(Breath of Life Theme Music) 00:00:01.00\00:00:10.27 Sermon #B624 - The Greatest of all Miracles 00:00:10.31\00:00:20.35 PB: Isaiah 7:14. If you have it, let me hear you say, "Amen". 00:00:20.38\00:00:24.55 Alright. The Word of God says, "Therefore, the Lord Himself shall give you a" what 00:00:24.59\00:00:30.43 everybody? Come on. Give you a, what everybody? [Congregation: 00:00:30.46\00:00:32.16 Sign.] "Sign. Behold a virgin shall" what? [Congregation: 00:00:32.19\00:00:35.40 Conceive.] Come on. Virgin shall, what everybody? [Congregation: Conceive.] 00:00:35.43\00:00:37.70 "And bear a son and shall call his name" what everybody?[Congregation: 00:00:37.73\00:00:42.04 Emmanuel.] "Emmanuel." Now Emmanuel means God with us. 00:00:42.07\00:00:44.41 Emmanuel means God with whom, everybody? [Congregation: Us.] 00:00:44.44\00:00:46.71 So today, I want to just spend, just a little time on this subject, The Greatest of All 00:00:46.74\00:00:53.95 Miracles. The Greatest of All Miracles. Father. Let's bow our 00:00:53.98\00:00:56.89 heads. Father, God, right now we ask that You would come in this place as we preach this Your 00:00:56.92\00:01:03.69 Word, the greatest of all miracles. May Your Holy Spirit move in this place today. 00:01:03.73\00:01:05.96 We give You praise, honor and glory Lord in advance for what You're going to do. 00:01:05.99\00:01:09.26 Hide me behind Your cross, forgive us of our sins. 00:01:09.30\00:01:11.50 In the Name of Jesus we pray, let everyone say, Amen. [Congregation: Amen.] 00:01:11.53\00:01:15.77 The Greatest of All Miracles. Now, I love miracles. 00:01:15.80\00:01:25.01 Anybody love miracles? [Congregation: Yes!] 00:01:25.05\00:01:27.52 I said, I love miracles. I love seeing God make Himself known. I love seeing God stomp out the 00:01:27.55\00:01:42.16 devil. I love seeing God do the impossible. I love seeing God show up and show out. 00:01:42.20\00:01:49.67 I love to see God do a surprising and welcome event that is not explainable by 00:01:49.70\00:01:58.61 natural or scientific laws. I love miracles. Do I have a witness in this place? Now, all 00:01:58.65\00:02:06.39 of us have our favorite miracle. We all have our favorite miracle recorded in scripture. For some, 00:02:06.42\00:02:14.40 it's physical healing. Jesus healing the man at the pool of 00:02:14.46\00:02:18.63 Bethesda. The woman with the issue of blood touching the hem 00:02:18.67\00:02:24.27 of Jesus' garment. But maybe it's not necessarily the physical act of healing but 00:02:24.31\00:02:31.98 maybe someone else, it's food healing. Jesus taking two fish, five loaves of bread and feeding 00:02:32.01\00:02:39.75 5,000 men plus women and children. Maybe it was the wedding where they had run out 00:02:39.79\00:02:47.96 of wedding punch and Jesus turning water into wine. But then maybe it's not the 00:02:47.96\00:02:55.44 physical, maybe it's not the food but maybe it's the miracle of life. Jesus raising Jairus' 00:02:55.47\00:03:02.34 daughter. Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. But then when I think of miracles, I can't help 00:03:02.38\00:03:08.15 but remember what took place in the Old Testaments. A donkey talking, the sun standing still, 00:03:08.18\00:03:20.16 a red sea parting, manna falling, lions' mouth shutting, a fire in a fiery furnace and no 00:03:20.20\00:03:24.50 one gets burned but the ropes. I love miracles. Are you hearing 00:03:24.53\00:03:27.44 what I'm saying? But when I'm asked what is the greatest miracle recorded in scripture, 00:03:27.47\00:03:32.41 for some it may be hard to answer because they are all 00:03:32.44\00:03:36.18 good. But when it comes to this time of the year, I'm reminded, 00:03:36.21\00:03:41.42 hands down, of the greatest miracle, ever performed and that's the birth of Jesus 00:03:41.45\00:03:47.22 Christ. The Immaculate Concepcion, the virgin birth, the incarnation of Jesus Christ. 