Mark 1:40, the word of God says,
"And there came a leper to him,

beseeching him, and kneeling
down to him, and saying unto
him, If thou wilt, thou canst

make me clean." Verse number 41,
"Jesus, moved with compassion.
The bible says, He put forth his

hand. And he touched him, and
saith unto him, I will; be thou

clean. And as soon as He had
spoken, immediately, the leprosy
00:01:04.43\00:01:08.70
departed from him, and he was
cleansed. And He straitly
charged him, and forthwith sent

him away. And saith unto him,
See thou say nothing to any man:

The key thing is I want you to
understand this. In verse 41,
Jesus was moved with compassion.

he touched them. But don't stop

there. Go with me to the Book
of Mark and we want to now go to

Mark chapter 5. I want to tell
about two more individuals who
were touched by Jesus, Mark

chapter 5, and we're going
to verse number 21. Mark 5:21,

and I'm actually going to read
all the way to verse number 43.

Mark chapter 21 and we're

The word says, "And when Jesus
was passed over again by ship
unto the other side,

much people gathered unto him:
and he was nigh unto the sea.

And, behold, there cometh one
of the rulers of the synagogue,

Jairus by name; and when he saw

Today, I just want to spend a
little time sharing with you the
subject, The Power of Touch.

Father God right now, as we seek
to make your word come alive to

your people, I pray right
now for your power. I pray that

in do season that we need right

is made, I pray that you would
move by your spirit.

The Power of Touch. There are
five senses that human beings
00:05:59.22\00:06:12.00
possess: sight, hearing,
taste, smell, and touch.

While we can all individually
prioritize them on what's most
00:06:19.41\00:06:25.85
important to us, all of them are
important to us to the existence
in the world in which we live.

While they are all important and
while I would not want to live
without any of them,
00:06:33.69\00:06:39.56
the sense of touch is the one
that places us in direct contact
00:06:39.59\00:06:48.14
with our world. The sense of
touch is very important, because
our bodies were made for touch.
00:06:48.17\00:06:54.98
In fact, our skin is our body's
largest organ. Our skin
comprises 18% of our body's
00:06:55.01\00:07:04.12
weight. There are as many as
five million touch receptors in
our skin with 3,000 of them
00:07:04.15\00:07:10.09
existing in a simple fingertip.
Touch is also the first of the
five senses that develop
00:07:10.13\00:07:17.40
and often the last of
the five senses to fade.
00:07:17.43\00:07:22.40
When you touch a person,
you connect with that person.
00:07:22.44\00:07:28.04
But the power of touch is
not just in the human world.
00:07:28.08\00:07:31.75
But the power of touch
is also in the animal world.

When you study and you
look at a newborn animal,
00:07:35.72\00:07:39.62
you'll notice that newborn
animals are always being licked
00:07:39.65\00:07:45.06
by their mothers. Why? Newborn
animals must be licked when they
are newly born in order to
00:07:45.09\00:07:52.70
survive. Mothers do not lick
their babies just to keep them
00:07:52.73\00:07:57.44
clean. But mothers lick their
babies to keep them alive and
healthy, because there's power
00:07:57.47\00:08:05.41
in touch. But let's also
consider the plant world. If a
00:08:05.45\00:08:11.55
tree, if a bush, if a shrub is
not kept in contact or in touch
with some type of soil, the
00:08:11.59\00:08:19.19
tree, the bush, or the shrub
will die. Why? Because there's
00:08:19.23\00:08:27.94
power in touch. But now, let's
move from the human world and
move from the animal world
00:08:27.97\00:08:31.94
and move from the plant world.
Now, let's go to the electrical
00:08:31.97\00:08:36.44
world. How many times have you
wondered why your refrigerator
00:08:36.48\00:08:39.68
or some other electrical
appliance has stopped working
only to discover that the
00:08:39.71\00:08:44.52
problem was a loose connection
somewhere? Something wasn't
00:08:44.55\00:08:50.66
touching. There was no contact
being made, and because no
contact was being made,
00:08:50.69\00:08:55.33
the appliance wasn't working?
Why? All electric power depends
00:08:55.36\00:09:03.04
upon contact. When you break
the current of your contact, you
00:09:03.07\00:09:08.14
lose your power. No touch,
no power. Being out of touch,
00:09:08.18\00:09:13.21
means being out of power which
is a reminder to us that the
power of life is only found
00:09:13.25\00:09:19.52
by maintaining contact and
touch with the source of power.

So today, I want to focus
quickly on three specific
miracles from Jesus' touch.

