ASI is a ministry that's networking all these 00:00:01.98\00:00:02.95 different ministries together with the church. 00:00:02.96\00:00:04.98 Being involved with ASI meeting other people. 00:00:05.01\00:00:07.81 ASI convention is an excellent opportunity just 00:00:07.84\00:00:10.32 a great opportunity. In ASI there is a 00:00:10.35\00:00:12.72 particular fellowship, ASI is really the stamp, 00:00:12.75\00:00:15.54 it's the glue that holds all the ministries together. 00:00:15.57\00:00:18.11 Welcome to ASI video magazine I am Dan 00:00:28.69\00:00:31.05 Houghton. Today we are going to meet ASI 00:00:31.08\00:00:33.96 members that are living out the ASI motto, 00:00:33.99\00:00:36.67 sharing Christ in the market place. God has 00:00:36.70\00:00:40.16 called each of us to serve him and to bring 00:00:40.19\00:00:42.93 others to him, no matter what our job it is 00:00:42.96\00:00:46.35 our business to do God's will, that is what 00:00:46.38\00:00:50.26 ASI is all about. Manuel and Esther Alva are 00:00:50.29\00:00:54.34 physicians near Chicago, Illinois, they have made 00:00:54.37\00:00:57.45 witnessing a central part of their work. They 00:00:57.48\00:01:00.81 regularly pray with patients and have had 00:01:00.84\00:01:03.49 many opportunities to talk about God with both 00:01:03.52\00:01:05.93 patients and coworkers. Let's hear more about 00:01:05.96\00:01:09.37 their remarkable story. This is a practice that 00:01:09.40\00:01:14.27 tends primarily to Spanish speaking 00:01:14.30\00:01:16.95 patients, for Hispanic patients and family comes 00:01:16.98\00:01:20.37 from a Latin country and the kids are born here 00:01:20.40\00:01:24.25 and they start going to school, there is always 00:01:24.28\00:01:26.52 the economy, even larger than in a regular family 00:01:26.55\00:01:29.84 that always lives in this country. About values, 00:01:29.87\00:01:33.09 about habits and the way the older generation 00:01:33.12\00:01:38.10 relates to younger generation and there is 00:01:38.13\00:01:39.88 always a break up of a family. So there is ample 00:01:39.91\00:01:42.77 opportunity to listen to this patients bringing 00:01:42.80\00:01:45.56 their problems, bringing their complaints and just 00:01:45.59\00:01:48.58 finding with few questions about what do 00:01:48.61\00:01:51.23 they do for a living; how many people are in the 00:01:51.26\00:01:53.34 house; how many old adult children 00:01:53.37\00:01:57.43 still live in the house and immediately you can 00:01:57.46\00:02:00.43 start seeing on the faces of people, worry, 00:02:00.46\00:02:03.11 tension, because there is a problem and 00:02:03.14\00:02:07.17 and we just poke a little bit there and they 00:02:07.20\00:02:09.84 start telling their life stories and some of them 00:02:09.87\00:02:13.08 cry and some of them wish there was a God as 00:02:13.11\00:02:17.33 they used to know before they came here, could 00:02:17.36\00:02:20.04 solve these problems and its; its, if you just let 00:02:20.07\00:02:23.64 him speak and just tell them about yes, there is a 00:02:23.67\00:02:26.57 God. Yes, he cares for me, yes I believe in 00:02:26.60\00:02:29.55 him, yes I had the same problems that you are 00:02:29.58\00:02:32.08 having or similar problems. I can sympathize 00:02:32.11\00:02:35.53 with that My practice is quite different 00:02:35.56\00:02:37.68 I see mostly inpatients who are bedridden 00:02:37.71\00:02:42.32 sometimes even before coming to the hospital and 00:02:42.35\00:02:44.96 many of them are on supportive machines 00:02:44.99\00:02:48.57 and care and there is not such a good opportunity 00:02:48.60\00:02:52.64 for a meaningful interaction but sometimes the Lord 00:02:52.67\00:02:57.53 allows us to pray with a patient and show to them 00:02:57.56\00:03:03.90 that care and compassion We have opportunities to 00:03:03.93\00:03:08.10 pray with most of these people. Not only myself I 00:03:08.13\00:03:11.16 mean the medical assistants and nurse that 00:03:11.19\00:03:14.52 works here, they all are listening and trying to see 00:03:14.55\00:03:20.63 what the Holy Spirit tells them about what to say, 00:03:20.66\00:03:23.69 