00:20 Did God change his law?
00:25 Go with me now to the Book of Psalms.
00:28 Psalms 89.
00:32 Did God change his law and the Sabbath?
00:34 Psalm 89, verse 34.
00:39 The Word of God says, God himself speaking,
00:46 "My covenant will I not break, nor alter
00:49 the thing that is gone out of my lips." If God said it,
00:57 that settles it.
00:59 Well, God the Father, he didn't change this?
01:02 Are you sure, Pastor?
01:03 Well, let me give you some more evidence.
01:05 Go with me to the book of Malachi, chapter 3, verse 6.
01:11 Malachi 3:6.
01:17 The Word of God says, "For I am the Lord.
01:21 I change not.
01:25 Therefore, ye sons of Jacob are not consumed." God says,
01:29 I'm the Lord.
01:30 I don't change.
01:31 I'm not like you all.
01:32 One day I'm this way, next day I'm that way.
01:34 God doesn't have mood swings like we do.
01:36 Are you hearing what I'm saying?
01:37 God is the same.
01:40 God says, "I change not."
01:41 I didn't change my law.
01:43 Well, if God didn't change his law, we're clear
01:45 from the Old Testament that the seventh day
01:46 is the Sabbath.
01:47 But Pastor, maybe that's an Old Testament thing.
01:52 What does the New Testament have to say?
01:54 If the Father didn't, well, maybe the Son,
01:57 Jesus Christ, did.
02:00 Maybe Jesus changed God's law.
02:03 Well, let's see what Jesus has to say.
02:06 God with me to the book of Matthew, chapter 5.
02:10 Know what you believe, know why you believe it,
02:12 know where it's found.
02:14 Matthew 5, verse 17.
02:17 Let's get in the Word.
02:19 Matthew 5:17, the Word of God says, "Think not that I am come
02:25 to destroy the law or the prophets.
02:28 I am come not to destroy but to fulfill." To fulfill.
02:32 Go on.
02:33 "For I say unto you, till heaven and earth
02:36 pass, one jot or one tittle shall in nowise pass
02:41 from the law, till all be fulfilled." Verse 19:
02:46 "Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least
02:48 commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the
02:51 least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do
02:53 and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom
02:57 of heaven." Jesus said, no, I didn't change
03:00 the Father's law.
03:02 I didn't change God's law.
03:03 I didn't change my law.
03:05 I didn't come to change it.
03:06 Jesus said, I came to fulfill it.
03:10 And then Jesus says, "Whoever preaches against
03:12 my law is going to be called least in my kingdom."
03:17 But he says, "Whosoever shall teach and
03:18 preach my law shall be called great in my kingdom." Also,
03:23 what else does the Word say about Jesus?
03:25 Go to the book of Hebrews, chapter 13, verse 8.
03:29 Jesus says, I couldn't change my law.
03:31 I couldn't change the law of God, Jesus said,
03:33 because you need to understand something about me.
03:35 Hebrews 13:8.
03:38 Jesus said, I can't change my law, because Jesus says,
03:40 "[I am] the same yesterday, and today, and forever."
03:46 I don't change.
03:47 So just like God the Father says, "I change not,"
03:50 God the Son says, I'm the "same yesterday,
03:53 and today, and forever."
03:54 Now the Word of God says, "And he came to
03:57 Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and lo, as his
04:02 custom was," which means this was not an isolated Sabbath.
04:07 That suggests his custom was that every seventh-day Sabbath
04:10 Jesus went into the synagogue.
04:14 Jesus went into the church, the holy convocation,
04:19 and stood up for to read.
04:21 Verse 17: "And there was delivered until him the book
04:24 of the prophet Isaiah, and when he had opened
04:27 the book, he found the place where it was written,"
04:30 in verse 18, "the spirit of the Lord is
04:34 upon me because he hath anointed me to preach the
04:38 gospel to the poor.
04:40 He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach
04:44 deliverance to the captives, to increase recovering of
04:49 sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are"
04:52 what, everybody?
04:53 "To preach the acceptable year of the" what, everybody?
