Welcome to ASI Video Magazine, 00:00:28.08\00:00:30.99 I am Dan Houghton. I have been an ASI member 00:00:31.02\00:00:33.60 for a long time. And over the years 00:00:33.63\00:00:36.17 I have seen the organization change 00:00:36.20\00:00:38.50 and add new members, but one thing has 00:00:38.53\00:00:41.45 remained constant, our mission of sharing 00:00:41.48\00:00:43.98 Christ in the marketplace. 00:00:44.01\00:00:45.69 Today we are going to meet two ASI member 00:00:45.72\00:00:48.17 organizations, a clinic in Mississippi 00:00:48.20\00:00:50.58 and a school in Arkansas which are 00:00:50.61\00:00:53.28 devoted to fulfilling that mission. 00:00:53.31\00:00:55.93 Dr. Yoshinobu Namihira runs a 00:00:56.62\00:00:59.48 Better Living Clinic and endoscopy center 00:00:59.51\00:01:01.78 in Vicksburg, Mississippi. 00:01:01.81\00:01:03.36 Dr. Namihira uses his clinic as a center 00:01:03.39\00:01:06.70 for outreach to the community. 00:01:06.73\00:01:08.35 He likes to say that the life God gave him; 00:01:08.38\00:01:11.56 he wants to give to others. 00:01:11.59\00:01:13.29 And for each patient Dr. Namihira prays, 00:01:13.32\00:01:16.46 what can I do for him? What can I do for her? 00:01:16.49\00:01:20.02 Let's find out how those prayers 00:01:20.05\00:01:22.58 have been answered. 00:01:22.61\00:01:24.61 When I was a small boy in 1952 that's way back 00:01:39.03\00:01:42.98 before that saving vaccine was available. 00:01:43.01\00:01:45.95 I was struck by the polio, poliomyelitis. 00:01:45.98\00:01:50.82 My mother thought I was going to die because, 00:01:50.85\00:01:54.56 there is no doctors in the small island 00:01:54.59\00:01:57.05 in Okinawa, Japan way in 1950s before 00:01:57.08\00:02:01.26 the vaccine was even available 00:02:01.29\00:02:02.47 in the United States. So, my mother thought 00:02:02.50\00:02:05.90 that there is nothing she can do except 00:02:05.93\00:02:09.10 just rub my legs and then that's all she did. 00:02:09.13\00:02:13.41 And everybody thought this boy 00:02:13.44\00:02:15.77 is going to die, but miraculously I survived. 00:02:15.80\00:02:19.41 One day I was playing in the field with peers. 00:02:19.44\00:02:25.13 All of sudden rain came, and then the rest 00:02:25.16\00:02:29.90 of my peers just ran to the room, 00:02:29.93\00:02:35.13 to the, to the, to the class room from the, 00:02:35.16\00:02:38.13 from the field. And then I was running too, 00:02:38.16\00:02:41.99 and because I don't wanna get wet, 00:02:42.02\00:02:44.72 but because of my polio I couldn't get 00:02:44.75\00:02:47.92 to the room fast enough and then everybody 00:02:47.95\00:02:52.64 else was dry because they can ran fast 00:02:52.67\00:02:55.94 and then I was really depressed 00:02:55.97\00:02:58.35 and I was depressed. I looked up myself 00:02:58.38\00:03:00.80 and said, umm I thought I was the worst 00:03:00.83\00:03:03.76 in a case of the poliomyelitis, 00:03:03.79\00:03:06.00 because when you live in a small island 00:03:06.03\00:03:08.79 that was my concept. See, you are the worst 00:03:08.82\00:03:12.10 and you are the worst, but at the age of 13, 00:03:12.13\00:03:15.38 my mother took me from the small island 00:03:15.41\00:03:17.87 Yonaguni into the Ishigaki island, 00:03:17.90\00:03:20.31 and from Ishigaki island to the Mainland, 00:03:20.34\00:03:22.31 Okinawa. She took me to the hospital called 00:03:22.34\00:03:25.17 Hospital for Handicapped Children. 00:03:25.20\00:03:27.17 I have never seen children with a 00:03:27.20\00:03:30.50 cerebral palsy were not able to speak. 00:03:30.53\00:03:33.18 I have never seen this poliomyelitis bedridden 00:03:33.21\00:03:37.72 in wheel chair. And I was walking the way 00:03:37.75\00:03:40.66 they are even though it was not the perfect 00:03:40.69\00:03:42.74 shape, but I was at least moving. 00:03:42.77\00:03:45.34 That's the first time I saw and say, what? 00:03:46.91\00:03:50.75 And I was hush. My mother took me 00:03:50.78\00:03:54.16 to the hospital and through them for, 00:03:54.19\00:03:56.15 through them for the handicapped children. 