ASI is a ministry that's networking all these 00:00:01.98\00:00:02.95 different ministries together with the church. 00:00:02.96\00:00:04.98 Being involved with ASI meeting other people. 00:00:05.01\00:00:07.81 ASI convention is an excellent opportunity just 00:00:07.84\00:00:10.32 a great opportunity. In ASI there is a 00:00:10.35\00:00:13.22 particular fellowship, ASI is really the stamp, 00:00:13.40\00:00:15.54 it's the glue that holds all the ministries together. 00:00:15.57\00:00:18.11 Welcome to ASI Video Magazine. 00:00:27.83\00:00:29.99 I am Dan Houghton. ASI members are committed 00:00:30.02\00:00:33.38 to sharing Christ in the market place and are very 00:00:33.41\00:00:37.05 involved in a wide variety of outreach efforts. 00:00:37.08\00:00:39.85 Some are active in large evangelistic meetings, 00:00:40.69\00:00:43.10 others in personal outreach, and some 00:00:43.64\00:00:45.99 witness through health and lifestyle programs, 00:00:46.02\00:00:48.04 while others witness the technology and media. 00:00:48.07\00:00:51.15 But, the ultimate goal is bringing people to Jesus. 00:00:51.93\00:00:55.21 Wildwood Lifestyle Center in Wildwood, 00:00:56.32\00:00:58.44 Georgia is a long time ASI member organization, 00:00:58.47\00:01:01.79 in fact it was one of the founding ASI organizations. 00:01:01.82\00:01:05.28 Most guests arrive at Wildwood with serious 00:01:06.02\00:01:08.71 health issues and they're looking to improve their 00:01:08.74\00:01:11.26 lives, how they eat, exercise and their daily routines. 00:01:11.29\00:01:15.02 And there are many stories of lives changed at 00:01:15.73\00:01:17.94 Wildwood are nothing short 00:01:17.97\00:01:19.80 of amazing. Let's find out more. 00:01:20.53\00:01:22.42 There is a special revulsive treatment, 00:01:37.83\00:01:40.80 where you put the heart across the chest, you have 00:01:40.83\00:01:44.97 a steam tank in which you get that as really hot and 00:01:45.00\00:01:49.59 then you put towels around it to make it just 00:01:49.62\00:01:52.84 as hot as you can stand. And I'm gonna catch it 00:01:52.87\00:01:55.52 right here, so it will be in shape. Give him enough 00:01:55.55\00:02:03.06 nose room to breathe. After three minutes of 00:02:03.73\00:02:06.33 that, then a ice whole pack is put across the 00:02:06.36\00:02:11.12 chest and they do that three times and it helps 00:02:11.15\00:02:15.39 the lungs to flush the congestion out. 00:02:15.42\00:02:19.77 Put it right up, how is it Joshua, now you don't 00:02:19.80\00:02:23.53 want that on there more than three minutes 00:02:23.56\00:02:25.31 because it's got to be quick stimulating 00:02:25.34\00:02:27.22 type of treatment. We have had people like 00:02:27.25\00:02:29.20 who could hardly walk a block, you know, down at 00:02:29.23\00:02:33.01 the end of the hall and they will leave here 00:02:33.04\00:02:35.58 walking several miles, so its I guess that testimony 00:02:35.61\00:02:40.95 as it goes out draws lot of people to come. 00:02:40.98\00:02:43.21 We have three entities, we have a small hospital, 00:02:52.85\00:02:56.51 we have a clinic, and then we have the lifestyle center. 00:02:57.04\00:03:00.12 And the unique thing about Wildwood is that 00:03:00.15\00:03:02.45 it's one of the few I now think only one in America 00:03:03.14\00:03:08.81 that has a lifestyle center connected with the hospital. 00:03:09.40\00:03:12.92 Wildwood Lifestyle Center is a program, 00:03:13.72\00:03:15.64 where people come into change their lifestyle. 00:03:15.67\00:03:17.89 They want to learn to eat healthy, they want to 00:03:18.56\00:03:21.17 learn to get on a regular routine, their diet is 00:03:21.20\00:03:26.19 important, we teach a vegan diet. 00:03:26.22\00:03:28.51 They do a lot of outdoor work as well, exercise in 00:03:29.14\00:03:32.32 the outdoor, walking. We have many trails around. 00:03:32.35\00:03:36.29 We do have a few, who'll call in that are meat eaters 00:03:36.32\00:03:38.82 and at first it seems to shock them, 00:03:39.34\00:03:41.05 but they come around. We also have a small 00:03:41.08\00:03:45.82 gym for individuals that need you know may be a 00:03:45.89\00:03:49.50 little bit more, who can't walk as much. 00:03:49.53\00:03:51.63 And they have a complete physical examination 00:03:52.07\00:03:55.68 when they come here. We have medical doctors 00:03:55.71\00:03:57.66 then we practice hydrotherapy and 00:03:58.23\00:03:59.75 massage therapy, which is included in the program. 