how to intervene in each patient's case. So that 00:03:23.72\00:03:27.50 facility has allowed the clinical work. People are 00:03:27.53\00:03:29.90 more open with their symptoms; they tend to 00:03:29.93\00:03:32.71 follow indications or suggestions for better 00:03:32.74\00:03:35.62 diets for better care, they are very unlikely to be 00:03:35.65\00:03:40.33 upset with us, I have to credit my staff for that 00:03:40.36\00:03:43.67 Mostly my major opportunities are with my 00:03:43.70\00:03:47.68 coworkers, the nurses, the physicians, specially I 00:03:47.71\00:03:53.26 had the opportunity to work giving some health 00:03:53.29\00:03:56.61 education to the staff in the area of house keeping, 00:03:56.64\00:04:00.78 most of them are Spanish speaking and they are in a 00:04:00.81\00:04:07.28 second class if we would say, second class in the 00:04:07.31\00:04:13.13 hospital setting and sometimes we as 00:04:13.16\00:04:17.76 physicians and professionals walk by 00:04:17.79\00:04:20.35 and not even say hi, good morning to this person 00:04:20.38\00:04:24.66 who is so dedicatedly cleaning the surroundings 00:04:24.69\00:04:29.07 of the hospital and that is something we regret, 00:04:29.10\00:04:33.12 but they feel included and notice important that 00:04:33.15\00:04:38.69 when you say hi to them and acknowledge. Well, 00:04:38.72\00:04:41.43 through several circumstances 00:04:41.46\00:04:43.71 I was able to make connections with their 00:04:43.74\00:04:45.94 director; their department director and we held 00:04:45.97\00:04:49.90 52 sessions in one full year of health 00:04:49.93\00:04:54.87 education in different topics, I used the book 00:04:54.90\00:04:58.52 written by Hans Diehl and it's so simplified that 00:04:58.55\00:05:03.12 anyone can understand. I have not seen Thracian in 00:05:03.15\00:05:06.38 the sense of Bible studies but only he knows the 00:05:06.41\00:05:10.63 seed is there, we're called to plant the seed or to 00:05:10.66\00:05:14.47 harvest according to what the Lord presents to us 00:05:14.50\00:05:17.81 Actually here in our office, our staff is 00:05:17.84\00:05:22.41 Seventh-Day Adventist except our receptionist. 00:05:22.44\00:05:25.32 She is a wonderful Catholic lady, but she 00:05:25.35\00:05:29.24 wanted to learn more about the Bible and our 00:05:29.27\00:05:32.40 children and children of our manager come and 00:05:32.43\00:05:36.39 work here and they actually like to interact 00:05:36.42\00:05:38.97 with patients and one of them said hey we have 00:05:39.00\00:05:41.34 new beginnings here, how do we show this to look, 00:05:41.37\00:05:46.65 the receptionist they have, the woman was stunned 00:05:46.68\00:05:49.52 with the series. Some other workers of the 00:05:49.55\00:05:53.17 hospital were also interested in coming 00:05:53.20\00:05:55.29 and seeing that, I remember that she said may be we 00:05:55.32\00:05:58.21 will see Bible studies here but I think they are 00:05:58.24\00:06:01.25 coming, we just have realized this year 00:06:01.28\00:06:03.44 I think about my responsibilities as a 00:06:03.47\00:06:06.52 parent and trying to combine being mother 00:06:06.55\00:06:11.15 and also a professional and sometimes I look 00:06:11.18\00:06:18.08 back and I say oh how many years did I sort of 00:06:18.11\00:06:22.48 wasted not being the best mother while I was trying 00:06:22.51\00:06:27.14 to get my training, but then there is consolation 00:06:27.17\00:06:31.71 in the Lord especially in this gatherings, ASI 00:06:31.74\00:06:36.77 gathering when I see my children being a used, 00:06:36.80\00:06:41.64 being active, doing things and I realize oh they have 00:06:41.67\00:06:47.75 Jesus in their heart too even though I don't feel 00:06:47.78\00:06:51.76 responsible for being the one who trained them and 00:06:51.79\00:06:56.63 taught and did everything spiritually for them 00:06:56.66\00:07:00.49 And I can tell you wonderful experiences 00:07:00.52\00:07:03.28 that God has given me through ASI and through 00:07:03.31\00:07:05.38 the things I have learned through ASI, experiences 00:07:05.41\00:07:09.24 in my family, coming back to