01:16 Because Nineveh was the place that they sent preachers 01:20 to punish them. 01:21 Nineveh was the place where preachers went to die. 01:28 Nineveh was the district that nobody wanted to go to. 01:34 Because most preachers want to go to places where the ground is 01:38 fertile, where there are many people to convert, where there 01:43 are praise teams and choirs and money. 01:47 That's where they want to go. 01:49 But they don't realize that the blessings of God are on people 01:52 and not places. 01:54 Which means that God then can send you to the toughest place 01:58 to preach his Word, and God can still bless you. 02:02 Do I have a witness in this place? 02:04 God says to Jonah, go to Nineveh, preach the Word. 02:08 Now, remember, this is the same God who told brother Ezekiel to 02:14 preach to some dry dead bones. 02:17 Now, I must admit, it's very hard to preach to those who 02:21 move, and those who will stir around a little bit. 02:26 But to preach to that which is dead and dry can be an awful 02:31 thing. 02:33 My travels have taken me to some dry, dead audiences. 02:37 Because, you see, I've learned, it's tough to preach to 02:41 Christians who are like wheel barrels--no good unless pushed. 02:46 It's tough to preach, better yet, to canoes, that they want 02:51 the people to be paddled. 02:53 Or kittens; they are more content when petted. 02:56 Or some are like footballs; you can't tell which way they're 02:59 going to bounce next. 03:01 Some are like balloons; full of wind and ready to blow up. 03:03 Some audiences are like lights; they keep going on and off. 03:09 But God says, preach the Word. 03:13 God sent Jonah to the most despicable, most cruel, most 03:20 evil, most idolatrous city in the world. 03:24 The historical record says that the Ninevites would cut 03:27 the heads off enemy soldiers and stack them up 03:31 outside of the city. 03:32 The record says they would then mutilate the bodies and stack 03:36 them in huge piles. 03:38 They would then skin their enemies and hang the skin on the 03:42 city walls. 03:43 They would torture their prisoners of war by cutting off 03:46 hands, yanking out organs, and gutting them. 03:50 They would even burn women and infants alive. 03:52 And to this vile city God would send Jonah. 03:59 Now, God could have sent anyone else, for when it's a tough area 04:05 you would think God would send somebody with extraordinary 04:08 gifts and talents, because that's what man does. 04:11 That's what the conference office does. 04:14 Send the best preacher. 04:17 Send the best teacher. 04:19 Send the best singer. 04:21 Send the best administrator. 04:23 Send the best fund-raiser. 04:25 Send the best evangelist, send the best pastor. 04:28 Go turn that thing around. 04:31 But God is sovereign, which means God is God 04:37 all by himself, and God can send who he wants to send. 04:40 God wants in this instance to send Jonah and sometimes I've 04:44 learned that God sends people to certain churches, not so much 04:49 because he's trying to save the people, but he's trying to save 04:53 the preacher. 04:54 God says, go to Nineveh, go to that city 04:58 and preach the Word. 05:02 That's what he told Brother Jonah. 05:04 Go and preach the Word. 05:07 Sometimes in life's journey God sends us and leads us one step 05:10 at a time without telling us about the next steps. 05:13 And he doesn't tell us what's going to happen until we get to 05:15 our destination, because if he told you right now, you might 05:19 abandon the journey, because you don't want to go through any 05:22 pain. 05:23 But somebody knows that when you're on God's path, God will 05:27 protect you, because God never sends you anywhere where God's 05:31 not God enough to keep you. 05:33 When God sends a preacher to a city, God doesn't tell the 05:38 preacher exactly what's going to happen in the city. 05:42 God just tells the preacher what to say in the city. 05:47 That's why you've gotta have faith, my friends. 05:49 You gotta believe what you cannot see. 05:52 Without faith it is impossible to please God. 05:55 God told Jonah what to say in Nineveh, but Jonah rejects the 05:59 call. 06:01 Jonah runs to Tarshish. 06:02 Jonah runs from responsibility. 06:06 Jonah runs from what God has called him to do. 06:08 Look at Jonah, chapter 1, and look at verse number 3. 06:12 The Word of God says in Jonah 1:3, "But Jonah 06:14 rose up to flee unto Tarshish." 06:17 He rose up to flee from where, everybody? 10:46 They're talking about you. 10:47 If outsiders know all of your business, then you need to check 10:52 your insiders. 10:55 But not only that. 10:56 Be careful of your relationships. 11:00 Some of you are on a ship that's broken. 