[music] 00:00:18.66\00:00:21.73 Pastor Byrd: I want to welcome those who watch in the services 00:00:21.73\00:00:23.80 at the Oakwood University Church, Breath of Life Ministry, 00:00:23.80\00:00:26.56 and we want you to turn in your Bibles now 00:00:26.56\00:00:28.70 to the book of Job. 00:00:28.70\00:00:29.26 Job chapter 13, just one verse, Job chapter 13, verse 15. 00:00:29.26\00:00:41.26 I wanted to preach this this week because there's been 00:00:41.26\00:00:44.56 a lot of death in our church, a lot of sickness, and so I 00:00:44.56\00:00:49.50 believe that we need a healing Word in a hurting world. 00:00:49.50\00:00:54.50 Can you say amen? 00:00:54.50\00:00:55.53 Aud.: Amen. 00:00:55.53\00:00:56.53 PB: When I first arrived here over two years ago, 00:00:56.53\00:00:59.23 you'll remember my first year here we 00:00:59.23\00:01:01.30 had 34 funerals. 00:01:01.30\00:01:03.86 It just seems that they come in bunches, and now this week 00:01:03.86\00:01:06.90 it appears that they're coming in bunches, and so I just have 00:01:06.90\00:01:11.10 one verse that I would encourage you with today, 00:01:11.10\00:01:14.93 and that's taken from Job 13, verse number 15. 00:01:14.93\00:01:22.80 Job 13:15, the Word of God says, "Though he slay me, 00:01:22.80\00:01:29.43 yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain 00:01:29.43\00:01:36.50 mine own ways before him." 00:01:36.50\00:01:39.70 Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him. 00:01:39.70\00:01:46.70 Today you've got to learn how to trust without limits. 00:01:46.70\00:01:52.30 [Aud. reaction] PB: Father in heaven, Lord, 00:01:52.30\00:01:53.56 now breathe on us, speak for Your servants here. 00:01:53.56\00:01:56.66 Hide us behind Your cross, may Your Holy Ghost bring today, 00:01:56.66\00:02:00.66 bring healing, bring comfort, to Thy people we pray. 00:02:00.66\00:02:07.63 In Jesus' name, amen. 00:02:07.63\00:02:09.36 Aud.: Amen. 00:02:09.36\00:02:10.86 PB: The book of Job is one of the oldest books 00:02:10.86\00:02:16.96 in the Bible. 00:02:16.96\00:02:18.93 In fact, though the book of Job is placed in the Bible 00:02:18.93\00:02:21.66 after the book of Esther and before the book of Psalms, 00:02:21.66\00:02:25.06 many theologians believe that the book of Job was written 00:02:25.06\00:02:29.03 after Exodus, and so its authorship is ascribed to Moses. 00:02:29.03\00:02:34.73 Remember, the Bible is not written 00:02:34.73\00:02:39.10 in chronological order. 00:02:39.10\00:02:41.50 All the things in Genesis did not necessarily happen 00:02:41.50\00:02:45.86 first, and all the things in Revelation 00:02:45.86\00:02:48.40 did not necessarily happen last because how could 00:02:48.40\00:02:51.96 war in heaven with Satan being thrown out of heaven, 00:02:51.96\00:02:55.26 as written in Revelation, happen after the fall of man, 00:02:55.26\00:02:59.16 as written in Genesis? 00:02:59.16\00:03:01.13 [Aud. reaction]: PB: Yes, Genesis 00:03:01.13\00:03:03.33 comes before Revelation, but Satan's fall from heaven 00:03:03.33\00:03:07.20 happened before Adam and Eve ate fruit. 00:03:07.20\00:03:12.30 Because they couldn't have been deceived to eat fruit 00:03:12.30\00:03:15.16 if Satan hadn't fallen in the first place. 00:03:15.16\00:03:18.26 The book of Job tells the story about a man who 00:03:18.26\00:03:23.40 had everything. 00:03:23.40\00:03:24.53 Lost everything. 00:03:24.53\00:03:28.36 But in the end got everything plus interest back. 00:03:28.36\00:03:32.83 Do I have a witness in this place? 00:03:32.83\00:03:34.83 [Aud. reaction]: PB: In the book of Job, 00:03:34.83\00:03:36.83 you will discover that disaster took his fortune. 