love my mother 00:07:09.27\00:07:14.30 again; my mother and I were distanced for many 00:07:14.33\00:07:16.60 years and she ended up having colon cancer. I am 00:07:16.63\00:07:21.02 a gastroenterologist and we don't talk on the 00:07:21.05\00:07:23.53 phones often, I mean we didn't back then and I am 00:07:23.56\00:07:27.66 known to ask, she was just falling ill slowly. She 00:07:27.69\00:07:32.27 was in a lot of denial, she is a very strong person 00:07:32.30\00:07:34.59 but God was working, even ten years before that 00:07:34.62\00:07:40.40 he saw to it that we will meet ten years later with 00:07:40.43\00:07:45.14 this diagnosis, with forgiveness, with 00:07:45.17\00:07:48.30 reconciliation and if I hadn't been prepared 00:07:48.33\00:07:52.40 spiritually and mentally by all the material I heard 00:07:52.43\00:07:55.20 at ASI, I couldn't see myself turning back and 00:07:55.23\00:08:00.55 being a different person. So, God is using ASI 00:08:00.58\00:08:05.11 powerfully, not only to spread the message from 00:08:05.14\00:08:07.66 Christ in the market place but to change everyone 00:08:07.69\00:08:10.29 of the people that walk in and open himself or 00:08:10.32\00:08:14.35 herself and say God here I am, use me. God says I 00:08:14.38\00:08:18.83 can use you, let me work on you first, while I work 00:08:18.86\00:08:22.61 on you, you can work for me, it's wonderful. God 00:08:22.64\00:08:24.76 doesn't wait until we graduate, you know he 00:08:24.79\00:08:27.21 starts using us right away, changed us, changes us 00:08:27.24\00:08:29.87 and uses us, little as we can do, as 00:08:29.90\00:08:33.37 much as we can do. India was quite an 00:08:33.40\00:08:35.65 experience, we really didn't know what to 00:08:35.68\00:08:39.34 expect we would have liked to do medical work 00:08:39.37\00:08:43.48 but the setting where we were doing at this visit 00:08:43.51\00:08:48.22 was mainly evangelistic. So my husband was in 00:08:48.25\00:08:51.75 charge of the sermons, preaching I did the help 00:08:51.78\00:08:54.95 lectures and we were blessed to have our 00:08:54.98\00:08:57.15 youngest son Ray who was at the time 12 doing 00:08:57.18\00:09:01.81 the children's story and that was a good, I don't 00:09:01.84\00:09:06.87 have words to say very good experience and 00:09:06.90\00:09:11.00 there were 400 souls baptized in our group, 00:09:11.03\00:09:17.55 in our group. And it was not our doing we were 00:09:17.58\00:09:20.24 just their instruments. One of the physicians 00:09:20.27\00:09:23.09 across the hall is an orthopedist, he is a 00:09:23.12\00:09:27.60 Hindu orthopedist and when we went to 00:09:27.63\00:09:31.16 India somebody in the hospital wanted us to you 00:09:31.19\00:09:35.93 know they learned that we went there and they 00:09:35.96\00:09:37.60 asked us what do want, what do you, I said that 00:09:37.63\00:09:40.14 we want to do some health teaching and some 00:09:40.17\00:09:43.72 evangelism too, we want to tell people about God 00:09:43.75\00:09:46.92 and they were that's interesting, do you have 00:09:46.95\00:09:50.10 a picture that we can put in our newsletter for our 00:09:50.13\00:09:53.61 physicians and my wife and I had a picture and 00:09:53.64\00:09:57.60 my son Ray had a picture with our Indian garb and 00:09:57.63\00:10:01.41 we sent it to the hospital here. It's not an 00:10:01.44\00:10:03.69 Adventist hospital, but they put a picture 00:10:03.72\00:10:06.13 there and they put physicians from our 00:10:06.16\00:10:08.61 hospital visit India and they put a little article 00:10:08.64\00:10:10.86 there. So this doctor read that and he one day he 00:10:10.89\00:10:15.64 was reading this and he looked at me coming into 00:10:15.67\00:10:17.51 the lounge and he said now you are not Indian, 00:10:17.54\00:10:21.79 you are not Pakistani, you are not Middle 00:10:21.82\00:10:23.39 Eastern, you are Hispanic. What were 00:10:23.42\00:10:25.31 you doing in India? I said, Dr. Ray, we were 00:10:25.34\00:10:28.65 there because we love God and we wanted to 00:10:28.68\00:10:30.74 help people. And he said so what church you 00:10:30.77\00:10:35.38 belong to, I said