(Breath of Life Theme Music) 00:00:01.10\00:00:06.80 Sermon #B635 -Trust the Process 00:00:06.84\00:00:22.25 Pastor Byrd: The Word of God says to us in Isaiah 64, verse 00:00:22.28\00:00:31.89 number 8, "But now, O Lord, thou art our father; 00:00:31.93\00:00:42.70 we are the clay, and thou our potter; 00:00:42.74\00:00:52.11 and we all are the work of thy hand.” Today I want to speak on the subject: Trust the process. 00:00:52.15\00:01:06.43 Father bless us now. We give you praise. We give you Hallelujahs. 00:01:06.46\00:01:14.37 But now Lord in your word, we need You to speak. So, make this word relevant to your people 00:01:14.40\00:01:25.51 today. And through this message, that your people would hear your voice. In the name of Jesus we 00:01:25.55\00:01:40.50 pray, Amen. Now, if you're a basketball fan, you know the phrase, “Trust the Process,” 00:01:40.53\00:01:50.61 has been made popular in recent years by the Philadelphia 76ers. 00:01:50.64\00:01:58.75 Now for those of you, who do not follow basketball, let me give you some background. 00:01:58.78\00:02:07.89 For years, the 76ers were bad. For years, the 76ers were awful. 00:02:07.92\00:02:21.74 Cellar-dwellers in the NBA. Worse record in the NBA. No excitement since Dr. J. 00:02:21.77\00:02:35.18 No excitement-- young people y'all know who Dr. J is. That's 00:02:35.22\00:02:40.06 all right. Before there was LeBron James and a Michael Jordan there was a Dr. J. 00:02:40.09\00:02:46.26 No excitement since Dr. J. No excitement since Moses Malone. 00:02:46.29\00:02:56.47 No excitement since Charles Barkley played for the 76ers. 00:02:56.50\00:03:03.08 No excitement until the answer, Allen Iverson has played for the 00:03:03.11\00:03:11.19 76ers. And so in this process, fans got weary. Fans got discouraged. Fans got tired with 00:03:11.22\00:03:25.57 the team. But in the midst of turning the franchise around, there was a gentleman by the 00:03:25.60\00:03:34.61 name of Sam Hinkie, general manager of the Sixers, who told fans don't give up on the 00:03:34.64\00:03:43.02 Sixers. It was going to get worse before it got better. I wish I had a witness in his 00:03:43.05\00:03:51.06 place. So, those who follow basketball know that for the Sixers, even with high draft 00:03:51.09\00:04:00.64 picks, it got worse. Even with making trades, it got worse. Losing more and more games. No 00:04:00.67\00:04:12.18 excitement. No energy. Ticket sales were falling. Empty seats were everywhere in the arena. 00:04:12.21\00:04:19.19 Fans were getting restless. But Hinkie assured fans that there was a reason that they were 00:04:19.22\00:04:28.40 doing what they were doing. He told them to be patient and 00:04:28.43\00:04:36.81 trust the process. Some of y'all know a gentleman by the name of Joel Embiid, in his early years 00:04:36.84\00:04:45.91 with the Sixers, the seven-foot all-star center would always repeat this phrase and say, 00:04:45.95\00:04:55.56 "Things may look bad now. But we have a plan to make things better. Just trust the process." 00:04:55.59\00:05:05.73 And if you follow basketball, you know the process has worked 00:05:05.77\00:05:14.34 for the 76ers because now they're one of the best teams in 00:05:14.38\00:05:19.71 the NBA right now, and have their sights set on a championship. Do I have a 00:05:19.75\00:05:25.79 witness in his place? [Congregation: Amen.] No one likes losing. I know I don't. No 00:05:25.82\00:05:31.93 one likes going through it. No one signed up and said, "God I'll be your spiritual guinea 00:05:31.96\00:05:37.13 pig. Just take me through trial and tribulation and in the process, I'll be all right." 00:05:37.17\00:05:43.27 In my 25 years of pastoring, I have never heard anybody say 00:05:43.30\00:05:48.41 that. But something that has helped me, that I believe will 00:05:48.44\00:05:53.52 help you, make it through the process is the reminder that God is the potter and we are the 00:05:53.55\00:06:06.53 clay. And God is just molding and shaping us into what He would have us to be. 00:06:06.56\00:06:13.37 One of the things I like bit about being molded by God 00:06:13.40\00:06:15.87 is the fact that I'm quite aware of what God is doing with me. 00:06:15.90\00:06:19.94 But I wish sometimes-- I honestly wish that sometimes I could be placed in some 00:06:19.97\00:06:26.51 spiritual sedative state. And then when I came to, everything would be all right. 