00:03:59.78\00:04:02.61 They do go to cooking demonstrations. 00:04:03.46\00:04:05.34 So, they can learn how to cook and I am now giving 00:04:05.91\00:04:08.30 them a book that it should help them when they go 00:04:08.33\00:04:10.72 home to continue with the vegan diet, which is 00:04:10.75\00:04:13.54 difficult when you come from a meat eating situation. 00:04:13.57\00:04:16.23 It's rather difficult to become a vegan, you know. 00:04:16.26\00:04:19.56 And when they come here they learn that the food 00:04:19.59\00:04:21.75 can be good. 'Cause out, you know some places 00:04:21.78\00:04:24.57 where you go and eat some people's cooking, 00:04:24.60\00:04:26.60 it's not real great especially vegan it's hard 00:04:26.63\00:04:29.44 to make it tasty, but it can be done. 00:04:29.47\00:04:31.57 We get people from everywhere and the 00:04:34.13\00:04:37.63 reason that they come usually is that some 00:04:37.66\00:04:40.60 friend of theirs or some teen from here went to 00:04:41.01\00:04:45.30 their church and talked about what Wildwood 00:04:45.33\00:04:48.99 does and so they were inspired to think when 00:04:50.13\00:04:52.01 they were having health problems that Wildwood 00:04:52.04\00:04:55.69 is the place to go to receive relief. 00:04:55.72\00:04:58.64 We have a whole medical staff and 00:04:59.06\00:05:03.36 we have our own lab. What we are doing the 00:05:03.83\00:05:06.46 most of I guess is those diseases, where a change 00:05:06.49\00:05:11.71 in lifestyle can improve or even eliminate the 00:05:11.74\00:05:16.01 disease, one of the best is diabetes. 00:05:16.04\00:05:19.68 People can come here and within 17 days often 00:05:20.86\00:05:24.69 leave with no insulin needed. 00:05:24.72\00:05:27.27 And we try of course and get our hospital patients 00:05:27.75\00:05:31.05 up as much as possible and get out into the 00:05:31.08\00:05:33.04 sunlight and moving about I mean getting 00:05:33.07\00:05:37.57 active again. Well their program has to 00:05:37.60\00:05:40.19 be monitored carefully by our physicians and we 00:05:40.22\00:05:44.19 don't take people off from insulin or any drug that 00:05:44.22\00:05:48.55 they're on just overnight, we don't do 00:05:48.58\00:05:51.06 that except tobacco. And this whole lifestyle is 00:05:51.09\00:05:55.27 then shared with them and there are times when 00:05:55.30\00:05:59.07 a patient think is well enough that they come 00:05:59.10\00:06:00.91 and they can join the lecture, 00:06:00.94\00:06:02.29 join the cooking class. So, that they can go home 00:06:02.32\00:06:06.31 you know with the education and the 00:06:06.93\00:06:08.75 foundation on which to build again. 00:06:08.78\00:06:10.63 Out in the world you get big salaries and in a self 00:06:10.98\00:06:15.07 supporting ministry we work on a volunteer 00:06:15.10\00:06:18.99 basis, where people are given a basic living 00:06:19.02\00:06:23.78 allowance and accommodation. So, it's not the big bucks 00:06:23.81\00:06:28.02 of the world as it were and it's definitely a 00:06:28.05\00:06:31.21 calling for people to come here, professional people 00:06:31.24\00:06:34.79 too as nurses and physicians to work in our hospital. 00:06:34.82\00:06:38.84 And we had a definite shortage and we had to go 00:06:39.56\00:06:44.62 inactive, the state allows a period of 12 months, 00:06:44.65\00:06:48.43 where the hospital can go inactive. 00:06:48.96\00:06:51.05 The Lord blessed and we were able to get nurses 00:06:51.92\00:06:55.09 and we were also able to do a lot of 00:06:55.12\00:06:58.39 revamping in our hospital. We were able to do a 00:06:58.42\00:07:03.96 hydrotherapy area and painting, and we were 00:07:03.99\00:07:09.47 able to get new beds, and the Lord blessed and we 00:07:09.50\00:07:13.29 were able to open and we passed our inspection, 00:07:13.32\00:07:15.68 it was a rigorous inspection. 00:07:16.67\00:07:18.32 We had six inspectors here for three days and 00:07:18.35\00:07:22.88 the Lord blessed and we were able to 00:07:22.91\00:07:24.98 open without any deficiencies. 00:07:25.01\00:07:26.70 In the world today, teachers graduate from 00:07:29.02\00:07:32.17 school, but they don't always understand. 00:07:32.20\00:07:34.23 While the Lifestyle Center was officially 00:07:34.26\00:07:36.57 organized in 1942 and they've always had an 00:07:36.60\00:07:39.44 educational program, we run primarily a six month 00:07:39.47\00:07:42.81 training course to train lay members of the 00:07:42.84\00:07:45.91 church to use the right arm of the Gospel. 