00:22 Pastor Byrd: Some will say, why do we praise him
00:23 like we do?
00:26 I don't know what else to do but praise him.
00:34 Glorious, wonderful, marvelous.
00:38 When I get to heaven I'll be saying,
00:44 holy, holy, holy, and worship his name.
00:50 If you would, take your Bibles and turn with me to the Book
00:53 of Mark, Chapter 5.
01:00 I'll give you the full context and read a few verses today.
01:10 Those who are watching, Mark 5:21.
01:18 If you have it, let me hear you say Amen.
01:21 The Word of God says to us today:
01:24 "And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto
01:30 the other side, much people gathered unto him: and he
01:35 was nigh unto the sea.
01:39 And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue,
01:41 Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at
01:44 his feet, and besought him greatly, saying, My little
01:47 daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee,
01:51 come and lay thy hands on her, that she may
01:53 be healed; and she shall live.
01:55 And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him,
01:59 and thronged him."
02:00 Verse 25: "And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood
02:05 twelve years, and had suffered many things of many physicians,
02:10 and had spent all that she had,
02:12 and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,
02:16 when she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind,
02:19 and touched his garment.
02:21 For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be,"
02:28 what, everybody?
02:29 "Whole.
02:30 And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up;
02:32 and she felt in her body that she was healed
02:35 of that plague.
02:36 And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had
02:38 gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said,
02:42 Who touched my clothes?
02:44 And his disciples, said unto him, Thou seest the multitude
02:48 thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?
02:51 And he looked round about to see her that had
02:55 done this thing.
02:56 But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what
02:58 was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him
03:00 all the truth.
03:01 And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made
03:04 thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.
03:11 "While he yet spake, there came from the ruler
03:14 of the synagogue's house certain which said,
03:17 Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou
03:23 the Master any further?
03:26 As soon as Jesus herd the word that was spoken, he saith unto
03:29 the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.
03:36 And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter,
03:41 and James, and John the brother of James.
03:43 And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue,
03:47 and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly.
03:49 And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye
03:52 this ado, and weepth?
03:53 the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.
03:56 And they laughed him to scorn.
03:59 But when he put them all out, he taketh the father
04:05 and the mother of the damsel, and them that
04:07 were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying.
04:09 And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her,
04:12 Taligha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say
04:15 unto thee, arise.
04:17 And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she
04:21 was of the age of twelve years.
04:24 And they were astonished with a great astonishment.
04:27 And he charged them straitly that no man should know it;
04:31 and commanded that something should be given her to eat."
04:38 It's my turn.
04:42 God, today it's my turn.
04:46 My turn, God, for a blessing.
04:51 So even, God, as I preach this Word, administer to me
04:53 right now.
04:55 But not just to me, to everyone who is watching, to everyone
04:58 who is here, God, may your Holy Ghost move

05:02 God, we proclaim that you're wonderful, you're glorious,

05:09 Now forgive me of my sins, hide me behind your cross,
05:11 and when the appeal is made, may individuals come,
05:14 giving their lives to you.
05:16 In the name of Jesus, we pray.
05:19 Amen.
05:22 As most of you know, I'm a very serious sports fan.
05:31 I love sports, watching sports, playing sports, and attending
05:41 sports games, particularly basketball.
05:46 Now, when I lived in Atlanta, my family and I were regulars
05:52 at the Atlanta Hawks games.
05:56 Not so much that we liked the Hawks,
06:02 but more so when the Heat, the Lakers and the Thunder
06:09 came to town, we had to have tickets.
06:13 Do I have a witness in this place?
06:16 Now, watching the games in person at the arena with all
06:24 the fans there in Philips Arena was fun.
06:28 The shots, the passes, the dunks,
06:31 when we did the waves.
06:33 In Atlanta they have what they call a kiss cam.
06:37 When we saw all of this, it was fun.
06:41 But the part that I didn't like was what took place
06:46 before the game.
06:48 And to be more specific, I didn't like the crowds
06:52 rushing to get in line to get in the arena.
06:55 People would push in line.
06:59 People would squabble in line.
07:03 People would crowd you in line, invade your personal space
07:10 in line.
