I'm glad that you could join us again for another edition of 00:00:17.87\00:00:20.93 Bible Alive. Today, we got another good 00:00:20.96\00:00:23.43 story. It's found in John Chapter 2 and and I'm going to 00:00:23.46\00:00:28.64 let you explain that, Mark. Exactly what is John Chapter 2? 00:00:28.67\00:00:29.64 Well, Dwight, John Chapter 2, we're going to read about the 00:00:29.65\00:00:33.75 Wedding Feast of Cana OK where Jesus, in fact, performs 00:00:33.78\00:00:37.42 his first miracle in the Bible and there's a lot of lessons 00:00:37.45\00:00:41.02 we're going to see in that particular story, one of which 00:00:41.05\00:00:43.76 has to do with really what kind of wine Jesus made because this 00:00:43.79\00:00:49.10 is a kind of a controversial subject here in the Wedding 00:00:49.13\00:00:52.53 Feast of Cana. A lot of people will look at it and say contrary 00:00:52.56\00:00:55.82 to Old Testament teachings that Jesus promoted the use of 00:00:55.85\00:00:58.64 alcoholic wine. So that's going to be a part of what what we 00:00:58.67\00:01:01.14 cover today. OK And what else? Anything else? 00:01:01.17\00:01:03.51 Well we'll talk about Mary maybe a little bit. Yeh, we're 00:01:03.54\00:01:06.23 going to talk about Mary a little and her relation to 00:01:06.26\00:01:08.86 Jesus. Was Mary- did the Bible put Mary on an equality 00:01:08.89\00:01:12.58 with Jesus or in a superior position where some 00:01:12.61\00:01:16.41 religions do today? Is that something we can find in 00:01:16.44\00:01:19.11 the Bible? Well, I think the Wedding 00:01:19.14\00:01:21.22 Feast of Cana answers that. You know, these stories are so neat, 00:01:21.25\00:01:24.77 aren't they? I mean, they're stories, they are just short, 00:01:24.80\00:01:26.97 what I'd call 'very short stories', and yet they have such 00:01:27.00\00:01:30.33 deep meaning in them. Yeh well, short as they are, we never seem 00:01:30.36\00:01:33.81 to get through all of them No in our time together so we got to 00:01:33.84\00:01:37.28 get going. Yeh. So, get your Bibles. John Chapter 2, and open 00:01:37.31\00:01:41.68 there. Before we start, we'll have a prayer but open John 00:01:41.71\00:01:45.06 Chapter 2. A great story and it should clear some things up for 00:01:45.09\00:01:51.70 you if you have questions about wine or if you have questions 00:01:51.73\00:01:55.01 about Mary in her role with Christ. So I hope that you're 00:01:55.04\00:01:59.84 in your book, before we start, let's have a word of 00:01:59.87\00:02:01.80 prayer. Would you bow your heads with me. Father in heaven, what 00:02:01.83\00:02:05.70 again, a pleasure it is to pray to the one that knows all things 00:02:05.73\00:02:12.23 uh hmm So Father, I'd ask that you would be with us today. 00:02:12.26\00:02:16.10 You would send Your Holy Spirit and in a double measure. You 00:02:16.13\00:02:19.06 would work upon our hearts as we speak, they would not be our 00:02:19.09\00:02:22.50 words. And then Father, we'd also ask that you would touch 00:02:22.53\00:02:25.43 the people's hearts that are viewing today. That you would 00:02:25.46\00:02:28.07 guide their hearts, open their hearts to receive truth as 00:02:28.10\00:02:31.42 it is in Jesus and I pray these things in the precious 00:02:31.45\00:02:34.25 and Holy name of Jesus and in faith, Amen. Amen. 00:02:34.28\00:02:38.03 OK. Let's get started. OK. Well the story is found in 00:02:38.06\00:02:43.25 John Chapter 2,right there OK in the first verse. 00:02:43.28\00:02:45.94 Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, its the fourth Gospel in the 00:02:45.97\00:02:49.03 New Testament and theñ my Bible says "water turns 00:02:49.06\00:02:52.73 to wine," Water turns to wine it says right there. OK. 00:02:52.76\00:02:54.94 Yeh, and so if you are using the Remnant Study Bible, 00:02:54.97\00:02:57.90 you'll find that on page 1254 and the first verse begins 00:02:57.93\00:03:02.88 this way 00:03:02.91\00:03:03.88 Now, a little bit of background here, most scholars 00:03:19.22\00:03:22.18 understand as they read through this passage 00:03:22.21\00:03:24.32 that these- Mary evidently had a role to play in this 00:03:24.35\00:03:29.05 particular