that Jesus healed lepers

grace hit the tomb of Lazarus

raise Lazarus from the dead
but that is not why Jesus came.

The woman with the issue
of blood touched the hem of

Jesus' garment and immediately
her issue was stopped

delivered but that's not why

free from the distractions

and raising the dead

The Bible says that he has
set his face to go to Jerusalem.

This is not his
first time at Jerusalem

but this is the first time
he comes to Jerusalem with his

face set toward death and the
understanding that he must die

that we might live.

We have come to the
final stage of Jesus' journey.

There has been the time
of withdrawal in Caesarea

Philippi in the far north.

There has been the time
that Jesus the Christ spent

in Galilee.

There has been the time that
he spent in the hills of Judea

but that is all over now.

He has completed his
assignment to Jericho and now

he has set his face
up to go to Jerusalem.

over the city of Jerusalem

Jerusalem was set up under
the control of the Roman Empire

Jesus has to set his face

No longer bothered by
the politics of the day

Jesus now focuses on
Jerusalem without distraction

for it was to be the
place where destiny was supposed

to collide with
purpose and Christ himself

was to be crucified.

Can you today imagine the
weight of responsibility as

Jesus made his way to Calvary.

Jesus is walking with men
who don't fully understand him.

They love him but they
don't understand him because

I've learned
sometimes people can love you

but they make your
life more difficult.

Peter in his love for
Jesus takes out his sword

the Bible says cuts off a Roman

soldier's ear.

To cut off the ear of a
Roman soldier would mean

and should mean death.

It meant death by
execution not by crucifixion

but Jesus could not afford
to have his purpose aborted

by the hot-headed
anger of a jealous disciple

to happen in his life.

As he begins to go toward
Jerusalem there is a cry of

There's a great deal
of excitement a great

deal of enthusiasm.

And in the process of
them being excited about him

the Bible says that
they begin to gather

palms from branches.
00:11:10.20\00:11:11.13
Although Jesus' triumphal
entry is recorded in each of
00:11:11.13\00:11:14.40
the four gospels this
tradition I must add is very
00:11:14.40\00:11:17.03
difficult to preach.
00:11:17.03\00:11:19.70
It's difficult to
preach because unlike the cross
00:11:19.70\00:11:22.43
unlike the
resurrection unlike the baptism
00:11:22.43\00:11:24.53
in the Jordan
unlike the Passover
00:11:24.53\00:11:26.56
unlike the communion service
there is very little rooting
00:11:26.56\00:11:29.70
in the Old
Testament to substantiate what
00:11:29.70\00:11:31.93
we're talking about.
00:11:31.93\00:11:34.90
Though it is prophesied in the
Old Testament that Jesus would
00:11:34.90\00:11:37.46
enter into
Jerusalem riding on a donkey
00:11:37.46\00:11:40.36
the reality of the matter
is that the tradition of laying
00:11:40.36\00:11:43.56
down palm branches is not
rooted in Judaic tradition
00:11:43.56\00:11:47.56
but rather it comes if you study
00:11:47.56\00:11:49.90
from the Roman Empire.
00:11:49.90\00:11:51.66
You have to understand that
it was one of the traditions of
00:11:51.66\00:11:55.33
Rome that when a
soldier listen to me good
00:11:55.33\00:11:57.00
went out to battle
that when he came back with
00:11:57.00\00:12:01.46
victory they would lay
down palm branches as a sign of
00:12:01.46\00:12:05.56
victory as he marched in on
his horse with blazing saddles
00:12:05.56\00:12:09.93
and head raised high.
00:12:09.93\00:12:12.60
The laying down of palm
branches and the cheering of
00:12:12.60\00:12:16.23
people was a
sign of great victory.
00:12:16.23\00:12:18.90
It was a sign that
you defeated your enemy

your foes have been crushed
and you had risen victorious.
00:12:21.30\00:12:23.56
The laying down of
palm branches was a
00:12:23.56\00:12:27.76
signal of triumph.

So when Christ makes his way
toward Calvary these children

had looked at their former
oppressors and adopted from

their oppressors a
certain custom that they wanted

to perpetuate and say if
you can honor your heroes

then we honor ours as well.

So they borrowed from
Roman tradition and they took

the palm branches
laid them down in the way
00:12:51.30\00:12:54.93
and say hosanna in the highest.

As Jesus entered into the road
to Jerusalem they sang praises
00:12:58.13\00:13:03.76
to him just as they had
seen the Romans do when they
00:13:03.76\00:13:08.60
came back from battle.
00:13:08.60\00:13:11.00
Now the singing to the
victor is not something that is
00:13:11.00\00:13:14.73
strictly given to the Romans
for you will remember that in
00:13:14.73\00:13:17.83
the Old Testament when Saul
and David came back from their
00:13:17.83\00:13:22.23
wars in the Old Testament
the women ran out to meet them
00:13:22.23\00:13:26.03
and it was the singing
of the women that provoked
00:13:26.03\00:13:29.73
Saul to jealousy.
00:13:29.73\00:13:31.10
When the women sang
Saul had killed his thousand
00:13:31.10\00:13:35.50
David has
killed his ten thousand
00:13:35.50\00:13:39.20
the singing to the
victor is something that the
00:13:39.20\00:13:42.46
Jews did do.

The laying down of palm
branches was something that

was given to Rome but
in both issues there is

something that we must discuss.

For whether you sing to the
victor as the Jews did or lay

down the palm branches
as the Romans did you never

sang the song or
laid down the palm branch

until the victory had been won.

Somebody's going to

Remember this is not
a celebration of Christ

after the resurrection.

Jesus is on his way

out the palm branches

and yet my assignment
today is to move beyond the

temptation to be distracted
by the opulence of who

of the periphery of his vision.

the cross that has called me

it is the peripheral view

that he as a prophet
speaks to his disciples and says

and there you will find a colt

tied in front of a door.

And my mind I must admit today

is boggled because I
think why on a week that

you are about to die
why on a week that is a week

from hell would you take
the time to be mindful about a

colt tied to a door?

Yet on this the most important

week of his life
Jesus begins not to speak

about his Father in heaven
or ten thousand angels he could

have called down to
rescue him but Jesus

in the text his final week
speaks of a young colt tied

by a door and he says
to two of his disciples

come here.

He says I want you to
go into the next village

and there you will find a
colt tied in front of a door

and on the outside of
the door where two ways meet.

And my eye turned from
the splendor of who Christ is

friends of mine to
the degradation of a colt

that's tied to the front of
a door and wonder why do you

young colt on this final

week when you are about to die?

For God if you
control the universe

if you spoke
something out of nothing

if heaven is your throne

Don't get the one
that's running around free
