00:11 ♪ oh yes, he's worthy ♪ ♪ worthy of all... ♪ 00:18 ♪ all the Praise... ♪ ♪ Music ♪ 00:22 Now, dust of the ground, breath of life, 00:26 man became a living what? 00:27 Soul. 00:27 Body returns to what? 00:29 Dust. 00:31 The spirit or the breath returns to whom? 00:34 God. 00:34 But a lot of people try to equate that spirit 00:37 with the soul, saying that that soul at death 00:39 returns to God. 00:41 Pastor Byrd, how do we know that the spirit and the breath 00:44 from the nostrils are the same thing? 00:50 Because we let the Bible speak for itself. 00:53 We can't preach what we want to preach or teach 00:54 what we want to teach, we have to preach 00:56 thus sayeth the Lord. 00:57 So how do we know that the spirit and the breath 01:01 from the nostrils are one and the same? 01:03 I'm so glad you asked. 01:04 Take your Bible and go to the Book of Job. 01:06 Job 27:3. 01:20 Because when you leave here, you've told your friends, 01:25 you told your family, you told your coworkers, 01:27 I heard this preacher say that we don't go to heaven 01:29 straight at death, but we only go to heaven 01:31 at the second coming of Jesus when the dead of Christ 01:34 rise first and we which are alive remain are caught up 01:37 to meet the Lord in the air. 01:38 Now he's told me how it works. 01:40 I understand how it works. 01:41 Then you're going to be able to tell them. 01:43 Come on, say Amen. 01:43 Now Job 27:3, the Word of God says: "All the while 01:49 my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in 01:58 my nostrils." Body returns to what? 02:05 Dust. 02:07 The spirit, the breath which is in my nostrils 02:10 returns to God and the soul ceases to exist. 02:18 You can't have a soul because you don't have dust 02:20 and breath and so you can't have a soul. 02:24 Two things happen at death, the body returns to what? 02:27 Dust and the spirit returns to whom? 02:29 God. 02:30 God formed man of the dust of the ground, breathed in 02:32 his nostrils the breath of life, 02:34 man became a living soul. 02:35 When you don't have dust, when you don't have breath, 02:38 the soul ceases to exist. 02:41 God formed man of the dust and made a body. 02:44 He then combined his breath with this body and man 02:47 became a living what? 02:48 Soul. 02:49 The Bible definition for soul is body plus breath 02:55 equal living soul. 02:56 A living, breathing being is a soul. 02:59 The Bible in the text, friends of mine, is saying 03:02 that we are souls. 03:04 The truth of the matter is, we don't have souls, 03:07 but we are souls. 03:15 Let's rewind. 03:17 I've got to make sure you get it. 03:19 Dust of the what? 03:21 Ground. 03:22 Breath of what? 03:23 Life. 03:24 Man became a living what? 03:25 Soul. 03:26 When the individual dies the body returns to what? 03:29 Dust. 03:30 The spirit or the breath from the nostrils returns 03:33 to whom? 03:34 God. 03:36 And the soul ceases to what? Exist. 03:38 The reality is we are souls and that we don't have souls. 03:50 Who told you otherwise? 03:57 Okay, Pastor Byrd, I've got it now. 04:03 Well, do souls die? 04:05 Let's get some more Word. 04:06 Know what you believe, know why you believe it, 04:07 and know where it's found. 04:08 Go to Ezekiel. 04:09 What book did I say, everybody? 04:10 Old Testament, Ezekiel 18:4. 04:12 The Word of God says to us tonight: "Behold, all souls 04:28 are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul 04:34 of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, 04:39 it shall" what, everybody? 04:41 (Aud: Die.) Now, we've studied the Word of God, 04:44 that all of us have sinned, all of us have come short 04:47 of the glory of God. 04:49 If you say you have no sin in you, you're lying, 04:51 because all of us have sin and come short 04:55 of the glory of God. 04:56 There are no big I's, not little you's the ground 04:58 is level at the cross. 05:00 I have shared with everybody up in this place 05:02 that we all are an ex-something, so quit 05:05 looking down at somebody else, because you don't 05:08 live in a glass house. 05:09 I wish I had a witness in this place. 05:12 All of us have sinned. 