00:03:56.18\00:03:58.42 And then I was admitted, the first night 00:03:58.45\00:04:01.77 I walked into a room and the first night 00:04:01.80\00:04:06.49 I did not sleep, I wept, I wept, because 00:04:06.52\00:04:10.96 while I was living in a small island I thought 00:04:10.99\00:04:14.88 I was worst, and I said, if I ever become 00:04:14.91\00:04:19.94 some, some, somebody, I want to do something 00:04:19.97\00:04:24.29 for somebody. The life I spent as a patient 00:04:24.32\00:04:34.57 it was a tremendous benefit for me 00:04:34.60\00:04:38.98 as a patient because I went to the surgeon 00:04:39.01\00:04:41.94 as a patient, I went through there 00:04:41.97\00:04:43.50 and so received the shot as a patient 00:04:43.53\00:04:45.83 as a small boy. And that experience 00:04:45.86\00:04:49.29 as a patient is the basis for me 00:04:49.32\00:04:53.26 to understand how the patients feel, 00:04:53.29\00:04:55.04 when they say, I get nausea there 00:04:55.07\00:04:57.14 and vomiting. And you know, what it means? 00:04:57.17\00:04:59.25 When they say, I have a pain, you know, 00:04:59.28\00:05:01.59 what it means because you are there. 00:05:01.62\00:05:03.90 I truly believe that I'm in the best of hands 00:05:03.93\00:05:07.47 you know, I have had a surgery, 00:05:07.50\00:05:10.53 he gave me surgery and it would really 00:05:10.56\00:05:12.27 impress me about that was you know, 00:05:12.30\00:05:15.18 I was little bit finding to go, you know, 00:05:15.21\00:05:18.53 to have surgery now, but just prior 00:05:18.56\00:05:21.51 to the time of my surgery, he held my hand 00:05:21.54\00:05:24.94 and he prayed over me. And I have never 00:05:24.97\00:05:27.45 ever had a physician to pray over me before 00:05:27.48\00:05:32.10 the surgery. And it just meant a lot to me 00:05:32.13\00:05:35.26 you know, it was just something special 00:05:35.29\00:05:37.82 you know, very spiritual. 00:05:37.85\00:05:39.80 That was also my experience went to him 00:05:39.83\00:05:42.14 when I first had colonoscopy, 00:05:42.17\00:05:44.43 they did the same thing and then 00:05:44.46\00:05:45.77 I would like to say first time doctor 00:05:45.80\00:05:47.72 ever pray and so I, I let you know 00:05:47.75\00:05:50.83 that he although he has skills that 00:05:50.86\00:05:53.28 he depended on a higher power. 00:05:53.31\00:05:55.16 Things change so much in eighteen 00:05:55.19\00:05:57.59 and a half years. And now, but I have to say 00:05:57.62\00:06:02.44 this, I have thoroughly enjoyed working for him 00:06:02.47\00:06:06.33 every minute. He is a fine Christian man. 00:06:06.36\00:06:10.82 I would not be here working today, 00:06:10.85\00:06:14.61 if it were someone else. If the doctor retires 00:06:14.64\00:06:18.71 probably just the same time too we'll 00:06:18.74\00:06:20.73 retire you know. Sometimes you don't 00:06:20.76\00:06:22.96 want to go to work, I mean some places, 00:06:22.99\00:06:25.23 but I just can't wait to get here other than this 00:06:25.26\00:06:28.36 is my second home, away from home. 00:06:28.39\00:06:30.11 So, and it makes you feel a whole lot better 00:06:30.14\00:06:33.30 when you are able to be in a place 00:06:33.33\00:06:35.38 that you love, oppose to a place that 00:06:35.41\00:06:37.91 you don't want to come to. So, I just 00:06:37.94\00:06:40.96 can't wait to get here every morning, 00:06:40.99\00:06:43.09 I wouldn't stay as long as I do, if I did not. 00:06:43.12\00:06:46.83 He tells us thank you. I know like the first 00:06:46.86\00:06:52.46 two days I was here three and a half years 00:06:52.49\00:06:54.68 ago. He come in and thanked me 00:06:54.71\00:06:57.09 then for the work I was doing 00:06:57.12\00:06:59.34 and that he was glad that I was on board 00:06:59.37\00:07:01.74 with the staff. And but he shows 00:07:01.77\00:07:05.19 his appreciation and he tells his appreciation. 00:07:05.22\00:07:08.17 Go, go, go, go, go, go back cook, 00:07:09.43\00:07:11.78 thank you very much Annie. You're welcome. 00:07:11.81\00:07:14.85 I have never seen him mad at employee 00:07:14.88\00:07:17.63 and I have never seen him raise his voice. 00:07:17.66\00:07:20.03 And when the first day I was here 00:07:20.06\00:07:25.75 when I started working for him that first day 00:07:25.78\00:07:28.16 I will never forget what he told me. 00:07:28.19\00:07:30.83 He said, Barbara I turned nobody away, 00:07:30.86\00:07:34.68 whether they have any money or not. 00:07:34.71\00:07:37.22 There are not many doctors that would tell 00:07:37.25\00:07:40.11 you drink more water you know, 00:07:40.14\00:07:42.77 you don't need the drugs you know, 00:07:42.80\00:07:44.96 you can do these natural things. 00:07:44.99\00:07:47.24 They like him, to comeback even though 00:07:47.27\00:07:49.68 they, they does what often say, 00:07:49.71\00:07:51.48 yes we will come back to the, 00:07:51.51\00:07:52.68 the procedure because of the prayer. 