The herald angels sing ? ? "Glory to the newborn King!" ? 00:05:16.86\00:05:37.93 [applause] PB: For Christians, 00:05:37.93\00:05:58.13 Jesus is the central figure of the Bible. 00:05:58.13\00:06:02.30 His life is told in all four of the gospels as recorded 00:06:02.30\00:06:05.20 in the New Testament: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. 00:06:05.20\00:06:11.80 Christians observe Christmas, December 25th, as the holiday 00:06:11.80\00:06:15.56 commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. 00:06:15.56\00:06:18.66 Now, while it was not specifically on December 25th 00:06:18.66\00:06:22.53 that the gift of Jesus Christ was given, it is inspiring to 00:06:22.53\00:06:27.23 know that such a gift was ever even given. 00:06:27.23\00:06:31.13 To know that God loved us so much that he sent his only Son 00:06:31.13\00:06:35.53 to save and redeem us is awesome, astounding, 00:06:35.53\00:06:40.36 and amazing. 00:06:40.36\00:06:42.06 John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world 00:06:42.06\00:06:45.83 that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever 00:06:45.83\00:06:49.83 believeth in him should not perish but have 00:06:49.83\00:06:53.06 everlasting life." 00:06:53.06\00:06:55.76 So although we don't know exactly when Jesus was born, 00:06:55.76\00:07:00.80 we do know why he was born. 00:07:00.80\00:07:03.26 Although we don't know exactly how Jesus was born, we do know 00:07:03.26\00:07:09.00 for whom he was born. 00:07:09.00\00:07:11.63 Jesus came into this world to save the human family, 00:07:11.63\00:07:15.93 to set us free, and to give us eternal life. 00:07:15.93\00:07:21.03 So during this holiday season, please don't get caught up 00:07:21.03\00:07:25.30 in all the propaganda that Christmas is only about 00:07:25.30\00:07:29.06 Santa Claus, a Christmas tree, Santa's elves, Rudolph the 00:07:29.06\00:07:35.30 Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, 00:07:35.30\00:07:40.50 mall visits, packaged presents, eggnog or 00:07:40.50\00:07:44.66 a partridge in a pear tree. 00:07:44.66\00:07:48.06 While all of these things have their seasonal place, 00:07:48.06\00:07:51.80 Jesus is the real reason for the season. 00:07:51.80\00:07:56.83 You see, friends of mine, Jesus is better than 00:07:56.83\00:08:00.10 fictitious Santa Claus. 00:08:00.10\00:08:02.70 Jesus is the real thing. 00:08:02.70\00:08:05.20 Comparative analysis suggests that Santa lives at the 00:08:05.20\00:08:09.46 North Pole, but my Jesus is everywhere. 00:08:09.46\00:08:13.56 Santa arrives in on a sleigh, but Jesus rides on the wind 00:08:13.56\00:08:19.26 and walks on the water. 00:08:19.26\00:08:21.60 Santa comes only once a year, but Jesus is an ever-present 00:08:21.60\00:08:27.83 help in time of trouble. 00:08:27.83\00:08:33.10 [applause] You see, you have 00:08:33.10\00:08:38.73 to wait in line to see Santa, but Jesus is as close as the 00:08:38.73\00:08:44.06 mention of his name. 00:08:44.06\00:08:47.00 Santa doesn't even know your name. 00:08:47.00\00:08:49.60 All he can say is, "Hi, little girl. 00:08:49.60\00:08:51.73 Hi, little boy." 00:08:51.73\00:08:53.30 But Jesus knew our names before we knew our names. 00:08:53.30\00:08:57.03 Not only does he know our names, but knows our 00:08:57.03\00:08:59.83 addresses, our histories, our futures, and even the number 00:08:59.83\00:09:05.80 of hairs on our heads. 00:09:05.80\00:09:07.00 All Santa can offer is "Ho ho ho," 00:09:07.00\00:09:11.33 but Jesus offers health, help, and hope. 00:09:11.33\00:09:15.73 Santa says, "You better not cry," 00:09:15.73\00:09:18.13 but Jesus says, "Cast all your cares on me, 00:09:18.13\00:09:21.80 because I care for you." 00:09:21.80\00:09:25.10 [applause] Yes, Santa may make 00:09:25.10\00:09:27.36 you chuckle. 