04:57 Verse 20: "And he closed the book and he gave it again to
05:02 the ministry, sat down, and all the eyes of them that were
05:06 in the synagogue and the church were fastened on
05:09 Jesus." What do we discover from this text?
05:12 We discover from the text that Jesus, God the Son, he too
05:16 fulfilled the law, didn't change the law, but he
05:19 affirmed and kept God's seventh-day Sabbath.
05:22 He went into the synagogue, the church, on the seventh-day
05:25 Sabbath and read the scriptures. In fact,
05:30 in this text, Jesus was the guest preacher.
05:32 He preached the Word.
05:34 Read from the scriptures.
05:36 And then when he sat down, he closed the book and turned the
05:40 service back over to the host pastor.
05:42 You all hear what I'm saying?
05:44 Jesus too kept God's Sabbath.
05:51 All right, Pastor, the Father didn't, the Son couldn't,
05:58 Old Testament, New Testament, but maybe the disciples
06:03 changed God's Sabbath.
06:07 Maybe they changed this thing up.
06:08 Yeah, we understand there's seven days in the week, in six
06:10 days God created this earth, and the seventh day God
06:12 rested, blessed it, sanctified it.
06:13 But maybe the disciples changed God's law.
06:17 Go to Acts.
06:20 Know what you believe, know why you believe it, know where
06:22 it's found.
06:23 Acts, chapter 13.
06:24 Let's get some Word in you.
06:27 If you're going to shout on the Word, know what you're
06:29 shouting about.
06:30 Acts 13, verse 42.
06:44 The Word of God says to us today: "And when the Jews were
06:47 gone out of the synagogue," the church, "the Gentiles
06:53 besought that these words might be preached to them
06:56 the next sabbath.
06:58 Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews
07:00 and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas:
07:03 who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue
07:05 in the grace of God.
07:07 And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together
07:15 to hear the word of God."
07:20 Go to the book of Hebrews.
07:23 Know what you believe, know why you believe it,
07:25 know where it's found.
07:26 I told you, we're going to work all the way
07:29 up to Revelation.
07:30 Hebrews, chapter 4, verse 4.
07:33 Look it up in your Bibles.
07:33 Hebrews 4:4.
07:39 The Word of God says us today in Hebrews 4:4: "For he spake
07:49 in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And
07:54 God did rest the seventh day from all his works.
07:55 And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.
07:57 Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein,
07:59 and they to whom it was first preached entered not in
08:00 because of unbelief: Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying
08:05 in David, Today, after so long a time; as it is said, Today
08:07 if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts."
08:14 Verse 8, the clincher for me: "For if Jesus had
08:17 given them rest, then would he not afterward
08:18 have spoken of another day.
08:23 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God."
08:29 Hebrews, clearly, after Jesus' death.
08:32 If Jesus had changed the Sabbath, then would
08:37 he not have told us?
08:40 I mean, really, if God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
08:43 can create something out of nothing, surely if they
08:47 changed the Sabbath they would have told somebody.
08:52 Well, the argument that's out there that says, well, you
08:55 know, the Sabbath was done away with at the cross.
08:57 The Sabbath really didn't have much to do with the cross in
09:01 the sense that the Sabbath was instituted before sin.
09:06 In Genesis 2, God instituted the Sabbath.
09:12 In Genesis 3, Adam and Eve disobeyed God, ate of the
09:17 fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil,
09:19 in essence, disobedient.
09:20 It's in Genesis 3 that Adam and Eve sinned.
09:23 Think about it.
09:24 Genesis 1, God creates this earth.
09:26 Genesis 2, God institutes the Sabbath.
09:30 Genesis 3, Adam and Eve sinned.
09:33 The reason why Jesus had to come back the second time was
09:37 he had to come to save us from sin.
09:41 Jesus had to go to Calvary so that through his shed blood
09:44 we might have everlasting life free from the penalty of sin.
09:49 If Adam and Eve had never sinned, humanity would
09:52 not have followed in our fore-parents, and we would
09:55 have not have sinned.
09:56 If Adam and Eve had not sinned, there would have
09:58 been no sin.
10:02 If Adam and Eve had not disobeyed God in sin, there
10:05 would have been no need for Jesus, our Saviour, to come
10:09 and die for us on Calvary.
