> I want to welcome you to another great edition 00:00:16.82\00:00:19.25 of Bible Alive. Before we get started today with our exciting 00:00:19.28\00:00:22.75 Bible passages, I think we're going to be talking about 00:00:22.78\00:00:25.52 temptation. You won't want to miss this. I want to introduce 00:00:25.55\00:00:28.78 you to two great friends of mine. Pastor Howard, it's good 00:00:28.81\00:00:31.94 to have you here today. >> It's good to be here, Dwight back in 00:00:31.97\00:00:34.10 Coldwater, Michigan. > and Rudy, my brother, glad you're here 00:00:34.13\00:00:36.88 Rudy. >>> Always glad to be here. > And I think we're going 00:00:36.91\00:00:39.67 to have a good time together. I know we were talking off the set 00:00:39.70\00:00:42.70 and a lot going on and we're going to be talking about 00:00:42.73\00:00:45.85 temptation today >> That's right > and Mark, I think you have a 00:00:45.88\00:00:49.16 passage that you'd like to share in Hebrews. Before we start, I 00:00:49.19\00:00:53.88 want each one of you to get your Bibles if you haven't gotten 00:00:53.91\00:00:56.32 them already and... but before we start, we always like to 00:00:56.35\00:00:59.61 start with the Word of prayer that God will send His Holy 00:00:59.64\00:01:02.14 Spirit to open our minds up. Rudy, would you have a prayer 00:01:02.17\00:01:04.71 for us today? >>> Yes, I will be glad to. Dear Heavenly Father, 00:01:04.74\00:01:07.72 thank you so much for the opportunity to study Your Word. 00:01:07.75\00:01:10.64 We ask that you would give us a blessing of Your wisdom > Amen. 00:01:10.67\00:01:14.66 >>> and have the Holy Spirit guide and direct our minds and 00:01:14.69\00:01:17.27 our thoughts so that we can get the message that was determined 00:01:17.30\00:01:21.13 out of this passage in the Bible on temptation, very concerning 00:01:21.16\00:01:26.18 topic that we have today. We just ask Your blessing on that 00:01:26.21\00:01:29.56 in Jesus Name. Amen. > Amen. >> Amen. 00:01:29.59\00:01:32.05 > So temptation, have you got your Bibles? Let's get going. 00:01:32.08\00:01:35.00 Mark, what's >> What's the text > the text to begin with? 00:01:35.03\00:01:36.89 >> Well, we're going to go to the book of Hebrews. 00:01:36.92\00:01:38.19 > OK >>We're going to Hebrews Chapter 4 > OK >> We're going to 00:01:38.22\00:01:42.16 be looking at verses 15 and 16. Actually, we could start in 00:01:42.19\00:01:45.50 verse 14 and gives us a little bit of the context of what's 00:01:45.53\00:01:49.16 being written here. > So, Hebrews Chapter 4, starting with 00:01:49.19\00:01:52.56 verse what again? >> Verse 14. > OK, verse 14 >> and the Bible 00:01:52.59\00:01:56.32 says, 00:01:56.35\00:01:57.32 > Wow! 00:02:16.01\00:02:16.98 Now Dwight, this is a really challenging passages... passage 00:02:22.78\00:02:27.09 to some people for two reasons. Number one, it tells us that 00:02:27.12\00:02:30.59 Jesus was tempted in all points like we are and that's... that's 00:02:30.62\00:02:35.73 hard for people to understand in of itself. How could he be 00:02:35.76\00:02:38.04 tempted like us but then it adds, "and yet without sin. " 00:02:38.07\00:02:41.71 > Yeah. >> Which is... so, how... how can he be tempted 00:02:41.74\00:02:44.44 just like we're tempted and then never sin? We would just assume 00:02:44.47\00:02:47.81 that anybody who's tempted like we're tempted would have to 00:02:47.84\00:02:50.52 give in to sin and so this passage brings both of those 00:02:50.55\00:02:53.39 things out in the aspect of temptation. > Well, you know, 00:02:53.42\00:02:56.78 something that just as you was reading and I've read this... 00:02:56.81\00:03:00.11 read this... these text many times before, something that 00:03:00.14\00:03:03.70 just, you know... grabbed me and verse 16, it 00:03:03.73\00:03:07.95 says, "Let us therefore," and the "therefore" is about verse 00:03:07.98\00:03:12.10 14 to 15. >> That's right. > So it's saying, "Let us therefore 00:03:12.13\00:03:14.77 come boldly. " >> That's right. > I love that because it says, 00:03:14.80\00:03:19.77 "Let us come boldly to the Throne of Grace," which means if 00:03:19.80\00:03:22.11 I... if... if... if I am to go somewhere boldly, it's like 00:03:22.14\00:03:24.93 I've got a plan, I'm not intimidated, >> That's right. 