? Jesus is worthy ? ? oh yes, he's worthy ? 00:00:01.30\00:00:15.46 ? worthy of all... ? ? all the praise ? 00:00:15.46\00:00:21.36 Pastor Byrd: Psalm 150. 00:00:21.36\00:00:25.80 A very familiar psalm, a psalm of praise. 00:00:25.80\00:00:28.40 Come on, say Amen. 00:00:28.40\00:00:29.40 Aud: Amen. 00:00:29.40\00:00:30.40 PB: This is an exhortation, praise to God. 00:00:30.40\00:00:35.60 Psalm 150. 00:00:35.60\00:00:37.36 If you have it, let me hear you say Amen. 00:00:37.36\00:00:39.36 Aud: Amen. 00:00:39.36\00:00:40.36 PB: Praise ye the Lord. 00:00:40.36\00:00:42.36 Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament 00:00:42.36\00:00:46.80 of his power. 00:00:46.80\00:00:48.53 Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according 00:00:48.53\00:00:52.93 to his excellent greatness. 00:00:52.93\00:00:55.36 Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him 00:00:55.36\00:00:59.46 with the psaltery and harp. 00:00:59.46\00:01:01.90 Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him 00:01:01.90\00:01:06.23 with stringed instruments and organs. 00:01:06.23\00:01:08.36 Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon 00:01:08.36\00:01:10.53 the high sounding cymbals. 00:01:10.53\00:01:13.26 Let every thing -- oh, I need a witness in this place. 00:01:13.26\00:01:18.76 Let me try that again. 00:01:18.76\00:01:19.76 Let every thing that hath what, everybody? 00:01:19.76\00:01:25.03 Aud: Breath. 00:01:25.03\00:01:26.03 PB: Breath . 00:01:26.03\00:01:27.03 Let every thing that had what, everybody? 00:01:27.03\00:01:29.03 Aud: Breath. 00:01:29.03\00:01:30.03 PB: Praise the Lord. 00:01:30.03\00:01:31.03 Praise ye the Lord. 00:01:31.03\00:01:34.63 God, right now, for the next couple of moments, fill us 00:01:34.63\00:01:37.70 with your spirit and anoint us with your grace. 00:01:37.70\00:01:40.76 God, may your anointing fall in this place. 00:01:40.76\00:01:42.86 Hide me behind your cross, forgive us of our sins, 00:01:42.86\00:01:44.90 we pray. 00:01:44.90\00:01:45.90 And when the appeal is made, may individuals come run 00:01:45.90\00:01:47.90 and say, what must I do to be saved? 00:01:47.90\00:01:50.23 It's in the name of Jesus we pray. 00:01:50.23\00:01:52.26 Let everyone say Amen. 00:01:52.26\00:01:53.26 And Amen. 00:01:53.26\00:01:54.86 Today let's just praise the Lord. 00:01:54.86\00:01:59.60 I said, let's just praise the Lord. 00:01:59.60\00:02:06.23 Do you know that how we respond to God has everything 00:02:06.23\00:02:09.40 to do with our knowledge about how God responds to us? 00:02:09.40\00:02:14.43 I must admit today that I used to wonder, growing up 00:02:14.43\00:02:16.83 in church, I used to wonder why some people praised God 00:02:16.83\00:02:21.03 like they did. 00:02:21.03\00:02:22.73 Why would some people say, Amen. 00:02:22.73\00:02:26.16 Why would some people say, Hallelujah. 00:02:26.16\00:02:29.06 Why some people would clap their hands. 00:02:29.06\00:02:31.63 But as soon as I discovered that I hadn't been through 00:02:31.63\00:02:34.36 anything yet, and I was criticizing folk because 00:02:34.36\00:02:38.50 I didn't understand the things that they were going through, 00:02:38.50\00:02:41.50 I understood then that I had judged them unfairly. 00:02:41.50\00:02:46.23 Because after I had gone through some stuff for myself, 00:02:46.23\00:02:50.03 that after I had been talked about, after I had been 00:02:50.03\00:02:53.63 criticized, after I had been lied on and misused 00:02:53.63\00:02:57.13 and abused and left confused, I better came to understand why 00:02:57.13\00:03:00.70 people praised God like they did, because I found out that 00:03:00.70\00:03:04.46 if God has ever done anything for you, you just can't keep 00:03:04.46\00:03:10.66 it to yourself. 00:03:10.66\00:03:12.36 But you gotta tell somebody. 00:03:12.36\00:03:15.16 Do I have a witness in this place? 00:03:15.16\00:03:17.16 You see, you look at some folk, we come to Oakwood, 00:03:17.16\00:03:19.56 and we look at some folk and we don't know what folk 00:03:19.56\00:03:21.80 have been through. 