00:07:52.71\00:07:54.81 That's the only, they said that's the only 00:07:54.84\00:07:56.47 doctor that pray with them you know, 00:07:56.50\00:07:58.53 and they more feel relax you know, 00:07:58.56\00:08:01.07 and then they stay more confident you know, 00:08:01.10\00:08:03.61 after the prayer you know. 00:08:03.64\00:08:05.16 You got to have patience when you come here 00:08:05.19\00:08:07.04 and then I am here. But you know, 00:08:07.07\00:08:10.31 he is there for us and you know, 00:08:10.34\00:08:12.47 I, I personally feel I wish there are more 00:08:12.50\00:08:14.85 doctors like him because when we come here 00:08:14.88\00:08:17.70 and we know, we're getting best. 00:08:17.73\00:08:19.28 You know and hey, I have had a case 00:08:19.31\00:08:21.60 when I was kind of you know, 00:08:21.63\00:08:22.86 kind of depress you know, with stressed 00:08:22.89\00:08:26.63 or stressed out. And, and he would tell me 00:08:26.66\00:08:29.09 that you know, you have to really think about 00:08:29.12\00:08:31.59 what you are doing to yourself because he is, 00:08:31.62\00:08:33.19 you know, he is, he kind of compassion. 00:08:33.22\00:08:36.28 He has his wisdom that he shares with you 00:08:36.31\00:08:38.94 as his patients. And he talks about the 00:08:38.97\00:08:42.74 spiritual side as well as you know, 00:08:42.77\00:08:45.37 doing what God we want you to do. 00:08:45.40\00:08:47.40 Look at the things that are really truly 00:08:47.43\00:08:49.22 important to you, and those are the things 00:08:49.25\00:08:51.16 that you work at and you know, you work with. 00:08:51.19\00:08:52.99 So, to me that my main theme of life 00:08:53.02\00:08:56.06 is very simple. If you do it, you do it 00:08:56.09\00:09:00.97 with good heart. Not because I want you do 00:09:01.00\00:09:05.41 something for me, but because, 00:09:05.44\00:09:07.48 I' am called to do. I really pray for people 00:09:07.51\00:09:12.23 not only that I give these things, but. 00:09:12.26\00:09:15.78 I really start praying for people 00:09:15.81\00:09:18.18 who have been waiting. Main reason 00:09:18.21\00:09:21.30 I put the 3ABN is because that has 00:09:21.33\00:09:25.97 interesting message to get ready for that, 00:09:26.00\00:09:29.61 so some people are maybe offended you know, 00:09:29.64\00:09:35.16 someone told me, I stood but we decided 00:09:35.19\00:09:39.14 we're gonna stick to it. And if you diminish 00:09:39.17\00:09:43.99 then it be so hard you know 00:09:44.02\00:09:46.22 God will take care of it, so. 00:09:46.25\00:09:48.64 Well it basically what the really made 00:09:48.67\00:09:51.28 the big difference for me? And as a member 00:09:51.31\00:09:53.40 of ASI is the connection, the way 00:09:53.43\00:09:56.78 I share Christ in the medical practice, 00:09:56.81\00:09:59.45 may not be exactly same as when you have a 00:09:59.48\00:10:02.47 business or manufacturing, but the 00:10:02.50\00:10:04.89 principle is exactly the same. 00:10:04.92\00:10:07.05 We are not doing anything, we are just, 00:10:07.08\00:10:08.95 whether you make the bicycle, 00:10:08.98\00:10:10.46 or you do the surgery is still the same. 00:10:10.49\00:10:13.17 Concept is what do you have in your hand, 00:10:13.20\00:10:17.69 you just share with whom you will come 00:10:17.72\00:10:21.31 contact today. When I go the ASI Convention 00:10:21.34\00:10:24.89 and where I meet, I meet you know, 00:10:24.92\00:10:27.77 all kinds of people, but there is a 00:10:27.80\00:10:30.67 something common. And it's very easy to relate 00:10:30.70\00:10:34.51 that number one, number two, number one, 00:10:34.54\00:10:37.38 number two. ASI gave a avenue for me 00:10:37.41\00:10:40.74 to be connected. He is all about having better 00:10:40.77\00:10:43.80 health. And we appreciate that aspect 00:10:43.83\00:10:46.54 very well because as when out, 00:10:46.57\00:10:49.40 when we do our health meeting, 00:10:49.43\00:10:51.08 all our evangelistic meetings. 00:10:51.11\00:10:53.19 We always include health because we know 00:10:53.22\00:10:56.26 people who are sick and they are suffering, 00:10:56.29\00:10:59.40 and many times don't even know 00:10:59.43\00:11:00.93 why that they are suffering. 