ASI is a Ministry that's networking all these 00:00:01.98\00:00:02.95 different ministries together with the church 00:00:02.96\00:00:05.47 and lay people. Being involved with ASI, 00:00:05.50\00:00:06.67 meeting other people. ASI convention is 00:00:06.70\00:00:08.55 an excellent opportunity, just a great opportunity. 00:00:08.58\00:00:11.64 In ASI, there is a particular fellow. 00:00:11.67\00:00:14.36 ASI is really the stamp, it's the glue that holds 00:00:14.39\00:00:16.83 all the ministries together. 00:00:16.86\00:00:18.30 Welcome to ASI Video Magazine, I am 00:00:27.00\00:00:29.39 Dan Houghton. I have been an ASI member 00:00:29.42\00:00:31.96 for many years now and I'm continually amazed 00:00:31.99\00:00:35.34 by the wide variety of affective ministries that 00:00:35.37\00:00:38.44 ASI members are involved in. No matter 00:00:38.47\00:00:41.21 where they are or what they do. ASI members 00:00:41.24\00:00:44.71 are committed to sharing Christ in the market place. 00:00:44.74\00:00:47.73 Today we are going to meet two ASI members 00:00:48.35\00:00:51.27 who exemplify that commitment. 00:00:51.30\00:00:53.47 Darry Campbell, who lives in Wisconsin and 00:00:54.00\00:00:56.75 is the plant manager for Roads International 00:00:56.78\00:00:59.10 a distributor of frozen bread products. 00:00:59.13\00:01:01.56 Darry is active in evangelism at home 00:01:02.39\00:01:04.28 right in Wisconsin. And he and his wife give 00:01:04.31\00:01:07.14 Bible studies to numerous individuals. 00:01:07.17\00:01:09.45 For a number of years now Darry and his wife 00:01:10.40\00:01:13.15 have also held evangelistic meetings in 00:01:13.18\00:01:15.47 Thailand resulting in more than 200 baptisms. 00:01:15.50\00:01:19.94 We'd like to welcome each of you here we 00:01:19.97\00:01:21.86 have, have a large group from Madison. 00:01:21.89\00:01:24.70 My old friend Gerard Collins has visited us a 00:01:26.13\00:01:30.67 couple times and he brought some friends 00:01:30.70\00:01:33.50 and I think they are going to be sharing 00:01:33.53\00:01:37.02 some things with us this afternoon not with the 00:01:37.05\00:01:41.07 Church but giving a testimony of some of 00:01:41.10\00:01:45.35 the work that's been happening in Madison. 00:01:45.38\00:01:47.26 How many of you heard about ASI? ASI stands 00:01:47.29\00:01:51.64 for Adventist-Layman's Services and Industries. 00:01:51.67\00:01:54.95 You know some of us are officially ASI 00:01:55.73\00:01:59.44 members, but in truth we are all ASI members. 00:01:59.47\00:02:03.85 The model of ASI is sharing God in the 00:02:04.64\00:02:07.68 market place. And the market place is 00:02:07.71\00:02:10.55 whatever we are and some of you might say 00:02:10.58\00:02:14.50 well not in business, I don't have but if you go 00:02:14.53\00:02:18.07 out to the store and buy groceries 00:02:18.10\00:02:20.77 that's your market place. 00:02:20.80\00:02:21.99 In 1986 three families from the Wisconsin 00:02:22.26\00:02:27.15 Academy church decided to come down 00:02:27.18\00:02:31.15 and plant a church here in Beaver Dam. 00:02:31.18\00:02:34.38 Of course we were flushed with money, we 00:02:34.41\00:02:37.04 had $35 in the bank as a congregation. 00:02:37.07\00:02:40.57 And, but we wrote an offer, we offered them 00:02:41.31\00:02:45.47 $35,000 for the building and amazingly they 00:02:45.50\00:02:50.16 accepted that and then the conference was 00:02:50.19\00:02:54.58 working with us but told us that we would 00:02:54.61\00:02:57.38 have to have two thirds of the money before we 00:02:57.41\00:03:01.07 could go ahead with the transaction. 00:03:01.10\00:03:03.12 So, we had a fundraising campaign and within 90 00:03:03.74\00:03:07.02 days we had raised $30000, had the building 00:03:07.05\00:03:11.34 almost paid for. And moved in and this 00:03:11.37\00:03:17.11 building has been serving this congregation 00:03:17.14\00:03:19.83 now for 21 years. Interestingly enough the 00:03:19.86\00:03:24.10 three families that started the church once 00:03:24.13\00:03:29.25 the church was well grounded, we all left 00:03:29.28\00:03:34.46 and went to other places and other people have 00:03:34.49\00:03:39.16 kept this church going over the past 20 years. 