00:03:24.96\00:03:28.25 > you know, I'm not threatened, I mean, I feel pretty good about 00:03:28.28\00:03:30.92 myself and the point is it's not that you're anything, Christ is 00:03:30.95\00:03:34.70 everything but >> That's right. > you can come boldly because 00:03:34.73\00:03:37.41 there's a real answer and there's real power. In other 00:03:37.44\00:03:42.03 words, we don't have to be intimidated by coming to Jesus. 00:03:42.06\00:03:44.97 So anyway, I just think that captures, when you just said 00:03:45.00\00:03:48.05 that "How could Jesus be tempted in all points and yet not 00:03:48.08\00:03:51.23 sinned," and then verse 16 says, 00:03:51.26\00:03:53.65 >> That's right. > I just think that's so >> No where > neat 00:04:03.05\00:04:04.07 better to go for help than the one who has been where we are, 00:04:04.10\00:04:07.74 according to text > Yes. >> and has never fallen. > Absolutely. 00:04:09.30\00:04:10.66 >> That's the point. >>> But don't you think, Pastor, that 00:04:10.69\00:04:12.72 people, I mean, what do you do with them when they say, 00:04:12.75\00:04:15.70 "How... how could he be tempted in all points like we was?" I 00:04:15.73\00:04:19.78 mean, they... they didn't have the temptations that we do, 00:04:19.81\00:04:21.97 Jesus didn't have cocaine and video games and... and >> Right. 00:04:22.00\00:04:26.96 >>> and all these things. I mean, how could he be tempted in 00:04:27.69\00:04:30.30 all points like we? >> Yeah, and that's the... that's the 00:04:30.33\00:04:33.50 question that comes up. That's where people say, "How could it 00:04:33.53\00:04:35.66 be?" and... and I want us to notice that the... the passage 00:04:35.69\00:04:39.21 says, "He's tempted not in every temptation like we are but in 00:04:39.24\00:04:43.11 all points like we are " and I want you to go past the Book 00:04:43.14\00:04:47.62 of Hebrews to the next book in the Bible, > OK >> the Book of 00:04:47.65\00:04:49.88 James and I'm sorry not... not to James. We're going to keep on 00:04:49.91\00:04:53.38 going to the Book of 1st John, Chapter 2 > OK. >> and so right 00:04:53.41\00:04:59.93 before > 1st John >> the end there > Chapter 2 >> Yeah. 1st 00:04:59.96\00:05:02.76 John. 1st, 2nd, 3rd John, Jude then Revelation and right there 00:05:02.79\00:05:06.76 toward the end, we're going to 1st John 2 and we're going to 00:05:06.79\00:05:09.58 look at verse 15 and John write something interesting here. 00:05:09.61\00:05:12.80 He says, 00:05:14.61\00:05:15.58 > UH-HMM 00:05:19.17\00:05:20.14 >>> Amen. 00:05:37.54\00:05:38.51 >> So John sums up, what he call, all that's in the world, 00:05:39.62\00:05:40.59 all the sinful things in the world, he sums up in three 00:05:40.60\00:05:42.70 points. > Yes. >> Now, what's really fascinating about this is 00:05:42.73\00:05:45.85 when we go to the experience of Jesus and we look at his 00:05:45.88\00:05:49.41 temptation when he was on the Earth, when he was tempted in 00:05:49.44\00:05:51.75 the wilderness, how many points of temptation, do you remember? 00:05:51.78\00:05:54.42 > Three. >> There were three points of temptation and I think 00:05:54.60\00:05:59.22 we need to go there and look at that in the Book of Matthew. 