been arguing about something.

walked deeper into the garden,

forget him-turned and said

and walked off, alone.

There was a sadness
about him, I guess you'd say.

could tell by his stride,

Like I walk when I have a great

help, but I could tell he

keeping quiet and out of sight,

until he came to one of my

favorite spots. It's a
little clearing where I eat

children stories. And there he

began to pray. I learned later

that this was the man
we had heard so much about,

healed the sick and even raised

was Jesus. Jesus of Nazareth.

describe the final week of our

Savior as an exasperating
roller coaster. Because at the

beginning of the week the
people shouted Hosanna when they

saw Jesus make his triumphal
entry into Jerusalem. But by

the end of the week the same
people who had shouted Hosanna

were the same people who were
now shouting, “Crucify him!”

in Pilate's judgment hall.
That's why you can't put your

trust in people. Because
folk will be with you one minute

and then against you the next.
Do I have a witness in this

place? Some people are like the
wind. You don't know which way

next. That's why I agree with

the Psalmist when he
says, “Some trust in chariots.

Some trust in horses.
But I shall remember the

name of our God.”  On
Sunday the crowds cheer Jesus as

he triumphantly entered
Jerusalem. Everybody was talking

about Jesus. Everybody
was thinking about Jesus.

Everybody was singing his
praises. Everybody wants to

be near him, they wanted
to hear him, they wanted to

touch him, they wanted to
see him, but these same people

who were waving palm
branches a little earlier are

“Crucify him.”  On Thursday,

Jesus has one final
meal with his disciples.

to prepare his followers

How Judas would betray him,

disciples: Look, just pray.

asleep. Not once, but twice.

But my Jesus keeps on
praying. Jesus prays the

same thing three times.
Father, if it be possible,

me. Nevertheless, not my will,

Why does Jesus pray for a cup,

God to take a cup
from him? What is this cup?

The Bible says in

it defines the cup by

Lord the cup of his wrath.”
Jeremiah 25, verses 15 and 16,

continues with the same
thing: “This is what the Lord,

the God of Israel, said to
me: Take from my hands this cup,
00:14:51.39\00:14:54.92
filled with the wine of my
wrath.”  But I can hear the

second angel of Revelation
14 saying, “Babylon is fallen,
00:14:58.93\00:15:02.70
is fallen, that great city,
because she made all nations
00:15:02.73\00:15:06.17
drink of the wine of the
wrath of her fornication.”

I hear the third angel of
Revelation say, “If any man

worship the beast, his
image, receive his mark in his

forehead or his hand, the
same shall drink of the wine

of the wrath of God.”  We
all know you drink from a cup.

And the cup Jesus was
asked to be spared of was the
00:15:23.52\00:15:28.12
cup of God's wrath. The
reason Jesus came to earth,

the reason he took on
the form of man, the reason

he preached, he talked,
he healed for three years,

was to come to this
very point of his existence.

Jesus was born to die.
Jesus came to be our substitute.

Jesus came to pay the
price for our sins. Jesus came

to drink the cup of
God's wrath so we wouldn't have

to taste it for ourselves.
That's why he was born.

That's why he came.
That's why he died on the cross.

So Jesus prayed, “Father,
let this cup pass from me.”

But you know what? His prayer
didn't change the outcome.

the insults, the beatings,

evangelist Billy Graham said,

The first thing I
noticed as I ran through

That stays with you forever.

never go back there again.

But when I heard who
they were crucifying,

by watching him the garden,

Latin it's called Calvary.

In the Hebrew it's
called Golgotha. The place of

the skull. Geographically,
Golgotha is not a

very high hill. But
spiritually speaking,
00:22:14.66\00:22:18.73
it's the highest
hill in the world. For it
00:22:18.77\00:22:23.10
was on this hill that
God's justice was affected
00:22:23.14\00:22:28.38
by God's grace. God's law
was linked with God's love.
00:22:28.41\00:22:34.58
Man's sin intersected
with God's sovereignty,
00:22:34.62\00:22:39.52
and Jesus crushed
Satan's head. It was on Friday
00:22:39.55\00:22:45.56
that my Jesus carried
our sins, carried our shame,
00:22:45.59\00:22:50.53
carried our
salvation up Golgotha's hill.

But you can imagine
the weight, the load,

the responsibility as Jesus
made his way toward Calvary.

Jesus could have
called ten thousand angels.

He could have called
and told his Father, Father,

I can't do this. He
could have beamed himself

back up into heavenly
orbit, but these weren't

options for Jesus on that day.

complete the Father's plan

there to make the gospel

He was there to unlock

the prophetic
announcement of his coming into

our sins be fulfilled? If

Jesus had not gone to
Golgotha, how then would

we have the opportunity
for salvation and eternal

life? I surmise Jesus
had to go to Golgotha.

Calvary. Before the world

an amazing plan in place.
