00:01:55.66\00:01:57.11 This messenger is none other than Jesus Christ Himself. 00:01:58.81\00:02:02.31 So must this message be crucially important? 00:02:02.34\00:02:05.08 Absolutely. 00:02:05.28\00:02:06.48 Now let's talk about the identity of the book. 00:02:06.90\00:02:09.71 At the bottom of page 12, the identity of the book. 00:02:10.42\00:02:13.35 There is only one book in the Bible that was ever sealed 00:02:13.97\00:02:17.07 to be opened at the time of the end. 00:02:17.10\00:02:19.23 And that is the book that is referred to 00:02:20.02\00:02:24.26 in Daniel chapter 12 and verse 4. 00:02:24.29\00:02:26.38 So let's read that verse. 00:02:26.41\00:02:28.24 It says, "But you, Daniel, shut up the words, 00:02:29.18\00:02:32.32 and seal the book..." 00:02:32.35\00:02:34.62 So would people be able to understand what's in the book 00:02:35.55\00:02:38.58 until the time of the end? 00:02:38.71\00:02:40.27 No, but would it be understood at the time of the end? 00:02:40.30\00:02:43.44 Yes, because it's sealed until the time of the end. 00:02:43.79\00:02:47.58 And then it says that at the time of the end, 00:02:48.70\00:02:50.61 "many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase." 00:02:50.64\00:02:55.15 And I added there in brackets, knowledge of what? 00:02:55.18\00:02:58.24 Knowledge of what is contained in the little book. 00:02:58.61\00:03:01.39 Now the question is, what is this little book? 00:03:01.79\00:03:04.97 We just studied about it in our last session. 00:03:05.00\00:03:07.71 What is this book? 00:03:07.83\00:03:09.14 The entire book of Daniel, right? 00:03:10.45\00:03:12.49 Okay, the portion of Daniel that has to do with the 2300 days. 00:03:13.30\00:03:19.00 Which chapters are those? 00:03:19.03\00:03:20.69 Daniel chapter 8 through 12. 00:03:21.09\00:03:22.75 They all have the same central theme. 00:03:22.78\00:03:24.87 Now, the tense of the verb in Revelation 10 verse 2 00:03:25.46\00:03:31.02 is important. 00:03:31.05\00:03:32.30 Literally, the Greek word that describes the opening 00:03:32.71\00:03:37.15 of the book is in a perfect tense. 00:03:37.18\00:03:41.25 And it should be translated, that he had in his hand 00:03:41.45\00:03:44.06 the book, the one having been opened. 00:03:44.09\00:03:47.25 Which clearly indicates that before it was opened, 00:03:48.16\00:03:51.20 it was what? 00:03:51.23\00:03:52.27 Closed. 00:03:52.30\00:03:53.33 So is this the same book that Daniel 12 verse 4 refers to? 00:03:53.36\00:03:57.19 No doubt whatsoever about it. 00:03:57.22\00:03:59.54 In other words, the book was closed and then it was opened 00:03:59.91\00:04:03.92 in heaven immediately before the angel came down 00:04:03.95\00:04:07.90 to the earth and swore the oath that time would be no longer. 00:04:07.93\00:04:12.31 Now the little book of Daniel 12 verse 4 00:04:13.50\00:04:16.72 was unsealed when the judgment hour message was proclaimed 00:04:17.52\00:04:21.42 between 1798 and 1844. 00:04:21.45\00:04:24.73 Daniel 8:14 provides the judgment chronology. 00:04:25.35\00:04:29.40 Do you understand what I mean by that? 00:04:30.14\00:04:31.75 It gives you the 2300 day prophecy. 00:04:32.49\00:04:34.25 So it tells you when the judgment is going to begin. 00:04:34.28\00:04:36.68 So Daniel 8:14 gives you the judgment chronology. 00:04:36.71\00:04:41.16 And Revelation 14:6-7 gives you the judgment hour message. 00:04:41.46\00:04:46.71 So Daniel 8 tells you when and Revelation 14 tells you what 00:04:47.46\00:04:53.94 the message will be, the judgment hour message. 