62 much attention to things that are passing by. Can I suggest, friends, that freedom is not the 00:09:16.65\00:09:24.33 ability to change your mind but freedom is the discipline to settle your mind. Because the 00:09:24.36\00:09:30.20 discipline of contentment is the ability to say "God, I'm good with what I have." You see, how 00:09:30.23\00:09:34.97 many of us know contentment doesn't come when you have everything you want? Contentment 00:09:35.00\00:09:43.75 comes when you want what you already have. See, I need somebody to know that you got to 00:09:43.78\00:09:53.02 be loose from the habit of comparing what you have with somebody else. Do you realize 00:09:53.05\00:10:00.10 that certain things will appeal not because they're better than what you have, they will appeal 00:10:00.13\00:10:09.24 simply because it's different and unfamiliar than what you already possess? Can I say 00:10:09.27\00:10:12.64 today, brothers, that you've got to be thankful for the woman you have because there will always 00:10:12.67\00:10:18.28 be another pretty face passing by? In other words, ladies, you've got to be content with 00:10:18.31\00:10:26.59 what you have because there will always be another handsome man or accomplished man passing by. 00:10:26.62\00:10:34.93 There will always be a newer version of some device. There will always be another model of 00:10:34.93\00:10:42.24 a vehicle. The institution across town will seem superior to what you have. There will 00:10:42.27\00:10:49.58 always be a better-paying job, another new store, something that says that you need 00:10:49.61\00:10:56.42 something different than what you have. But the greatest blessing in life, my friends, is 00:10:56.45\00:11:02.59 when you just get to the place where you can say "God, I'm good with what you have given me and 00:11:02.62\00:11:11.73 where you are moving in my life." Do I have about seven or eight Saints in the room that 00:11:11.77\00:11:17.97 can just say, "Lord, I am thankful and I am good with where you are operating in my 00:11:18.01\00:11:24.65 personal experience"? In other words, do I have any folks that can just say, "Lord, I'm good 00:11:24.68\00:11:29.28 with the age I am." In other words, I'm not in a hurry to get older, I'm not trying to relive 00:11:29.32\00:11:34.56 my teens or my twenties. I am thankful for the wisdom that God has given me in this season." Is 00:11:34.59\00:11:43.13 there anybody that's can say "I'm just good with the way that I look"? Do you realize that you 00:11:43.16\00:11:48.57 are fearfully and wonderfully made, you don't have to nip or a tuck or bleach or dye, you 00:11:48.60\00:11:56.54 realize you got it going on in Jesus name? Are you all with me today, Saints? Listen, this 00:11:56.58\00:12:03.45 morning I looked in the mirror and said to myself, "Bald is beautiful and dark is lovely." 00:12:03.49\00:12:10.53 Are you all with the pastor in this room? Is there anybody that can say, "I'm good with my 00:12:10.56\00:12:18.40 spouse. I'm good with my house. I'm good with my problems. I'm good with my job." You don't 00:12:18.43\00:12:25.54 need to spend a whole lot of time trying to study where everyone else is and what they 00:12:25.57\00:12:28.78 already have. The greatest blessing is when you've got Godly contentment that allows 00:12:28.81\00:12:37.22 you to be good where you are. In fact, let me testify in this way. I need you to know this 00:12:37.25\00:12:46.33 about your pastor that I'm so good in Christ that I would not change places with anybody else 00:12:46.36\00:12:54.84 on this Earth. Let me be clear, my life is not perfect. I've got problems like everybody else but 00:12:54.87\00:13:01.91 I'm good with my wife, I'm good with my kids. I don't want your problems so I'm good with mine. 00:13:01.94\00:13:10.15 Is there anybody that's so thankful where God has you, that you're not trying to trade 00:13:10.19\00:13:12.02 places? You don't need an upgrade. You just going to stand still and be good with where God 00:13:12.05\00:13:14.16 is moving in. Are you all hearing me today, friends? [Congregation: Amen] And so, 00:13:14.19\00:13:20.33 friends, as we go deeper into this, let me just give you a sermonic roadmap of where we're 00:13:20.36\00:13:26.67 going to go. I want to first begin just communicating some missional, our Evangelistic 00:13:26.70\00:13:31.61 principles. Second, I want us to see some salvific content in the text, and then I want to just 00:13:31.64\00:13:39.51 conclude talking about the need for us to