One day He's the Red
Cross shedding blood that is now

The next day He's the

One day He's a hematologist,

The next day He's a
podiatrist, folks that were

lame are now walking again.

One day He's an oncologist,
He's healing and curing cancer

and leprosy, but the next day
He's an ophthalmologist, He's

giving sight to the blind.

One day He's a
gynecologist, He's giving birth.

But then the next day He's a
cardiologist, He's fixing and

healing broken
hearts and torn lives.

Jesus was a trendsetter,
which also then made Him a rule

breaker.

Jesus didn't play by the rules.

He did things that
were out of bounds.

According to Roman Law in
Jesus' day it was forbidden

for there to be a gathering
of Jews in one place, but my

Bible teaches me that one
day Jesus had five thousand men,

plus women and children,
gathered on the mountainside

to hear him speak.

And a minister with power and
clarity in spite of Roman Law,

Jesus not only aggravated, if
you will, Roman authority, but

Jesus was a thorn in the
flesh of religious Jews also.

His disciples, they ate
without washing their hands,

He healed people on the
Sabbath, He traveled distances

that they didn't approve
of, He touched people that they

said He shouldn't touch.

But I've learned that
sometimes being in the will of

God causes you to be
out of the grace of people.

Jesus had thousands of
people following Him while He's

healing the sick
and raising the dead.
00:09:22.50\00:09:24.00
People were excited about
being close to Him, being near
00:09:24.00\00:09:28.10
Him, but when trouble
came they began to desert Him.
00:09:28.10\00:09:34.76
That's not strange because
all of us must go through a time
00:09:34.76\00:09:38.03
in our lives where people are
not with us, that those who we
00:09:38.03\00:09:43.33
thought would always be there
for us, are not there for us.

Because it is then, and
only then, that you start

recognizing the faithfulness
of God and the frailty of men.

You see, when Jesus
was arrested, apprehended,

wrongfully convicted and
nailed to a cross, all of a

sudden it was no
longer popular to be called

one of His disciples.

So when we step into this text
there's a great deal of fear

in the room.

A great deal of
controversy in the room.

And the disciples who
have been used by Jesus to heal

sick people, who have been
used by Jesus to teach people,

who have been sent out two
by two to effectively change

cities and revolutionize the
way people think, they are now
00:10:31.76\00:10:35.53
scared.
00:10:35.53\00:10:37.90
Jesus had been crucified.

He was dead and
they knew He was dead.

They laid His body in the
tomb, prepared Him for burial,

put Him in a tomb like a mummy.

This was supposed to be it.

They were afraid.

Many had laid down their
lives, their jobs and their

careers to follow Jesus.

Many of them had withstood the
controversy of their families

to follow Jesus.
00:11:01.83\00:11:02.90
They had forsaken their
business affairs and all of
00:11:02.90\00:11:06.00
their routines of
the day to follow Jesus.
00:11:06.00\00:11:09.23
They were so sure that He was
going to set up His kingdom on
00:11:09.23\00:11:12.20
earth that there was a debate
about who was going to sit on
00:11:12.20\00:11:15.13
His left side and who
was going to sit on His right
00:11:15.13\00:11:18.16
side.
00:11:18.16\00:11:19.50
And all those debates became
totally irrelevant now because
00:11:19.50\00:11:23.50
Jesus is dead.
00:11:23.50\00:11:25.73
There seemingly was to be no
kingdom and the disciples were

locked up behind
closed doors, afraid.
00:11:28.00\00:11:33.23
But then all of a sudden
here comes Jesus, the Jesus they
00:11:33.23\00:11:41.16
knew or thought they
knew was in the tomb.

They had rolled the stone in
front of the tomb to keep Him
00:11:45.73\00:11:49.03
in the tomb and to keep
anybody from taking His body
00:11:49.03\00:11:51.53
out of the tomb, this
Jesus appeared in the room and
00:11:51.53\00:11:57.13
ministered a word of
peace in a time of distress.

Jesus said, 'Peace be
unto you." Now the disciples

epitomized fear, distrust and
unease, but Jesus walked right

in and He speaks peace.