10:12 But before Adam and Even sinned, the Sabbath
10:16 was already in place.
10:22 All right, Pastor Byrd, that makes sense.
10:25 The seventh-day Sabbath is good, Old Testament,
10:27 New Testament.
10:27 Good for the Father, good for the Son,
10:29 good for the apostles.
10:31 Pastor Byrd, how do we know which day is the seventh-day
10:38 Sabbath?
10:39 Now read Revelation.
10:41 Go to Revelation, chapter 1, verse 10.
10:47 Know what you believe, know why you believe it, know where
10:50 it's found.
10:52 Revelation 1:10.
10:56 John the Revelator, on the Isle of Patmos, says, "I was
10:59 in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a
11:05 great voice, as of a trumpet."
11:08 Now, nowhere in the text does it read that John said, "I was
11:12 in the Spirit on the Lord's day, be it the first day, the
11:15 second day, third, fourth, fifth, sixth or seventh day.
11:17 It just says, "I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day."
11:21 Now, there are many in the Christian community who try to
11:23 suggest that by John saying he was in the Spirit on the
11:26 Lord's day that he was in the Spirit on a specific day.
11:29 But the Bible does not say that.
11:31 The Bible just says that John said, "I was in the Spirit on
11:34 the Lord's day." Now go back to Mark, chapter 2,
11:40 and we're going to go to verse 27 and 28.
11:46 Mark 2:27-28.
11:50 Jesus himself speaking, "And he said unto them,
11:52 The sabbath was made for man, and not man
11:59 for the sabbath." Come on, the Sabbath was made
12:02 for whom, everybody?
12:03 And not man for the what?
12:05 Sabbath.
12:07 "Therefore the Son of man," and the Son of man is Jesus,
12:10 "is Lord also of the sabbath."
12:15 So if Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath day, then the Sabbath
12:20 must be the Lord's day.
12:22 When John was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, John was in
12:26 the Spirit on the Sabbath day, because the Sabbath was made
12:30 for man and not man for the Sabbath, and the Sabbath day
12:33 is the Lord's day.
12:34 Because Jesus, the Son of man, is Lord of the what,
12:37 everybody? Sabbath.
12:40 Pastor Byrd, well, what about, what do you mean?
12:43 How do we know?
12:44 Seventh-day Sabbath?
12:45 How do we know?
12:46 I mean, well, I could tell you, let's go to the calendar.
12:50 And you go to a calendar, you'll see Sunday's the first
12:52 day, Monday's the second day, Tuesday's the third day,
12:54 Wednesday's the fourth day, Thursday's the fifth day,
12:56 Friday's the sixth day, Saturday, the Sabbath,
12:58 is the seventh day.
12:59 I could tell you that.
13:00 But then you'll say, oh, well, Pastor, you know, sometimes
13:03 they change calendars up, and I just don't know,
13:04 Pastor Byrd.
13:05 I really just don't know.
13:06 And I say, well, maybe we can go to speak to persons who
13:08 speak the Spanish language.
13:10 Because the people who speak the Spanish language will tell
13:12 you that the Spanish term for Saturday is Sabado, which is a
13:16 transliteration of the word Sabbath. Well, Pastor Byrd,
13:21 I don't know.
13:22 We've got all this different language around.
13:24 Are you sure about that?
13:25 Are you sure?
13:26 I say, well, we can go talk to an authentic Jew, and they
13:30 will tell you that Saturday, the seventh day,
13:32 is the Sabbath.
13:35 But consistent with our teaching and preaching, let's
13:39 go to the Word.
13:40 Now, let's go to Luke 23, verse 50.
13:45 Know what you believe, know why you believe it,
13:46 know where it's found.
13:47 Luke 23:50, let's go there.
13:49 Now, remember, somebody is seated out there today,
13:52 somebody's watching this on television, and they're
13:54 saying, Pastor Byrd, I want the Bible to say, Remember
13:57 Saturday, to keep it holy.
14:04 Someone out there today is saying, Pastor Byrd, I want
14:06 the Bible to say, Remember Saturday to keep it holy.
14:10 Now, the Bible says remember the what day?
