? (Theme Song) ? ? Jesus is worthy ? 00:00:03.13\00:00:12.33 ? oh yes, he's worthy ? ? worthy of all... ? 00:00:12.33\00:00:19.43 ? all the praise... ? Pastor Byrd: We talk about 00:00:19.43\00:00:23.20 what's appropriate and what's inappropriate. 00:00:23.20\00:00:25.73 Noted Adventist historian Ronald Graybill, in his 00:00:25.73\00:00:28.56 article "Enthusiasm in Early Adventist Worship," written 00:00:28.56\00:00:31.50 in "Ministry Magazine," by the way -- 00:00:31.50\00:00:33.50 that's the magazine from the G.C. to the preachers, 00:00:33.50\00:00:35.50 says that our spiritual ancestors had livelier services 00:00:35.50\00:00:38.80 than many of us would be comfortable 00:00:38.80\00:00:40.80 with today. 00:00:40.80\00:00:42.43 That's what he says. 00:00:42.43\00:00:43.90 He says that if those who view the Adventist pioneers 00:00:43.90\00:00:46.66 as cold, stoic and stiff liturgists could turn back 00:00:46.66\00:00:50.36 the clock and visit a 19th-century Adventist 00:00:50.36\00:00:52.73 worship service, they would be shocked 00:00:52.73\00:00:54.73 at what they would hear. 00:00:54.73\00:00:57.13 Now, he says, while the use of musical instruments was 00:00:57.13\00:01:00.40 not a major factor, and you need to know why it wasn't 00:01:00.40\00:01:03.10 a major factor -- let me explain. 00:01:03.10\00:01:05.10 It wasn't a major factor, he says, because many 00:01:05.10\00:01:07.10 of the early Adventist groups met in homes where no musical 00:01:07.10\00:01:10.56 instruments were present because they couldn't afford 00:01:10.56\00:01:15.06 to buy musical instruments, or they lacked the skill 00:01:15.06\00:01:17.06 to play them. 00:01:17.06\00:01:18.06 In fact, in the early Methodist church, 00:01:18.06\00:01:20.50 the Methodist congregation that Ellen White once belonged 00:01:20.50\00:01:23.53 to was one of the first to buy and install an organ 00:01:23.53\00:01:26.96 in their church. 00:01:26.96\00:01:29.00 And she was criticized for doing it. 00:01:29.00\00:01:32.13 Why? 00:01:32.13\00:01:33.13 Not because it was spiritually wrong, but because 00:01:33.13\00:01:35.70 nobody had ever done it before. 00:01:35.70\00:01:37.70 Ronald Graybill continues, he says, the music of that era 00:01:39.63\00:01:42.86 was rhythmic, enthusiastic, repetitious, and possessed 00:01:42.86\00:01:47.13 broad appeal. 00:01:47.13\00:01:48.13 He says the singing was pervasive, provided a powerful 00:01:48.13\00:01:50.13 emotional stimulant, and served the same pragmatic 00:01:50.13\00:01:52.90 function as the music of the frontier revival tradition. 00:01:52.90\00:01:55.86 Adventist pioneer Jeannie Ayars Kellogg, in her article 00:01:55.86\00:01:58.80 "Growing Up With the Third Angel's Message," as recorded 00:01:58.80\00:02:01.26 in the "Adventist Review," said that almost all 00:02:01.26\00:02:03.53 of the early Adventist meetings she attended began 00:02:03.53\00:02:06.26 with singing. 00:02:06.26\00:02:08.16 Singing. 00:02:08.16\00:02:09.16 She said they were full of hearty singing throughout. 00:02:09.16\00:02:12.76 They ended, she said, with hand-shaking, they ended 00:02:12.76\00:02:16.16 with hugging, and they ended with hearty singing. 00:02:16.16\00:02:18.66 According to her, most of the catchy tunes 00:02:18.66\00:02:21.96 of the early Adventist church reflected the ardent hope 00:02:21.96\00:02:25.16 of the soon return of Jesus Christ. 