And Jesus answering 00:04:50.06\00:04:57.06 said unto him, 'Simon, I have somewhat to say 00:04:57.06\00:04:58.26 unto thee.' And he saith , 'Master, say all.' "'There was 00:04:58.26\00:05:02.03 a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owned 00:05:02.03\00:05:04.90 five hundred pence, and the other fifty. 00:05:04.90\00:05:06.90 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly 00:05:06.90\00:05:08.83 forgave them both. 00:05:08.83\00:05:10.03 Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?' 00:05:10.03\00:05:16.26 Simon answered and said, 'I suppose that he, to whom 00:05:16.26\00:05:17.90 he forgave most.' And he said unto him, 'Thou has rightly 00:05:17.90\00:05:21.53 judged.' And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, 00:05:21.53\00:05:26.10 'Seest thou this woman? 00:05:26.10\00:05:30.60 I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my 00:05:30.60\00:05:34.33 feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, 00:05:34.33\00:05:38.96 and wiped them with the hairs of her head. 00:05:38.96\00:05:42.90 Thou gavest me no kiss: But this woman since the time 00:05:42.90\00:05:46.66 I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet. 00:05:46.66\00:05:51.06 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman 00:05:51.06\00:05:54.26 hath anointed my feet with ointment. 00:05:54.26\00:06:00.33 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are 00:06:00.33\00:06:03.43 forgiven; for she loves much: but to whom little is forgiven, 00:06:03.43\00:06:06.13 the same loveth little.' And he said unto her, 00:06:06.13\00:06:08.53 'Thy sins are forgiven.' "And they that sat at meat 00:06:08.53\00:06:14.43 with him began to say within themselves, 'Who is this that 00:06:14.43\00:06:17.90 foregiveth sins also?' And he said to the woman, 00:06:17.90\00:06:23.50 'Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.'" 00:06:23.50\00:06:33.50 Do me a favor. 00:06:33.50\00:06:34.33 Turn to your neighbor and say, "Neighbor, you don't know the 00:06:34.33\00:06:37.23 cost of my praise." 00:06:37.23\00:06:38.96 Father God, we thank you. 00:06:38.96\00:06:41.53 We praise you. 00:06:41.53\00:06:43.80 Now, God, we ask that you would come in this place. 00:06:43.80\00:06:48.03 May your Holy Ghost breathe through these aisles 00:06:48.03\00:06:49.93 this evening. 00:06:49.93\00:06:51.13 And, God, we'll be careful to give you all the praise beyond 00:06:51.13\00:06:53.50 the glory, hide me behind your cross. 00:06:53.50\00:06:55.60 May your anointing make the difference, we pray. 00:06:55.60\00:06:59.00 Forgive us for our sins, give me clarity of thought, 00:06:59.00\00:07:01.80 articulation of word, and thy people receptivity of heart. 00:07:01.80\00:07:05.56 It is in Jesus' name we pray. 00:07:05.56\00:07:08.33 Let everyone say Amen. 00:07:08.33\00:07:10.46 And Amen. 00:07:10.46\00:07:12.23 You don't know the cost of my praise. 00:07:12.23\00:07:16.86 I want to begin this message by saying that this evening, 00:07:16.86\00:07:24.00 in many ways, I'm a conflicted Christian. 00:07:24.00\00:07:28.00 What do you mean, conflicted, Pastor Byrd? 00:07:28.00\00:07:31.23 Well, there's a conflict in my soul torn between religion 00:07:31.23\00:07:41.83 and relationship. 00:07:41.83\00:07:43.93 Religion is embodied in the things that we are taught. 00:07:43.93\00:07:46.70 The ideas and philosophies that are conveyed to us 00:07:46.70\00:07:50.93 that form religiosity. 00:07:50.93\00:07:52.96 But somewhere in the midst of embracing religion it is God's 00:07:52.96\00:07:58.23 divine will that we ultimately evolve into relationship. 