I want to focus in on a leper,
a lady, and a little girl.
00:09:30.30\00:09:35.97
Now, in Mark chapter 1, Jesus
touches a leper. What's
interesting in Mark chapter 1,
00:09:36.00\00:09:42.44
in itself is, lepers as
you all know, were considered
00:09:42.48\00:09:47.82
untouchable. To touch a leper
was to expose yourself to the
disease and risk being infected
00:09:47.85\00:09:53.52
yourself. Lepers were not to
touch or be touched by anyone.
So lepers then lived in
00:09:53.56\00:09:59.73
isolation. But even worse
than the isolation from being
00:09:59.76\00:10:02.70
touched, leprosy was such a
terrible disease that leprosy
prohibited the leper from being
00:10:02.73\00:10:08.27
able to feel what they touched.
So lepers couldn't be touched,
00:10:08.30\00:10:12.51
and lepers couldn't feel what
they touched. Lepers were
considered unclean.
00:10:12.54\00:10:17.85
They were forbidden to enter the
temple. They were forbidden to
00:10:17.88\00:10:22.62
go to church. They were
forbidden to have contact with
00:10:22.65\00:10:26.22
others. In fact, anyone who came
in contact with a leper was
supposed to shout, "Unclean.
00:10:26.25\00:10:33.06
Unclean." But yet, Jesus healed
this leper. Why did Jesus choose
to heal this leper?
00:10:33.09\00:10:41.44
This man was an outcast. This
man couldn't interact with other
00:10:41.47\00:10:48.08
people. This man was shunned
by society and shut off from his
00:10:48.11\00:10:54.18
God. But understand, this was
the very type of person Jesus
00:10:54.22\00:10:59.72
had come to heal. You see, I've
learned in my life that Jesus is
always rooting for the underdog.
00:10:59.75\00:11:05.59
Jesus is always pulling for the
last, the least, the lost, the
unlucky, and the left out.
00:11:05.63\00:11:11.03
The real story here my friends,
is not that Jesus healed the
00:11:11.07\00:11:15.80
leper. But the real story here
is that Jesus touched the leper.
00:11:15.84\00:11:21.38
Jesus touched him
when nobody else would.
00:11:21.41\00:11:25.71
What makes this even more
impactful is the fact that Jesus
00:11:25.75\00:11:31.09
remember, did not have to touch
people to heal people. All Jesus
had to do was say a word.
00:11:31.12\00:11:37.63
People would be healed. In fact,
in some of his miracles, he
00:11:37.66\00:11:42.26
touched. But in some
of his miracles, he spoke.
00:11:42.30\00:11:45.33
For example, if
you read Luke 17:12-14,
00:11:45.37\00:11:49.17
we're told of the time when
Jesus met 10 lepers in the City
00:11:49.20\00:11:54.18
of Samaria. Jesus didn't touch
them. But Jesus spoke to them.
He told them to go see the
00:11:54.21\00:12:00.72
priest. On their way to see the
priest, the bible says, "They
00:12:00.75\00:12:04.85
were healed." Jesus never
touched the lepers in Luke 17.
But yet, Jesus touched the leper
00:12:04.89\00:12:11.96
in Mark 1. Touching people was
one of the most basic ways that
Jesus could tell people he love
00:12:11.99\00:12:19.70
them, care for them, and had
compassion on them for what they
suffered in this world.
00:12:19.73\00:12:25.17
Touching is the most
basic experience of love,
00:12:25.21\00:12:27.04
and it creates a connection
between the ones who are touched
00:12:27.08\00:12:30.68
and the one who's doing the
touching. There's power in the
00:12:30.71\00:12:36.35
touch. But let's not stop with
Mark 1. Let's go to Mark chapter
00:12:36.38\00:12:40.92
5. In Mark chapter 5, we're
meeting two women. Now, let's
deal with the first woman.
00:12:40.96\00:12:47.76
You know her. You know the
story. The first woman has had
an issue of blood for 12 years.
00:12:47.83\00:12:54.90
Now, remember, Leviticus 15:25
taught that an issue or
discharge of blood would have
00:12:54.94\00:12:59.77
the woman spiritually
unclean and unable to gather for
00:12:59.81\00:13:04.85
corporate worship. But not only
that, anyone who touched her
would be unclean as well.
00:13:04.88\00:13:07.55
So just like the leper, the
woman was unclean. She couldn't
00:13:07.58\00:13:13.25
be touched, and she couldn't
touch anyone. She was shunned by
00:13:13.29\00:13:16.96
society and relegated to living
a lonely and empty life. She was
separated from others.
00:13:16.99\00:13:22.16
She had spent all of her money,
giving it to doctors only for
them to take her money
00:13:22.20\00:13:27.10
and do a patch-up job to her
illness. Things weren't getting
00:13:27.14\00:13:31.41
better for her. Things were
getting worse. She had been
cut-off from her family, cut-off
00:13:31.44\00:13:36.68
from her community. She had
tried everything. She had spent
all the money she could spend.
00:13:36.71\00:13:40.12
But she had heard of healer. She
had heard of a deliverer. She
had heard of an emancipator.
00:13:40.15\00:13:46.22
She heard that Jesus was passing
by. The healing power of Jesus
00:13:46.25\00:13:52.06
gave her hope. But there was
no way she was going to approach
00:13:52.09\00:13:57.03
him face-to-face. So the best
thing she could hope for was a
00:13:57.07\00:14:01.17
secret healing. She said, "If I
can just touch the hem of his
garment, then I can be made
00:14:01.20\00:14:09.21
whole." The woman, the bible
teaches, touches Jesus' garment.
The bible says, that
00:14:09.24\00:14:17.32
immediately, the flow of blood
dried up, and she was healed of
00:14:17.35\00:14:23.22
her disease. Jesus now is
walking and he stopped all of a
sudden. Jesus says, "Somebody
00:14:23.26\00:14:31.10
touched me." The disciples all
around him say, "Master, of
course, somebody touched you.
00:14:31.13\00:14:35.34
There are thousands around
us. What do you mean somebody
00:14:35.37\00:14:39.21
touched you? Somebody is going
to touch you." Jesus said, "No.
00:14:39.24\00:14:42.44
No. No. I said somebody touched
me, because I perceive that
virtue, that power, is going out
00:14:42.48\00:14:49.48
of me." The woman
trembling, identifies herself.
00:14:49.52\00:14:53.66
She now comes after Jesus
as the one who touched Jesus.