wedding. Probably, it was family of hers yeh 00:03:29.08\00:03:31.88 that she felt a little responsibility there. It wasn't 00:03:31.91\00:03:35.34 just like they ran out of wine during the feast. And also, 00:03:35.37\00:03:38.37 these feast-rite would take, generally, many days. Yeh 00:03:38.40\00:03:44.23 People would come together, they'd travel. It wasn't 00:03:44.26\00:03:45.23 just like getting in your car and driving somewhereñ it 00:03:45.24\00:03:46.51 wasn't like a 15-minute Right. Sermon xxx "You may 00:03:46.54\00:03:49.42 kiss the bride" and you know, that's right then they 00:03:49.45\00:03:51.92 have a little or a big whatever, reception. But even 00:03:51.95\00:03:55.43 that's maybe two or three hours. Yeh This is like days yeh 00:03:55.46\00:03:58.47 and the time people took to travel, you know they 00:03:58.50\00:04:00.67 came from great distances, and so you know, they just 00:04:00.70\00:04:03.70 made it a festive occasion and evidently, Mary had a 00:04:03.73\00:04:08.32 responsibility in planning this out and right there in the 00:04:08.35\00:04:12.06 midst of the feast, they ran out of wine, which was 00:04:12.09\00:04:15.78 something that would be considered very unhospitable 00:04:15.81\00:04:18.51 one putting on the feast and so she brings her concern to 00:04:18.54\00:04:21.94 Jesus in Verse 4. OK. The Bible says, Jesus says- you know she 00:04:21.97\00:04:25.94 says to him I- rather in verse 3 00:04:25.97\00:04:27.36 Now, there's a lot we could say about that. First and foremost, 00:04:35.92\00:04:39.90 I think when people read that, the language of it puts people 00:04:39.93\00:04:44.43 off right away. I mean, it almost sounds very rude. 00:04:44.46\00:04:47.03 "Woman, what are you telling me this for?" you know. 00:04:47.06\00:04:49.44 "Woman, leave me alone. " You know, "Woman" It's 00:04:49.47\00:04:52.02 not really the kind of way you would That would fly. I 00:04:52.05\00:04:54.90 couldn't even get away with saying 'woman' like that to 00:04:54.93\00:04:58.15 my wife and she's pretty good about that stuff. But yet, 00:04:58.18\00:05:00.90 in this case, it wasn't a derogatory remark. No, it 00:05:00.93\00:05:04.63 sounds that way to us but if you really- if you would 00:05:04.66\00:05:06.99 read this in Greek and understand the culture and the 00:05:07.02\00:05:09.20 way Right that they used to - the verbiage there, Jesus 00:05:09.23\00:05:11.68 was actually speaking very respectfully to his Mother. 00:05:11.71\00:05:13.74 OK. I think we need to keep in mind that Jesus said in 00:05:13.77\00:05:16.33 John Chapter 15:10, "I have kept my father's 00:05:16.36\00:05:18.83 commandments. " In other words, He didn't break the 00:05:18.86\00:05:21.57 commandment that says, "Honor your Father and 00:05:21.60\00:05:22.99 Mother" here when he was dealing with his Mother. He 00:05:23.02\00:05:24.50 was always respectful. So sometimes we read things 00:05:24.53\00:05:26.43 and to us it may appear one way, but Jesus was being 00:05:26.46\00:05:29.37 very respectful to his Mother here. That's why we need 00:05:29.40\00:05:31.56 to really study and get in there, and if you could hold 00:05:31.59\00:05:35.62 your finger there and just go to John Chapter 19 very 00:05:35.65\00:05:38.27 quickly, just to give you a You know, that's why the 00:05:38.30\00:05:41.36 Bible says here a little, there a little, line upon line, 00:05:41.39\00:05:43.03 precept upon precept. In other words, you can't just 00:05:43.06\00:05:46.54 take one text and build your mountain out of it. Right 00:05:46.57\00:05:49.15 And that's why there's so many different religions 00:05:49.18\00:05:50.79 because we'll take a section or one portion, build the 00:05:50.82\00:05:53.81 whole thing, but we got to go with the yeh whole- with 00:05:53.84\00:05:56.28 the whole Bible, here a little, there a little. And if you 00:05:56.31\00:05:58.42 go to John 19, it says, it's about when Jesus was on the 00:05:58.45\00:06:01.90 cross, Mark. And in verse 26 it says 00:06:01.93\00:06:05.56 which was John 00:06:09.50\00:06:10.55 yeh I mean, you know, that was certainly not 00:06:14.79\00:06:16.79 derogatory then. Right I mean, it was a kind thing and 00:06:16.82\00:06:19.00 then he says and he addresses her in the same way as yeh and 00:06:19.03\00:06:21.07 In other words, he even on the cross, he was looking out for 00:06:23.33\00:06:26.39 his Mother. That's right. And so that was certainly not a- I 00:06:26.42\00:06:29.40 mean, he was very respectful when he said that. That's right. 