- You might not know this, 00:00:00.76\00:00:01.86 but you might just be the executor 00:00:01.86\00:00:04.13 of someone's last will and testament. 00:00:04.13\00:00:06.37 This is a show you're not gonna wanna miss. 00:00:06.37\00:00:09.24 [mellow music] 00:00:09.24\00:00:11.87 A lot of folks don't really know this, 00:00:30.23\00:00:31.86 but one of the services we offer at the Voice of Prophecy 00:00:31.86\00:00:34.93 is to help people get their final affairs in order. 00:00:34.93\00:00:37.50 And we like to do that, well, 00:00:37.50\00:00:39.03 well in advance of the moment 00:00:39.03\00:00:40.57 when it might actually become, well, urgent. 00:00:40.57\00:00:43.87 When that day comes that your doctor 00:00:43.87\00:00:45.37 finally gives you some really bad news 00:00:45.37\00:00:47.71 and you realize you've run out of time 00:00:47.71\00:00:49.54 just like everybody else, 00:00:49.54\00:00:51.41 the last thing you wanna do 00:00:51.41\00:00:52.81 is be forced into a position 00:00:52.81\00:00:54.68 where you have to plan your final wishes under pressure. 00:00:54.68\00:00:57.92 Because then, it's an emergency, 00:00:57.92\00:00:59.85 and you're not always gonna do your best thinking 00:00:59.85\00:01:02.06 in an emergency. 00:01:02.06\00:01:03.36 So, what we tend to do is encourage people 00:01:03.36\00:01:05.83 to think about this well in advance 00:01:05.83\00:01:07.66 so you can sit down quietly and really think things through. 00:01:07.66\00:01:11.17 And I know it's not a comfortable subject, 00:01:11.17\00:01:13.10 but trust me, 00:01:13.10\00:01:14.50 you're gonna have to deal with it at some point. 00:01:14.50\00:01:16.37 And of course, when you're drawing up your estate plan, 00:01:16.37\00:01:19.11 we do like it when you think about 00:01:19.11\00:01:20.71 the needs of this ministry. 00:01:20.71\00:01:21.98 But listen, we'll help you whether or not 00:01:21.98\00:01:24.21 you feel like including us. 00:01:24.21\00:01:26.51 Death is a part of life for absolutely everybody. 00:01:26.51\00:01:29.98 And if we're gonna make the effort 00:01:29.98\00:01:31.29 to help you live in authentic human life, 00:01:31.29\00:01:32.82 then we really want to help you 00:01:32.82\00:01:34.59 with the final phase as well. 00:01:34.59\00:01:37.06 So, as a result of this, 00:01:37.06\00:01:39.09 the ministry has become the executor 00:01:39.09\00:01:40.96 for a lot of estates over the decades, 00:01:40.96\00:01:43.16 which makes it our responsibility to make sure 00:01:43.16\00:01:45.70 that your final wishes become reality. 00:01:45.70\00:01:48.74 It's a responsibility we take very seriously, 00:01:48.74\00:01:51.31 because there's something sacred 00:01:51.31\00:01:53.64 about a person's final wishes, 00:01:53.64\00:01:55.18 something that most of us consider inviolable. 00:01:55.18\00:01:59.38 Of course, sometimes that can create 00:01:59.38\00:02:01.12 a tiny bit of friction with friends and family 00:02:01.12\00:02:03.28 who aren't entirely happy with what you decided. 00:02:03.28\00:02:06.15 "What do you mean, I only get a third? 00:02:06.15\00:02:08.19 I took care of mom in the end, 00:02:08.19\00:02:09.82 so I deserve more than all my siblings!" 00:02:09.82\00:02:12.19 You know, that kind of stuff. 00:02:12.19\00:02:14.00 And so, sometimes, 00:02:14.00\00:02:15.40 people will try to get us to waffle on the will. 00:02:15.40\00:02:16.97 But at the end of the day, 00:02:16.97\00:02:18.23 there's no way we're willing to do that, 00:02:18.23\00:02:19.67 because our job 00:02:19.67\00:02:21.40 is to stick to the wishes of the deceased. 00:02:21.40\00:02:24.07 It's their will, it's their wishes. 00:02:24.07\00:02:26.84 An executor who starts to play loose with a will 00:02:26.84\00:02:29.71 is doing something really inappropriate. 00:02:29.71\00:02:31.85 [soft music] 00:02:31.85\00:02:33.31 Most of us recognize that a final will and testament 00:02:33.31\00:02:35.38 is a really solemn thing, 00:02:35.38\00:02:37.45 something that should not be altered, ever. 00:02:37.45\00:02:40.36 It is, after all, your final word to the world. 00:02:40.36\00:02:43.19 It's the last thing you do. 00:02:43.19\00:02:45.23 The possessions you have the day you die 00:02:45.23\00:02:47.40 are a huge part of what you actually 00:02:47.40\00:02:49.00 traded your time for in this world. 00:02:49.00\00:02:51.90 Of course, I'm not such a materialist 00:02:51.90\00:02:54.07 that I believe you are only the sum of the things you own, 00:02:54.07\00:02:56.40 because, well, that would be incredibly shallow 00:02:56.40\00:02:58.81 and tragically inadequate. 00:02:58.81\00:03:00.54 In fact, you might remember that on one occasion 00:03:00.54\00:03:02.91 when somebody was disputing his share 00:03:02.91\00:03:04.71 of his father's estate, 00:03:04.71\00:03:06.11 Jesus warned him, 00:03:06.11\00:03:07.62 "Take care, and be on your guard against covetousness, 00:03:07.62\00:03:10.99 for one's life does not consist 00:03:10.99\00:03:12.99 in the abundance of his possessions." 00:03:12.99\00:03:15.09 In other words, 00:03:15.09\00:03:16.49 the definition of you is greater than the stuff you own. 00:03:16.49\00:03:20.73 But of course, that doesn't mean 00:03:20.73\00:03:22.13 that the stuff you leave behind isn't important. 