(Breath of Life Theme Music) 00:00:00.96\00:00:05.60 Sermon #B648 - All In 00:00:05.63\00:00:20.92 Pastor Byrd: Romans Chapter 12 and we're going to verse number one, one verse, one verse. 00:00:20.95\00:00:26.49 Alright. The word of God says, "I beseech you, therefore, brethren," by the mercies of 00:00:26.52\00:00:33.19 whom? [Congregation: God]. 00:00:33.23\00:00:34.30 That you present your body as a living, what everybody. 00:00:34.36\00:00:36.53 Holy and acceptable unto whom which is your reasonable what 00:00:36.56\00:00:41.24 everybody. Father, we thank you. God, we praise you. We lift you up, we magnify your name. 00:00:41.27\00:00:45.04 For the next couple of moments, Lord, I pray that you would illuminate our minds, 00:00:45.07\00:00:48.08 give us receptive hearts. As God, we seek to hear a word from 00:00:48.11\00:00:51.75 you. We read this text. We recited this text many times, 00:00:51.78\00:00:54.55 but make this text come alive today. 00:00:54.58\00:00:55.88 We pray in the name of Jesus, let everyone say "Amen." Amen. 00:00:55.92\00:01:00.26 You may be seated as you're being seated. 00:01:00.29\00:01:01.86 Now, when Paul says in the New Testament, present your bodies a 00:01:01.89\00:01:06.39 living sacrifice. He says this against the backdrop of the Old Testament sacrificial system. 00:01:06.43\00:01:10.80 You'll remember that in the Old Testament, the priests would 00:01:10.83\00:01:14.04 come, put an animal on the altar and the offering, 00:01:14.07\00:01:17.61 whether it was a sheep, a lamb, or a goat, it would be slain. 00:01:17.64\00:01:22.61 The offering would be dead. In the Old Testament, priests would offer dead sacrifices, 00:01:22.64\00:01:28.75 not living sacrifices. Are you hearing what I'm saying? 00:01:28.78\00:01:31.99 Because Jesus had not come yet. 00:01:32.02\00:01:34.19 They were offering dead sacrifices that foreshadowed the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. 00:01:34.22\00:01:41.90 Jesus Christ who was to come had not come yet. 00:01:41.93\00:01:45.67 But who wants to come and die paying the penalty for our sins? 00:01:45.70\00:01:49.90 But in the 21st century, we are not to offer dead sacrifices. 00:01:49.94\00:01:57.58 That system is gone. It was dismissed when Jesus died on the 00:01:57.61\00:02:05.09 cross and the temple veil was rent in two with the sacrifice 00:02:05.12\00:02:11.56 of Jesus, the Lamb of God, which taken away the sins of the 00:02:11.59\00:02:16.26 world. The Old Testament sacrificial system, the sacrificial system of dead 00:02:16.30\00:02:25.37 animals has gone away. God doesn't want anything dead now. God wants something alive. 00:02:25.41\00:02:33.52 So, in the New Testament, there's a new kind of sacrifice. 00:02:33.55\00:02:38.35 It's not an animal, but it's you and me. 00:02:38.39\00:02:43.73 God is calling us to place ourselves on the altar as an 00:02:43.76\00:02:53.13 offering to him, but not as a dead offering, but rather as a 00:02:53.17\00:02:59.54 living sacrifice. Are you hearing what I'm saying? 00:02:59.57\00:03:01.41 So, a woman asked her Pastor one day, she said, "What does it mean to be a living sacrifice?" 00:03:01.44\00:03:09.65 So, her Pastor held up a blank sheet of paper 00:03:09.68\00:03:13.79 and he said, a living sacrifice means that you just sign your name at the bottom of the 00:03:13.82\00:03:21.80 sheets, but you let God fill in what he wants. That's a living 00:03:21.83\00:03:27.74 sacrifice. That's what it means to be all in. Everybody say all 00:03:27.77\00:03:32.87 in. Too many people think that God is always going to do what they want, when they want, 00:03:32.91\00:03:36.34 where they want, and how they want, 00:03:36.38\00:03:38.45 and when God doesn't perform in the way they think God ought to perform, they feel cheated. 00:03:38.48\00:03:42.78 That God isn't good enough. That God is not in loving God. 00:03:42.82\00:03:47.16 He's not a good God, that he's in a prayer-answering burden, 00:03:47.19\00:03:51.13 bearing God, but God is not a vending machine. God is God. 00:03:51.16\00:03:54.83 God doesn't have to do another thing for us. 00:03:54.86\00:03:59.00 And I'm learning in my life that sometimes you have to let go of the life you pictured in order 00:03:59.03\00:04:05.47 to have the life that God has planned. 00:04:05.51\00:04:09.41 But let's get back to the text quickly. 