Now, remember,
according to Levitical Law,
00:14:57.53\00:15:00.30
she should have been stoned
to death for what she did,
00:15:00.33\00:15:03.40
an unclean person touching a
clean person. She was unclean.
00:15:03.43\00:15:10.67
But I love Jesus. Because
instead of calling her unclean,
Jesus calls her daughter.
00:15:10.71\00:15:15.64
"Daughter, thy faith hath made
thee whole. Go in peace, and be
healed of thy plague."

There's power in touch.
00:15:26.52\00:15:30.03
But there's one more individual.
There's another female in Mark
00:15:30.06\00:15:35.36
chapter 5. She's also sick
and in need of healing. She's a
00:15:35.40\00:15:42.24
girl, not a woman. But the
number 12 relates to her as
00:15:42.27\00:15:46.01
well. The woman with the issue
of blood has suffered for 12
00:15:46.04\00:15:49.28
years. But this little girl is
12 years old. There's something
about the number 12.
00:15:49.31\00:15:56.82
I wish I had time. But
anyway, when you read the text,
00:15:56.85\00:16:01.49
you will remember that the
little girl's father, Jairus,
had come to Jesus first.
00:16:01.52\00:16:09.53
But Jesus, in his journey, had
been interrupted by the woman.
00:16:09.56\00:16:15.47
After Jesus healed the woman,
00:16:15.50\00:16:18.11
Jairus is still trying to get
to Jesus to get him to heal his
00:16:18.14\00:16:24.05
daughter. But then
comes some bad news.
00:16:24.08\00:16:27.15
One of Jairus' workers stops
them as they're hurrying to get
00:16:27.18\00:16:31.25
to Jairus' house and says to
Jairus, "Jairus, don't bother
00:16:31.29\00:16:36.46
the master. Thy
daughter is already dead."
00:16:36.49\00:16:40.06
Now, I must admit, I'm human
and Jairus was human as well.
00:16:40.10\00:16:42.66
I can imagine Jairus'
anger and frustration.
00:16:42.70\00:16:45.63
Because if that woman
had not stopped Jesus,