00:06:26.55\00:06:29.92 I mean, I wish I could go to what I call a spiritual coma, 00:06:29.95\00:06:34.82 so to speak and just wake up and become the best person in the 00:06:34.86\00:06:40.40 world without going through all the drama in life. Does anybody know what I'm talking about? 00:06:40.43\00:06:44.53 But life doesn't work that way. God has to mold you. 00:06:44.57\00:06:49.57 God has to shape you while you can consciously see and feel 00:06:49.60\00:06:56.38 what's going on. And this is not easy but it's all a part of the process. And in this process you 00:06:56.41\00:07:06.69 have to trust God. In my study of scripture, I studied this analogy of the potter and the 00:07:06.72\00:07:11.09 clay. It's one of the most powerful analogies in the Bible regarding the trusting process 00:07:11.13\00:07:15.30 -- trusting the process because when we understand the--- 00:07:15.33\00:07:18.07 the potter and the clay we will better understand why God allows us to go through what we go 00:07:18.10\00:07:24.24 through and why he keeps us conscious and aware in the 00:07:24.27\00:07:28.48 process. There are several things I've learned from the potter and clay that I want to 00:07:28.51\00:07:31.61 share with you today and then I must sit down. Number one: 00:07:31.65\00:07:34.58 Anybody will tell you, that when you're making pottery, you need 00:07:34.62\00:07:42.49 water. Before you can put a piece of clay on an electric wheel to start the actual 00:07:42.52\00:07:52.33 molding process to make the kind of pottery you want to make, 00:07:52.37\00:07:55.07 you must first add enough water in order to make the clay 00:07:55.10\00:08:02.21 flexible, in order to make the clay soft enough for you to be able to bend it, stretch its and 00:08:02.24\00:08:09.95 twist it. So, you can actually use it. Are you hearing what I'm 00:08:09.98\00:08:13.36 saying? Any potter will tell you, if you don't add enough water into the clay, 00:08:13.39\00:08:18.96 the clay will remain hard and rigid to be actually used. But when you add water in clay, 00:08:18.99\00:08:26.50 it makes the clay soft. It makes the clay flexible so you can use 00:08:26.53\00:08:32.54 the clay and make the pottery you want to make out of the 00:08:32.57\00:08:36.24 clay. Now, when we talk about God being the potter and we are 00:08:36.28\00:08:43.52 the clay, you must understand that the water used in this process is the Word of God. 00:08:43.55\00:08:49.86 Water in the Bible is also symbolic of the Word of God. 00:08:49.89\00:08:54.56 Yes, I know in revival, we talk about prophecy and we talk about 00:08:54.56\00:08:58.93 Bible prophecy and Revelation 17:15 suggests that water represents people but put 00:08:58.97\00:09:05.41 another way, water can be symbolic to the Word of God. Ephesians 5:26 gives us that. 00:09:05.44\00:09:10.75 It says, “That He might sanctify and cleanse us with the washing of water by the word 00:09:10.78\00:09:15.58 which means the Word of God is like water to our souls.” 00:09:15.62\00:09:20.29 God, the potter, can't begin to mold us, can't begin to transform us, unless, 00:09:20.32\00:09:30.73 we are first willing to get in His word, read His word and 00:09:30.77\00:09:39.91 study His Word. Too many people don't know the Word of God. 00:09:39.94\00:09:42.94 And what trips me out is when I'm watching CNN or I'm watching the news or ESPN and I see 00:09:42.98\00:09:48.62 politicians, motivational speaker, sports figures, celebrities, teachers and even 00:09:48.65\00:09:54.29 some preachers quoting passages that they say are in the Bible but they're nowhere in the word. 00:09:54.32\00:09:58.56 I mean really, where is the text? God helps those who help themselves. It's not in there. 