00:03:39.19\00:03:42.33 But, over a period of time people moved 00:03:43.02\00:03:46.43 away, some of the elderly members have 00:03:46.46\00:03:49.50 passed on and membership was down to 24 people, but 00:03:49.53\00:03:55.48 they had an attendance of somewhere around 00:03:56.53\00:03:59.15 10 to 15 people per week. But, they were fading. 00:03:59.18\00:04:04.61 And Jenny and I made the decision to move 00:04:05.80\00:04:09.25 back and shortly after we moved back, one of 00:04:09.28\00:04:13.00 the other original families also moved back with us. 00:04:13.03\00:04:17.93 And we've had some interesting experiences since then. 00:04:18.65\00:04:25.17 The membership on the day that we moved back was 24. 00:04:26.39\00:04:29.91 Now with some families that are transferring 00:04:30.65\00:04:34.15 in and joining our church our membership's up to 46. 00:04:34.18\00:04:39.85 A few years ago if you would have attended 00:04:39.88\00:04:42.16 you would have said this church is you know 00:04:42.19\00:04:44.96 on its way to locking its doors. And we were 00:04:44.99\00:04:47.72 really almost in need of a new church plant here. 00:04:47.75\00:04:51.77 I mean it got down to that, a few people and 00:04:51.93\00:04:56.48 they were you know not in the best of health and 00:04:56.51\00:04:59.61 getting up in age and yet they were starved 00:05:00.22\00:05:04.59 people that just kept the faith and kept hoping 00:05:04.62\00:05:10.42 and kept praying and God heard those prayers. 00:05:10.45\00:05:14.21 And I suppose that can be inspiring to 00:05:15.00\00:05:16.64 somebody out there who is in a church 00:05:16.67\00:05:18.23 somewhere in a smallest town and 00:05:18.26\00:05:20.86 things don't seem to be happening but man, 00:05:20.89\00:05:24.69 if you're steadfast I think, and hang in there 00:05:24.72\00:05:27.93 eventually something good is gonna happen. 00:05:27.96\00:05:30.17 We are currently holding a prophecy 00:05:30.20\00:05:32.62 seminar, our expectations are that we will baptize 00:05:32.65\00:05:36.55 10 to 12 people from the seminar and I have 00:05:37.43\00:05:42.26 commitments from several already. 00:05:42.29\00:05:45.47 I think that a church does best in its 00:05:45.50\00:05:47.88 healthiest when its working for others, 00:05:47.91\00:05:49.70 you know to have a mission, because when 00:05:50.32\00:05:54.32 you don't have that you just start looking 00:05:54.35\00:05:56.36 inward and you know there is always inter 00:05:56.39\00:05:58.95 relational problems that can rise up and when 00:05:58.98\00:06:01.47 you press together to do something for God, you 00:06:01.50\00:06:03.97 put that stuff away and realize, you know its 00:06:04.00\00:06:06.61 just not important, we've got big mountains 00:06:06.64\00:06:09.55 to climb, you know we have got something 00:06:09.58\00:06:11.22 important to do. Originally I started out 00:06:11.25\00:06:13.54 because Shawn and I we're roommates and he 00:06:13.57\00:06:17.12 sort of; I noticed that he sort of had an interest in 00:06:17.15\00:06:20.35 the Bible and in God in general. 00:06:20.38\00:06:21.74 So, we conducted our own some sort of mini 00:06:22.28\00:06:24.71 Bible studies, but we both quickly realized 00:06:24.74\00:06:27.95 that we are both little, I guess amateurs analysis 00:06:27.98\00:06:33.13 to the Bible scriptures. So, instead of fumbling 00:06:33.16\00:06:37.35 through scriptures we ended up contacting 00:06:37.38\00:06:39.50 Gerard who we knew was more well versed 00:06:39.53\00:06:42.92 in the scriptures. Well, since I was a kid 00:06:42.95\00:06:44.87 I've been pretty interested in religions 00:06:44.90\00:06:46.74 and just meaning of life in general. So, I've been 