we're Seventh-Day Adventists, 00:10:35.41\00:10:37.52 that the chapel in this hospital is the Seventh- 00:10:37.55\00:10:41.78 Day Adventist pastor, he is from India also. So he 00:10:41.81\00:10:46.34 comes up to Ray, he is still kind of confused, he's 00:10:46.37\00:10:48.40 thinking what kind of people go from this part 00:10:48.43\00:10:50.54 of the world to the other part of the world and he 00:10:50.57\00:10:53.52 met the pastor in the hallway and he says look 00:10:53.55\00:10:55.99 at this picture, he says, these people are not from 00:10:56.02\00:10:58.16 India. These people tell me they're Seventh-Day 00:10:58.19\00:11:00.84 Adventists and the pastor said well so am I. And he 00:11:00.87\00:11:04.72 said this is wonderful he said, do you do any other 00:11:04.75\00:11:07.67 things in India. And Pastor Benjamin told 00:11:07.70\00:11:11.64 him yes we run orphanages, hospitals and this man 00:11:11.67\00:11:16.09 said for years I had a dream to help an 00:11:16.12\00:11:18.94 orphanage in India, just tell me more about this. 00:11:18.97\00:11:21.49 So Pastor Benjamin showed him some 00:11:21.52\00:11:23.83 pictures in the Internet of all the orphanages and 00:11:23.86\00:11:26.92 Dr. Ray he is a seasoned orthopedist, who is about 00:11:26.95\00:11:29.78 to retire. And he was one of the first operating 00:11:29.81\00:11:33.24 knees laparoscopy here so, he said I need to help 00:11:33.27\00:11:37.26 your church and Pastor Benjamin said what do 00:11:37.29\00:11:39.96 you mean? He said well you can use some money 00:11:39.99\00:11:41.45 for your church and he said well let me see how 00:11:41.48\00:11:44.37 can we channel that and he called the general 00:11:44.40\00:11:47.14 conference and sure enough they set a 00:11:47.17\00:11:48.55 department of channels contributions and Dr. Ray 00:11:48.58\00:11:52.88 came and said okay he wrote a check for the 00:11:52.91\00:11:55.42 Seventh-Day Adventist Church. We were awestruck 00:11:55.45\00:11:59.59 and then he comes every Sabbath, he goes 00:11:59.62\00:12:02.09 to his office there are no patients there that 00:12:02.12\00:12:04.68 attend to any of these clinics from the Sabbath, 00:12:04.71\00:12:06.39 but he comes every Sabbath and he just starts 00:12:06.42\00:12:08.90 from middle, he sees the Bible lessons or the 00:12:08.93\00:12:12.30 health lectures that we are giving and he just goes 00:12:12.33\00:12:15.66 right on, right on. And he told me the other day, you 00:12:15.69\00:12:20.05 go to Mexico every month I know because I 00:12:20.08\00:12:22.36 got to look for you, I have to ask you a few 00:12:22.39\00:12:24.06 questions and your staff tell me you're gone, so 00:12:24.09\00:12:26.67 you went to Mexico every month, tell me what do 00:12:26.70\00:12:27.95 you do there. So, tell him I will go to my school, I 00:12:27.98\00:12:30.20 will do this and that and he says I want to go to 00:12:30.23\00:12:32.46 your school, I think it's my karma he said, it's my 00:12:32.49\00:12:35.79 destiny my karma to help the Seventh-Day 00:12:35.82\00:12:38.88 Adventist church and I said yes that's your karma. 00:12:38.91\00:12:41.51 And we have kind of slowed down on this 00:12:41.54\00:12:46.48 well I think we have the right set up for him to 00:12:46.51\00:12:48.82 visit us next February in Matamoros and there is 00:12:48.85\00:12:52.87 another physician there; a graduate, we're gonna 00:12:52.90\00:12:56.29 work together, they both do knees, knee surgery. 00:12:56.32\00:12:59.40 So I don't know what else God is gonna do with us, 00:12:59.43\00:13:03.69 tell me God is not done with me, so everything 00:13:03.72\00:13:06.51 something else happens my heart 00:13:06.54\00:13:08.52 just, just melts down. What an inspiring story 00:13:08.55\00:13:14.45 people willing to let God use them to reach others, 00:13:14.48\00:13:17.49 being a member of ASI it's been my privilege to 00:13:17.52\00:13:20.52 meet people like Manuel and Esther Alva, people 00:13:20.55\00:13:23.80 who are excited about sharing Jesus Christ, both 00:13:23.83\00:13:26.85 at home and around the world. If you would like 00:13:26.88\00:13:30.20 to be an ASI member, give us a call at 301-680-6450 00:13:30.23\00:13:37.52 or visit www.asiministries.org. 00:13:37.55\00:13:42.64 ASI is a service organization that spans the globe. 