today's program "Giant Killers".

be familiar with your Bibles

you know that the story of David
and Goliath is a perfect picture

of what a giant
killer should be.

We know that there
are giants out there
00:00:56.49\00:00:59.39
and when you decide to
follow Christ you have giants
00:00:59.42\00:01:01.49
that you have to face.
We all have giants that
00:01:01.52\00:01:04.14
we need to face and in
this context we're talking about
00:01:04.18\00:01:08.28
the giants that are found
in the entertainment industry,
00:01:08.31\00:01:11.06
the struggles that we
come across when we decide
00:01:11.09\00:01:14.66
that we're going
to follow Christ.

We want to lay out, in
this program, those steps

to becoming an
effective "giant killer",

how to get rid of those giants,
how to overcome those giants

that are standing
between you and Jesus Christ.

on the last half of the verse

where it says that
people that do know their God

will be strong and do exploits.

Yes. It's speaking about

the people in the last days,
who, through the power of God,

will be doing mighty
exploits, mighty deeds for

and through Jesus Christ.

I know that I want to
be a part of that people,

I want my wife to be
a part of that people,

but I know that I want
you out there to be a part

of that people who are
doing mighty things for God.

Now, Atonte, one of the
best stories in the Bible

that illustrates this theme
of mighty exploits is found

in the story of
David and Goliath.

Before we look at the actual
story of David and Goliath

we want to look at
some of the other things
00:03:10.38\00:03:11.84
that surrounded
the life of David.

That's going to give
us some insight into what

mighty exploits means,
especially in these last days.

So, why don't we
go to 1 Chronicles 12

and I'm going to ahead
and read verses 1, 2 and 8.

The Bible says there:

And than verse 8 reads:

Now, Atonte, when I
read this, it excites me

because I'd like to use
my godly imagination here

and I wonder: why did these
mighty men (and we're going to

read a little bit about these
mighty men in a little while),

but why did these mighty
men joined themselves to David
00:04:32.53\00:04:36.14
as he was hiding out in
the wilderness from Saul?

Well, I can just
imagine that these mighty men
00:04:39.80\00:04:43.10
who were maybe around
the same age as David,
00:04:43.13\00:04:45.17
they were all young men,
that when they were children,
00:04:45.21\00:04:49.45
they must have
heared an incredible story
00:04:49.49\00:04:52.94
about a little boy
who had taken on a giant
00:04:52.97\00:04:56.55
named Goliath.
00:04:56.58\00:04:58.06
- Right. He was like their hero.
00:04:58.09\00:04:59.70
- He was their hero. I
can imagine dad coming home
00:04:59.73\00:05:02.04
one day and saying to his wife:
"Honey, you'll never believe
00:05:02.07\00:05:04.52
what happened."
00:05:04.55\00:05:05.52
And one of these might
men is a child of these times
00:05:05.54\00:05:08.80
and he's listening and
he hears dad telling a story
00:05:08.83\00:05:12.87
about this little boy
not to much older then
00:05:12.91\00:05:15.61
this child, saying:
"This boy went out and took on
00:05:15.64\00:05:19.33
this giant, named
Goliath and slew him."
00:05:19.36\00:05:22.03
I can imagine in the
minds and in the hearts
00:05:22.07\00:05:24.79
of these little children
that David had become their hero
00:05:24.82\00:05:29.16
and they were probably saying:
"I would love to meet David,
00:05:29.20\00:05:31.84
I would love to
be just like David."
00:05:31.87\00:05:36.47
And now you have
this story where these
00:05:36.50\00:05:39.58
mighty men come out and say:
"We're going to join to David
00:05:39.62\00:05:42.29
because we believe that
he is the man for the time,
00:05:42.32\00:05:45.12
he is the man of the hour."
00:05:45.16\00:05:46.98
Now, let's read
about these mighty men.
00:05:47.02\00:05:49.14
2 Samuel 23 and we're going
to look at the discriptions
00:05:49.18\00:05:54.40
and some of the
exploits of these mighty men.

We'll go ahead and
read verse 8 to begin with:

- Wow! And we think we
have super-heroes in the movies.

This are truly super-heroes.