00:03:21.80\00:03:23.30 Some folk have been bruised, but they're here. 00:03:23.30\00:03:27.16 Some folk have been battered, but they're here. 00:03:27.16\00:03:30.26 Some folk have been laid off, but they're here. 00:03:30.26\00:03:35.06 Some folk have been furloughed , but they're 00:03:35.06\00:03:39.23 here. 00:03:39.23\00:03:40.23 Some folk have been talked about, but they're here. 00:03:40.23\00:03:42.76 Some of you have come out of some messy situations, 00:03:42.76\00:03:45.70 but you're still here. 00:03:45.70\00:03:47.83 And it's difficult to understand and relate 00:03:47.83\00:03:50.50 to somebody who's been the recipient of God's goodness, 00:03:50.50\00:03:53.70 because there are some people who express themselves 00:03:53.70\00:03:57.13 in ways that other folk just don't understand. 00:03:57.13\00:03:59.53 But when God has been there for you, when all else 00:03:59.53\00:04:05.63 has failed you, and you have nothing else to sustain 00:04:05.63\00:04:09.50 you but God, you will learn to praise God like you 00:04:09.50\00:04:15.16 just don't care. 00:04:15.16\00:04:16.26 Aud: Amen. 00:04:16.26\00:04:17.26 PB: You see, when you've seen God pay the rent and you 00:04:17.26\00:04:21.46 don't have any money -- come on, tell the truth today. 00:04:21.46\00:04:23.60 [Aud response] PB: When you've seen 00:04:23.60\00:04:25.60 God literally pay that tuition, when the loan check got lost 00:04:25.60\00:04:30.23 or your passbook got lost, or you didn't have 00:04:30.23\00:04:34.03 tuition money, when you've seen God put food on 00:04:34.03\00:04:36.96 your table when you didn't have money to buy food, 00:04:36.96\00:04:39.96 when you've seen God raise you or a family member off 00:04:39.96\00:04:43.76 your sickbed of affliction, when the doctor said 00:04:43.76\00:04:47.03 there's nothing else they can do, 00:04:47.03\00:04:49.10 when you've seen God literally put cancer 00:04:49.10\00:04:52.23 in remission [Aud response] PB: when you've seen 00:04:52.23\00:04:56.36 God save your life and rescue you, 00:04:56.36\00:05:00.26 when all you grew up with, all the folk you hung out 00:05:00.26\00:05:02.73 with, they are nowhere to be found, and God just saved 00:05:02.73\00:05:07.30 you, and you're wondering why and where all your friends 00:05:07.30\00:05:12.83 are, and you're saying, God, what have I done to be 00:05:12.83\00:05:16.96 the recipient of all this goodness, what have I done, 00:05:16.96\00:05:21.20 when you've been the recipient of God in that way, 00:05:21.20\00:05:24.20 your praise is so real. 00:05:24.20\00:05:26.83 [Aud response] PB: So deep, so heartfelt, that you don't 00:05:26.83\00:05:30.93 care where you are. 00:05:30.93\00:05:32.20 Do I have a witness in this place? 00:05:32.20\00:05:35.13 [Aud response] PB: You don't care what part of the service 00:05:35.13\00:05:37.13 we're at, you don't care who's even looking at you, 00:05:37.13\00:05:41.20 but you have the kind of response to the goodness 00:05:41.20\00:05:43.46 of God that transcends your situation, and you're able, 00:05:43.46\00:05:47.66 even in your car, on the way to church, to have a praise 00:05:47.66\00:05:50.93 service. 00:05:50.93\00:05:51.93 [Aud response] PB: You're the kind of person 00:05:51.93\00:05:53.90 who can stand in Walmart and say God is good, 00:05:53.90\00:05:55.90 and you have a praise service. 00:05:55.90\00:05:57.43 You're the kind of person that can go to Huntsville 00:05:57.43\00:05:59.43 Hospital and say, that's where I'm supposed 00:05:59.43\00:06:01.83 to be today. 00:06:01.83\00:06:02.83 But God has been good to me. 00:06:02.83\00:06:06.00 [Aud response] PB: And because God 00:06:06.00\00:06:08.00 has been good, you can't help but praise 00:06:08.00\00:06:10.56 his name. 00:06:10.56\00:06:11.86 As a matter of fact, to somebody God's been 00:06:11.86\00:06:13.86 so faithful that by now you don't even have to wait until 00:06:13.86\00:06:17.50 you come out of a situation, but you've learned how 00:06:17.50\00:06:20.40 to praise God right in the midst of what you're going through. 00:06:20.40\00:06:23.40 When you can be experiencing something that seeks 00:06:23.40\00:06:26.30 to destroy you, when you can be going through something that 00:06:26.30\00:06:29.63 was designed to take you out, when you come into the house 00:06:29.63\00:06:33.30 of God and you lift up holy hands, and you begin to bless 00:06:33.30\00:06:37.46 God, and you say, God is blessing me, regardless 00:06:37.46\00:06:41.70 of how the devil is stressing me, because you made up 00:06:41.70\00:06:45.46 in your mind that despite your feelings, despite your 00:06:45.46\00:06:49.66 circumstances, you're going to be like David and say, 00:06:49.66\00:06:52.70 I will bless the Lord at all times, and his praise shall 00:06:52.70\00:06:57.23 continually be in my mouth. 