11:03 Don't fall in love with somebody so much that you let them have 11:07 your space in time with God. 11:10 Some folk are mad today, upset today and feel their lives are 11:13 messed up forever because you let people in place of God. 11:17 And when people let you down -- and they will -- you're 11:22 frustrated because they didn't come through for you. 11:25 But friends of mine, as long as you know that people are people, 11:29 people are going to do people things, and people are going to 11:33 fail you. 11:34 But whK] you keep people in their proper place, you will 11:36 learn to love them without worshiping them. 11:39 Jonah faces a storm. 11:43 Jonah's life is in danger. 11:47 But the Word of God says, as we move now to Jonah, chapter 2, 11:50 verse 1, that Jonah prayed. 11:52 Jonah did what, everybody? 13:19 Jonah 1:7 says, "Now the Lord had prepared a great fish 13:22 to swallow up Jonah." 13:23 Which means God personally put Jonah in this situation 13:27 in order that Jonah might come to know who God was 13:30 for himself. 13:31 And that's what God will do. 13:33 That's another lesson for us today. 13:35 God will put you in a particular place. 13:38 God will put you in a peculiar, strange and even uncomfortable 13:40 place, in order that you might come to know who you're dealing 13:43 with. 13:44 God will purposely let you hit rock bottom. 13:48 Let me say that one more time. 13:49 God will purposely let you hit rock bottom. 13:56 Quit blaming the man. 13:59 Quit blaming your background. 14:01 Quit blaming how you grew up. 14:03 Quit blaming somebody else. 14:05 You've got in your situation, and when God has dealt with you, 14:09 you'll start taking responsibility for your 14:11 situation and you need to thank God 14:13 -- listen to me good -- you in this life have to 14:15 learn how to thank God for the time when you're 14:18 in the belly of a fish. 14:21 You need to thank God for the time when you 14:22 hit rock bottom. 14:24 You have to learn how to thank God. 14:27 Because how would you ever come to know God like you know him 14:29 had you not hit rock bottom? 18:26 I love these students. 18:27 You know, I look at them today, I see, they don't realize, I'm 18:29 old. 18:31 I was at AY last night, church packed full of young people, I 18:33 said, praise God. 18:34 They don't realize, 24 years ago we used to be in Mirren Hall 18:37 with no air-conditioning. 18:40 Packed. 18:42 Still no air-conditioning. 18:43 Aud: (laughs) PB: Packed, but we were just 18:47 as fine, we were having ourselves a good ol' time, 18:50 singing God is, and I shall wear a crown, 18:53 but I'm so glad that it's 24 years later. 18:57 Come on, say Amen. 18:58 God heard my cry, and he opened up the windows of heaven, poured 19:04 us out a blessing, and now there's not room enough 19:07 to receive it. 19:08 And when you really understand prayer, it doesn't make a 19:10 difference what situation you find yourself in. 19:12 Because when you really, sincerely pray to God, your 19:15 prayer will reach God. 19:16 And let me throw this in quickly. 19:19 Prayer cannot change things if prayer doesn't change you. 19:25 Aud: (applause) PB: Because of prayer changes things, and you 19:32 go back doing the same things, you're going to mess the things 19:37 up that prayer just changed. 19:42 Don't unearth what's already been buried. 19:46 Don't dig up what's already been done. 19:49 Some folk try to dig up stuff on other folk. 19:52 I got something on her, I got something on him, he dumped me 19:56 20 years ago. 19:56 Let it go. 19:58 Aud: (unintelligible) PB: He dumped me 10 years ago, 20:01 she told me you were this, he told me you were that. 20:03 If it's dead and buried, let it go, earth to earth, 20:09 ashes to ashes, dust to dust. 20:12 Do I have a witness in this place? 20:14 Let me go on and finish this. 20:15 In Jonah, chapter 1, Jonah runs from God. 20:18 In Jonah, chapter 2, finds himself in the belly of a fish. 20:23 But then toward the end of the chapter, the Bible says 20:26 he has a change of heart. 20:27 He says, Enough is enough. 20:31 He says, I'm tired of running, I'm tired of doing it my way, 20:36 and it's gotten me nowhere. 20:37 I'm going to do it now God's way. 20:40 Now, Jonah 2:9 says, "But I will sacrifice unto thee with the 20:44 voice of Thanksgiving." 20:48 The Word of God says that Jonah says, "I will pay 20:50 that that I have vowed; salvation is of the Lord." 20:54 In other words, Jonah says, I will pay what I said 20:58 I will pay. 20:59 Lord, I will do what I said I'm gonna do. 21:03 Don't you know, friends of mine, there's a danger of making a vow 21:07 to God and not keeping it. 21:08 Don't aXay with God. 21:09 I said, don't play God. 21:11 The very thing you said you were going to do, you better do it. 21:14 God is tired of inconsistent Christians making promises 21:16 they can't keep and they don't want to keep. 21:18 Here we go: Lord, I lost my job. 21:22 I need employment. 