(Breath of Life Theme Music) 00:00:01.56\00:00:08.30 Sermon #B708 - Troubler Of Israel 00:00:08.34\00:00:19.85 Pastor Byrd:Now it's time to hear a word from the Lord. 00:00:19.88\00:00:22.28 First Kings Chapter 18. 00:00:22.32\00:00:23.95 First Kings Chapter 18 and I want to go to verse number 17. 00:00:23.99\00:00:28.46 First Kings Chapter 18 and verse number 17. 00:00:28.49\00:00:34.00 First Kings 18 verse number 17. If you have your Bibles turned there with me, the word of God 00:00:34.03\00:00:41.47 says, And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that 00:00:41.50\00:00:52.28 troubleth Israel? Verse 18. And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy 00:00:52.31\00:01:01.19 father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed 00:01:01.22\00:01:05.56 Baalim. Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets 00:01:05.59\00:01:18.01 of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at 00:01:18.04\00:01:25.51 Jezebel's table. So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel and gathered the prophets 00:01:25.55\00:01:36.93 together unto mount Carmel. And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye 00:01:36.96\00:01:44.77 between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follows him. And the 00:01:44.80\00:02:04.69 people answered him not a word. Troubler of Israel is our challenge as we culminate this 00:02:04.72\00:02:15.80 month. Father bless us now. Speak for your servant heareth. 00:02:15.83\00:02:20.77 Go now through the airwaves and the computer waves and the 00:02:20.80\00:02:27.34 innovation, technology and speak to your people right now. 00:02:27.38\00:02:35.25 Forgive me of my sins and hide behind your cross. Praise you in advance for what you're getting 00:02:35.28\00:02:43.19 ready to do and I don't know how you're going to do it, but Lord you going to do it today. 00:02:43.22\00:02:50.30 So we praise you in Jesus' name. And for his sake, we pray. Amen. 00:02:50.33\00:03:07.85 And Amen. Troubler of Israel, you will remember that Israel had been saved from an evil 00:03:07.88\00:03:24.17 oppressive system in Egypt. After their freedom from Pharaoh and Egypt. Now, after spending 00:03:24.20\00:03:36.34 40 years in the wilderness. Things were going well until the time of the Judgment judges when 00:03:36.38\00:03:44.82 another generation the Bible says arose after them who did not know the Lord or the work he 00:03:44.85\00:03:53.76 had done for Israel. The situation became worse under a wicked King by the name of Ahab. 00:03:53.80\00:04:01.34 It became worse with his even more wicked wife named Jezebel who forced idolatry on God's 00:04:01.37\00:04:12.48 people and murdered almost all of the Lord's Prophets and Jezebel was arguably the most 00:04:12.51\00:04:26.90 wicked couple in the Bible. First Kings 16:33 says that Ahab did more to provoke the God of 00:04:26.93\00:04:35.64 Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel that were before him. But Elijah. God's prophet. 00:04:35.67\00:04:52.22 God's man. God's voice. Stood in the gap for God. Elijah boldly stood before Ahab and confronted 00:04:52.25\00:04:59.03 him with his sins and declared the Lord's judgment against him and all of Israel. The Bible 00:04:59.06\00:05:04.50 says that Elijah then prophesied to Ahab. That the Lord told him there was going to be a drought, 00:05:04.53\00:05:12.17 no rain for three and a half years. And sure enough the three and a half years. There's no 00:05:12.21\00:05:22.58 rain. Lake after the lake. Creek laughter creek. Stream after stream. River after river. Dry 00:05:22.62\00:05:32.63 up until there was hardly any water to be found anywhere in Israel. It was a time of chaos. 