00:02:25.16\00:02:27.30 Since the imminent return of Jesus was the core belief 00:02:27.30\00:02:30.83 that united early Adventists, early Adventists opted 00:02:30.83\00:02:34.56 to discard the primary use of European hymns for music 00:02:34.56\00:02:38.00 that more accurately reflected the contemporary hopes, 00:02:38.00\00:02:41.96 aspirations, dreams and disappointments 00:02:41.96\00:02:45.43 of the church. 00:02:45.43\00:02:46.56 They chose to employ musical styles that were solidly 00:02:46.56\00:02:49.33 grounded in Jesus Christ but were more in touch 00:02:49.33\00:02:53.43 with current popular forms. 00:02:53.43\00:02:55.73 Early Adventists sang gospel tunes to well-known secular 00:02:55.73\00:02:59.60 notes. 00:02:59.60\00:03:01.16 You don't believe me? 00:03:01.16\00:03:03.10 Our Seventh-day Adventist hymnals. 00:03:03.10\00:03:05.30 Today's popular songs such as "What Child is This?" 00:03:05.30\00:03:09.13 "How Sweet Are the Tidings." 00:03:09.13\00:03:11.43 Both of these songs borrow their direct melodies 00:03:11.43\00:03:14.06 from popular secular tunes. 00:03:14.06\00:03:16.46 Which means it can't, that it's the music 00:03:16.46\00:03:20.23 that's Christian. 00:03:20.23\00:03:21.33 We always talk about what's Christian and what's not. 00:03:21.33\00:03:23.53 We've got to listen to the words. 00:03:23.53\00:03:25.53 Early Adventists were also vocal worshipers. 00:03:25.53\00:03:27.76 Ellen White, in a letter written in 1876, after 00:03:27.76\00:03:29.96 attending Adventist camp meetings from Kansas 00:03:29.96\00:03:31.96 to Minnesota, declared, "I saw singing to the glory of God 00:03:31.96\00:03:34.66 often drove away the enemy." 00:03:34.66\00:03:36.66 Drove away the enemy, she said, and shouting 00:03:39.73\00:03:43.53 would beat him back. 00:03:43.53\00:03:44.73 Beat him back. 00:03:44.73\00:03:47.83 Beat him back. 00:03:47.83\00:03:48.83 And would give the victory. 00:03:48.83\00:03:50.50 She said, I saw there was too little glorifying God in Israel 00:03:50.50\00:03:54.86 and too little childlike simplicity. 00:03:54.86\00:03:58.00 So, Pastor Byrd, so Ellen White didn't condemn 00:03:58.00\00:04:01.70 fervent singing or musical instruments or shouting, 00:04:01.70\00:04:03.83 for that matter. 00:04:03.83\00:04:04.83 But Pastor Byrd, what about what Ellen White said about 00:04:04.83\00:04:07.66 the Indiana Flesh Heresy Movement of 1900 and her 00:04:07.66\00:04:11.43 terms "the bedlam of noise"? 00:04:11.43\00:04:13.80 Now, remember, read it carefully. 00:04:13.80\00:04:17.30 If you will read what she wrote about the bedlam 00:04:17.30\00:04:20.16 of noise, number one, she was writing a letter 00:04:20.16\00:04:22.86 to a specific person. 00:04:22.86\00:04:24.90 In her writing a letter to a specific person, 00:04:24.90\00:04:27.60 she was writing a letter to the person based on 00:04:27.60\00:04:29.83 what they had told her, which means Ellen White 00:04:29.83\00:04:32.86 was not an eyewitness to what transpired at that 00:04:32.86\00:04:35.73 Indiana camp meeting. 00:04:35.73\00:04:37.10 Somebody wrote a letter to her and, based on what they 00:04:37.10\00:04:40.60 had written to her, she responded to them. 00:04:40.60\00:04:45.13 Careful contextual study of this incident will reveal 00:04:45.13\00:04:47.60 that Ellen White and the Holy Flesh Heresy condemned 00:04:47.60\00:04:51.93 the doctrinal fallacies of the Holy Flesh Heresy. 