00:06:29.43\00:06:31.40 Now another important point is, though he was respectful, 00:06:31.43\00:06:34.53 it's very clear here that Mary didn't dictate to Jesus his 00:06:34.56\00:06:39.01 Ministry. Yes he was respectful but he knew he was 00:06:39.04\00:06:41.95 called by his Father. You know, like when he was 00:06:41.98\00:06:44.07 found in the temple. He told his Parents Right 00:06:44.10\00:06:45.49 respectfully, "Didn't you know I would be about my 00:06:45.52\00:06:46.81 Father's business?" Business he wanted to establish in 00:06:46.84\00:06:49.78 their minds that as much as he had love and respect for 00:06:49.81\00:06:53.01 them, he had a higher calling and I think- I think 00:06:53.04\00:06:56.00 that's another tremendous point. There's so many 00:06:56.03\00:06:58.73 points and I can see it's such a small - you know, it's 00:06:58.76\00:07:02.54 not very many text but there's so many things in there 00:07:02.57\00:07:05.86 and I believe that's something you ought to write down 00:07:05.89\00:07:07.82 that's so important. If God is calling you - you know, 00:07:07.85\00:07:12.85 you're the one that's got to - every one of us have to 00:07:12.88\00:07:15.10 answer, not to our spouses, not to our Parents I mean, 00:07:15.13\00:07:18.74 we need to answer to our Parents if we're young 00:07:18.77\00:07:20.37 because we're like God, taking God's place when the 00:07:20.40\00:07:22.99 kids are young, which means we need to really have a 00:07:23.02\00:07:25.42 connection with God. uh hmm But when we're older 00:07:25.45\00:07:27.03 and if God calls us, just like God's called me into this 00:07:27.06\00:07:30.57 Ministry, he called you into the Ministry, and I'm sure 00:07:30.60\00:07:32.67 many of you he's called into the Ministry. That calling 00:07:32.70\00:07:35.21 is to him first. That's right. and that's what Jesus was 00:07:35.24\00:07:37.98 establishing In fact, there's a statement which I love, in 00:07:38.01\00:07:41.03 the Remnant Study Bible. In Desire of Ages it says, 00:07:41.06\00:07:43.93 uh hmm and I have that people, including my wife, at times, 00:07:58.76\00:08:02.23 which we won't get into that. But when I started to run 00:08:02.26\00:08:04.89 the publications, you know, we've had some tough 00:08:04.92\00:08:07.34 times at Remnant throughout the years and sometimes 00:08:07.37\00:08:10.71 Deb has asked me, "Dwight, you know, if God has 00:08:10.74\00:08:14.98 called you then you ought to be doing this, this, and 00:08:15.01\00:08:16.75 that. " I mean yeh and those things she's saying is not 00:08:16.78\00:08:19.15 from being selfish but from her eyesight and yet for 00:08:19.18\00:08:21.74 me, when I get on my knees, the Lord says, "My Grace 00:08:21.77\00:08:24.03 is sufficient for you and you are called by me, and you 00:08:24.06\00:08:27.19 keep your head and your eyes straight towards me. " 00:08:27.22\00:08:30.16 So we need to make sure that's important. God's claim 00:08:30.19\00:08:32.57 are paramount and he had to make sure that... He had 00:08:32.60\00:08:36.13 been obedient for like 30 years yeh with his Mother 00:08:36.16\00:08:38.58 and now he realize or she needed to realize "My 00:08:38.61\00:08:42.23 calling is with my Father, not with you. " That's right. 