thing or an incidental thing

the temple and there were things

going on there and He said
"Well, since I'm here anyway.

something about this. "

The fact is He did it twice
in his ministry that we have

recorded in the
scriptures and He could

have done it more times.

When he cleansed the temple
at the beginning of His ministry

and then when he
cleanse His temple at the end

of his ministry, it was as
bad at the end of his ministry

beginning of His ministry.

Which tell us He could
have done it more times

starts and ends his earthly

This is going to
have profound significance

Isaiah 60. I'm going to
start in the first verse.

Isaiah 60:1. The Bible says

This is speaking of
the darkness of sin.

Now tell me. Is this not

descriptive of the
time that we live in.

note of the fact that

in the beginning the Bible says

"God created the
heavens and the earth

and the earth is

What I find very interesting is
it wasn't a couple of days later

until God actually
created the sun, moon and stars.

So what was the light?

When you
understand, when you do a study

in the scripture, what
you're going to find out

with the Bible contrast
that light and darkness with

good and evil and the
essence of goodness is

God's character

and we're going to see

Well that
knowledge of God has faded

and darkness covers the Earth.

Deep darkness to people.

Multitudes today in the
world don't know who God is.

They don't
understand who God is.

They don't understand
His purpose for their lives.

And I want to make
this point this morning.

If you do even a little bit
you're, like the apostle Paul,

are indebted to the people
that you come in contact with.

To let them know
the Gospel truth.

He says, Isaiah says, verse 3.
Let me start in verse 2 again.

God's glory will be seen on us.

Just a real
quick lesson in this.

Many of you maybe familiar
with this but when the Bible

speaks of the Glory of God

it's speaking of
the character of God.

In Exodus 31, Moses
goes before the Lord,

sorry chapter 33.
Moses goes before the Lord
00:07:56.67\00:07:59.48
and He asks the
Lord a question. He says,

"God show me your Glory. "
00:08:01.46\00:08:03.99
To which God
responds, "Okay, Moses.
00:08:04.02\00:08:07.05
You found a favor in my sight.
00:08:07.08\00:08:09.44
I'm going to make all of
my goodness pass before you
00:08:09.47\00:08:14.92
and I'm going to proclaim
to you the name of the Lord. "
00:08:14.95\00:08:17.27
These things are synonymous.
00:08:17.30\00:08:18.63
When we're talking
about the glory of God,

we're talking about the
goodness and character of God
00:08:20.19\00:08:22.66
and when the Bible says
here that the Glory of the Lord

will be risen upon you,
what it's saying is that the
00:08:25.32\00:08:28.27
character of God is
going to be seen in his people.

So that when Paul says,
"I'm crucified with Christ

but I'm not really alive.
It's Christ who lives in me. "

That's what's he talking about.

Do you want people
to see Christ in you?

This is what the
Bible's foretelling.

The time at the
end of Earth's history

when deep darkness
covers the Earth and the people

but the people of God
will be shining a light.

The very character of God
will be seen in his people.

Those are just the
people who don't know God.

God says this morning.

The sea and prophecy is
representative of multitudes

the glory of the Lord is risen

upon us people multitudes
will be drawn and say,

"Why is it you're so different?

What is it that makes you
so different from the rest?

What is this light in you?"

Are you looking
forward to that day?

Well, guess what. It's today.

It's today for everyone of us.

We shouldn't be
looking forward to that time.

Today. God has
promised to give His Spirit

to us and that His
character can be seen in us.

These are people who
didn't once know the Lord

but now they are singing
praises to the Lord, verse 7

Now the language
there, is sanctuary language.

See, in the temple, in the
wilderness when the sacrifice

was accepted the presence of God
would come down and His glory

would be seen
radiating from the temple.

God glorified the
house of His glory.

Now we're going
to come back to that.

I want you to come
with me to John chapter 2.

John chapter 2 and we're
going to find the first instance
00:11:14.47\00:11:18.08
of Christ's earthly ministry
of cleansing the temple.

John chapter 2. We're
going to go to verse 13.

John 2:13. The Bible says

the what?
00:11:37.89\00:11:38.86
The Passover
00:11:38.87\00:11:39.92
Okay.

Now, you have to understand
the significance of that.

What that
meant, Passover was one
00:11:47.50\00:11:50.17
of the feasts that
God required His people
00:11:50.20\00:11:52.81
to be at in Jerusalem
and so there were people
00:11:52.84\00:11:56.13
who came from all over
that didn't dwell in Jerusalem
00:11:56.16\00:11:59.65
but during Passover time
the city would be packed.
00:11:59.68\00:12:02.83
People came from
all different locations.
00:12:02.86\00:12:05.61
And it says in verse 14

He hears what was going on.

When people would
travel from far distances
00:12:17.79\00:12:21.17
and they'd come to the temple,

they had to offer
animal sacrifices.