00:05:32.66\00:05:38.67 It was a time of confusion. It was a time of violence as landowners were doing their best 00:05:38.70\00:05:45.67 to keep people from stealing the little water that they had in their rivers and streams. It was 00:05:45.71\00:05:52.71 a time of protests as people all over the nation demanded that 00:05:52.75\00:05:54.88 something is done. Like most government leaders, Ahab looked for a convenient scapegoat 00:05:54.92\00:06:06.03 because when things are going bad, you have to blame something or somebody. Ahab chooses to 00:06:06.06\00:06:15.84 blame God. He didn't believe in God. And his wife Jezebel believed in Baal and the Gods of 00:06:15.87\00:06:21.74 the Grove, Asherah. So Ahab instructed the Israelites to forsake their God for Baal and 00:06:21.78\00:06:29.42 Asherah. The Gods of rain, blessing, and prosperity. But none of their prayers to these 00:06:29.45\00:06:34.06 Gods of rain. None of their prayers to these Gods of prosperity, Baal or Asherah 00:06:34.09\00:06:40.70 we're working. And they wouldn't work because Baal or Asherah wasn't God. They were man-made 00:06:40.73\00:06:49.64 Gods. But friends, today, I'm proud to say that God is God. 00:06:49.67\00:06:55.78 And God is so serious about the fact that he's God that God made it his first command, 00:06:55.81\00:07:02.28 “Thou shalt have no other Gods before me”, I will not put up with rival Gods. I am not a 00:07:02.32\00:07:11.23 favorite God. I am God. Now, I need you to understand that this drought was not coincidental. 00:07:11.26\00:07:19.00 This drought was not accidental. This drought was not unplanned, unexpected, unpredicted, 00:07:19.03\00:07:26.44 uncalculated, or unintentional. But this drought was the direct judgment of the one true God 00:07:26.47\00:07:34.25 because Israel had rejected God. And when you reject God, God one way or another we'll get your 00:07:34.28\00:07:41.69 attention. Three and a half years a half. Ahab. Jezebel. And the people were praying to gods, 00:07:41.72\00:07:51.77 lowercase G for rain, but it wasn't working. God tells Elijah now that I have Israel's 00:07:51.80\00:08:02.24 attention. Now that I have Ahab's attention. I want you to go to Ahab because I'm going to 00:08:02.28\00:08:11.79 make it rain. Elijah gets ready to meet Ahab. Ahab calls for 00:08:11.82\00:08:14.69 Obadiah. Obadiah is Ahab's Chief of Staff. But Obadiah fears the Lord and I say this because when 00:08:14.72\00:08:23.20 Jezebel, Ahab's wife tried to kill off all the prophets of God. Obadiah hid 100 of these 00:08:23.23\00:08:31.74 prophets into caves and supplied them with water. 00:08:31.77\00:08:34.31 Let me remind you today that in the name of Jesus. God always has an Obadia. In the name of 00:08:34.34\00:08:42.78 Jesus. God always has somebody on the inside to work out his sovereign purposes. God always 00:08:42.82\00:08:51.03 has an Obadiah. God always has a Joseph. God always has Mordecai in the king's courts. 00:08:51.06\00:08:58.00 Ahab tells Obadiah to look everywhere in the country for some water. Obadiah goes looking 00:08:58.03\00:09:06.24 for water. But instead of finding water, Obadiah finds Elijah. Elijah tells Obadiah, 00:09:06.27\00:09:12.55 go back to Ahab and tell Ahab that you have seen me. But Obadiah is scared to do this 00:09:12.58\00:09:21.62 because, for three and a half years, Ahab has been looking high and low for Elijah 00:09:21.66\00:09:27.36 because he's going to try to kill Elijah. Because he believes it's Elijah's fault that Israel 00:09:27.40\00:09:34.07 is in the mess it's in. But in the three and a half years Ahab 00:09:34.10\00:09:38.74 couldn't find him. So Obadiah's afraid to go tell Ahab that he has seen Elijah for fear that 00:09:38.77\00:09:45.11 Ahab will kill him, Obadiah. Obadiah then tells Elijah. I've risked my life for the Lord. But 00:09:45.15\00:09:54.72 now you want me to go and tell Ahab, I've seen you and when he comes looking for you, you're 00:09:54.76\00:10:02.06 going to disappear and then he's going to kill me. But then Elijah said, as sure as my God 00:10:02.10\00:10:12.44 liveth, I will meet Ahab face-to-face. Obadiah obeys the man of God. And he goes to Ahab. 00:10:12.47\00:10:20.78 And he tells Ahab, I've seen Elijah. Ahab goes out to meet Elijah, and as soon as Ahab sees 00:10:20.82\00:10:30.36 Elijah, he says, if