00:09:27.36\00:09:28.40 Jesus gives you joy that the world didn't give, and the 00:09:28.40\00:09:32.06 world can't take away. 00:09:32.06\00:09:34.33 While Santa puts gifts under a Christmas tree, it was Jesus 00:09:34.33\00:09:40.53 who became our gift and died on Calvary's tree. 00:09:40.53\00:09:45.50 Jesus is the real thing. 00:09:45.50\00:09:48.50 He's not Santa Claus. 00:09:48.50\00:09:50.83 He's not fictitious. 00:09:50.83\00:09:52.80 He's the real gift. 00:09:52.80\00:09:54.43 The real present. 00:09:54.43\00:09:55.93 And so we come to reflect and celebrate the real present, 00:09:55.93\00:10:01.13 Jesus Christ. 00:10:01.13\00:10:02.73 He's the real gift of Christmas. 00:10:02.73\00:10:05.80 Nearly 2,000 years ago on a special night in Bethlehem, 00:10:05.80\00:10:11.43 this present, this gift was born into the world. 00:10:11.43\00:10:16.13 He was not born in a castle, not born in a five-star hotel, 00:10:16.13\00:10:21.56 not born on an island resort. 00:10:21.56\00:10:24.40 There were no kings or queens among him. 00:10:24.40\00:10:30.20 But with no room in the local hotels, 00:10:30.20\00:10:33.03 Jesus was born among oxen, among donkeys. 00:10:33.03\00:10:36.66 Born in the open air, wrapped in swaddling clothes, 00:10:36.66\00:10:42.03 lying in a manger. 00:10:42.03\00:10:44.16 Luke describes this special night in Luke 2:8-14: 00:10:44.16\00:10:52.16 "And there were in the same country 00:10:52.16\00:10:53.53 shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over 00:10:53.53\00:10:58.43 their flock by night. 00:10:58.43\00:11:00.43 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory 00:11:00.43\00:11:04.10 of the Lord shone round about them: and they were 00:11:04.10\00:11:07.53 sore afraid. 00:11:07.53\00:11:09.23 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring 00:11:09.23\00:11:12.86 you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 00:11:12.86\00:11:19.90 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, 00:11:19.90\00:11:24.50 which is Christ the Lord. 00:11:24.50\00:11:27.50 And this shall be a sign unto you; 00:11:27.50\00:11:29.46 Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, 00:11:29.46\00:11:34.06 lying in a manger. 00:11:34.06\00:11:34.73 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the 00:11:34.73\00:11:38.36 heavenly host...saying, Glory to God 00:11:38.36\00:11:42.20 in the highest, and on earth peace, 00:11:42.20\00:11:45.50 good will toward men." 00:11:45.50\00:11:48.30 This special night that this gift was given, it was a 00:11:48.30\00:11:52.43 silent night, a holy night. 00:11:52.43\00:11:55.36 All was calm, all was bright. 00:11:55.36\00:11:58.06 Round yon virgin, mother and child, holy infant 00:11:58.06\00:12:02.90 so tender and mild. 00:12:02.90\00:12:06.13 Sleep in heavenly peace. 00:12:06.13\00:12:13.03 [applause] ? [applause] 00:19:35.10\00:20:24.53 PB: Matthew 2:1-12 states, "Now when Jesus was 00:20:24.53\00:20:31.46 born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, 00:20:31.46\00:20:36.86 behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 00:20:36.86\00:20:40.60 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? 00:20:40.60\00:20:45.30 for we have seen his star in the east, and are come 00:20:45.30\00:20:48.93 to worship him. 00:20:48.93\00:20:50.83 When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, 00:20:50.83\00:20:55.30 and all Jerusalem with him. 00:20:55.30\00:20:57.30 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes 00:20:57.30\00:21:01.40 of the people together, he demanded of them 00:21:01.40\00:21:04.53 where Christ should be born. 00:21:04.53\00:21:07.50 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus 00:21:07.50\00:21:10.66 it is written by the prophet, And thou Bethlehem, in the 00:21:10.66\00:21:14.86 land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: 00:21:14.86\00:21:19.70 for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule 00:21:19.70\00:21:23.76 my people Israel. 