00:06:46.77\00:06:48.98 reading different kind of books. My parents 00:06:49.01\00:06:51.54 brought back books of Buddhism, of books of 00:06:51.57\00:06:54.25 evolution from America. So, since I was a kid 00:06:54.28\00:06:58.10 I was; I have been pretty interested, but 00:06:58.13\00:06:59.65 over years my interest only grew more. 00:06:59.68\00:07:01.68 So, in college I started studying with Sabbath 00:07:01.71\00:07:04.90 because he was Adventist and I wasn't at the time. 00:07:04.93\00:07:07.71 So, well there were some question he 00:07:08.68\00:07:10.58 couldn't clearly answer me. So, eventually that's 00:07:10.61\00:07:12.71 why as he has mentioned we went to Jerry. 00:07:12.74\00:07:14.63 Darry Campbell who was a member and he 00:07:15.63\00:07:18.60 was the head elder at the church where I'm 00:07:18.63\00:07:21.19 now a member, in Madison, Wisconsin. 00:07:21.22\00:07:23.52 He came to Madison, Madison East Seventh 00:07:23.94\00:07:28.83 Day Adventist church and give a presentation 00:07:28.86\00:07:30.83 with reference to these Bible studies. 00:07:31.44\00:07:33.75 He is a member of ASI and he, myself and 00:07:34.05\00:07:39.63 several others went to this presentation that 00:07:39.66\00:07:41.62 elder Campbell give and after the presentation we 00:07:42.02\00:07:44.55 were each getting a free set of the new 00:07:44.58\00:07:46.52 beginnings DVD Bible studies. And we were encouraged 00:07:46.55\00:07:50.18 to begin our own Bible study group. 00:07:50.21\00:07:51.67 And shortly after that Sabbath who I knew 00:07:52.08\00:07:54.51 from campus before and from church. 00:07:54.54\00:07:56.95 He called me, contacted me and told me that a 00:07:58.05\00:08:01.63 friend of his Shawn, who was interest in 00:08:01.66\00:08:06.13 learning more about the Bible wanted to start a 00:08:06.16\00:08:07.84 Bible study and so, they began coming over to 00:08:07.87\00:08:12.01 my apartment on Friday evenings and we began 00:08:12.04\00:08:15.11 watching these DVDs. We were just looking 00:08:15.14\00:08:19.20 for DVD training and using the new beginning 00:08:19.23\00:08:25.24 series to give Bible studies to start a small 00:08:25.27\00:08:28.65 group but that small group has grown from 00:08:28.68\00:08:32.71 just two people taking Bible studies with 00:08:33.67\00:08:36.66 Gerard into campus ministry that is now a 00:08:36.69\00:08:41.78 certified ministry on campus. Recently, we got our 00:08:43.21\00:08:49.02 student organization registered on campus at 00:08:49.05\00:08:52.23 the University of Wisconsin, Madison. 00:08:52.26\00:08:54.05 The name is Campus Hope and the word 00:08:54.55\00:08:58.29 Hope is an acronym standing representing 00:08:58.32\00:09:01.49 Helping Others Prepare for Eternity. 00:09:01.52\00:09:04.35 That name we borrowed from the Campus Hope 00:09:04.91\00:09:07.39 Group on the University of Michigan. 00:09:07.42\00:09:08.97 With the involvement of other people, it has 00:09:09.00\00:09:13.23 now grown into what they call WYC 00:09:13.26\00:09:16.59 Wisconsin Youth Congress and they had 00:09:17.71\00:09:21.43 their first meeting this past summer in August 00:09:21.46\00:09:26.01 and I understand they had about 60 attendees 00:09:26.40\00:09:30.14 and they continue to have their group 00:09:30.82\00:09:33.64 meetings and continuing to play in other activates 00:09:33.67\00:09:37.11 and just sharing the gospel there on the 00:09:37.14\00:09:40.13 campus of the UW. It's funny because when 00:09:40.16\00:09:45.23 Darry does the DVD training, he always 00:09:45.26\00:09:49.22 asked that the individuals in his crew, 00:09:49.25\00:09:52.46 in the seminar to write down at least 10 names 00:09:52.49\00:09:55.40 to start praying for that they will have an 00:09:55.43\00:09:57.48 opportunity to reach out to and Darry and I both 00:09:57.51\00:10:01.21 make a need list for each seminar ourselves 00:10:01.65\00:10:05.18 to start praying about. We had also put our 00:10:05.21\00:10:07.30 daughter Karen on the list. We finished the training 00:10:07.33\00:10:12.78 that evening at 7'O clock came home, went 00:10:12.81\00:10:16.19 to bed. The next morning we received a 00:10:16.22\00:10:19.35 call from Karen and her first words were, Dad 00:10:19.38\00:10:24.70 when can we start Bible studies? 