So as I would go to different

was around 1983 or so,

"Where are we as Seventh-day

And so that was on my mind.

And then

one night I was
watching a Christian program.

And they were talking about
when the rapture comes that,

all come to that TV station

and for seven years...

So I went to
bed and it was like,

tell you when it was,

1984, late night hours,

before getting ready for bed.

And that was just on my mind.

to reach the world?"

hit me very strongly.

So how did you even start
out and what's your first step?

that it was God and not you.

I'm a carpenter by trade.

My brother and
I, we build houses.

It's what we do for a living.

We sing,

my daughter and I travel
part time singing gospel music.

So the very
first thing I did was,

well, let's see, I
don't have any money.

I don't have property.

I don't know
anything about television.

So I said, I need to go,

there was a station
down in Marion, Illinois.

I said, I need to go
down and just look at it.

I was staying there

but I need to go
down and kind of see

what a TV looks like.

So I called to my
brothers and said,

"Hey, you guys want
to go with me to Marion

and I buy your lunch,

but I want to
stop to TV station,

get a little tour."

We met Clarence Larson there,

which I knew
Clarence from West Frankfort.

I've met him a few times,

didn't know that he lived
two country blocks from me.
00:06:18.61\00:06:21.64
And he was an engineer.
00:06:21.68\00:06:23.38
So I was there and said,

"Clarence, I
would like to, kind of,

show my
brothers, I've been here,

but I want to see the
back side of this station.

I want to go in the
engineering department

and the equipment,

which I had never
paid attention to before."

So he took us through there.

And then he said,
"Can I talk to you?"

I said, "Yes."

Now Clarence was a
Baptist at the time,

and working at a
charismatic station.

So he said to me,

"I think of Shelton's
as carpenters and singers,

but for some reason,
I just feel impressed,

I'm supposed to help you.

I think you're going to
build a television station."

Oh, wow.

And so I said, "Well..."

Have you expressed
the dream to him, or...

No, I was just
telling him what I was doing.

So he said, "I think

that you're going to do this

about television for a reason."

I said, "Yeah."

I said, "What kind of
stations is full power?"

I said, "How far will it reach?"

You know, 'cause I
want to reach the world.

He said, "Oh,

it might reach
40-50 miles, or so."

I said, "No, I want
to reach the world."

He said, "I need to talk to you.

I've been
studying microwave signals,

and how to uplink."

I've never heard that word.

I said, "What's that?"

in TV stations like this.

At that time, nobody

was doing around
the world totally.

But like North
America, we were able to do it.

So, you know, I ended
up going to his house,

he had little Apple II computer.

And it just began from there.

I called people
that I knew and said,

"Hey, we're going to build

a television
station to reach the world."

And those who knew
me kind of laughed,

and some were
quiet, and, you know,

others said very little.

But we just took
it one step at a time.

The blessing of
God was on the go.

That's what I found
over and over and over again.

You know, so just
there's so many miracle stories

as we think about
the beginnings of 3ABN.

And again, we're just,

you know, again,

and these
stories of Mr. Shelton,

miracles of how 3ABN started.

But in the very
beginning, once Clarence said,

you anything you need to do

from an engineering standpoint,"

that was incredible.

That's a
miracle. That was miracle.

So I went to prayer
meeting on Wednesday night,

probably 15 people there.

And so, I was so excited.

I wanted to get up and
tell the little group there,

what the Lord had

give a little testimony to them.

But I told them,
the Lord impressed me

to build a station
to reach the world.

There was a lady
there named Fonda Summers.

Fonda lived out
towards Thompsonville area,

and she's had come
to an Adventist church

for a very first time.
00:09:20.82\00:09:22.26
She's Methodist.
00:09:22.29\00:09:23.63
My mother was giving her,
00:09:23.66\00:09:24.99
started giving
her Bible studies.
00:09:25.03\00:09:26.36
So she came,
literally came to church,

and didn't say anything.

But two nights
later Friday evening,

my mother called me and said,

Fonda Summers
called me and she said...

You know, I
really I was praying,

I said, "Lord, I'd
like to help those guys

start the TV station,

but I don't have any money."

And she said,
"The Lord said to me,

'What is this you
have in your hand?'"

Amen. Praise the Lord.

She said, "Well, I
don't have anything here

but a few acres of property."

So I said,

"Well, I could give
some acreage in the back."

We had owned
this about 40 years.

My husband had died. I had it.

And we were going
to sell it at one time.

But the back
end of the property,

I had a dream and I
saw a big fence around it.

And I saw the most
beautiful fatted cattle

And I've always thought

used for something for the Lord,

The miracle was,
is when we ended up

through Clarence
getting scientific Atlanta

from Georgia, everybody coming

'cause there's microwave signals
00:10:30.09\00:10:31.53
all in the area, that two acres,

and even on one side of that
two acres was the only spot,

we could put this 30 foot,

10 meter just about
dish, satellite dish up,

that could shoot signals
to any satellite in space

with no interferences.

Some places you could put up,

And then for it to turn
out to be the exact spot

ever doubt God is in it.