05:14 All sinners need a savior. 05:16 I get excited because Jesus is my savior. 05:20 Jesus died to set me free. 05:24 The text says that the soul that sinneth, it shall 05:29 what? 05:30 Die. 05:31 I'm a soul. 05:32 I don't have a soul, we are souls. 05:35 Body plus breath equal living soul. 05:37 When a person dies, body returns to dust, 05:39 spirit returns to God, soul ceases to exist. 05:42 The soul that sins, it shall what? 05:46 Die. 05:52 Dead people are dead. 05:56 Let me try that one more time. 06:01 You know, I try to be flowery with this, but, you know. 06:04 Dead people, you all, are dead. 06:15 Dead people can't go back and haunt houses. 06:21 I'm preaching the Word of God. 06:30 Go with me to the Book of Job. 06:33 Job, Chapter 7. 06:34 Come on, let's get some Word. 06:35 Know what you believe, know why you believe it, 06:37 and know where it's found. 06:39 Job 7:9, the Word of God says to us tonight: 06:46 "As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away: so he that 06:52 goeth down to the grave shall come up no more. 06:56 He shall return no more to his house, neither shall 07:05 his place know him any more." My house is haunted. 07:09 Big Mama was talking to me. 07:14 You ate too much before you go to bed. 07:18 Go to sleep. 07:22 The dead do not come back and haunt your house. 07:30 Let's get some more Word. 07:31 Go to Job 14. 07:31 Do dead people know what their loved ones are earth 07:37 are doing? 07:41 Job 14:12: "So man lieth down, and riseth not: till 07:48 the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, 07:51 nor be raised out of their sleep." Go to verse 21: 07:54 "His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; 07:57 and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not 08:00 of them." Dead people don't know what you and I are 08:04 doing right now. 08:07 Because dead people are what, everybody? 08:09 Dead. 08:10 Dead people are what? 08:11 Dead. 08:12 Let's get some more Word. 08:13 Go to Book of Psalms, Psalms 6:5, the Word of God 08:24 says: "For in death there is no remembrance of thee: 08:29 in the grave who shall give thee thanks?" The dead do 08:33 not remember or give thanks because the dead are what, 08:36 everybody? 08:37 Dead. 08:39 Let's get some more Word. 08:40 Go to Psalms 115:17, the Word of God says to us 08:50 tonight: "The dead praise not the Lord, neither any 08:57 that go down into silence." 09:01 Oh, we had a good time at the revival. 09:03 We were blessing and praising the name of the 09:04 Lord and Mama and Daddy, they dead, they were 09:06 praising him too. 09:07 No they weren't. 09:10 "The dead praise not the Lord, neither any that go 09:12 down in silence." So my attitude is, you know 09:15 I'm going to praise God when I get to heaven, but I ain't 09:18 going to wait to praise him when I get to heaven. 09:20 I can't praise him when I'm dead. 09:22 So I might as well praise him while I'm alive. 09:24 Are you hearing what I'm saying? 09:26 So that's why the psalmist said, But we will 09:29 bless the Lord. 09:30 Verse 18: "From this time forth and for evermore. 09:34 Praise the Lord." The dead cannot praise the Lord. 09:40 Well, Pastor, can dead people think? 09:42 Psalms 146:4, can dead people think? 09:52 Psalms 146:4, if you have it, let me hear you say Amen. 09:59 The Word says: "His breath goeth forth, he returneth 10:03 to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish." 10:10 Well, they're thinking about me. 10:13 No, they're not. 10:17 Dead people are what, everybody? 10:19 Dead. 10:20 At death the body returns to what? 10:22 Dust. 10:23 The spirit returns to whom? 10:24 God. 10:25 The soul ceases to what? 10:26 Exist. 10:29 We are souls, we don't what? 10:32 Have souls. 10:32 The dead can't go back and haunt houses. 10:35 The dead do not know what their loved ones on earth 10:38 are doing. 10:39 The dead do not remember or give thanks. 10:41 The dead do not praise the Lord. 10:43 The dead cannot think because dead people 10:45 are dead. 10:50 Let's go to Isaiah 38:18-19. 