00:09:58.59\00:10:07.14 Where in the Bible is the text that God works in mysterious 00:10:07.17\00:10:13.88 ways? It sounds like it comes from the Bible but it's not in 00:10:13.91\00:10:18.95 the Bible. God works in mysterious ways is a paraphrase of a 19th century hymn by the 00:10:18.98\00:10:26.09 English poet William Cowper. Where in the Bible is the passage, “Cleanliness is next to 00:10:26.12\00:10:34.76 godliness.” It's not in there. That was coined by John Wesley. Where in the Bible does it say 00:10:34.83\00:10:44.21 that God helps those who help themselves? It's not in there. Benjamin Franklin wrote that. 00:10:44.24\00:10:47.51 It's not in the Bible but I'm learning and I'm getting concerned as a 21st century 00:10:47.54\00:10:53.28 cleric, that there are even people in church who misquote the Bible. What am I talking 00:10:53.31\00:10:58.62 about? One example today, the Bible never says that three wise men visited baby Jesus. 00:10:58.65\00:11:08.50 The Bible says that wise men brought three gifts, gold frankincense and myrrh. 00:11:08.53\00:11:16.50 But where did you read in the Bible that three wise men visited baby Jesus. 00:11:16.54\00:11:24.61 That's why you got to know the word of God for yourself. 00:11:24.65\00:11:28.25 I can stand up here and preach till I'm blue in my face. But you've got to get in the word 00:11:28.28\00:11:35.02 yourself. You've got to read the word at home. You've got to read the word on your job. 00:11:35.06\00:11:39.89 You've got to read the word in your dormitory. 00:11:39.93\00:11:42.33 You've got to read this word in order that you might understand 00:11:42.36\00:11:47.64 this process. You've got to read the word in order that you might become flexible enough 00:11:47.67\00:11:51.67 to allow the potter to do what he needs to do in your life. 00:11:51.71\00:11:54.94 Just like potter can't use the clay unless there's enough water 00:11:54.98\00:11:59.18 to it. God can't do a thing with you, until we get some water. The word in us. God can't shape 00:11:59.21\00:12:07.46 us. God can't bend us. God can't stretch us. God can't mold us until we get some word to water 00:12:07.49\00:12:13.76 our souls. But the next thing I learned from the potter and the 00:12:13.80\00:12:16.80 clay, number two: After the potter adds enough water into the clay to make it soft and 00:12:16.83\00:12:20.54 flexible, so now it can start to work. 00:12:20.57\00:12:22.50 The next thing the potter does is he puts a piece of clay in the center of an electric wheel. 00:12:22.54\00:12:31.21 Now, this wheel has to spin, and start to spin, 00:12:31.25\00:12:36.35 so that the potter can use his hands to start the molding 00:12:36.38\00:12:40.46 and the shaping process with the clay as it is actually spinning 00:12:40.49\00:12:46.49 on the wheel. But if the piece of clay is not properly centered in the middle of the wheel, 00:12:46.53\00:12:51.77 then the clay will eventually tear apart before the potter can finish the process. 00:12:51.80\00:12:58.27 Somebody's not getting this. If the clay is not properly centered in the wheel, 00:12:58.31\00:13:04.85 then the potter can't work with the clay. 00:13:04.88\00:13:07.58 The potter will not be able to make the pottery he wants to 00:13:07.62\00:13:11.95 make. And just like the clay has to be properly centered in the wheel before the potter can 00:13:11.99\00:13:19.09 begin to mold and shape the clay, we've got to be centered in Jesus Christ before God can 00:13:19.13\00:13:27.30 shape us and mold us. To be centered in Jesus means that you're under complete control, 00:13:27.34\00:13:32.11 complete surrender that Jesus has to be your Lord and your 00:13:32.14\00:13:37.08 savior. I told people this week, "A lot of us want to make him savior but we don't want to make 00:13:37.11\00:13:43.25 him Lord." Because when He's Lord, we do what he tells us to do. [Congregation: Amen.] 00:13:43.28\00:13:46.99 We go where He tells us to go in order for the potter to mold 00:13:47.02\00:13:50.96 you, you got to let him be in the center of your life. Now, once the potter has added water, 00:13:50.99\00:13:58.83 once the potter has put the clay in the center of the wheel, we now come to number three. 