00:10:24.73\00:10:26.79 We've put down the drinking, the smokings, 00:10:27.55\00:10:31.10 a little struggle. And John's ask for the 00:10:31.13\00:10:35.92 Sabbaths off and took him a couple weeks, but 00:10:35.95\00:10:41.23 he finally got that taken care of and we have our 00:10:41.26\00:10:47.67 children every other weekend and we try to 00:10:47.70\00:10:49.68 be here every week. Bring the two boys to church. 00:10:49.71\00:10:53.50 And like Dad said we want to be baptized 00:10:56.06\00:10:59.25 and married on the same day. 00:10:59.28\00:11:01.44 We attended the National Convention in 00:11:02.46\00:11:05.89 Albuquerque, New Mexico several years ago, 00:11:05.92\00:11:09.76 on the way to the hotel, my son said, dad 00:11:10.81\00:11:16.14 how much does it cost to attend the ASI convention. 00:11:16.17\00:11:20.45 And I said well typically with a flight for both of us, 00:11:21.52\00:11:24.95 renting a car, the cost of the hotel, the cost of 00:11:24.98\00:11:30.04 registration it's probably about $2000 to attended 00:11:30.07\00:11:35.51 the meeting. And he said why on earth 00:11:35.54\00:11:38.66 would you spend $2000 just to come and sit in 00:11:38.69\00:11:42.19 meetings. And I said, well come and attended 00:11:42.22\00:11:46.01 the meetings, then afterwards ask me that 00:11:46.04\00:11:48.71 question again. On Friday evening, the next 00:11:48.74\00:11:52.80 evening the Youth for Jesus young people 00:11:52.83\00:11:58.08 were sharing their experiences and there 00:11:58.11\00:12:02.09 was a young girl I believe she was a sophomore 00:12:02.12\00:12:05.07 and a candidate, and 15 years old and she related how 00:12:05.10\00:12:11.64 she had come to Youth for Jesus just because 00:12:11.67\00:12:15.87 some of her friends were coming, she had 00:12:15.90\00:12:19.00 no idea that she would end being the speaker at 00:12:19.03\00:12:22.21 her venue and she shared her experiences 00:12:22.24\00:12:26.68 and the number of people that had been 00:12:26.71\00:12:28.60 baptized and what an amazing experience it 00:12:28.63\00:12:32.04 had been in her life. And when she was done 00:12:35.84\00:12:36.81 the moderator asked her what do you have to say 00:12:36.82\00:12:40.39 to our group of ASI members and she 00:12:40.42\00:12:43.65 looked out at the audience and she said 00:12:43.68\00:12:45.61 I'm just a little girl, just 15 years old, this is 00:12:46.19\00:12:49.95 what I've done, what have you been doing? 00:12:49.98\00:12:52.33 And I looked over at my son and the tears 00:12:53.65\00:12:57.09 were running down his cheeks. I asked him do you 00:12:57.12\00:13:03.73 wanna ask me that question now. 00:13:03.76\00:13:05.72 And he said, no but I do have another question 00:13:06.85\00:13:11.01 for you. Where was ASI when I was a teenager? 00:13:11.04\00:13:15.38 Would you know about it then? 00:13:16.53\00:13:17.80 Whatever our strengths and weakness, God is 00:13:21.21\00:13:23.97 able to use us to reach others for him, if only 00:13:24.00\00:13:27.52 we are willing. And when we do get out of 00:13:27.55\00:13:29.90 our comfort zones God is able to do 00:13:29.93\00:13:32.32 tremendous things. Our five loaves and two 00:13:32.35\00:13:35.43 fishes are a limitless supply to God. 00:13:35.46\00:13:37.89 ASI is made up of members like Darry Campbell 00:13:38.70\00:13:41.41 who are willing to step out in faith and tell the 00:13:41.90\00:13:44.43 world about Jesus. The happiness books have 00:13:44.46\00:13:48.63 been an ongoing ASI projects for more than 00:13:48.66\00:13:50.90 20 years. Through this project ASI sponsors 00:13:50.93\00:13:54.86 the printing of spirit of prophecy books which 00:13:54.89\00:13:57.63 are then sold at minimum cost. 00:13:57.66\00:13:59.39 They provide individuals with an inexpensive 00:14:00.02\00:14:02.75 and attractive way to witness to friends and 00:14:02.78\00:14:05.04 neighbors. Today more than five million 00:14:05.07\00:14:08.81 happiness books have been distributed. 