14:12 Seventh day.
14:13 To keep it what? Holy.
14:14 But you want it to say, Remember Saturday,
14:17 to keep it holy.
14:17 You want it to literally say the term.
14:20 Well, let me say this to you.
14:21 The Bible does not say, as I say all the time,
14:24 Thou shalt not smoke crack.
14:27 The Bible teaches a principle, and the Bible says that your
14:34 body is the temple of whom?
14:36 God. So you know, because your body's
14:38 the temple of God, you know that crack
14:41 doesn't belong in your body.
14:42 Come on, say Amen.
14:43 The Bible says, Remember the Sabbath day,
14:47 to keep it what? Holy.
14:49 And that the seventh day is the what? Sabbath.
14:51 But let's see what the Word says in Luke 23:50.
14:55 "And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor;
15:01 and he was a good man, and a just man: (The same had not
15:04 consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of
15:08 Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited
15:16 for the kingdom of God.
15:19 This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus."
15:25 Why? Because this man, Joseph, was the undertaker.
15:28 He was the funeral director.
15:29 Let's keep reading from the Word of God.
15:31 "And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid
15:34 it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never
15:36 man before was laid.
15:39 And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath
15:42 drew on." Which suggests to me the day that Jesus' body was
15:45 taken down from the cross was the day before the Sabbath.
15:49 Verse 55: And the women also, which came with him from
15:53 Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how
15:55 his body was laid.
15:57 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments;
15:58 and rested the" what day?
16:00 "Sabbath day according to the commandment." Chapter 24,
16:04 verse 1: "Now upon the first day of the week, very early in
16:09 the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the
16:11 spices which they had prepared, and certain
16:13 others with them.
16:13 And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.
16:18 And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.
16:21 And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed
16:23 thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining
16:25 garments: And as they were afraid, and bowed down their
16:27 faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the
16:29 living among the dead?
16:30 He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you
16:35 when he was yet in Galilee, saying, The Son of man must be
16:37 delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified,
16:39 and the third day rise again.
16:42 And they remembered his words." This text is clear.
16:48 On the sixth day, the preparation day, known in the
16:56 Christian community as Good Friday, Jesus' body was taken
17:01 down from the cross.
17:03 Jesus had died on the cross and his body was taken down
17:06 from the cross.
17:07 The Bible says that the Sabbath drew on, which means
17:10 that after the preparation day, day six, Good Friday, now
17:14 the seventh-day Sabbath, Saturday, his body lay
17:17 resting in the grave.
17:19 The Bible says--if God said it, that settles it--according
17:21 to the commandment.
17:23 Then the Bible says early the first day of the week, his
17:28 body was not there.
17:29 Christian community calls it Easter Sunday.
17:31 His body was not there, but Jesus rose.
17:36 Any math teacher will tell you, after day six comes day
17:39 seven, and since there are seven days in a week, you now
17:43 start back with day number one.
17:45 Day six, Good Friday, Jesus died, body taken from the
17:50 grave.
17:50 Day seven, Saturday, the Sabbath, his body lay resting
17:54 in the grave.
17:55 Day one, Sunday, known in the Christian community as Easter,
17:58 Jesus rose.
18:04 It's tight, but it's right.
18:12 Pastor Byrd, all right, the Word is clear.
18:20 The seventh-day Saturday, the Sabbath, holy convocation.
18:23 Sunset to sunset, evening to morning sunset Friday, sunset
18:27 Saturday, not speaking my own words, doing my own thing.
18:29 God did it, Jesus did it, the apostles did it,
18:33 we ought to do it.
18:34 Pastor Byrd, what difference does a day make?
18:45 God is a God of specifics.
18:47 God means what he says.
18:49 Pastor Byrd, what difference does a day make?
18:51 I don't need to know what difference a day makes.
18:53 All I need to know is, God says, remember the seventh-day
18:57 Sabbath, to keep it holy, and if God said it,
19:02 that settles it.
19:09 Isaiah 66:22, 23.
19:16 This is why this is so pivotal for us today.
19:20 Isaiah 66:22, 23.
19:29 A couple more texts.