00:06:57.23\00:07:00.40 The story is told of a woman who went to her church one 00:07:00.40\00:07:03.30 day to meet her pastor. 00:07:03.30\00:07:05.30 She went to the pastor's study, and she said, Pastor, 00:07:05.30\00:07:09.26 I'm going through problems with my family. 00:07:09.26\00:07:13.00 The Pastor said, Hallelujah. 00:07:13.00\00:07:18.63 The woman looked at her pastor and said, Well, Pastor, 00:07:18.63\00:07:21.73 two more things. 00:07:21.73\00:07:23.76 I'm going through problems on my job. 00:07:23.76\00:07:27.03 The pastor said, Thank you, Jesus. 00:07:27.03\00:07:30.43 She then stood up and she said, Pastor, there's 00:07:30.43\00:07:34.26 one more thing. 00:07:34.26\00:07:35.76 I'm going through health problems. 00:07:35.76\00:07:40.06 The pastor looked at the woman and said, Well, praise the Lord. 00:07:40.06\00:07:43.30 The woman then said, Now, hold up, Pastor. 00:07:43.30\00:07:47.33 Wait a minute. 00:07:47.33\00:07:48.33 I come in here and you're mocking me now. 00:07:48.33\00:07:50.43 I came here and told you I was going through problems 00:07:50.43\00:07:53.23 with my family. 00:07:53.23\00:07:54.23 I told you I was going through problems on my job, 00:07:54.23\00:07:56.46 I told you I was going through health problems, and I've come 00:07:56.46\00:07:59.73 up in here, and here you tell me that you're going to make 00:07:59.73\00:08:02.63 mockery of my problems, you're going to sit up here 00:08:02.63\00:08:05.26 and shout hallelujah, thank you, Jesus, and praise 00:08:05.26\00:08:08.83 the Lord, when I'm talking about I'm going through 00:08:08.83\00:08:13.60 all of this. 00:08:13.60\00:08:14.86 The pastor said to the woman, Sister, the reason why I'm 00:08:14.86\00:08:19.63 praising God for you is because you said you were 00:08:19.63\00:08:24.80 going through. 00:08:24.80\00:08:25.80 You didn't say you were in it to stay. 00:08:25.80\00:08:30.06 You said you were going through it. 00:08:30.06\00:08:33.53 [Aud response] PB: And some of us need 00:08:33.53\00:08:36.13 to learn that right now. 00:08:36.13\00:08:37.33 You need to learn that you're just going through some stuff. 00:08:37.33\00:08:41.96 You're not in it to stay, you're just going through it, 00:08:41.96\00:08:45.73 trying to get to it, and God wouldn't take you to it if God 00:08:45.73\00:08:49.80 couldn't bring you through it. 00:08:49.80\00:08:51.80 That's why I praise him like I do, because I've learned my 00:08:51.80\00:08:55.93 setback is just a setup for a comeback, and I love 00:08:55.93\00:09:00.60 to praise him. 00:09:00.60\00:09:01.60 Aud: [applause] PB: Isaiah 66, the Word 00:09:01.60\00:09:04.53 says, "For as the new heavens and the new earth 00:09:04.53\00:09:07.86 which I will make shall remain before me, saith the Lord, 00:09:07.86\00:09:10.33 so shall your seed and your name remain. 00:09:10.33\00:09:13.26 It shall come to pass," the Word of God says, 00:09:13.26\00:09:15.63 "that from one new moon from another, from one Sabbath 00:09:15.63\00:09:18.26 to another, shall all flesh," how much of flesh, 00:09:18.26\00:09:20.90 everybody? 00:09:20.90\00:09:21.90 Aud: All. 00:09:21.90\00:09:22.90 PB: "All flesh come to worship before me, saith the Lord." 00:09:22.90\00:09:25.90 So that means if you don't like to worship God 00:09:25.90\00:09:28.43 here, how are you going to make it over there, when 00:09:28.43\00:09:35.10 we get to God's great heaven? 00:09:35.10\00:09:37.50 Because when we get to heaven, we're going 00:09:37.50\00:09:40.66 to worship him, we're going to worship him. 00:09:40.66\00:09:45.86 I said, we're going to worship him. 00:09:45.86\00:09:48.03 Do I have a witness in this place? 00:09:48.03\00:09:50.03 [Aud response] PB: Now, let me get into 00:09:50.03\00:09:52.03 the text quickly. 00:09:52.03\00:09:53.03 Psalm 150 is very interesting. 00:09:53.03\00:09:54.03 It's the final of the hallelujah psalms. 00:09:54.03\00:09:57.03 It is the great closing hallelujah or doxology 00:09:57.03\00:09:59.03 of the Psalmist. 00:09:59.03\00:10:00.03 The book of Psalms concludes with a call for everything 00:10:00.03\00:10:02.76 that has breath to join in this great anthem of praise. 