00:07:45.94\00:07:48.70 We teach them in both, we train them as health 00:07:49.47\00:07:51.72 educators and we also train them how to share 00:07:51.75\00:07:54.44 Jesus and we give Bible classes. 00:07:54.47\00:07:56.27 So, it's a combination of Bible and health classes 00:07:56.30\00:07:58.41 and how to use the health message as the right arm 00:07:58.44\00:08:00.92 of the Gospel and communities. 00:08:01.58\00:08:02.82 We teach them how to do health expositions, 00:08:02.85\00:08:04.59 cooking classes, seminars. We teach them how to do 00:08:05.41\00:08:08.46 door to door work, so when they're finished, 00:08:08.49\00:08:10.48 they are ready to work in their communities, they're 00:08:11.00\00:08:12.83 ready to work in their churches, they're ready to 00:08:12.86\00:08:16.06 go overseas and help share knowledge with 00:08:16.09\00:08:18.06 people that they can save them from so much 00:08:18.09\00:08:20.14 sickness and disease. We recently had a student 00:08:20.69\00:08:23.57 that came and took our course and during, during 00:08:23.60\00:08:27.47 the one year that she was here because she worked 00:08:27.50\00:08:29.06 for six months first to pay off her tuition and she 00:08:29.09\00:08:31.19 took the six month course, and she in that 00:08:31.22\00:08:34.18 year lost 75 pounds and it was just a real miracle to 00:08:34.21\00:08:39.96 see her just totally change her lifestyle around and 00:08:39.99\00:08:42.49 she really had a testimony then. 00:08:42.52\00:08:43.89 We have many students that have graduated from 00:08:43.92\00:08:46.72 here that go out into all different countries. 00:08:46.75\00:08:50.88 Well, I went on a mission trip with her and a team 00:08:50.91\00:08:53.53 of students to Brazil, while we help establish a 00:08:53.56\00:08:56.73 Lifestyle Center outside Rio de Janeiro and she 00:08:56.76\00:08:59.38 had such a good experience and she was 00:08:59.41\00:09:01.54 eager to share that, she wanted to be involved in 00:09:01.57\00:09:03.81 this type of work and so I asked her if she would 00:09:03.84\00:09:05.89 be willing to stay and help with the Lifestyle 00:09:05.92\00:09:08.20 Center in Brazil and she did, and she's worked 00:09:08.23\00:09:09.90 there now for two years and she is just having a 00:09:09.93\00:09:13.05 great experience and she is just a committed 00:09:13.08\00:09:15.16 worker for the Lord. You know, when the students 00:09:15.19\00:09:17.42 are finished with their training and they have 00:09:17.45\00:09:20.26 opportunities to work in Lifestyle Centers here in 00:09:20.29\00:09:23.46 the United States or overseas, well more than 00:09:23.49\00:09:26.91 that we're working on a global initiative to foster 00:09:26.94\00:09:32.68 more training programs and more lifestyle centers 00:09:32.71\00:09:36.03 like we have at Wildwood. We're working in 00:09:36.06\00:09:38.03 harmony with different ministry leaders from ASI. 00:09:38.06\00:09:41.61 And then of course ASI is a real blessing to 00:09:41.64\00:09:44.36 Wildwood because when we get to go once a year 00:09:44.39\00:09:48.85 and we hear the stories of what other people are 00:09:48.88\00:09:51.06 doing and our workers hear that, we show it over 00:09:51.09\00:09:55.32 the satellites, so all of our workers can see it. 00:09:55.35\00:09:59.19 But, it just, it creates a moral that makes people 00:10:00.04\00:10:05.22 even more eager to do something for the Lord. 00:10:05.25\00:10:07.30 Our greatest area of expansion is in reaching 00:10:08.09\00:10:14.00 out to other places other than Wildwood because 00:10:14.03\00:10:18.61 not everybody can come here. 00:10:18.64\00:10:20.14 I have been Director of the school at Wildwood 00:10:20.58\00:10:22.32 for six years and I've seen, you know, hundreds 00:10:22.35\00:10:25.45 of applications. I've got stacks of applications 00:10:25.48\00:10:28.11 from around the world and I realize, you know, 00:10:28.14\00:10:30.03 these people need training, they want 00:10:30.06\00:10:31.66 training, but we can't send them all here, it's not 00:10:31.69\00:10:33.61 practical to fly to the United States and it's, 00:10:33.64\00:10:36.86 you know, very impossible to do so for 00:10:37.22\00:10:38.70 most and to get in. So, our goal is to establish 00:10:38.73\00:10:41.56 short training courses for lay members in every 00:10:41.59\00:10:44.33 union of the world field. So, we think every church 00:10:44.36\00:10:46.47 member should have an opportunity 00:10:46.50\00:10:47.81 to receive the training. This past year we've 00:10:48.15\00:10:51.25 started eighteen schools and our graduates from 00:10:51.28\00:10:54.53 the six month course go to these different 00:10:54.56\00:10:56.49 countries to help share what they've learned. 