00:07:58.23\00:08:03.93 For religion without relationship ends up with folk 00:08:03.93\00:08:08.53 worrying about what you have on, where you live, and who 00:08:08.53\00:08:13.03 you know instead of you getting to know Jesus. 00:08:13.03\00:08:17.06 Religion without relationship leads into cults, cynicism and 00:08:17.06\00:08:23.66 self-righteousness. 00:08:23.66\00:08:25.50 Religion without relationship ends up with war 00:08:25.50\00:08:31.63 in the Middle East. 00:08:31.63\00:08:35.33 Religion without relationship ends up with the KKK. 00:08:35.33\00:08:37.96 Religion without relationship ends up in terrorism and 00:08:37.96\00:08:41.13 planes flying into buildings like they did on 9/11. 00:08:41.13\00:08:48.30 Religion without relationship ends up with bigotry and pride, 00:08:48.30\00:08:52.30 self-absorption and strife. 00:08:52.30\00:08:53.13 Religion without relationship has killed more people on this 00:08:53.13\00:08:58.36 planet than anything else in the world where people have a 00:08:58.36\00:09:03.90 form of godliness but they deny the power thereof. 00:09:03.90\00:09:06.80 Tonight, I'm sick and tired of religion without relationship. 00:09:06.80\00:09:13.80 Like a heat-sensored missile, I want to see it explode. 00:09:13.80\00:09:18.33 I want to see it destroyed. 00:09:18.33\00:09:20.20 I want to seek it out and kill it, 00:09:20.20\00:09:23.03 even if it's in me. 00:09:23.03\00:09:25.66 There's a constant slipping away of what I've been taught 00:09:25.66\00:09:29.90 versus what has been revealed. 00:09:29.90\00:09:33.00 And so I should tell you as a pastor, as a preacher, 00:09:33.00\00:09:37.16 I should tell you that I've mastered it and I understand 00:09:37.16\00:09:40.76 it and I've got it all together and I'm sure, 00:09:40.76\00:09:44.23 and I have everything, but this evening 00:09:44.23\00:09:47.23 I'm conflicted. 00:09:47.23\00:09:49.83 There's a constant peeling away of the veneer 00:09:49.83\00:09:53.50 of the religion that I've been taught, and a seeking, 00:09:53.50\00:09:56.50 perpetual, ongoing effort to find the truth, the kernel of 00:09:56.50\00:09:59.83 truth behind the hard walls of religion. 00:09:59.83\00:10:02.10 Somewhere in the hybrid seed with it's shiny exterior 00:10:02.10\00:10:05.30 there's life in the core, but there's no life 00:10:05.30\00:10:09.80 in the seed itself. 00:10:09.80\00:10:10.90 Life is in the core inside the seed. 00:10:10.90\00:10:15.76 That's why we bury the seed in the ground, so that the seed 00:10:15.76\00:10:19.60 will be conflicted enough that the outer encasement might die 00:10:19.60\00:10:23.06 and that the inner life might be brought forth. 00:10:23.06\00:10:26.56 And so, we are constantly dying as believers, not just 00:10:26.56\00:10:31.10 to sin, not just to our own weaknesses, but we are dying 00:10:31.10\00:10:36.30 out to the hard veneer of what we've been taught, 00:10:36.30\00:10:39.80 to find the life beneath of what really matters. 00:10:39.80\00:10:43.50 Out of all we've been taught, where is the life in it? 00:10:43.50\00:10:47.86 And so it is that Jesus, my Lord, my Savior, my Prophet, 00:10:47.86\00:10:56.43 my Priest, my King, has come into the house of a Pharisee. 00:10:56.43\00:11:04.70 Now, the Pharisee had religion. 00:11:04.70\00:11:08.30 There's no question about that. 00:11:08.30\00:11:11.03 He had resources. 00:11:11.03\00:11:12.73 He could invite Jesus to dinner. 00:11:12.73\00:11:15.20 He understood protocol. 00:11:15.20\00:11:16.73 He understood appropriateness. 00:11:16.73\00:11:18.86 This was the house of a Pharisee. 00:11:18.86\00:11:22.60 Pharisees spent their lives being religious. 