00:03:22.13\00:03:25.20 Most of us trade the majority of our lives earning wages, 00:03:25.20\00:03:28.97 and we use those wages to buy the things we need. 00:03:28.97\00:03:32.57 And that's a completely honorable way to spend your 00:03:32.57\00:03:35.74 life. I mean, the alternative is to demand 00:03:35.74\00:03:37.75 that somebody else works to provide for your needs, 00:03:37.75\00:03:39.81 and that is not the right way to live. 00:03:39.81\00:03:42.25 So, you trade your labor for the things you need. 00:03:42.25\00:03:45.05 And at one point in history, 00:03:45.05\00:03:46.32 way back when, 00:03:46.32\00:03:47.82 some economic genius came up 00:03:47.82\00:03:49.69 with a universal means of exchange, 00:03:49.69\00:03:52.46 money. 00:03:52.46\00:03:54.00 Now, I know the subject of money on a religious show 00:03:54.00\00:03:56.23 always seems a little shady. 00:03:56.23\00:03:58.20 I'll be the first to admit that a lot of modern preachers 00:03:58.20\00:04:00.67 have actually made a farce of the Christian faith 00:04:00.67\00:04:02.90 in the way they talk about it. 00:04:02.90\00:04:04.71 As a minister, I'm usually deeply embarrassed 00:04:04.71\00:04:07.41 by the prosperity preachers 00:04:07.41\00:04:08.81 who prey on the weak, the sick, and the poor 00:04:08.81\00:04:11.71 by telling them that God will make them incredibly wealthy 00:04:11.71\00:04:14.28 or even heal them if they only send in their meager funds. 00:04:14.28\00:04:18.15 And of course, that same preacher 00:04:18.15\00:04:19.92 then suddenly moves into a bigger house 00:04:19.92\00:04:22.16 and the promised miracle never seems to materialize. 00:04:22.16\00:04:25.76 It's despicable. 00:04:25.76\00:04:27.13 And I'm personally convinced 00:04:27.13\00:04:28.40 that God will hold these people accountable, 00:04:28.40\00:04:30.47 and I wouldn't wanna be in their shoes on judgment day. 00:04:30.47\00:04:33.64 And I don't think I need to name names, 00:04:33.64\00:04:35.20 because most of you already know 00:04:35.20\00:04:37.41 exactly which preachers I'm talking about. 00:04:37.41\00:04:39.71 So, yeah, terrible people have given the faith 00:04:39.71\00:04:42.21 a bit of a black eye when it comes to the subject of money. 00:04:42.21\00:04:45.58 Skeptics tend to think of the church 00:04:45.58\00:04:47.45 as a moneymaking scheme, 00:04:47.45\00:04:49.42 and they're not entirely wrong. 00:04:49.42\00:04:50.69 Given the absolute garbage I've seen, 00:04:50.69\00:04:52.99 I can understand why somebody might think that. 00:04:52.99\00:04:55.79 But is the subject of money really a dirty subject? 00:04:55.79\00:05:00.06 Well, absolutely not. 00:05:00.06\00:05:01.43 In fact, as I mentioned a moment ago, 00:05:01.43\00:05:03.50 the invention of money was kind of genius, 00:05:03.50\00:05:05.63 because it solved a lot of problems. 00:05:05.63\00:05:07.77 It created a lot of problems, too, 00:05:07.77\00:05:10.11 but at the end of the day, 00:05:10.11\00:05:11.34 it was a pretty good idea. 00:05:11.34\00:05:13.21 I mean, let's just think about it. 00:05:13.21\00:05:14.94 Let's say that I raise chickens 00:05:14.94\00:05:17.01 and my chickens lay a lot of eggs. 00:05:17.01\00:05:18.51 In fact, they lay more eggs than I can use. 00:05:18.51\00:05:21.52 So, here I am. 00:05:21.52\00:05:22.72 I'm egg rich, but I'm shelter poor. 00:05:22.72\00:05:25.15 So, I approach some guy who owns a sawmill, and I say, 00:05:25.15\00:05:27.69 "Look, I'd like to trade some of these eggs 00:05:27.69\00:05:29.66 for some of your lumber." 00:05:29.66\00:05:31.23 And because he doesn't have enough food, he makes a deal. 00:05:31.23\00:05:34.40 But what would happen if the guy said, 00:05:34.40\00:05:36.43 "I don't want your eggs, I got lots to eat." 00:05:36.43\00:05:38.77 Well, then, what am I supposed to do? 00:05:38.77\00:05:40.60 Well, maybe I go looking for a seamstress 00:05:40.60\00:05:43.10 and I offer to trade eggs for clothes, and she agrees. 00:05:43.10\00:05:46.21 Now, I don't need clothes, 00:05:46.21\00:05:48.41 but the guy at the sawmill does, 00:05:48.41\00:05:50.31 and now I have something he wants, 00:05:50.31\00:05:51.91 and we can cut a deal. 00:05:51.91\00:05:53.78 Now, all of that is very inconvenient, 00:05:53.78\00:05:56.02 and some days I might have to barter 00:05:56.02\00:05:57.59 with 15 or 20 different people to actually get what I want. 00:05:57.59\00:06:01.52 The invention of money solved that problem. 00:06:01.52\00:06:04.69 Suddenly, we had a universal medium of exchange, 00:06:04.69\00:06:07.20 something that everybody can use, 00:06:07.20\00:06:09.86 and it eliminates the need 00:06:09.86\00:06:11.20 for a whole bunch of unnecessary effort. 00:06:11.20\00:06:13.94 But of course, the big question, 00:06:13.94\00:06:15.80 is money evil? 00:06:15.80\00:06:17.34 A lot of people think so, 00:06:17.34\00:06:18.47 but not according to the Bible. 00:06:18.47\00:06:20.71 According to scripture, 00:06:20.71\00:06:22.24 money is a brilliant tool if you put it in the hands 00:06:22.24\00:06:24.88 of decent and honest people. 00:06:24.88\00:06:26.68 And I know what some of you are thinking. 