00:10:56.52\00:10:58.31 We also have a natural food store that does very 00:10:59.12\00:11:00.95 well, it's right here on our campus. Our campus is 00:11:00.98\00:11:03.19 only ten minutes from Chattanooga, so it's pretty 00:11:03.22\00:11:05.64 easy for people to get to. And you know it's one of 00:11:05.67\00:11:08.50 the industries that really sustains our campus more 00:11:08.53\00:11:10.49 than that it brings in a class of people that we 00:11:10.52\00:11:14.31 would not otherwise be able to reach. 00:11:14.34\00:11:16.22 So, selling the health foods and it helps you to 00:11:16.25\00:11:20.53 start discussions with people about health and 00:11:20.56\00:11:22.99 then they ask, you know, what is this place and 00:11:23.02\00:11:25.34 what are you guys doing here, and it just opens up 00:11:25.37\00:11:27.39 so many ways to share about your faith. 00:11:27.42\00:11:29.61 Natural remedies work and you don't get that bad 00:11:30.12\00:11:33.05 side affects off of them that you do also, let's say 00:11:33.08\00:11:35.50 pharmaceutical type medicines. 00:11:35.53\00:11:37.18 One of the big ones is Goldenseal because 00:11:37.21\00:11:39.38 Goldenseal has a lot of really 00:11:39.41\00:11:40.61 great properties to it. It's antifungal, 00:11:41.72\00:11:43.86 antibacterial, antiviral stuff, it's used to treat a 00:11:43.89\00:11:47.02 lot of different things, another one we use is 00:11:47.05\00:11:50.25 charcoal. Charcoal's got to be one of the best 00:11:50.28\00:11:51.98 natural remedies that you can possibly have. 00:11:52.01\00:11:53.98 Now we also have an organic farm and so it 00:11:54.32\00:11:57.05 helps us to reach that class as well. 00:11:57.08\00:11:58.82 We sell farm produce and we deliver, we deliver our 00:11:59.30\00:12:02.65 produce to different restaurants and stores in 00:12:02.68\00:12:06.34 town and that gives us more avenues to share. 00:12:06.37\00:12:08.39 There are 40,000 workers on any given day of the 00:12:08.42\00:12:12.20 week that spill out into the streets looking for 00:12:12.23\00:12:15.34 food and so we're the only vegetarian restaurant 00:12:16.55\00:12:19.56 in Chattanooga. People do take Bible 00:12:19.59\00:12:22.52 studies and sometimes people will be baptized 00:12:22.55\00:12:25.91 and come into a church to our program, which is 00:12:25.94\00:12:29.76 a real blessing, you know, that's what we're here for, 00:12:30.17\00:12:32.72 you know, the physical healing is 00:12:33.28\00:12:35.30 as important as spiritual. We have a certain number 00:12:35.33\00:12:38.57 of patients and Lifestyle guests that will start 00:12:39.07\00:12:42.50 asking questions, well why do you keep the 00:12:42.53\00:12:44.34 Sabbath and why do you do this, and then often we 00:12:44.37\00:12:48.27 can give Bible studies while they're here. 00:12:48.30\00:12:50.20 The results are really encouraging at the end of 00:12:50.85\00:12:55.09 a session, we have a graduation and it's really 00:12:56.65\00:13:01.91 encouraging to see that and I encourage many of 00:13:01.94\00:13:04.13 our staff if they ever wonder, if they're being 00:13:04.16\00:13:07.12 effective here to go and listen to one of those 00:13:07.15\00:13:09.66 graduation services. Yeah, there is a lot that's 00:13:10.13\00:13:12.85 included in our program and people, you know, 00:13:12.88\00:13:16.99 when they go through our program they give 00:13:17.02\00:13:18.53 testimonies at the end of it. And they're just 00:13:18.56\00:13:20.94 thrilled with our program. What a testimony to the 00:13:20.97\00:13:25.58 healing touch of our creator. 