00:11:22.60\00:11:28.03 And before you are too critical of them, all of us, 00:11:28.03\00:11:31.53 too, for varying degrees, we, too, are religious. 00:11:31.53\00:11:34.16 Let me tell you this, and I've learned it in my Christian 00:11:34.16\00:11:37.06 experience, I'm a pastor's kid, a PK, and then I've been 00:11:37.06\00:11:39.76 pastoring 17 years, and I've learned in my experience, 00:11:39.76\00:11:43.93 there is nothing as dangerous as turning yourself over to a 00:11:43.93\00:11:48.26 room full of church folk. 00:11:48.26\00:11:54.90 We have rules for which we have no scriptures. 00:11:54.90\00:11:59.13 We have all kinds of ideas and concepts of what is 00:11:59.13\00:12:03.03 appropriate and inappropriate. 00:12:03.03\00:12:05.40 We will kill people over things that we later 00:12:05.40\00:12:09.26 find out are not necessary. 00:12:09.26\00:12:11.13 Church folk can be dangerous and even when we have 00:12:11.13\00:12:15.86 scriptures, we don't search them for appropriateness. 00:12:15.86\00:12:19.96 Many times we just hurl them out after the fashion of our 00:12:19.96\00:12:23.96 fathers without questioning the possibility that our 00:12:23.96\00:12:27.26 fathers could have been wrong. 00:12:27.26\00:12:29.43 And so we kill our sons, our future, trying to be loyal to 00:12:29.43\00:12:33.40 our fathers, our past, and our future is desecrated by our 00:12:33.40\00:12:36.80 commitment to our history because we love our history 00:12:36.80\00:12:40.00 more than we seek our destiny. 00:12:40.00\00:12:41.80 Tonight I'm conflicted. 00:12:41.80\00:12:47.20 Are you hearing what I'm saying? 00:12:47.20\00:12:49.40 What good is it if you can afford to bring Jesus into 00:12:49.40\00:12:52.56 your house when your religion stops you from appreciating 00:12:52.56\00:12:57.30 the Jesus you have access to? 00:12:57.30\00:12:59.66 Sure, Simon did bring Jesus into his house, but he didn't 00:12:59.66\00:13:07.06 know what to do with Jesus once Jesus was in his house. 00:13:07.06\00:13:12.70 Maybe he is too blessed to be appreciating this. 00:13:12.70\00:13:17.10 Maybe he feels that God should appreciate the fact that he 00:13:17.10\00:13:20.40 took out time for him, because that's wrong. 00:13:20.40\00:13:24.53 Most of us are so important that if we give God a sabbath, 00:13:24.53\00:13:28.60 God forbid that we should come out on a Wednesday night, 00:13:28.60\00:13:31.86 because we feel all of heaven should stand at attention 00:13:31.86\00:13:36.30 because you made time for God. 00:13:36.30\00:13:39.20 Who, incidentally, put breath in your body, woke you up this 00:13:39.20\00:13:43.93 morning, started you on your way, put food on your table, 00:13:43.93\00:13:48.36 makes your kneecaps operate and makes your heart beat even 00:13:48.36\00:13:53.10 while you're still asleep. 00:13:53.10\00:13:56.26 But yet you give God what you want to, when you want, how 00:13:56.26\00:14:00.80 you want to, if you want to, because some of us are more 00:14:00.80\00:14:04.10 important in our minds than God himself. 00:14:04.10\00:14:07.53 So it is, into this regal, sanctimonious, righteous, 00:14:07.53\00:14:13.63 pious, holy environment comes a lady of the night. 00:14:13.63\00:14:22.53 Now, a Pharisee--follow me carefully in this story--a 00:14:22.53\00:14:26.66 Pharisee has spent all of his life steeped in the legality 00:14:26.66\00:14:30.70 of the law's appropriateness, Feast of Wheat, Feast of 00:14:30.70\00:14:33.73 Tabernacles, Feast of Unleavened Bread, they know 00:14:33.73\00:14:36.16 all the ceremonies, all the cleansings, all the washings. 00:14:36.16\00:14:39.46 They approach God, but they see God through the lens 00:14:39.46\00:14:43.10 of legalism. 