00:06:26.68\00:06:28.22 "Doesn't the Bible say that money is the root of all evil?" 00:06:28.22\00:06:31.42 Well, no, it doesn't. 00:06:31.42\00:06:33.59 Here's what it actually says 00:06:33.59\00:06:35.49 in Paul's first letter to Timothy, 00:06:35.49\00:06:37.79 where he writes, 00:06:37.79\00:06:39.33 "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. 00:06:39.33\00:06:42.76 It is through this craving 00:06:42.76\00:06:44.03 that some have wandered away from the faith 00:06:44.03\00:06:45.90 and pierced themselves with many pangs." 00:06:45.90\00:06:49.17 Now, history teaches us that Paul was absolutely right. 00:06:49.17\00:06:52.97 Loving money can cause a world of hurt. 00:06:52.97\00:06:55.51 And given the way that a lot of religious hucksters 00:06:55.51\00:06:57.81 have taken it upon themselves to get rich off the gospel, 00:06:57.81\00:07:00.88 perverting the teachings of Christ for personal gain, 00:07:00.88\00:07:04.89 well, Paul's passage pretty much speaks for itself. 00:07:04.89\00:07:07.69 And God alone knows how many people have been hurt 00:07:07.69\00:07:10.86 as these shysters operate. 00:07:10.86\00:07:13.53 But now, I'm kind of digressing a little 00:07:13.53\00:07:15.30 from where we started. 00:07:15.30\00:07:16.67 We were talking about your last will and testament 00:07:16.67\00:07:18.93 and the fact that most people consider these things 00:07:18.93\00:07:21.34 to be solemn and sacred. 00:07:21.34\00:07:23.37 Most of us instinctively know 00:07:23.37\00:07:25.14 you're not supposed to mess with somebody's will. 00:07:25.14\00:07:27.31 And after years of watching some families go to war, 00:07:27.31\00:07:30.91 I'm convinced that even some 00:07:30.91\00:07:32.21 of the most combative, self-centered people 00:07:32.21\00:07:34.18 somehow realize under all their vitriol 00:07:34.18\00:07:36.92 that what they're doing by contesting a will is wrong. 00:07:36.92\00:07:40.36 A person's final wishes are not a trivial matter. 00:07:40.36\00:07:42.99 After all, what someone leaves behind is a congealed life. 00:07:42.99\00:07:47.56 Their possessions, at least in part, 00:07:47.56\00:07:49.46 is what they exchanged their time on earth for. 00:07:49.46\00:07:51.97 It's more than just stuff. 00:07:51.97\00:07:53.70 It's a snapshot of who that person was. 00:07:53.70\00:07:56.54 For example, if it's a house, 00:07:56.54\00:07:58.31 then you know this person exchanged 00:07:58.31\00:07:59.77 his or her life to build a home. 00:07:59.77\00:08:01.64 It was important to them. 00:08:01.64\00:08:03.08 If it's a library, 00:08:03.08\00:08:04.65 which is about the only thing I'm ever gonna leave behind, 00:08:04.65\00:08:07.22 you know they prized learning. 00:08:07.22\00:08:09.25 If it's money, 00:08:09.25\00:08:10.55 it's another way to keep their influence alive 00:08:10.55\00:08:11.85 after they're gone. 00:08:11.85\00:08:12.69 It becomes an extension, 00:08:12.69\00:08:14.42 a way to do something good one last time. 00:08:14.42\00:08:18.13 Honestly, if you agree to be somebody's executor, 00:08:18.13\00:08:21.50 it's gonna be one of the most solemn responsibilities 00:08:21.50\00:08:23.87 you'll ever have. 00:08:23.87\00:08:25.10 And wouldn't you know it? 00:08:25.10\00:08:26.60 There's a sense in which you are 00:08:26.60\00:08:28.07 already somebody's executor, 00:08:28.07\00:08:30.34 and I'll be right back after this to explain it. 00:08:30.34\00:08:33.11 [mellow music] 00:08:33.11\00:08:35.91 [upbeat music] 00:08:35.91\00:08:37.25 - [Announcer] Here at The Voice of Prophecy, 00:08:37.25\00:08:38.65 we're committed to creating top-quality programming 00:08:38.65\00:08:40.65 for the whole family, 00:08:40.65\00:08:42.08 like our audio adventure series, "Discovery Mountain". 00:08:42.08\00:08:45.19 "Discovery Mountain" is a Bible-based program 00:08:45.19\00:08:47.76 for kids of all ages and backgrounds. 00:08:47.76\00:08:50.06 Your family will enjoy the faith-building stories 00:08:50.06\00:08:52.86 from this small mountain summer camp and town 00:08:52.86\00:08:55.70 with 24 seasonal episodes every year 00:08:55.70\00:08:58.17 and fresh content every week. 00:08:58.17\00:09:00.37 There's always a new adventure just on the horizon. 00:09:00.37\00:09:03.57 - Most of you are at least a little bit familiar 00:09:06.24\00:09:08.64 with some of the words Jesus spoke 00:09:08.64\00:09:10.31 the night before his crucifixion, 00:09:10.31\00:09:12.28 found in Luke 22. 00:09:12.28\00:09:14.82 It says: 00:09:14.82\00:09:15.88 And he took bread, 00:09:15.88\00:09:17.09 and when he had given thanks, 00:09:17.09\00:09:18.35 he broke it and gave it to them, saying, 00:09:18.35\00:09:20.39 "This is my body, which is given for you. 00:09:20.39\00:09:23.02 Do this in remembrance of me." 00:09:23.02\00:09:25.36 And likewise, the cup after they had eaten, saying, 00:09:25.36\00:09:28.13 "This cup that is poured out for you 00:09:28.13\00:09:30.80 is the new covenant in my blood." 00:09:30.80\00:09:34.27 In the Bible, 00:09:34.27\00:09:35.74 the idea of a covenant is a really, really big deal. 00:09:35.74\00:09:39.41 Over the years, theologians have pointed 00:09:39.41\00:09:41.24 to any number of covenants that God made with humanity. 