00:03:36.83\00:03:40.20 Disease tortured his flesh. 00:03:40.20\00:03:43.00 Death touched his family. 00:03:43.00\00:03:46.23 Deceit turned his friends. 00:03:46.23\00:03:49.20 But God's deliverance gave him double for his trouble. 00:03:49.20\00:03:53.56 [Aud. reaction]: PB: Let this be a reminder 00:03:53.56\00:03:55.63 for us. 00:03:55.63\00:03:56.63 I don't care how rough it gets, I don't care how tough it gets, 00:03:56.63\00:04:01.53 no weapon formed against you is going to prosper. 00:04:01.53\00:04:07.00 Somebody knows that if God be for us, who can be against us? 00:04:07.00\00:04:13.40 Job, however, is not remembered 00:04:13.40\00:04:16.10 for his triumphs. 00:04:16.10\00:04:17.83 Job is remembered for his trials. 00:04:17.83\00:04:21.23 The story of Job is not a fairy tale. 00:04:21.23\00:04:24.53 Job is not some fictitious figure of the past, 00:04:24.53\00:04:28.30 Job was a real man who lived in a real world, 00:04:28.30\00:04:32.26 who faced real problems and fought a real devil. 00:04:32.26\00:04:36.46 Job was a man of flesh and blood, just like you and me. 00:04:36.46\00:04:40.33 Job lost the three things that are considered signs 00:04:40.33\00:04:43.26 of a man's well-being. 00:04:43.26\00:04:44.40 Number one, he lost his wealth. 00:04:44.40\00:04:46.80 He lost his health. 00:04:46.80\00:04:49.43 And then, he also lost his family. 00:04:49.43\00:04:53.90 In one 24-hour period, Job's life is turned upside-down. 00:04:53.90\00:04:59.73 Job has lost everything that he worked for his entire life. 00:04:59.73\00:05:03.96 In one day it's all gone. 00:05:03.96\00:05:05.76 Job's own wife said, "Why don't you just go ahead 00:05:05.76\00:05:08.36 and curse God and die?" 00:05:08.36\00:05:11.60 Job received bad news on top of bad news. 00:05:11.60\00:05:16.66 The devil said, "Okay, just watch now. 00:05:16.66\00:05:20.56 Just watch him, because he's now about to have a cussin' 00:05:20.56\00:05:24.26 fit and turn away from God." 00:05:24.26\00:05:27.00 The Bible says Job was a righteous man. 00:05:27.00\00:05:31.93 [Aud. reaction]: PB: Job did not turn from God 00:05:31.93\00:05:35.16 when bad things started happening to him. 00:05:35.16\00:05:37.53 It was Job who said, "Though he slay me, 00:05:37.53\00:05:41.73 yet will I trust in him." 00:05:41.73\00:05:45.16 In other words, God, you can kill me, but I'm not leaving 00:05:45.16\00:05:48.90 You. 00:05:48.90\00:05:49.90 God, I'm not going anywhere. 00:05:49.90\00:05:52.53 Trust in You is more important than living is to me, because 00:05:52.53\00:05:56.80 even in the depths of his sorrow, Job mourns more over 00:05:56.80\00:05:59.40 what seems to be his loss of God than he does over 00:05:59.40\00:06:02.56 the loss of his prosperity and family. 00:06:02.56\00:06:05.00 To live is Christ. 00:06:05.00\00:06:06.76 To die is gain. 00:06:06.76\00:06:09.80 After Job loses everything, after Job's wife tells him 00:06:09.80\00:06:13.26 to curse God and die. 00:06:13.26\00:06:14.30 The Bible says that Job rent his mantle, shaves his head, 00:06:14.30\00:06:20.70 falls down to the ground and then he starts worshiping 00:06:20.70\00:06:24.76 and praising God. 00:06:24.76\00:06:26.66 I believe that I've got a witness in this place that 00:06:26.66\00:06:30.30 knows that some of your best worship is when you're broken. 00:06:30.30\00:06:35.86 When everything in your life is breaking loose. 00:06:35.86\00:06:38.76 Because that's when the Master Mender puts everything back 00:06:38.76\00:06:43.13 together again. 00:06:43.13\00:06:44.13 Do I have a witness in this place? 