it's not the Troubler of Israel. Ahab pins the droughts. The famine. And 00:10:30.39\00:10:38.27 all the troubles Israel is facing on the Prophet Elijah, but let me remind somebody today 00:10:38.30\00:10:45.77 that anytime you rebuke sin. Anytime you stand for the right. Anytime you speak truth to 00:10:45.81\00:10:50.45 power. You're going to be a troubler, but I believe that sometimes it's necessary to be a 00:10:50.48\00:10:57.22 troubler because according to John Lewis, there is something called good trouble. To speak 00:10:57.25\00:11:03.22 for those who can't speak for themselves. To trouble systems that are slavish, sinister, and 00:11:03.26\00:11:09.66 sorry. To speak truth to power. All threw-out scripture Jesus challenged authorities, rebuking 00:11:09.70\00:11:19.64 them for their self-serving, self-promoting ways. He upset the elites by spending time with 00:11:19.67\00:11:26.51 the poor and marginalized. He healed those considered unclean and returned them to wholeness. 00:11:26.55\00:11:32.89 He ate with the underprivileged and he treated them with class and dignity. He listened to 00:11:32.92\00:11:38.16 those who had been disregarded and deprived. He questioned current laws and challenged the 00:11:38.19\00:11:44.47 status quo. And as a result, became the target of those in authority and ultimately those 00:11:44.50\00:11:53.44 authorities killed him. But despite knowing he would be killed by the very people he was 00:11:53.48\00:11:59.48 trying to help, Jesus shows us that there are times when we must trouble the waters and 00:11:59.51\00:12:04.95 stand up and speak out and speak truth to power in constructive, meaningful, and unyielding ways 00:12:04.99\00:12:09.36 despite the potential consequences. Just as Jesus troubles things. There are times 00:12:09.39\00:12:15.06 when we must do the same and trouble public concern about an issue in hopes of prompting 00:12:15.10\00:12:22.04 action, but have we become more concerned with bright lights, big crowds, and big donors 00:12:22.07\00:12:33.25 rather than mercy, justice, and love. Have we become more interested in knowing who's who 00:12:33.28\00:12:38.02 and who whose of the world rather than helping the least of 00:12:38.05\00:12:42.92 these. Have we become more focused on being politically correct as opposed to 00:12:42.96\00:12:49.83 benevolently expedient, but sometimes, got to trouble 00:12:49.86\00:12:54.57 things. Elijah makes good trouble with Ahab. He says look Ahab. I haven't been to the 00:12:54.60\00:13:04.58 trouble of Israel. You have. You're the trouble. You're the problem. You're the one who 00:13:04.61\00:13:10.72 disobeyed God. You are the one who has worshipped Baal. 00:13:10.75\00:13:13.52 Elijah, in his holy boldness, then challenges Ahab, the 00:13:13.56\00:13:20.23 prophets of Baal, and the prophets of Asherah to a showdown on Mount Carmel. Elijah 00:13:20.26\00:13:28.84 says, your Gods against my God. The venue of this battle is Mount Carmel. But why Mount 00:13:28.87\00:13:33.98 Carmel? Mount Carmel was a stronghold whoever controls Mount Carmel controls the 00:13:34.01\00:13:40.95 northern half of the nation militarily and politically. Whoever controlled Mount Carmel 00:13:40.98\00:13:46.32 controlled the nation spiritually. So this fight was going to be a showdown. A fight 00:13:46.35\00:13:55.06 for the ages. Elijah versus Ahab. The God of Heaven versus the Gods of Baal on Mount 00:13:55.10\00:14:07.31 Carmel. No ticket price. No pay-per-view. No box seats. Attendance was first come first 00:14:07.34\00:14:15.68 serve. Now, the crowd on Mount Carmel was made up of three groups of people, and everyone 00:14:15.72\00:14:20.32 who would come and could come can. The first person or first group was just one person, 00:14:20.36\00:14:29.20 Elijah. He was all by himself. The second group on Mount Carmel was the 850 prophets, 450 00:14:29.23\00:14:37.51 prophets of Baal, and 400 prophets of Asherah. The third group was made up of the 00:14:37.54\00:14:45.18 majority of