00:09:41.24\00:09:44.48 There's a covenant with Adam, a covenant with Noah, 00:09:44.48\00:09:47.62 a covenant with Abraham, and so on. 00:09:47.62\00:09:51.05 But what we find here in the story of the Last Supper 00:09:51.05\00:09:54.66 is mention of the new covenant. 00:09:54.66\00:09:57.39 And another word for covenant is testament, 00:09:57.39\00:10:00.26 as in the Old and New Testaments. 00:10:00.26\00:10:03.26 And what do we call it when we write our final wishes 00:10:03.26\00:10:05.60 and have witnesses testify to its authenticity? 00:10:05.60\00:10:08.90 It's our last will and testament. 00:10:08.90\00:10:11.94 So, it turns out Jesus actually has one of those, 00:10:13.21\00:10:15.51 and the church that he started holds the role of executor. 00:10:15.51\00:10:18.78 It is up to believers 00:10:18.78\00:10:20.35 to execute Christ's will in this world, 00:10:20.35\00:10:22.88 the will that took effect 00:10:22.88\00:10:24.45 at the very moment of his death. 00:10:24.45\00:10:26.79 This is a thought that will open up 00:10:26.79\00:10:28.39 all kinds of possibilities 00:10:28.39\00:10:29.82 and broaden your understanding 00:10:29.82\00:10:31.13 of what it actually means to be a believer. 00:10:31.13\00:10:34.56 First of all, 00:10:34.56\00:10:35.66 it becomes very important to know 00:10:35.66\00:10:37.10 what the will actually says. 00:10:37.10\00:10:38.97 What exactly did Jesus want? 00:10:38.97\00:10:41.74 As an executor, 00:10:41.74\00:10:43.07 you don't get to operate by gut feeling 00:10:43.07\00:10:45.24 or redefine the work of the church. 00:10:45.24\00:10:47.64 You're expected to know what God actually wants. 00:10:47.64\00:10:50.75 It's not enough to feel like you're doing the right thing, 00:10:50.75\00:10:53.21 because, well, 00:10:53.21\00:10:54.52 we all know feelings can be remarkably deceptive. 00:10:54.52\00:10:57.45 I mean, I've heard all kinds of people say, 00:10:57.45\00:10:59.39 "I'm doing such and such because the Spirit told me to." 00:10:59.39\00:11:03.06 And sometimes, as I listen to them, I've gotta say, 00:11:03.06\00:11:04.99 "Well, maybe God told you to do that, 00:11:04.99\00:11:07.40 but maybe he didn't." 00:11:07.40\00:11:09.20 None of us has been given a license to go off-script. 00:11:09.20\00:11:12.87 What matters most is what this document says. 00:11:12.87\00:11:16.67 If I was a betting man, 00:11:16.67\00:11:18.01 and I'm not, I'm not a betting man, 00:11:18.01\00:11:19.71 but if I was, 00:11:19.71\00:11:21.14 I'd wager that a rather large percentage 00:11:21.14\00:11:23.65 of the harm done by Christians 00:11:23.65\00:11:25.48 is because they were operating by personal instinct 00:11:25.48\00:11:28.42 instead of sticking to what the will says. 00:11:28.42\00:11:31.19 And once you throw aside the will, 00:11:31.19\00:11:33.69 it's really all a matter of instinct, 00:11:33.69\00:11:35.92 and that's where the trouble starts. 00:11:35.92\00:11:38.16 I mean, imagine being the executor of an estate, 00:11:38.16\00:11:41.43 and the will says that Mike 00:11:41.43\00:11:42.96 gets the old piano in the living room. 00:11:42.96\00:11:45.30 But personally, you don't like Mike, 00:11:45.30\00:11:47.34 so you decide Sarah gets the piano instead 00:11:47.34\00:11:49.50 because she really, really wants it, 00:11:49.50\00:11:52.17 and, well, you kinda like her. 00:11:52.17\00:11:54.24 From that point forward, 00:11:54.24\00:11:55.91 what reason could you possibly give 00:11:55.91\00:11:58.01 to deny anybody's personal request? 00:11:58.01\00:12:00.78 Good luck preventing a civil war in that family. 00:12:00.78\00:12:04.12 And sadly, the church sometimes does something similar, 00:12:05.39\00:12:08.09 picking and choosing some favorite doctrines 00:12:08.09\00:12:10.23 or favorite groups of people. 00:12:10.23\00:12:12.43 Once you play loose with the terms of the covenant, 00:12:12.43\00:12:15.33 what chance would you have 00:12:15.33\00:12:17.20 of revealing an authentic Christ to the world? 00:12:17.20\00:12:19.97 What you're really doing is revealing yourself instead. 00:12:19.97\00:12:23.74 "Oh, wait a minute, though. 00:12:23.74\00:12:24.94 Isn't the church supposed to be dynamic? 00:12:24.94\00:12:26.74 Isn't it supposed to change with the times 00:12:26.74\00:12:28.51 and stay culturally relevant?" 00:12:28.51\00:12:30.81 Well, yeah, that's absolutely true. 00:12:30.81\00:12:33.62 The founding documents of the church were written 00:12:33.62\00:12:35.62 during the peak of power for the Roman Empire. 00:12:35.62\00:12:38.02 And so, of course, 00:12:38.02\00:12:39.22 our culture is somewhat different now 00:12:39.22\00:12:41.26 than it was 2,000 years ago. 00:12:41.26\00:12:43.66 But not as different as some people might think, 00:12:43.66\00:12:45.69 because there's a lot more Rome 00:12:45.69\00:12:47.23 hanging around in our culture than you might think. 00:12:47.23\00:12:49.63 And personally, as a side note, 00:12:49.63\00:12:51.30 I think that might be the reason 00:12:51.30\00:12:52.87 that when Western Rome splits into the nations of Europe 00:12:52.87\00:12:55.50 in the prophecy of Daniel 2, 00:12:55.50\00:12:58.04 you get iron mixed with clay in the feet, 00:12:58.04\00:13:00.14 because there's something left of iron Rome 00:13:00.14\00:13:02.48 in the cultures that emerge from that empire. 