10:59 The Word of God says in Isaiah 38:18-19: "For the 11:10 grave cannot praise thee, death can not celebrate 11:15 thee: they that go down into the pit cannot 11:19 hope for thy truth. 11:21 The living, the living, he shall praise thee, as I do 11:23 this day: the father to the children shall make known 11:27 thy truth." Friends of mine, the dead, unlike you and me, 11:33 they cannot learn truth. 11:35 They cannot learn what you and I are learning 11:37 from the Word of God. 11:39 Praise God that we are alive. 11:41 Do I have a witness in this place? 11:44 But dead people are dead. 11:48 Who told you Big Mama was looking down at you? 11:51 Who told you PawPaw was talking to you? 11:54 Who told you your house was haunted? 11:57 That is not true. 11:58 The Word of God says that when an individual dies, 12:02 their body returns to dust, the spirit returns to God, 12:05 the soul ceases to exist, because dead people are 12:10 dead people. 12:12 Let me show you how this works together. 12:15 At Jesus' second coming there are going to be how 12:17 many groups of people? 12:18 Four primary groups of people. 12:19 Remember, we studied from the Word of God that 12:21 there will primarily be two resurrections. 12:23 There will be a resurrection of the righteous 12:25 that happens at the second coming, then we 12:27 have one thousand years, or the millennium, and at 12:29 the end of the millennium there'll be a resurrection 12:32 of the wicked. 12:32 At Jesus' second coming, the Bible is clear that 12:34 the righteous dead rise what? 12:36 First. 12:37 The righteous living are caught up to meet the Lord 12:39 in the what? 12:40 Air. 12:41 The wicked living die at the brightness of Jesus' 12:42 what? 12:44 (Aud: Coming.) The wicked dead remain what? 12:46 Dead. 12:47 One thousand years they're dead, until the end of the 12:50 one thousand years and then the resurrection 12:52 of the wicked. 12:53 At his first coming Jesus came to save his people. 12:57 At his second coming Jesus is coming to get his people. 13:00 At his third coming Jesus is coming back with his people. 13:03 But Satan is a liar. 13:08 He's a bold-faced liar. 13:10 He wants people to believe that the dead are alive and 13:13 can be contacted. 13:15 The living know that they shall die, but the dead 13:18 know not anything. 13:19 Let's me tell you all something. 13:21 Don't be caught up in all this spiritualism and 13:24 superstitious foolishness. 13:25 You better leave voodoo, these Ouija boards and all 13:31 these crazy spirits alone. 13:34 That's why I don't ask everybody to pray for me. 13:36 Everybody can't lay hands on me, because if you are 13:39 not of the spirit of God, you need to get from around me. 13:43 I wish I had a witness in this place. 13:46 Isaiah 8:20 is clear to the law and to the testimony. 13:50 If they speak not according to this Word, it is because 13:54 there is no life in them. 13:56 Let me tell you something, Satan knows the Bible 13:58 better than you. 13:59 Satan can quote scripture better than you. 14:03 He can preach better than you. 14:05 He can sing better than you. 14:08 He can teach better than you. 14:09 If Satan tempted Jesus you better know he will 14:12 sure enough tempt you. 14:14 Satan will transform himself into an angel of light. 14:17 Satan is not in a red suit. 14:20 Satan doesn't have horns. 14:24 Satan doesn't have a tail or a pitchfork. 14:28 Let me tell you something: Satan will transform himself 14:31 into an angel of light. 14:33 That's why you better know the Word of God for yourself. 14:37 You better know what you believe, know why 14:40 you believe it, where it's found. 14:43 Satan will make himself appear as a minister. 14:46 That's why I told you, everything I preach and teach 14:48 from this pulpit, you better check it out for yourself 14:50 from the Word of God. 14:52 I told you the other night, you didn't come into this 14:54 church, we'll give you a little water, but we don't 14:56 give you Jim Jones' juice. 15:00 You read and study the Word of God for yourself. 15:04 Let me tell you something, Satan will deceive you 15:06 on the Word. 15:08 He'll deceive you on life. 15:09 He'll deceive you on death. 