00:11:00.96\00:11:02.62 One of the things that impressed me so much 00:11:02.65\00:11:05.76 was, when it came time to pray for individuals 00:11:05.79\00:11:10.83 and you know, he has a walker 00:11:10.86\00:11:13.95 and he is not, cannot walk as well. 00:11:13.98\00:11:16.92 I saw him get down on his knees 00:11:16.95\00:11:19.59 and pray for a gentleman who had a 00:11:19.62\00:11:22.76 smoking problem. And I will tell you 00:11:22.79\00:11:24.99 that was just really a decisive moment. 00:11:25.02\00:11:28.90 It was a, it was a heart telling moment. 00:11:28.93\00:11:31.57 And so that is really impact me. 00:11:31.60\00:11:34.03 And so, to see individuals who really 00:11:35.32\00:11:39.81 care for others and, and willing to put 00:11:39.84\00:11:42.88 forth this message. If you notice 00:11:42.91\00:11:45.46 there is a amazing grace on the hallway. 00:11:45.49\00:11:48.95 So, those are the thing that sort of remind 00:11:48.98\00:11:53.03 the patients that I'm doing what I'm trying 00:11:53.06\00:11:55.43 to do because in addition to my skills 00:11:55.46\00:11:59.21 and training that I have, I want to give 00:11:59.24\00:12:01.55 something extra, if you want too. 00:12:01.58\00:12:03.04 Now, you have to be careful because 00:12:03.07\00:12:05.20 you cannot force what you believe, 00:12:05.23\00:12:08.02 but at least I can share, well at least 00:12:08.05\00:12:11.62 I can, I can review how I feel, 00:12:11.65\00:12:15.77 but yet you cannot force it. 00:12:15.80\00:12:18.64 When I see Dr. Namihira I see someone 00:12:18.67\00:12:20.71 being innovative. He uses the top of his 00:12:20.74\00:12:23.18 office to do presentations how to 00:12:23.21\00:12:26.15 assist his patients and not only understand 00:12:26.18\00:12:28.58 about how to live better, but also to know 00:12:28.61\00:12:31.74 about Jesus. I have never been in a 00:12:31.77\00:12:34.76 doctor's office that has been setup 00:12:34.79\00:12:36.72 in such a way that has been designed 00:12:36.75\00:12:39.13 for ministry. And so I think more-and-more 00:12:39.16\00:12:43.28 in these last days as God begins to pour out 00:12:43.31\00:12:45.68 its spirit and people began to take the call 00:12:45.71\00:12:47.63 of Jesus seriously. We're gonna seen 00:12:47.66\00:12:49.88 more and more people, and I'm convinced 00:12:49.91\00:12:52.00 Ellen White says, it's gonna be the laity 00:12:52.03\00:12:54.08 that are gonna finish the work that assist 00:12:54.11\00:12:56.75 in the second coming of Jesus. 00:12:56.78\00:12:58.35 And this is a good example of someone 00:12:58.38\00:13:00.58 who is not an ordained minister, 00:13:00.61\00:13:02.50 but as a lay person that takes 00:13:02.53\00:13:04.66 the calling of Jesus seriously. 00:13:04.69\00:13:06.52 ASI is filled with wonderful stories 00:13:07.64\00:13:10.33 of members in action just like 00:13:10.36\00:13:12.07 Dr. Namihira. In fact, one of the things 00:13:12.10\00:13:14.85 that drew Dr. Namihira to ASI was hearing 00:13:14.88\00:13:17.91 the testimonies of members at an 00:13:17.94\00:13:20.16 ASI Southern Union Chapter Meeting. 00:13:20.19\00:13:22.09 Dr. Namihira wrote to ASI that he was 00:13:22.12\00:13:24.96 impressed by our members, people. 00:13:24.99\00:13:27.97 He said had a common purpose in mind 00:13:28.00\00:13:30.19 to share Christ in the marketplace. 00:13:30.22\00:13:33.00 Held each year during the first weekend 00:13:33.03\00:13:35.21 in August, the ASI Convention is one of the 00:13:35.24\00:13:38.07 largest Adventists gatherings in 00:13:38.10\00:13:40.15 North America with thousands in attendance. 00:13:40.18\00:13:42.75 It's a time of camaraderie 00:13:43.46\00:13:44.90 and inspiration. We share exciting 00:13:44.93\00:13:47.04 testimonies and enjoy outstanding music 00:13:47.07\00:13:49.22 and speakers and encourage each other 00:13:49.25\00:13:51.41 to be bold in sharing Christ. 00:13:51.44\00:13:53.13 There are also full programs for children 00:13:53.16\00:13:56.29 and young adults and some families' even make 00:13:56.32\00:13:59.37 the ASI Convention, their summer vacation. 00:13:59.40\00:14:02.19 ASI is a great opportunity for anyone 00:14:02.22\00:14:04.75 to meet people. Giving opportunity 00:14:04.78\00:14:06.80 to network the individuals. 00:14:06.83\00:14:08.13 It's great opportunity for them 00:14:08.16\00:14:09.22 to learn from each other. Rubbing shoulders 00:14:09.25\00:14:10.97 and hanging out with people that are 00:14:11.00\00:14:13.34 committed to the Lord soon coming. 00:14:13.37\00:14:15.35 I have developed a wonderful network. 