00:13:42.67\00:13:46.95 Many of the other Adventists world divisions 00:13:46.98\00:13:49.79 have established an ASI of their own with 00:13:49.82\00:13:52.25 local chapters in numerous countries. 00:13:52.28\00:13:54.35 These organizations function much like ASI in 00:13:54.38\00:13:57.66 North America with conventions, lay-led 00:13:57.69\00:14:00.39 projects and more. If you are from outside North 00:14:00.42\00:14:03.97 America I encourage you to get in touch with ASI 00:14:04.00\00:14:07.00 in your area, for more information visit 00:14:07.03\00:14:10.27 www.asiministries.org. There is a passion that is 00:14:10.30\00:14:15.46 infectious at ASI. Everybody is so passion 00:14:15.49\00:14:20.81 about Jesus. It's a blessing every time 00:14:20.84\00:14:23.32 just to rub shoulders with people that are excited. 00:14:23.35\00:14:26.07 If you have a passion for Jesus, you are going to 00:14:26.10\00:14:28.41 find no place that I know of where you will find 00:14:28.44\00:14:30.96 more passion by more people than being at ASI. 00:14:30.99\00:14:34.26 The quiet hour is an ASI member ministry 00:14:40.76\00:14:46.93 involved in a wide variety of outreached projects 00:14:46.96\00:14:50.31 around the world, including evangelistic 00:14:50.34\00:14:52.86 programs, construction projects, medical clinics 00:14:52.89\00:14:55.73 and more. Over their 70 year history the quite 00:14:55.76\00:14:59.64 hour has been active in a 140 countries and each 00:14:59.67\00:15:03.49 year they send 400 Evangelism teams to 00:15:03.52\00:15:06.63 numerous sites around the world. Let's see how they 00:15:06.66\00:15:10.46 are sharing Christ in a world wide market place 00:15:10.49\00:15:15.61 Greetings everyone. It's your quiet hour family 00:15:22.79\00:15:27.61 coming by for an half hour of good faith. The 00:15:27.64\00:15:31.62 Quiet Hour program is dedicated to building 00:15:31.65\00:15:34.05 faith in the hearts of all the listeners. 00:15:34.08\00:15:36.91 In 1949, the quiet hour launched a television 00:15:36.94\00:15:40.12 program, the very first Seventh-Day Adventist 00:15:40.15\00:15:42.96 program to appear on this new medium. It's said 00:15:42.99\00:15:48.13 appeared to be a living room with a sofa and 00:15:48.16\00:15:50.34 coffee table, book shelves and movie screen for 00:15:50.37\00:15:53.25 showing graphics, not much has changed. 00:15:53.28\00:15:56.09 I was impacted at an early age, growing up right 00:15:56.12\00:16:01.80 within the media of television when it was at 00:16:01.83\00:16:06.59 a very at it's earliest stages in the San 00:16:06.62\00:16:11.56 Francisco bay area, when there are only 17000 00:16:11.59\00:16:15.75 television sets in the whole bay area. Grand 00:16:15.78\00:16:18.70 dad loved to tell stories and so I was captivated 00:16:18.73\00:16:24.45 by his story telling and as I grew older I was drawn 00:16:24.48\00:16:31.38 to what he was doing. I noticed from an early age 00:16:31.41\00:16:36.63 he had a passion; he had a love for the Lord Jesus 00:16:36.66\00:16:40.40 Christ. And that instilled in me a 00:16:40.43\00:16:43.87 desire to serve Jesus. The quiet hour started out 00:16:43.90\00:16:50.26 as a radio program and it was sort of like the 00:16:50.29\00:16:55.08 quiet hour with God, but you know when you have 00:16:55.11\00:16:59.19 a quiet hour with God each day it gives you a 00:16:59.22\00:17:04.46 burden, it gives you a mission, 00:17:04.49\00:17:05.96 it gives you a sense of purpose and the quiet 00:17:05.99\00:17:10.10 hour today is looking for ways to help people 00:17:10.13\00:17:13.94 fulfill that purpose, to reach out and do 00:17:13.97\00:17:17.15 something about what that quiet hour has 00:17:17.18\00:17:19.48 put in their hearts. It branched into mission 00:17:19.51\00:17:23.35 projects at an early stage back in the 50s, there 00:17:23.38\00:17:30.00 was a desire to help sponsor airplanes, but our first 00:17:30.03\00:17:35.13 major thrust for