00:06:44.13\00:06:46.13 [Aud. reaction]: PB: That's why 00:06:46.13\00:06:48.13 I'm a praiser. 00:06:48.13\00:06:49.13 That's why I'm a worshiper. 00:06:49.13\00:06:50.33 That's why I lift my hands and I bless Him. 00:06:50.33\00:06:53.13 Not just when I'm in trouble but when things are also going 00:06:53.13\00:06:56.76 well, because in the good times, praise His name. 00:06:56.76\00:06:59.73 [Aud. reaction]: PB: In the bad times, 00:06:59.73\00:07:01.80 we've got to do the same. 00:07:01.80\00:07:02.80 In everything, give the King of Kings all the praise. 00:07:02.80\00:07:06.03 But in the middle of the book, Job gets into a conversation 00:07:06.03\00:07:11.30 with his friends. 00:07:11.30\00:07:12.53 His friends suggest that because of his troubles, that in some 00:07:12.53\00:07:18.60 form or fashion he must have sinned against God. 00:07:18.60\00:07:23.56 Job and his friends were stepped in the tradition that 00:07:23.56\00:07:25.80 claimed suffering was always a punishment for a specific sin, 00:07:25.80\00:07:29.66 but the philosophy of suffering as set forth by the friends 00:07:29.66\00:07:32.33 of Job was not correct. 00:07:32.33\00:07:33.86 Listen to me carefully. 00:07:33.86\00:07:34.86 As a child of God you must always distinguish between 00:07:34.86\00:07:38.33 the truth of an infinite God versus the faulty ideas 00:07:38.33\00:07:41.60 expressed by infinite speakers. 00:07:41.60\00:07:44.76 Aud.: Amen. 00:07:44.76\00:07:45.96 PB: Rain falls on the just and the unjust. 00:07:45.96\00:07:51.76 Just because you love God doesn't mean 00:07:51.76\00:07:54.76 you won't have trouble. 00:07:54.76\00:07:55.76 Aud.: Amen. 00:07:55.76\00:07:56.76 PB: Just because you go to church doesn't mean 00:07:56.76\00:07:59.36 everything is going to be peaches and cream. 00:07:59.36\00:08:01.93 Some people think that if they serve God, if they worship 00:08:01.93\00:08:05.03 God, if they praise God that your marriage will always 00:08:05.03\00:08:07.86 be great, your kids will be great, 00:08:07.86\00:08:09.86 your finances will be great, your job will be great 00:08:09.86\00:08:12.16 and your health will be great. 00:08:12.16\00:08:13.20 But the Bible says that they that live godly lives are going 00:08:13.20\00:08:16.60 to suffer persecution. 00:08:16.60\00:08:17.96 [Aud. reaction]: PB: Which means, 00:08:17.96\00:08:20.96 you can believe God and still go through trouble. 00:08:20.96\00:08:25.33 You can believe God and still go through tests. 00:08:25.33\00:08:28.50 Go through trials, go through persecution, 00:08:28.50\00:08:30.90 adversities, perplexities and complexities, 00:08:30.90\00:08:33.00 because just because you have a connection with God doesn't 00:08:33.00\00:08:36.83 mean you won't go through trouble. 00:08:36.83\00:08:39.10 Aud.: Amen. 00:08:39.10\00:08:40.10 PB: In life I've learned things happen. 00:08:40.10\00:08:45.13 Stuff happens. 00:08:45.13\00:08:47.70 It happens to good people. 00:08:47.70\00:08:49.00 It happens to bad people. 00:08:49.00\00:08:52.10 It happens to old people, to young people. 00:08:52.10\00:08:54.33 It happens to rich people, it happens to poor people, 00:08:54.33\00:08:57.90 it happens to black people, it happens to white people, 00:08:57.90\00:09:02.00 it happens to everybody in spite of your commitment 00:09:02.00\00:09:05.40 to the church. 00:09:05.40\00:09:06.40 In spite of the fact that you return tithes and offerings, 00:09:06.40\00:09:09.93 in spite of the fact that you may sing in the choir or usher 00:09:09.93\00:09:12.46 in the church, trouble will still come. 00:09:12.46\00:09:14.76 [Aud. reaction]: PB: But you understand 00:09:14.76\00:09:16.76 you have to go through something where your faith 00:09:16.76\00:09:20.33 is tried. 