00:14:08.84\00:14:10.45 For ordering information contact your local 00:14:11.19\00:14:14.02 Adventist book center. Sharing Christ in the 00:14:14.05\00:14:16.98 market place is not just for the adults, but it's 00:14:17.01\00:14:18.84 for the young people too. ASI gives them an 00:14:18.87\00:14:20.84 opportunity to come to the forefront and use 00:14:20.87\00:14:22.96 their talents and ability that God has given. 00:14:22.99\00:14:24.73 They learned that God can use them. 00:14:24.76\00:14:26.74 They are not too young. You see God using you 00:14:26.77\00:14:29.92 to impact other people's lives. 00:14:29.95\00:14:31.64 I find it difficult to find something more 00:14:31.67\00:14:33.79 effective then what the Youth for Jesus is doing today. 00:14:33.82\00:14:36.63 Seeing the immense poverty and need in Haiti, 00:14:46.69\00:14:49.28 Reg King was profoundly touched. 00:14:50.15\00:14:52.40 So, in 1992 he started the mission in that 00:14:53.12\00:14:56.41 country. Today Haiti mission outreach has a 00:14:56.44\00:15:00.12 clinic, a dental office and some schools in Haiti. 00:15:00.15\00:15:03.34 They've also drilled wells, set up solar panels and 00:15:04.03\00:15:07.38 distributed humanitarian supplies. Let's find 00:15:07.41\00:15:11.06 out more about Reg and the Haiti mission outreach. 00:15:11.09\00:15:14.80 Out in the village of Arno our clinic is this is 00:15:15.67\00:15:19.41 a typical local housing. It goes from this to worse. 00:15:19.44\00:15:24.81 A lot of cardboard and sheet metal enclosures 00:15:25.66\00:15:30.14 very, very primitive but, look at the smiles on 00:15:30.17\00:15:36.17 these kids. I mean, these kids are, they 00:15:36.20\00:15:39.28 have nothing and they're happy, so we 00:15:39.31\00:15:43.14 have a lot to learn; learn from these people. 00:15:43.17\00:15:47.81 We were on a windsurfing trip my family in to 00:15:47.84\00:15:50.92 Dominican Republic having a great time and 00:15:50.95\00:15:53.65 they were going out to the village there it's a 00:15:53.68\00:15:56.00 poor area also. And we said you know we 00:15:56.03\00:15:58.64 should build a clinic in one of these villages. 00:15:58.67\00:16:00.65 Because you know there's a lot of medical 00:16:00.68\00:16:02.23 in the Adventist circles there is a lot of medical 00:16:02.81\00:16:05.38 people that are very talented that would like 00:16:05.41\00:16:08.78 to help in these areas if you just have a program 00:16:08.81\00:16:11.85 that you can define for them they'll get involved in it. 00:16:11.88\00:16:14.19 And that's part of the engineering side too 00:16:14.40\00:16:16.28 that we connect people together, people and 00:16:16.31\00:16:19.31 resources in terms of projects. So, it was a 00:16:19.34\00:16:21.62 natural fit when we started getting involved 00:16:21.65\00:16:23.57 and we said as a family lets do something like 00:16:24.35\00:16:27.65 this not just be ministered to in the 00:16:27.68\00:16:31.27 church every week, let's get got some we can put 00:16:31.30\00:16:33.96 some of the talents and the things we know to work. 00:16:33.99\00:16:36.54 Then I got a call from a man named Max Church 00:16:37.61\00:16:40.74 who had an orphanage in Haiti. He is actually 00:16:40.77\00:16:43.78 on one of these pictures here, right here, 00:16:43.81\00:16:46.89 Max Church, he started an orphanage in Haiti 00:16:48.71\00:16:50.67 years ago, was fluent in French. But, I went to 00:16:50.70\00:16:55.45 visit him in the country. He invited me down 00:16:55.48\00:16:58.73 there. And I was so taken by the poverty, 00:16:58.76\00:17:05.00 I mean Dominican Republic is a poor country, 00:17:05.03\00:17:08.07 but Haiti is the extreme of poverty. 