airplanes actually took place in the 00:17:35.16\00:17:38.80 early 60s. And so the quiet hour has been know 00:17:38.83\00:17:42.41 in many, many different countries today. You go 00:17:42.44\00:17:47.08 to some countries the quiet hour is known for 00:17:47.11\00:17:49.47 jungle chapels. Over the years we've probably 00:17:49.50\00:17:51.97 funded over 3400 jungle chapels and counting, 00:17:52.00\00:17:58.35 jeeps, tractors, motorboat launches, you know 00:17:58.38\00:18:03.95 medical launches to schools, to medical 00:18:03.98\00:18:07.93 clinics, to bicycles and motorcycles and funding 00:18:07.96\00:18:14.88 several million Bibles that have gone to many 00:18:14.91\00:18:19.14 different countries, actually we have been 00:18:19.17\00:18:21.66 working in over a 135 countries over these years 00:18:21.69\00:18:25.14 but the greatest things that has been going on 00:18:25.17\00:18:27.96 that is most exciting has been the evangelism. 00:18:27.99\00:18:31.95 Of all the things that my wife and I have 00:18:31.98\00:18:34.41 experienced in ministry and I've been a youth 00:18:34.44\00:18:36.64 pastor, I've been a teacher. The most life 00:18:36.67\00:18:40.57 changing experience we had was when we took 00:18:40.60\00:18:43.20 young people, high school kids, college 00:18:43.23\00:18:46.09 students during spring break, during the summer 00:18:46.12\00:18:49.37 on short term mission trips, building orphanages 00:18:49.40\00:18:53.02 or schools or churches and we saw more life 00:18:53.05\00:18:55.88 changing evidence in that week and a half or ten 00:18:55.91\00:18:59.13 days then in a year of church. And we came to 00:18:59.16\00:19:04.43 realize that was one of the really important elements 00:19:04.46\00:19:09.59 of ministry that so many young people don't 00:19:09.62\00:19:11.57 experience. And so as a director of youth 00:19:14.17\00:19:15.14 ministries and young adult ministries here at 00:19:15.15\00:19:16.12 the quiet hour, our main focus is to make and give 00:19:16.13\00:19:19.10 opportunities for young people, college students, 00:19:19.13\00:19:23.03 retirees, we have people of all ages with us, but to 00:19:23.06\00:19:26.35 get them out of their comfort zone and to 00:19:29.34\00:19:30.31 experience a mission adventure that really 00:19:30.32\00:19:32.97 wraps the whole gospel into a package of as you 00:19:33.00\00:19:37.40 do on a one of the least of these give them unto me. 00:19:37.43\00:19:40.57 Every year we send out close to 600 teams into; 00:19:40.60\00:19:44.69 in different countries about 46 countries a year 00:19:44.72\00:19:47.52 and it's my responsibility, I get the privilege of 00:19:47.55\00:19:50.49 helping these teams get ready to go on their trips. 00:19:50.52\00:19:53.45 I know from 2008 we actually sent out 667 00:19:53.48\00:19:58.99 individuals went out, that equates to that about it 00:19:59.02\00:20:03.90 was little over 400 individual teams. 00:20:03.93\00:20:07.17 The way that we are able to accomplish so much with 00:20:07.20\00:20:10.18 the dollars that our donors provide is through the use 00:20:10.21\00:20:12.89 of volunteers. We, the bulk of the evangelism 00:20:12.92\00:20:18.10 that is accomplished by the Quite Hour is 00:20:18.13\00:20:20.50 accomplished through the use of lay volunteers who 00:20:20.53\00:20:23.07 participate in mission trips that we send out 00:20:23.10\00:20:26.71 every year. In our youth missions projects 00:20:26.74\00:20:29.36 really have four components to it. Yes, 00:20:29.39\00:20:31.79 we do evangelism, we try to build either a 00:20:31.82\00:20:34.99 church or a school, a very strong medical 00:20:35.02\00:20:37.87 component and then we also have the 00:20:37.90\00:20:41.41 element of children's ministries as well. 00:20:41.44\00:20:43.35 The volunteers are the future of the Quite Hour 00:20:43.38\00:20:46.07 and we have noticed over the last year or two or 00:20:46.10\00:20:49.88 three an increasing demand for people to 00:20:49.91\00:20:53.51 participate in mission trips. They are beginning 00:20:53.54\00:20:56.40 to see the value of that more and more people are 00:20:56.43\00:20:59.58 being interested in being part of spreading the 00:20:59.61\00:21:03.71 gospel personally and the Quite Hour gives them an 00:21:03.74\00:21:07.77 opportunity to do that, it gives them an opportunity 00:21:07.80\00:21:10.60 to do that in a low risk environment. They can be 00:21:10.63\00:21:14.89 part of a team at any level, they can be just a 00:21:14.92\00:21:17.67 support staff who goes along and washes dishes. 