00:09:20.33\00:09:22.46 Faith is not proven in abundance. 00:09:22.46\00:09:26.70 Faith is proved in lack. 00:09:26.70\00:09:30.60 Tough times. 00:09:30.60\00:09:32.46 Dark days. 00:09:32.46\00:09:33.73 Faith is proven when the lights are out, not when the lights 00:09:33.73\00:09:36.90 are on. 00:09:36.90\00:09:38.00 When your tuition is due and your money is low. 00:09:38.00\00:09:40.53 When the cancer has been found. 00:09:40.53\00:09:44.13 When you're standing there in divorce court, when your 00:09:44.13\00:09:46.73 friends have walled out on you, God you see cannot let you 00:09:46.73\00:09:50.40 go through life easily, because that wouldn't build 00:09:50.40\00:09:52.63 your faith. 00:09:52.63\00:09:53.63 Aud.: Amen. 00:09:53.63\00:09:54.63 PB: And so God will let you experience and get in trouble 00:09:54.63\00:09:57.73 so He can teach you how to survive trouble 00:09:57.73\00:09:59.73 and its attack. 00:09:59.73\00:10:01.26 Job quickly goes through three cycles of conversation 00:10:01.26\00:10:05.36 with his so-called friends. 00:10:05.36\00:10:06.80 Eliphaz, Bildad, Zophar, and then the Bible says Elihu 00:10:06.80\00:10:12.66 shares four speeches. 00:10:12.66\00:10:14.76 In a nutshell, these so-called friends tell Brother Job 00:10:14.76\00:10:19.06 that his suffering is linked to sin. 00:10:19.06\00:10:22.36 But Job is not aware of this sin, and so Job 00:10:22.36\00:10:26.00 was faced with the predicament of finding an explanation 00:10:26.00\00:10:29.66 for his misfortune. 00:10:29.66\00:10:31.46 Can you imagine, friends of mine, losing everything you 00:10:31.46\00:10:34.10 had? 00:10:34.10\00:10:36.43 Everything gone. 00:10:36.43\00:10:38.86 Your health, gone. 00:10:38.86\00:10:39.86 Your wealth, gone. 00:10:39.86\00:10:40.86 Your family, gone. 00:10:40.86\00:10:41.86 And then on top of that your so-called friends, who you've 00:10:41.86\00:10:45.06 given money to help out, come by and folks you helped, 00:10:45.06\00:10:50.60 because you do know the people you help the most appreciate 00:10:50.60\00:10:52.76 it the least. 00:10:52.76\00:10:54.13 [Aud. reaction]: PB: The people you've helped 00:10:54.13\00:10:59.93 come by and instead of saying "God bless you, 00:10:59.93\00:11:03.86 Brother," or, "We're praying for you, Brother," 00:11:03.86\00:11:08.40 they say no, we're just going to criticize you by saying 00:11:08.40\00:11:11.03 "The reason, Job, you're going through this must be because 00:11:11.03\00:11:15.63 you're not right with God." 00:11:15.63\00:11:18.90 The text, Job 13, expounds on the second cycle 00:11:18.90\00:11:22.90 of conversations with Job and his friends. 00:11:22.90\00:11:27.43 But after charges of being accused a sinner, my friends, 00:11:27.43\00:11:30.56 Job then says, "Let me respond." 00:11:30.56\00:11:34.20 In verse 1 and 2, Job confirms that he has seen and heard 00:11:34.20\00:11:38.06 the same thing that his friend Zophar has. 00:11:38.06\00:11:41.10 Job is not ignorant of the things that are taking 00:11:41.10\00:11:43.66 place around him, nor is he ignorant 00:11:43.66\00:11:45.66 of the theology of the day. 00:11:45.66\00:11:46.80 In verse 4, Job tells his friends, "Look, I've talked 00:11:46.80\00:11:50.33 to you enough. 00:11:50.33\00:11:51.73 I'm tired of talking to you, let me know take you 00:11:51.73\00:11:55.36 to the top. 00:11:55.36\00:11:56.96 Let me take it and talk to the One who says 00:11:56.96\00:11:59.50 the buck stops here." 00:11:59.50\00:12:02.26 Job has already heard what his friends have had to say, 00:12:02.26\00:12:05.46 and they are of no help, so now he says, 00:12:05.46\00:12:07.53 "Let me speak to the One who's in charge." 