00:17:08.42\00:17:12.30 80% unemployment, 60% literacy, one meal a day. 00:17:14.05\00:17:19.47 This isn't because that's, they are eating this big meal, 00:17:19.76\00:17:22.07 it's a one meal a day country. 00:17:22.10\00:17:23.59 They have half the food that they need and so 00:17:23.62\00:17:26.86 I'm seeing this as I'm their and I come back 00:17:26.89\00:17:29.47 from Haiti and I'm thinking wow! We're 00:17:29.50\00:17:32.74 gonna do something in Haiti. Originally we went and 00:17:32.77\00:17:34.76 drilled some wells out in these remote villages 00:17:34.79\00:17:38.45 and put solar pumps on them. We had one well running 00:17:38.92\00:17:42.92 in one village area for 10 years, it's pumped 00:17:42.95\00:17:45.99 millions of gallons water. Pumps always when the 00:17:46.02\00:17:48.62 sun is out. People under with buckets, 00:17:48.65\00:17:50.45 five gallon buckets under that spigot all day 00:17:50.48\00:17:52.35 long, of course at nights you don't have to worry 00:17:52.38\00:17:55.32 about a storage tank, just let it pump in the 00:17:55.35\00:17:57.20 day time. We followed that with a clinic in that 00:17:57.23\00:17:59.52 area. The people were asking us could you 00:17:59.55\00:18:04.26 help us with medical clinic, there was no 00:18:04.29\00:18:05.99 medical care whatsoever nothing, expect the 00:18:06.02\00:18:08.66 Voodoo doctor. And so you are in an area I've 00:18:08.69\00:18:11.97 taken doctors that have been in parts of Africa 00:18:12.00\00:18:14.97 and other places and they just said Reg, 00:18:15.00\00:18:16.37 we have no idea how bad it is in these outline 00:18:16.40\00:18:20.13 villagers. This is really early stages of clinic, 00:18:20.16\00:18:22.78 but it sits on a dirt road that people pass by so 00:18:22.81\00:18:29.25 it's well known, you know, well known location 00:18:29.28\00:18:31.84 there where everybody sees it. 00:18:31.87\00:18:33.21 Some of the things that have really been exacting 00:18:34.50\00:18:36.27 about that clinic. We have a Haitian 00:18:36.30\00:18:38.13 administrative nurse named Annie Prevel. 00:18:39.34\00:18:42.93 She is so amazing, she follows and goes after 00:18:43.86\00:18:48.05 every program she can connect with. 00:18:48.08\00:18:49.94 She gets a doctor from the government, if they 00:18:50.46\00:18:54.01 have a doctor, an intern doctor to come out for a year. 00:18:54.04\00:18:56.44 But, the other things that she has done that's 00:18:56.81\00:18:58.61 really amazing, I didn't think would be possible 00:18:58.64\00:19:00.56 in this remote area. She went and took TB training, 00:19:00.59\00:19:04.54 how to evaluate a patient and cure the patient. 00:19:05.94\00:19:08.63 The first time she screened these village, 00:19:09.20\00:19:11.00 the village that our clinic is in, in Arno, 00:19:11.35\00:19:14.81 she had like 14 patients that had TB in that one village. 00:19:14.84\00:19:19.07 Now you gotta realize how TB spread and 00:19:19.66\00:19:22.14 these people have it in their little hut and they 00:19:22.17\00:19:23.72 don't know, so it's going through the whole family. 00:19:23.75\00:19:25.51 Well, she is curing those people, I've had pictures 00:19:26.37\00:19:29.99 of them and I tell them you know you're 00:19:30.02\00:19:32.45 Lazarus, you've been raised from the dead. 00:19:32.48\00:19:34.00 This was a death sentence until Annie got the training. 00:19:34.03\00:19:37.53 This man not a very picture but this man 00:19:37.56\00:19:40.78 right here is Pastor Victor, amazing man. 00:19:40.81\00:19:46.18 We worked out there for number of years and 00:19:46.21\00:19:47.89 didn't know there was an Adventist out there 00:19:47.92\00:19:49.98 and then we saw a little sign up by a dirt floor 00:19:50.01\00:19:52.63 church and it said Temple Adventist. 00:19:52.66\00:19:55.03 He and his wife had gone picked that area to 00:19:56.52\00:19:59.96 start a little church. His salary was $11 a month. 