Some doves, some sheep, some
bulls and that was, you know,
00:12:26.11\00:12:32.24
can you imagine bringing the
bulls and the sheep from home?

How many of you have
travelled to get here?

How would you like to bring
00:12:38.04\00:12:39.37
doves and sheep
and bulls with you?
00:12:39.40\00:12:42.40
Wow, what are you
going to do about that?

So what they had set up in
the temple was that they would
00:12:43.74\00:12:47.66
actually sell the
animal sacrifices in the temple
00:12:47.69\00:12:50.77
which wasn't in
of itself a bad thing
00:12:50.80\00:12:54.28
and the people
could travel from afar.
00:12:54.31\00:12:56.08
Now, the temple has a
currency, it's own currency.
00:12:56.11\00:12:58.33
It was the temple shekel and
what might happen is you come
00:12:58.36\00:13:00.84
and you would give your money
00:13:00.87\00:13:02.01
and you trade it in
for the temple shekels.
00:13:02.04\00:13:03.81
That was the
exchange rate, you know,
00:13:03.84\00:13:05.40
was supposed to be fairly fair.
00:13:05.43\00:13:07.44
You know, you've got people
coming from different locations,
00:13:07.47\00:13:10.33
different currencies so
you had to trade it all in
00:13:10.36\00:13:12.45
for the temple
shekel and then you'd use
00:13:12.48\00:13:14.19
the temple shekel
to buy your sacrifices.
00:13:14.22\00:13:17.28
That way they didn't have to
hold the sacrifice from home.
00:13:17.31\00:13:19.92
You could come to the
temple during the Passover
00:13:19.95\00:13:21.62
and here there are
multitudes of people coming
00:13:21.65\00:13:23.71
into the temple to
buy their sacrifices to
00:13:23.74\00:13:25.50
offer to the Lord
during the Passover season.
00:13:25.53\00:13:28.30
The only problem is that the
temple had become a place where,
00:13:28.33\00:13:34.20
you can only imagine that
if you're changing currency,
00:13:34.23\00:13:37.05
well, if we charge a little
extra, if we charge the more
00:13:37.08\00:13:41.18
money for the temple shekel
00:13:41.21\00:13:42.28
because they all
gotta exchange it.
00:13:42.31\00:13:43.72
We could make a
little money off of that
00:13:43.75\00:13:45.32
and if we charge a
little bit more for the animal
00:13:45.35\00:13:47.40
sacrifices we can
make a little money there.
00:13:47.43\00:13:49.41
And what had happened is the
service that had been designed
00:13:49.44\00:13:53.71
to direct the people's attention
to God had become a place,
00:13:53.74\00:13:59.54
really a market place that did
nothing else but glorify man.
00:13:59.57\00:14:04.94
Okay, this is what
we're reading about.
00:14:06.04\00:14:07.51
This is what's
happening so Jesus comes in.
00:14:07.54\00:14:09.33
Now, how do you think,
how would do you expect?
00:14:09.36\00:14:10.40
Him to feel about
this. Here our people,
00:14:10.43\00:14:12.57
listen to me carefully,
who have come from afar
00:14:12.60\00:14:15.17
and they're longing to
know that God receives them.
00:14:15.20\00:14:18.05
They're longing to have the
assurance of the forgiveness
00:14:18.08\00:14:20.91
of God for their sins
only to come and find out
00:14:20.94\00:14:24.13
"Oh, sure. You can have
forgiveness but for a price. "
00:14:24.16\00:14:26.98
"Okay. Well, I have. I
brought my money with me.
00:14:27.97\00:14:29.68
Sorry it's not
enough. Once you change it
00:14:29.71\00:14:31.48
for the temple
shekel, wait a minute you're
00:14:31.51\00:14:33.49
charging twice as much for a
sheep and I would have to pay.
00:14:33.52\00:14:35.83
This isn't fair. " "Hey,
look, that's the way it is. "

Multitudes of people then
being turned away or if nothing,
00:14:40.60\00:14:45.10
if not turned away, the
idea was being impressed
00:14:45.13\00:14:48.54
in their mind that the
God that they serve really
00:14:48.57\00:14:50.72
wasn't a God that
cared about their salvation.

He was just a god
who wanted to make His
00:14:52.59\00:14:55.43
people rich or something.
00:14:55.46\00:14:56.62
It was perverting the
whole purpose of the Gospel.

The whole reason for the service
was being distorted and Jesus,

the One Who
ordained the service,

the One Who ordained the
system of animal sacrifices,

comes in and He
sees these taking place.

Now, we're going to
pause there and we're going to

to actually stop there
and we're going to go through

what we just read
and try to picture this.

Now, I'm going to do a
book promotion this morning.

beautiful book on the life

Jesus and as I was reading

this passage in the
book, Desire of Ages,

I mean, it just makes
this whole scene come to life.