07:11 People would step on your toes in line.
07:17 It was a pain to stand in line.
07:22 But what really made me mad was when somebody would try to
07:27 cut line.
07:30 I mean, after all, if my family and I had to stand in line,
07:37 then everybody had to stand in line.
07:42 So, one day we're standing in line
07:45 to get into the game.
07:48 We have to go through the turnstile and give
07:50 our tickets to the attendant in order to get
07:53 into the arena.
07:54 We're standing in line, minding our own business,
08:00 and then all of a sudden here comes Johnny Come Late,
08:05 trying to cut us in line.
08:09 Now, before I went off I had to look around to see if anybody
08:23 I knew saw me to make sure that nobody would say,
08:28 I saw Pastor Byrd in line and he was
08:31 going off on somebody.
08:33 He looked like he was getting ready to fight somebody.
08:37 You know what I'm talking about.
08:39 In this day and age you have to be careful, because people
08:42 have cell phones, iPhones, iPads and everything
08:46 and they will record everything you do,
08:51 put it on Facebook and put it on YouTube
08:54 and the Internet trying to make something
08:56 appear more than what it is.
08:59 That's why I'm careful how I pose with people
09:02 for pictures.
09:05 Brothers, when you hug the women,
09:08 you hug them like this.
09:09 You can't be all over them.
09:10 Trying to help somebody.
09:13 Brothers, when you hug another brother, it can't be all that
09:18 cheek-to-cheek stuff.
09:20 You've got to say, well, man, let me dap you up
09:23 and keep it moving.
09:24 Do I have a witness in this place?
09:29 So I look around.
09:30 And it's doesn't appear that anybody who knows me
09:36 sees me.
09:38 And so I look at the person who cut my family and me
09:42 in line and I'm bigger than him.
09:48 So I say to myself, if he gets crazy, because you know folks
09:53 will get crazy, I'm bigger than him and I can take him
09:56 out, Amen, somebody.
09:58 Let me give you some advice.
09:59 Don't get crazy and get in a fight
10:01 with somebody you can't beat.
10:02 Come on, say Amen.
10:03 There's no harm in running.
10:05 Do I have a witness in this place?
10:08 And so, I see this brother and I say to him,
10:12 hold up, brother, hold up.
10:16 You're not going to cut me and my family and everybody
10:20 else who's standing in line here.
10:23 You see, there's a science in that, I have to bring
10:25 everybody else who was standing in there in this
10:27 situation, so just in case he had backup, I had backup, too.
10:31 Come on, say Amen.
10:34 We've been standing here like everybody else.
10:38 Get to steppin' and get to the back of the line.
10:44 It's my turn.
10:46 Everybody chimed in, yeah, get to steppin'.
10:49 Get to the back of the line.
10:53 You heard it, get to steppin'.
10:55 I felt good.
10:57 Ha-ha.
10:58 I felt like I was the man because it was my turn.
11:01 You ever been at a stoplight and it's your turn to drive
11:06 and somebody cuts you off?
11:09 It happened to me right here at Oakwood.
11:11 I almost lost my religion.
11:12 Come on, pray for me, everybody.
11:15 You get mad and you say, what's wrong with him?
11:18 What's wrong with her?
11:20 It's my turn.
11:21 Anybody been on the job at Oakwood 15 years,
11:25 paid your dues, started as a secretary,
11:31 went back to school and got your degree,
11:33 even went to graduate school.
11:36 You're productive, you're innovative,
11:38 you've trained others.
11:39 In fact, you keep training other people but they keep
11:42 getting the position you trained them for.
11:45 You're up for a promotion and this time you know
11:49 you're going to get it, but you're passed over again.
11:52 And you say, but it's my turn.
11:57 I don't know what your situation is,
12:01 but one of the greatest frustrations in life
12:04 can be when you feel it's your turn
12:07 and it doesn't happen for you.
12:09 Well, as we come back in this new year
12:13 I've just stopped by to tell somebody to hang on
12:18 in there because your blessing is on the way.
12:23 Because every experience that we have in our lives
12:26 is tied to a purpose.