00:03:47.26\00:03:55.16 God leaving the celestial courts of Heaven and coming down to this sin-infested Earth. 00:03:55.20\00:04:01.57 God becoming man. Friends, that's a miracle. And God becoming man is what this year, 00:04:01.60\00:04:10.61 time of year is all about. The birth of Jesus is the reason for Christmas. We said all the time, 00:04:10.65\00:04:18.65 Jesus is the reason for the season. Now I'm reminded, a lot of our folk may not like this 00:04:18.69\00:04:22.26 sermon because a lot of folks don't want to celebrate Christmas because they say Jesus 00:04:22.29\00:04:29.50 wasn't born on December 25th. And you know what? Jesus wasn't born on December 25th but for me 00:04:29.53\00:04:39.01 it really doesn't matter when He was born. I just thanked God that He was born. Are you 00:04:39.04\00:04:43.51 hearing what I'm saying? [Congregation: applause] 00:04:43.55\00:04:45.95 But then when we talk about Christmas, there are others who say Christmas has origins and 00:04:45.98\00:04:52.92 paganism and shouldn't be celebrated. They say that the practice of the yuletide 00:04:52.95\00:04:57.86 celebration and the yuletide law find its roots in the pagan practice of the North men's of 00:04:57.89\00:05:02.60 the ancient European days. But don't confuse the incarnation of the miracle of Jesus with the 00:05:02.63\00:05:10.24 empty idol worship of paganism. There's a difference between Santa Claus and Jesus. Santa is 00:05:10.27\00:05:21.42 fictitious but Jesus is the real thing. Santa lives at the North Pole but Jesus is everywhere. 00:05:21.45\00:05:26.62 Santa rides in on a sleigh but Jesus rides on the wind and He 00:05:26.65\00:05:33.43 walks on water. Santa comes only once a year but my Bible says, Jesus is a very present help in 00:05:33.46\00:05:40.50 time of trouble. You have to wait in line to see Santa but Jesus is as close as the mention 00:05:40.54\00:05:46.81 of His Name. All Santa can do is say Ho Ho Ho, but Jesus offers help, hope, and help. 00:05:46.84\00:05:52.78 Santa can make you laugh but Jesus can give you a joy that the world can't give and the 00:05:52.81\00:06:00.99 world can't take away. Santa puts gifts under your trees but it was Jesus who became our gift 00:06:01.02\00:06:10.57 and He died on Calvary tree. Santa is not real, but Jesus is the real thing. So in addition 00:06:10.60\00:06:20.21 to the miracle of God becoming man, God in this text is giving His people a sign of His power 00:06:20.24\00:06:28.98 to deliver. God told Ahaz in Isaiah 7:14, "Therefore the Lord Himself shall give a sign". 00:06:29.02\00:06:37.76 Now I don't know if you know what you just read or what I just read, but look at it one 00:06:37.79\00:06:41.43 more time. "Therefore the Lord Himself", not an impostor, not a fake, not a stand-in, 00:06:41.46\00:06:47.97 but the Lord Himself shall give you a sign, which means God didn't send an angel to do the 00:06:48.00\00:06:55.58 job. God didn't send a prophet to accomplish the task. 00:06:55.61\00:06:58.68 When God got ready to deliver you, when God got ready to 00:06:58.71\00:07:03.89 deliver me, when God got ready to deliver this world, God would give a sign that couldn't be 00:07:03.92\00:07:10.43 ignored. God would give a signal that couldn't be overlooked. God would send His best. 00:07:10.46\00:07:15.63 God would send Himself. God would send Jesus. "Therefore, the Lord Himself shall give you 00:07:15.66\00:07:24.31 a sign. Behold the virgins shall conceive, bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel. 00:07:24.34\00:07:29.78 " Everybody say, Emmanuel. [Congregation: Emmanuel.] 