00:14:43.10\00:14:44.20 Because all of us see God through something, 00:14:44.20\00:14:47.50 be it communion, be it baptism, creeds, concepts, preachers, 00:14:47.50\00:14:50.66 denominations. 00:14:50.66\00:14:51.70 We all see God through the lens of something. 00:14:51.70\00:14:56.26 And they saw God through the lens of legalism, because that 00:14:56.26\00:15:00.86 is, in fact, what they had been taught. 00:15:00.86\00:15:03.70 And so, they approach their relationship with God 00:15:03.70\00:15:06.63 on the basis of their commitment to religion, 00:15:06.63\00:15:09.33 not for their love for him. 00:15:09.33\00:15:10.76 They thought that the more you kept the law, 00:15:10.76\00:15:13.83 the closer you were to God. 00:15:13.83\00:15:15.36 The Pharisees were disciplined, they were trained, 00:15:15.36\00:15:20.16 they were committed. 00:15:20.16\00:15:21.93 They were taught to discipline themselves. 00:15:21.93\00:15:24.93 The Pharisees were moral people. 00:15:24.93\00:15:28.20 They were clean people. 00:15:28.20\00:15:29.60 They didn't touch certain things. 00:15:29.60\00:15:32.56 They didn't eat certain things. 00:15:32.56\00:15:36.63 They didn't go to certain places. 00:15:36.63\00:15:39.03 They kept the sabbath holy. 00:15:39.03\00:15:39.83 They kept the law. 00:15:39.83\00:15:41.33 They were tedious, and don't get it twisted, 00:15:41.33\00:15:43.80 there's nothing wrong with this when it's motivated 00:15:43.80\00:15:46.73 by love. 00:15:46.73\00:15:48.23 Because, after all, Jesus said, if you love me, keep my 00:15:48.23\00:15:51.16 commandments. 00:15:51.16\00:15:52.86 If we love God like we say we love God, we're supposed 00:15:52.86\00:15:55.90 to keep God's laws. 00:15:55.90\00:15:56.86 Do I have a witness in this place? 00:15:56.86\00:15:59.43 But in a world where if it feels good, do it, don't act 00:15:59.43\00:16:05.90 like you can do any and everything you want to, when 00:16:05.90\00:16:10.73 you want to, where you want to, how you want to and 00:16:10.73\00:16:13.26 then say you love Jesus. 00:16:13.26\00:16:15.23 Your keeping of God's laws will testify to who you love. 00:16:15.23\00:16:20.23 I'm going to kill somebody, but I love God. 00:16:20.23\00:16:23.60 I'm going to sleep with somebody who's not my wife, 00:16:23.60\00:16:27.40 who's not my husband, but I love God. 00:16:27.40\00:16:30.46 No, you don't love God, you love yourself. 00:16:30.46\00:16:33.86 Love law is the religion; love is the relationship. 00:16:33.86\00:16:38.26 You have to have both and not either or. 00:16:38.26\00:16:42.43 Love and law. 00:16:42.43\00:16:43.86 Faith and works. 00:16:43.86\00:16:45.60 Religion and relationship. 00:16:45.60\00:16:48.10 Our motivation for keeping God's laws should be a love 00:16:48.10\00:16:51.26 relationship not solely religion, and this, my 00:16:51.26\00:16:55.00 friends, is where the Pharisees had it all wrong. 00:16:55.00\00:16:58.73 The Bible says, this man was a Pharisee and it was 00:16:58.73\00:17:03.40 appropriate that if Jesus was a man of God, it is 00:17:03.40\00:17:08.36 appropriate that Jesus should be seen with a Pharisee 00:17:08.36\00:17:12.00 in his house. 00:17:12.00\00:17:13.73 But not with a lady of the night. 00:17:13.73\00:17:18.16 But what I want to know is this, when I study the text, 00:17:18.16\00:17:21.20 if the Pharisee if supposed to be so holy and if she's a 00:17:21.20\00:17:26.33 prostitute, how did this woman get in the house anyway? 00:17:26.33\00:17:34.50 Why is she even knocking on the door? 00:17:34.50\00:17:38.26 What's she doing in this house? 