00:08:42.26\00:08:44.09 And so, as much as he showed that respect to her for 00:08:44.12\00:08:46.83 her position, never do we find in the Bible where Mary 00:08:46.86\00:08:50.21 is put on a level of equality with Jesus. Yes, that's 00:08:50.24\00:08:53.43 right and where Jesus points to Mary, it wasn't - 00:08:53.46\00:08:56.94 Mary herself had to subject herself That's right to his 00:08:56.97\00:09:00.18 authority and the Father's authority. Absolutely. That's- 00:09:00.21\00:09:02.69 That's paramount. That's tremendous because there are 00:09:02.72\00:09:07.18 religions, there are people that hold Mary almost equal 00:09:07.21\00:09:12.42 with Christ That's right and she was not equal with 00:09:12.45\00:09:14.56 Christ. She played a- an important part. She was a 00:09:14.59\00:09:16.11 good woman. Yes She's a righteous woman, very 00:09:16.14\00:09:17.79 clearly, but she was like any other follower of God. 00:09:17.82\00:09:21.58 That's right. That's right. She will come up in the 00:09:21.61\00:09:23.58 second and the first resurrection. God willing, when 00:09:23.61\00:09:27.31 that day comes, for sure, she- and you know, we 00:09:27.34\00:09:31.42 receive her inheritance. That's right. She'll be there. 00:09:31.45\00:09:33.12 OK. We got to take a quick break. Time goes just too 00:09:33.15\00:09:37.02 quickly but I know that you'll want to stay with us 00:09:37.05\00:09:40.17 because we've got some other things in here that's 00:09:40.20\00:09:42.79 vitally important. So don't go away because we'll be 00:09:42.82\00:09:45.31 right back. 00:09:45.34\00:09:46.31 The first labor day holiday was celebrated to honor 00:09:49.10\00:09:51.28 America's labor force. A huge parade was held on 00:09:51.31\00:09:54.51 September 5, 1882 in New York City, since then no 00:09:54.54\00:09:57.98 working man or woman in North America has ever 00:09:58.01\00:10:00.28 forgotten about it. He even blessed 00:10:18.76\00:10:22.20 that day; setting it apart as Holy for all time and 00:10:22.23\00:10:25.85 called it The Sabbath. It's a weekly celebration when 00:10:25.88\00:10:28.67 we get to spend special time with Jesus. Will you accept the 00:12:42.46\00:12:46.65 challenge to become part of God's Last Day Army? 00:12:46.68\00:12:49.15 Equip yourself today. 00:12:49.18\00:12:51.49 Have you ever wondered why some married couples 00:13:24.79\00:13:27.30 seem to look alike especially when they have been 00:13:27.33\00:13:29.22 together for a long time? Studies have shown that there 00:13:29.25\00:13:32.19 is real evidence as to why couples, who have been 00:13:32.22\00:13:34.31 married for a long time, tend to look similar to each 00:13:34.34\00:13:36.80 other. According to research, the increase in facial 00:13:36.83\00:13:39.94 similarity results from decade of shared emotions. This 00:13:39.97\00:13:44.21 happens because of something called mimicry. When 00:13:44.24\00:13:47.21 couples have spent many years together and they have 00:13:47.24\00:13:49.40 shared thousands of smiles and frowns, their facial 00:13:49.43\00:13:52.01 muscles start to take on similar patterns to each other. 00:13:52.04\00:13:55.19 It's also common to mimic each other's habits, which 00:13:55.22\00:13:58.24 emphasizes physical similarities and isn't it interesting 00:13:58.27\00:14:01.31 to see how some people would look a lot like their 00:14:01.34\00:14:03.66 pets. God tells us in his word that by beholding, we 00:14:03.69\00:14:07.81 become changed. Every day we are faced with choices, 00:14:07.84\00:14:11.03 what we eat, who we spend time with, where we go 00:14:11.06\00:14:13.93 and what we do, what we listen to and what we look at. 00:14:13.96\00:14:17.18 All of these things have an impact on us and over time 00:14:17.21\00:14:20.58 they can and will shape the person that we are. The 00:14:20.61\00:14:24.62 scriptures says, 00:14:24.65\00:14:25.62 If we make the Bible our guide, we will be the person 00:14:35.61\00:14:39.48 God has designed us to be. 00:14:39.51\00:14:41.02 Back again with Jesus and the miracle, the first miracle 00:14:43.19\00:14:48.90 of the wine and we just learned some things, Pastor, 00:14:48.93\00:14:53.73 about Mary and about That's right what was going on 00:14:53.76\00:14:57.17 in her mind and how the call that you have of God is- 00:14:57.20\00:15:00.81 take- actually takes precedence of anything else. That's 00:15:00.84\00:15:05.01 right. And that we can't just take one little text here and 00:15:05.04\00:15:07.33 there, it's everything. But the next step that we want to 00:15:07.36\00:15:10.07 learn right now is - I think the wine. What kind of wine 00:15:10.10\00:15:12.15 was it? Was that- you know, it's amazing. Jesus started 00:15:12.18\00:15:15.55 his Ministry with wine. Right