And I was reading about
Jesus going into the temple
00:16:49.19\00:16:52.05
and it just really put
me into the person of Jesus.

How would you feel? How
would God feel to go in.
00:16:54.25\00:16:56.53
Here Jesus came and gave
up what we can't even imagine.
00:16:56.56\00:17:01.53
He left heaven and left
all the glory that He had.
00:17:01.56\00:17:04.57
to come to this Earth
to save fallen humanity.
00:17:04.60\00:17:07.01
How many have fallen humanity?
All, each and everyone.
00:17:07.04\00:17:10.75
And so here He comes in the
temple that's called by His name

only to see that
each and everyone
00:17:13.74\00:17:15.22
isn't getting
the fair opportunity.
00:17:15.25\00:17:17.06
And righteous indignation
fills His heart as He sees
00:17:19.61\00:17:22.46
the perversion of the
Gospel and He takes the scourge,

as the Bible says, and he
begins to go through and run

the animals out, telling
the money changers to get out

and you have to
picture the temple.
00:17:33.42\00:17:34.97
This is this building
that has the hard marble floor.

You've got this money boxes
and these coins and He just
00:17:37.51\00:17:40.07
throws the table over and
you can hear the coins just,
00:17:40.10\00:17:42.41
the clanking and the
clattering of the coins just
00:17:42.44\00:17:46.86
resounding through the temple.

And as you're reading this
in the book, Desire of Ages,

it says as Jesus comes in,
He's divinity flashes through

His humanity and all
of the unholy traffic,

all of the noise, all
of the clammer hushes.

Not just to a silence but to
a very uncomfortable silence.

Even His own
disciples are terror stricken.

Listen to this. From the
book, Desire of Ages page 158,

it says, "A panic
sweeps over the multitude

who feel the
overshadowing of His divinity.

Cries of terror
escape from hundreds
00:18:23.33\00:18:27.69
of blanched lips. Even
the disciples tremble. "
00:18:27.72\00:18:31.59
And let me make a
point to you this morning,
00:18:32.21\00:18:34.27
one that has been
forgotten by God's people today.
00:18:34.30\00:18:36.82
The God that we serve is
infinitely holy and while we
00:18:36.85\00:18:41.29
spend our time
talking about the fact
00:18:41.32\00:18:43.09
that God is love, indeed He is.
00:18:43.12\00:18:45.13
Something that we have to
come to grip with is this.
00:18:45.16\00:18:47.98
If we were immediately
at this moment brought into
00:18:48.01\00:18:50.57
the presence of the Almighty,
00:18:50.60\00:18:52.19
we would fall down on our faces
before Him terror stricken.
00:18:52.22\00:18:55.79
Not because God is trying
to inspire terror but just
00:18:55.82\00:18:58.91
because of the
awesomeness of the situation.

Daniel the Prophet that
the Bible says of Daniel
00:19:02.24\00:19:04.75
that He was one of the most
righteous people in the land.

In fact, the Bible uses Daniel
as an example of righteousness

in the Book of Ezekiel and yet
Daniel when he came into contact
00:19:10.82\00:19:14.09
with the Lord he said,
"All my crumbliness was turned
00:19:14.12\00:19:18.11
in me into corruption.
And I lost my strength.
00:19:18.14\00:19:22.49
All my goodness now in
the presence of the Lord
00:19:22.52\00:19:24.73
suddenly I
realize my weakness. "
00:19:24.76\00:19:27.02
It would do us all well to
have that kind of encounter with
00:19:29.24\00:19:32.82
the Lord and
realize that, "In my flesh,"
00:19:32.85\00:19:35.77
as the apostle Paul
says, "dwells no good thing. "

Our only hope is in Christ.
Christ was not coming in as One
00:19:39.13\00:19:42.53
who is trying to take away their
hope but I'm simply painting
00:19:42.56\00:19:45.15
up and Desire of Ages is
simply painting up the fact
00:19:45.18\00:19:46.98
that it wants His
divinity shown forth,
00:19:47.01\00:19:49.06
even His disciples
trembled because they were
00:19:49.09\00:19:51.32
in the presence of the
One Who created the worlds!
00:19:51.35\00:19:54.61
"Even the disciples tremble.
They are awe struck by the words
00:19:59.21\00:20:03.21
and manner of Jesus so
unlike His usual demeanor.
00:20:03.24\00:20:06.87
They remember that it is
written of Him in the Psalms,
00:20:06.90\00:20:12.72
the zeal of Thine
house hath eaten me up.
00:20:12.75\00:20:15.69
Soon the tumultuous throng
with their merchandise are

far remote from
the temple of the Lord.
00:20:20.37\00:20:22.39
The courts are free from unholy
traffic and a deep silence

and solemnity settles
upon the scene of confusion. "

Now listen to this last sentence
"The presence of the Lord.

The same presence