people who were present and wavering between two opinions. Now, if you were in 00:14:45.21\00:14:51.45 the crowd, you might have felt sorry for Elijah because Elijah was one man going up against 850 00:14:51.49\00:14:57.96 prophets. He was all by himself going up against all these people. In our everyday 00:14:57.99\00:15:08.54 vernacular, he was about to get jumped. One person versus 850 people, but let me remind 00:15:08.57\00:15:17.58 somebody today that every move of God that happened in the Bible never started with the 00:15:17.61\00:15:24.55 committee. It never started with the board. It never started with a group. But it always started 00:15:24.59\00:15:27.39 with one person. Elijah was by himself. But all it takes is one. Group number one. I feel my 00:15:27.42\00:15:35.33 help come. And group number one is Elijah. Group number 2 are the 450 prophets of Baal 00:15:35.36\00:15:40.50 and the four hundred prophets of Asherah. And group number three, everybody else who was watching. 00:15:40.54\00:15:46.98 And so then, Elijah comes now to verse 21, our final text. And he utters those famous words. 00:15:47.01\00:15:54.88 How long halt ye between two opinions, if the Lord be God follow him. But if Baal, follow 00:15:54.92\00:16:07.13 him. This last sentence and the people answered him not a word. 00:16:07.20\00:16:12.63 Lord have mercy. For generations 00:16:12.67\00:16:14.47 Israel has been trying to worship Jehovah and Baal at the same time. They want it both 00:16:14.50\00:16:21.94 ways. They want the power of Jehovah, but they want the decadence of Baal. They were 00:16:21.98\00:16:28.82 doing a little bit of God and a little bit of Baal. They had been double-dipping, riding the 00:16:28.85\00:16:34.19 fence, becoming polytheistic they believed in the one true God, but they also believed in 00:16:34.22\00:16:41.23 Baal. But you can't make a career of sitting on top of two fences. You have to come to a 00:16:41.26\00:16:48.60 decision. Neutrality with God is like treason or disloyalty. You can't run with the devil all 00:16:48.64\00:16:55.18 week and then stand with Jesus on the Sabbath. You can't go to bed with Satan and then wake up 00:16:55.21\00:17:02.32 with Jesus. Joshua said choose you this day whom you will serve but as for me and my house, we 00:17:02.35\00:17:09.39 are going to serve the Lord. Paul told the Corinthians, you can't drink the cup of the Lord 00:17:09.42\00:17:13.70 and the cup of demons. You can't partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. Jesus 00:17:13.73\00:17:18.53 himself said, no man can serve two masters for either you'll hate one and love the other. 00:17:18.57\00:17:23.94 Elijah said how long halt ye between two opinions if the Lord be God follow him If Baal 00:17:23.97\00:17:33.35 follows him. Elijah is calling them to make up their minds and the people answered him not a 00:17:33.38\00:17:42.59 word. In other words, the people were silent. 00:17:42.62\00:17:45.16 Elijah asks, who's on the Lord's side, And the people are silent. Silence suggests complicity. 00:17:45.19\00:17:55.70 To be silent means you don't disagree with what's going on. You're silent. You're complicit. 00:17:55.74\00:18:03.35 Things can be going wrong, but you don't say a thing and too often today at the church of 00:18:03.38\00:18:09.38 today is like Israel of old silence. The church is silent on wrongdoing. The church is silent 00:18:09.42\00:18:20.63 on sin, afraid to call sin by its right name because we're too afraid in 2021, to offend 00:18:20.66\00:18:29.57 somebody or hurt somebody's feelings. 00:18:29.60\00:18:32.31 The church is silent on injustice. Far too many people in the house of God who profess 00:18:32.34\00:18:40.52 to love the Lord are only concerned with me. Myself. And I. But we can't send checks for 00:18:40.55\00:18:47.09 disaster relief and avoid examining the lifestyles that contribute at least in part to 00:18:47.12\00:18:53.33 some of these natural disasters. We can't then just send water to Houston and think we've done our 00:18:53.36\00:18:59.27 part and that's enough. We can't do hunger walks but refused to change our consumerist 00:18:59.30\00:19:04.64 lifestyles. We can't sit in church or watch Church on the internet and say Amen, 00:19:04.67\00:19:09.51 but turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to the cries of erroneous exploitation, prejudicial 00:19:09.54\00:19:16.52 profiling, and malicious mistreatment. 