here, this was his first 00:15:15.58\00:15:19.84 miracle Yeh he ended his Ministry with wine. That's 00:15:19.87\00:15:23.26 right You know the Last Supper and you know, for 00:15:23.29\00:15:25.01 people, to me, for people to think that he was creating 00:15:25.04\00:15:28.83 and drinking fermented wine, it's like, "What a 00:15:28.86\00:15:31.32 drunkard. " "He started being drunk and he ended 00:15:31.35\00:15:33.04 being a drunk. " I mean, we know better than that. 00:15:33.07\00:15:35.13 That's true. It's almost sacrilegious to say it but the 00:15:35.16\00:15:37.91 point is that we know that's not true. Yeh So why is 00:15:37.94\00:15:40.67 that we have such a problem You know, I don't think 00:15:40.70\00:15:42.81 people with this wine thing? I don't think people - 00:15:42.84\00:15:43.93 process it as much. Maybe we should read here. OK. 00:15:43.96\00:15:46.48 You know, we talked about the subservience of Mary 00:15:46.51\00:15:48.73 to her son and we see that in Verse 5 of OK John 00:15:48.76\00:15:51.91 Chapter 2. Once again, if you're just tuning in, Page 00:15:51.94\00:15:55.19 1254 in the Remnant Study Bible and John Chapter 2 00:15:55.22\00:16:01.30 verse 5 00:16:01.33\00:16:02.44 Do it 00:16:06.66\00:16:07.63 She- she put herself in a subservient position and 00:16:07.64\00:16:09.87 expressed explicit trust in whatever Jesus decided 00:16:09.90\00:16:13.89 would be proper to do. Yeh He just told her the time 00:16:13.92\00:16:16.74 had not come. Now, Verse 6. It says, 00:16:16.77\00:16:20.25 And you know, this is fascinating. There's so much we 00:16:39.29\00:16:42.74 could talk about here. I think it's fascinating that they're- 00:16:42.81\00:16:46.52 these guys just filled the pots. It's water. You're going to 00:16:46.55\00:16:50.26 take some to the Master of the feast. 00:16:50.29\00:16:51.66 Now this guy is going to drink it. What's he going to 00:16:51.69\00:16:53.61 say? I mean, you just got the water. You just pour the 00:16:53.64\00:16:56.66 water in. Right. You're the servant, you're taking water 00:16:56.69\00:16:58.94 to the Master of the feast and you're thinking, "What's 00:16:58.97\00:17:01.30 he going to do when he drinks this water?" So this was 00:17:01.33\00:17:03.70 an act of faith. Even to go and trust that by the time it 00:17:03.73\00:17:07.44 got to the Master of the feast, it would be what it 00:17:07.47\00:17:09.56 needed to be. And I think too, that again, I just had to 00:17:09.59\00:17:12.62 back up a little bit but they had already had wine. Yeh. 00:17:12.65\00:17:17.77 I mean, maybe these very same stone jars but did you 00:17:17.80\00:17:22.50 see what it says here? It says, "Each one containing 20 00:17:22.53\00:17:25.49 or 30 gallons" Yeh " a piece. " So if it was only 20 00:17:25.52\00:17:30.19 gallons, that would be 120 gallons yeh of wine! Now, 00:17:30.22\00:17:36.86 that feeds a lot of - or that- that takes care of a lot of 00:17:36.89\00:17:40.66 thirst, provides for a lot of people, but they had already 00:17:40.69\00:17:42.57 been emptied out. Yeh It was like they had 2 or 3 00:17:42.60\00:17:44.77 thousand people there. That's right I mean, that's a lot 00:17:44.80\00:17:47.02 of drinking. That's right. So, one thing, if it- if it was 00:17:47.05\00:17:53.09 fermented wine, the- the Master of the feast probably 00:17:53.12\00:17:56.53 wouldn't have a clue anybody was bringing them 00:17:56.56\00:17:58.49 anything. Right That's right. That's right So now notice 00:17:58.52\00:18:00.92 Verse 9, 00:18:00.95\00:18:01.92 Yes 00:18:03.12\00:18:04.39 It did 00:18:08.21\00:18:09.18 and Dwight, I think this- this one passage is one that 00:18:22.55\00:18:26.24 people, in our perverted thinking we, "Oh, the good 00:18:26.27\00:18:29.22 wine! The good stuff!" Yes And they yeh people 00:18:29.25\00:18:31.56 assume that the good wine or the good stuff must have 00:18:31.59\00:18:35.05 been the really well fermented Right wine. yes. Now, 00:18:35.08\00:18:39.03 what people don't understand is a couple things. First 00:18:39.06\00:18:41.09 of all, there are two terms used in the Bible for wine. 00:18:41.12\00:18:44.84 In the Old Testament, the word- the Hebrew word is 