00:04:51.93\00:04:54.23 The people were believing, they were believing 00:04:54.23\00:04:58.06 that Jesus had attained holy flesh in Gethsemane 00:04:58.06\00:05:01.86 like that of Adam before the fall. 00:05:01.86\00:05:04.96 Likewise, the people erroneously believed 00:05:04.96\00:05:07.93 that when revived by the Holy Ghost, they would never die. 00:05:07.93\00:05:10.63 You don't believe me, look it up in the SDA Encyclopedia. 00:05:10.63\00:05:13.93 Now, in this incident, Ellen White in "Selected Messages," 00:05:13.93\00:05:16.83 page 31, condemned the extreme use of emotive 00:05:16.83\00:05:21.83 elements that produce scenes of insanity and utter confusion 00:05:21.83\00:05:26.00 in the Holy Flesh Heresy. 00:05:26.00\00:05:27.96 She said people were shouting, people were praying and singing 00:05:27.96\00:05:33.33 until somebody in the congregation would fall 00:05:33.33\00:05:36.10 prostrate and unconscious from his or her seat. 00:05:36.10\00:05:39.66 Then, she said, one or two men walking up and down 00:05:39.66\00:05:42.96 the aisle for this purpose, would drag the fallen 00:05:42.96\00:05:45.73 person up on the rostrum. 00:05:45.73\00:05:48.23 She said then about 12 people, a dozen individuals, 00:05:48.23\00:05:51.40 would gather around the prostrate body, 00:05:51.40\00:05:53.40 some singing, some shouting, some praying, 00:05:53.40\00:05:56.30 all at the same time. 00:05:56.30\00:05:58.90 Now, let me be clear. 00:05:58.90\00:06:00.83 I would be the first person to say that if we sang, 00:06:00.83\00:06:04.70 preached, prayed and shouted at the same time, until 00:06:04.70\00:06:12.33 somebody fell unconscious and they're unconscious from 00:06:12.33\00:06:16.20 their seat, and they brought their unconscious body up 00:06:16.20\00:06:19.03 here by me, and we stand over them and we start singing, 00:06:19.03\00:06:22.86 shouting, preaching and praying at the same time, 00:06:22.86\00:06:25.80 something would be wrong with us. 00:06:25.80\00:06:28.80 But let's not take her writings out of context. 00:06:30.83\00:06:32.90 Ellen White did not endorse worship experiences that were 00:06:32.90\00:06:37.83 too weighted toward emotion. 00:06:37.83\00:06:40.06 But she also constantly challenged the tendency 00:06:40.06\00:06:43.00 of some to trust experience and feeling. 00:06:43.00\00:06:46.33 What did Ellen White promote, then? 00:06:46.33\00:06:49.00 Balance. 00:06:49.00\00:06:51.50 Balance. 00:06:51.50\00:06:54.40 Ronald Graybill in his article "Enthusiasm in Early Adventist 00:06:54.40\00:06:57.50 Worship" said that even in her condemnation 00:06:57.50\00:07:00.50 of the issues of emotion in the Holy Flesh Heresy, 00:07:00.50\00:07:03.06 Ellen White left proper room for the use of these emotional 00:07:03.06\00:07:06.00 components and instruments of worship, declaring that 00:07:06.00\00:07:08.50 if conducted right, they would be a blessing. 00:07:08.50\00:07:12.90 Which further illustrates for us today why we need balance 00:07:12.90\00:07:15.90 in our worship. 00:07:15.90\00:07:16.90 You hear me say it at Oakwood all the time. 00:07:16.90\00:07:18.90 We need something for everyone. 00:07:18.90\00:07:21.73 We need law and grace. 00:07:21.73\00:07:25.33 We need redemption and relationship. 00:07:25.33\00:07:30.33 We need cognition and emotion. 