experience greater spiritual contentment. If you're 00:13:39.55\00:13:41.62 with me, let me hear you say amen. [Congregation: Amen] 00:13:41.65\00:13:42.65 Now one of the things you need to know, friends, 00:13:42.68\00:13:44.75 about this parable is that this parable has what you would call "dual implication", 00:13:44.79\00:13:51.33 meaning that this is extremely relevant for those who are hearing Christ teach it, 00:13:51.36\00:13:57.77 but it has prophetic relevance for those who are living even in 00:13:57.80\00:14:03.91 our time. In fact, friends, that this parable prophesize what will be happening in the church 00:14:03.94\00:14:13.92 at the eleventh hour just before the close of God's work. It's amazing because Jesus here 00:14:13.95\00:14:24.89 describes the parable of a man who is an owner of a vineyard, but then he describes a scenario 00:14:24.93\00:14:34.47 where he does not have enough servants in the house so that he must go out and hire day labor 00:14:34.50\00:14:43.51 in order to get the work complete. Now, you remember that day labor work only for the 00:14:43.55\00:14:49.35 day's wage but a servant was a part of the family and the economy of the home. The hidden 00:14:49.38\00:15:00.63 tragedy of the story is that there are not enough servants in the house to finish the work 00:15:00.66\00:15:10.04 that he's got to outsource the labor to those who are strangers because there's not enough 00:15:10.07\00:15:19.81 committed servants in the house. This amazing, friends of mine, that even in the text, did you 00:15:19.85\00:15:25.35 notice that the owner has to go in search of the laborers? It is a constant search of those to do 00:15:25.39\00:15:30.99 or complete the work. In other words, the labor is not labor, is not looking for the employer 00:15:31.03\00:15:40.17 but the employer is actually looking for the laborers, and what God is prophesying is that 00:15:40.20\00:15:46.11 at the end of time, there will be a shortage of labor. Are you hearing me today, Saints? I need 00:15:46.14\00:15:53.48 you to know, friends, that Jesus has hidden in plain sight the truth that his work would 00:15:53.52\00:16:01.22 struggle simply because there is a shortage of labor that is willing to go forward and 00:16:01.26\00:16:10.13 complete the work. In fact, the express lament of Jesus before he left. He said the harvest is 00:16:10.17\00:16:15.84 going to be plentiful but the problem is that the laborers are going to be few. It's amazing, 00:16:15.87\00:16:23.28 that what Jesus prophesied has become reality even in our time. Do you realize, friends, that 00:16:23.31\00:16:35.82 studies show that less than 30% of professed believers give only about 20% consistently serve in 00:16:35.86\00:16:45.87 Ministry at the church, and only about 10% are involved with a Ministry that touches the 00:16:45.90\00:16:50.44 unchurched community? The labor shortage, friends of mine, has nothing to do with the pandemic. 00:16:50.47\00:16:57.25 You see, I need us to know that the pandemic did not create the labor shortage. All the pandemic 00:16:57.28\00:17:01.88 did was give us a Ministry alibi. [Congregation: Clapping] 00:17:01.92\00:17:03.49 All it did was just give us cover for not being active in 00:17:03.52\00:17:08.06 the Lord's army. In fact, friends of mine, I need us to know that the pandemic does not 00:17:08.09\00:17:14.36 change values. What the pandemic did is it reveal our values. You see, one of the things, tell me 00:17:14.36\00:17:21.10 if I'm lying, is that whatever are real values were, they didn't get canceled in the 00:17:21.14\00:17:30.81 pandemic, they got adjusted in the pandemic. In other words, we didn't stop having birthday 00:17:30.85\00:17:38.79 parties we just started having them in drive-by fashion. We didn't stop having family 00:17:38.82\00:17:45.83 reunions we just started doing them on Zoom. You are all mighty quiet today. We didn't stop 00:17:45.86\00:17:53.03 going to work, we just started working from home. I guess what I'm saying, friends of mine, is 00:17:53.07\00:18:01.94 that if serving and impacting the community was a true value, it didn't get canceled by the 00:18:01.98\00:18:09.22 pandemic, we just found a creative way to be of use even in the midst of the pandemic. 