00:14:15.38\00:14:17.63 It's been absolutely invaluable the 00:14:17.66\00:14:19.62 contacts we have made through ASI. 00:14:19.65\00:14:22.26 ASI places great importance on 00:14:32.98\00:14:35.40 young people, and many of our members 00:14:35.43\00:14:37.43 are actively involved youth in ministry. 00:14:37.46\00:14:39.89 Ouachita Hills Academy and College, 00:14:39.92\00:14:42.72 are ASI member schools in Amity, Arkansas. 00:14:42.75\00:14:46.39 They are committed to providing their students 00:14:46.42\00:14:48.87 with the premier education along 00:14:48.90\00:14:51.20 with a practical work experience. 00:14:51.23\00:14:53.30 However, their supreme goal is to equip 00:14:53.33\00:14:56.29 students for a lifetime of soul winning. 00:14:56.32\00:14:59.62 Two, three, one. You are such a baby, 00:15:04.35\00:15:12.09 You are such a baby filled by the world 00:15:12.12\00:15:14.54 with love, you are such a baby like our tiny 00:15:14.57\00:15:23.30 child. When the world is yawning for the 00:15:23.33\00:15:29.92 brightest one, You are such a brightest star. 00:15:29.95\00:15:41.00 We get a lot of feedback, lot of 00:15:41.03\00:15:42.63 positive feedback about our students 00:15:42.66\00:15:44.07 from a variety of sources, employers, 00:15:44.10\00:15:45.81 and other schools. In fact we, 00:15:45.84\00:15:47.92 we hear often from other Adventist College 00:15:47.95\00:15:50.38 and Universities saying, we just love 00:15:50.41\00:15:51.81 the students that come from your school 00:15:51.84\00:15:53.88 because they do know, how to work 00:15:53.91\00:15:55.04 they are serious and focused. 00:15:55.07\00:15:56.37 They know where they are going. 00:15:56.40\00:15:57.94 Obviously they are still kids, but 00:15:57.97\00:16:00.99 we do, we do, we do believe that 00:16:01.02\00:16:03.30 as they work here they are not only 00:16:03.33\00:16:05.53 gaining skills you know, learning how to do 00:16:05.56\00:16:08.64 plumbing or wiring or baking or whatever 00:16:08.67\00:16:11.66 the skills sets are. They are also learning 00:16:11.69\00:16:15.26 those habits that no matter where 00:16:15.29\00:16:16.91 they go to work, no matter what 00:16:16.94\00:16:18.11 they are gonna do? They are going to be 00:16:18.14\00:16:19.11 performing. They are going to be 00:16:19.12\00:16:20.09 good workers. Our students come from all 00:16:20.10\00:16:22.47 different kinds of backgrounds. 00:16:22.50\00:16:24.06 Some people think, well they must all be 00:16:24.09\00:16:26.97 musical because we do focus a lot in on music. 00:16:27.00\00:16:29.77 And by the time they finish a year, 00:16:29.80\00:16:34.12 most of them are, and actively involved 00:16:34.15\00:16:36.58 in some kind of a musical program. 00:16:36.61\00:16:38.97 But actually our students are coming 00:16:39.00\00:16:41.43 from all different aspects. We do have a 00:16:41.46\00:16:43.64 lot of home-schooled children because 00:16:43.67\00:16:47.29 we find the home-schooled parents 00:16:47.32\00:16:48.59 are very concerned about the environment 00:16:48.62\00:16:50.95 their child comes into. And so, we do find 00:16:50.98\00:16:55.15 we have a lot of home school, but 00:16:55.18\00:16:56.54 we, we have students from usually about 00:16:56.57\00:16:59.69 20 to 24 different states in the academy. 00:16:59.72\00:17:02.76 And some of them are, are very academically 00:17:02.79\00:17:07.33 gifted and some of them are not. 00:17:07.36\00:17:09.75 I can honestly say it was probably one of the 00:17:10.90\00:17:14.18 defining moments of my life. 00:17:14.21\00:17:15.72 It's hard to describe, but I had never been 00:17:15.75\00:17:19.70 in the environment where they were conservative, 00:17:19.73\00:17:21.73 Christian dedicated young people 00:17:21.76\00:17:25.63 I just never had those kinds of friends 00:17:25.66\00:17:27.40 when I was young. And so, coming to the school 00:17:27.43\00:17:29.58 like this where I made very good friends 00:17:29.61\00:17:31.78 that were Christians, they were dedicated 00:17:31.81\00:17:33.84 Adventist. It was just an 00:17:33.87\00:17:34.99 amazing experience for me. 00:17:35.02\00:17:36.24 Ha, five thousand, six thousand, 00:17:37.46\00:17:39.66 seven thousand, eight thousand, 00:17:39.69\00:17:41.40 nine thousand, ten thousand. 