00:04:53.97\00:04:56.36 Ellen White in, Manuscript Releases, volume 18 page 15, 00:04:57.31\00:05:00.73 had this to say. 00:05:00.76\00:05:01.98 "It was the Lion of the tribe of Judah who unsealed the book..." 00:05:02.36\00:05:06.67 So now we know it was Jesus who unsealed it, right? 00:05:06.91\00:05:09.34 "...and gave to John the revelation of what should be 00:05:09.83\00:05:12.94 in these last days. 00:05:12.97\00:05:15.24 Daniel stood in his lot to bear his testimony..." 00:05:15.54\00:05:18.48 That is, not in person, but through his writings. 00:05:18.51\00:05:22.12 "...which was sealed until the time of the end..." 00:05:22.98\00:05:25.50 Now notice, when is it unsealed? 00:05:25.53\00:05:27.93 Notice carefully. 00:05:28.36\00:05:29.57 "Daniel stood in his lot to bear his testimony, 00:05:29.60\00:05:32.32 which was sealed until the time of the end, 00:05:32.69\00:05:36.16 when the first angel's message should be 00:05:36.37\00:05:38.79 proclaimed to our world." 00:05:38.82\00:05:40.58 So when was the book unsealed? 00:05:40.92\00:05:42.87 When the first angel's message was proclaimed. 00:05:43.51\00:05:46.14 And what does the first angel say? 00:05:46.44\00:05:48.33 "The hour of His judgment has come." 00:05:48.54\00:05:50.49 Is that the same theme as, "the Sanctuary shall be cleansed?" 00:05:51.02\00:05:53.91 Absolutely. 00:05:54.26\00:05:55.45 Now, these matters are of infinite importance 00:05:55.93\00:05:58.77 in these last days. 00:05:58.80\00:06:00.24 But while many shall be purified and made white 00:06:00.34\00:06:03.55 and tried, the wicked shall do wickedly, 00:06:03.58\00:06:06.52 and none of the wicked shall understand. 00:06:06.55\00:06:09.07 The book of Daniel is unsealed in the revelation to John 00:06:09.67\00:06:13.85 and carries us forward to the last scenes 00:06:13.95\00:06:17.15 of this earth's history. 00:06:17.18\00:06:18.67 In another statement that we find in, Great Controversy, 00:06:19.38\00:06:22.46 page 356, Ellen White explains when this book was unsealed. 00:06:22.49\00:06:28.69 It was unsealed when the judgment hour 00:06:28.72\00:06:30.43 message was proclaimed. 00:06:30.46\00:06:32.23 The 2300 day prophecy was understood. 00:06:32.26\00:06:35.29 She says this, "The message of salvation has been preached 00:06:35.65\00:06:39.15 in all ages; but this message is a part of the gospel 00:06:39.18\00:06:44.65 which could be proclaimed only in the last days, for only then 00:06:44.68\00:06:49.02 would it be true that the hour of Judgment had come." 00:06:49.22\00:06:52.53 Could Martin Luther preach, "The hour of His judgment has come." 00:06:52.95\00:06:55.48 Why not? 00:06:55.90\00:06:56.93 Because the judgment didn't begin in Martin Luther's day. 00:06:57.21\00:06:59.87 "The prophecies present a succession of events 00:07:00.90\00:07:04.22 leading down to the opening of the Judgment. 00:07:04.36\00:07:06.68 This is especially true of the book of Daniel." 00:07:07.94\00:07:10.31 Remember Daniel 7? 00:07:10.34\00:07:11.69 Lion, bear, leopard, dragon, ten horns, little horn, judgment. 00:07:11.72\00:07:16.21 So she's saying here that, "The prophecies present 00:07:16.84\00:07:19.82 a succession of events," that's Daniel 7, 00:07:19.85\00:07:22.39 "leading down to the opening of the judgment." 00:07:22.69\00:07:25.55 Which is when the Ancient of Days sits, 00:07:25.58\00:07:27.62 and the Son of Man comes to where the Ancient of Days was. 00:07:27.82\00:07:30.98 Now she continues saying, "This is true especially 00:07:31.66\00:07:34.22 of the book of Daniel. 00:07:34.25\00:07:35.46 But that part of his prophecy which related 00:07:35.49\00:07:38.19 to the last days..." 00:07:38.22\00:07:39.85 So it's not all of Daniel. 00:07:40.84\00:07:42.44 "...Daniel was bidden to close up and seal 00:07:43.41\00:07:45.83 'to the time of the end.' 00:07:45.86\00:07:47.25 Not till we reach this time could a message concerning 00:07:47.55\00:07:51.68 the Judgment be proclaimed, based on the fulfillment 00:07:51.71\00:07:55.37 of these prophecies. 00:07:55.40\00:07:56.58 But at the time of the end, says the prophet, 00:07:56.61\00:07:58.66 'many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.'" 00:07:58.69\00:08:01.88 So what is the little book that was unsealed? 00:08:01.91\00:08:04.94 It was Daniel 8 through 12. 00:08:06.17\00:08:08.16 And what is the central theme of Daniel 8 through 12? 00:08:08.72\00:08:11.68 The judgment hour message. 00:08:12.77\00:08:15.49 The 2300 days. 00:08:16.04\00:08:18.43 And in this statement that I read before 00:08:19.10\00:08:20.98 when we dealt with the little sealed book of Daniel, 00:08:21.01\00:08:24.42 Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary, 00:08:25.28\00:08:26.79 volume 7 page 971, Ellen White says, "The unsealing 00:08:26.82\00:08:32.09 of the little book was the message in relation to time." 00:08:32.12\00:08:35.85 So what was the one thing that was not unsealed 00:08:37.16\00:08:41.75 until the time of the end? 00:08:41.78\00:08:43.09 The 2300 day prophecy. 00:08:43.70\00:08:46.38 That is the little book. 00:08:46.41\00:08:47.95 That's important. 00:08:48.87\00:08:50.06 Because that's the little book that John is told to eat. 00:08:50.58\00:08:54.24 It's not all of Daniel. 00:08:54.84\00:08:56.22 Daniel 1 through 7 would not have caused a disappointment. 00:08:56.66\00:08:59.64 What causes a disappointment is the 2300 day prophecy. 00:09:00.63\00:09:04.62 The time element. 00:09:04.65\00:09:06.32 Now, when was the book opened is a very important point. 00:09:07.14\00:09:10.75 It was opened for people to study and proclaim 00:09:12.00\00:09:15.42 toward the end of human history just before the seventh angel 00:09:15.45\00:09:19.81 blows his trumpet and the mystery of God is finished. 00:09:19.84\00:09:22.45 Did you catch that in the passage? 00:09:22.48\00:09:24.20 Just before the seventh angel blows his trumpet, 00:09:24.45\00:09:27.21 this angel opens the book and presents the message 00:09:28.45\00:09:33.06 from the book. 00:09:33.09\00:09:34.33 Now notice Ellen White corroborates this point 00:09:34.69\00:09:37.62 in a statement that is found in, Great Controversy, 356. 00:09:38.07\00:09:42.52 She says, "No such message..." 00:09:42.55\00:09:45.08 She's referring to Revelation 14:6-7 00:09:45.11\00:09:47.64 where it says, "The hour of His judgment has come." 00:09:47.67\00:09:49.66 "No such message has ever been given in past ages. 00:09:49.89\00:09:54.19 Paul, as we have seen, did not preach it; 00:09:54.68\00:09:59.42 he pointed his brethren into the then far-distant future 00:09:59.73\00:10:04.25 for the coming of the Lord. 00:10:04.35\00:10:06.95 The reformers did not proclaim it. 00:10:07.29\00:10:09.51 Martin Luther placed the Judgment about three hundred 00:10:09.84\00:10:12.98 years in the future from his day." 00:10:13.01\00:10:15.06 Now when was the little book opened then? 00:10:15.66\00:10:17.80 "But since 1798..." 00:10:18.21\00:10:21.88 When does the time of the end begin? 00:10:23.97\00:10:25.79 The book is to be sealed until the time of the end. 00:10:26.01\00:10:27.92 When is the time of the end? 1798. 00:10:27.95\00:10:30.88 So since 1798, the book of Daniel has been unsealed. 00:10:31.15\00:10:36.90 Did William Miller and the Millerites preach that 00:10:37.60\00:10:39.75 the judgment was upcoming? 00:10:39.78\00:10:41.55 They didn't understand what the prophecy meant, 00:10:41.96\00:10:44.55 but they were right about the chronology. 00:10:44.58\00:10:46.59 Did Joseph Wolff preach it? Yes. 00:10:47.56\00:10:50.62 How about Lacunza? He preached it. 00:10:50.65\00:10:53.54 There were many after 1798 that preached the judgment 00:10:53.57\00:10:56.78 hour message; that the judgment was about to arrive, 00:10:56.81\00:10:59.03 Jesus was soon to come. 00:10:59.06\00:11:00.48 And they studied the prophecy of the 2300 days 00:11:01.03\00:11:03.61 and they said, you know, that this prophecy 00:11:03.64\00:11:05.23 was going to be fulfilled in 1843. 00:11:05.26\00:11:07.33 And then they adjusted it to 1844. 00:11:07.36\00:11:09.67 So the little book, before Jesus descended with the book 00:11:11.10\00:11:15.18 and told John to eat it, the book was unsealed in heaven. 00:11:15.21\00:11:18.36 And the date of its unsealing was in 1798. 00:11:19.13\00:11:22.49 Is that point clear? 00:11:22.52\00:11:23.80 Now, this message was to be a global extension, right? 00:11:25.20\00:11:28.37 This global message is presented, now listen to this, 00:11:30.37\00:11:34.19 is presented symbolically at the beginning of the chapter. 00:11:34.28\00:11:37.59 What is the symbol that is used to indicate 00:11:39.50\00:11:41.40 that it's going to be universal? 00:11:41.43\00:11:42.80 The feet of the angel are placed on the sea and on the land. 00:11:43.85\00:11:47.78 Is that a symbolic portrayal of the message going 00:11:48.89\00:11:51.78 to the whole world? 00:11:51.88\00:11:53.25 Yes. 00:11:53.28\00:11:54.31 But at the end, it uses literal language and explains 00:11:54.34\00:11:59.31 what it means to have the foot on the sea and on the land. 00:11:59.34\00:12:02.48 John is told to prophecy to what again? 00:12:03.26\00:12:07.98 To people, nations, tongues, and kings. 00:12:08.08\00:12:11.92 So placing the foot on the sea and on the land 00:12:13.51\00:12:15.94 means a universal message. 00:12:15.97\00:12:17.59 And then this is explained when he's told to prophesy again. 00:12:17.62\00:12:21.54 This time there's not a foot on the sea and on the land. 00:12:22.47\00:12:24.78 This time it explains what that means. 00:12:24.81\00:12:26.86 People, nations, tongues, and kings. 00:12:27.01\00:12:29.55 Now notice what Ellen White had to say in volume 2 of, 00:12:31.02\00:12:34.41 Selected Messages, pages 107 and 108. 00:12:34.44\00:12:37.89 "The message of Revelation 14 proclaiming that the hour of 00:12:38.47\00:12:41.30 God's judgment is come is given in the time of the end; 00:12:41.33\00:12:45.70 and the angel of Revelation 10 is represented as having 00:12:45.98\00:12:49.39 one foot on the sea and one foot on the land, 00:12:49.42\00:12:52.63 showing that the message will be carried to distant lands, 00:12:52.91\00:12:56.87 the ocean will be crossed, and the islands of the sea 00:12:57.23\00:13:00.76 will hear the proclamation of the last message 00:13:00.79\00:13:03.61 of warning to our world." 00:13:03.64\00:13:05.41 In other words, the foot on the sea and on the land 00:13:05.73\00:13:07.80 refers to the global reach of this message. 00:13:08.31\00:13:13.34 It could also mean that the message is going to the 00:13:13.95\00:13:17.16 old world and to the new world. 00:13:17.19\00:13:19.28 Because in Revelation, there is a beast that rises from the sea. 00:13:20.15\00:13:24.07 That's Europe. 00:13:24.10\00:13:25.34 And there's another beast that rises from the earth. 00:13:25.67\00:13:28.22 That's the United States. 00:13:28.25\00:13:29.92 So in other words, the message is to go to the new world 00:13:30.02\00:13:32.60 and to the old world. 00:13:32.63\00:13:33.92 And interestingly enough, the act of planting the feet, 00:13:33.95\00:13:37.27 according to Deuteronomy 11:24, means that you're staking 00:13:37.74\00:13:41.15 that ground and you're saying, "This is mine." 00:13:41.18\00:13:43.61 You can read that text. 00:13:44.79\00:13:46.64 God says, "Wherever you plant your feet, that will be yours." 00:13:46.67\00:13:49.53 So Jesus is staking claim to the earth by the judgment 00:13:49.56\00:13:54.10 that He's going to perform. 00:13:54.13\00:13:55.67 So far so good? 00:13:56.58\00:13:57.98 Okay, now let's talk about the seven thunders. 00:13:58.73\00:14:02.25 You notice that when He comes down with the open book, 00:14:02.61\00:14:05.24 suddenly Jesus roars like a lion. 00:14:05.70\00:14:09.59 And when He roars, you hear seven thunders come out. 00:14:09.62\00:14:15.03 In other words, the echo of His voice is seven thunders. 00:14:15.13\00:14:18.99 Now what are these seven thunders? 00:14:19.72\00:14:21.91 Well, we need to go to John 12:28-29. 00:14:22.55\00:14:26.10 These were not just noise. 00:14:26.25\00:14:28.68 The thunders were not just thunders like, you know, 00:14:29.79\00:14:32.66 on a rainy day, you know, when you have a thunder storm. 00:14:32.69\00:14:35.63 The thunder doesn't have any rhyme or reason, 00:14:35.73\00:14:37.80 it's just noise. 00:14:37.83\00:14:38.93 But the seven thunders, when the lion rages and roars, 00:14:38.96\00:14:44.49 when Jesus roars like a lion, He actually speaks 00:14:44.52\00:14:47.90 an intelligible message. 00:14:47.93\00:14:49.55 And the echo is the thunders. 00:14:50.51\00:14:52.48 Now what are the seven thunders? 00:14:53.16\00:14:54.92 Well, we need to go back to John 12:28-29 00:14:54.95\00:14:58.54 where thunders are explained. 00:14:58.64\00:15:01.19 It says there, now Jesus is close to the point of His death, 00:15:02.03\00:15:05.26 and He actually speaks to His Father and He says, 00:15:06.28\00:15:10.22 "'Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? 00:15:10.25\00:15:14.19 "Father, save Me from this hour?" 00:15:14.55\00:15:16.67 But for this purpose I came to this hour. 00:15:16.93\00:15:19.77 Father, glorify Your name.' 00:15:20.21\00:15:22.48 Then a voice came from heaven, saying, 00:15:22.90\00:15:24.55 'I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.'" 00:15:24.58\00:15:28.26 Could the voice be understood? 00:15:29.80\00:15:31.74 Was the message understandable? 00:15:32.02\00:15:34.21 It most certainly was. 00:15:34.24\00:15:35.56 But now notice how the people reacted. 00:15:35.59\00:15:37.82 "Therefore the people who stood by and heard it 00:15:38.43\00:15:40.62 said that it had thundered. 00:15:40.65\00:15:44.22 Others said, 'An angel has spoken to Him.'" 00:15:45.19\00:15:48.42 So did the thunders have an intelligible message? 00:15:49.62\00:15:53.29 Were they spoken words? Yes. 00:15:53.56\00:15:55.71 There was something that Jesus spoke when He came down 00:15:55.74\00:15:58.62 with the open book. 00:15:58.65\00:15:59.85 And the thunders, the peals of thunder, 00:16:00.78\00:16:03.88 were the echo of the words that He spoke. 00:16:03.91\00:16:07.79 Now let's notice several important points. 00:16:09.07\00:16:11.44 John understood what the thunders uttered, 00:16:11.92\00:16:14.72 and was about to write... 00:16:15.73\00:16:16.76 Remember we read this? 00:16:16.79\00:16:18.07 ...but was forbidden by the angel to write 00:16:19.55\00:16:21.44 what the thunders uttered. 00:16:21.47\00:16:23.08 So did John understand that the thunders were intelligible? 00:16:23.11\00:16:26.54 Absolutely. 00:16:26.88\00:16:27.97 The little book was open, which means that its message 00:16:29.41\00:16:32.15 could be studied and understood, right? 00:16:32.18\00:16:34.03 On the other hand, what the thunders uttered could be 00:16:34.94\00:16:37.42 understood by John, but he was forbidden to write it out. 00:16:37.45\00:16:40.90 So you have the little book that's open, 00:16:41.28\00:16:42.79 it can be understood, but you have the thunders 00:16:42.82\00:16:46.20 that utter words and John is told, 00:16:46.31\00:16:48.66 "This is not to be understood right now." 00:16:48.86\00:16:50.72 The message uttered by the mighty angel was given to John, 00:16:51.97\00:16:55.35 and then the message was sealed. 00:16:55.55\00:16:57.65 The book was unsealed, but what the thunders uttered was sealed. 00:16:59.26\00:17:02.95 Are you with me? 00:17:02.98\00:17:04.04 The events that the thunders uttered, very important point, 00:17:05.56\00:17:09.74 must have transpired sometime between 1798 and 1844 00:17:10.39\00:17:15.26 because they occurred after the book was opened in 1798 00:17:16.83\00:17:20.98 and before the angel swore the oath in 1844. 00:17:21.01\00:17:24.39 Are you following my point? 00:17:27.19\00:17:28.58 Yeah, He opened the book in 1798. 00:17:29.29\00:17:32.80 He descends with the book in His hand. 00:17:32.90\00:17:35.13 Then He utters His voice and you have the seven thunders. 00:17:35.16\00:17:38.57 And that is before He says that time will be no longer. 00:17:38.77\00:17:41.49 And He says time will be no longer in 1844. 00:17:41.78\00:17:44.52 There would be no more prophetic dates after that. 00:17:44.63\00:17:47.00 We're going to study this a little bit further on later. 00:17:47.69\00:17:52.19 So this is happening somewhere between what? 00:17:52.48\00:17:55.20 Somewhere between 1798 and 1844. 00:17:55.53\00:17:59.99 Now according to Ellen White, the seven thunders 00:18:01.48\00:18:05.19 uttered a delineation of events that would transpire 00:18:05.22\00:18:08.78 between 1842 and 1844. 00:18:08.81\00:18:11.39 In other words, what the thunders uttered 00:18:12.63\00:18:14.64 were events that took place between 1842 and 1844. 00:18:14.84\00:18:17.86 Some people are making the thunders future. 00:18:17.89\00:18:20.40 They are Seventh-day Adventist futurists. 00:18:21.23\00:18:23.85 There is no necessity to make the thunders future. 00:18:24.93\00:18:29.16 The spirit of prophecy is clear about when 00:18:29.70\00:18:32.11 these thunders uttered. 00:18:32.14\00:18:33.26 It was between 1798 and 1844. 00:18:33.29\00:18:35.80 More specifically, between 1842 and 1844. 00:18:35.83\00:18:39.84 She seems to indicate that the thunders announced 00:18:41.12\00:18:43.99 that the Millerites would suffer a disappointment 00:18:44.02\00:18:46.52 when Jesus did not come as expected about the year 1843 00:18:47.13\00:18:51.26 and in the spring of 1844. 00:18:51.29\00:18:53.24 So basically, what the thunders uttered 00:18:54.72\00:18:56.68 was that there was going to be a disappointment. 00:18:56.71\00:18:58.88 Was it good for the people to know that? 00:19:02.66\00:19:04.73 Was it good for the Millerites to know that they were wrong 00:19:05.63\00:19:08.44 about the chronology? 00:19:08.47\00:19:09.84 No it wasn't. 00:19:10.00\00:19:11.05 It wasn't good for them to know that at that point 00:19:11.38\00:19:13.51 between 1842 and 1844. 00:19:13.54\00:19:15.75 Let's notice what Ellen White says about this, 00:19:17.11\00:19:19.79 why the thunders were sealed, what the voice said was sealed. 00:19:19.82\00:19:24.29 The Millerites did not need to know that 00:19:25.67\00:19:28.93 at that particular point. 00:19:28.96\00:19:30.37 And let's notice the reason why. 00:19:30.40\00:19:32.28 Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary, volume 7 page 971. 00:19:34.09\00:19:37.84 "The special light given to John which was expressed 00:19:39.21\00:19:41.96 in the seven thunders was a delineation of events 00:19:41.99\00:19:47.23 which would transpire under the first and second 00:19:47.26\00:19:50.33 angels' messages." 00:19:50.36\00:19:52.07 Do you know when the first and second angels' 00:19:52.93\00:19:55.10 messages were proclaimed? 00:19:55.13\00:19:56.32 1842 to 1844. 00:19:56.42\00:19:58.42 So did the thunders sound already? 00:19:58.93\00:20:01.21 Yes they did. 00:20:01.67\00:20:02.75 And now notice, "It was not best for the people 00:20:03.30\00:20:06.29 to know these things..." 00:20:06.32\00:20:08.03 John knew. 00:20:09.94\00:20:11.05 But John was told, "Seal it. 00:20:11.77\00:20:13.57 Don't explain it." 00:20:14.18\00:20:15.24 "It was not best for the people to know these things..." 00:20:15.97\00:20:18.59 For what reason? 00:20:19.81\00:20:21.06 "...for their faith must necessarily be tested." 00:20:21.58\00:20:26.73 Now there's another couple of statements, 00:20:28.42\00:20:29.89 really eye opening statements, by the spirit of prophecy. 00:20:29.92\00:20:32.99 One of them is in, Early Writings, 235-236. 00:20:33.99\00:20:36.96 You're aware that the Millerites set a couple of dates 00:20:36.99\00:20:39.86 before October 22, 1844. 00:20:39.89\00:20:42.28 First they thought He was going to come about the year 1843. 00:20:42.95\00:20:46.06 Then they said in the spring of 1844. 00:20:46.09\00:20:48.33 And then they realized in the summer of 1844 00:20:48.69\00:20:51.47 that Jesus did not come in the spring, 00:20:51.96\00:20:53.94 because the Day of Atonement was not in the spring. 00:20:54.20\00:20:56.52 It was in the fall. 00:20:56.55\00:20:57.58 That's called, the seventh month movement. 00:20:58.82\00:21:00.65 Samuel Snow preached at a camp meeting, 00:21:00.68\00:21:03.24 and he said, "Hey, you know, we were expecting Jesus 00:21:03.80\00:21:06.57 to fulfill the Day of Atonement in the spring. 00:21:06.60\00:21:08.43 But the Day of Atonement was not in the spring, 00:21:08.46\00:21:10.41 it was in the fall. 00:21:10.44\00:21:11.55 And so you have the midnight cry, the awakening, 00:21:12.64\00:21:15.44 in the summer of 1844. 00:21:15.47\00:21:17.39 Notice what Ellen White says about 00:21:19.92\00:21:21.37 these first disappointments. 00:21:21.40\00:21:23.31 Not the great one, but the first two. 00:21:23.34\00:21:25.84 "I saw the people of God joyful in expectation, 00:21:26.61\00:21:30.49 looking for their Lord. 00:21:30.77\00:21:32.73 But God designed to prove them. 00:21:33.17\00:21:35.39 His hand covered a mistake in the reckoning 00:21:35.83\00:21:38.78 of the prophetic periods." 00:21:38.81\00:21:40.68 Isn't that interesting? 00:21:44.13\00:21:45.43 And what was the mistake? 