00:18:44.87\00:18:47.21 yayin and the New Testament the word is oinos, and in 00:18:47.24\00:18:51.03 the Greek, OK and both terms could mean either 'fresh 00:18:51.06\00:18:55.58 grape juice' OK or fermented wine, depending on the 00:18:55.61\00:19:00.07 context. And so, in the- in the original language, it 00:19:00.10\00:19:03.90 doesn't say one or the other. OK You've got to let the 00:19:03.93\00:19:06.13 context determine it No. 1. Another thing is that the 00:19:06.16\00:19:11.86 way of using or storing grape juice. You know of 00:19:11.89\00:19:14.56 course, they didn't have refrigeration Right and so 00:19:14.59\00:19:16.94 there are couple of ways that I know of that they would 00:19:16.97\00:19:18.50 try to at least - you know, these are the two that come 00:19:18.53\00:19:21.36 to my mind. One thing that they would do to 00:19:21.39\00:19:23.57 refrigerate it was they would - of course they would 00:19:23.60\00:19:26.00 dig their wells for their water Right, sure and the well 00:19:26.03\00:19:28.33 is beneath the earth, and the water down there would 00:19:28.36\00:19:29.90 be cold cold because the water's down in the... 00:19:29.93\00:19:31.42 Sometimes they would- they would store their wine in 00:19:31.45\00:19:34.40 wineskin and they would keep it stored, lowered down 00:19:34.43\00:19:37.77 into the well, to keep it cold that way. OK Another 00:19:37.80\00:19:40.94 thing that they would do is they would boil off the 00:19:40.97\00:19:43.32 liquid and it will leave a thick paste and when they 00:19:43.35\00:19:47.82 wanted fresh wine and when it was off-season, they 00:19:47.85\00:19:51.94 would just reconstitute it. You know Wow! mix it in 00:19:51.97\00:19:54.46 water. They had that- they had Wow, they had that 00:19:54.49\00:19:55.68 stuff figured out way before we thought we had our 00:19:55.71\00:19:57.82 freeze dry. It wasn't freeze-dried but you know, 00:19:57.85\00:20:01.73 they just pour a little water and mix it up. That's right 00:20:01.76\00:20:03.76 They had that figured out. And likely because you're 00:20:03.79\00:20:06.34 way out of fresh grape season at this point in time, Yeh 00:20:06.37\00:20:09.72 you're not going to have the wineskins down Right 00:20:09.75\00:20:12.06 You're probably going to have the reconstituted stuff. 00:20:12.09\00:20:14.94 And you can imagine after drinking that and then 00:20:14.97\00:20:18.52 getting some- some fresh grape juice when it's not 00:20:18.55\00:20:23.10 even harvest season. Wow! Where did this come from? 00:20:23.13\00:20:26.28 Yeh. That's what was happening here and somebody- 00:20:26.31\00:20:28.97 your Viewers may say, "Well, how do you know that 00:20:29.00\00:20:30.49 that's what was happening?" Well, you know the 00:20:30.52\00:20:32.10 Bibleñ Well, I was just going to say, wine You 00:20:32.13\00:20:38.90 know, I've seen it on - I've never had any like this 00:20:38.93\00:20:41.35 because I would have never I never was really a wine 00:20:41.38\00:20:43.63 drinker at all but, you know, wine, to be good, had to 00:20:43.66\00:20:48.78 be aged. uh hmm They want the old stuff. Yeh. The 00:20:48.81\00:20:52.46 older that was, the more expensive the bottle of wine, 00:20:52.49\00:20:54.64 That's right right. Champagne, whatever it is, the 00:20:54.67\00:20:56.96 older. Here, it was fresh. That's right. It was the 00:20:56.99\00:20:59.68 freshest so I mean, that's just another reason. I mean, 00:20:59.71\00:21:02.24 he didn't say, "Go down town and find the oldest stuff 00:21:02.27\00:21:06.64 you can get and bring it to me. " "I'll really make some 00:21:06.67\00:21:08.23 really good stuff. " Well you know, our Viewers are 00:21:08.26\00:21:09.75 going to be asking the question, "Well, how are you so 00:21:09.78\00:21:12.06 sure that it wasn't fermented wine?" Well, for one, the 00:21:12.09\00:21:15.78 Bible was very explicit in its teachings. Let's go to 00:21:15.81\00:21:18.85 Proverbs Chapter 20. OK. The Bibleñ Proverbs- 00:21:18.88\00:21:21.87 Proverbs Chapter 20, let's get in there. And Verse 1 00:21:21.90\00:21:24.67 OK And the Bible is very explicit in its teachings 00:21:24.70\00:21:27.71 against fermented wine. Yeh and so you know, we 00:21:27.74\00:21:32.07 would have to You know, why would Jesus go 00:21:32.10\00:21:34.87 contrary to his own teaching for so many centuries? 