00:17:41.43\00:17:43.04 I can go to anywhere just like this. 00:17:43.07\00:17:44.72 I can go to anywhere just like this. 00:17:44.75\00:17:47.94 Come on, all the way to Texas just like this. 00:17:47.97\00:17:50.98 Come on, all the way to Texas just like this. 00:17:51.01\00:17:54.31 Stop, front, bouncing ball. 00:17:54.34\00:17:59.75 Ouachita Hills Academy strives to anchor 00:18:01.95\00:18:06.07 students in the word of God. 00:18:06.10\00:18:07.24 That's sort of our number one focus. 00:18:07.27\00:18:09.94 We want them to get an education 00:18:09.97\00:18:11.92 that's practical that will put them for life 00:18:11.95\00:18:14.52 that will help them to the successful 00:18:14.55\00:18:16.54 in this world. But even more important 00:18:16.57\00:18:19.12 we want them to be successful for eternity. 00:18:19.15\00:18:20.82 We want them to gain a personal relationship 00:18:20.85\00:18:23.85 with Jesus Christ. So, our program focus 00:18:23.88\00:18:27.08 is on both in the academy and the college, 00:18:27.11\00:18:29.35 focus is on not just the classroom learning, 00:18:29.38\00:18:33.31 but actual practical Christianity living 00:18:33.34\00:18:36.22 for Christ, sharing Christ and we have a 00:18:36.25\00:18:38.13 lot of emphasis on evangelism, and missions 00:18:38.16\00:18:40.93 and soul winning. Because we believe 00:18:40.96\00:18:43.66 that every young person should be a minister. 00:18:43.69\00:18:46.29 Just like ASI has the motto of sharing Christ 00:18:46.32\00:18:49.17 in the marketplace. We realize the work 00:18:49.20\00:18:51.06 is not gonna be finished by just pastors 00:18:51.09\00:18:53.13 or teachers or evangelists. 00:18:53.16\00:18:54.42 We want our young people whether they become 00:18:54.45\00:18:57.40 plumbers or pediatricians. 00:18:57.43\00:18:58.93 We want them to be active in each, 00:18:58.96\00:19:01.81 in their faith and, and in their church and, 00:19:01.84\00:19:03.46 and sharing Christ with those they meet. 00:19:03.49\00:19:05.73 I get letters on a regular basis 00:19:05.76\00:19:07.98 from students who, who tell me 00:19:08.01\00:19:12.13 what a difference been in at academy 00:19:12.16\00:19:14.68 or the college has made in their life. 00:19:14.71\00:19:16.81 And some of them are, are solid, solid 00:19:16.84\00:19:20.42 students that always were, or kind of a the 00:19:20.45\00:19:24.65 cream of the crop type students you think of, 00:19:24.68\00:19:26.86 who you thought maybe you didn't impacted all. 00:19:26.89\00:19:31.24 I remember a letter I got from a student 00:19:31.27\00:19:33.74 who told me, how she would never had her 00:19:33.77\00:19:35.42 devotions before she came here 00:19:35.45\00:19:37.01 and we taught her how to have devotions. 00:19:37.04\00:19:38.84 And what a major difference that made 00:19:38.87\00:19:40.99 in her life. And she was a student that coming 00:19:41.02\00:19:44.00 from the home, she came from looking 00:19:44.03\00:19:46.03 at her behavior and everything 00:19:46.06\00:19:47.28 you would think it had just saw her walk, walk 00:19:47.31\00:19:49.50 with the Lord all along, but she didn't and, 00:19:49.53\00:19:52.36 and it was just really encouraging letter. 00:19:52.39\00:19:54.23 We believe it's very important that the 00:19:54.26\00:19:56.48 students have not just class room learning, 00:19:56.51\00:19:58.84 but work training as well. You know, 00:19:58.87\00:20:01.03 as much as we can we want to follow the model 00:20:01.06\00:20:05.58 for education that the Adventist Church 00:20:05.61\00:20:07.45 have been given specifically in the 00:20:07.48\00:20:09.18 writings of Ellen White. And one of the things 00:20:09.21\00:20:11.26 she says is that, "An education derived 00:20:11.29\00:20:13.31 chiefly from books leads the shallow thought 00:20:13.34\00:20:15.51 and superficial thinking." 00:20:15.54\00:20:16.68 And only now, the scientists 00:20:16.71\00:20:19.78 and the educational world is starting 00:20:19.81\00:20:21.99 to realize that actually when young people 00:20:22.02\00:20:24.33 learn to work with their hands it does increase 00:20:24.36\00:20:27.43 their cognitive problem solving skills. 00:20:27.46\00:20:30.24 And it helps them to be able to take a project 00:20:30.27\00:20:32.21 from beginning to completion to be able to 00:20:32.24\00:20:34.42 map the path you know, from start to end. 00:20:34.45\00:20:36.64 And so, we believe that this is an important 00:20:36.67\00:20:39.55 part of their work experience. 