This, my friends, is
representative of the

disconnect we
often have with God.

Because sometimes God is
saying something that is over

here while you're feeling
something that is over there.

Isn't it amazing how God
can talk to you about prosperity

when you're on
the brink of poverty?

Isn't it interesting how
God will talk to you about

ministering to somebody else's
need at a time when you wish

you had somebody to
minister to your needs?

Isn't it amazing how God will
stand up in your life and give

you a word for somebody else
while you wait patiently for a

word yourself?

And it is into this
depressing, dreary, drab,

desolate and dismal
environment that Jesus comes.

Let me tell you something.

It was not the disciples'
faith that brought Jesus into

the room, for the
Bible says they were fearful.

You don't earn God's presence
just because you have faith.

Sometimes God will stop
by when you are faith-less.

Fearful and
intimidated, He shows up anyhow.

Have you ever gotten a
blessing and you couldn't even

explain how you
got the blessing?

Have you ever seen God
bless you at a time in your life

that you felt less than worthy
of the blessing than at any

other time in your life, but
God stopped by and blessed you

anyhow?

He came to the disciples, my
friends, not because they were

expecting Him but in
spite of them expecting Him.

He showed up anyway and said,
'Peace be unto you." But this

sermon did not
move the disciples.

The message Jesus preached
did not change the disciples.

bring them to their knees and

make them say, yes, Lord.

The Bible says He said, 'Peace
be unto you." They were not

changed, the Bible teaches,
until they saw His wounds.

When they saw His wounds,
the Bible then teaches that they

were then glad.

Let me share this with you.

Ministry is more than
messages, ministry is more

than sermons, it's more
than three, four or five points.

It's more than just decibel
levels, because if you're

something worth shouting about.

Ministry is more than just
breaking down Greek or Hebrew

Real ministry is when people
see you get wounded, see you

get cut, see you suffer
and you still rise up out of it

and you say, 'Though He slay
me, yet will I trust in Him."

Real ministry only happens
when you get some blood on

Study all you want, read
all you want, but until you've

bled over what you believe,
until you stood up against all

hell breaking loose in
your life, then people are glad.

preach until I've seen your

scars, your wounds, your
bruises, and then you bring

legitimacy to the faith
and dignity to the Gospel.

When the Bible says they
saw his wounds then they were

glad, let me illustrate.

When a man and a woman
exchange marital vows at the

wedding altar and they say,
'I take you for better or for

worse, for richer or for
poorer, in sickness and in

health." That
sounds nice and pretty.

But you know what?

It doesn't mean a thing
until you've gone through some

sickness, some troubles,
some turmoil and some way God

brings you back together again.

Do I have a

Legitimacy is
proven through struggle.

You can't say you're faithful
if you've never been tested.

Too many folks, I say it
all the time, test a lie instead

of testify.

But you can't testify until
you've been through a test.

When Jesus shows up, shows
them the wounds in His side,

the nail prints in His hands,
it is at that moment that the

disciples, the
Bible teaches, are glad.

They are all rejoicing.

They were all
excited, except one of them.

One of them wasn't there.

One of them was missing.

Now, understand, throughout
His ministry Jesus had taught

the power of the set.

What do I mean?

Even though they were glad,
the value of their joy could

not be complete in the
absence of their brother.

Let me illustrate.

You can go to the store
and buy some expensive shoes.

You pay a lot of money for
them, but if you lose one of

them, the one you have
left can be just as pretty as it

was before but it has no
value because the other shoe is

missing.

Jesus taught the
power of the set.

He said if you have 99 sheep
and you know one of them is

missing, you leave the 99
and go after the one because the

power is in the set.

Now you have to remember,
Bible students, they have

already lost Judas.

There's nothing that
they can do with Judas.

Judas actually filled
his purpose in his betrayal.

So you really can't count
Judas as missing because what

he was called to do
he had already done.

fulfilled the prophecy
that one would betray Jesus.

Judas commits suicide.

Judas is dead and that
leaves eleven disciples.

But the Bible says in the
text that there are only ten

disciples in the room.