00:05:59.25\00:06:01.45 > If that's a good idea and so what you're saying >> and > what 00:06:01.48\00:06:03.53 you're saying right now is that in 1st John Chapter 2, in verse 00:06:03.56\00:06:11.22 you know, 15 and 16 >> Yeah > basically 16, "For all that is 00:06:11.25\00:06:16.49 in the world," I mean really, I mean it is saying that, for all, 00:06:16.52\00:06:21.12 not for some of it, for most >> That's right > of it, for 00:06:21.15\00:06:23.65 nearly all of it, it's saying "For all that is in the world, 00:06:23.68\00:06:25.65 the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of 00:06:25.68\00:06:28.58 life is not of the Father but is of the world. " So... so... 00:06:28.61\00:06:31.34 you... what you're doing is we're going to go to Matthew is, 00:06:31.37\00:06:34.22 correlating that there really is three points or three principles 00:06:34.25\00:06:38.25 of... of the devil getting to us. >>> Or three categories, 00:06:38.28\00:06:43.04 like > Categories. >> like three categories that all people come 00:06:43.07\00:06:47.24 under >> Right. >>> temptation in our lives. >> And we count up 00:06:47.27\00:06:48.52 temptation, how many temptations are there? I mean, millions. 00:06:48.55\00:06:51.20 > Yeah. >> So what do we, I mean, so how do you sum that 00:06:51.23\00:06:54.77 up? Well, the Bible sums it up, John sums it up and says, "There 00:06:54.80\00:06:57.04 are millions of temptations but they all fall into one of three 00:06:57.07\00:07:00.18 categories," and I know that may seem like a stretch but as we 00:07:00.19\00:07:02.71 discuss this a little more, we're going to see that every 00:07:02.74\00:07:04.84 temptation man can face falls into one of the categories 00:07:04.87\00:07:07.72 > Yeah >> that John listed, lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes 00:07:07.75\00:07:09.76 and the pride of life and so and maybe we should, as we go, we're 00:07:09.79\00:07:14.34 going to go to Matthew 4, to Jesus temptation. > OK. 00:07:14.37\00:07:16.67 >> But let's just... a couple of things to clear up, when we read 00:07:16.70\00:07:19.35 lust or we think the word lust, a lot of times, we think about 00:07:19.38\00:07:22.75 you know, sexual temptation, that kind of thing but the word 00:07:22.76\00:07:26.34 is... literally means desire and so it's the desires of the 00:07:26.37\00:07:30.25 flesh, that means bodily desires. That doesn't only have 00:07:30.28\00:07:33.50 to do with urges for sex which is included there but also for 00:07:33.53\00:07:36.93 hunger, for thirst, bodily desires for sleep which in and 00:07:36.96\00:07:41.78 of themselves aren't all wrong but that's where those 00:07:41.81\00:07:45.04 temptations will pull at us. Temptations of the body > Yes. 00:07:45.07\00:07:48.60 >> lust of the flesh. > Absolutely. >> lust of the 00:07:48.63\00:07:50.56 eyes or desires of the eyes, those are things that draw us 00:07:50.59\00:07:53.04 out in covetousness or draw us out to... to want things that 00:07:53.07\00:07:56.58 lead us to, you know, disobeying God and then there is the... the 00:07:56.61\00:08:02.28 pride of life. Those are the things that appeal to our... our 00:08:02.31\00:08:06.16 reputation and... and you know, our... our ambition and those 00:08:06.19\00:08:10.55 kinds of temptations and so as we look > Yeah. >> at the 00:08:10.58\00:08:13.48 temptation of Jesus and we have some discussion. I mean, we can 00:08:13.51\00:08:15.98 discuss > Well, and too... I was thinking too that... to make a 00:08:16.01\00:08:21.71 whole being for anyone whether man or woman, it's really to 00:08:21.74\00:08:30.13 me, based upon the three things too. It's... it's body, mind or 00:08:30.16\00:08:32.85 soul >> UH-HUH > not or body, mind and soul, are physical, 00:08:32.88\00:08:36.57 mental and spiritual >> MM-HMM. > and it's amazing that the 00:08:36.60\00:08:40.89 devil... the devil knows how to work on the human being. I mean, 00:08:40.92\00:08:45.69 he knew from creation. It's a physical, mental and