00:20:39.58\00:20:41.18 They are not paid directly for the work 00:20:41.21\00:20:44.50 that they do during the vocational time, 00:20:44.53\00:20:47.23 the most vocational training time, 00:20:47.26\00:20:48.80 but this does allow us to keep our tuition cost 00:20:48.83\00:20:51.05 very low. And we're little less than half 00:20:51.08\00:20:54.05 actually of the cost of 00:20:54.08\00:20:56.04 other Adventist institutions. 00:20:56.07\00:20:58.24 Oh, very much a campof under construction 00:21:17.70\00:21:21.69 and development right now our big projects 00:21:21.72\00:21:24.97 are completing this classroom, 00:21:25.00\00:21:26.96 administration building and the new academy 00:21:26.99\00:21:29.62 boys dorm. Our Board of Directors 00:21:29.65\00:21:32.36 just has met and approved the purchase 00:21:32.39\00:21:35.57 of adjoining 40 acres that we will use to 00:21:35.60\00:21:39.65 build up a college housing and more 00:21:39.68\00:21:43.48 college buildings. Right now we do a lot of 00:21:43.51\00:21:45.36 sharing and we will continue to do some 00:21:45.39\00:21:47.10 sharing our facilities because it's just 00:21:47.13\00:21:48.92 advantages to both programs. 00:21:48.95\00:21:51.14 But we have 381 acres, and we're looking 00:21:51.17\00:21:57.60 to develop it into programs for both 00:21:57.63\00:22:03.15 the college and the academy. 00:22:03.18\00:22:04.16 And we also have an active missions program. 00:22:04.19\00:22:06.52 Since 1998, we began taking our students 00:22:06.55\00:22:09.79 overseas and doing evangelism programs 00:22:09.82\00:22:12.37 with them. You know, many times we might be 00:22:12.40\00:22:14.15 building a church, or orphanage 00:22:14.18\00:22:15.32 or something else along the same time. 00:22:15.35\00:22:17.74 We also have each year a special trip 00:22:17.77\00:22:21.82 that's just for our academy seniors. 00:22:21.85\00:22:23.53 And this trip they are more involved 00:22:23.56\00:22:25.89 in planning. The first semester of the senior 00:22:25.92\00:22:28.72 year they take a Bible doctrines class, 00:22:28.75\00:22:30.54 which is actually equipping them 00:22:30.57\00:22:32.33 to be more effective in speaking 00:22:32.36\00:22:35.58 and in giving Bible studies and helping 00:22:35.61\00:22:38.13 people understand from the Bible especially 00:22:38.16\00:22:41.53 our distinctive doctrines. 00:22:41.56\00:22:43.50 And this last year for example, 00:22:43.53\00:22:45.86 the senior class helped four evangelistic 00:22:45.89\00:22:48.88 campaigns in Bulgaria. They are focusing 00:22:48.91\00:22:51.33 largely on a gypsy population in Varna, 00:22:51.36\00:22:55.62 which is a part of the country which, 00:22:55.65\00:22:58.94 in which the gypsies specifically 00:22:58.97\00:23:01.04 haven't have a lot of evangelism 00:23:01.07\00:23:04.00 from the Adventist Church. And so, 00:23:04.03\00:23:06.06 we spent, we spent four weeks in the 00:23:06.09\00:23:09.32 Varna area with our senior class. 00:23:09.35\00:23:10.93 And each, each of those four sites had 00:23:10.96\00:23:13.93 four seniors that were speaking nightly. 00:23:13.96\00:23:17.81 They were doing health talks. 00:23:17.84\00:23:19.29 They were doing a children's program 00:23:19.32\00:23:21.34 and they were you know, running setting up 00:23:21.37\00:23:25.55 their own equipment, running their own 00:23:25.58\00:23:26.72 equipment and then they were also doing 00:23:26.75\00:23:28.63 some visitations during the day. 00:23:28.66\00:23:30.45 And this last year we were actually 00:23:30.48\00:23:32.01 able to take a couple of the college students 00:23:32.04\00:23:33.60 with us, I went to these missions trips 00:23:33.63\00:23:35.36 to Bulgaria. And so we used the opportunity 00:23:35.39\00:23:38.20 to give them experience in shooting 00:23:38.23\00:23:42.04 and producing a video and so we actually 00:23:42.07\00:23:44.71 produced a report video on 00:23:44.74\00:23:45.99 our Bulgaria Mission trip. 00:23:46.02\00:23:47.45 And so this gave them an opportunity 00:23:47.48\00:23:50.05 for some who haven't yet had the chance 00:23:50.08\00:23:52.54 to speak for an evangelistic series 00:23:52.57\00:23:54.25 here in United States. They gave them 00:23:54.28\00:23:55.93 opportunity to preach their series; 00:23:55.96\00:23:58.19 some of them for the first time. 00:23:58.22\00:23:59.25 And hopefully the experience they gain 00:23:59.28\00:24:02.11 there will be something that will help them. 00:24:02.14\00:24:04.78 Some of them will, will now comeback 00:24:04.81\00:24:07.77 to the states and do more 00:24:07.80\00:24:09.85 active evangelism here. 00:24:09.88\00:24:11.35 This school exists in part for closing 00:24:11.38\00:24:15.33 the back door of the church. 