00:13:58.87\00:14:06.81 The potter actually starts the molding process with the clay. 00:14:06.84\00:14:12.41 And what the potter first does as the clay is spinning on the wheel is, the potter takes his 00:14:12.45\00:14:18.05 hand and he pushes down his hand on the top of the clay to create an opening in the clay. 00:14:18.09\00:14:25.46 And once this opening has been made-- listen to me-- at the top 00:14:25.49\00:14:30.33 of the clay, the potter then takes his hand and he goes down deep inside the middle of the 00:14:30.37\00:14:36.04 clay as the clay is forming. And then he uses his hands to properly shape the clay 00:14:36.07\00:14:41.54 as it's building up during this spinning process on the wheel. 00:14:41.58\00:14:45.68 So then, the potter's hands are working both on the inside and the outside of the clay to mold 00:14:45.71\00:14:56.36 the clay, to shape the clay, to transform the clay into pottery that the potter wants it to be 00:14:56.39\00:15:02.83 as it continues to spin on the wheel. 00:15:02.86\00:15:06.57 But the potter can't make pottery unless his hands go deep down inside the middle of the 00:15:06.60\00:15:15.04 pottery as the pottery is forming. Somebody's going to get 00:15:15.08\00:15:18.88 this in a minute. In the same way God has to literally go deep down, deep into the middle of 00:15:18.91\00:15:26.72 our souls. He has to mold us and He has to shape us and transform us into the people that He wants 00:15:26.76\00:15:33.16 us to be. In most cases, however, this process is 00:15:33.19\00:15:40.94 painful. It hurts. It's uncomfortable because God's got to remove all that stuff that's 00:15:40.97\00:15:51.21 in us that's not like him. And then He has to instill some new stuff in us, so that we can be 00:15:51.25\00:15:58.19 more like him. And remember when the potter is molding clay, when the Potter is shaping clay, 00:15:58.22\00:16:03.86 the potter has to apply some pressure. 00:16:03.89\00:16:08.03 The potter has to apply some pressure with his hands as he's molding and shaping the clay. 00:16:08.06\00:16:15.24 And just like the potter, God has to apply some pressure. 00:16:15.27\00:16:21.94 He has to apply some pressure in order to get us to change and become the people he wants us to 00:16:21.98\00:16:29.35 be. And sometimes, it hurts. Sometimes, it's painful. Sometimes, it's uncomfortable. 00:16:29.38\00:16:37.49 Somebody knows and I've learned that sometimes you have to almost lose your mind 00:16:37.53\00:16:43.70 in order to change your mind. 00:16:43.73\00:16:46.80 Sometimes, you've got to go through something in order to change your position, change 00:16:46.84\00:16:55.51 your posture, change your perspective, and removing toxins from your life can be very 00:16:55.54\00:17:04.05 painful because our flesh wants to keep these toxins in our 00:17:04.09\00:17:09.16 lives. So, in the process of molding and shaping and adding pressure to the clay, it hurts. 00:17:09.19\00:17:14.40 I need somebody to know it's going to hurt. 00:17:14.46\00:17:20.00 When God is molding you, when God is shaping you into what you need to be, it's going to hurt. 00:17:20.04\00:17:30.35 But you got to trust the process because it's all a part of the 00:17:30.38\00:17:40.16 process. But then I've learned, number four. As the potter's hands start to work inside and 00:17:40.19\00:17:50.40 outside the clay, the clay begins now to grow and expand as it's on the wheel. The clay then 00:17:50.43\00:18:03.38 gets bigger. And so the last thing that the potter will do, 00:18:03.41\00:18:08.05 number four, is he will take a knife and he will start cutting off excess clay that has 00:18:08.08\00:18:19.76 accumulated on the pottery. You all don't hear what I'm saying? 00:18:19.79\00:18:21.80 And so the potter will cut this excess clay as he's molding and shaping the pottery on the 00:18:21.83\00:18:30.47 spinning wheel, the potter is smoothing out all the rough 00:18:30.51\00:18:33.94 edges. So, the pottery turns out complete and beautiful to the 00:18:33.98\00:18:38.45 natural eye. And that's just like God's in the cutting process, in the pruning process. 00:18:38.48\00:18:46.59 God is cutting out some stuff that you don't need in your life. God will prune out some of 00:18:46.62\00:18:56.56 your friends. God will even prune out some of your family. Sometimes spiritually, you 00:18:56.60\00:19:03.37 outgrow your friends. You outgrow your family. God will even prune out some of your 00:19:03.41\00:19:08.24 co-workers. Some of your employers, some of your worried about your boss, God will prune 00:19:08.28\00:19:14.42 out your supervisor. He will make your enemies your footstool. God will prune out 00:19:14.45\00:19:20.66 some bad habits. He will prune out some addictions and he will break some chains in your life. 00:19:20.69\00:19:27.56 He's the potter. We are the clay. And he knows just what we need and what we don't need. 00:19:27.60\00:19:34.94 And this cutting, this pruning, can be very painful. 00:19:34.97\00:19:42.74 But you still got trust the process and know that in the short term, it may hurt, 00:19:42.78\00:19:47.72 You all know how we'll go to a restaurant 00:19:47.75\00:19:50.59 and a server will come and you will order your food. 00:19:50.62\00:19:54.09 But before your food comes out, at the restaurant you sit there and you wait for the bread. 00:19:54.12\00:20:01.80 The rolls to come out. Don't act like y'all don't know what I'm 00:20:01.83\00:20:07.60 talking about. Some of you all just go to Olive Garden for the bread, come on say amen. 00:20:07.64\00:20:12.31 [Congregation: Amen.] Here you are ordering. The servers coming over thinking they going to make 00:20:12.34\00:20:16.34 a big tip because the tip is based on the total the bill. You all don't hear what I'm saying. 00:20:16.38\00:20:19.78 And here they come to your table and you say, "I would like to 00:20:19.81\00:20:23.65 have some soup. I would like to have some salad. 00:20:23.69\00:20:25.72 I would like to have some garlic bread sticks and I would like to have some water with some 00:20:25.75\00:20:30.23 lemon." You all hear what I'm saying. And the server says," That will be six ninety nine." 00:20:30.26\00:20:34.60 You say, "That sounds good, I'll take it," 00:20:34.63\00:20:36.67 because somebody knows sometimes it's about cost and not comfort. Do I have a witness in his 00:20:36.70\00:20:42.40 place? But you sit there waiting for the rolls to come out and while you're sitting there 00:20:42.44\00:20:51.65 waiting, the server --the waiter he comes over and says, “The rolls are in the oven. 00:20:51.68\00:20:57.25 The rolls are rising and as soon as they are ready, I'm going bring the rolls out to you.” 00:20:57.29\00:21:06.13 So, one day I'm in Olive Garden. I'm in my corner in Olive 00:21:06.16\00:21:11.60 Garden. Less you all take pictures of what I'm eating, but be assured it's eggplant 00:21:11.63\00:21:15.24 parmesan. Come on, say Amen. And I'm sitting next to the kitchen. And I hear some rolls talking to 00:21:15.27\00:21:24.61 me. The rolls start testifying to me. I'm not crazy but preachers can get a sermon out 00:21:24.65\00:21:32.95 of anything. And they're all said, "Carlton P. Byrd, I know you're waiting on me. 00:21:32.99\00:21:39.09 I know you really want me right now but I'm in a condition. I'm in unnecessary environments. 