00:07:29.81\00:07:31.98 Which interpreted, God with us. In other words, God came to be 00:07:32.01\00:07:40.26 with us, But I'm here to say there are those who want to think that it's unnecessary to 00:07:40.29\00:07:47.20 believe in the virgin birth. But Matthew 1:18 says that "Before they", meaning Joseph and Mary, 00:07:47.23\00:07:54.77 "came together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit." That verse continues in 00:07:54.80\00:08:00.54 verse 19, it says that Joseph knew that he could not have been the father. The text says, "And 00:08:00.58\00:08:07.75 her husband, Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to 00:08:07.78\00:08:13.82 divorce her quietly." But even Mary herself knew that she was a virgin because Luke 1:34 says, 00:08:13.86\00:08:18.93 "She asked the angel, 'How would this be since I am a virgin?'" Now, there are three types, 00:08:18.96\00:08:26.74 there were three types of virgins in ancient Hebrew culture. Somebody says three 00:08:26.77\00:08:34.98 types. I thought a virgin was just a virgin. But there were three types of virgins in 00:08:35.01\00:08:40.32 ancient Hebrew culture. One was a virgin who had never been married. Everybody say never 00:08:40.35\00:08:41.92 married. [Congregation: Never married.] Number two. The second was a virgin who had decided to 00:08:41.95\00:08:47.09 remain a virgin for life. Everybody say virgin for life. [Congregation: Virgin for life.] 00:08:47.12\00:08:49.29 I'm so sorry for her husband. Come on, say amen. The third 00:08:49.32\00:08:54.96 type was Almah. A virgin who was married but had yet not consummated her marriage. In 00:08:55.00\00:09:04.47 Isaiah 7:14, the word Almah is used here. Isaiah said, "In Almah, a young virgin, would 00:09:04.51\00:09:11.78 bring forth a son." The way people got married in ancient Hebrew culture is very important 00:09:11.81\00:09:18.09 to the understanding of Mary's situation in the text. You see, back in the day and I praise God 00:09:18.12\00:09:25.69 it's not like this today, but when a guy wanted to marry a girl, but maybe I do like it 00:09:25.73\00:09:30.77 better now that I'm married 21 years and I have 3 daughters, maybe I do like this. 00:09:30.80\00:09:33.10 [Congregation: laugh] When a guy wanted to marry a girl, the guy had to go to his own father 00:09:33.13\00:09:38.04 and he told the father that he would like a particular girl's 00:09:38.07\00:09:44.08 hand in marriage. The boy's father would then go to the girl's father and say, "My son 00:09:44.11\00:09:51.09 would like to marry your daughter." If the girl agreed, the girl's father would 00:09:51.12\00:09:56.76 establish then a contract, and that contract would include provisions and stipulations. 00:09:56.79\00:10:01.03 And if the guy's father agreed with the contract, both fathers would sign and that would be 00:10:01.06\00:10:09.84 called the dowry. They then would have the ceremony. 00:10:09.87\00:10:13.38 The two fathers would bless the two kids and they would sign the contract officially before 00:10:13.41\00:10:20.68 witnesses and then each father would go back home with their 00:10:20.72\00:10:25.69 respective child. But after the ceremony, the two children would be pledged to marry. 00:10:25.72\00:10:31.19 So then even though she was already married, the girl couldn't go to her husband 00:10:31.23\00:10:37.57 nor can he go to her because the girl was too young. 