19:31 This is why it's so important: "For as the new heavens and
19:40 the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me,
19:44 saith the Lord, so shall your seed and your name remain."
19:48 Verse 23: "And it shall come to pass, that from one new
19:52 moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all
19:59 flesh come to worship before me, saith the Lord.
20:10 The day is going to come that not just here on planet Earth,
20:13 but when we get to heaven, when we sing and never get
20:18 tired, when we put on our long white robes, when I fly from
20:23 my mansion to your mansion, the time is going to come that
20:28 though we have a good time with each other and with the
20:31 Lord, that when the Sabbath rolls in, that the Bible is
20:34 clear that in the new heavens and the new earth, God says,
20:37 my people are going to come together and worship before
20:41 me, saith the Lord.
20:44 And when I get to heaven, and I see my Jesus, and I see the
20:49 one who died for me, and it becomes that first Sabbath
20:53 that I see my Jesus, I'm going to say hallelujah,
20:58 home at last.
21:00 The redeemed are home at last.
21:03 The Lord is in his holy temple.
21:06 Let all the earth keep silence before him.
21:09 Oh come and magnify the Lord with me.
21:14 And let us on his Sabbath exalt his name together.
21:18 It's clear.
21:24 The Word of God says it.
21:29 And let me say this.
21:31 I've got two more texts for you.
21:33 But let me say this to you.
21:35 I don't stand here, preach and teach the Sabbath, because I
21:43 feel that if I don't do this, if I don't preach this, if I
21:45 don't teach this, if I don't observe God's Sabbath, I don't
21:48 do it because I'm afraid of going to hell.
21:54 Some of us do right because we're afraid to go to hell.
22:01 That's our motivation.
22:01 We want to do right.
22:02 We don't want to go to hell, we don't to burn.
22:03 No, no, no.
22:04 I observe God's Sabbath, I keep God's Sabbath because
22:06 I love the Lord.
22:11 And if loving the Lord is wrong, I don't want
22:13 to be right.
22:14 Jesus said, If ye love me, keep my commandments.
22:17 Heaven is not a fire escape from hell.
22:24 Because if you don't really want to be there, if you don't
22:26 really love the Lord Jesus, you're not going
22:29 to be happy there.
22:30 But I preach this and teach this because I love Jesus.
22:39 And I love Jesus, I want his Word, I want his truth, I want
22:45 to know what I believe, I want to know why I believe it, I
22:47 want to know where it's found.
22:48 There's too much false doctrine out there.
22:51 People preach and teach whatever they want
22:54 the Bible to say.
22:55 If you're not careful, the devil will use the Bible
22:57 to justify some horrible stuff.
23:02 But you've got to let the Word of God speak for itself.
23:11 So, Pastor Byrd, it's so easy, so simply, you made it so
23:15 plain, the Word of God.
23:16 Yeah, but, Pastor Byrd, what's the problem?
23:19 Go to the book of Mark, chapter 7, verse 6.
23:27 Mark 7:6.
23:36 The Word of God says, "He answered and said
23:43 unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites,
23:46 as it is written, This people honoreth
23:50 me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
23:57 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines
24:00 the commandments of men.
24:03 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold
24:05 the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups:
24:09 and many other such like things ye do.
24:11 And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment
24:17 of God, that ye may keep your own tradition." Last text,
24:30 Hebrews 10:26.
24:44 Now, we know, as we turn there, that sin is the
24:46 transgression of God's law.
24:50 Sin is when you disobey God's law.
24:54 Let's see what the Word says.
24:55 Hebrews 10:26: "For if we sin wilfully after that we have
25:05 received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more
25:10 sacrifice for sins." God is going to hold everyone in this
25:19 church, everyone over the Internet, everyone over the
25:21 television, he's going to hold us all accountable for what we
25:24 read from his Word today.
25:28 If we sin willfully, after we have received the knowledge of
25:34 the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for our sins.
25:41 God loves you.
25:45 God loves you.
25:47 God loves you.
25:49 God died to save you.
25:52 God has given us his Word, the roadmap on how
25:55 we get to heaven.
25:56 The question now is, do we love God enough to follow what
26:00 his Word says?