00:13:25.61\00:13:27.08 ASI is blessed to have member organizations 00:13:27.77\00:13:30.41 like Wildwood and others that are focused on 00:13:30.44\00:13:33.24 service and outreach, sharing Christ in the 00:13:33.27\00:13:36.39 marketplace. If you'd like more information about 00:13:36.42\00:13:38.89 Wildwood Lifestyle Center, call 1-800-634-9355 00:13:38.92\00:13:44.96 or visit www.wildwoodhealth.org. 00:13:44.99\00:13:50.11 ASI was founded in 1947 when a group of 25 self 00:13:52.24\00:13:56.71 supporting Adventist schools and healthcare 00:13:56.74\00:13:58.81 ministries form the association of Seventh-Day 00:13:58.84\00:14:01.70 Adventist self supporting institutions or ASI. 00:14:01.73\00:14:04.68 As ASI expanded over the years the number of 00:14:05.64\00:14:08.43 businesses, entrepreneurs, and 00:14:08.46\00:14:10.53 professionals joined us well. 00:14:10.56\00:14:11.98 So, to better reflect ASI's diverse membership in 00:14:12.59\00:14:16.17 1979 our name was changed to 00:14:16.20\00:14:18.63 Adventist-Layman's Services & Industries. 00:14:18.66\00:14:21.46 When you're out there in the mission field and 00:14:22.36\00:14:24.02 you're working trying to build God's kingdom, 00:14:24.05\00:14:26.49 you know, you sometimes may feel a little lonely. 00:14:27.13\00:14:29.03 Sometimes we feel like Elijah, I am alone. 00:14:29.06\00:14:33.20 Coming to the ASI conference really has 00:14:33.23\00:14:35.47 helped me to see that there are other 00:14:35.82\00:14:37.76 professionals around the world. 00:14:37.79\00:14:39.28 If you want to get encouraged in your 00:14:39.31\00:14:40.60 ministry you need to come to ASI. 00:14:40.63\00:14:42.09 A focus on evangelism was one of the things that 00:14:53.76\00:14:56.58 drew Norman and Gayle Wrights to ASI. 00:14:56.61\00:14:59.28 And as ASI members they have enjoyed 00:15:00.10\00:15:01.90 associating with people, who are excited about 00:15:01.93\00:15:05.07 sharing Christ. Norman and Gayle have gone on 00:15:05.10\00:15:08.40 evangelism trips for a number of years now and 00:15:08.43\00:15:11.64 they're active in reaching out to people right in their 00:15:11.67\00:15:14.38 own community. They even brought their bank 00:15:14.41\00:15:17.38 teller to church. Let's find out how God 00:15:17.41\00:15:20.55 has worked through them. 00:15:20.58\00:15:22.27 This is the receipt for the cow that was purchased 00:15:26.94\00:15:29.43 in station Ghanpur, India. 00:15:29.46\00:15:31.05 Station Ghanpur was a site of our meeting, they 00:15:35.62\00:15:38.42 have 12 villages outside of station Ghanpur and 00:15:38.45\00:15:42.61 one of those villages as we were walking around 00:15:42.64\00:15:44.78 from house to house, there was a family that 00:15:44.81\00:15:48.00 was crying, they were in tears, we thought 00:15:48.03\00:15:51.81 somebody had died, that was the translation 00:15:51.84\00:15:54.40 obtained through by our guide that someone has 00:15:54.43\00:15:57.14 died and we learned that it have been their cow, 00:15:57.17\00:15:59.09 their sole source of livelihood, it gave them 00:15:59.89\00:16:02.81 milk, it gave them cheese, and they could sell it, and 00:16:02.84\00:16:05.85 so it was their cash income. They didn't know how 00:16:05.88\00:16:08.74 they are going to survive. We talked later that day 00:16:08.77\00:16:11.94 with the handlers from Maranatha and they said 00:16:11.97\00:16:16.54 yes they could arrange to buy a cow and they found 00:16:16.57\00:16:20.47 a cow, and they bought it from a market two towns 00:16:20.50\00:16:23.89 away and they brought it to the family and that 00:16:23.92\00:16:26.62 family came till the last night of the meetings and 00:16:26.65\00:16:29.79 was extremely appreciative. You know they bowed 00:16:29.82\00:16:33.48 down, we have to tell them don't bow down, 00:16:33.51\00:16:35.69 you know, not, not, not to worship, but to rejoice 00:16:35.72\00:16:39.32 that God is good and for them it meant their 00:16:39.35\00:16:41.69 livelihood, it meant that four people had a way to 00:16:41.72\00:16:44.72 live, they had a business. It comforted us because 00:16:44.75\00:16:48.97 that's what ASI is all about really. 