12:28 Everything that God allows to happen in your life
12:32 through his providencal will is a sovereign setup,
12:36 because remember that your setback is just a setup
12:39 for a comeback.
12:41 You have to learn how to give God the glory for whatever
12:45 you're going through because what you're going through is
12:48 tied to something bigger that God has in store in your life.
12:51 Don't you forget what the Apostle Paul said
12:54 when he said, We know that all things
12:57 work together for good to them who love the Lord
13:00 and are called according to his purpose.
13:02 Sometimes you're gifted, but it's not your turn yet.
13:07 Sometimes you're talented, but it's not your time yet.
13:12 Sometimes you have God's anointing,
13:15 but it's not your season yet.
13:18 And let me tell you something about seasons,
13:21 because I always say, don't get mad and hate
13:23 on somebody else because God is blessing them now
13:25 and it seems that God is passing you over.
13:28 If God blesses them you better learn how
13:30 to become a cheerleader, because if he's blessing him
13:32 he must be in the neighborhood and it's just a matter of time
13:35 before he blesses you.
13:38 But maybe, your situation is like Jairus'.
13:41 Bible tells that Jairus is the ruler of
13:44 the synagogue, which means that Jairus was the one
13:47 in charge of public worship, Jairus was over the choir,
13:52 Jairus was over the elders board, Jairus was the praise
13:55 and worship leader.
13:56 Jairus was the pastor.
13:58 Jairus is a religious man.
14:00 But the Bible says that his daughter is sick unto death.
14:04 Lesson number one for us today, just because you work
14:06 for God and serve his church that does not exempt you
14:09 from trial and tribulation.
14:11 In fact, you've got to go through some fire to come out
14:14 as pure gold.
14:15 You can be the pastor, you can be the elder, you can
14:18 be the deacon, you can be the Sabbath school
14:20 teacher, but you're going to go through something.
14:22 I've been through enough stuff to know that you can pray
14:24 until your lips are dry, pray until your knees
14:28 have welts in them, but every now and then
14:30 you're going to go through something.
14:32 Somebody you love is going to die.
14:34 Somebody is going to get sick.
14:36 Somebody is going to hurt you.
14:38 The Bible declared that Jairus' daughter is sick unto death
14:43 and there is a multitude that is gathered
14:45 by the seashore and Jairus petitioned Jesus.
14:48 He petitions the Master because he recognizes is that,
14:51 what I need I don't need from anybody else.
14:54 What I need I can only get from Jesus.
14:56 Anybody ever felt that way?
14:58 There's a crowd at the seashore, multitudes have
15:01 thronged Jesus Christ.
15:03 They gathered to hear Jesus.
15:04 The Bible declares that much has happened
15:06 prior to Jesus running into Jairus.
15:09 Jesus has turned water into wine,
15:11 Jesus has healed Peter's mother-in-law,
15:13 Jesus has healed the paralytic that was lowered
15:15 through the roof, Jesus has healed the man
15:18 with the withered hand.
15:19 Jesus has healed the two blind men.
15:21 Jesus has stilled the storm on the Sea of Galilee.
15:25 Jesus has healed the demoniac of Gadara.
15:27 Much has happened.
15:29 But then here come Jairus.
15:32 Jairus was in the multitude with a bunch of folk,
15:35 but he did not allow the crowd to stop him
15:38 from getting what he needed.
15:41 or anybody stop you from getting your blessing.
15:49 There will come a time in your life when you have to
15:53 make up your mind that it doesn't make a difference
15:56 how many folk are around you, how many folk are looking
15:59 at you, but you have to say, I will not be intimidated
16:03 by the crowd.
16:04 I'm not worried about what people may say,
16:06 I'm not worried about what folk will do,
16:08 by any means necessary I'm getting to Jesus.
16:11 When you're in the crowd trying to get Jesus,
16:13 you're not in the crowd like everybody else.
16:16 You're not in the crowd to be a spectator.
16:19 You're not in the crowd to be an onlooker.
16:21 You don't come to church to be a spectator.
16:24 You're not in the crowd just to try to find out
16:26 who's here and who's not here.
16:29 That's why sometimes you have to tell folk, listen,
16:32 if you knew what I was here for you'd understand why I act
16:38 like I act.