00:12:07.53\00:12:10.96 In verse number 4 then, Job goes on the offensive. 00:12:10.96\00:12:15.36 He has listened to the "wisdom" of his friends and now 00:12:15.36\00:12:20.03 he wants to speak. 00:12:20.03\00:12:21.46 You see, I must admit, I'm a little like Job. 00:12:21.46\00:12:24.50 Job was one who believed, if you're going to say what 00:12:24.50\00:12:26.96 you're going to say, then in the spirit 00:12:26.96\00:12:29.26 of reciprocity let me say what I'm going to say. 00:12:29.26\00:12:32.10 And because of this, you're going to listen. 00:12:32.10\00:12:34.76 Do I have a witness in this place? 00:12:34.76\00:12:36.76 [Aud. reaction]: PB: The Bible says Job 00:12:36.76\00:12:38.76 calls them worthless liars. 00:12:38.76\00:12:40.10 He calls them worthless doctors. 00:12:40.10\00:12:45.10 Job calls his friends worthless physicians because 00:12:45.10\00:12:48.30 they have given advice, but they have no cure for it. 00:12:48.30\00:12:52.50 We know a lot of times what the problem is, but if you don't 00:12:52.50\00:12:57.83 have a solution then I suggest you just ought to be quiet. 00:12:57.83\00:13:02.13 He says that the wisest thing you can do is sit down 00:13:02.13\00:13:06.33 somewhere and listen. 00:13:06.33\00:13:08.93 So Job then begins to ask his friends a series 00:13:08.93\00:13:12.33 of rhetorical questions. 00:13:12.33\00:13:14.33 Number one, in verse 7, he says, "Will you speak falsely 00:13:14.33\00:13:18.53 for God?" 00:13:18.53\00:13:20.03 Verse 8, he says, "Are you God's mouthpiece?" 00:13:20.03\00:13:24.36 Verse 9, he says, "When it's all said and done, where will 00:13:24.36\00:13:28.30 you stand with God? 00:13:28.30\00:13:31.80 And so, in verse 12 Job tells his friends that their wisdom 00:13:31.80\00:13:34.33 is nothing more than ashes and clay. 00:13:34.33\00:13:36.43 Job asks his friends to let him speak. 00:13:36.43\00:13:38.43 He says that once he says what he has to say, 00:13:38.43\00:13:40.43 then let the chips fall where they may. 00:13:40.43\00:13:43.76 And so he comes to the text of Scripture. 00:13:43.76\00:13:46.76 In verse number 15, "Though he slay me, 00:13:46.76\00:13:51.86 yet will I trust in him." 00:13:51.86\00:13:58.70 I like the way the Holman Christian Standard Bible 00:13:58.70\00:14:01.06 puts it. 00:14:01.06\00:14:02.06 It says, "Even if God kills me, I will have hope in him." 00:14:02.06\00:14:09.03 Regardless of what comes my way, I still will have hope 00:14:09.03\00:14:13.16 in God. 00:14:13.16\00:14:14.16 Hallelujah, friends of mine. 00:14:14.16\00:14:15.50 So then, what do you do when trouble strikes? 00:14:15.50\00:14:19.76 What do you do when the bottom falls out? 00:14:19.76\00:14:25.86 What do you do when you feel like throwing in the towel? 00:14:25.86\00:14:30.36 What do you do when you've been diagnosed with cancer 00:14:30.36\00:14:33.83 or some incurable disease? 00:14:33.83\00:14:35.50 What do you do when you or someone you love has been 00:14:35.50\00:14:39.90 diagnosed with HIV. 00:14:39.90\00:14:41.86 What do you do when your loved one dies? 00:14:41.86\00:14:47.70 What do you do when your daughter dies, when she's only 00:14:47.70\00:14:51.66 four months old? 00:14:51.66\00:14:55.93 What do you do? 00:14:55.93\00:14:58.76 Three things I want to suggest to you then Iím going to sit 00:14:58.76\00:14:59.93 down. 00:14:59.93\00:15:01.80 Number one, and this is no theological masterpiece. 00:15:01.80\00:15:06.16 When trouble comes, you've got to learn how to trust God. 00:15:06.16\00:15:10.40 [Aud. reaction]:
