Well hello, welcome to the last session 00:00:15.71\00:00:19.58 of Anchor Bible school. 00:00:19.61\00:00:21.05 It's good to see you all nice and dressed up. 00:00:21.08\00:00:23.65 And we have an exciting study in the next several minutes. 00:00:24.05\00:00:27.46 But we want to have a word of prayer to ask for 00:00:27.49\00:00:29.46 God's guidance, first of all. 00:00:29.49\00:00:31.09 And so let's just bow our heads for a word of prayer. 00:00:31.29\00:00:33.53 Father in heaven, we thank You for the privilege of 00:00:33.86\00:00:35.93 being here this afternoon. 00:00:35.96\00:00:37.47 We thank You because we are able to study this magnificent 00:00:37.90\00:00:41.04 prophecy of Daniel 11:40-45. 00:00:41.07\00:00:43.91 We ask for the guidance of Your Holy Spirit 00:00:44.37\00:00:46.68 that You might give us understanding of this 00:00:46.98\00:00:49.91 complex passage. 00:00:49.94\00:00:51.48 And we thank You for hearing our prayer. 00:00:51.51\00:00:53.48 We ask it in Jesus' name, amen. 00:00:53.52\00:00:56.52 Now basically we're discussing how we can discover 00:00:57.59\00:01:01.92 Ellen White's comments on any given text or passage 00:01:02.26\00:01:05.76 without her quoting it or even alluding to the language. 00:01:06.06\00:01:10.97 Daniel 11 is a good example of how to do it. 00:01:11.33\00:01:15.24 So we're going to follow the material that you have 00:01:15.47\00:01:18.27 before you, line by line, precept by precept, 00:01:18.31\00:01:21.94 here a little, there a little. 00:01:21.98\00:01:23.35 And hopefully we'll be able to cover it within the 00:01:23.55\00:01:25.81 time constraints that we have. 00:01:25.85\00:01:27.85 There is a passage in the book of Daniel 00:01:28.48\00:01:30.82 which has always been a subject of lively discussion 00:01:31.42\00:01:35.39 among Seventh-day Adventist theologians. 00:01:36.26\00:01:39.49 And that passage is Daniel 11:40-45. 00:01:39.89\00:01:43.30 Until recently, most of the Adventist scholars agreed 00:01:43.97\00:01:48.60 that the king of the north represents the papacy 00:01:49.00\00:01:53.07 and the king of the south represents 00:01:53.51\00:01:55.81 atheism or secularism. 00:01:55.91\00:01:59.28 But now a new view has appeared on the horizon 00:01:59.98\00:02:03.89 that sees radical Islam as playing a significant role 00:02:04.45\00:02:09.72 in the fulfillment of this specific prophecy. 00:02:09.76\00:02:13.29 Those who have embraced this view have concluded 00:02:14.06\00:02:17.83 that the events of 9/11 and the war against Al Qaeda 00:02:17.87\00:02:23.34 are so significant that they must be contemplated 00:02:23.77\00:02:27.68 somewhere in Bible prophecy. 00:02:27.71\00:02:30.28 This has sparked a new interest in the study of the 00:02:30.95\00:02:34.45 fifth and sixth trumpets in conjunction with 00:02:34.48\00:02:37.69 Daniel 11 verses 40 to 45. 00:02:37.72\00:02:41.32 Now usually Ellen White has provided invaluable 00:02:42.06\00:02:45.63 guidance in the interpretation of difficult prophetic passages. 00:02:45.66\00:02:50.70 But unlike other passages in the book of Daniel, 00:02:51.23\00:02:54.90 Ellen White seems to be silent on these specific verses. 00:02:55.37\00:03:01.61 Especially verses 40 to 45. 00:03:02.24\00:03:04.68 Nowhere to my knowledge does she ever quote verses 40 to 45, 00:03:05.15\00:03:11.32 nor does she echo the terminology that is used 00:03:11.69\00:03:15.99 in these verses. 00:03:16.42\00:03:17.86 This seeming silence has provided individuals 00:03:18.56\00:03:24.03 with the idea that Ellen White had nothing to say 00:03:24.07\00:03:27.94 about these specific verses. 00:03:27.97\00:03:30.51 We therefore ask, did Ellen White have anything to say 00:03:31.01\00:03:35.91 about the meaning of these verses, or does her apparent 00:03:35.94\00:03:41.02 silence indicate that their meaning would remain a mystery 00:03:41.05\00:03:46.02 until long after her death? 00:03:46.05\00:03:48.52 In this article, or this study, we will seek to answer 00:03:49.12\00:03:54.36 this question. 00:03:54.40\00:03:55.86 Now let's discuss, first of all, Ellen White's use of Daniel 11. 00:03:56.56\00:04:01.74 To my knowledge, there are only three primary Ellen G. White 00:04:02.27\00:04:07.34 reference to Daniel 11, except for one that is found 00:04:07.38\00:04:11.78 in the little booklet, 00:04:11.81\00:04:13.15 A Word to the Little Flock Scattered Abroad, 00:04:13.18\00:04:15.92 to which I'm going to make reference later in this study. 00:04:16.28\00:04:20.26 One of these three primary references is general 00:04:20.96\00:04:26.26 in nature and indirect. 00:04:26.29\00:04:28.10 Excuse me, one is indirect. 00:04:29.53\00:04:31.33 The other is general. 00:04:31.70\00:04:33.20 And the other is quite specific. 00:04:33.87\00:04:37.11 Only in the specific reference, once in her writings, 00:04:37.81\00:04:41.81 does Ellen White actually quote any verses from the chapter. 00:04:42.14\00:04:47.12 And those verses that she quotes are verses 30 to 36. 00:04:47.28\00:04:51.85 Unfortunately, as stated before, she never quotes, 00:04:52.25\00:04:57.66 nor does she even allude to the language, 00:04:57.99\00:05:01.06 of verses 40 to 45. 00:05:01.10\00:05:03.26 So it would seem well nigh impossible to discover 00:05:03.57\00:05:08.20 how Ellen White understood these verses. 00:05:08.24\00:05:11.04 Now let's take a look at these three specific quotations. 00:05:11.77\00:05:17.18 As I mentioned, one of them is indirect, 00:05:17.21\00:05:20.12 another one is very general, and the third is more specific. 00:05:20.32\00:05:24.65 And she actually quotes verses in that one. 00:05:24.69\00:05:27.86 The first quotation is indirect, because she does not 00:05:28.79\00:05:33.03 specifically mention Daniel 11 but only alludes to it. 00:05:33.06\00:05:39.07 And I'm going to show you in what sense she alludes 00:05:40.47\00:05:44.74 to Daniel 11 without actually mentioning Daniel 11. 00:05:44.77\00:05:49.04 In 1896, Ellen White wrote the following words, 00:05:49.84\00:05:55.22 "The light that Daniel received from God was given especially 00:05:55.68\00:06:01.09 for these last days. 00:06:01.12\00:06:02.92 The visions he saw by the banks of the Ulai..." 00:06:03.26\00:06:07.00 And I put in brackets there, Daniel 8 verse 2. 00:06:08.50\00:06:11.50 In other words, Daniel 8 was given next to the Ulai. 00:06:11.53\00:06:14.40 "...and the Hiddekel..." 00:06:15.04\00:06:17.04 The vision that was given by the Hiddekel was Daniel 10 verse 4 00:06:17.84\00:06:21.38 and chapter 11. 00:06:21.41\00:06:22.74 "...the great rivers of Shinar, are now in process 00:06:24.08\00:06:28.22 of fulfillment, and all the events foretold will soon 00:06:28.25\00:06:33.49 come to pass." 00:06:33.52\00:06:35.32 Now the second quotation is found in, 00:06:36.76\00:06:41.36 Testimonies volume 9, and it was written in 1909. 00:06:41.90\00:06:48.50 And if you're going to the next page, 00:06:49.20\00:06:50.91 we find the quotation there. 00:06:50.94\00:06:52.87 Here, Ellen White states, "The world is stirred 00:06:53.78\00:06:56.54 with the spirit of war. 00:06:56.58\00:06:58.21 The prophecy of the eleventh chapter of Daniel 00:06:58.78\00:07:02.35 has nearly reached its complete fulfillment. 00:07:02.88\00:07:06.09 Soon the scenes of trouble spoken of in the 00:07:06.49\00:07:09.16 prophecies will take place." 00:07:09.19\00:07:11.79 So in 1896, she wrote that the visions that Daniel received 00:07:12.36\00:07:18.83 by the Ulai, that's Daniel 8, and the Hiddekel, 00:07:18.87\00:07:22.17 Daniel 10 through chapter 11, the great rivers of Shinar, 00:07:22.34\00:07:27.84 were in the process of fulfillment. 00:07:27.88\00:07:29.54 And she says the events would soon come to pass. 00:07:29.58\00:07:32.11 And in the second statements, she actually mentions 00:07:32.51\00:07:35.55 the 11th of Daniel, but she doesn't quote any verses. 00:07:35.58\00:07:38.45 And she says that it has nearly reached 00:07:38.52\00:07:40.46 its complete fulfillment. 00:07:40.49\00:07:42.12 Now there's another quotation. 00:07:42.62\00:07:44.26 And this one was written in 1904. 00:07:44.29\00:07:47.30 It is the only quotation where Ellen White actually quotes 00:07:47.90\00:07:51.40 verses from Daniel 11. 00:07:51.43\00:07:53.74 As I mentioned before, she quotes verses 30-36. 00:07:53.97\00:07:58.44 And now I read that specific statement found in, 00:07:58.71\00:08:01.68 Manuscript Releases, volume 13, page 394. 00:08:01.71\00:08:07.38 She says, "We have no time to lose. 00:08:08.05\00:08:10.45 Troublous times are before us. 00:08:10.85\00:08:13.36 The world is stirred with the spirit of war. 00:08:13.69\00:08:16.52 Soon the scenes of trouble spoken of in the 00:08:16.89\00:08:20.60 prophecies will take place. 00:08:20.63\00:08:22.50 The prophecy in the eleventh of Daniel has nearly 00:08:22.76\00:08:26.94 reached its complete fulfillment." 00:08:26.97\00:08:29.67 And then she says this, "Much of the history 00:08:30.41\00:08:33.68 that has taken place in fulfillment of this prophecy 00:08:34.01\00:08:37.38 will be repeated. 00:08:37.41\00:08:39.08 In the thirtieth verse a power is spoken of 00:08:39.28\00:08:42.45 that 'shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation 00:08:43.08\00:08:47.26 against the holy covenant: so shall he do; 00:08:47.29\00:08:50.66 he shall even return, and have intelligence 00:08:50.86\00:08:53.46 with them that forsake the holy covenant.'" 00:08:53.50\00:08:56.10 And then she quotes verses 31 to 36. 00:08:56.13\00:08:59.50 And she ends by saying, "Scenes similar to those 00:08:59.97\00:09:04.01 described in these words will take place." 00:09:04.04\00:09:07.84 Those are the only three quotations from the writings 00:09:08.51\00:09:11.68 of Ellen White where she either alludes to Daniel 11, 00:09:11.71\00:09:16.69 refers in general terms to Daniel 11, 00:09:16.99\00:09:19.85 and actually quotes verses from Daniel 11. 00:09:20.22\00:09:23.96 Now we need to analyze these statements 00:09:24.43\00:09:28.23 to find out what we can glean from them, 00:09:28.46\00:09:30.70 what information is valuable in determining her concept 00:09:30.73\00:09:34.74 of Daniel 11. 00:09:34.77\00:09:36.87 Now let's examine, first of all, the quotation from, 00:09:37.61\00:09:40.28 Testimonies to Ministers, page 112, the first one 00:09:40.31\00:09:44.61 that was written in 1896. 00:09:44.65\00:09:47.15 This statement has two key items of information. 00:09:47.55\00:09:50.92 First, the prophecies of Daniel 8 and 11 00:09:51.45\00:09:55.72 run concurrently and are parallel. 00:09:56.02\00:09:59.23 Is that point clear? 00:10:00.43\00:10:01.83 The prophecy by the Ulai was the one given in chapter 8. 00:10:02.33\00:10:07.50 And the one by the Hiddekel was the one given 00:10:08.04\00:10:11.77 in chapters 10 and 11. 00:10:11.81\00:10:14.11 And so basically, by saying that these prophecies 00:10:14.44\00:10:18.05 are in the process of fulfillment, 00:10:18.35\00:10:20.55 and soon what is prophesied will take place, 00:10:20.58\00:10:23.35 she's saying that Daniel 8 and Daniel 11 are parallel. 00:10:23.55\00:10:27.46 And we already studied that in one of our previous classes. 00:10:28.56\00:10:31.19 Remember that you have this book within the book. 00:10:31.23\00:10:34.66 And it begins with Persia in chapter 8, 00:10:34.93\00:10:36.97 and then chapter 11 begins with Persia also. 00:10:37.00\00:10:39.30 And they work their way through. 00:10:39.33\00:10:40.70 So what I want us to notice then is the prophecies of 00:10:41.14\00:10:45.01 Daniel 8 and 11, or 10 and 11, are parallel. 00:10:45.04\00:10:49.31 The second point that we need to take into account 00:10:49.58\00:10:52.31 is that both of these prophecies were in the process of 00:10:52.51\00:10:55.58 fulfillment when Ellen White wrote in 1896. 00:10:55.62\00:10:59.29 Unfortunately, in this statement, Ellen White 00:10:59.85\00:11:03.29 does not specify how much of the chapter had already 00:11:03.32\00:11:07.10 been fulfilled when she wrote the statement. 00:11:07.13\00:11:09.66 Correct? 00:11:09.70\00:11:11.03 She simply says that Daniel 8 and Daniel 11 00:11:11.07\00:11:13.97 were in the process of fulfillment. 00:11:14.30\00:11:16.07 But she doesn't say where the fulfillment was. 00:11:16.10\00:11:18.84 The beginning of the chapter, the middle of the chapter, 00:11:18.87\00:11:20.94 or the end of the chapter. 00:11:21.04\00:11:22.51 She merely stated that these prophecies were in the 00:11:22.68\00:11:25.48 process of fulfillment. 00:11:25.51\00:11:26.98 So we would be interested in knowing where the process was. 00:11:27.18\00:11:30.39 Now the quotation in, Testimonies for the Church, 00:11:31.39\00:11:34.29 volume 9, page 14, adds some very valuable information. 00:11:34.32\00:11:39.53 When Ellen White wrote this testimony in 1909, 00:11:40.00\00:11:43.43 she stated that the prophecy of Daniel 11, 00:11:43.67\00:11:46.33 this is the important detail, had nearly reached 00:11:46.37\00:11:49.54 its complete fulfillment. 00:11:49.57\00:11:51.11 So do we know from this statement where the 00:11:51.57\00:11:54.01 prophecy was in its fulfillment? 00:11:54.04\00:11:56.48 Yes, it was towards the what? 00:11:56.51\00:11:58.85 Towards the end of Daniel 11. 00:11:59.05\00:12:01.18 So the quotation in, Testimonies for the Church, 00:12:01.72\00:12:05.32 volume 9, page 14, adds some very valuable information. 00:12:05.35\00:12:08.79 When Ellen White wrote this testimony in 1909, 00:12:09.19\00:12:12.49 she stated that the prophecy of Daniel 11 had nearly 00:12:12.53\00:12:15.50 reached its complete fulfillment. 00:12:15.53\00:12:17.33 Thus, we can be certain that in 1909 the process of fulfillment 00:12:17.63\00:12:23.37 of Daniel 11 was in the last few verses of the chapter. 00:12:23.41\00:12:27.68 Is that point clear? 00:12:27.71\00:12:29.08 Now the third quotation, the one from, Manuscript Releases, 00:12:29.68\00:12:34.78 volume 13, and page 394, written in 1904, 00:12:34.82\00:12:39.55 contains some significant information 00:12:39.75\00:12:42.56 that is not found in the other two quotations. 00:12:42.76\00:12:45.79 In this statement, Ellen White explains that much of the 00:12:46.36\00:12:50.90 history that had taken place in fulfillment of this chapter 00:12:50.93\00:12:55.70 will be repeated. 00:12:55.74\00:12:57.07 The critical question then is this, 00:12:57.61\00:12:59.91 which history was she referring to that would be repeated? 00:13:00.34\00:13:03.95 Fortunately, we don't have to guess. 00:13:04.65\00:13:06.75 Because she immediately quotes verses 30 to 36. 00:13:07.42\00:13:11.55 Then right after she quotes these verses, 00:13:11.95\00:13:15.12 she again repeats the thought that much of the history 00:13:15.32\00:13:19.19 that has occurred in fulfillment of these verses will be 00:13:19.23\00:13:24.57 repeated, when she says, "Scenes similar to those 00:13:24.60\00:13:28.44 described in these words will take place." 00:13:28.47\00:13:31.24 Are you understanding that point? 00:13:31.27\00:13:32.97 Very, very important. 00:13:33.34\00:13:34.68 In other words, she says, "Much of the history that has 00:13:34.71\00:13:37.21 fulfilled this chapter will be repeated." 00:13:37.25\00:13:41.02 Then what does she quote? 00:13:41.48\00:13:42.92 Verses 30 to 36. 00:13:43.18\00:13:45.02 And after quoting verses 30 to 36, then she says, 00:13:45.19\00:13:48.92 "Scenes similar to those described in these words 00:13:48.96\00:13:52.36 will take place." 00:13:52.39\00:13:53.73 So which are the events that already took place 00:13:54.00\00:13:57.23 that were fulfilled? 00:13:57.27\00:13:58.60 The events in verses 30 to 36. 00:13:58.87\00:14:01.30 And in the future, we're going to find that scenes similar 00:14:01.64\00:14:05.81 to the ones in verses 30 to 36 will take place. 00:14:05.84\00:14:10.21 Clearly, Ellen White understood that verses 30 to 36, 00:14:10.55\00:14:15.68 and I might say also verses 37 to 39 00:14:15.88\00:14:19.25 even though she does not quote them, 00:14:19.29\00:14:20.96 had already been fulfilled in the past when she wrote. 00:14:21.16\00:14:24.73 Is that clear? 00:14:25.09\00:14:26.43 They had already been fulfilled. 00:14:26.59\00:14:27.93 She says, you know, they'll be scenes similar to these. 00:14:27.96\00:14:31.33 Now if verses 30 to 39 had already been fulfilled 00:14:32.97\00:14:36.07 in the past, then the similar future scenes 00:14:36.10\00:14:40.14 must be described where? 00:14:40.44\00:14:42.41 In verses 40 to 45. 00:14:42.98\00:14:44.91 Thus, verses 30 to 39 describe events in the past 00:14:45.45\00:14:50.15 while verses 40 to 45 describe events in the future. 00:14:50.32\00:14:55.42 Is that clear to you? 00:14:55.96\00:14:57.29 Not real clear. 00:14:58.89\00:15:00.26 Well let me go over it again, because this is a 00:15:01.06\00:15:03.60 very important point. 00:15:03.63\00:15:05.00 Let's go again to this paragraph. 00:15:06.37\00:15:08.64 Ellen White understood that verses 30 to 36, 00:15:09.70\00:15:12.81 and also 37 to 39, had already been fulfilled 00:15:12.84\00:15:17.01 in the past when she wrote. 00:15:17.05\00:15:18.38 Is that point clear? 00:15:18.41\00:15:19.75 If verses 30 to 39 had already been fulfilled in the past, 00:15:21.18\00:15:25.55 then the similar scenes that she said would be fulfilled 00:15:26.42\00:15:29.99 in the future must be verses 40 to 45. 00:15:30.03\00:15:33.16 Because if 30 to 39 were fulfilled, and there's 00:15:34.76\00:15:38.70 going to be future scenes similar to those, 00:15:38.73\00:15:41.24 then the only place you can look is verses 40 to 45. 00:15:41.67\00:15:45.57 Is that point clear? 00:15:45.61\00:15:46.94 It is important to realize that Ellen White, 00:15:47.41\00:15:50.58 this is vitally important, Ellen White is not saying 00:15:50.61\00:15:53.62 that these verses have a dual fulfillment. 00:15:53.75\00:15:56.28 She's not saying that verses 30 to 39 00:15:56.89\00:15:59.09 are going to be fulfilled twice, 00:15:59.12\00:16:00.79 once in the past and one in the future. 00:16:01.76\00:16:04.29 What she is saying is that much of the history 00:16:04.66\00:16:08.86 that fulfilled these verses will be repeated. 00:16:09.36\00:16:12.60 Stated another way, it is not the prophecy in verses 30 to 39 00:16:13.80\00:16:18.87 that will be fulfilled once again, but rather 00:16:19.07\00:16:21.74 much of the history which fulfilled the prophecy 00:16:21.78\00:16:24.55 in the past that will be repeated in similar fashion 00:16:24.58\00:16:27.78 in the future. 00:16:27.82\00:16:29.15 Is it different to say that the prophecy will be fulfilled twice 00:16:29.18\00:16:31.92 than to say that much of the history will be fulfilled twice? 00:16:32.12\00:16:35.42 It's very, very different. 00:16:35.66\00:16:36.99 These verses don't have a double fulfillment. 00:16:37.29\00:16:40.36 It's just that they were fulfilled in the past, 00:16:40.73\00:16:42.93 and in the future there are going to be scenes similar 00:16:42.96\00:16:45.93 to the ones that were already fulfilled in the past. 00:16:45.97\00:16:48.47 Now let's notice, let's pursue this. 00:16:49.04\00:16:51.64 At this juncture in our study, we must ask, 00:16:52.47\00:16:56.18 why will the historical scenes of the past repeat once again 00:16:56.48\00:17:01.32 in similar fashion? 00:17:01.98\00:17:03.55 The answer is not hard to find. 00:17:03.89\00:17:05.95 The arrogant and persecuting power that is described 00:17:06.45\00:17:09.49 in verses 30 to 39 is the Roman Catholic Papacy 00:17:09.52\00:17:13.90 as it behaved during the 1260 year career. 00:17:14.46\00:17:18.90 During this period, it joined church and state 00:17:19.57\00:17:22.30 and used the sword of the state to persecute dissenters. 00:17:22.50\00:17:26.41 So in other words, verses 30 to 39 00:17:26.44\00:17:28.64 are speaking about the career of the papacy 00:17:28.84\00:17:31.38 during the 1260 years. 00:17:31.41\00:17:33.38 As is well known, at the end of the 1260 years 00:17:33.98\00:17:38.39 the papacy received the deadly wound 00:17:38.42\00:17:40.89 when the state turned against it at the conclusion 00:17:41.19\00:17:44.73 of the French Revolution. 00:17:44.76\00:17:46.29 But this was not the end of the papacy's career, was it? 00:17:46.56\00:17:49.90 Prophecy predicts that after a period of convalescence 00:17:50.97\00:17:55.14 the deadly wound will be healed when the United States will 00:17:55.17\00:17:59.27 return the sword of the civil power into the papacy's hand. 00:17:59.31\00:18:04.11 Then the papacy will behave once more as it did in the past. 00:18:04.35\00:18:09.55 Thus the history of the past papal oppression 00:18:09.58\00:18:13.19 will be repeated in the future because the papacy 00:18:13.22\00:18:16.52 will rise once again in power. 00:18:16.56\00:18:19.03 Are you following me? 00:18:19.06\00:18:20.40 Now in summary, Ellen White believed that Daniel 11:30-36, 00:18:21.06\00:18:26.74 and that includes verses 30 to 39, 00:18:27.07\00:18:29.37 was fulfilled in the past. 00:18:29.40\00:18:31.64 Though she does not specifically quote verses 37 to 39, 00:18:32.14\00:18:35.54 when you study them carefully, it's part of the 00:18:35.58\00:18:37.55 career of the papacy. 00:18:37.58\00:18:39.28 She also believed that much of the history 00:18:39.48\00:18:42.22 described in these verses would be repeated in similar fashion 00:18:42.25\00:18:47.06 in the future. 00:18:47.09\00:18:48.42 Now if verses 30 to 39 had already been fulfilled 00:18:48.56\00:18:52.39 in the past in Ellen White's day, then the future 00:18:52.43\00:18:55.93 repetition of the history of these verses 00:18:55.96\00:18:58.13 must be found where? 00:18:58.17\00:18:59.83 In verses 40 to 45. 00:19:01.07\00:19:03.10 Notice the following three quotations on the 00:19:03.81\00:19:07.61 past and future role of the papacy. 00:19:07.64\00:19:10.41 Very interesting. 00:19:11.35\00:19:12.68 "The influence of Rome in the countries that once 00:19:13.45\00:19:16.58 acknowledged her dominion is far from being destroyed. 00:19:16.62\00:19:21.26 And prophecy foretells a restoration of her power. 00:19:21.82\00:19:26.03 'I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; What? 00:29:18.99\00:29:21.02 "...the deliverance of those who have patiently waited 00:29:21.26\00:29:24.53 for his coming, whose names are written in the book of life." 00:29:24.56\00:29:28.20 You see, we're working backwards? 00:29:29.16\00:29:30.80 Now, where would you expect to find phrase number two? 00:29:31.27\00:29:35.14 Earlier in, Great Controversy, right? 00:29:35.40\00:29:37.77 Now let's notice, Great Controversy, page 616. 00:29:38.51\00:29:41.78 Ellen White describes the second item on the list 00:29:42.84\00:29:46.31 by explaining the time of trouble through which 00:29:46.35\00:29:48.95 God's people will go. 00:29:48.98\00:29:50.39 In fact, on page 616, she says, "The people of God 00:29:50.99\00:29:55.32 will then be plunged into those scenes of affliction 00:29:55.36\00:29:58.93 and distress described by the prophet as..." 00:37:35.22\00:37:36.79 There's some certain tidings that come from the north 00:37:37.22\00:37:39.49 and from the east that infuriate him. 00:37:39.52\00:37:41.79 Now, what is this news from the east and the north 00:37:42.56\00:37:46.39 that so infuriates the king of the north that he seeks 00:37:47.03\00:37:50.03 to destroy many? 00:37:50.07\00:37:51.40 We must to go the book of Revelation 00:37:51.50\00:37:54.07 for the answer, because we are told that the book of Daniel 00:37:54.70\00:37:58.21 is unsealed by the book of Revelation. 00:37:58.24\00:38:00.64 In fact, Ellen White says in, Christ Triumphant, page 344, 00:38:01.01\00:38:04.41 "The books of Daniel and the Revelation are one. 00:38:04.75\00:38:07.82 One is a prophecy, the other a revelation; 00:38:08.12\00:38:10.85 one a book sealed, and the other a book opened." 00:38:11.15\00:38:16.89 Now listen carefully. 00:38:17.69\00:38:19.19 Revelation 7 verse 2 describes an angel who ascends 00:38:19.83\00:38:23.26 from the east having the seal of the living God. 00:38:23.30\00:38:27.90 What is the seal of the living God? the angel that comes from the east, 00:42:04.09\00:42:07.49 is equivalent to tidings from the east, 00:42:07.79\00:42:09.82 and the message of the loud cry that comes from 00:42:09.86\00:42:13.06 heaven, from the north, is the tidings from the north. 00:42:13.09\00:42:17.70 Now let's continue. 00:42:17.73\00:42:19.07 Thus, the news from the north is identified in 00:42:19.17\00:42:22.27 Revelation 18 as the loud cry of the angel who 00:42:22.30\00:42:25.21 descends from heaven, from the north. 00:42:25.24\00:42:27.38 And the news from the east is the message concerning the 11:40-45. 00:42:59.41\00:43:01.64 See, we've only dealt with some of the events. 00:43:01.68\00:43:04.38 I'm not going to go through all of the other events 00:43:04.41\00:43:06.61 that take us all the way to verse 40. 00:43:06.65\00:43:08.45 But you have the principle now, right? 00:43:08.58\00:43:11.22 You know now that you can work backwards. 00:43:11.25\00:43:13.76 So where would you expect to find Ellen White's comments 00:43:13.99\00:43:16.99 about what comes before verse 44 of chapter 11? 00:43:17.09\00:43:21.66 Well you have to go earlier, don't you. 00:43:21.70\00:43:23.87 Now, we have focused in this article, or this lecture, 00:43:24.33\00:43:28.14 primarily on the events from Daniel 11:44 to Daniel 12:2. 00:43:28.17\00:43:33.07 But if we continued moving backwards in, 00:43:33.38\00:43:35.74 The Great Controversy, before page 603, 00:43:35.78\00:43:38.78 we would find in reverse order that Ellen White expounds 00:43:39.05\00:43:42.85 upon each phrase of Daniel 11:40-45 00:43:42.88\00:43:46.42 ending with the chapter on the Bible and the French Revolution 00:43:46.62\00:43:50.43 where the deadly wound of Daniel 11:40a is described. 00:43:50.63\00:43:55.86 That's pages 265-288. 00:43:55.90\00:43:58.90 Though she does not employ the terminology of verses 40-45, 00:43:59.13\00:44:03.27 the sequence of events clearly reveals 00:44:03.30\00:44:06.84 that she is discussing these verses. 00:44:06.88\00:44:09.54 In Daniel 11:40a, we are told that the king of the south 00:44:10.01\00:44:14.58 would push at the king of the north 00:44:14.68\00:44:16.99 at the time of the end. 00:44:17.32\00:44:18.82 Ellen White clearly identifies the beginning of the 00:44:19.29\00:44:22.02 time of the end as the year 1798 when France 00:44:22.06\00:44:26.26 dealt the papacy its deadly wound. 00:44:26.36\00:44:28.86 So where does Daniel 11 verse 40 begin? 00:44:29.33\00:44:33.64 It begins with the French Revolution. 00:44:34.37\00:44:36.60 And it begins in, Great Controversy, page 356. 00:44:36.87\00:44:40.34 The word, "push," does not adequately portray 00:44:40.58\00:44:44.21 the idea of the text. 00:44:44.25\00:44:45.88 The historical event that is described by this word 00:44:46.18\00:44:49.42 was not a friendly nudge or a shove. 00:44:49.62\00:44:52.59 The NIV translates, "will engage him in battle," 00:44:52.92\00:44:57.83 while the ESV translates, "shall attack him." 00:44:58.53\00:45:01.90 That is, in the year 1798, some power described as 00:45:02.36\00:45:06.74 the king of the south would attack the king of the north. 00:45:06.77\00:45:10.24 So where do you begin in, The Great Controversy, 00:45:10.41\00:45:13.38 the study of verse 40? 00:45:13.41\00:45:16.38 You begin where she comments on the French Revolution, page 356. 00:45:16.61\00:45:21.18 And so, as you continue studying after page 356, 00:45:21.72\00:45:25.42 you're going to discover all of the events 00:45:25.45\00:45:27.66 between verse 40 and verse 44. 00:45:27.69\00:45:30.79 Now let's continue here. 00:45:31.66\00:45:33.23 There is a wide consensus among students of prophecy 00:45:33.93\00:45:37.17 in the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:45:37.20\00:45:38.87 that the king of the north represents the papacy. 00:45:39.23\00:45:41.80 And until recently, there was a broad consensus that 00:45:42.27\00:45:45.91 the king of the south represents secularism 00:45:45.94\00:45:49.14 as it is manifested in the French Revolution. 00:45:49.18\00:45:52.08 But times have changed. 00:45:52.35\00:45:54.22 And some Adventist preachers, as they look at current events, 00:45:54.32\00:45:58.19 are re-interpreting the king of the south 00:45:58.22\00:46:00.32 as a symbol of militant Islam. 00:46:00.36\00:46:03.32 Literally and geographically speaking, the king of the 00:46:04.13\00:46:07.90 south was Egypt. 00:46:07.93\00:46:09.26 Because Egypt was the kingdom that was south of Israel. 00:46:09.83\00:46:12.67 But in the end time, we are not dealing with literal 00:46:13.13\00:46:15.87 geographical locations, but rather with global systems. 00:46:15.90\00:46:19.54 We've studied that. 00:46:19.57\00:46:20.91 Who is the king of the south, spiritually speaking. 00:46:21.01\00:46:24.51 I believe that Revelation 11, which is linked with the 00:46:25.35\00:46:28.58 fifth and sixth trumpets, by the way, 00:46:28.62\00:46:30.19 clearly identifies France as spiritual Egypt. 00:46:30.39\00:46:33.96 While Babylon represents a global apostate 00:46:34.49\00:46:37.36 religious system, Egypt symbolizes the secular powers 00:46:37.39\00:46:41.76 of the world that threw off the yoke of papal Rome 00:46:41.80\00:46:45.17 beginning with France. 00:46:45.20\00:46:46.74 Revelation 17 explains that for a very short while 00:46:47.24\00:46:51.31 at the end of time, the secular powers of the world 00:46:51.34\00:46:54.81 will once again join together in unholy wedlock 00:46:55.18\00:46:58.45 with the harlot. 00:46:58.48\00:46:59.91 But in the end, the kings of the earth will hate the 00:47:00.15\00:47:04.32 Babylonian harlot and destroy her. 00:47:04.35\00:47:07.52 Babylon was the literal and geographical 00:47:08.09\00:47:14.26 king of the north in biblical times, 00:47:14.30\00:47:16.56 because it was the enemy that invaded literal Israel 00:47:16.60\00:47:19.40 from the literal north. 00:47:19.43\00:47:20.80 But today, the king of the north is a global spiritual system 00:47:21.04\00:47:25.04 of counterfeit religion, the Roman Catholic Papacy. 00:47:25.07\00:47:28.04 The papacy is certainly not literally 00:47:28.48\00:47:30.65 north of literal Israel. 00:47:30.68\00:47:32.01 Actually, it is west. 00:47:32.05\00:47:33.75 We must therefore interpret the king of the north 00:47:34.02\00:47:36.85 and the king of the south symbolically. 00:47:36.99\00:47:39.95 And what was the main characteristic 00:47:40.46\00:47:42.56 of France in 1798? 00:47:42.59\00:47:44.29 Why is France called Egypt? 00:47:44.33\00:47:45.99 The spirit of the French Revolution was atheism. 00:47:46.43\00:47:49.53 But actually, Daniel 11:40a involves far more than atheism. 00:47:50.67\00:47:55.57 The genius of the French Revolution 00:47:55.80\00:47:57.97 culminating with the captivity of Pope Pious VI 00:47:58.17\00:48:01.54 was to secularize the government and separate it 00:48:01.58\00:48:05.01 from its adulterous relationship with the church. 00:48:05.11\00:48:07.82 In the course of several decades after the French Revolution, 00:48:08.22\00:48:11.22 country after country in Europe established secular governments 00:48:11.55\00:48:15.89 separate from the dominance of the papacy. 00:48:15.92\00:48:19.19 Ellen White has stated why the papacy 00:48:19.56\00:48:21.90 has not been able to ascend to power once more. 00:48:21.93\00:48:24.73 She says, "Let the restraints now imposed by secular 00:48:24.77\00:48:28.10 governments be removed and Rome be re-instated 00:48:28.14\00:48:31.47 in her former power and there would speedily be 00:48:31.51\00:48:34.34 a revival of her tyranny and persecution." 00:48:34.38\00:48:37.48 So Daniel 11 verse 40 says that the king of the south 00:48:39.28\00:48:43.45 would push at the king of the north. 00:48:43.85\00:48:45.85 And the time of the end there is 1798, 00:48:46.82\00:48:49.99 according to the spirit of prophecy. 00:48:50.03\00:48:51.36 So we have to look for an event where the king of the south 00:48:51.39\00:48:53.63 attacked the king of the north in 1798, or around that time. 00:48:53.66\00:48:57.00 What event do we find that fulfills that prophecy? 00:48:57.57\00:49:00.67 France. 00:49:01.84\00:49:03.17 Because France said, "I don't know God." 00:49:03.27\00:49:06.24 France rejected the true God and attacked Babylon, 00:49:07.88\00:49:11.78 or the king of the north, which is the papacy. 00:49:12.45\00:49:15.42 And Ellen White comments that on page 356. 00:49:16.02\00:49:19.95 So we know what the starting point is. 00:49:20.36\00:49:22.16 The starting point for Daniel 11 verse 40 00:49:22.19\00:49:25.43 is page 356. 00:49:25.46\00:49:27.43 The ending point of Daniel 12 verse 2 00:49:27.80\00:49:31.57 is found in, Great Controversy, page 637. 00:49:31.60\00:49:35.74 So what do you have in between? 00:49:35.77\00:49:37.71 All of the events between verse 40 00:49:38.07\00:49:40.41 and Daniel 12 verse 2. 00:49:40.84\00:49:42.54 So all you have to do is study the pages in between there 00:49:42.94\00:49:46.01 and you're going to find Ellen White's 00:50:06.84\00:50:08.17 France attacks the papacy, inflicts the deadly wound, 00:50:08.40\00:50:11.87 the elicit love relationship between church and state 00:50:12.27\00:50:14.78 is severed, and thus the papacy is restrained. 00:50:14.81\00:50:17.95 The next passage is Daniel 11:40b through 11:43. 00:50:18.61\00:50:23.49 In Great Controversy, Ellen White, from page 289 to page 605 00:50:24.05\00:50:29.09 comments on these events. 00:50:29.12\00:50:30.83 These verses describe events that transpire 00:50:30.99\00:50:34.00 between the infliction of the deadly wound in 1798 00:50:34.10\00:50:37.63 and the loud cry. 00:50:37.67\00:50:39.00 Then Daniel 11:44a you have in, Great Controversy, 605. 00:50:39.53\00:50:45.44 It's the loud cry and the sealing message 00:50:45.54\00:50:48.21 that trouble and enrage the king of the north, or the papacy. 00:50:48.24\00:50:51.55 Then you have Daniel 11:44b and Daniel 12 verse 1, 00:50:51.98\00:50:57.45 the first part of the verse, in, Great Controversy, 607, 00:50:57.49\00:51:01.29 where you have the rage of the wicked 00:51:01.52\00:51:04.46 increasing because of the loud cry and the wicked wanting to 00:51:04.49\00:51:08.33 destroy God's people. 00:51:08.36\00:51:10.37 And then you have Daniel 11 verse 45a 00:51:10.73\00:51:13.84 and 12:1b, which are parallel, beginning with, 00:51:14.17\00:51:17.87 Great Controversy, 613 and following. 00:51:17.91\00:51:20.61 There you have the universal death decree 00:51:20.88\00:51:22.68 against God's people. 00:51:22.71\00:51:24.05 It is signed as the king of the north sets up his tents 00:51:24.21\00:51:27.75 in a strategic position to deliver the final death blow 00:51:27.78\00:51:31.19 against God's people. 00:51:31.22\00:51:32.55 This causes a time of trouble for God's people 00:51:32.59\00:51:35.62 such as never has been. 00:51:35.66\00:51:37.29 Then you have Daniel 11:45b, which is parallel 00:51:37.96\00:51:41.96 to Daniel 12 verse 1c, or the third part of the verse. 00:51:42.00\00:51:46.53 And that is commented on in, Great Controversy, 00:51:46.74\00:51:49.20 635 and following. 00:51:49.40\00:51:52.01 There, the king of the north comes to his end 00:51:52.61\00:51:54.84 with none to help him because his supporters forsake him. 00:51:54.94\00:51:58.65 And as a result, God's people are delivered. 00:51:58.68\00:52:01.45 And then Daniel chapter 12 and verse 2, which is 00:52:01.88\00:52:05.25 commented on in, Great Controversy, 637, 00:52:05.29\00:52:08.22 Ellen White describes the special resurrection 00:52:08.42\00:52:11.26 of those who died in the faith of the third angel's message. 00:52:11.29\00:52:14.63 Thus, the two reference points for the beginning and ending 00:52:15.36\00:52:18.70 of Daniel 11:40-45 are the French Revolution 00:52:18.73\00:52:22.24 at the beginning as described in, Great Controversy, 265-288, 00:52:22.27\00:52:27.31 and the deliverance of God's people and the special 00:52:27.58\00:52:30.11 resurrection in, Great Controversy, 635 and 637. 00:52:30.15\00:52:34.78 In between these two reference points 00:52:35.08\00:52:37.59 we have the events that Ellen White describes 00:52:37.69\00:52:40.36 in, Great Controversy, 289-604. 00:52:40.39\00:52:44.03 A careful study of these pages will reveal 00:52:44.29\00:52:46.83 that Ellen White comments on all the details 00:52:46.86\00:52:49.70 in verses 40b through verse 43 without actually using 00:52:49.80\00:52:54.97 the language. 00:52:55.00\00:52:56.34 Are you following along with this? 00:52:56.67\00:52:58.27 It's extremely interesting. 00:52:58.57\00:53:00.14 So does Ellen White have anything to say 00:53:00.31\00:53:02.14 about verses 40-45? 00:53:02.18\00:53:03.98 You bet she does. 00:53:04.05\00:53:05.55 But she doesn't use the verse, she doesn't quote the verses, 00:53:06.31\00:53:09.35 and she doesn't use the language. 00:53:09.38\00:53:10.72 So people say, "Oh, Ellen White was silent on that." 00:53:10.75\00:53:13.02 No she wasn't. 00:53:13.05\00:53:14.39 She simply uses different terminology. 00:53:14.42\00:53:17.49 And there's a historical reason for that. 00:53:17.53\00:53:19.06 Now let's go quickly here, because time is almost up. 00:53:19.09\00:53:21.93 It is simply amazing how Ellen White vividly describes 00:53:22.86\00:53:25.67 the events of Daniel 11:40-45 without ever quoting the verses 00:53:25.70\00:53:30.47 or alluding to the language. 00:53:30.51\00:53:32.11 Why didn't she just come out and quote the verses 00:53:32.34\00:53:35.08 and then comment on them? 00:53:35.11\00:53:36.64 There's a clear historical reason. 00:53:36.85\00:53:38.55 The original view of the pioneers was that the 00:53:38.98\00:53:41.35 king of the north represents the Roman Catholic Papacy. 00:53:41.38\00:53:44.05 This is the clear view expressed in the pamphlet, 00:53:44.55\00:53:47.22 A Word to the Little Flock Scattered Abroad, 00:53:47.26\00:53:49.66 co-authored by James and Ellen White in 1847. 00:53:49.69\00:53:54.00 But in the early 1870's, Uriah Smith, who was the 00:53:54.40\00:53:58.53 highly respected editor of the, 00:53:58.57\00:54:00.17 Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 00:54:00.20\00:54:01.74 changed the view of the pioneers by re-interpreting the king