00:24:15.36\00:24:16.75 We have seen so many young people, 00:24:16.78\00:24:18.92 even people that are not young 00:24:18.95\00:24:20.28 and or my age, who went well all the way 00:24:20.31\00:24:22.55 through academy and college 00:24:22.58\00:24:24.63 and maybe great school and church. 00:24:24.66\00:24:26.24 And yet somehow they never got the vision. 00:24:26.27\00:24:29.72 They never came to love the Lord 00:24:29.75\00:24:31.81 or maybe they did, but they made choices 00:24:31.84\00:24:35.17 and then let them away. And we believe 00:24:35.20\00:24:37.16 there is just far too many young people 00:24:37.19\00:24:38.85 who are in that category, and if we can 00:24:38.88\00:24:41.12 give them while they are receiving 00:24:41.15\00:24:42.80 their education. A greater understanding 00:24:42.83\00:24:46.60 of why we as a church exist. 00:24:46.63\00:24:49.02 Why the Lord is counting for us is so beautiful. 00:24:49.05\00:24:52.54 And get them involved in soul winning exercises 00:24:52.57\00:24:58.48 or activities. We believe we will succeed 00:24:58.51\00:25:02.06 in helping to close that door. 00:25:02.09\00:25:04.65 From the beginning I think we can say 00:25:04.68\00:25:07.20 that ASI did two things for Ouachita Hills. 00:25:07.23\00:25:12.40 Number one, ASI has provided encouragement 00:25:12.43\00:25:17.24 and support for this school as a ministry. 00:25:17.27\00:25:22.54 A number of times we have been recipients 00:25:22.57\00:25:24.93 of project offerings, but more than that 00:25:24.96\00:25:26.95 we have been, we have received encouragement 00:25:26.98\00:25:29.78 in what we're doing. And ASI has a strong 00:25:29.81\00:25:32.86 history in supporting ministries. 00:25:32.89\00:25:34.66 And so ASI leaders and ASI members have given 00:25:34.69\00:25:39.20 a lot of, a lot of encouragement, 00:25:39.23\00:25:40.95 a lot of prayers, a lot of guidance, 00:25:40.98\00:25:43.33 a lot of good ideas that have helped 00:25:43.36\00:25:45.17 Ouachita Hills from its very beginning. 00:25:45.20\00:25:48.12 But the second impact that ASI has had 00:25:48.15\00:25:52.02 on Ouachita Hills, I would, I would say 00:25:52.05\00:25:54.40 is on its students. In our philosophy of 00:25:54.43\00:25:59.79 wanting to have students who are workers 00:25:59.82\00:26:03.74 for God soul winners, no matter what 00:26:03.77\00:26:05.31 their career profession. We face a challenge 00:26:05.34\00:26:08.77 because you can say that, but it's much more 00:26:08.80\00:26:12.45 powerful, if you can see that. 00:26:12.48\00:26:14.44 And we love to take our students to ASI 00:26:14.47\00:26:17.71 because there they see real men and women, 00:26:17.74\00:26:21.17 who are living what we're trying to train 00:26:21.20\00:26:24.55 them for. There they, they maybe 00:26:24.58\00:26:26.70 professionals, they maybe business people, 00:26:26.73\00:26:28.47 they maybe you know, entrepreneurs, 00:26:28.50\00:26:30.26 but their passion is still to save souls. 00:26:30.29\00:26:35.64 They are, they are calling that 00:26:35.67\00:26:36.84 they feel God has placed on their heart 00:26:36.87\00:26:38.67 is to be marketplace ministries 00:26:38.70\00:26:40.49 as lay people. And we treasure, 00:26:40.52\00:26:44.27 the impact and influence that ASI members 00:26:44.30\00:26:47.62 have on our young people, because 00:26:47.65\00:26:49.93 as far as I can tell there is no better place 00:26:49.96\00:26:54.23 where they can safely to mentor 00:26:54.26\00:26:56.09 than in an ASI Convention or with 00:26:56.12\00:26:58.94 ASI members and ASI ministers. 00:26:58.97\00:27:01.23 It's amazing to imagine the plans God 00:27:01.26\00:27:04.54 has in store for the students at 00:27:04.57\00:27:06.61 Ouachita Hills Academy and College. 00:27:06.64\00:27:08.38 For information about the schools visit 00:27:08.41\00:27:11.38 ouachitahillsacademy.org and ohc.org. 00:27:11.41\00:27:16.42 To learn more about ASI including 00:27:17.32\00:27:19.24 how to become a member, call 301-680-6450 00:27:19.27\00:27:25.14 or visit www.asiministries.org. 00:27:25.17\00:27:29.73 I am Dan Houghton; you have been watching 00:27:29.76\00:27:32.72 ASI Video Magazine.