then maybe Jesus would
have made to his house in time,

and his daughter would have been
healed. I want to ask you today,

what do you do when it's
your turn but not your time?
00:16:56.44\00:17:00.28
What do you do when it's your
turn for healing but not your
00:17:00.32\00:17:05.09
time for healing? What do you do
when it's your turn for a
promotion, your turn for a new
00:17:05.12\00:17:09.19
job, your turn for a new
house, but it's not your time?
00:17:09.22\00:17:14.13
Jesus looks at Jairus. He says,
"Jairus, don't you know who I
00:17:14.20\00:17:21.54
am? I am the resurrection and
the life. Be not afraid. Only
00:17:21.57\00:17:30.88
believe." Then I liked what
Jesus does. Jesus says, "I now,
only Peter, James, and John to
00:17:30.91\00:17:40.99
go with me. Nothing wrong with
Matthew. Nothing wrong with
Nathanael, nothing wrong with
00:17:41.02\00:17:47.40
Philip. But I just need Peter,
James, and John." Because I've
learned when you're about to go
00:17:47.46\00:17:52.90
and enter into demonic warfare,
you got to have people that you
00:17:52.93\00:17:58.17
can touch and agree with to go
with you. Are you hearing what
00:17:58.21\00:18:01.18
I'm saying? When they get to the
house, the people in the house
are screaming and crying.
00:18:01.21\00:18:06.01
Jesus says, "Hold up. Why are
you all acting like this? The
00:18:06.05\00:18:11.69
girl is not dead. She's just
asleep." The people laughed at
Jesus. But all Jesus is an
00:18:11.72\00:18:18.09
all-time God. They're laughing
at Jesus then Jesus puts them
00:18:18.13\00:18:21.86
out. I must admit, sometimes
when I go to the hospital and
00:18:21.90\00:18:25.37
someone is sick and the doctors
have done all they could do and
I get to the hospital room
00:18:25.40\00:18:28.67
and there are people in the room
crying and moping up, I'll say,
"Hold up. Wait a minute.
00:18:28.70\00:18:32.17
If you don't believe that I
serve a God, that's
Jehovah-Rapha, that God can heal
00:18:32.21\00:18:37.55
and God can deliver, I
need you to clear this room.
00:18:37.58\00:18:40.28
Because I will put them out,
because we don't need any
faithless spirits in the room.”

Jesus takes Jairus and Jairus'
wife with him. He goes into the
room where the little girl is.
00:18:46.29\00:18:54.93
He touches the little girl by
the hand. He says, "Little girl,
arise." The girl gets up.
00:18:54.96\00:19:05.84
She doesn't need physical
therapy. She doesn't need a
walking cane to help her.
00:19:05.87\00:19:12.51
She gets up, and she starts
walking. One touch, that's all
00:19:12.55\00:19:19.69
it took. There's
power in the touch.

In all three instances: the
leper, the lady, and the little
00:19:22.79\00:19:28.43
girl. When Jesus came in contact
with the diseased and the dead,
technically according to the
00:19:28.46\00:19:35.37
law, Jesus should have
been declared unclean because he
00:19:35.40\00:19:39.71
touched them. He should have
been declared unclean because
00:19:39.74\00:19:43.21
they touched him. Because they
were all ceremonially according
to their tradition, unclean.
00:19:43.24\00:19:48.58
But just the opposite happened.

Jesus transferred his purity to
their impurity with one touch,
00:19:51.39\00:19:57.49
and it doesn't make a difference
if Jesus reaches out to that
00:19:57.53\00:20:01.43
person or if that person reaches
out to Jesus as long as touch
00:20:01.46\00:20:06.53
takes place. As long as contact
is made in faith, there's
healing power in touch.

The power of love is directly
linked to the power of touch.

All three instances
are telling us, the church,
00:20:17.08\00:20:20.48
God's people that we are called
to imitate the love of Christ.

We are called to be people
of love. Our world is unclean
00:20:24.95\00:20:29.29
but we have been called to touch
the world. If we're going to
love like Jesus loved,

then we got to
touch like Jesus touched.

Jesus has called us out of
the world that into the world to

touch the world. Jesus calls us
to be people who are determine
to touch people who need to be

touched. But then somebody today
wants to know, "Pastor Byrd,

but how can we touch the world
when we're in a no-touch zone

right now? In this period of the
corona virus pandemic, we're not
00:21:04.73\00:21:11.37
supposed to touch. But yet, you
are telling us that the church
is supposed to touch a dying,
00:21:11.40\00:21:19.44
unclean world. So, how then
can we touch without touching?"

The answer to that question
is in the definition of the word

touch. The word touch
has multiple meanings.

It's not limited to putting
one's hand or another body part
on someone or something.

It's not limited to coming
in contact with someone or
00:21:40.50\00:21:46.07
something. But the word touch
also means to have an impact on,
to make a difference with.

So then to touch also means
that I'm impacting someone.

I'm making a
difference with someone.

So then although we may not
be able to touch with our hands,

we can touch someone by
making an impact on their life.

We can touch someone by making
a difference in their life.

We can touch without touching,
because there's power in touch.

I challenge you to touch
somebody without touching them.

Call somebody. Email somebody.