15:11 He'll deceive you on resurrection power, making 15:14 you think he has the power to give life and to 15:16 resurrect, but Satan can't resurrect anybody. 15:19 Satan cannot give life. 15:20 Only Jesus can give life. 15:23 Jesus said, I am the way, the truth and the life. 15:27 Understand, Satan thought he had defeated Jesus 15:30 on the cross. 15:31 He thought Jesus was down for the count. 15:33 Jesus died on Good Friday, he lay resting 15:36 in the grave according to the commandment of the 15:38 seventh day, but on the third appointed day he got up 15:42 with all power in his hands. 15:43 Power over death, hell and the grave, 15:48 and because he lives I live. 15:50 Because he got up, one day the dead in Christ are going 15:56 to get up. 15:58 I serve a risen Savior. 16:00 He's in the world today. 16:01 I know that he is living, whatever men may say. 16:05 I see his hand of mercy, I hear his voice of cheer 16:10 and just the time I need him, he's always near. 16:17 Does anybody know, just in the nick of time, I said, 16:21 just in the nick of time Jesus is always there, 16:25 because one day, I'll show you a mystery, that one day 16:30 we shall not all sleep. 16:31 One day we're going to be changed. 16:35 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye. 16:39 That one day this mortal will put on immortality. 16:42 This corruptible will put on incorruption. 16:45 And death will be swallowed up in victory. 16:48 Victory is mine, victory is mine, 16:51 victory today is I told Satan, get thee behind. 16:58 Victory I have. 17:01 Victory today is mine. 17:02 When we all get to heaven, what a day of rejoicing 17:06 that's going to be. 17:07 When we all see Jesus, we're going to sing 17:12 and shout. 17:14 The, victory. 17:15 Lord, you're worthy of all the praise. 17:17 Lord, you're worthy of all the glory. 17:19 God, you're worthy of all the honor. 17:21 Hallelujah. 17:23 One day death is going to be dead. 17:34 You know, I want to see the look upon his face. 17:43 There to sing forever f his saving grace. 17:48 On the streets of glory I plan to lift my voice. 17:51 Cares are all passed, home at last, ever to rejoice. 17:53 Don't let the devil punk you. 17:54 Don't let the devil deceive you. 18:06 If the devil will deceive you on Jesus' coming, 18:09 making somebody think there's going to be 18:12 a secret rapture, don't you know he'll deceive you 18:14 on death. 18:16 (piano music) Think about it, y'all. 18:22 The devil deceived one-third of the angels. 18:25 The devil deceived Adam and Eve in the Garden. 18:30 (piano playing softly in background) 18:32 Don't you know the devil will try to deceive 18:35 you and you? 18:37 Oh, but, Pastor Byrd, it makes sense now. 18:41 It makes sense now why the dead don't 18:44 go straight to heaven because now we fully understand 18:46 the whole context. 18:47 We understand the context now that at Jesus' second 18:50 coming we understand now why the dead in Christ 18:52 at that time will rise. 18:53 We now understand why when Jesus comes the second 18:54 time, the righteous living will be caught up to meet 18:55 the Lord in the air. 18:55 We understand that now, because at death the body 18:56 returns to what? 18:57 Dust. 18:58 The spirit returns to whom? 19:00 God. 19:02 And the soul ceases to exist. 19:06 Now, I don't know what anyone else has told you, 19:15 but I know what the Lord has told us tonight. 19:29 Now, tonight before you came here, some of you may 19:32 not have known this. 19:34 But others who have come tonight, you may have known 19:36 that at death we don't go to heaven, but now, from 19:41 the Word of God you can tell somebody why. 19:48 Know what you believe, know why you believe it, 19:55 and know where it's found in the Word of God. 20:06 Now, everybody's not going to preach this. 20:15 Everybody's not going to teach this. 20:19 Because this is not popular. 20:23 See, we think it's comforting when a family member 20:29 or loved one dies and they roll them 20:31 in the church and put them up here 20:33 and people stand up and they say, well, they're 20:35 in a better place, we think that's comforting. 