spiritual 00:08:45.72\00:08:51.79 and that's what makes up the whole being. That's what Christ 00:08:51.82\00:08:54.29 is trying to restore. He's trying to restore our physical, 00:08:54.32\00:08:56.60 our mental and our spiritual. >> That's right. > I think 00:08:56.63\00:08:59.93 that's tremendous. >> And we see that in those points. > Yes. 00:08:59.97\00:09:02.81 >> and so when we're reading in Hebrews, all points like we are, 00:09:02.84\00:09:05.62 that doesn't mean he was tempted with crack cocaine necessarily 00:09:05.63\00:09:07.97 or > Right. >> something like that. He was wasn't tempted with 00:09:08.00\00:09:10.01 video games but there's a point that summarize that video games, 00:09:10.04\00:09:14.26 there's a category that it falls into > Yeah. >> Jesus was 00:09:14.29\00:09:16.48 tempted with and we'll find that temptation was every bit as 00:09:16.60\00:09:19.23 powerful as any we've ever experienced > OK. >> and we'll 00:09:19.26\00:09:22.36 pick it up in Matthew 4 and just the first several verses there 00:09:22.44\00:09:26.43 give us this account. Matthew 4, verse 1, says, 00:09:26.46\00:09:29.84 > UH-HMM 00:09:43.98\00:09:44.95 >> So there's our first temptation and his response. 00:09:52.81\00:09:54.96 > And... and the first one is the first principle but it's to 00:09:54.99\00:09:58.18 do with the physical. >> That's right. > You're saying it has to 00:09:58.21\00:10:00.55 do with the physical body. So man, you can take millions of 00:10:00.69\00:10:03.90 temptations just under that alone >> Right. >>> and this one 00:10:03.93\00:10:07.05 was hunger. > Hunger. >>> was the first one. >> It was... one 00:10:07.08\00:10:09.82 of the... it... it would >>> Lust >> be lust of the 00:10:09.85\00:10:11.37 flesh. >>> Lust of the flesh, yeah, which would include 00:10:12.40\00:10:14.28 thousands of temptations. >>That's right, for example, if 00:10:14.31\00:10:18.89 a person... the person who struggles from a drug addiction, 00:10:18.92\00:10:22.12 now, I don't have a drug addiction and so I may not 00:10:22.15\00:10:26.25 relate to that but I may have an addiction in another area of the 00:10:26.28\00:10:30.09 flesh. The root is the same >> Yes. >> and so when a person 00:10:30.12\00:10:34.41 struggles under a lust to the flesh that may not be the exact 00:10:34.44\00:10:37.19 same temptation but the draw at... at... at the human being 00:10:37.22\00:10:41.96 to sin, is the same pole. It's the same pole they're 00:10:41.99\00:10:45.79 experiencing when Jesus went 40 days without food and it was 00:10:45.82\00:10:48.70 that draw at his hunger, it was the same root level temptation. 00:10:48.71\00:10:52.27 > And... and isn't it amazing that the very first temptation 00:10:52.30\00:10:56.73 of... of Adam and Eve, physical. >> That's rigtht > Now, it 00:10:56.76\00:11:00.99 wasn't, "turn these stones into bread. " >> That's right. 00:11:01.02\00:11:03.11 > They weren't hungry, they had all that they wanted but it was 00:11:03.14\00:11:06.07 still physical. The first thing was that physical part. 00:11:06.10\00:11:08.45 So I think that's tremendous, so... 00:11:08.48\00:11:10.48 ...so here's Christ being tempted with physical 00:11:10.51\00:11:12.82 first, Adam and Eve being tempted, physical first. So 00:11:12.85\00:11:16.21 physical has a lot to do with it. It's like we've only got 00:11:16.24\00:11:18.44 about 40 seconds more to go, so make your last point. 