00:04:09.44\00:04:11.61 The text begins with the word, therefore, 00:04:11.65\00:04:13.38 everybody say, "therefore." Paul says," I beseech you, 00:04:13.42\00:04:17.89 therefore." Now, anytime you see the word therefore in the Bible, 00:04:17.92\00:04:20.49 you should always ask what it's there for. 00:04:20.52\00:04:24.23 Somebody go get that in a minute. And so when we come to 00:04:24.26\00:04:29.30 Romans Chapter 12 and Paul begins with the word, therefore, Paul is making a shift from 00:04:29.33\00:04:35.17 doctrine to practice. He's saying, you've got the theory, now get some application. 00:04:35.20\00:04:39.27 You got the book sense, now get some common sense. 00:04:39.31\00:04:42.98 He establishes doctrine in the first part of Romans 00:04:43.01\00:04:45.81 but then moves to application in the second half of Romans. 00:04:45.85\00:04:48.98 Paul is saying, based on everything that I've said earlier in this book, 00:04:49.02\00:04:54.16 this is what you now need to put into practice. 00:04:54.19\00:04:58.53 Because theology must always have a practical application. You all hear what I'm saying. 00:04:58.56\00:05:03.93 And so, therefore, in Romans 12 is a therefore of surrender. 00:05:03.97\00:05:09.70 Paul is saying that even though we have sinned, even though we 00:05:09.74\00:05:15.51 have messed up, even though we are guilty and deserve to die, 00:05:15.54\00:05:18.55 we have been declared righteous through Jesus Christ. 00:05:18.58\00:05:22.15 And so based upon the entire argument of Chapters 1 through 00:05:22.18\00:05:26.82 11, we should surrender our lives to him fully in Romans 00:05:26.86\00:05:31.33 Chapter 12. In other words, Paul is saying, based it all God has 00:05:31.36\00:05:36.13 done, I urge you, brothers, even though Paul could've used to 00:05:36.16\00:05:40.24 command here, he begins and uses a word and makes an appeal with 00:05:40.27\00:05:44.34 the word beseech, and he refers to the people he's speaking to 00:05:44.37\00:05:46.81 as brothers, pointing to his affection for them as members of 00:05:46.84\00:05:50.61 God's family, which means Paul's begging believers, not unbelievers. I wish I had a 00:05:50.65\00:05:55.65 witness in his place. I beseech you, therefore, brother and I beseech you, therefore, 00:05:55.68\00:06:00.32 brothers, by the mercies of God. 00:06:00.36\00:06:02.59 Now, I wanted to skip this part, but I have to do this part right 00:06:02.62\00:06:05.83 now. He says the mercies of God. 00:06:05.86\00:06:08.40 Now notice Paul does not say in light of God's grace, 00:06:08.43\00:06:15.40 I beseech you brethren by the grace of God. Paul doesn't say 00:06:15.44\00:06:20.04 that. Paul says I beseech you brethren by the mercies of God. 00:06:20.08\00:06:23.68 Why does Paul talk about mercy and not grace? Well, don't 00:06:23.71\00:06:28.52 understand. You have to understand the difference between grace and mercy. 00:06:28.55\00:06:33.49 Grace and mercy are not the same. Grace is when we get what 00:06:33.52\00:06:42.23 we don't deserve. But mercy is keeping us from what we do deserve. Let me say that again. 00:06:42.26\00:06:49.64 God's grace is getting what we don't deserve. 00:06:49.67\00:06:53.88 God's mercy keeps us from getting what we deserve. Somebody still not getting this? 00:06:53.91\00:07:01.28 I'm seeing that you're looking at me. Let me try this way. 00:07:01.32\00:07:04.19 It's like the man, I told this story before. 00:07:04.22\00:07:06.12 It's like the man who stormed into a photo studio complaining 00:07:06.15\00:07:10.19 about the quality of his photographs. He slammed his fist 00:07:10.23\00:07:15.16 on the counter and he said to the photographer, "Man, these pictures don't do my looks 00:07:15.20\00:07:22.77 justice." The photographer said, "Sir, with a face like yours, you don't want justice, you want 00:07:22.80\00:07:29.48 mercy." Do I have a witness in his face? So, be careful about 00:07:29.51\00:07:35.38 asking for justice because you just might get it. 00:07:35.42\00:07:37.59 And we're just like the man if we received what we deserved, we 00:07:37.62\00:07:45.19 ended up in hell, but it's because hallelujah, of God's mercies, that we are not 00:07:45.23\00:07:55.44 consumed the mercies of God. That's what Jeremiah said are new every morning. Do I have a 00:07:55.47\00:08:02.08 witness in his place? Thank God for mercy. [Congregati on: Amen] 00:08:02.11\00:08:04.91 Mercy woke me up this