- That is
amazing. 800 at on time!

the time to do that on the show,

This is a mighty exploit!

What about verse 10?

have this mighty man

who takes on the
entire Philistine army

by himself and all
day he's just out there

slaying this
army, and the Bible says

the Lord had given
him this great victory.

- They actually were
doing great exploits than David.

- Oh, they were
doing some mighty things.

Notice verse 13. It says:

- David has not
yet conquered Bethlehem

and I can imagine him.
The Bible says he longed.

He wasn't talking
to people and saying:

"Somebody go get me a drink
from the well of Bethlehem".

It's like he was
talking to himself,
00:08:10.10\00:08:12.83
maybe in a room alone
and what he's saying is:

"I want to capture Bethlehem,
I want to get Bethlehem",

and he's saying: "Oh,
if someone would get me
00:08:19.71\00:08:23.04
a drink from the well".

He's speaking simbolically.
00:08:24.19\00:08:25.79
Listen to what
happens. Verse 16 says:

These three mighty men,
they may have been outside

David's door, they may have
overheard him talking to himself

and said: "You know
what? Why don't we go down
00:09:08.86\00:09:10.91
to the well of Bethlehem,
break into the Philistines
00:09:10.95\00:09:13.56
and get David a drink of water."
00:09:13.60\00:09:16.01
Can you imagine? The
Philistines are all there,
00:09:16.04\00:09:17.80
you know, they're in
Bethlehem, and all of a sudden
00:09:17.83\00:09:20.45
they see three
Israelites comming towards them
00:09:20.49\00:09:22.18
and they're going:
"These guys must be crazy!
00:09:22.21\00:09:23.87
What are they doing?"
00:09:23.90\00:09:24.87
And they suddenly approach
them and they pull out swords
00:09:24.88\00:09:28.52
and they begin the fight.
00:09:28.56\00:09:30.18
And they're fighting, and
they're getting the victory.
00:09:30.21\00:09:32.75
And the
Philistines may be desoriented
00:09:32.78\00:09:34.94
and they're going:
"What are these guys after?"

And they work their way
to the well, take out a flasc
00:09:36.41\00:09:39.81
dip water in it and
start fighting their way
00:09:39.85\00:09:41.92
back out and the
Philistines must be going:

"What in the world
is this all about?"

All for their love for David.

Now, talk about a comittment,
talk about a willingness to risk

their lives. These are
the exploits that they did.
00:09:55.72\00:09:58.79
And then, the Bible
says: "When David found out,
00:09:58.82\00:10:00.78
he pourred it out. He said:
I will not drink this water."
00:10:00.81\00:10:03.60
Did David's men love him? Yes.
00:10:03.63\00:10:06.56
Did David love his men? Yes.
00:10:06.60\00:10:09.05
And we see there
this concept of love,
00:10:09.09\00:10:12.85
this experiancial
love between these men
00:10:12.89\00:10:16.73
and we're going to
learn a lesson about that

in a little while.
Let's read on a little more
00:10:18.27\00:10:20.06
about these mighty
men. In verse 18 it says:
00:10:20.09\00:10:23.46

And now notice verse 20:

And in another place
it says: "on a snowy day".

I'd like to ask this question:
How many of you out there

would like to fight
a lion on a good day?

No, not really.
00:10:59.74\00:11:00.71
Sunshine, the clouds
are out, everything is nice.
00:11:00.72\00:11:03.06
You wouldn't fight a
lion on a good day...
00:11:03.09\00:11:04.62
The Bible says you know how
it's like to walk in snow...

Well, this man is fighting,
he kills a lion in snow.
00:11:07.44\00:11:11.29
We're talking about mighty men,
00:11:11.32\00:11:13.76
and, Atonte, it's
amazing. You said it before:

these mighty men seem
to have been doing more
00:11:16.21\00:11:18.87
powerful exploits than David.
00:11:18.91\00:11:21.72
Just imagine. One of
these men could have said:
00:11:21.76\00:11:23.53
"You know what? I'm pretty
powerful. I can take David."
00:11:23.57\00:11:27.16
But it never
crossed their minds.
00:11:27.19\00:11:29.41
They loved David
and David loved them
00:11:29.44\00:11:32.06
and they joined
themselves onto David.
00:11:32.10\00:11:34.81
Now, here's the beautiful
thing about this story.