00:13:02.48\00:13:05.91 But even then, 00:13:05.91\00:13:07.28 culture changes from generation to generation. 00:13:07.28\00:13:10.39 What doesn't change is God. 00:13:10.39\00:13:13.12 The Bible assures us that he is the same 00:13:13.12\00:13:14.99 yesterday, today, and forever. 00:13:14.99\00:13:17.49 What the church needs to do 00:13:17.49\00:13:19.33 is apply eternal principles 00:13:19.33\00:13:20.93 to the culture they're living in, 00:13:20.93\00:13:22.73 and that's when the hard work begins. 00:13:22.73\00:13:25.23 It's one thing to say, 00:13:25.23\00:13:26.70 "I guess this part of the Bible is no longer true," 00:13:26.70\00:13:29.40 but it's a much different thing to say, 00:13:29.40\00:13:31.07 "How is this part of the Bible true, 00:13:31.07\00:13:33.04 given our current circumstances?" 00:13:33.04\00:13:35.18 Because the terms of the covenant do not change. 00:13:35.18\00:13:40.25 Now, do I have any biblical proof for that? 00:13:41.35\00:13:42.62 Well, yeah, I do. 00:13:42.62\00:13:44.05 Take a look at Hebrews 9, 00:13:44.05\00:13:45.69 where the author is explaining how the ministry of Christ 00:13:45.69\00:13:48.46 is the higher reality 00:13:48.46\00:13:50.36 behind the rituals of the Old Testament temple. 00:13:50.36\00:13:53.26 The sacrifices that took place under that old covenant 00:13:53.26\00:13:56.36 were symbols pointing forward 00:13:56.36\00:13:57.77 to the sacrifice of Christ on behalf of all of us. 00:13:57.77\00:14:01.24 The priests who worked in the temple were shadows or types 00:14:01.24\00:14:04.84 pointing forward to the work of Christ in heaven. 00:14:04.84\00:14:07.71 All of it was an object lesson 00:14:07.71\00:14:09.61 in the work of the coming Messiah 00:14:09.61\00:14:11.31 who would ultimately ratify the new covenant 00:14:11.31\00:14:13.78 with his own life. 00:14:13.78\00:14:15.22 So, now listen to what the author says 00:14:15.22\00:14:17.62 with regard to the testament of Christ, 00:14:17.62\00:14:19.52 his final will and testament, if you like. 00:14:19.52\00:14:22.52 This is Hebrews 9. 00:14:22.52\00:14:24.29 It says, "Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, 00:14:24.29\00:14:27.76 so that those who are called may receive 00:14:27.76\00:14:29.70 the promised eternal inheritance, 00:14:29.70\00:14:31.60 since a death has occurred that redeems them 00:14:31.60\00:14:34.07 from the transgressions committed under the first 00:14:34.07\00:14:37.27 covenant." Now, here comes the important part, 00:14:37.27\00:14:39.04 at least for our study today. 00:14:39.04\00:14:40.61 It says, 00:14:40.61\00:14:41.58 "For where a will is involved, 00:14:41.58\00:14:44.05 the death of the one who made it must be established. 00:14:44.05\00:14:47.05 For a will takes effect only at death, 00:14:47.05\00:14:49.88 since it is not in force 00:14:49.88\00:14:51.45 as long as the one who made it is alive." 00:14:51.45\00:14:54.42 What the author's telling us 00:14:54.42\00:14:55.96 is that the new covenant was ratified, or took effect, 00:14:55.96\00:14:59.06 at the moment of Christ's death. 00:14:59.06\00:15:01.40 It's really a lot like your will and testament, 00:15:01.40\00:15:04.10 if you think about it. 00:15:04.10\00:15:05.30 Up to the moment you die, 00:15:05.30\00:15:06.97 it's just a statement of your intentions. 00:15:06.97\00:15:09.47 But when you die, it becomes legally binding. 00:15:09.47\00:15:12.51 It comes into full effect. 00:15:12.51\00:15:14.91 And of course, once the author of the covenant dies, 00:15:14.91\00:15:17.75 you really can't change it anymore. 00:15:17.75\00:15:19.71 It's permanent. 00:15:19.71\00:15:21.15 That's why the job of executor is so very solemn. 00:15:21.15\00:15:23.75 There's no going back. 00:15:23.75\00:15:24.99 There are no changes once the testator, 00:15:24.99\00:15:27.19 or the author of the will, actually dies. 00:15:27.19\00:15:29.66 And again, you find this principle taught in the Bible. 00:15:29.66\00:15:32.66 Listen to what Paul says 00:15:32.66\00:15:34.10 in his letter to the church in Galatia. 00:15:34.10\00:15:36.90 "To give a human example, brothers," he writes: 00:15:36.90\00:15:40.07 Even with a manmade covenant, 00:15:40.07\00:15:41.74 no one annuls it or adds to it once it has been ratified. 00:15:41.74\00:15:45.21 Now, the promises were made 00:15:45.21\00:15:46.47 to Abraham and to his offspring. 00:15:46.47\00:15:48.84 It does not say, "And to offsprings," 00:15:48.84\00:15:50.85 referring to many, 00:15:50.85\00:15:52.11 but referring to one, 00:15:52.11\00:15:53.48 "And to your offspring," who is Christ. 00:15:53.48\00:15:56.95 Now, there's an awful lot of information 00:15:56.95\00:15:58.62 packed in that little statement. 00:15:58.62\00:16:00.09 And maybe one of these days, 00:16:00.09\00:16:01.22 we should just start working our way 00:16:01.22\00:16:02.42 through the whole Book of Galatians, 00:16:02.42\00:16:04.29 because it's easily one of the trickiest letters 00:16:04.29\00:16:07.03 that Paul ever wrote. 00:16:07.03\00:16:08.36 The metaphors he chose to use 00:16:08.36\00:16:10.70 have caused a lot of misunderstanding in some 00:16:10.70\00:16:13.97 circles. And I've seen a bad reading of Galatians 00:16:13.97\00:16:16.30 produce some, well, really bad theology. 