morning. [Congregation: Amen] 00:08:04.95\00:08:07.88 Mercy started me on my way. Mercy put food on my table and clothing on my back. 00:08:07.92\00:08:14.82 Mercy kept my heart beating while I was sleeping through the 00:08:14.86\00:08:19.49 night. Mercy kept you from getting in a car wreck on your 00:08:19.53\00:08:23.87 way to church. Mercy! We're living in an age where people don't, they think they don't 00:08:23.90\00:08:30.87 need mercy, but somebody knows you wouldn't be here right now if it weren't for the mercy of 00:08:30.91\00:08:34.81 God. Somebody ought to thank God for God's mercy 00:08:34.84\00:08:37.71 and what I love about Paul is Paul does not reduce God to one 00:08:37.75\00:08:43.22 mercy. He says mercies, plural, morning by morning, new mercies. 00:08:43.25\00:08:50.43 I see people like to preach that God is a God of a second chance. 00:08:50.46\00:08:55.00 No, God is not a God of a second chance. 00:08:55.03\00:08:57.00 God has given you chance after chance after chance after 00:08:57.03\00:09:02.04 chance. Oh --- yall don't feel like it today. 00:09:02.07\00:09:05.67 Some of you all on the balcony looking at us like we crazy. 00:09:05.71\00:09:07.91 Let me bowl down your alley. Some of you all are in school right now because of God's 00:09:07.94\00:09:14.78 mercies. Bad grades. Preach Pastor Byrd, I'm doing the best I can. Money low, but God's 00:09:14.82\00:09:26.49 mercy. You're living in mercy. You're going to school in mercy. 00:09:26.53\00:09:31.37 Somebody you're driving in mercy. Your apartment is mercy. 00:09:31.40\00:09:36.20 Your house is mercy. Your marriage is mercy. Nothing but 00:09:36.24\00:09:42.61 the mercy of God. Somebody should be in jail right now. 00:09:42.64\00:09:45.18 You should have had a nervous breakdown right now, but God 00:09:45.21\00:09:51.32 gave you mercy. He gave you life. He gave you health. 00:09:51.35\00:09:54.19 He gave you straight, so don't sit there and act like you all 00:09:54.22\00:09:58.26 cute. You can't worry about what other folks say about you. 00:09:58.29\00:10:00.83 You're just praising God for God's mercy. I will bless the 00:10:00.86\00:10:06.37 Lord at all times. And His praise shall continually be in 00:10:06.40\00:10:10.24 my mouth. Praise God for his mercy. Praise him. 00:10:10.27\00:10:20.18 Just ought to be glad you're not in the hospital somewhere. 00:10:20.22\00:10:23.62 That needles aren't hanging out of your arms. 00:10:23.65\00:10:26.96 I beseech you, therefore, brothers, 00:10:26.99\00:10:29.82 by the mercies of God that you present your bodies a living 00:10:29.86\00:10:36.30 words, but a living sacrifice sounds like an oxymoron 00:10:36.33\00:10:42.50 because how can you offer your body a living sacrifice? Aren't 00:10:42.54\00:10:52.31 sacrifices dead? How can a sacrifice be living? To sacrifice means to slaughter. 00:10:52.35\00:11:00.16 The compund term, living sacrifice is somewhat a contradiction in terms. 00:11:00.19\00:11:07.96 Animals that were sacrificed were always killed first, then 00:11:08.00\00:11:14.74 they were burned, and then they would either cook, they were 00:11:14.77\00:11:17.34 cooked and eaten. So, because animal sacrifices were killed, they weren't living sacrifices. 00:11:17.37\00:11:23.91 So, then what does Paul mean when he says living sacrifice? 00:11:23.95\00:11:30.05 Living implies life, not death. 00:11:30.09\00:11:34.29 So, to help us understand what Paul is trying to say, 00:11:34.32\00:11:37.59 there are two living sacrifices that are recorded in the Bible. 00:11:37.63\00:11:41.66 And these two examples give us a clue as to what Paul was trying 00:11:41.70\00:11:46.17 to say. The first example was Isaac. Everybody say, Isaac. The second example is Jesus. 00:11:46.20\00:11:51.31 Everybody says, Jesus. Alright, quickly, I'm gonna say these two 00:11:51.34\00:11:54.04 things and I'm gonna sit down. Let's talk about Isaac first. 00:11:54.08\00:11:58.08 You will remember that Abraham, Isaac's father, was told to take his only son, Isaac, 00:11:58.11\00:12:06.09 and offer him up as a sacrifice on Mount Moriah. 