00:19:16.55\00:19:18.69 How are you going to be a Christian for fifty years and you don't do anything to 00:19:18.72\00:19:24.26 marginalize? How are you going to be a seven-day Adventists all your life and yet not help the 00:19:24.29\00:19:29.53 oppressed? The greatest sermon is not the one that's preached. But it's the one that you live. 00:19:29.56\00:19:35.34 Jesus is not so impressed with how we know the word. He's most pleased with how we live the 00:19:35.37\00:19:42.48 word. Jesus is not so concerned with our standing in the community as much as he is about 00:19:42.51\00:19:49.65 whether we're making a difference in the community. Jesus is not concerned so much 00:19:49.68\00:19:57.39 about our membership, and club organizations, fraternities, or sororities as much as he is 00:19:57.43\00:20:04.60 about us doing something to help the least of these in these same clubs organizations, 00:20:04.63\00:20:08.37 fraternities, and sororities. We cannot subscribe to the thought that one must pull himself or 00:20:08.40\00:20:15.74 herself up by their own bootstraps. Some people don't have any bootstraps to be pulled 00:20:15.78\00:20:24.29 up from. What are we doing? What are we saying? With who and what are we troubling? Do something. 00:20:24.32\00:20:36.80 If you can't run, walk. If you can't walk, shake your leg. If you can't shake your leg, wiggle 00:20:36.83\00:20:42.00 your toes. But do something. And yet, it is that many times people of faith talk a lot, but 00:20:42.04\00:20:49.84 they are inclined to do nothing. We wait, we watch, we look to see if somebody else is going to 00:20:49.88\00:20:58.42 do something but the kingdom suffereth violence. But the violent take it by force. Be a 00:20:58.45\00:21:06.66 voice, not an echo. Do something and be a troubler. So I'm getting ready to close and 00:21:06.70\00:21:13.34 Elijah says, all right, I'll tell you what. Get your 850 prophets of Baal and Asherah. 00:21:13.37\00:21:22.28 And to end this drought, you call on your gods and I'll call on my God. And the God that 00:21:22.31\00:21:36.59 answers by fire, let him be God. The God who wins will be the God that Israel serves. Everybody 00:21:36.62\00:21:41.80 agrees. And it's time for the battle to begin. Now. Let me take you inductively back to the 00:21:41.83\00:21:48.44 three groups. Let's start with group number three. And remember these are the people who are 00:21:48.47\00:21:51.87 gathered on Mount Carmel and they don't believe anything is going to happen because after 00:21:51.91\00:21:55.34 all, all these people have been praying to Baal, Asherah, and anyone else they can pray to for 00:21:55.38\00:22:00.78 three and a half years and nothing has happened. 00:22:00.82\00:22:03.42 Then there's group number two who followed Baal and Asherah and they were excited because 00:22:03.45\00:22:09.42 finally, they would get to prove that God, the God of heaven was 00:22:09.46\00:22:15.26 a fake. They would finally be able to get rid of this old man Elijah and after this showdown 00:22:15.30\00:22:21.80 on Mount Carmel, nobody in Israel would ever dare to call upon the name of the God of 00:22:21.84\00:22:27.61 Heaven again. Then we have group number one. One person, Elijah, all by himself. No, praise team. 00:22:27.64\00:22:43.36 No musicians. No pastors. No elders. No ushers. No large banners or congregation of 00:22:43.39\00:22:55.50 worshipers following him. He was all by himself, but I'm so glad that the man of God was not 00:22:55.54\00:23:07.55 scared. He had an ace in the hole. He had a secret weapon. He had God in his corner. He had 00:23:07.58\00:23:17.46 God on his side. It has been said that U plus God are a majority, but let me change that 00:23:17.49\00:23:22.46 right now. God is the majority. Elijah all by himself goes up against 850 prophets of Baal and 00:23:22.50\00:23:30.44 Asherah and says, there's a lot of you so you go first. They prepare their altar. They placed 00:23:30.47\00:23:38.38 an ax Ox, on the tight-top of the altar. And they started to dance around the altar. 