00:07:30.33\00:07:34.36 We need information and inspiration. 00:07:34.36\00:07:38.76 We need integrity and intensity. 00:07:38.76\00:07:42.96 We need Amen and we need Hallelujah. 00:07:42.96\00:07:47.46 We need the Holy Scriptures, but we also need 00:07:47.46\00:07:51.50 the Holy Ghost. 00:07:51.50\00:07:52.50 It's my baptized brain that makes me want to shout. 00:07:52.50\00:07:56.63 It's my sanctified psyche that makes me say glory. 00:07:56.63\00:08:00.16 We need something for everyone. 00:08:00.16\00:08:02.20 Do I have a witness in this place? 00:08:02.20\00:08:06.26 When Israel used the string instruments, the horns, 00:08:06.26\00:08:09.16 the trumpets, everything had to have synergy. 00:08:09.16\00:08:15.20 It had to be in harmony. 00:08:15.20\00:08:17.50 It had to be in intonation. 00:08:17.50\00:08:22.30 It could not be in dissonance. 00:08:22.30\00:08:25.56 It had to be in harmony, because their music was 00:08:25.56\00:08:29.33 the representation of the harmony 00:08:29.33\00:08:31.33 among the people. 00:08:31.33\00:08:32.56 So when the people played in harmony, they said, let's 00:08:32.56\00:08:36.43 play in harmony because if we play in harmony we send 00:08:36.43\00:08:39.90 the enemy a message that we're together. 00:08:39.90\00:08:44.13 We send the enemy a message that we, along with God, 00:08:44.13\00:08:49.63 are together. 00:08:49.63\00:08:50.63 That's why when you read Psalm 137, when they 00:08:50.63\00:08:52.96 were taken into exile, their captain said, 00:08:52.96\00:08:55.26 "Sing us one of those songs out of Zion." 00:08:55.26\00:08:57.50 They said, "How can we sing the Lord's song 00:08:57.50\00:08:59.50 in a strange land? 00:08:59.50\00:09:01.06 How can we sing this in a place where there is no 00:09:01.06\00:09:03.16 harmony, where there is no unity." And so regardless of 00:09:03.16\00:09:06.33 the instrument, regardless of what you praise God with, 00:09:06.33\00:09:09.16 regardless of how you praise God, it must be done in 00:09:09.16\00:09:11.43 unity. 00:09:11.43\00:09:12.43 There must be harmony, because if there is no harmony, 00:09:12.43\00:09:14.43 then God rejects it. 00:09:14.43\00:09:15.43 Praise God with the sound of the trumpet. 00:09:15.43\00:09:19.26 Praise him with the psaltry and the harp. 00:09:19.26\00:09:22.00 Praise him with the stringed instruments and organs. 00:09:22.00\00:09:24.00 Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon 00:09:24.00\00:09:26.23 the high sounding cymbals. 00:09:26.23\00:09:28.13 But make certain that when you praise him, 00:09:28.13\00:09:30.36 there is harmony. 00:09:30.36\00:09:32.13 So let me make this practical. 00:09:32.13\00:09:34.06 Everybody say harmony. 00:09:34.06\00:09:35.26 Come on, say harmony. 00:09:35.26\00:09:37.26 All right, Uncle Jimmy, I'm ready. 00:09:37.26\00:09:40.30 Lower register, give me an A-flat. 00:09:40.30\00:09:42.40 [Organ] Give me a C, give me 00:09:42.40\00:09:44.40 an E-flat. 00:09:44.40\00:09:45.40 Everybody say harmony. 00:09:45.40\00:09:50.33 That's intonation, that's a chord. 00:09:50.33\00:09:52.33 That's what we call an A-flat chord. 00:09:52.33\00:09:54.33 You didn't think I knew that. 00:09:54.33\00:09:55.33 Come on, say Amen. 00:09:55.33\00:09:57.13 [Aud response] PB: Now, Uncle Jimmy, 00:09:57.13\00:09:59.90 hit an E with an E-flat. 00:09:59.90\00:10:03.10 [Organ] Hit a C, hit an A-flat. That's what we call 00:10:03.10\00:10:07.90 dissonance. 