00:11:18.56\00:11:22.11 >>> There can be multiple temptations in one temptation, 00:11:22.14\00:11:25.93 is that correct? In other words > Sure, absolutely. >> Yeah. 00:11:25.96\00:11:28.46 >>> there could be with the hunger and the pride with 00:11:28.49\00:11:32.63 Jesus. >> Yeah. >>> You know, he was hungry but then he's also 00:11:32.66\00:11:36.14 tempting if you are the son of God then do this. So there's 00:11:38.87\00:11:40.63 pride mixed in >> That's right. We're going to see that >>> with 00:11:40.66\00:11:43.32 hunger. >> as we go through the rest of > Yeah >>these 00:11:43.35\00:11:44.39 temptations but it's going to still be one of those three 00:11:44.42\00:11:46.78 categories. > Wow! That is really neat. Well! Boy! Time 00:11:46.81\00:11:50.87 fast. We're going to have to take a quick break. Don't go 00:11:50.90\00:11:53.89 away, we've got two more temptations to go through and 00:11:53.92\00:11:57.02 you'll see that all these will parallel your issues. I'm sure, 00:11:57.05\00:12:02.36 it certainly does mine and you won't want to miss it. Don't go 00:12:02.39\00:12:07.23 away, we'll be right back. 00:12:07.26\00:12:08.31 >>>> Hi. This is so exciting to me, 00:15:36.10\00:15:38.75 Pastor Mark and Rudy. The temptations of Christ. Three 00:15:38.92\00:15:42.85 which covers really all temptations. >> That's right. 00:15:42.88\00:15:47.23 > The principles and this first one that we covered before the 00:15:47.26\00:15:49.80 break was appetite and... and I was just thinking about appetite 00:15:49.83\00:15:53.70 in America >> Yeah. > more than any other part of the world. We 00:15:53.73\00:15:58.40 We have a... a... an epidemic and it's on the flesh. >> That's 00:15:58.43\00:16:02.71 > I mean, it's... it's an appetite and we... we got a 00:16:02.74\00:16:05.59 problem here. So the devil has, I think had since this... since 00:16:05.62\00:16:10.32 the New Testament here, 4,000 years of... of perfecting the 00:16:10.35\00:16:16.68 temptation of the physical appetite >> Yeah. > which is a 00:16:16.71\00:16:19.34 huge one >> Yeah, yeah, yeah. > and I think that's of course 00:16:19.37\00:16:21.16 why it was the first one. >> Absolutely, absolutely and 00:16:21.19\00:16:24.38 in... in fact, we want to spend a little bit of time fleshing 00:16:24.41\00:16:28.47 that out > Yeah. >> no pun intended but > Right. >> Really 00:16:28.50\00:16:31.16 talking about that and look at... but first, we want to 00:16:31.19\00:16:34.01 look through the passage of the next > Yeah. >> two temptations 00:16:34.04\00:16:36.23 just... kind of get an overview here. > OK. >> We see the lust 00:16:36.26\00:16:39.62 of the flesh there. Now, as we go on in Chapter 4, verse 5, 00:16:39.65\00:16:43.37 of Matthew, it says, 00:16:43.40\00:16:44.37 > Using scripture, we better know our scriptures. >> That's 00:17:01.21\00:17:03.35 right. > A lot like Isaiah says, "here a little, there a little, 00:17:03.38\00:17:06.48 line upon line, precept upon precept. " To balance out, we 00:17:06.51\00:17:10.21 can't just take one or two texts >> That's right. > and that's... 00:17:10.24\00:17:12.45 a lot of Christians will do that. They'll make one 00:17:12.48\00:17:14.04 text there, great principle and leave other ones undone. 00:17:14.07\00:17:17.55 >> That's right. > So the devil, I mean, that's a scriptural 00:17:17.58\00:17:19.74 text. >> Well, yeah and he leads him to the presumption. What we 00:17:19.77\00:17:22.31 see here in this temptation is, we looked at the lust of the 00:17:22.34\00:17:26.67 flesh. Here we see the pride of life, the temptation is, "if 00:17:26.70\00:17:29.89 you're the son of God, prove it. " > Yeah. >> Prove yourself 00:17:29.92\00:17:32.06 and what's going to happen. You know, of course we're going to 00:17:32.09\00:17:34.75 see the next one there but he... he basically tempts him to 00:17:34.78\00:17:38.31 presumption > Yeah. >> Presumption comes from pride. 