00:19:59.99\00:20:04.61 And he had a little church going and a 00:20:04.64\00:20:07.47 school with 60 students in it. Dirt floor and that's 00:20:07.50\00:20:11.21 how we got involved in schools out there, when 00:20:11.24\00:20:13.95 we realized this man at $11 a month was dedicated 00:20:13.98\00:20:19.52 to stay out there with his wife and do something. 00:20:19.55\00:20:22.00 The students are so poor there they couldn't 00:20:22.03\00:20:24.31 pay tuition. The tuition rate in the schools we 00:20:24.34\00:20:26.82 have out there is a $1.50 US for the year. 00:20:26.85\00:20:32.42 And one third of the people can pay it. 00:20:33.87\00:20:35.18 So, he was running this little school on nothing. 00:20:35.71\00:20:38.62 Here is his little church and school, dirt floor 00:20:38.65\00:20:41.84 you can see it here, very, very simple. 00:20:42.67\00:20:44.68 And we took that over and rebuilt that building 00:20:45.27\00:20:49.25 and made it a school and church with 00:20:49.28\00:20:51.76 concrete floor and new walls, well here is a 00:20:51.79\00:20:55.32 picture of it, after we had worked on making 00:20:55.35\00:20:58.87 concrete, so we put a program around him, 00:20:58.90\00:21:03.44 he now has a school with 300 students in it. 00:21:03.47\00:21:05.71 The first time we stopped with some 00:21:06.54\00:21:10.30 support for his school year we said Pastor Victor, 00:21:10.33\00:21:13.84 we went back and told your story at our church 00:21:14.54\00:21:17.21 and there people want to help you prove your 00:21:17.24\00:21:20.52 program, stabilize your teachers by having a 00:21:20.55\00:21:23.64 salary that you can depend on. He danced 00:21:23.67\00:21:27.30 around my little pick up truck with his hands in 00:21:27.33\00:21:29.09 the air and just danced around praising God 00:21:29.12\00:21:31.03 going around the pick up, he was so excited 00:21:31.06\00:21:33.49 that somebody would help him, he never 00:21:33.62\00:21:35.39 asked for help. He never has asked for help ever. 00:21:35.42\00:21:38.76 He is just one of those bright stories of people 00:21:39.59\00:21:42.92 that you run into who are dedicated, who are 00:21:42.95\00:21:44.89 making a difference and I will show our ready 00:21:44.92\00:21:47.47 mix concrete crew. We are building a school 00:21:47.50\00:21:50.13 here and like I said with the unemployment like 00:21:50.16\00:21:54.11 it is I can hire 50 men, 25 whatever they come 00:21:54.14\00:21:58.01 bare foot, mixed concrete on ground and 00:21:58.04\00:22:00.86 they will bucket to the forums, 12 yards a day 00:22:00.89\00:22:04.47 we'll mix on the ground and carry to the forums 00:22:04.50\00:22:07.76 in these five gallon buckets. Now move these picture 00:22:07.79\00:22:10.61 and show you these are the forums that we're 00:22:10.64\00:22:14.25 pouring concrete in, the vertical columns and 00:22:14.72\00:22:20.53 then the lintels that connect the columns, 00:22:20.56\00:22:23.11 we have rebar in it. But, we only go one story 00:22:23.14\00:22:26.11 and we'll build a school like this. This school 00:22:26.73\00:22:29.01 building here is 20 feet wide, and plus 60 feet 00:22:29.04\00:22:37.54 long, it will have a 150 students in it and that 00:22:37.99\00:22:42.65 building will cost us about $10000 US to build. 00:22:44.05\00:22:46.47 And we will build those one visit, we will pour a 00:22:47.57\00:22:50.94 slab, we will pour the columns and put the 00:22:50.97\00:22:52.98 metal roof on, the windows and everything, we will do 00:22:53.01\00:22:55.41 that with one trip with a group of 15 to 20 people. 00:22:55.44\00:23:00.11 This business that I'm retiring from is what I 00:23:00.14\00:23:03.45 rely on in the work that we're doing in third 00:23:03.48\00:23:06.24 world countries. I come back with a project like 00:23:06.27\00:23:08.77 a water treatment plant or a generator plant for 00:23:08.80\00:23:12.67 a hospital, or school buildings, or clinic, 00:23:12.70\00:23:16.26 I come here and my son very graciously lets me 00:23:16.29\00:23:19.97 tap into the engineering pool that I need for the 00:23:20.00\00:23:23.12 design of that building which is to be build for 00:23:23.15\00:23:26.28 that facility out of much local materials as possible. 