00:10:07.90\00:10:10.86 That's out of harmony. 00:10:10.86\00:10:12.46 Now, upper register. 00:10:12.46\00:10:13.56 Give me an E, give me a C, give me a G. 00:10:13.56\00:10:18.56 Hit that chord. 00:10:18.56\00:10:20.90 That's called harmony. 00:10:20.90\00:10:22.00 Everybody say harmony. 00:10:22.00\00:10:24.16 Now give me an E, give me a C, give me an A-flat. 00:10:24.16\00:10:28.50 That's called disharmony. 00:10:28.50\00:10:32.13 God says, I'm looking for, give me an E, give me a C, 00:10:32.13\00:10:37.40 give me a G. 00:10:37.40\00:10:39.06 But what I'm getting is, give me an E, give me a C, give me 00:10:39.06\00:10:44.26 an A-flat. 00:10:44.26\00:10:47.36 And so what's happening is, God says, I'm watching you 00:10:47.36\00:10:50.30 praise me. 00:10:50.30\00:10:52.80 But your issues are coming through. 00:10:52.80\00:10:54.23 And when it looks like you're praising me, all your stuff 00:10:54.23\00:10:57.93 is sounding crazy to me, all your stuff isn't right, it's 00:10:57.93\00:11:02.00 out of harmony, it's dissonance. 00:11:02.00\00:11:04.33 You're all not hearing what I'm saying. 00:11:04.33\00:11:06.33 [Aud response] PB: So let me try it this way. 00:11:06.33\00:11:08.33 Let me go to this side. 00:11:08.33\00:11:09.33 Auntie, come to this piano. 00:11:09.33\00:11:12.50 move quickly. 00:11:12.50\00:11:14.13 Aud: [laughter] PB: All right, 00:11:14.13\00:11:19.63 this is what Satan wanted to do in heaven. 00:11:19.63\00:11:20.83 Let me show you. 00:11:20.83\00:11:21.63 Auntie, play "I'm So Glad Jesus Lifted Me." 00:11:21.63\00:11:24.10 Play it, don't be scared. 00:11:24.10\00:11:28.46 Play it. 00:11:28.46\00:11:30.63 [Piano] Steven, play "Amazing Grace." 00:17:45.96\00:17:48.13 [Aud response] PB: Some people praise God with 00:17:48.13\00:17:50.23 meditation, reflection, some people praise God with tears 00:17:50.23\00:17:55.76 flowing down their cheeks, some people praise God in 00:17:55.76\00:17:59.53 their testimony to others, some people praise God by 00:17:59.53\00:18:03.36 saying Amen, some people praise God by clapping their 00:18:03.36\00:18:07.73 hands, some people praise God by saying, "Praise the Lord." 00:18:07.73\00:18:11.93 Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord. 00:18:11.93\00:18:16.16 So let me tell you this before I take my seat. 00:18:16.16\00:18:19.60 Reflect back on what you've been through. 00:18:19.60\00:18:23.16 When you begin to think about what the devil took you 00:18:23.16\00:18:25.53 through, if the devil had his way, you wouldn't be alive 00:18:25.53\00:18:29.26 today. 00:18:29.26\00:18:30.26 Somebody ought to thank God that they are alive. 00:18:30.26\00:18:37.96 You may be sick, but you're alive. 00:18:37.96\00:18:42.96 You may not have a dollar to your name, but you're alive. 00:18:42.96\00:18:48.23 You may not be in life where you wanted to be in life, but 00:18:48.23\00:18:51.33 you're alive. 00:18:51.33\00:18:52.66 Is anybody just glad to be alive? 00:18:52.66\00:18:56.30 [Aud response] PB: Every time you inhale, every time you 00:18:56.30\00:19:02.13 exhale, every time you breathe, it ought to be a 00:19:02.13\00:19:06.13 testimony to the goodness of God. 00:19:06.13\00:19:08.40 You see what breath means, let everything that hath 00:19:08.40\00:19:10.40 breath, comes from the word ruach. 