00:16:49.00\00:16:50.77 We are self employed, the criteria for a full 00:16:51.31\00:16:53.95 membership in ASI is that you are a personal entity 00:16:53.98\00:16:58.92 that makes a panel. You know what it means to 00:16:58.95\00:17:02.20 have expenses, to have income and to make the 00:17:02.23\00:17:07.03 business work. That's exactly what they had in 00:17:07.06\00:17:09.36 this family, they had a cow, they had to feed it 00:17:09.39\00:17:11.78 and it gave them their life. 00:17:12.18\00:17:13.32 I made my living for 35 years by practicing law. 00:17:15.04\00:17:18.57 First half in my career, I practiced Patent 00:17:19.38\00:17:21.32 Trademark Copyright Law, now I practice 00:17:21.35\00:17:23.54 estates and trust. Outside of that, we have a 00:17:23.57\00:17:27.39 Nathan Green picture called the silent partner, 00:17:27.42\00:17:29.55 it shows a customer and a business man with Jesus 00:17:30.10\00:17:34.52 in the background and that I would say for 90% 00:17:34.55\00:17:39.54 of our clients is a sign that we are a believer in God. 00:17:39.57\00:17:43.60 Jesus is the silent partner in this business 00:17:44.30\00:17:46.41 and we must have had several dozen people 00:17:46.44\00:17:48.62 comment that they know we're Christian and that 00:17:49.52\00:17:52.74 they're a believer too. It's very interesting that when 00:17:52.77\00:17:55.55 we put up that picture, we intended to put blinds 00:17:55.58\00:17:59.27 in the front of our office, we have three windows, 00:17:59.30\00:18:01.20 we intended to have privacy with the blind, 00:18:01.70\00:18:03.47 and the landlord promised us as a condition of 00:18:03.50\00:18:06.74 moving in that he would put blinds there, and he 00:18:06.77\00:18:09.85 didn't do it after a couple of months, we reminded 00:18:09.88\00:18:11.70 him, he didn't do it. And after a year he hadn't 00:18:11.73\00:18:14.96 done it and I realized that because the blinds weren't 00:18:14.99\00:18:17.25 there, people would walk by the front of our office 00:18:17.28\00:18:19.98 could see the picture and comment, and so I just 00:18:20.01\00:18:22.87 decided we will leave the blinds down, let the 00:18:22.90\00:18:24.88 picture tell a story. We have three literature 00:18:24.91\00:18:28.75 racks in our office, we have material that 00:18:28.78\00:18:33.66 particularly relates to death because our estate 00:18:33.69\00:18:36.27 practice is oriented that way, every time we meet 00:18:36.30\00:18:39.79 a client we are talking about what happens when 00:18:39.82\00:18:42.38 you die. What do you want to happen, who are 00:18:42.41\00:18:45.12 your heirs, it's not a taboo subject, it is the subject 00:18:45.15\00:18:49.10 that we are dealing with. You didn't do the trust 00:18:49.13\00:18:52.03 that your brother would be your heir and that's 00:18:52.06\00:18:54.24 not what you want. Right. 00:18:54.27\00:18:56.11 You want your stepchildren. Yes, because I feel that 00:18:56.14\00:19:00.10 they have a future and Shelby, she is a grade A 00:19:00.59\00:19:04.66 student, she's a 4.1, right, she was good in high 00:19:04.69\00:19:08.11 school and they have potential 00:19:08.14\00:19:11.67 of going a long way. Good. About two weeks we will 00:19:12.37\00:19:16.56 send your draft and we will see you 00:19:16.59\00:19:18.30 back here after that. Okay. So, I'm glad to have you 00:19:18.33\00:19:20.99 as a client. Thank you. 00:19:21.02\00:19:22.81 The best indicator that we are different is my wife 00:19:25.20\00:19:30.32 who was our office manager and receptionist. 00:19:30.35\00:19:32.95 She is the people, the person that people see 00:19:33.57\00:19:35.90 they hear her, they talk to her, she is nice to 00:19:36.61\00:19:39.24 everybody, and that's not common in this world. 00:19:39.27\00:19:42.36 People will say they've called three law offices 00:19:43.29\00:19:45.63 and they got a certain kind of treatment and 00:19:45.66\00:19:48.42 then they talk to my wife and she is nice to them, 00:19:48.45\00:19:50.65 she is thorough with them, and she greets them 00:19:50.68\00:19:52.86 in person, she treats everybody like a friend, 00:19:52.89\00:19:54.90 like they're worthy of respect. By the time they 00:19:55.63\00:19:58.70 see me, you know, they are sold on the fact that 00:19:58.73\00:20:01.38 this is person that want to be. 00:20:01.41\00:20:02.61 Thank you. How are you today? 00:20:02.64\00:20:07.40 Cold, but not bad. That's going to warm up 00:20:07.43\00:20:10.43 they say. We have the literature rack and we 00:20:10.46\00:20:14.37 just, we have pictures of Jesus as our partner, 00:20:14.40\00:20:21.12 and we have the Ten Commandments up there, 00:20:21.58\00:20:24.42 and we just let people know that we are 00:20:24.88\00:20:27.37 Adventists and sometimes there is a situation that we 00:20:27.40\00:20:31.62 can even pray with our clients when they're here. 00:20:31.65\00:20:35.09 I would say we have half a dozen of our clients, 00:20:36.60\00:20:38.80 who have become Seventh-Day Adventists 00:20:38.83\00:20:40.18 over the years. There are different stories, different 00:20:40.21\00:20:43.43 ways, my forte is preaching, but we will 00:20:43.46\00:20:47.17 also have Bible studies, in this office we have held 00:20:47.20\00:20:50.04 probably four series of Bible studies. 