00:17:38.34\00:17:42.75 > Yeah >> We're wanting to... it leads us to us to act on 00:17:42.78\00:17:44.90 something that God hasn't said because of what, you know, we 00:17:44.93\00:17:47.26 want or some self agrandisement we can get and we... of course, 00:17:47.29\00:17:51.11 we'll discuss that in a moment and then it says, in verse 8, we 00:17:51.14\00:17:54.40 come to the third temptation, it says, 00:17:54.43\00:17:55.71 Now, it says on the Gospel of Luke, when it gives 00:18:07.36\00:18:09.08 this, it says, he showed him all the Kingdoms of the World 00:18:09.11\00:18:11.39 in a moment of time. > HMM. >> So the implication is not 00:18:11.42\00:18:13.86 just the kingdoms then but all through the future. > Yeah. 00:18:13.89\00:18:17.23 >> All the glory and power he could ever have. He was 00:18:17.26\00:18:19.52 appealing also to his pride, like in the last one but the 00:18:19.55\00:18:22.68 lust of the eyes, the desire of all that you can have, if you'll 00:18:22.71\00:18:25.99 just worship me what the devil says, you know, and we see that 00:18:26.02\00:18:30.10 temptation going around today. The devil offering people, all 00:18:30.13\00:18:33.35 kinds of things. > Right. >> Material possessions if 00:18:33.38\00:18:35.77 they'll only compromise spiritual principles. > And... 00:18:35.80\00:18:38.59 and I think too, that... that... that... that it helps me to 00:18:38.62\00:18:43.70 understand this and hope for the viewers that, don't think that 00:18:43.73\00:18:49.18 the devil isn't going to work a lot harder in our Christian 00:18:49.21\00:18:51.96 walk. >> That's right. > This... this was about... he was saying 00:18:51.99\00:18:55.84 this just to let... I think you mentioned it, Rudy when we're 00:18:55.87\00:18:59.25 talking before that, you don't have to go through all of these 00:18:59.28\00:19:04.00 crucifixion. >>> Yeah, he offered it to him on a silver 00:19:04.03\00:19:06.36 platter. > Yeah. >>> but without... without going through 00:19:06.39\00:19:08.99 anything else and also, you know, what... what brings to my 00:19:09.02\00:19:13.36 mind is Christ is, you know, how intelligent is Christ? I mean, 00:19:13.39\00:19:19.45 more... more than anybody else >> Yeah. 00:19:19.48\00:19:21.60 >>> and he didn't pull from his resources. He didn't get into a big 00:20:48.47\00:20:50.77 argument with the devil like we always do and try to justify, so 00:20:50.80\00:20:54.24 the devil tempts us and we say, "OK, well," we try to work 00:20:54.27\00:20:57.95 out some deal with him, you know where we try to 00:20:57.98\00:20:59.94 justify whatever > Right. He never sinned. Therefore, for this 00:24:00.91\00:24:04.90 reason, we can come boldly to the throne of grace, we can find 00:24:04.93\00:24:08.14 that grace to help in times > That's right. >> of need 00:24:08.17\00:24:09.79 > That's right >> because Jesus knows how it's done >> And how 00:24:09.82\00:24:12.86 can >> and he knows how that works. >> And how can we believe 00:24:12.89\00:24:14.43 that? Because it is written. >> That's right. > That right 00:24:14.46\00:24:16.71 >> It is written and... and that's another good point when 00:24:16.74\00:24:19.54 the Bible says, you know, sometimes we may wrestle with 00:24:19.57\00:24:21.43 this and say,"Well, how, you know, I don't understand still. 00:24:21.46\00:24:24.43 How is he tempted, just like me? How is the temptation as great 00:24:24.46\00:24:28.37 as the temptations I face?" Because that's what the Word 00:24:28.40\00:24:31.27 tells us. He was tempted in all points > Right. >> as we are yet 00:24:31.30\00:24:34.68 without sin. We should take hope and confidence in that >>> Amen. 00:24:34.71\00:24:37.20 > Amen. >>> Amen. >> that wow! This is telling me that through 00:24:37.23\00:24:39.68 Jesus, I can face these temptations. If I'm submitted to 00:24:39.71\00:24:43.30 him, I can resist the devil. He'll flee from me too and 00:24:43.33\00:24:46.49 angels will administer to you and me as we seek to do the will 00:24:46.52\00:24:49.17 of God > That's right >> in our lives. > Absolutely. 00:24:49.20\00:24:50.84 >>> And isn't that why we have also stories like Job?