00:21:39.13\00:21:47.67 I'm in the fire. I'm not like anything else but I've been made 00:21:47.70\00:21:54.14 from scratch. Somebody put their hands on me. Somebody made me." 00:21:54.18\00:21:58.51 Everybody repeat after me God put his hands on me. [Congregation: God put his hands 00:21:58.55\00:22:02.75 on me.] Say God made me special. [Congregation: God made me 00:22:02.78\00:22:05.52 special.] The rolls say,"Byrd, I'm just like you. I've been 00:22:05.55\00:22:12.39 handmade. I've got something on the inside that really doesn't show up until I've been put 00:22:12.43\00:22:19.37 through some heat." And the rolls said, "Buddy Byrd, just understand. Don't rush me. 00:22:19.40\00:22:23.91 Let me stay in the heat because something is happening to me while I'm in the fire. 00:22:23.94\00:22:32.05 That's on the inside is rising to a new level. And don't rush 00:22:32.08\00:22:38.25 me. But let me stay in the fire because when I do come out, I'm 00:22:38.29\00:22:44.79 going bless you. And I've come to tell somebody, in the name of Jesus, that I know you might be 00:22:44.83\00:22:52.07 in the fire. I know you may be in the heat but you better tell somebody when I come up out of 00:22:52.10\00:22:58.51 the fire, when I come up out of this, I'm going to a new level in Jesus." [Congregation: 00:22:58.54\00:23:06.28 Applause] That's why you better learn to thank God for whatever 00:23:06.31\00:23:11.45 you go through. Because if you never had a problem, Andre Krauss said, "You would never 00:23:11.49\00:23:16.46 know that God could solve them. You wouldn't know what faith in God could do.” Trust the 00:23:16.49\00:23:24.20 process. Because he always has his eyes on you. [Congregation: 00:23:24.23\00:23:34.38 Amen.] He's watching you. He won't leave you. 00:23:34.41\00:23:44.05 Trust the potter. Trust the process. 00:23:44.09\00:23:55.73 When Daniel and I, lost our first daughter 20 years ago, I didn't sign up to be a spiritual 00:23:55.76\00:24:06.01 guinea pig. But I've learned to trust the process. I needed more water. I needed more word. 00:24:06.04\00:24:15.38 I had to keep Jesus at the center in my wheel. 00:24:15.42\00:24:20.09 I understood that do the molding and the shaping that every now and then, God will apply 00:24:20.12\00:24:26.76 pressure. I had to understand. I had to learn in my life that sometimes, God's got to cut the 00:24:26.80\00:24:33.64 fence. You've got to cut the excess clay. But through it all, 00:24:33.67\00:24:44.18 He never left me. Through it all, he kept his eyes on me. 00:24:44.21\00:24:49.02 I know there might be somebody in this process who sometimes feels God has left you, 00:24:49.05\00:24:58.26 that God has taken his eyes off of you. 00:24:58.29\00:25:01.36 But you got to trust the process. He will never leave. 00:25:01.40\00:25:05.87 He will never forsake you right there. 00:25:05.90\00:25:11.61 [Congregation: Applause] 00:25:11.64\00:25:19.11 Thank you very much for tuning in to this week's Breath of Life 00:25:19.15\00:25:23.42 broadcast. That it was like - almost like relearning it and I'm like, 00:26:40.23\00:26:43.77 I know that. I know that. I know that. 00:26:43.80\00:26:46.84 He did say something, and it's been going over and over in my 00:26:46.87\00:26:53.54 head. He says-- Lord I hide your word in my heart, so that I don't sin against you. 00:26:53.58\00:27:03.05 [Sobbing] 00:27:03.08\00:27:09.72 I feel grateful because I brought one of my sons-- 00:27:09.76\00:27:20.54 for two days and he actually enjoyed it. I didn't want to push it on him you know? 00:27:20.57\00:27:26.41 It is my responsiblity, according to word of God, to be 00:27:26.44\00:27:31.91 the leader-- the spiritual leader of my household; and I have not done that. 00:27:31.95\00:27:38.72 Dr. Byrd: I am so grateful, that René had the opportunity 00:27:38.75\00:27:42.32 to renew his relationship with the Lord. 00:27:42.36\00:27:44.96 René's story makes us mindful, 00:27:44.99\00:27:47.50 that the work of evangelism restores and strengthens individuals and families! 00:27:47.50\00:27:54.77 To help Brearg of Life continue its mission, 00:27:54.80\00:27:57.47 of spreading this wonderful gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:27:57.51\00:28:00.61 Please share a gift with us today. 00:28:00.64\00:28:03.58 Make your tax deductible gift payable to Breath of Life by 00:28:03.61\00:28:07.22 mail, at Breath of Life PO BOX 5960, Huntsville, AL 35814 00:28:07.25\00:28:13.19 Give us all call the number is 256.929.6460 00:28:13.22\00:28:19.03 Or you can visit us online at www.breathoflife.tv 00:28:19.06\00:28:25.30 [The End] 00:28:25.33\00:28:40.35