00:20:50.77\00:20:53.11 We had a woman come to our Bible study. 00:20:53.14\00:20:55.46 She was going through, she decided to become an 00:20:56.81\00:20:59.66 Adventist and then her husband got notice that he 00:20:59.69\00:21:05.07 was gong to be transferred, transferred 00:21:05.10\00:21:07.38 from Alameda Naval Air Station to San Diego, and 00:21:07.41\00:21:11.06 so she wanted to get baptized here in 00:21:11.09\00:21:13.03 Hayward, this is where she studied, this is where 00:21:13.06\00:21:14.64 she made her decision. A pastor went to her home 00:21:14.67\00:21:17.72 to go through the check list for baptism. 00:21:18.46\00:21:20.39 He had never met her, she'd come to our office, 00:21:20.75\00:21:22.99 she would come to our studies, and now she 00:21:23.02\00:21:24.57 wanted to get baptized, and her husband who had 00:21:24.60\00:21:27.22 never come to a study, never come to church said 00:21:27.25\00:21:31.56 pastor I want to get baptized too, and the 00:21:32.12\00:21:36.26 pastor said to him, you've never been to church, 00:21:36.29\00:21:39.11 you've never taken a Bible study. 00:21:39.14\00:21:40.79 How in the world can you want to be baptized? 00:21:41.50\00:21:44.38 And he said well my wife would go to the studies 00:21:45.07\00:21:47.43 on Sunday afternoon, she would bring 00:21:47.46\00:21:49.51 her lessons home. She would tell me 00:21:50.04\00:21:51.93 everything she learned, as she learned I learned, 00:21:51.96\00:21:55.61 and I accepted everything all the way along as well, 00:21:56.29\00:22:00.57 and I want to be baptized too. 00:22:00.92\00:22:02.60 And the pastor was a very wise man, he said 00:22:03.12\00:22:06.74 okay, he went through the same process, they were 00:22:06.77\00:22:10.80 both baptized together, the last Sabbath they were 00:22:10.83\00:22:14.12 ever at the Hayward church. I have never seen her 00:22:14.15\00:22:17.34 since, I hear about them from time to time, but 00:22:17.37\00:22:20.85 they left Hayward and went to San Diego, they 00:22:20.88\00:22:23.04 joined a church down there. They became the pathfinder 00:22:23.07\00:22:26.44 leaders, they sent both of their children through San 00:22:26.47\00:22:29.38 Diego Academy and they're in the church today. 00:22:29.41\00:22:32.22 Norm, how long have we been members of ASI. 00:22:34.74\00:22:37.51 Ten years. Ten years. I tried to getting to be 00:22:38.99\00:22:43.21 member before we became members, he says 00:22:43.24\00:22:46.23 I, he didn't have time to do it. 00:22:46.26\00:22:48.31 Well, for many years I resisted joining ASI, 00:22:48.34\00:22:51.09 we had a member of our church who would go to 00:22:51.12\00:22:53.64 the meetings and come back all enthused and try 00:22:53.67\00:22:55.88 to promote my wife and I to join, but I was busy 00:22:55.91\00:22:59.63 with many other things, so I just didn't join. 00:22:59.66\00:23:02.22 The reason that I joined was because I have a very 00:23:02.74\00:23:06.59 strong interest in evangelism and when 00:23:06.62\00:23:08.74 I learned that ASI was really all about 00:23:08.77\00:23:12.66 supporting evangelism, I decided we should go and 00:23:12.69\00:23:15.94 check it out, and in fact it is mostly about getting 00:23:15.97\00:23:22.08 inspired, going and hearing about other 00:23:22.11\00:23:23.85 people, rubbing shoulders, networking 00:23:23.88\00:23:26.45 with people, who are also doing evangelism. 00:23:26.48\00:23:28.57 And you just see people from all over the world 00:23:28.60\00:23:32.38 that are lay people just like we are and they're 00:23:32.41\00:23:36.77 doing things for the Lord. Well as a result of ASI 00:23:36.80\00:23:40.11 we've made connections that have taken us to a 00:23:40.14\00:23:43.28 number of foreign countries to do preaching. 00:23:43.31\00:23:45.77 My business is about law, I speak for a living, I get 00:23:46.46\00:23:49.93 paid for words, whether they're spoken or written. 