00:10:02.76\00:10:06.43 Psalm 150 is broken up into three parts. 00:10:06.43\00:10:10.56 First of all, it helps us understand what God should be 00:10:10.56\00:10:13.93 praised for. 00:10:13.93\00:10:15.36 Secondly, it helps us understand how God should 00:10:15.36\00:10:18.53 be praised, and then number three, it helps us understand 00:10:18.53\00:10:22.10 who must praise God. 00:10:22.10\00:10:24.43 The Psalms, or these songs, are out of Israel's history, 00:10:24.43\00:10:28.53 and they culminate with praise. 00:10:28.53\00:10:31.26 Praise is a powerful thing. 00:10:31.26\00:10:34.06 When people who have been the recipients of the blessings 00:10:34.06\00:10:36.43 of God understand how to praise God, look out, 'cause 00:10:36.43\00:10:40.76 hallelujah, somebody, all the way through Psalm 146 00:10:40.76\00:10:45.60 to Psalm 149, they are the same thing. 00:10:45.60\00:10:49.73 Praise ye the Lord. 00:10:49.73\00:10:51.93 Psalm 147, praise ye the Lord. 00:10:51.93\00:10:55.90 Psalm 148, praise ye the Lord. 00:10:55.90\00:10:59.90 Psalm 149, praise ye the Lord. 00:10:59.90\00:11:03.06 And then look at the culmination. 00:11:03.06\00:11:05.20 Psalm 150 declares, praise ye the Lord. 00:11:05.20\00:11:09.56 Now, I want you to understand, lesson number one 00:11:09.56\00:11:14.86 for us today, you have to have the right attitude 00:11:14.86\00:11:19.76 if you're going to praise God. 00:11:19.76\00:11:21.76 [Aud response] PB: Let me say that again. 00:11:21.76\00:11:24.23 If you're going to praise God, you've got to have 00:11:24.23\00:11:27.23 the right attitude. 00:11:27.23\00:11:28.20 Everybody say right attitude. 00:11:28.20\00:11:29.20 Aud: Right attitude. 00:11:29.20\00:11:30.13 PB: You have to understand why your attitude is important, 00:11:30.13\00:11:32.26 because if your attitude isn't right, you're rejecting 00:11:32.26\00:11:35.36 the admonition to praise God. 00:11:35.36\00:11:36.73 If your attitude isn't right when you come to worship God, 00:11:36.73\00:11:41.43 you'll find yourself in worship criticizing the preacher, 00:11:41.43\00:11:45.70 talking about the choir, finding fault 00:11:45.70\00:11:49.03 with the musicians, complaining about the elders, 00:11:49.03\00:11:52.43 sitting miserably in church, and you'll miss out on 00:11:52.43\00:11:55.66 the blessings God has for your life. 00:11:55.66\00:11:58.76 Thirteen times in this six verses we heard, praise 00:11:58.76\00:12:04.03 the Lord. 00:12:04.03\00:12:05.60 And because repetition deepens the impression, 00:12:05.60\00:12:08.20 the admonition to praise the Lord is not up 00:12:08.20\00:12:11.56 for negotiation. 00:12:11.56\00:12:13.16 It's not up for debate. 00:12:13.16\00:12:14.90 It's not a suggestion, but it's a command. 00:12:14.90\00:12:17.73 Everybody say command. 00:12:17.73\00:12:18.76 Aud: Command. 00:12:18.76\00:12:19.76 PB: Which means it doesn't make a difference 00:12:19.76\00:12:21.76 how you feel about it. 00:12:21.76\00:12:23.40 You see, too many of us, I don't feel like it. 00:12:23.40\00:12:26.73 I'm so glad Jesus didn't say that when he went to Calvary. 00:12:26.73\00:12:29.73 Aud: Amen. 00:12:29.73\00:12:30.66 PB: I don't feel like it. 00:12:30.66\00:12:32.70 God says, I need you to praise me, because God 00:12:32.70\00:12:37.66 inhabits the praises of his people. 00:12:37.66\00:12:40.40 Look at verse 1, the Word of God says, "Praise ye 00:12:40.40\00:12:42.83 the" what, everybody? 00:12:42.83\00:12:44.23 Come on, praise ye the what, everybody? 00:12:44.23\00:12:46.23 [Aud response] PB: Praise God in his sanctuary, 00:12:46.23\00:12:49.23 praise him in the firmament of his what, everybody? 00:12:49.23\00:12:51.23 House. 00:12:51.23\00:12:52.23 Now, the Clear Word Bible says, to paraphrase, 00:12:52.23\00:12:54.23 "Praise the Lord. 00:12:54.23\00:12:55.40 Praise God in his heavenly sanctuary. 00:12:55.40\00:12:58.16 Praise him, all you who live throughout the universe." 00:12:58.16\00:13:02.90 Which means that the command to praise God extends 00:13:02.90\00:13:06.83 to all the inhabitants of both heaven and earth. 00:13:06.83\00:13:10.00 Everywhere. 00:13:10.00\00:13:11.00 Everybody is to praise God. 00:13:11.00\00:13:14.90 On the mountaintop, praise God. 00:13:14.90\00:13:17.73 In the valley low, praise God. 00:13:17.73\00:13:22.43 Everybody is to praise God. 00:13:22.43\00:13:24.23 It doesn't matter what's happening in your life, 00:13:24.23\00:13:27.30 praise God. 00:13:27.30\00:13:28.66 It doesn't make a difference where you are in your life, 00:13:28.66\00:13:31.16 praise God. 00:13:31.16\00:13:32.93 Verse number 2 says, "Praise him for his 00:13:32.93\00:13:34.93 mighty acts." Let me 00:13:39.93\00:13:42.90 stop there. 00:13:42.90\00:13:43.90 Let me tell you something. 00:13:43.90\00:13:44.90 In life all you have to do is remember. 00:13:44.90\00:13:47.43 All you have to do is remember his acts 00:13:47.43\00:13:51.40 or his actions. 00:13:51.40\00:13:53.46 Actions deal with what God has already done. 00:13:53.46\00:13:56.93 How has God acted in your life? 00:13:56.93\00:14:02.33 It's important to understand this, because when you look 00:14:02.33\00:14:05.03 back over your life at all the things God has done 00:14:05.03\00:14:07.03 for you, all the things God has brought you out of, all 00:14:07.03\00:14:09.06 the times God has healed your body, all the times, somebody 00:14:09.06\00:14:13.50 knows, that God has made a way out of no way, you have 00:14:13.50\00:14:17.33 to be convinced that God is worthy to be praised. 00:14:17.33\00:14:23.30 Now, according to means as a result of. 00:14:23.30\00:14:30.30 Or, as God has demonstrated in your life. 00:14:30.30\00:14:33.26 Which then means the intensity of that act 00:14:33.26\00:14:37.60 represents the intensity of your praise. 00:14:37.60\00:14:40.63 If God has never done anything for you, 00:14:40.63\00:14:49.06 then I understand why you are like you are. 00:14:49.06\00:14:53.93 But I believe that I've got some witnesses in this place 00:14:53.93\00:14:57.26 [Aud response] PB: that can go back 00:14:57.26\00:14:59.43 in the recesses of their minds and remember what God 00:14:59.43\00:15:04.50 has done for them. 00:15:04.50\00:15:05.66 [Aud response] PB: When I look back over 00:15:05.66\00:15:08.13 my life, and I think things over, all of my good days 00:15:08.13\00:15:15.00 outweigh my bad days, I won't complain. 00:15:15.00\00:15:20.80 When the devil starts telling you in your ear, it's not 00:15:20.80\00:15:24.26 going to work out, you ought to give up, that's when 00:15:24.26\00:15:27.23 the Holy Ghost says, wait a minute. 00:15:27.23\00:15:30.00 All you need to do is just remember that if God was able 00:15:30.00\00:15:34.70 -- everybody say able Aud: Able. 00:15:34.70\00:15:36.70 PB: If God was able five years ago, then God is able right now. 00:15:36.70\00:15:43.30 If God were able ten years ago, then God is able right now. 00:15:43.30\00:15:49.80 Do I have a witness in this place? 00:15:49.80\00:15:51.80 [Aud response] PB: And so I used to wonder, 00:15:51.80\00:15:53.80 as I said, why people would praise God like they did. 00:15:53.80\00:15:55.93 But not only did I wonder why they would praise God like 00:15:55.93\00:15:58.13 they did, but I would wonder why they wouldn't stop. 00:15:58.13\00:16:01.70 When the song got good, when the sermon got good, 00:16:03.93\00:16:09.13 why was it necessary for reprise? 00:16:09.13\00:16:12.93 Why did the instruments have to strike it up again? 00:16:12.93\00:16:16.70 Why did the preacher have to keep on preaching? 00:16:16.70\00:16:19.70 Why didn't he stop? 00:16:19.70\00:16:21.53 I know how you all talk about me in the appeal -- come on, 00:16:21.53\00:16:24.30 say Amen. 00:16:24.30\00:16:25.30 Aud: [laughter] PB: Why won't he stop? 00:16:25.30\00:16:28.30 The music stopped, the sermon stopped, but some people kept 00:16:30.53\00:16:35.63 on praising God. 00:16:35.63\00:16:37.50 And we were like, come on, now, let's move it on. 00:16:37.50\00:16:41.20 Settle down. 00:16:41.20\00:16:42.20 It's over, move it on. 00:16:42.20\00:16:44.23 But when I look at this verse and I understand verse 2, 00:16:44.23\00:16:51.46 it makes sense why they kept going on. 00:16:51.46\00:16:54.13 It says, praise him according to his excellence, greatness. 00:16:54.13\00:16:58.56 I realized then that some people kept praising God 00:16:58.56\00:17:02.80 because it's according to his excellent greatness 00:17:02.80\00:17:06.76 toward them. 00:17:06.76\00:17:07.76 Morning by morning, new mercies I see. 00:17:07.76\00:17:12.20 You see, if you understood what they've been through, 00:17:12.20\00:17:15.06 and the mess that God had to snatch some of us up out of, 00:17:15.06\00:17:19.80 you would understand that the devil tried to keep some of 00:17:19.80\00:17:23.00 us in it. 00:17:23.00\00:17:24.00 But if you understood the extremity of their mess, 00:17:24.00\00:17:26.80 you'd understand the extremity of their praise. 00:17:26.80\00:17:29.86 You're all not hearing me. I'm going to preach 00:17:29.86\00:17:34.56 this somewhere else. 00:17:34.56\00:17:35.56 You all don't hear me. 00:17:35.56\00:17:38.03 But somebody knows, when I look back over my life, 00:17:38.03\00:17:44.43 my praise can't be programmed. 00:17:44.43\00:17:47.96 This praise can't be dictated by a clock. 00:17:47.96\00:17:53.00 This praise can't be controlled. 00:17:53.00\00:17:56.96 This praise makes me praise God in strange places 00:17:56.96\00:18:01.90 at strange times. 00:18:01.90\00:18:04.53 Let me help you quickly understand the cultural 00:18:04.53\00:18:06.96 implications of Israel's worship. 00:18:06.96\00:18:09.86 Israel's worship was rooted in music. 00:18:09.86\00:18:13.50 Its worship was rooted in instrumentation. 00:18:13.50\00:18:15.96 Because, remember, these psalms are songs. 00:18:15.96\00:18:19.10 These are 150 songs sung in worship. 00:18:19.10\00:18:22.70 And when these things are sung in worship, I must 00:18:22.70\00:18:24.90 understand, then, they had significance, that they were 00:18:24.90\00:18:27.86 tied to music. 00:18:27.86\00:18:29.30 Now, I must understand, friends of mine, where 00:18:29.30\00:18:31.63 the origin of all of this came from. 00:18:31.63\00:18:34.76 Because in heaven, before the creation of this earth, 00:18:34.76\00:18:37.60 remember, guess who's over the music ministry? 00:18:37.60\00:18:41.66 Lucifer. 00:18:43.20\00:18:44.20 Satan. 00:18:44.20\00:18:46.73 The Bible says that Lucifer was full of music, 00:18:46.73\00:18:51.40 and he directed the heavenly courts. Lucifer could sing 00:18:51.40\00:18:55.16 all the parts. 00:18:55.16\00:18:56.26 Soprano, alto, tenor and bass, all at the same time. 00:18:56.26\00:19:01.20 Lucifer could play all the instruments. 00:19:01.20\00:19:03.76 But the Bible says in Isaiah 14 that something 00:19:03.76\00:19:07.13 rose up in him, that pride rose up in him. 00:19:07.13\00:19:11.33 Pride goeth before destruction, a haughty spirit before 00:19:11.33\00:19:13.80 a fall. 00:19:13.80\00:19:14.80 Pride rose up in him, he got tired of the music, 00:19:14.80\00:19:17.70 he got tired of giving glory to God, 00:19:17.70\00:19:20.10 he convinced a third of the angels to fall 00:19:20.10\00:19:22.10 from heaven with him, and therefore he became 00:19:22.10\00:19:24.10 a fallen angel. 00:19:24.10\00:19:26.06 Lucifer was cast to Earth, now he walks the Earth. 00:19:26.06\00:19:29.00 Now watch what happens. 00:19:29.00\00:19:31.06 Guess what fell with him. 00:19:31.06\00:19:33.13 He took music. 00:19:35.70\00:19:36.80 Why? 00:19:36.80\00:19:39.46 Because music -- listen to me good -- has the greatest 00:19:39.46\00:19:42.73 influence on a generation. 00:19:42.73\00:19:46.13 What is it all these young folk listen to all day? 00:19:46.13\00:19:49.70 What's on all these iPads, iPods and iPhones? 00:19:49.70\00:19:55.43 Why do they dress like they dress and talk like they 00:19:55.43\00:19:59.56 talk? 00:19:59.56\00:20:01.56 Music. 00:20:02.80\00:20:03.80 Music is powerful and it's an influence. 00:20:03.80\00:20:07.20 And music in the wrong hands is a terrible influence. 00:20:07.20\00:20:13.96 Understand, friends of mine, there's nothing wrong 00:20:13.96\00:20:18.13 with that keyboard. 00:20:18.13\00:20:20.13 But the keyboard in the wrong hands is a terrible influence. 00:20:21.83\00:20:26.83 I'm going to preach it anyway. 00:20:26.83\00:20:28.83 There's nothing wrong with that Hammond organ. 00:20:28.83\00:20:31.90 But the Hammond organ in the wrong hands is a terrible 00:20:31.90\00:20:37.33 influence. 00:20:37.33\00:20:38.43 There is nothing wrong with those drums. 00:20:38.43\00:20:43.26 But drums in the wrong hands are a terrible influence. 00:20:43.26\00:20:48.13 News flash. 00:20:48.13\00:20:49.83 There is no such thing as a Christian instrument. 00:20:49.83\00:20:53.26 Aud: [applause] PB: There is no church piano 00:20:53.26\00:21:02.90 or a worldly piano. 00:21:02.90\00:21:05.03 All these pianos in the education department, 00:21:05.03\00:21:08.66 also in the church, came from the same place. 00:21:08.66\00:21:12.16 A. 00:22:03.93\00:22:06.60 Is the drummer dedicated? 00:22:06.60\00:22:09.46 Does the organist love Jesus? 00:22:09.46\00:22:12.93 But an instrument in the wrong hands 00:22:12.93\00:22:16.00 is a terrible influence. 00:22:16.00\00:22:18.20 [Aud response] PB: I've opened this door, 00:22:18.20\00:22:20.20 so let me go on and walk in it. 00:22:20.20\00:22:22.20 Let me give you some Adventist history. 00:22:22.20\00:22:24.20 I had to study for this. 00:22:24.20\00:22:26.13 We talk about what's appropriate and what's 00:22:26.13\00:22:28.13 inappropriate. 00:22:28.13\00:22:29.13 Noted Adventist historian Ronald Graybill, in his article 00:22:29.13\00:22:32.96 "Enthusiasm in Early Adventist Worship," written 00:22:32.96\00:22:35.53 in "Ministry Magazine," by the way -- 00:22:35.53\00:22:37.13 that's the magazine from the G.C. to the preachers, 00:22:37.13\00:22:39.50 says that our spiritual ancestors had livelier services 00:22:39.50\00:22:42.80 than many of us would be comfortable with 00:22:42.80\00:22:44.80 today. 00:22:44.80\00:22:46.43 That's what he says. 00:22:46.43\00:22:47.90 He says that if those who view the Adventist pioneers 00:22:47.90\00:22:50.66 as cold, stoic and stiff liturgists could turn back 00:22:50.66\00:22:54.36 the clock and visit a 19th-century Adventist 00:22:54.36\00:22:56.73 worship service, they would be shocked at what 00:22:56.73\00:22:58.93 they would hear. 00:22:58.93\00:23:01.20 Now, he says, while the use of musical instruments 00:23:01.20\00:23:04.00 was not a major factor, and you need to know why it wasn't 00:23:04.00\00:23:07.10 a major factor -- let me explain. 00:23:07.10\00:23:09.10 It wasn't a major factor, he says, because many 00:23:09.10\00:23:11.06 of the early Adventist groups met in homes where no musical 00:23:11.06\00:23:14.53 instruments were present because they couldn't afford 00:23:14.53\00:23:16.66 to buy musical instruments, or they lacked the 00:23:16.66\00:23:18.90 skill to play them. 00:23:18.90\00:23:21.73 In fact, in the early Methodist church, 00:23:21.73\00:23:24.46 the Methodist congregation that Ellen White once belonged 00:23:24.46\00:23:27.46 to was one of the first to buy and install an organ 00:23:27.46\00:23:30.83 in their church. 00:23:30.83\00:23:32.96 And she was criticized for doing it. 00:23:32.96\00:23:36.10 Why? 00:23:36.10\00:23:37.10 Not because it was spiritually wrong, 00:23:37.10\00:23:39.10 but because nobody had ever done it before. 00:23:39.10\00:23:42.10 Ronald Graybill continues, he says, the music of that era 00:23:43.60\00:23:46.80 was rhythmic, enthusiastic, repetitious, and possessed 00:23:46.80\00:23:51.06 broad appeal. 00:23:51.06\00:23:52.06 He says the singing was pervasive, provided 00:23:52.06\00:23:54.06 a powerful emotional stimulant, and served the same pragmatic 00:23:54.06\00:23:56.83 function as the music of the frontier revival 00:23:56.83\00:23:59.10 tradition. 00:23:59.10\00:24:00.16 Adventist pioneer Jeannie Ayars Kellogg, in her article 00:24:00.16\00:24:02.80 "Growing Up With the Third Angel's Message," as recorded 00:24:02.80\00:24:05.80 in the "Adventist Review," said that almost all 00:24:05.80\00:24:07.80 of the early Adventist meetings she attended began 00:24:07.80\00:24:10.16 with singing. 00:24:10.16\00:24:12.10 Singing. 00:24:12.10\00:24:13.46 She said they were full of hearty singing throughout. 00:24:13.46\00:24:16.66 They ended, she said, with hand-shaking, they ended with 00:24:16.66\00:24:20.26 hugging, and they ended with hearty singing. 00:24:20.26\00:24:22.80 According to her, most of the catchy tunes of the early 00:24:22.80\00:24:26.56 Adventist church reflected the ardent hope of the soon 00:24:26.56\00:24:29.56 return of Jesus Christ. 00:24:29.56\00:24:31.10 Since the imminent return of Jesus was the core belief 00:24:31.10\00:24:34.73 that united early Adventists, early Adventists opted 00:24:34.73\00:24:38.43 to discard the primary use of European hymns for music 00:24:38.43\00:24:41.90 that more accurately reflected the contemporary hopes, 00:24:41.90\00:24:45.93 aspirations, dreams and disappointments 00:24:45.93\00:24:49.33 of the church. 00:24:49.33\00:24:50.46 They chose to employ musical styles that were solidly 00:24:50.46\00:24:53.16 grounded in Jesus Christ but were more in touch 00:24:53.16\00:24:57.30 with current popular forms. 