00:23:38.41\00:23:44.12 And they started to call the name Baal. They began to worship 00:23:44.15\00:23:50.56 Baal and Asherah and everybody that is gathered together. They sang They praised, they danced, 00:23:50.59\00:23:57.97 they sang some more. They praised some more, they yelled, they screamed. They yelled some 00:23:58.00\00:24:04.91 more, they danced some more. But nothing happened, not a cloud appeared in the sky. Not a sound 00:24:04.94\00:24:11.98 of thunder was heard. Not a drop of rain fell, nothing happened. The only thing that took place 00:24:12.01\00:24:19.32 with some noise they were making. They then take out the Bible, say some knives 00:24:19.35\00:24:22.62 and start cutting themselves trying to show their gods that they are 100% committed. 00:24:22.66\00:24:28.50 They began pouring their human blood on the altar. And now we have singing, we have praising, 00:24:28.53\00:24:34.60 we have yelling, we have dancing and we have blood dripping everywhere. It's crazy. 00:24:34.64\00:24:40.64 It's outrageous. Surely now Baal and Asherah would come to the rescue, but nothing. 00:24:40.68\00:24:48.78 Elijah has had enough of their show. He has had enough of their 00:24:48.82\00:24:56.96 shenanigans. He has allowed them to make fools of themselves. He allows them to prove that their 00:24:56.99\00:25:05.00 gods were nothing more than stone and wood. It was time for evening worship. Elijah tells 00:25:05.03\00:25:14.64 them we've had enough. It's time to stop. It's now his turn. The man of God sets up his altar. 00:25:14.68\00:25:20.38 He invites the people to now join him in the worship of the 00:25:20.42\00:25:26.09 God of Heaven. It wouldn't be the kind of worship that had been going on all those hours 00:25:26.12\00:25:32.23 with cutting and shouting and dancing. But his service would just be 63 words. but not only 00:25:32.26\00:25:49.48 that, Elijah's prayer is not condemning. It's not condemning but it's a prayer inviting 00:25:49.51\00:25:56.28 Israel back to God. It's a prayer to God for God's grace and mercy. It's a prayer asking 00:25:56.32\00:26:03.22 heaven to invade Earth. It's a prayer of salvation. And just as soon as Elijah's prayer is 00:26:03.26\00:26:19.17 prayed something happens. The heavens open up. 00:26:19.21\00:26:21.81 Fire comes down. And then the Bible says, the people begin to 00:26:21.84\00:26:28.95 repent. They had experienced an encounter with God and as a result, they repent. 00:26:28.98\00:26:35.32 They turn back to the Lord. Elijah didn't mind being a mouthpiece for God. 00:26:35.36\00:26:41.86 Elijah didn't mind standing up for God. Elijah didn't mind speaking Truth for God. 00:26:41.90\00:26:49.47 Elijah didn't mind giving him good trouble for God. And God rewarded him. God spared his 00:26:49.50\00:26:57.85 life. Israel returned to God. 00:26:57.88\00:26:59.78 Today, I just got to ask somebody. Who or what are you going to trouble? I don't know 00:26:59.81\00:27:06.25 about you, but I want to get in some good trouble. I said I want to get in some good trouble. 00:27:06.29\00:27:11.36 Let's trouble the world for Jesus. Let's trouble the community for Jesus. Let's 00:27:11.39\00:27:20.14 trouble inequality racism, discrimination, and besought journey for Jesus. Let's trouble 00:27:20.17\00:27:30.58 Senator systems for Jesus. Let's trouble the status quo for Jesus. Let's trouble boring, 00:27:30.61\00:27:44.49 irrelevant, antiquated, out of touch. No impact having Ministry modalities for Jesus. But most 00:27:44.53\00:27:59.51 importantly, let's trouble Satan for Jesus.