00:16:16.30\00:16:19.61 But for now, let's just focus on the way 00:16:19.61\00:16:21.24 that Paul says that God's will and testament 00:16:21.24\00:16:23.75 are completely irrevocable. 00:16:23.75\00:16:25.91 Once the testator dies, you're not allowed to change it. 00:16:25.91\00:16:29.92 And that should make Christians very careful 00:16:29.92\00:16:32.15 before they decide that something in the Bible 00:16:32.15\00:16:34.06 no longer applies in the modern world. 00:16:34.06\00:16:36.89 Cultures change, yes, they do, 00:16:36.89\00:16:39.23 but the will of God does not. 00:16:39.23\00:16:41.00 And that brings me right back to the concept of covenants. 00:16:41.00\00:16:44.40 But there's something else that doesn't change, 00:16:44.40\00:16:46.40 and that's the clock on the wall here in the studio. 00:16:46.40\00:16:49.00 So, hang tight. 00:16:49.00\00:16:50.07 I'll be right back after this. 00:16:50.07\00:16:51.94 [mellow music] 00:16:51.94\00:16:55.01 [uplifting music] 00:16:55.01\00:16:56.71 - [Announcer] Life can throw a lot at us. 00:16:56.71\00:16:58.28 Sometimes, we don't have all the answers. 00:16:58.28\00:17:01.68 But that's where the Bible comes in. 00:17:01.68\00:17:04.12 It's our guide to a more fulfilling life. 00:17:04.12\00:17:06.39 Here at the Voice call 00:17:20.00\00:17:22.34 and start your journey of discovery. 00:17:22.34\00:17:25.04 - All right, just before the break, 00:17:25.04\00:17:26.31 I told you there was a clock on the wall. 00:17:26.31\00:17:27.81 And my crew called me a liar when we went to break 00:17:27.81\00:17:30.48 because it is not, in fact, on the wall. 00:17:30.48\00:17:32.65 It is standing on a stand near the wall. 00:17:32.65\00:17:35.75 All right, that aside, 00:17:35.75\00:17:37.19 many years ago, I was invited to visit this guy 00:17:37.19\00:17:39.52 because he was struggling to understand the Bible. 00:17:39.52\00:17:42.52 He'd been asking me about the role of the 10 Commandments 00:17:42.52\00:17:45.73 in the life of the Christian. 00:17:45.73\00:17:47.96 He'd been hearing from somebody that the 10 Commandments 00:17:47.96\00:17:50.63 no longer applied to believers after the cross of Christ, 00:17:50.63\00:17:53.94 and he found that kind of confusing, 00:17:53.94\00:17:56.44 because, after all, 00:17:56.44\00:17:57.61 the 10 Commandments appear to be 00:17:57.61\00:17:59.01 evergreen, universal principles. 00:17:59.01\00:18:01.68 If committing adultery or murdering was wrong 00:18:01.68\00:18:03.88 before the death of Christ, 00:18:03.88\00:18:05.48 surely, it's still wrong afterwards! 00:18:05.48\00:18:08.82 And that's true. 00:18:08.82\00:18:10.15 If you've got an unchanging God, 00:18:10.15\00:18:12.15 what he says is wrong is always going to be wrong, 00:18:12.15\00:18:15.02 because if you really examine what the Bible teaches, 00:18:15.02\00:18:18.36 you'll discover that the moral principles 00:18:18.36\00:18:20.40 espoused in those commandments 00:18:20.40\00:18:22.60 are really a description of God's own character. 00:18:22.60\00:18:25.87 When it tells you that murder is wrong, 00:18:25.87\00:18:28.50 what it's telling you is that God values life. 00:18:28.50\00:18:31.27 When it says that stealing is a sin, 00:18:31.27\00:18:33.51 it's a reminder that God values things 00:18:33.51\00:18:35.31 like honesty and personal dignity. 00:18:35.31\00:18:38.11 Those commandments are a picture of God himself. 00:18:38.11\00:18:42.22 But sometimes, we get confused, 00:18:42.22\00:18:44.32 because some modern Christians 00:18:44.32\00:18:46.65 have stopped reading the entire Bible. 00:18:46.65\00:18:49.42 Honestly, I think that's one of the worst problems 00:18:49.42\00:18:51.86 that Christendom has today. 00:18:51.86\00:18:53.46 We no longer read the entire document. 00:18:53.46\00:18:56.36 If you want a simple explanation for why we have 00:18:56.36\00:18:59.50 thousands of denominations in Christianity today 00:18:59.50\00:19:02.37 instead of the unified church that Jesus talked about, 00:19:02.37\00:19:05.84 well, that would be it. 00:19:05.84\00:19:07.38 We've adopted a buffet method to reading the scriptures. 00:19:07.38\00:19:10.61 It's like we're only reading the part of the will 00:19:10.61\00:19:12.35 that gives us dad's enormous bank account, 00:19:12.35\00:19:14.92 but we skip over the more uncomfortable parts, 00:19:14.92\00:19:17.02 like the fact that we've been made responsible 00:19:17.02\00:19:19.35 for the welfare of our siblings. 00:19:19.35\00:19:21.56 The passage my friend was curious about 00:19:22.69\00:19:24.23 came from the Book of Colossians. 00:19:24.23\00:19:25.89 I'll read this from the old King James Version 00:19:25.89\00:19:27.73 because that's where some of the confusion 00:19:27.73\00:19:29.93 actually comes from. 00:19:29.93\00:19:31.10 Here's what it says in Colossians 2: 00:19:31.10\00:19:34.37 And you being, dead in your sins 00:19:34.37\00:19:36.20 and the uncircumcision of your flesh, 00:19:36.20\00:19:38.27 hath he quickened together with him, 00:19:38.27\00:19:40.18 having forgiven you all trespasses, 00:19:40.18\00:19:42.84 blotting out the handwriting of ordinances 00:19:42.84\00:19:45.05 that was against us, 00:19:45.05\00:19:46.35 which was contrary to us, 00:19:46.35\00:19:48.15 and took it out of the way, 00:19:48.15\00:19:49.58 nailing it to his cross. 