21:23 I don't know, God, what I'm going to do, but I know that, 21:27 God, you own the cattle on a thousand hills. 21:29 Hallelujah, God. 21:31 And God, I worship you. 21:32 So God, if you just get me this job, God, I promise 21:39 I'll serve you. 21:40 And just as soon as you get a new job, 21:42 you're too busy for God. 21:43 Lord, I'm tired of being in the world. 21:46 I'm tired of all the drama in the world, I'm tired of people 21:48 breaking my heart. 21:49 I'm ready to give my life to you, God. 21:51 Jesus, I don't want a man. 21:52 Jesus, I don't want a woman. 21:53 Jesus, I just want you. 21:55 And two weeks later, you meet somebody else and you're gone. 22:00 Lord, if you just help me pass this test. 22:09 Aud: (unintelligible) PB: I know I didn't study. 22:14 Aud: (laughter) PB: But this is what I like. 22:21 God, if you will direct my pencil to circle 22:24 the right answer. 22:25 Aud: (cheers, applause) PB: I promise you, God, 22:33 I won't miss church anymore. 22:36 And the moment you pass the test, hallelujah, thank God. 22:43 And you're nowhere to be found on Sabbath morning. 22:46 Amen, somebody. 22:48 Lord, I've got cancer. 22:51 But if you just heal my body this one time, I promise you, 22:55 God, I'll serve you till I die. 22:58 But the moment that cancer goes in remission, your service to 23:06 God goes into remission too. 23:09 Don't play with God. 23:13 Prayer is not for emergency use only, just like heaven is not 23:18 a fire escape from hell. 23:21 God needs committed Christians, not inconsistent opportunists. 23:27 Let me tell you something. 23:30 Some of us have been out there doing some foolishness. 23:33 Some of us have been diagnosed with a terminal illness. 23:37 But today you can come into the house of God and say, God healed 23:43 me. 23:45 God saved me. 23:47 God rescued me. 23:49 Somebody ought to thank God, because today you would not be 23:53 here if it were not for God. 23:55 Aud: Amen. 23:56 PB: Oh, yes, somebody ought to testify of the goodness of God. 24:01 God, I wouldn't have the job if it weren't for you. 24:04 Some of you know God, I wouldn't have a degree if it weren't for 24:07 you. 24:08 I wouldn't have this car if it weren't for you. 24:11 God, we wouldn't have this church if it weren't for you. 24:13 God, I wouldn't be back in school, if it weren't for you. 24:21 My marriage wouldn't be together if it weren't for you. 24:24 My tumor wouldn't be benign if it weren't for you. 24:26 God, I wouldn't have anything if it weren't for you. 24:29 If it had not been for the Lord on my side. 24:32 That's why on Sabbath morning I enter into his gates with 24:36 thanksgiving. 24:37 I enter his courts with praise. 24:38 I'm thankful until him. 24:40 I don't have to wait on the praise team. 24:42 I don't have to wait on the choir. 24:44 I don't have to wait on the elders and the pastors and the 24:46 musicians. 24:47 But I will bless the Lord at all times, and His praise shall 24:51 continually be in my mouth. 24:53 But then the Bible says in Jonah, chapter 2, verse 10, "And 24:57 the Lord spake unto the fish." 25:02 Let's try that again. 25:07 Verse 10 of chapter 2: "And the Lord spake until the fish," 25:16 comma. 25:19 You know, when you come to Oakwood, you have to learn 25:20 how to read the bulletins. 25:21 You've got to know when the commas are there 25:22 and the periods are there. 25:24 "And the Lord spake to the fish," comma. 25:29 You mean to tell me the Lord had a conversation with a fish? 25:34 Picture that. 25:36 God talking to a fish. 25:39 But notice, if you look at the text carefully, this is why 25:41 you've got to really look at the Word of God. 25:44 Notice, we don't know what God told the fish. 25:49 The only thing the Bible says is, "God spoke to the" what, 25:53 everybody? 25:54 It does not say what God told the fish. 26:01 >: The Breath of Life gift offer this week is "Surprised 26:03 by Love," by pastor and international speaker 26:06 Elizabeth Viera Talbot. 26:07 Find out how people in the Bible were suradised by God's love. 26:10 Adam and Eve were surprised. 26:11 The deceitful serpent and the Pharisees were surprised. 26:14 It surprised the disciples and even the heavenly angels. 26:17 And God's surprises of love continue all around us today. 26:21 Join with Elizabeth as you get a fresh view of the greatest 26:24 story ever told. 26:25 From the kidnapping of God's children to the rescue, 26:30 from the ransom to the reunion. 26:31 "Surprised by Love" is yours for a gift of $5 or more. 26:34 Just call our toll free number, 877-BOL-OFFER. 26:37 That's 877-265-6333. 26:41 Please have your credit card ready when you call. 26:44 Or you may write us to request your copy. 26:46 Just send your check to Breath of Life, P.O.