00:23:26.31\00:23:29.34 So, it's been a tremendous marriage in terms of our 00:23:29.37\00:23:32.29 work in Haiti and Dominican Republic, 00:23:32.32\00:23:34.48 Belize and I remember I had a engineer walk-in, 00:23:34.51\00:23:40.24 who has walked into the meeting late and 00:23:40.27\00:23:41.85 someone outside I think it was one of the ASI 00:23:41.88\00:23:45.64 officers said where were you from? 00:23:46.20\00:23:47.65 I'm from King Engineering. And well what you do? 00:23:47.68\00:23:50.26 Well you know we work in Haiti and do that and that. 00:23:50.29\00:23:53.09 Well that particular person, he was talking 00:23:53.12\00:23:56.22 to had a need for an engineering design at a 00:23:56.25\00:23:58.78 water treatment plant in Dominican Republic, 00:23:58.81\00:24:00.82 had an orphanage. So, that connected the 00:24:00.85\00:24:04.01 money from the donor to the engineering side 00:24:04.04\00:24:06.83 which they needed the design and the project 00:24:06.86\00:24:10.28 management to build it. I love going to the 00:24:10.31\00:24:12.33 different booths and seeing what people are 00:24:12.36\00:24:13.97 doing because you learn from that. You learn 00:24:14.00\00:24:17.20 some times it will raise your goals and say you 00:24:18.77\00:24:22.27 know I could be doing that, an example of that 00:24:22.30\00:24:25.83 would be in; when we started in Haiti we had 00:24:25.86\00:24:30.92 never, we didn't really think we could ever get 00:24:30.95\00:24:33.10 into the medical really an effective medical 00:24:33.13\00:24:36.99 program and I talked to a number of ASI 00:24:37.02\00:24:40.40 programs that we are involved with medical. 00:24:41.49\00:24:43.68 As you know in any of these programs when 00:24:44.93\00:24:47.93 you find a key person, that's in the country and 00:24:47.96\00:24:53.49 that's what we've done we worked with in 00:24:53.52\00:24:54.93 country talent because when you can't get to 00:24:54.96\00:24:57.87 the country the program still continues on if you 00:24:57.90\00:25:00.76 have those in country talent. Finding those 00:25:00.79\00:25:02.83 key people is; has been really, really critical 00:25:02.86\00:25:05.86 and so I came away from ASI realizing you 00:25:06.39\00:25:11.24 know we could expand into the medical program 00:25:11.27\00:25:13.94 in the countries. It's again a matter of 00:25:14.61\00:25:17.39 resourcing people, talented people and 00:25:17.42\00:25:20.55 materials and then having traveling groups 00:25:20.58\00:25:23.79 that come with you that have doctors or dentists 00:25:23.82\00:25:25.99 and I have heard that from many people they 00:25:26.02\00:25:27.70 go there not really know what to expect 00:25:27.73\00:25:29.61 and really coming away saying well I can do that. 00:25:30.16\00:25:32.47 Last year we said I had a interviewed a young 00:25:33.79\00:25:38.28 Haitian dentist. No chance of a job in the 00:25:38.31\00:25:41.16 country. Bright man, he had no tools, he had no 00:25:41.19\00:25:44.78 money to buy tools. So, again I said to our 00:25:44.81\00:25:47.61 co-director I said here is the, here is the talent we 00:25:47.64\00:25:49.91 need in the country he's been recommended to 00:25:49.94\00:25:52.46 us by one of our Haitian coordinators in the 00:25:52.49\00:25:56.11 country that we have a great deal of respect for. 00:25:56.14\00:25:58.02 And so we said you know lets put him to work. 00:25:59.08\00:26:00.85 And he is out there and people come from 15 or 00:26:00.88\00:26:03.36 20 villages walk to him, out of the clinic. 00:26:03.39\00:26:06.31 And he does extractions, amalgam fillings and 00:26:06.34\00:26:11.55 composite work and cleaning.