00:21:34.90\00:21:37.45 That's a question we would have to ask him and I 00:21:37.48\00:21:39.54 think it's pretty obvious that he wouldn't. Yes. He 00:21:39.57\00:21:43.09 didn't contradict the Word and you know, we had a - 00:21:43.12\00:21:46.35 one of our episodes, we dealt with Nadav and Avihu, 00:21:46.38\00:21:49.32 the Sons of Aaron, Right who offered strange fire 00:21:49.35\00:21:51.58 before God. Why? Because they had been drinking 00:21:51.61\00:21:54.13 Yes intoxicating drink. Yes. and God forbade them to 00:21:54.16\00:21:56.87 do that That's right so that it wouldn't impair their 00:21:56.90\00:21:59.03 judgment. And I would think, that alone should let the 00:21:59.06\00:22:02.79 Viewers realize that you know, our body is a temple of 00:22:02.82\00:22:06.87 God. We need to take care of it. God is not going to 00:22:06.90\00:22:10.07 manufacture something so everybody can go get drunk 00:22:10.10\00:22:13.00 and do stupid things because like you said, I've been 00:22:13.03\00:22:15.97 before I was converted, where I'd go drinking at parties 00:22:16.00\00:22:19.05 or something and I mean, really, the more people 00:22:19.08\00:22:21.42 drink, the more things people do. I have- I have 00:22:21.45\00:22:24.97 awakened the next day, not only with a terrible 00:22:25.00\00:22:28.13 headache. That's right. But with remembering partially 00:22:28.16\00:22:32.61 the things that I had said to people that I would never 00:22:32.64\00:22:37.24 say sober and I was embarrassed. That's before I was 00:22:37.27\00:22:40.86 converted. In other words, Yes even in my rough state 00:22:40.89\00:22:43.62 of affairs in my own life, to go from remembering the 00:22:43.65\00:22:48.12 next day and then hoping that I wouldn't even meet 00:22:48.15\00:22:50.49 some of these people because I felt so stupid once I 00:22:50.52\00:22:53.47 sobered out. That's right. So I mean, why wouldñ we're 00:22:53.50\00:22:55.61 Jesus do that you know? We're actually going to see 00:22:55.64\00:22:57.27 that in the next text. OK This one here, Proverbs 20 00:22:57.30\00:23:00.88 verse 1, just tells us 00:23:00.91\00:23:02.00 Amen 00:23:03.54\00:23:04.51 and incidentally, a lot of our Viewers may not realize 00:23:05.76\00:23:07.92 but the strong drink in Bible times might have been 00:23:07.95\00:23:11.73 about 5% alcohol. Wow. What our beers are today, 00:23:11.76\00:23:14.76 Yeh you know. They didn't even we- they didn't even 00:23:14.79\00:23:16.97 get into what we have. The whiskies Yeh and the 00:23:17.00\00:23:18.75 vodkas and things like that. 00:23:18.78\00:23:20.11 Well, anybody who, you know, I- How many fights 00:23:26.60\00:23:29.43 break out when people are drunk? Yeh. I mean, Lots 00:23:29.46\00:23:32.71 that's the idea there. Now, Proverbs 23 is the next one 00:23:32.74\00:23:35.03 we're going to look at. Well, you think- think that you 00:23:35.06\00:23:38.33 are way better than you are. Oh, Yeh. I mean, today 00:23:38.36\00:23:41.96 I've- Ive had people, "Oh, I can drive. " Yeh. They 00:23:41.99\00:23:44.51 can't. "I can do that. " The thing with this is that, that's 00:23:44.54\00:23:47.96 why our bodies are not our own and God wants us to 00:23:47.99\00:23:50.20 keep our minds wise and sharp. We can't afford to be 00:23:50.23\00:23:52.69 doing this stuff. Yeh, absolutely. Now Proverbs 23 00:23:52.72\00:23:56.11 verse 29 Yeh that's page 746 in the Remnant Bible. 00:23:56.14\00:23:59.04 Proverbs 23 and verse 29. The question is asked 00:23:59.07\00:24:02.12 Yeh 00:24:10.63\00:24:11.60 You know, who wounds Yeh themselves accidentally 00:24:11.61\00:24:12.58 Right 00:24:12.59\00:24:13.56 and here is the answer 00:24:13.57\00:24:14.92 Or mixed alcoholic drinks 00:24:20.53\00:24:23.31 Verse 31 00:24:24.99\00:24:26.00 This is just describing that fermentation, the bubbles. 