David is a type of
Christ in the Scriptures.
00:11:38.66\00:11:43.34
If you're familiar with
the story of David and Goliath
00:11:43.37\00:11:45.76
you'll remember that
David was feeding his sheep,
00:11:45.79\00:11:50.88
was watching over
his father's sheep
00:11:50.91\00:11:52.81
when a lion and a bear
rose up, attacked the sheep.
00:11:52.85\00:11:58.42
David slays the
lion and the bear.
00:11:59.18\00:12:04.15
Shortly after that, David's
father sends him out to go
00:12:04.18\00:12:09.13
check on his brothers who
were in the midst of a battle
00:12:09.17\00:12:13.78
with a giant named Goliath.
00:12:13.82\00:12:16.57
When David gets on the scene,
00:12:16.60\00:12:18.44
are his brothers
excited to see him? No.
00:12:18.47\00:12:22.64
They don't
accept him well at all.
00:12:22.67\00:12:25.34
Nonetheless, David,
despite their rejection,
00:12:25.38\00:12:29.27
he slays the giant by delivering
a fatal wound to his head.
00:12:29.31\00:12:34.83
And the victory is won!

Because of that he is elevated.
00:12:37.63\00:12:39.88
And because of his elevation,
Saul, who is king of Israel,
00:12:39.91\00:12:44.78
becomes jealous and now
he's going about to kill David.

Now, David has already
been anointed to be the king.

He is the rightful
king, but at the present time
00:12:51.80\00:12:54.06
who is the king? Saul!
00:12:54.10\00:12:56.43
Now, how was
David a type of Christ?
00:12:56.47\00:12:59.85
Christ was in heaven
watching His Father's flock,
00:12:59.88\00:13:05.85
the angels.
00:13:05.88\00:13:07.00
A dragon rose up and Jesus
cast the dragon out of heaven.
00:13:07.04\00:13:12.63
Shortly after that,
the Father sends the Son
00:13:12.66\00:13:17.05
to where?
00:13:17.09\00:13:18.52
To the earth, that's
right. To the earth to check up
00:13:18.56\00:13:22.72
on His brothers who are
in the middle of a conflict

with a giant named: the Devil.

They are not
happy to receive Christ,

but, nonetheless,
Christ, on calvary delivers

a fatal wound to
the head of the serpent.

You remember, in the previous
program, that the word "calvary"

means "cranium".
And so, when Jesus died,

that skull-shaped hill
called Golgotha or Calvary

was broken apart.
00:13:51.36\00:13:52.75
It represented the fact
that the skull of Satan,

the head of Satan had
received a deadly wound,
00:13:56.41\00:14:00.17
as it was
prophecised in Genesis 3:15.

And so we've got
this incredible paralel.

Because of that
Jesus has been exalted

as the King, the
rightful king of this earth.

And guess what? He's not
the king of this planet yet.

Who's still the king?

- Satan - It's Satan!

So, Jesus is in heaven,
just as David was hidding

in the wilderness. He was
going to be the rightful king

and these men came out
of Saul's kingdom and said:

"We're going to join
ourselves onto David."

The question I have is:
where are the mighty men
00:14:31.28\00:14:34.40
that are supposed to
be joining themselves
00:14:34.43\00:14:37.53
to the rightfull king of
this earth, Jesus Christ?

- We should be those mighty men!
00:14:41.21\00:14:42.18
- We should be those mighty men!
00:14:42.19\00:14:45.44
God is calling for us to do
exploits, for us to come out
00:14:45.48\00:14:50.17
from under 'king Saul'
or from under the prince
00:14:50.20\00:14:53.81
of this world who
is Satan, to come out
00:14:53.85\00:14:57.23
from under the principalities,
from all those things
00:14:57.26\00:15:00.32
that he exercises
his dominion in and say:
00:15:00.36\00:15:04.31
"We're going to go and
join ourselves onto Jesus,
00:15:04.34\00:15:07.01
the same Jesus that I heard
about when I was a little child.
00:15:07.04\00:15:09.98
My hero, Jesus.