00:21:17.70\00:21:19.67 They can be a preacher who goes and speaks 00:21:19.70\00:21:23.01 before a group of a 100 or 500 or 2000. They can do 00:21:23.04\00:21:27.56 a children's program; so there are plenty of 00:21:27.59\00:21:30.06 opportunities for volunteers, they can be 00:21:30.09\00:21:32.18 any age we have had preachers as young as 11 00:21:32.21\00:21:35.62 and as old as 80. As a member of ASI I feel like 00:21:35.65\00:21:39.79 our responsibility is not so much to see what can 00:21:39.82\00:21:43.24 ASI do for us, but what we as a member of ASI can 00:21:43.27\00:21:47.03 do for the other members of ASI. 00:21:47.06\00:21:52.30 The Quite Hour benefits and the Quite Hour 00:21:52.33\00:21:54.60 contributes, but as an organization, as a 00:21:54.63\00:21:58.04 ministry we see ourselves as connecting people who 00:21:58.07\00:22:03.36 would like to do something for God either 00:22:03.39\00:22:06.13 they can go out on a trip with us to some place in 00:22:06.16\00:22:10.31 the world. Or if may be they can't do that they can 00:22:10.34\00:22:15.04 contribute funds to make it possible for others 00:22:15.07\00:22:17.50 to go out. I believe that and I feel that 00:22:17.53\00:22:20.72 the Quite Hour's role with ASI is to help the 00:22:20.75\00:22:25.24 ASI members grow and become more involved 00:22:25.27\00:22:31.55 with evangelism whether here in the United states 00:22:31.58\00:22:34.28 or overseas and obviously we are more 00:22:34.31\00:22:36.87 concentrated, our work is more overseas so we can 00:22:36.90\00:22:39.88 get them to you know partner with us. Many of 00:22:39.91\00:22:45.38 the ASI members like Gospel outreach, we 00:22:45.41\00:22:49.21 partnership with Gospel Outreach, Adventist 00:22:49.24\00:22:52.97 World Aviation, we are partners with them, many 00:22:53.00\00:22:55.49 of the ASI members we do partnership with them 00:22:55.52\00:22:59.60 to help spread the word. We know that the only 00:22:59.63\00:23:02.49 way the work is going to be finished is to do 00:23:02.52\00:23:05.51 united, collaborative efforts, networking 00:23:05.54\00:23:09.96 together in a common cause and that is to 00:23:09.99\00:23:13.94 present Christ to the world. As a youth pastor, 00:23:13.97\00:23:18.88 as a teacher, probably one of my greatest 00:23:18.91\00:23:21.00 concerns here in America is the culture of greed 00:23:21.03\00:23:23.30 that we live in. And especially the 00:23:23.33\00:23:25.92 younger generation, they are consumed with this 00:23:25.95\00:23:28.03 notion and that they've got to have it bigger, 00:23:28.06\00:23:29.75 better and faster and that's what the advertising 00:23:29.78\00:23:32.00 agencies keep promoting. When you take a young 00:23:32.03\00:23:35.54 person from that kind of a culture and you 00:23:35.57\00:23:39.07 intentionally place him in a very poor environment 00:23:39.10\00:23:41.57 where there is a lot of poverty and lot of great 00:23:41.60\00:23:43.08 need something really wonderful happens. 00:23:43.11\00:23:46.32 And when the kids are going I hear you know I 00:23:46.35\00:23:48.71 really don't want to go but my mom and dad are 00:23:48.74\00:23:50.52 sending me but then when they come back, they are 00:23:50.55\00:23:53.35 so excited and found out they were the ones that 00:23:53.38\00:23:57.44 were actually baptized you know. So, it's hard to 00:23:57.47\00:24:02.22 go to a mission field and work with the people and 00:24:02.25\00:24:07.66 the children and see the way that they're living 00:24:07.69\00:24:10.43 and not be changed and realize that you; God has 00:24:10.46\00:24:14.33 really blessed you and that you have so much to 00:24:14.36\00:24:16.38 give and the young people that come back, 00:24:16.41\00:24:19.23 their lives are changed I know I saw it in my own 00:24:19.26\00:24:23.61 life, you know I was born and raised an Seventh- 00:24:23.64\00:24:26.57 Day Adventist but it wasn't until I actually 00:24:26.60\00:24:29.89 went and preached my own series of meetings in 00:24:29.92\00:24:32.20 Rwanda, in Africa that the Adventist message 00:24:32.23\00:24:36.89 went from my head to my heart. 