00:21:23.76\00:21:26.20 Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, 00:21:26.20\00:21:29.33 enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. 00:21:29.33\00:21:33.53 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search 00:21:33.53\00:21:38.23 diligently for the young child; and when ye have found 00:21:38.23\00:21:42.20 him, bring me word again, that I may come 00:21:42.20\00:21:45.16 and worship him also. 00:21:45.16\00:21:47.16 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, 00:21:47.16\00:21:49.50 the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, 00:21:49.50\00:21:55.03 till it came and stood over where 00:21:55.03\00:21:57.63 the young child was. 00:21:57.63\00:21:59.06 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding 00:21:59.06\00:22:03.36 great joy. 00:22:03.36\00:22:05.56 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young 00:22:05.56\00:22:08.96 child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped 00:22:08.96\00:22:12.20 him: and when they had opened their treasures, they 00:22:12.20\00:22:15.46 presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense 00:22:15.46\00:22:19.70 and myrrh. 00:22:19.70\00:22:21.63 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not 00:22:21.63\00:22:24.86 return to Herod, they departed into their own country 00:22:24.86\00:22:28.30 another way." 00:22:28.30\00:22:30.60 Now, Matthew chapter 2 is very interesting. 00:22:30.60\00:22:34.70 It is very interesting because of its place in scripture. 00:22:34.70\00:22:38.33 It is the very inception of the entrance of Jesus Christ 00:22:38.33\00:22:42.20 onto the earth. 00:22:42.20\00:22:44.60 There is a very powerful revelation that I want you 00:22:44.60\00:22:48.03 to get out of this. 00:22:48.03\00:22:49.26 The very birth of Jesus Christ, the nativity reality, 00:22:49.26\00:22:54.00 that God has sent his Son into the earthly realm. 00:22:54.00\00:22:59.36 And it is interesting because what we witness now are these 00:22:59.36\00:23:03.26 wise men from the East. 00:23:03.26\00:23:06.00 They are historically and theologically 00:23:06.00\00:23:09.26 referred to as magi. 00:23:09.26\00:23:12.16 Matthew is the only one of the gospels to mention the magi. 00:23:12.16\00:23:18.53 The magi, they are stargazers. 00:23:18.53\00:23:22.16 They have waited with great expectancy for the coming of 00:23:22.16\00:23:25.40 Jesus Christ, the Messiah. 00:23:25.40\00:23:27.90 They have been told that the Messiah would eventually come. 00:23:27.90\00:23:30.53 And now, according to historical records, they have 00:23:30.53\00:23:34.50 an assumption of Jesus will come looking like. 00:23:34.50\00:23:38.90 Thinking he would come in on a chariot, coming with 00:23:38.90\00:23:42.20 a mighty army. 00:23:42.20\00:23:43.56 But they are about to be blown out of the water, because he 00:23:43.56\00:23:47.40 does not come like they think he's going to come. 00:23:47.40\00:23:51.03 That's the powerful thing about the Lord, my friends. 