I want to join Him.

When we do that, Jeseu
says: 'I'm going to make you
00:15:13.43\00:15:15.91
a mighty man. You're going to
go out and do mighty exploits.

You're going to go
out and slay giants.'

So, let's go ahead and
look at this story now,

Goliath and how we can learn

to slay our giants.

We're going to
go to 1 Samuel 17,

and we're going to
go through these points

pretty rapidily.
So, let's go ahead

and begin with verse 23.

David's encounter with Goliath.

Goliath has been coming
forth and he's been making

claims and saying:

'I can do this, and
I'm going to do that

and none of you
can challenge me.'

And the Bible says
these very significant words,

it says David heard them.

Now, when I was
little in school,
00:16:24.62\00:16:25.81
when I was younger
and I was in school,
00:16:25.85\00:16:27.72
7th - 8th grade and highschool,

when someone said
something bad about you
00:16:30.38\00:16:32.68
or bad about your mother...

and you heard those words,

it was time for war!

And the Bible says that
David heard these words.

There's more than just saying:

'Oh, I heard what
the giant was saying...'

No! David heard these words
and the challenge that he heard

coming from the
giant stirred his heart.

Our number one principle,
number one point is that
00:17:01.60\00:17:04.41
we must hear the challenge
and the boastings of Satan.
00:17:04.45\00:17:09.28
- And he's daily
doing this to us.
00:17:09.32\00:17:10.68
- That's right.
Satan's telling us,
00:17:10.71\00:17:12.70
he's telling our young people:
'Look, you can't to this,
00:17:12.73\00:17:14.90
you can't be
victorious, you can't overcome.
00:17:14.94\00:17:17.00
Who is your God that
is going to deliver you
00:17:17.04\00:17:19.22
out of my hands?'
00:17:19.26\00:17:20.48
- 'You can't be on
fire for God. It's not cool.
00:17:20.51\00:17:22.97
You won't be popular!'
00:17:23.00\00:17:25.27
- That's right! We've
got to learn how to hear
00:17:25.30\00:17:27.80
the challenge and
say: 'What did he say?
00:17:27.83\00:17:31.23
Did I just hear him
say that the only way
00:17:31.27\00:17:35.20
that I'm going to stay in the
church is if I'm entertained?
00:17:35.24\00:17:38.13
Okay...I heard those words!'
00:17:38.17\00:17:40.45
And once you hear those
words, that's the first step
00:17:40.49\00:17:43.01
because it triggers a
reaction like it did with David.
00:17:43.04\00:17:47.03
Notice verse 25,
our second principle.

-Now, I want you to
notice this point here.

David, or rather
Goliath has been coming forward

and making this
challenge for forty days.

And remember that
number, forty days.

And for forty days the Israelits
have been running back;
00:18:18.37\00:18:23.25
as soon as
Goliath appears, they run.
00:18:23.28\00:18:25.89
Now, there was a valley
between these two armies,

the Philistines
and the Israelits.
00:18:30.73\00:18:32.52
The Israelits were on one side,
the Philistines on the other,
00:18:32.55\00:18:35.62
and, on day one,
Goliath comes out,

and I'm sure he's on
his side of the valley.

But everyday, Goliath
gets a little bit bolder.

I'm sure Goliath looked
humangus from the other side.

The Israelits saw him
from a distance and said:

'This guy is big!'
00:18:50.61\00:18:52.17
But, as day after day
Goliath would come forward
00:18:52.20\00:18:56.42
and the Israelits would
run, Goliath's confidence grew
00:18:56.46\00:18:59.91
even more and he
would come closer.

And Goliath worked
himself down the valley,
00:19:02.07\00:19:04.33
until, by the time David
gets here, Goliath is making

his way up the
other side of the valley.

That's why they say:
'Have you seen this man
00:19:11.46\00:19:12.64
that's come up?'

And I'm sure that the
giant looked much bigger now

close up, than he
did on the other side.

-I have to pause you
right there because we do that

everyday and wonder
why we don't have victory.

We hear or see our
giant and then we run,

like the
Isrealits, the other way,

and so, our giant
gets bigger and bigger