00:24:33.19\00:24:35.83 Yeh, and that's whyñ after fermentation. And that's 00:24:35.86\00:24:38.18 why you're saying that wine is used- is used in both 00:24:38.21\00:24:40.52 places That's right Because, it says- it says, "Do not 00:24:40.55\00:24:43.18 look on the wine when it is red. " In other words it's 00:24:43.21\00:24:45.18 making this distinguish of what kind of wine is good 00:24:45.21\00:24:47.91 and what kind isn't. That's exactly right. OK It's not 00:24:47.94\00:24:49.53 wine in general Yeh because this could be any - it 00:24:49.56\00:24:51.56 could be grape juice as well. Right. But don't look on 00:24:51.59\00:24:53.52 the wine, when basically it's fermented. Yes. And then 00:24:53.55\00:24:57.50 it says in Verse 33 00:24:57.53\00:24:58.66 Yeh, I guess Now the King James version puts it this 00:25:01.46\00:25:03.29 way,"Your eyes will behold strange women. " Yeh. 00:25:03.32\00:25:05.44 And you know, how many affairs and things like that 00:25:05.47\00:25:08.56 have come up with many of them? Absolutely. And it's 00:25:08.59\00:25:10.54 another one of those things that are embarrassing. 00:25:10.57\00:25:11.98 When it's all over, then you sober up, there's a lot of 00:25:12.01\00:25:14.48 apologizing many times to do. You feel bad. Well, so 00:25:14.51\00:25:18.22 it's common sense, without scripture, ought to tell us 00:25:18.25\00:25:23.34 something. Just- you know what I think the problem 00:25:23.37\00:25:25.27 is? Pastor, and just for you Viewers, in my own heart, 00:25:25.30\00:25:30.27 because of my own experience, when I want to do 00:25:30.30\00:25:33.96 something bad enough uh hmm and it doesn't go quite 00:25:33.99\00:25:39.49 along with the scriptures, I am great at justifying 00:25:39.52\00:25:43.29 things. Are you? I mean, is it easy for you to justify 00:25:43.32\00:25:46.62 things. If we really want to do something, we come up 00:25:46.65\00:25:49.29 with the reason why. It's like alcohol. Common sense - 00:25:49.32\00:25:51.73 if you can understand what's going on here, common 00:25:51.76\00:25:54.92 sense says it's bad! Yeh. I mean, Noah drank 00:25:54.95\00:25:58.74 fermented wine. No back then if you remember and 00:25:58.77\00:26:00.70 there was some terrible things that happened. I mean, 00:26:00.73\00:26:03.27 we go through this stuff whenñ Look at all the bad 00:26:03.30\00:26:05.35 things that happened because of alcohol. That's right. 00:26:05.38\00:26:07.72 People would say, "Well it's- alcohol is a good for this, 00:26:07.75\00:26:10.16 it's better for your heart or this. " Even if that could be 00:26:10.19\00:26:13.18 qualified, if it ruins your judgment while it's 00:26:13.21\00:26:16.83 benefitting your body, what good is it? You know, a 00:26:16.86\00:26:19.50 little bit of good... Well, my heart's better when I go 00:26:19.53\00:26:22.00 out and drink, and drive, and kill somebody, Yeh and 00:26:22.03\00:26:24.10 go get myself killed. Yeh, and people that have run- 00:26:24.13\00:26:26.30 you know hit children and stuff, I mean and we go 00:26:26.33\00:26:29.54 around and sometimes, Christians go around and say, 00:26:29.57\00:26:31.62 "A little bit is OK. " When is a little bit not a little bit 00:26:31.65\00:26:33.80 anymore? Yeh. You know, because once you start, you 00:26:33.83\00:26:37.63 know many times it's not just a little bit anymore and 00:26:37.66\00:26:40.11 so had Jesus turned that water into real alcoholic 00:26:40.14\00:26:44.09 The reality is, anybody who would have left that 00:26:44.12\00:26:47.20 wedding feast under that intoxication and had either 00:26:47.23\00:26:49.91 gotten into an adulterous affair, going out and hurting 00:26:49.94\00:26:52.59 somebody or whatever, Jesus himself would have held 00:26:52.62\00:26:54.45 responsibility for it because he's the one that got them 00:26:54.48\00:26:56.57 drunk. Well, he would've had to pay the penalty of sin. 00:26:56.60\00:26:59.33 That's right. I mean, come on. It just does not 00:26:59.36\00:27:01.80 make sense. Well, you know, we got to wrap this up. 00:27:01.83\00:27:05.44 Give- give me one more point here. Well, one more 00:27:05.47\00:27:08.03 text, going so fast very good text here in 1st 00:27:08.06\00:27:09.50 Corinthians Chapter 9, New Testament, OK Chapter 6 00:27:09.53\00:27:12.63 verse 9, New Testament says, 00:27:12.66\00:27:13.96 OK 00:27:22.72\00:27:23.69 I mean, very plain.