00:18:09.25\00:18:16.89 And even, friends, as we rebuild as we emerge from the pandemic... Oh by the way, which 00:18:16.93\00:18:22.46 is not over. Are you all with me today? In other words, some of you all wild'n maskless out here 00:18:22.50\00:18:32.84 in these streets. Are you all hear me today? The truth is we still need to mask up, we still 00:18:32.87\00:18:41.35 need to take certain precautions, but the crazy thing is that we've gone back to 00:18:41.38\00:18:43.42 events, we've gone back to travel, we've gone back to stadiums, we've gone back to 00:18:43.45\00:18:52.39 work. The only thing that we are tentative or cautious about is doing the work that God has 00:18:52.43\00:18:55.33 assigned us to do. Let me just kind of say this like I feel it. The reason that some of our 00:18:55.36\00:19:05.37 churches are on the verge of dying is because we are practicing Evangelistic 00:19:05.41\00:19:13.98 abstinence. It's crazy, friends, because there is no abstinence in our work, there is no 00:19:14.02\00:19:22.42 abstinence in our recreation, there is no abstinence in our shopping. In other words, we are 00:19:22.46\00:19:31.80 socially active, we are professionally active, but the problem is we are Ministry 00:19:31.83\00:19:38.61 celibate. In other words, when it comes down to serving, we have become like eunuchs. We're 00:19:38.64\00:19:46.15 saving it for the right day, saving it for the perfect time, waiting for the right occasion. 00:19:46.18\00:19:50.99 But do I have some saints who are going to be evangelistically promiscuous, who are not trying 00:19:51.02\00:19:56.52 to save it, or wait for it? In other words, you're going to give it to whoever wants it and 00:19:56.56\00:20:01.76 you're willing to share the gospel with whoever is willing to receive it. Are you all with 00:20:01.80\00:20:12.07 me today, friends? See, I need you to hear the preacher's heart today because the burden is not 00:20:12.11\00:20:19.55 just for you to be in service, the burden is for you to be in service. The burden is not for 00:20:19.58\00:20:24.75 you to be in church, the burden is for us to be active and touching the lives of those that 00:20:24.79\00:20:32.03 need the healing touch of Jesus. Are you all with me today, friends? I need us to know that 00:20:32.06\00:20:37.77 the body of Christ is not devoid of gifts and Christ has seen to it that the body is lacking in 00:20:37.80\00:20:47.74 no area. But the one thing that Christ cannot dictate is our willingness to be active and use 00:20:47.78\00:20:55.42 in service for our King. In fact, the Bible says the landowner has to make several 00:20:55.45\00:21:00.32 trips to go out because there's not enough servants to finish the assignments. Let me just say 00:21:00.36\00:21:06.56 specifically to those who are younger and wanting to get active in the church. I need 00:21:06.59\00:21:14.80 some to understand that your greatest contribution to the church cannot be assessment. You 00:21:14.84\00:21:21.98 see, there are whole lot of folk in our time that sit around dinner tables after church and 00:21:22.01\00:21:29.35 on devices during church with a whole bunch of theories about what the church should be doing 00:21:29.38\00:21:37.36 and what the church is not doing while not participating in bettering the work of God. What 00:21:37.39\00:21:45.10 I'm saying to somebody is you've got to get to a place where your greatest contribution to the 00:21:45.13\00:21:53.74 world is more than a Facebook post. See, we have developed a generation of ecclesiastical 00:21:53.78\00:22:02.42 troubleshooters but all they do is identify the problem, but they'll never get their hands 00:22:02.45\00:22:08.16 dirty and help solve the problem. So that you got a whole lot of folk that will complain 00:22:08.19\00:22:12.06 about everything that's wrong with the young people, but they'll never get involved in a 00:22:12.09\00:22:16.20 Ministry to young people. You've got some that will complain about what's wrong with the 00:22:16.23\00:22:20.60 school, but they'll never get involved and better what's happening at the school. You've 00:22:20.64\00:22:24.91 got some that complains what we're not doing with the community, but they'll never 00:22:24.94\00:22:30.91 join a Ministry that impacts the community. The crazy thing is, I've met complaining people and 00:22:30.95\00:22:38.89 I've met serving people, but guess what, they are never ever the same people because those 00:22:38.92\00:22:44.16 who serve don't spend a whole lot of time in assessment because they've got to make a 00:22:44.19\00:22:50.20 difference in growing the work of God. [Congregation: Clapping] 00:22:50.23\00:22:52.17 At some point, friends, we got to stop talking about it. We got to put both hands on the gospel 00:22:52.20\00:22:58.34 plow and be about our Father's business. Are you all hearing the Word today, friends? Listen, 00:22:58.37\00:23:05.01 man, real talk. I remember one of my kind of less than stellar moments as a pastor was in my 00:23:05.05\00:23:10.62 first district. I remember we had had kind of a Saturday night social of some sort. 00:23:10.65\00:23:14.42 When it was done we had to begin stacking all the chairs and the 00:23:14.46\00:23:18.69 tables. I remember me and some of the young guys at my Church, we have begun stacking up the 00:23:18.73\00:23:24.67 chairs and the tables and getting them put in place. 