16:39 You'd understand why I sing like I sing, why I shout
16:45 like I shout.
16:46 You'd understand that my praise is not programmed
16:49 because I'm trying to get in the very presence of God,
16:52 because in the presence of God there's fullness of joy.
16:55 I don't care who calls on Jesus, but my thing is,
16:59 Lord, pass me not, oh, gentle Savior,
17:01 hear my humble cry, while the others
17:04 thou are calling, Lord, do not pass me by.
17:10 But what do you do when you're trying to get to the Lord
17:15 and it's interrupted?
17:18 What do you do when you need a miracle from Jesus
17:23 and it's disrupted?
17:26 What do you do when you need healing for your body
17:28 and peace for your soul and it's broken up
17:30 by a distracting, disturbing force you
17:33 can't control?
17:35 What do you do when Jesus says, yes, I hear you and I'm
17:39 on my way to your house, your daughter is sick,
17:42 but it's your day, it's your turn.
17:44 Come on, Jesus.
17:46 The crowd is following you and Jesus to your house.
17:52 What do you do when it's your turn, your time, your season
17:54 and it's interrupted?
17:56 Ellen White says that as soon as Jairus approached Jesus,
18:00 Jesus set out at once to Jairus' house.
18:04 Set out at once.
18:06 Didn't meander all around, didn't wait, didn't pause,
18:09 didn't hesitate, but she says, immediately he began
18:12 to Jairus' house.
18:13 The trip wasn't long, but she said people just kept crowding
18:17 around him.
18:19 Jesus then follows Jairus to his house.
18:22 The Bible says there's a woman who heard Jesus would
18:25 be passing by.
18:26 The Bible says she had been sick for 12 long years.
18:29 She needed something from Jesus, too.
18:31 She presses through the crowd and says, if I could just touch
18:34 his clothes.
18:35 If I could just touch the hem of his garment
18:39 I'll be made whole.
18:42 But then, wait a minute, Jesus is on his way
18:47 to Jairus' house.
18:49 Jairus' daughter is sick.
18:52 It's Jairus' turn.
18:54 But what do you do when your turn is interrupted.
18:58 You're Jairus, you're walking with Jesus, Jesus is about
19:02 to give you what you need, but then Jesus stops and says,
19:07 somebody touched me.
19:10 Well, yes, Lord, somebody has touched you.
19:15 There's a bunch of folk out here in line, standing,
19:20 shoving, pushing, touching, but, Jesus, come on,
19:24 my daughter is sick.
19:27 You're the only one that can heal my daughter.
19:30 We're almost at our house.
19:33 I need a miracle and I need it today and all these other folk,
19:36 I know they might need help, but, Jesus, it's my turn.
19:41 I need my daughter to be healed today.
19:46 So, I ask you what you do when it's your turn,
19:49 but somebody else has to get theirs first.
19:53 Somebody else has to get their healing first.
19:55 Somebody else has to get their blessing first.
19:57 Somebody else has to get their degree first.
19:59 I've come to tell somebody today that maybe you need to
20:01 understand that even when it looks like somebody has to get
20:03 their miracle first it doesn't dilute the fact that your
20:06 miracle is on the way.
20:07 Maybe God is just trying to tell you, I'm trying to see
20:13 how you're going to act when I bless other people before
20:18 I bless you.
20:19 I'm trying to see if you're going to have an attitude
20:24 when somebody else gets the miracle, when somebody else
20:26 gets the promotion, when somebody else gets the job
20:28 first, when somebody else passes the test first,
20:32 when somebody else graduates first,
20:34 when somebody else gets married first,
20:36 when somebody else has the baby first,
20:39 when somebody else has the car or the house first,
20:41 when somebody else gets the healing first.
20:46 Here's the woman with the issue of blood,
20:51 she slows Jesus up and the Bible says
20:56 she gets her healing.
21:00 Jesus heals the woman and he says, daughter, thy faith
21:04 has made thee whole.
21:05 But then what about Jairus?
21:13 A messenger comes to Jairus and says, look, man,
21:20 don't worry about it.
21:22 Don't trouble the Master.
21:24 Your daughter is dead.