00:17:38.26\00:17:41.80 She's not holy, she's not righteous, she's not pure, 00:17:41.80\00:17:47.60 she's been around the block, she's messed up so bad that 00:17:47.60\00:17:52.13 even church folk knew who she was and what she was about. 00:17:52.13\00:17:56.20 People knew her by what she did and not by her name. 00:17:56.20\00:18:01.33 Where and what did she leave to come there 00:18:01.33\00:18:06.60 in the first place? 00:18:06.60\00:18:09.20 How dare she mess up our nice, clean, holy church with her 00:18:09.20\00:18:14.43 mess, her ankle bracelets, her rings, her tattoos, her urban, 00:18:14.43\00:18:22.13 seductive disposition? 00:18:22.13\00:18:25.30 Who is she to walk up in our church looking like that? 00:18:25.30\00:18:31.30 How dare she set foot in our church? 00:18:31.30\00:18:37.03 See, I have learned, some people like the idea of 00:18:37.03\00:18:40.40 evangelism, they like the concept of evangelism, they 00:18:40.40\00:18:44.70 like to give money to support evangelism, send money to 00:18:44.70\00:18:48.40 foreign missions to help people who are in trouble, but 00:18:48.40\00:18:51.60 don't mess up our nice, pretty church 00:18:51.60\00:18:54.73 with your peculiar ways. 00:18:54.73\00:18:58.46 And that's just like some church folk, they want to keep 00:18:58.46\00:19:01.46 the people out who need church the most. 00:19:01.46\00:19:07.46 And then, she's a woman. 00:19:07.46\00:19:09.86 Most of the time in the Bible women aren't even listed 00:19:09.86\00:19:13.33 in the genealogy. 00:19:13.33\00:19:15.53 She wasn't significant. 00:19:15.53\00:19:17.26 She's not important. 00:19:17.26\00:19:18.86 She couldn't vote. 00:19:18.86\00:19:20.46 She couldn't make decisions. 00:19:20.46\00:19:22.00 She couldn't lead. 00:19:22.00\00:19:23.40 Why is this woman breaking in among all these important men? 00:19:23.40\00:19:28.70 And not only is she a woman, considered a second-class 00:19:28.70\00:19:32.56 citizen, property of a man, she's not even a good woman. 00:19:32.56\00:19:38.46 She's a prostitute. 00:19:38.46\00:19:40.90 But this woman comes into this atmosphere against all odds. 00:19:40.90\00:19:46.60 I've learned that sometimes it's hard to get to God 00:19:46.60\00:19:50.50 because of his people. 00:19:50.50\00:19:54.06 One day I told the Lord, Lord, I love you but it's your kids 00:19:54.06\00:19:57.93 that get on my nerves sometimes. 00:19:57.93\00:20:00.10 Do I have a witness in this place? 00:20:00.10\00:20:02.26 Have you ever loved somebody but you couldn't 00:20:02.26\00:20:05.00 stand their children? 00:20:05.00\00:20:06.80 Their kids were wild, rude, disrespectful, throwing stuff 00:20:06.80\00:20:10.26 in the air, drawing pictures on the wall, screaming, and 00:20:10.26\00:20:13.76 you're trying to have a conversation and you're saying 00:20:13.76\00:20:16.00 to yourself, if I could just have them for one weekend. 00:20:16.00\00:20:21.20 When I get through with you your momma wouldn't 00:20:21.20\00:20:23.66 know who you are. 00:20:23.66\00:20:27.06 The woman comes up behind Jesus. 00:20:27.06\00:20:31.30 She knows according to the customs of the time, she knows 00:20:31.30\00:20:34.93 that according to the culture of the day she shouldn't 00:20:34.93\00:20:37.76 be in the room. 00:20:37.76\00:20:39.06 She knows that according to the standards of absolute 00:20:39.06\00:20:41.66 scripture she shouldn't be in the room. 00:20:41.66\00:20:43.90 A prostitute touching a priest. 00:20:43.90\00:20:46.60 When I was a little boy in grade school they used to give 00:20:46.60\00:20:51.56 us pictures in school and I remember one being a picture 00:20:51.56\00:20:54.20 of a living room and in the living room there was a couch, 00:20:54.20\00:20:58.40 a sofa, a chair, an end table, and then a refrigerator. 00:20:58.40\00:21:02.73 And the teacher would then say, what's wrong 00:21:02.73\00:21:05.60 with this picture? 00:21:05.60\00:21:08.06 And they wanted to see if your cognitive skills were 00:21:08.06\00:21:11.23 bright enough to discern appropriateness and if you 00:21:11.23\00:21:14.06 had reasonable skills you would circle the refrigerator 00:21:14.06\00:21:16.90 to say that this does not go with that. 00:21:16.90\00:21:22.46 What's wrong with this picture? 00:21:22.46\00:21:25.46 It's not Simon, he's a Pharisee. 00:21:25.46\00:21:30.13 It's not Jesus, he's preacher, prophet and priest. 00:21:30.13\00:21:36.93 But let's just circle the prostitute. 00:21:36.93\00:21:41.46 She doesn't have any business in here, 00:21:41.46\00:21:45.10 but she's here anyway. 00:21:45.10\00:21:48.90 She cries. 00:21:48.90\00:21:49.86 I--I--I--know that by the standards of your religion 00:21:49.86\00:21:52.50 I shouldn't even be in here. 00:21:52.50\00:21:55.13 But she's in here anyway. 00:21:55.13\00:21:58.86 Tears are falling down her cheeks on him. 00:21:58.86\00:22:03.90 She does not seek Jesus' face. 00:22:03.90\00:22:06.90 He doesn't even have to look at her and she doesn't try to 00:22:06.90\00:22:09.70 get his favor, she doesn't want to get his face, she 00:22:09.70\00:22:12.66 doesn't seek his hand, she didn't come 00:22:12.66\00:22:15.36 for a blessing plan. 00:22:15.36\00:22:17.80 Five ways to get a car, three ways to get out of debt, 00:22:17.80\00:22:22.76 10 ways to get a husband. 00:22:22.76\00:22:27.40 She doesn't want a blessing, she's just glad to be 00:22:27.40\00:22:31.93 in the picture. 00:22:31.93\00:22:34.73 She has no right to be in the picture and so she falls down 00:22:34.73\00:22:38.66 at his feet and Jesus feels the warm, salty sensation as 00:22:38.66\00:22:43.03 her tear ducts give way to her emotional compassion, and as 00:22:43.03\00:22:47.46 the water breaks in her soul, the overflow happens in her 00:22:47.46\00:22:51.53 eyes and drop by drop, running down her face, cascading on 00:22:51.53\00:22:56.93 his face, his feet, are the tears of a sinner's praise. 00:22:56.93\00:23:03.26 And she begins to praise him in a conflicted atmosphere. 00:23:03.26\00:23:08.26 See, I've learned it's easy to praise God when 00:23:08.26\00:23:12.00 the whole room is praising God. 00:23:12.00\00:23:14.36 It's easy to praise God when folk are smiling, happy 00:23:14.36\00:23:18.40 and excited about Jesus. 00:23:18.40\00:23:20.30 It's even easy to clap; even folk who have no rhythm can 00:23:20.30\00:23:24.26 clap when everybody else is clapping. 00:23:24.26\00:23:27.23 But, friends of mine, it's hard to praise God in a room 00:23:27.23\00:23:30.53 where you're hated. 00:23:30.53\00:23:33.56 It's hard to praise God in a room where you're 00:23:33.56\00:23:36.63 being talked about. 00:23:36.63\00:23:39.10 It's hard to praise God in an environment where you're 00:23:39.10\00:23:42.26 being criticized. 00:23:42.26\00:23:43.23 You don't have to be a spirit-filled believer to be 00:23:43.23\00:23:45.16 able to sense when somebody hates you. 00:23:45.16\00:23:49.06 People can be in a group and you walk up to them and all of 00:23:49.06\00:23:53.46 a sudden they stop talking. 00:23:53.46\00:23:55.80 Anybody know what I'm talking about? 00:23:55.80\00:23:59.53 You don't have to be born again to be able to sense 00:23:59.53\00:24:02.93 when somebody doesn't like you. 00:24:02.93\00:24:03.83 Have you ever walked in a room and you can feel all the 00:24:03.83\00:24:06.43 malice, the strife, the hatefulness toward you?