00:12:06.12\00:12:10.03 You remember that? Now, remember, when Isaiah, Isaac rather, was offered up to be a 00:12:10.06\00:12:17.37 sacrifice, Isaac wasn't a little boy. He was not a little kid. 00:12:17.40\00:12:23.00 Understand? Abraham and Sarah had Isaac at an old age, 00:12:23.04\00:12:29.21 which means then Isaac was old enough and strong enough to take 00:12:29.24\00:12:35.75 Abraham out. You all hear what I'm saying? But because Isaac became obedient unto death 00:12:35.78\00:12:41.52 because he had to be a type or a foreshadow of Christ, 00:12:41.56\00:12:46.80 not somebody who was taken against their will, but somebody who would be obedient unto 00:12:46.83\00:12:52.83 death. Y'all ain't getting this. Somebody who was all in and what becomes a living sacrifice. 00:12:52.87\00:13:00.54 So, here comes Isaac, climbing up the altar of sacrifice, 00:13:00.58\00:13:06.28 and he says to his father, "Daddy, I see the knife. 00:13:06.31\00:13:10.52 Daddy, I see the woods, but Daddy, where is the sacrifice?" 00:13:10.55\00:13:16.02 Because remember, he didn't know that he was going to be the 00:13:16.06\00:13:21.23 sacrifice. Abraham says, "Son, don't worry. God will provide." 00:13:21.26\00:13:26.87 And there Isaac is, laid up on the altar as his old father begins to strap down his son. 00:13:26.90\00:13:35.64 A living sacrifice. Isaac is tied to something that's killing 00:13:35.68\00:13:45.12 him. So, that's what it means to be a living sacrifice. 00:13:45.15\00:13:47.96 That if you walk with God, if you're all in with God, sooner 00:13:47.99\00:13:53.53 than later, sometime in your life, the will of God will tie you to something that's killing 00:13:53.56\00:14:01.87 you. What am I talking about? Somebody is tied to a child who 00:14:01.90\00:14:09.78 won't obey. And you're loving a child who won't love you back. 00:14:09.81\00:14:14.52 You can't separate yourself from your child regardless of how bad 00:14:14.55\00:14:19.69 your child is because you're tied to it and say whatever you 00:14:19.72\00:14:23.86 want. But if it weren't for your child, you wouldn't pray like 00:14:23.89\00:14:28.83 you pray. You wouldn't fast like you fast. 00:14:28.86\00:14:31.50 And so maybe, God is using that disobedient child to make you a 00:14:31.53\00:14:42.71 living sacrifice. Somebody else is in a marriage. That was supposed to be a match made in 00:14:42.74\00:14:49.42 heaven, but it seems like a nightmare on Elm Street. 00:14:49.45\00:14:53.15 And every day you go home, you're going home to be a living 00:14:53.19\00:15:01.76 sacrifice. You're on your way home and you're driving and you drive as slow as you can 00:15:01.80\00:15:06.33 because you know when you get to that house, you're about to be a 00:15:06.37\00:15:10.21 living sacrifice. Don't say Amen too loud because the sacrifice may be sitting next to you. 00:15:10.24\00:15:13.54 Come on, say, "Amen." [Congregation: Amen] 00:15:13.58\00:15:15.21 Isaac was put on the altar. 00:15:15.24\00:15:17.91 He was tied to something that was killing him, 00:15:17.95\00:15:21.12 but he was willing to die in obedience to God's will. 00:15:21.15\00:15:24.42 But God, just in the nick of time, stopped Abraham from 00:15:24.45\00:15:30.29 killing him and sent a ram to take his place. He's 00:15:30.33\00:15:35.50 Jehovah-Jireh. The Lord will provide, but Isaac died just the 00:15:35.53\00:15:43.51 same. He died to self, yielded himself to God's will. 00:15:43.54\00:15:48.84 So, when he stepped off of the altar, Isaac was a living 00:15:48.88\00:15:55.28 sacrifice. He became an offering of one's life, even unto death yet he was still living. 00:15:55.32\00:16:04.86 And this is what Paul is talking about when he's talking about 00:16:04.89\00:16:07.96 living sacrifice. He means the full commitment of somebody's life to God, even if it means 00:16:07.96\00:16:14.84 death. I gotta hurry up. I gotta throw this in. It's not popular to talk about sacrifice anymore. 00:16:14.87\00:16:21.78 People just want to talk about success. 00:16:21.81\00:16:24.78 But I'm here to tell somebody, young people, listen to me good. 00:16:24.81\00:16:26.95 Pastor Byrd 47 years old, I sat where you sit. 00:16:26.98\00:16:30.19 You can't have success without sacrifice. 00:16:30.22\00:16:35.49 You got to sacrifice. 00:16:35.52\00:16:38.66 The second living sacrifice was Jesus, but Jesus was the perfect 00:16:38.69\00:16:47.50 living sacrifice because Jesus actually died as a sacrifice in obedience to his father's will. 00:16:47.54\00:16:54.21 Jesus did what his father told him to do. 00:16:54.24\00:16:56.51 Jesus became the perfect lamb, the perfect sacrifice for our 00:16:56.54\00:16:59.41 sins. Jesus died that we might live.