00:10:37.60\00:10:41.74 In those days, girls were betrothed when they were 13 or 00:10:41.77\00:10:47.51 14 years old. So while the young woman was married but not yet with her husband, she was called 00:10:47.54\00:10:53.98 an Almah. So then when you read the Christmas story, that there was a young virgin named Mary 00:10:54.02\00:11:02.52 who was a spouse to Joseph, she was already married in a contract but they had yet 00:11:02.56\00:11:08.06 consummated the marriage, which then explains how Mary who had not yet had intercourse with 00:11:08.10\00:11:17.74 Joseph was pregnant by the Holy Ghost. Now, God could have birthed Jesus any way He wanted 00:11:17.77\00:11:28.35 to because He's God but there was a reason. A reason why Jesus had to have a virgin birth. 00:11:28.38\00:11:36.99 Jesus would have two natures. How many natures, everybody? [Congregation: Two.] 00:11:37.03\00:11:38.86 A human nature and a divine nature. He would experience all that we experience in our 00:11:38.89\00:11:46.40 humanity, but He would give us all that we need in His 00:11:46.43\00:11:49.97 Divinity. He was fully man because he came from Mary's womb, but He was fully God 00:11:50.01\00:11:57.85 because He was conceived by the Holy Ghost. It was necessary for Jesus to be born of a woman so 00:11:57.88\00:12:05.22 that He could be of the same nature as those He came to save, but it was also necessary for 00:12:05.25\00:12:08.62 Him to be conceived of the Holy Ghost so He could be holy, sinless, blameless, in order to 00:12:08.66\00:12:13.43 be the sacrificial lamb. Because then Jesus is born of Mary, He 00:12:13.46\00:12:18.70 is truly human. Because He is conceived by the Holy Ghost, He is free from sin, inherited sin, 00:12:18.73\00:12:26.11 handed down from Adam, and He can pay for our sins because He had no guilt or shame of His 00:12:26.14\00:12:32.31 own. Which means then, Jesus was like us but yet He was then 00:12:32.35\00:12:40.56 nothing like us. Jesus walked among us but yet He came from God above. Jesus grew up in 00:12:40.59\00:12:54.77 Nazareth but yet He became flesh and dwelt among us. Jesus, yes, He's our friend, but He's also 00:12:54.80\00:13:01.94 our Savior and our Lord. The virgin birth of Jesus shows the uniqueness of Christ 00:13:01.98\00:13:07.08 because no one else in Earth's history came into this world the 00:13:07.12\00:13:13.79 same way as Jesus. It hadn't happened to anybody before and it hasn't happened to anybody 00:13:13.82\00:13:18.46 since. So then, listen to me, this is why it's important as Christians to understand this. 00:13:18.49\00:13:22.36 When it comes to Christianity, the virgin birth is an essential aspect of our faith, 00:13:22.40\00:13:29.37 because if Jesus, listen to me, had come into this Earth the same way you and I did, 00:13:29.40\00:13:36.18 then He would have been born with original sin like you and 00:13:36.21\00:13:41.35 me. If Jesus had been born with original sin like you and me, 00:13:41.38\00:13:46.15 then He would not have been qualified to be the sinless sacrifice for our sins. 00:13:46.19\00:13:51.69 So then the miracle of Jesus' birth, the virgin birth, is the greatest of all miracles 00:13:51.73\00:13:59.07 because His virgin birth made our salvation possible, so Jesus had to be born of a virgin. 00:13:59.10\00:14:08.51 He couldn't have been born in any other way. But I praise God 00:14:08.54\00:14:17.45 for Joseph, why? Joseph could've gotten an attitude and said, "I'm not raising another man's 00:14:17.49\00:14:23.86 baby. I'm not raising a child who's impregnated by somebody else." According to Jewish law, 00:14:23.89\00:14:33.94 Joseph could have had Mary stoned. Joseph could have called the marriage off, but Joseph 00:14:33.97\00:14:39.31 didn't choose any of these options because Joseph was convinced that Mary an angel had 00:14:39.34\00:14:44.51 told him the truth. That the Holy Spirit had implanted baby Jesus inside of Mary's womb to 00:14:44.55\00:14:52.22 save His people from their sins. So then if we're not sure about the virgin birth of Christ, we 00:14:52.25\00:14:59.43 will not be sure about