00:19:49.58\00:19:52.22 Now, over the course of the 20th century, 00:19:52.22\00:19:54.29 what some Christians did was read that out of context. 00:19:54.29\00:19:57.29 They brought a new interpretation to it. 00:19:57.29\00:19:59.66 What they did was proclaim 00:19:59.66\00:20:01.03 that we now live under grace instead of the law. 00:20:01.03\00:20:04.30 And they said that because of that, 00:20:04.30\00:20:07.10 the 10 Commandment moral law is now completely abolished. 00:20:07.10\00:20:10.41 To this day, you'll hear some people say, 00:20:10.41\00:20:12.51 "The 10 Commandments were nailed to the cross." 00:20:12.51\00:20:15.34 But that's not even close to what Paul's talking about. 00:20:15.34\00:20:18.65 Go back and read it again. 00:20:18.65\00:20:20.12 It never mentions the 10 Commandments at all. 00:20:20.12\00:20:24.32 What some people have done is take that phrase, 00:20:24.32\00:20:26.39 "The handwriting of ordinances that was against us," 00:20:26.39\00:20:29.62 and they've insisted that's talking 00:20:29.62\00:20:31.73 about the moral law of God. 00:20:31.73\00:20:33.90 But that would create a real problem 00:20:33.90\00:20:35.60 with the teachings of Christ, who said: 00:20:35.60\00:20:37.60 Until heaven and earth pass away, 00:20:37.60\00:20:39.60 not an iota, not a dot will pass from the law 00:20:39.60\00:20:42.94 until all is accomplished. 00:20:42.94\00:20:44.81 Therefore, whoever relaxes 00:20:44.81\00:20:46.21 one of the least of these commandments 00:20:46.21\00:20:47.98 and teaches others to do the same 00:20:47.98\00:20:49.81 will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. 00:20:49.81\00:20:52.41 Of course, you'll notice that he didn't point to the cross 00:20:53.95\00:20:56.55 as some kind of decisive moment 00:20:56.55\00:20:58.22 when the moral law would suddenly go away, 00:20:58.22\00:21:00.79 because that never happened. 00:21:00.79\00:21:02.26 So, how do we understand what it says in Colossians 2? 00:21:03.56\00:21:06.70 Well, there's a key concept in the original Greek language 00:21:06.70\00:21:09.46 that you can see in some modern translations, 00:21:09.46\00:21:12.47 and it's the word that's translated handwriting. 00:21:12.47\00:21:15.80 The Greek word is cheirographon, 00:21:15.80\00:21:17.74 which was an ancient bill of debt. 00:21:17.74\00:21:20.18 If you were a prisoner, for example, 00:21:20.18\00:21:21.94 there would be a document by your prison cell 00:21:21.94\00:21:23.91 spelling out your debt to society, 00:21:23.91\00:21:25.68 like, "Mike has three years in jail for stealing." 00:21:25.68\00:21:29.85 That's the judgment against you, the cheirographon. 00:21:29.85\00:21:32.92 And that's precisely what Jesus nailed to the cross, 00:21:32.92\00:21:36.16 your bill of debt. 00:21:36.16\00:21:37.96 He took what you owed, 00:21:37.96\00:21:39.59 your debt to the universe, 00:21:39.59\00:21:41.30 and nailed it to his cross. 00:21:41.30\00:21:43.63 He took your sentence on himself 00:21:43.63\00:21:45.43 and paid the penalty for you. 00:21:45.43\00:21:47.20 Now, let's read that passage again 00:21:47.20\00:21:48.90 in a more recent translation. 00:21:48.90\00:21:50.24 I think you'll see what it's actually saying: 00:21:50.24\00:21:53.21 And you who were dead in your trespasses 00:21:53.21\00:21:55.71 and the uncircumcision of your flesh, 00:21:55.71\00:21:57.85 God made alive together with him, 00:21:57.85\00:21:59.55 having forgiven us all our trespasses, 00:21:59.55\00:22:02.32 by canceling the record of debt 00:22:02.32\00:22:04.69 that stood against us with its legal demands. 00:22:04.69\00:22:07.52 This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 00:22:07.52\00:22:11.39 If a cop gives you a warning instead of a ticket, 00:22:12.66\00:22:15.20 that would be a pardon you didn't actually deserve. 00:22:15.20\00:22:18.17 But the fact that the cop let you skate on speeding 00:22:18.17\00:22:20.84 does not mean that the speed limit no longer applies to you. 00:22:20.84\00:22:24.04 In fact, it's exactly the opposite. 00:22:24.04\00:22:26.91 The act of forgiveness should make you more likely 00:22:26.91\00:22:29.61 to obey the law from that point forward. 00:22:29.61\00:22:32.35 God just doesn't change, 00:22:33.18\00:22:35.48 and neither do his moral standards. 00:22:35.48\00:22:37.62 To suggest otherwise 00:22:37.62\00:22:38.92 is to change the will and testament of Christ, 00:22:38.92\00:22:41.19 who never, ever taught that the moral law is abolished. 00:22:41.19\00:22:45.56 The man I was visiting had been told that the grace of God 00:22:45.56\00:22:48.30 releases us from the obligation to live by God's moral code, 00:22:48.30\00:22:51.77 because everything's been forgiven. 00:22:51.77\00:22:54.47 But that's not really what grace is, 00:22:54.47\00:22:56.81 not even close. 00:22:56.81\00:22:58.31 And that kind of thinking has made some Christians, 00:22:58.31\00:23:01.34 well, let's just say it's hard to see the difference 00:23:01.34\00:23:03.45 between those people and the rest of the world, 00:23:03.45\00:23:05.61 because they appear to cheat and steal like everybody else, 00:23:05.61\00:23:09.25 and sometimes worse. 