00:23:49.96\00:23:51.94 I am all thumbs, I couldn't lay brick easily, 00:23:52.63\00:23:56.48 I couldn't do other things easily, but there are 00:23:56.51\00:23:59.89 people who can and are able to do that. 00:23:59.92\00:24:02.71 What ASI is about? It's not about being an elitist, 00:24:04.52\00:24:08.00 not about either having a lot of wealth or a lot of 00:24:08.55\00:24:11.81 professional skill, it's about inspiration. 00:24:11.84\00:24:14.63 You go there and you meet people who are 00:24:15.09\00:24:16.99 doing it, whether they're drilling wells in Kenya, 00:24:17.02\00:24:20.47 whether they're running an orphanage in Guatemala. 00:24:22.02\00:24:24.04 They're out there doing it, and so my particular forte 00:24:24.66\00:24:28.58 is using words and that would be in preaching. 00:24:28.61\00:24:30.71 So, the first meeting that we went to 00:24:31.33\00:24:33.90 was in the Philippines. I met at an ASI meeting, 00:24:33.93\00:24:38.14 a Philippine pastor, who said to me Norman lets 00:24:38.17\00:24:41.79 go do a meeting. You do the preaching and I'll 00:24:41.82\00:24:44.58 make them happy. So, he was the man that did the 00:24:44.61\00:24:47.77 song service and I answered Bible questions, 00:24:47.80\00:24:51.48 and then he turned it over to me and I did the 00:24:51.51\00:24:53.10 preaching. Well, what ASI has done, it has 00:24:53.13\00:24:56.50 magnified our effectiveness. We have had before ASI 00:24:56.53\00:25:01.14 gone to Poland, to Armenia, to Indonesia, 00:25:01.17\00:25:04.22 and we had baptism accounts like 20, 10, 70. 00:25:04.74\00:25:10.79 With ASI with the materials and with the 00:25:11.64\00:25:13.85 opportunities, we've been allowed the privilege of 00:25:13.88\00:25:17.51 going to larger venues and being more effective. 00:25:17.54\00:25:20.44 ASI is integrated into the world church and so if 00:25:20.91\00:25:24.86 you're connected with ASI, you're accepted in a 00:25:24.89\00:25:27.56 lot of places and you are given larger 00:25:27.59\00:25:29.70 opportunities. Through ASI, I have gotten 00:25:29.73\00:25:32.72 a broader range of materials. About 10 years 00:25:33.25\00:25:36.38 ago, ASI leadership decided to develop a 00:25:36.41\00:25:39.54 standard DVD, it's called new beginnings. 00:25:39.57\00:25:43.18 This is the booklet that has all the sermon texts 00:25:43.21\00:25:47.73 and everything in it. The pictures match up to the 00:25:47.76\00:25:52.52 DVD that they're given. And it has greater 00:25:52.96\00:25:56.60 graphics, that has theologically harmonious 00:25:56.63\00:26:02.76 material, and it's been translated into 00:26:02.79\00:26:05.94 about 42 languages. So, it's not perfect, 00:26:05.97\00:26:08.87 it's kind of one size fits all, but it takes the lowest 00:26:09.49\00:26:14.88 common denominator to a very high level. 00:26:14.91\00:26:17.07 We were taking our vacations, but why not 00:26:17.77\00:26:22.09 take a vacation with the Lord. And so we set, 00:26:22.12\00:26:26.89 if we know that we are going go on a mission trip 00:26:26.92\00:26:29.35 we set our calendar, so that we get the work done 00:26:29.60\00:26:34.06 before and then set what needs to be done after we 00:26:34.09\00:26:37.34 get back. And the Lord blesses our 00:26:37.37\00:26:39.93 office while we're gone. We have found without 00:26:39.96\00:26:44.71 exception that when we are committed to do 00:26:44.74\00:26:48.08 mission work, we have not suffered upon and he 00:26:48.11\00:26:53.57 can bring us one case, one case that pays us for all 00:26:53.60\00:26:57.57 the time that we've ever given. 00:26:57.60\00:26:58.57 Yes, he is extremely faithful and has allowed 00:26:59.30\00:27:01.91 us to really commit to doing things. 00:27:01.94\00:27:06.44 We are leaving for two weeks the end of next month. 00:27:06.47\00:27:10.58 We are going to be in three countries, we'll 00:27:11.31\00:27:13.62 probably close our office cold turkey and if past 00:27:13.65\00:27:17.61 experience is true, there won't have been any harm 00:27:17.64\00:27:20.89 and there will be things waiting to do. 00:27:21.45\00:27:23.08 Norman and Gayle consider a blessing to 00:27:26.83\00:27:28.85 serve their Lord both at home and abroad. 00:27:28.88\00:27:31.74 ASI is made up of people who shared Norman and 00:27:32.34\00:27:35.10 Gayle's passion for active service. People who are 00:27:35.13\00:27:38.58 excited to be involved in 00:27:38.61\00:27:39.87 winning souls for Jesus Christ. 00:27:39.90\00:27:41.48 For more information about ASI and becoming 00:27:42.30\00:27:44.70 a member, call 301-680-6450 or visit 00:27:44.73\00:27:50.61 www.asiministries.org.