00:24:57.30\00:24:59.56 Early Adventists sang gospel tunes to well-known secular 00:24:59.56\00:25:03.50 notes. 00:25:03.50\00:25:05.03 You don't believe me? 00:25:05.03\00:25:06.96 Our Seventh-day Adventist hymnals. 00:25:06.96\00:25:09.16 Today's popular songs such as "What Child is This?" "How 00:25:09.16\00:25:13.20 Sweet Are the Tidings." 00:25:13.20\00:25:15.33 Both of these songs borrow their direct melodies from popular 00:25:15.33\00:25:18.83 secular tunes. 00:25:18.83\00:25:20.33 Which means it can't, that it's the music 00:25:20.33\00:25:24.10 that's Christian. 00:25:24.10\00:25:25.16 We always talk about what's Christian and what's not. 00:25:25.16\00:25:27.36 We've got to listen to the words. 00:25:27.36\00:25:29.36 Early Adventists were also vocal worshipers. 00:25:29.36\00:25:31.53 Ellen White, in a letter written in 1876, after 00:25:31.53\00:25:33.80 attending Adventist camp meetings from Kansas 00:25:33.80\00:25:35.80 to Minnesota, declared, "I saw singing to the glory of God 00:25:35.80\00:25:38.80 often drove away the enemy." 00:25:38.80\00:25:40.80 Drove away the enemy, she said, and shouting 00:25:43.53\00:25:47.33 would beat him back. 00:25:47.33\00:25:49.96 >: The Breath of Life gift offer this week is 00:25:49.96\00:25:52.03 "Surprised By Love" by pastor and international 00:25:52.03\00:25:54.26 speaker Elizabeth Vierra Talbot. 00:25:54.26\00:25:56.66 Find out how people in the Bible were surprised 00:25:56.66\00:25:58.63 by God's love. 00:25:58.63\00:25:59.73 Adam and Eve were surprised. 00:25:59.73\00:26:01.10 The deceitful serpent and the Pharisees 00:26:01.10\00:26:03.30 were surprised. 00:26:03.30\00:26:04.30 It surprised the disciples and even the heavenly angels. 00:26:04.30\00:26:06.86 And God's surprises of love continue all around us today. 00:26:06.86\00:26:11.10 Journey with Elizabeth as you get a fresh view 00:26:11.10\00:26:13.30 of the greatest story ever told, from the kidnapping of God's 00:26:13.30\00:26:18.23 children to the rescuers, from the ransom 00:26:18.23\00:26:20.76 to the reunion. 00:26:20.76\00:26:21.76 "Surprised By Love" is yours for a gift of $5.00 or more. 00:26:21.76\00:26:24.76 Just call our toll-free number, 877-BOL-OFFER. 00:26:24.76\00:26:26.76 That's 877-265-6333. 00:26:26.76\00:26:31.36 Please have your credit card ready when you call. 00:26:31.36\00:26:33.53 Or you may write to us to request your copy. 00:26:33.53\00:26:35.53 Just send your check to Breath of Life, P.O. 00:26:35.53\00:26:37.56 Box 340, Newbury Park, California 91319. 00:26:37.56\00:26:41.86 Get your copy of "Surprised By Love" today. 00:26:41.86\00:26:44.80 Be encouraged and touched by the unexpected rescue of 00:26:44.80\00:26:47.90 God's children. 00:26:47.90\00:26:51.03 >: Are you on Facebook? 00:26:51.03\00:26:52.73 Carlton Byrd invites you to join his Facebook page. 00:26:52.73\00:26:55.33 Just go to Breath of Life TV on Facebook and click "like." 00:26:55.33\00:26:59.36 There you'll find inspirational posts and short 00:26:59.36\00:27:01.76 devotionals from Carlton to help you through your day. 00:27:01.76\00:27:04.96 You will also be able to get the latest updates 00:27:04.96\00:27:08.60 on Carlton's preaching schedule and see what's new 00:27:08.60\00:27:12.00 with Breath of Life television. 00:27:12.00\00:27:13.33 Stay in touch, stay blessed. 00:27:13.33\00:27:15.13 Go to Breath of Life TV on Facebook and click "like" 00:27:15.13\00:27:19.30 today. 00:27:19.30\00:27:20.30 PB: Thank you very much for tuning in and watching 00:27:20.30\00:27:23.10 Breath of Life today. 00:27:23.10\00:27:24.83 We do hope that you were blessed by our ministry 00:27:24.83\00:27:27.36 and that we gave a healing word in a hurting world. 00:27:27.36\00:27:32.00 In order for Breath of Life to continue ministry, 00:27:32.00\00:27:34.43 we need you. 00:27:34.43\00:27:35.63 We need your prayers, we need your support. 00:27:35.63\00:27:38.30 We want you to know that any and all donations, small 00:27:38.30\00:27:41.40 or great, they are sincerely welcomed and appreciated. 00:27:41.40\00:27:45.46 To contact us or to make your donation, please feel free 00:27:45.46\00:27:48.63 to give us a call at 877-BOL-OFFER. 00:27:48.63\00:27:53.13 That's 877-BOL-OFFER. 00:27:53.13\00:27:59.93 Or you may write to us at Breath of Life, P.O.