21:27 Now here's brother Jairus.
21:30 If it weren't for this woman we would have been on time.
21:38 If it weren't for this interruption we would have
21:41 gotten home on time.
21:42 I'm glad this woman got healed, but it weren't for
21:46 this distraction my daughter would be breathing right now.
21:53 I like how Ellen White puts it, she says in "Desire of Ages"
21:55 that Jairus caught the ear of Jesus.
22:00 Jesus responds, be not afraid, only believe.
22:08 In other words, whose report are you going to believe?
22:15 Don't you know who I am?
22:19 I am the Resurrection and the Life.
22:24 If I do show up late, I'm still early.
22:28 You're with the answer, so why are you focusing on
22:31 the problem?
22:32 It's not a miracle if I get there when you want me to,
22:36 it's a miracle when I show up late.
22:40 Lesson number three, he may not come
22:43 when you want him, but he's always right on time.
22:49 He's an on-time God.
22:51 Yes, he is.
22:53 Let me throw this in quickly.
22:54 You know the message that came with the bad news.
22:56 Let me throw this in quickly.
22:57 That's why you have to surround yourself
22:59 with positive people.
23:02 You see, negative people told him, don't worry,
23:04 she's dead.
23:05 Move on.
23:06 Don't trouble the Master.
23:07 But you have to be around positive people.
23:09 You don't need to be around folk who mean you no good.
23:11 You can do bad by yourself.
23:12 You have to be around positive people.
23:16 You have to be around winners.
23:18 Everybody say winners.
23:19 You have to be around conquerors.
23:22 And let me talk about winners for a minute.
23:25 There is a certain mentality associated with
23:28 being a winner.
23:29 People who are winners hang together.
23:32 Let me say that one more time.
23:33 People who are winners hang together.
23:39 Winners expect to win.
23:41 Winners don't expect to lose.
23:44 That's why certain sports teams, the Yankees,
23:46 for example, they always have winning seasons because they
23:50 have a culture of winning.
23:52 Some sports teams always have losing seasons.
23:56 But let me tell you this, that's not just in the secular
23:58 world, but that's in the spiritual world, too.
24:01 If you a spiritual winner you will gravitate to other people
24:03 who are spiritual winners, because there's a mentality
24:06 that this isn't about money or anything tangible,
24:08 but there's a mentality that goes along with winning.
24:11 That's why it's hard to defeat a champion.
24:14 That's why you're always told, never underestimate the heart
24:18 of a champion.
24:19 And once you get the mentality of a winner, you can listen
24:22 to a person talk a few minutes and it either
24:24 feeds you or it doesn't and sooner or later,
24:27 the things that don't feed you, you don't spend time
24:33 fooling with them, because it's counterproductive
24:35 to where you're trying to go.
24:37 You see, I'm a winner.
24:39 You're a winner.
24:40 We're more than conquerors.
24:41 I'm trying to help somebody up in here.
24:44 Understand that I'm trying to go somewhere.
24:47 I'm not just here just to be here.
24:50 I say it all the time, if you're going to come
24:52 to church, church ought to mean something.
24:54 I'm trying to get to God's great heaven.
24:57 I'm trying to get to God's great kingdom.
24:59 I don't fight for victory, I fight from victory,
25:03 because Satan has already been defeated.
25:07 And then the converse of that.
25:10 Losing and failing also promote a mindset.
25:14 You get around failing people and failing circumstances
25:17 and listen to the negative thoughts and you'll find
25:19 yourself unable to get back up again, because not only are
25:22 you down, but your environment is down.
25:24 And everybody that is talking to you is down.
25:26 And you develop a mentality that is built around
25:29 your condition.
25:30 That's why you've got to watch who you hang with.
25:33 Watch who your friends are.
25:35 You are the company you keep.
25:38 Be not afraid, Jesus said.
25:41 Only believe.
25:42 Where there is fear there is little faith.
25:45 Faith drives out fear.
25:48 Jairus had been strong in faith that he found no
25:51 difficulty in believing that Jesus can heal his daughter
25:54 but now he's called upon to exercise greater faith,
25:58 faith that the clutch of death itself could not break.