00:23:24.70\00:23:26.53 And so, there was another able-bodied man who did not help stack or move the chairs and 00:23:26.57\00:23:33.81 tables. But what he did was he sat in the corner and start saying you need to move it there 00:23:33.84\00:23:39.31 and you need to lift with your legs and you need to not scratch 00:23:39.35\00:23:44.52 up the walls, and it's crazy because he's telling what we ought to do while sitting on his 00:23:44.55\00:23:51.23 behind over in the corner. Now, I need you to know I feel a heat coming up the back of my neck. 00:23:51.26\00:23:56.23 In a full preaching voice- it was not a good moment- I let him know that at some point, 00:23:56.26\00:24:02.40 you got to stop telling us what to do and you got to put your hands on something. 00:24:02.44\00:24:07.81 See, what I need somebody to know is that those who are doers will never be coached by those 00:24:07.84\00:24:16.69 who are sayers. In other words, when you're actually doing the work you can't be mentored by 00:24:16.72\00:24:24.36 those who are coaching the work. It's time for us to put our hands on the plow and be about 00:24:24.39\00:24:32.87 the work of God. Are you all hear me today, friends? And even as I kind of talk today about 00:24:32.90\00:24:38.14 what it means to be a content believer, hear me on this, I need somebody to know that you 00:24:38.17\00:24:52.09 will never experience Godly contentment until you get engaged in service. Listen, what 00:24:52.12\00:24:59.13 I'm about to say is somewhat unscientific. One of the things I've noticed is that some of the 00:24:59.16\00:25:11.04 most happy and joyful and pleasant people in the world are not those that function in 00:25:11.07\00:25:20.82 survival mode as an island unto themselves living about their own matters, the happiest folks 00:25:20.85\00:25:29.72 on the planet are the ones who don't live as collectors of things, but they function as 00:25:29.76\00:25:39.30 conduits of divine grace because they live their life in service for their fellow man. So I need 00:25:39.33\00:25:47.98 us to understand beloved that there are innate blessings that can only be discovered when you 00:25:48.01\00:25:51.91 touch the lives of the broken, that there are mercies that can only be received when you 00:25:51.95\00:26:00.86 function as a pitcher that pours out and not a container that's always receiving in. There is a 00:26:00.89\00:26:08.26 satisfaction in life that is the result of generosity and not a life of constantly collecting. 00:26:08.30\00:26:15.57 See, what serving does, friends, is that serving keeps you grounded. Serving keeps you 00:26:15.60\00:26:21.94 stable, serving keeps you humble, and serving helps you maintain a touch with broken 00:26:21.98\00:26:28.78 humanity. Are you all with me today, friends? I need us to know that a person that is 00:26:28.82\00:26:33.22 connected to God through serving, they are not filled with a bunch of complaints. They 00:26:33.25\00:26:42.63 are not anxious and upset by every little thing. They do not give weight to every vein or 00:26:42.66\00:26:51.07 idle thought. In fact, one of the things you should know is that those who are active in 00:26:51.11\00:27:00.05 service are actually less likely to sin. In fact, I love what the book Fundamentals of Education 00:27:00.08\00:27:07.06 says, it literally says that those who would be overcomers must be drawn out of themselves. 00:27:07.09\00:27:15.60 The only thing which will accomplish this great work is to become intensely interested in 00:27:15.63\00:27:25.37 the salvation of-- are you all hearing this thing today, church? See, the problem is we 00:27:25.41\00:27:27.11 spend all day in our prayer closet trying not to sin, focusing on what we do wrong or 00:27:27.14\00:27:30.68 right. But she says that if you begin and be interested in somebody else's salvation, you 00:27:30.71\00:27:35.85 get the victory in the process.