00:24:36.92\00:24:39.30 My wife Jackie Tucker are both trained at the 00:24:39.33\00:24:42.77 Lions Club eye clinic down in Midland, Texas 00:24:42.80\00:24:47.48 where all those glasses that you throw away and 00:24:47.51\00:24:50.85 at you know the Wal-Mart or the stores where 00:24:50.88\00:24:53.89 they collect these glasses, those are all sorted and 00:24:53.92\00:24:57.11 they are cleaned and they're tagged as to the 00:24:57.14\00:24:59.39 prescription and organizations like the 00:24:59.42\00:25:02.26 Quiet Hour, they give us thousands of pairs of 00:25:02.29\00:25:05.28 glasses every year and so we go to these very 00:25:05.31\00:25:08.03 remote parts of some of these communities and 00:25:08.06\00:25:10.70 we offer eye clinics, free glass; free eye 00:25:10.73\00:25:14.39 examinations and then we'll give them free 00:25:14.42\00:25:16.21 glasses. Well you have 100s of people like that 00:25:16.24\00:25:18.74 that haven't been able to read clearly in years but 00:25:18.77\00:25:24.05 my wife is very gifted at what she does in that, she 00:25:24.08\00:25:29.14 shared this story of this one little boy that came to 00:25:29.17\00:25:31.97 the clinic and had very poor eye sight. Couldn't 00:25:32.00\00:25:37.19 even read the big letter E in the bottom of the chart 00:25:37.22\00:25:39.70 from fairly close range, so he was probably 00:25:39.73\00:25:43.16 legally blind. Well let's face it, if you don't have a 00:25:43.19\00:25:46.51 skill to be able to read you are going to be 00:25:46.54\00:25:49.12 handicapped going through life and they 00:25:49.15\00:25:51.88 went into the stock room where we have all the 00:25:51.91\00:25:55.20 glasses, trying to find a very, very strong 00:25:55.23\00:25:58.68 prescription for this young man; couldn't find 00:25:58.71\00:26:01.76 it, they went back out reexamined his eyes 00:26:01.79\00:26:06.89 again and my wife blessed her heart she is a 00:26:06.92\00:26:10.15 very spiritual person. She gathered the team 00:26:10.18\00:26:13.90 together and said we need to pray, we can find 00:26:13.93\00:26:17.94 a pair of glasses for this little boy. I guess they have 00:26:17.97\00:26:22.38 been searching every bag, prescriptions, below and 00:26:22.41\00:26:25.61 above what they thought was required. My wife 00:26:25.64\00:26:28.95 went back to the bag that she knew the prescription 00:26:28.98\00:26:32.02 should be in that particular bag and 00:26:32.05\00:26:34.36 there at the top, the very top of that bag was a 00:26:34.39\00:26:38.43 pair of child's glasses in the exact prescription. 00:26:38.46\00:26:42.66 That little boy went out of there, you can just 00:26:42.69\00:26:48.56 imagine if you're blind and now you are able to 00:26:48.59\00:26:50.16 see I mean he was pointing out the leaves 00:26:50.19\00:26:51.65 in the tree and he was pointing out to his mother 00:26:51.68\00:26:53.75 that you know that the birds that were singing 00:26:53.78\00:26:55.14 and look at this and it was truly one of those 00:26:55.17\00:26:59.32 experiences that I am sure Jesus had many times 00:26:59.35\00:27:02.33 when he you know he restored the sight to the 00:27:02.36\00:27:05.00 blind or he healed a leper. You know we had that 00:27:05.03\00:27:07.75 kind of a moment that God who touched the 00:27:07.78\00:27:11.56 eyes of the blind you know 2000 years ago that 00:27:11.59\00:27:14.72 God still performs miracles in other ways 00:27:14.75\00:27:17.13 and those are the kind of experiences 00:27:17.16\00:27:18.94 that just keep us going. It's exciting to see lay 00:27:18.97\00:27:23.17 people involved in active evangelism and the 00:27:23.20\00:27:26.09 precious people they are bringing into the family 00:27:26.12\00:27:28.34 of God.