00:23:09.25\00:23:11.02 That's not grace. 00:23:11.02\00:23:12.62 That's foolishness. 00:23:12.62\00:23:14.02 I'll be right back after this. 00:23:14.02\00:23:15.62 [mellow music] 00:23:45.52\00:23:49.02 - You know, there was a day in the not-too-distant past 00:23:49.02\00:23:51.76 when I really didn't have to spend much time 00:23:51.76\00:23:53.93 convincing people that there's such a thing 00:23:53.93\00:23:56.13 as a universal code of morality. 00:23:56.13\00:23:58.63 Go back through the writings of the ancient past, 00:23:58.63\00:24:01.04 go read the pagan philosophers, 00:24:01.04\00:24:03.61 read the Ancient Greek playwrights, 00:24:03.61\00:24:06.01 the great classics of European literature, 00:24:06.01\00:24:09.14 and you can't help but find it, 00:24:09.14\00:24:11.18 a universal acknowledgement 00:24:11.18\00:24:12.91 that there is a moral code that all of us must answer to. 00:24:12.91\00:24:17.52 There is something out there beyond us, 00:24:17.52\00:24:19.92 something that serves as an external reference point 00:24:19.92\00:24:23.02 for the human race, 00:24:23.02\00:24:24.49 a moral code that is higher than us. 00:24:24.49\00:24:28.00 The Greek philosophers might have called 00:24:28.00\00:24:29.70 that something out there the logos, 00:24:29.70\00:24:32.37 a universal principle that binds the universe together. 00:24:32.37\00:24:35.94 You'll find that word still conveniently located 00:24:35.94\00:24:38.87 in a lot of the terms we use 00:24:38.87\00:24:40.44 to describe the rational pursuit of ideas. 00:24:40.44\00:24:44.01 We talk about things like biology, 00:24:44.01\00:24:46.92 which is the systematic study of life, 00:24:46.92\00:24:48.92 or theology, which is the systematic study of God. 00:24:48.92\00:24:53.15 Those words are a tribute to the Greeks 00:24:53.15\00:24:55.09 who spoke of the logos. 00:24:55.09\00:24:57.16 Logos appears in those words. 00:24:57.16\00:25:00.66 And wouldn't you know it, it's fascinating. 00:25:00.66\00:25:02.76 The Apostle John also uses that word 00:25:02.76\00:25:05.30 in the opening words 00:25:05.30\00:25:06.70 of his remarkable account of the life of Christ, 00:25:06.70\00:25:09.30 which begins like this. 00:25:09.30\00:25:11.37 "In the beginning was the Word, 00:25:11.37\00:25:13.51 and the Word was with God, 00:25:13.51\00:25:15.24 and the Word was God. 00:25:15.24\00:25:16.98 He was in the beginning with God. 00:25:16.98\00:25:19.71 All things were made through him, 00:25:19.71\00:25:21.82 and without him was not anything made that was made." 00:25:21.82\00:25:26.89 Now, most of us know that as John is using that language, 00:25:28.29\00:25:30.16 he's actually talking about the Son of God. 00:25:30.16\00:25:33.13 And he reveals in those opening verses 00:25:33.13\00:25:35.46 that Christ is the one who, first of all, 00:25:35.46\00:25:38.03 created the world we live in, 00:25:38.03\00:25:40.14 and secondly, continues to keep it together. 00:25:40.14\00:25:43.64 Jesus turns out to be the universal principle, 00:25:43.64\00:25:47.31 the one to whom everything else owes its existence. 00:25:47.31\00:25:51.45 He's also the one who met Moses at the burning bush 00:25:51.45\00:25:54.62 and etched out a copy of his moral requirements 00:25:54.62\00:25:57.55 in tables of stone. 00:25:57.55\00:25:59.55 So, the moral law, 00:25:59.55\00:26:01.12 quite contrary to the teachings of some modern Christians, 00:26:01.12\00:26:05.06 is not in opposition to Christ. 00:26:05.06\00:26:07.73 We have it because of Christ. 00:26:07.73\00:26:10.70 Jesus Christ, the Bible tells us, 00:26:11.80\00:26:14.20 is the same yesterday and today and forever. 00:26:14.20\00:26:18.64 That's why you will never find a statement from Christ 00:26:18.64\00:26:22.41 abrogating the moral standards of God. 00:26:22.41\00:26:24.61 You will never find a Bible verse where Jesus, 00:26:24.61\00:26:27.45 "You know that 10 Commandment moral law? 00:26:27.45\00:26:30.19 Done, that's gone. 00:26:30.19\00:26:31.25 Don't even think about it." 00:26:31.25\00:26:33.22 If that was even possible, 00:26:33.22\00:26:35.42 wouldn't it have been easier to just change the law 00:26:35.42\00:26:37.46 than die for us? 00:26:37.46\00:26:39.39 But the law can't be changed 00:26:39.39\00:26:41.16 because it's actually a portrait of who Christ is. 00:26:41.16\00:26:45.00 The gospel is not the story of changing standards. 00:26:45.00\00:26:49.64 It's the story of changing hearts. 00:26:49.64\00:26:52.07 It's the story of forgiveness. 00:26:52.07\00:26:53.91 It's the story of restoration. 00:26:53.91\00:26:56.04 It's the story of a God who doesn't change, changing us. 00:26:56.04\00:27:00.32 And that is the will and testament of Christ, 00:27:00.32\00:27:03.65 to let the world know that he's made it possible 00:27:03.65\00:27:05.79 to come back home 00:27:05.79\00:27:07.26 without ever having to compromise who he actually is. 00:27:07.26\00:27:11.73 Now, you have the responsibility to go out there 00:27:11.73\00:27:15.20 and be a faithful executor 00:27:15.20\00:27:17.13 of the last will and testament of Christ.