00:19:10.40\00:19:12.40 Let everything that hath ruach, let everything that 00:19:12.40\00:19:14.40 has breath, praise the Lord. 00:19:14.40\00:19:15.40 Let it praise the Lord. 00:19:15.40\00:19:16.40 Where does this breath come from? 00:19:16.40\00:19:18.40 We know, Genesis 2:7 says, "And the Lord God formed man 00:19:18.40\00:19:20.40 of the dust of the ground, breathed into his nostrils 00:19:20.40\00:19:22.50 the breath of life, man became a living soul." So, 00:19:22.50\00:19:24.93 when God made Adam, when God made Adam's hands and feet, 00:19:24.93\00:19:28.76 Adam still wasn't alive until God breathed in him. 00:19:28.76\00:19:33.26 That's when he became alive. 00:19:33.26\00:19:35.13 Ezekiel 37, what do you see? 00:19:35.13\00:19:37.16 A valley full of dry bones. 00:19:37.16\00:19:39.46 σσ bones. 00:19:39.46\00:19:40.46 Disjointed bones. 00:19:40.46\00:19:41.53 It's not until God breathed on these bones that these 00:19:41.53\00:19:45.23 bones became alive. 00:19:45.23\00:19:46.90 This breath that I have, it does not belong to me. 00:19:46.90\00:19:51.93 The breath that you have, it does not belong to you. 00:19:51.93\00:19:56.26 The fact that I am standing breathing is a gift. 00:19:56.26\00:19:59.90 The fact that you're breathing is a gift. 00:19:59.90\00:20:01.93 Which means what I'm supposed to do with this breath, I'm 00:20:01.93\00:20:05.60 supposed to give glory to God. 00:20:05.60\00:20:08.03 We've got too many folk who don't understand the gift you 00:20:08.03\00:20:10.26 have. 00:20:10.26\00:20:11.26 When somebody is knocked out, when somebody is laid out, 00:20:11.26\00:20:14.66 when somebody is stretched out on the floor and you run 00:20:14.66\00:20:17.56 to see if they're okay, when the paramedics get to them, 00:20:17.56\00:20:20.56 the first thing they do is check to see if the person is 00:20:20.56\00:20:22.73 breathing. 00:20:22.73\00:20:25.16 If you're breathing, you're all right. 00:20:25.16\00:20:27.83 Why is breathing important? 00:20:27.83\00:20:29.23 Your breathing is important because your breathing is an 00:20:29.23\00:20:31.23 indication that whatever you went through didn't kill you. 00:20:31.23\00:20:34.23 [Aud response/applause] PB: Hey, hey! 00:20:36.00\00:20:43.93 That you're still surviving, if you're breathing. 00:20:43.93\00:20:50.56 And I just stopped by to tell somebody that I'm still 00:20:50.56\00:20:54.46 breathing, because the devil couldn't kill me. 00:20:54.46\00:20:59.63 I'm still breathing, because the folk that said I'd never 00:20:59.63\00:21:03.83 be anything need to know I'm still here. 00:21:03.83\00:21:07.60 I'm breathing. 00:21:07.60\00:21:08.26 Because when they said I'd never recover, I did. 00:21:08.26\00:21:14.33 I'm breathing. 00:21:14.33\00:21:15.60 Because God blocked whatever the devil had coming my way. 00:21:15.60\00:21:18.93 And by God didn't let me fall. 00:21:18.93\00:21:23.73 Let me tell you, I didn't come to Oakwood today DOA. 00:21:23.73\00:21:27.13 I said I didn't come to Oakwood DOA, dead on arrival. 00:21:27.13\00:21:36.16 But I come today to praise the Lord. 00:21:36.16\00:21:40.86 [Aud response] PB: For his loving kindness, for his 00:21:40.86\00:21:44.53 tender mercy, for making a way out of no way. 00:21:44.53\00:21:49.96 For allowing me to be here today, for allowing me to get 00:21:49.96\00:21:52.80 an education from this institution. 00:21:52.80\00:21:54.86 I've