00:23:51.03\00:23:54.40 He oftentimes will show up in ways that you 00:23:54.40\00:23:57.96 least expect it, and where you least expect it. 00:23:57.96\00:24:02.70 But the good news is that when he does show up, you know he's 00:24:02.70\00:24:08.26 always right on time. 00:24:08.26\00:24:11.70 He's an on-time God, yes, he is. You see, 00:24:11.70\00:24:17.10 God moves in his time. 00:24:17.10\00:24:19.70 He doesn't move in our time. 00:24:19.70\00:24:20.86 God's ways are not our ways, and his time is not our time. 00:24:20.86\00:24:25.53 Matthew 2 teaches that it was time for the Messiah to come. 00:24:25.53\00:24:32.03 And the truth of the matter is this: these wise men 00:24:32.03\00:24:36.16 had been expecting the Messiah to come. 00:24:36.16\00:24:39.23 As a matter of fact, the Hebrew prophecy 00:24:39.23\00:24:41.83 had declared it in Isaiah 9:6: "Unto us a child is born. 00:24:41.83\00:24:48.56 Unto us a son is given. 00:24:48.56\00:24:51.83 And the government shall be upon his shoulders. 00:24:51.83\00:24:55.43 And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty 00:24:55.43\00:25:00.56 God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace." 00:25:00.56\00:25:05.30 Now, the Bible never tells us how many wise men 00:25:05.30\00:25:10.50 or magi there were. 00:25:10.50\00:25:12.96 But what we do know is that they brought three gifts to 00:25:12.96\00:25:16.26 celebrate the birth of Jesus, under the supervision of God. 00:25:16.26\00:25:20.53 The magi followed the brightly shining star that guided 00:25:20.53\00:25:25.60 them to Bethlehem. 00:25:25.60\00:25:27.23 But before they got to Bethlehem, the Bible says 00:25:27.23\00:25:31.23 the wise men made a stop in Jerusalem. 00:25:31.23\00:25:35.13 They made a stop to speak with King Herod. 00:25:35.13\00:25:37.13 The Bible teaches that they asked Herod where they could 00:25:37.13\00:25:40.03 find the newly born king so they could go to worship him. 00:25:40.03\00:25:44.53 This troubled Herod, made Herod mad, made Herod jealous. 00:25:44.53\00:25:49.30 He didn't like the idea of someone else, much less a 00:25:49.30\00:25:53.33 child, being called a king. 00:25:53.33\00:25:57.33 So he asked the priests, who told him that Christ would be 00:25:57.33\00:26:01.83 born a baby in Bethlehem. 00:26:01.83\00:26:04.30 So Herod told the wise men, after you find the child king, 00:26:04.30\00:26:09.53 come back to see me so I can also go and worship him. 00:26:09.53\00:26:13.60 But Herod was trying to deceive the wise men, 00:26:13.60\00:26:17.90 because he really meant to harm the child. 00:26:17.90\00:26:22.26 But you know what? 00:26:22.26\00:26:23.90 God always protects his own. 00:26:23.90\00:26:25.96 Whether in a city, the country, on an island, or 00:26:25.96\00:26:32.00 in a manger, God will always protect his own. 00:26:32.00\00:26:38.53 God spoke in a dream, told the wise men 00:26:38.53\00:26:42.53 not to return to Herod, but to go back 00:26:42.53\00:26:45.50 to their country. 00:26:45.50\00:26:46.30 So the wise men followed the star to Bethlehem until they 00:26:46.30\00:26:49.03 found where the baby Jesus lay, and when they got to 00:26:49.03\00:26:51.93 Jesus they worshipped him. 00:26:51.93\00:26:53.90 They offered him three gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh. 00:26:53.90\00:27:01.23 These gifts were very, very meaningful. 00:27:01.23\00:27:04.00 Gold was fitting for a king. 00:27:04.00\00:27:06.90 Frankincense was a resin from a balsam tree used 00:27:06.90\00:27:10.16 as a medicine. 00:27:10.16\00:27:11.93 Symbolically, this king, Jesus, would heal his people. 00:27:11.93\00:27:15.93 And then myrrh, an herb used in burials, was the most 00:27:15.93\00:27:20.93 unusual gift in that it pointed to the importance that 00:27:20.93\00:27:25.66 this king's death would mean later in life. 00:27:25.66\00:27:29.93 These were their gifts. 00:27:29.93\00:27:31.30 These were their presents. 00:27:31.30\00:27:32.56 [Choir] ? I believe this is Jesus! ? 00:27:32.56\00:27:38.96 ? Come and see! ? ? Come and see. ? 00:27:38.96\00:27:40.96 ? I believe this is Jesus! ? ? Come and see! ? 00:27:40.96\00:27:44.46 ?