the divinity of Christ. If we're not sure about the virgin birth of 00:14:59.46\00:15:04.93 Christ, we will not be sure of our salvation. And so we celebrate the Christmas season 00:15:04.97\00:15:08.87 and it's important when we celebrate for us to strengthen our doctrinal belief in the 00:15:08.90\00:15:14.44 incarnation of Christ. For without the virgin birth, there 00:15:14.48\00:15:18.25 is no Christmas. Without the virgin birth, there is no Savior to save us from sin. 00:15:18.28\00:15:23.22 Mary bore the child, but God gave the Son. Mary bore Jesus but God gave the Christ. 00:15:23.25\00:15:31.09 Mary bore the body but God gave the Spirit. Mary is the mother of Jesus but Mary is not the 00:15:31.13\00:15:42.04 mother of God. Because Jesus' conception did not come from a sperm of a man but out of God 00:15:42.07\00:15:53.62 Himself, Jesus is without genealogy. He is the ancient of days. He is God without a 00:15:53.65\00:16:01.82 beginning and He is God without an end. He is Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last, the 00:16:01.86\00:16:14.04 Beginning and the End. He is the Beginner of the beginning. He is the Beginner in whom the 00:16:14.07\00:16:19.91 beginning began. He is the Beginning who did not begin to be. He is older than time, yet 00:16:19.94\00:16:23.41 younger than future. He is what He was. He is what He was what He is and what He was and is, He 00:16:23.45\00:16:27.55 will always be. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word 00:16:27.58\00:16:36.69 was God, and the Word became flesh." Christmas is about Jesus putting on a human body so that 00:16:36.73\00:16:44.53 He can come to this Earth and He could die for us and by His blood shed for us, you and I, we 00:16:44.57\00:16:52.44 can have salvation. And this is why we celebrate Christmas. I said this is why we celebrate 00:16:52.47\00:16:58.48 Christmas because of His awesome victory at Calvary. Listen to me good. Christ is the fulfillment 00:16:58.51\00:17:04.89 of the Genesis 3:15 promise, the first promise of the Bible. Remember the promise says, "And 00:17:04.92\00:17:10.43 I will put enmity between thee and the woman, between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise 00:17:10.46\00:17:19.77 thy head and thou shall bruise his heel." In other words, the seed of the woman is going to 00:17:19.80\00:17:27.58 crush the head of Satan. Let me say that one more time. I said the seed of the woman is going 00:17:27.61\00:17:34.55 to crush the head of Satan. But then wait a minute, Pastor Bert, let's stay in Hebrew culture. In 00:17:34.58\00:17:42.92 Hebrew culture, women didn't have seed. Men were the ones who had seed. Children are normally 00:17:42.96\00:17:49.16 referred to as the offspring or seed of the father, but in this first promise, God says that 00:17:49.20\00:17:52.23 she, the woman, is going to have seed. God, what are you talking about she's going to have seed? 00:17:52.27\00:18:03.18 Eve, your seed, is going to crush Satan's head but what Eve doesn't know is that she's not 00:18:03.21\00:18:16.26 the woman who's going to produce the seed. She's a woman but she's not "the woman." The 00:18:16.29\00:18:24.80 promise says a virgin shall be with child and bear a son and shall call his name Emmanuel. So 00:18:24.83\00:18:28.37 then Genesis 3:15 is the first promise of the first coming of Jesus and the first promise of 00:18:28.40\00:18:32.04 the second coming of Jesus. The promise is I'm going to put enmity, hatred between you and 00:18:32.07\00:18:35.58 the woman. And when God talks about enmity, when God talks about crushing head and bruising 00:18:35.61\00:18:46.42 heel, He's talking about the first coming at Calvary and the second coming of Jesus. Now, 00:18:46.45\00