20:40 But really, if you think about it, it's not comforting. 20:44 Why would a dead relative want to be in heaven 20:47 looking down on you and me and all the mess and confusion 20:50 we have to go through each and every day. 20:55 Why would that be better for them? 21:03 That's why the Apostle Paul said in 1 Thessalonians 4:18: 21:07 "Comfort one another with these words." 21:12 When Jesus comes there's going to be a great reunion 21:22 with Christ, and when Jesus comes there's going to be a 21:28 great reunion with our loved ones. 21:34 Now, there are some people that know me and know my 21:36 wife and they know our story and now you understand 21:39 a little better why I'm so passionate about this. 21:45 Now you understand a little better why I'm so tough on this 21:51 and why I want to expose Satan for who he really is. 21:55 You see, for those that don't me, I'm going 21:58 to get personal now. 21:59 We had a four-and-a-half month-old daughter. 22:02 She would be 13 next month, May 11th. 22:10 We were in this terrible car accident. 22:15 When you have a four-and-a-half month-old 22:18 baby girl and I want to say she looked like me. 22:21 Come on, say Amen. 22:25 And you look at your little baby girl and she had 22:27 five fingers on her left hand, five fingers on her right hand, 22:31 two eyes, two noses and her heart is beating, 22:33 10 toes. 22:36 Did I say two noses? 22:36 Two nostrils, you all know what I mean. 22:38 (Laughter.) I'm just checking to see if you're all listening. 22:41 Come on, say Amen. 22:45 You're just thankful to God that you have a healthy 22:48 child. 22:50 We were in that terrible car accident and we lost 22:55 our daughter. 22:59 Parents aren't supposed to bury their children. 23:03 Children are supposed to bury their parents. 23:09 You all, I was mad. 23:12 God, how could you allow this to happen to me and my 23:14 wife? 23:15 How could you allow this to happen to us? 23:17 Lord, I'm a good guy. 23:26 Whenever I teach this lesson, when I preach this 23:30 sermon, I get excited because there is something 23:34 that just gets up in me. 23:37 There's something that's in me that I can't explain. 23:45 There's something within me that banishes all of my 23:49 pain and my hurt, because when I preach this sermon 23:54 I'm reminded that, yes, when an individual dies 23:57 their body returns to dust, their spirit returns to God 23:59 and their soul ceases to exist. 24:02 But when I preach this sermon, I'm reminded that 24:04 one day the trumpet is going to sound and I'm 24:09 reminded that the dead in Christ, which includes my 24:14 four-and-a-half month-old baby girl, they're going to 24:19 rise first. 24:21 And then I'm reminded that the rest of us who are 24:24 alive and remain are going to be caught up to meet the 24:29 Lord in the air. 24:30 And so shall we ever be with the Lord. 24:38 And I'm so glad troubles don't last always. 24:44 I'm so glad that weeping may endure for a night but 24:46 joy comes in the morning time. 24:49 I'm so glad that after the rain the sun is going to 24:55 shine again. 24:57 Serving the Lord is going to pay off after awhile. 25:08 For me, 'tis so sweet, to trust in Jesus, just to 25:19 take him at his word, just to rest upon his promise, 25:22 just to know that tonight for that man, that woman, 25:25 that boy, that girl, you've lost a family member, 25:27 you've lost a loved one, they're just sleeping right 25:29 now. 25:31 But one day the trumpet is going to sound. 25:34 Time is going to be no more and the dead are going to 25:38 start rising up like popcorn. 25:41 They won't need an alarm clock. 25:43 The alarm clock will be the voice of Jesus, the trump 25:45 of God, and they'll just start popping up all saying 25:49 hallelujah. 25:55 So, hold on just a little while longer. 26:01 He's coming very soon. 26:08 Death is going to be dead. 26:10 Put your hands together and give God some praise. 26:14 Hallelujah. 26:15 It's an age-old question. 26:16 What happens after we die? 26:17 The Breath of Life gift offer this week is 26:20 "What the Bible Says About Death."