00:21:49.12\00:21:50.79 They said 1843 because they did not reckon the year zero. 00:21:51.56\00:21:56.16 You see, 1 BC jumps to 1 AD. 00:21:58.03\00:22:01.11 There's only one year between 1 BC and 1 AD, 00:22:01.86\00:22:04.54 but they counted 1 BC and 1 AD as two years. 00:22:04.57\00:22:08.16 That's why they came to 1843. 00:22:08.74\00:22:10.75 They should have counted it only as one. 00:22:13.46\00:22:15.17 Because from 1 BC to 1 AD, there's one year. 00:22:15.85\00:22:18.40 Now notice, she continues saying, "Those who were 00:22:19.27\00:22:24.92 looking for their Lord did not discover this mistake, 00:22:24.95\00:22:27.83 and the most learned men who opposed the time 00:22:28.36\00:22:30.65 also failed to see it. 00:22:30.68\00:22:32.03 God designed that His people should meet 00:22:32.47\00:22:34.85 with a disappointment. 00:22:34.88\00:22:36.20 The time passed, and those who had looked with 00:22:37.35\00:22:39.41 joyful expectation for their Saviour were sad and 00:22:39.44\00:22:42.51 disheartened, while those who had not loved the 00:22:42.54\00:22:45.27 appearing of Jesus, but embraced the message through fear, 00:22:45.30\00:22:48.31 were pleased that He did not come at the time of expectation. 00:22:48.41\00:22:52.49 Their profession had not affected the heart 00:22:52.82\00:22:55.85 and purified the life. 00:22:55.88\00:22:57.26 The passing of the time was well calculated 00:22:57.29\00:22:59.42 to reveal such hearts. 00:22:59.45\00:23:01.38 They were the first to turn and ridicule the sorrowful, 00:23:01.80\00:23:04.66 disappointed ones who really loved the appearing 00:23:04.69\00:23:06.97 of their Saviour. 00:23:07.00\00:23:08.15 I saw the wisdom of God in proving His people 00:23:08.37\00:23:10.94 and giving them a searching test to discover those who would 00:23:10.97\00:23:14.66 shrink and turn back in the hour of trial." 00:23:14.69\00:23:17.57 So basically, the seven thunders uttered that there would a 00:23:18.79\00:23:22.27 disappointment, they would miscalculate 00:23:22.30\00:23:23.94 the prophetic periods. 00:23:23.97\00:23:25.38 And God told John, "Don't explain it." 00:23:27.22\00:23:29.65 There's a second statement, Early Writings, 236. 00:23:30.91\00:23:33.77 She says, "Those faithful, disappointed ones, 00:23:34.55\00:23:37.24 who could not understand..." 00:23:37.60\00:23:39.81 Why could they not understand? 00:23:40.01\00:23:41.49 Because the thunders were what? 00:23:42.03\00:23:43.73 Sealed. 00:23:43.76\00:23:44.80 They could not understand. 00:23:45.26\00:23:46.72 "...why their Lord did not come, were not left in darkness. 00:23:47.04\00:23:50.17 Again they were led to their Bibles to search 00:23:50.49\00:23:52.62 the prophetic periods. 00:23:52.65\00:23:53.84 The hand of the Lord was removed from the figures, 00:23:53.94\00:23:57.31 and the mistake was explained. 00:23:57.51\00:23:59.37 They saw that the prophetic periods reached to 1844, 00:23:59.91\00:24:02.86 and that the same evidence which they had presented 00:24:02.96\00:24:05.42 to show that the prophetic periods closed in 1843, 00:24:05.45\00:24:08.47 proved that they would terminate in 1844." 00:24:08.57\00:24:12.54 Now some have misunderstood an Ellen White statement 00:24:14.18\00:24:17.46 where she appears to state that the thunders 00:24:17.78\00:24:19.63 will sound in the future. 00:24:19.66\00:24:21.00 She wrote this quotation in 1900. 00:24:21.89\00:24:24.34 So presumably, the thunders had not yet uttered their voice 00:24:24.92\00:24:28.87 at that time. 00:24:28.90\00:24:30.11 See, people are sometimes careless in the way that they 00:24:31.05\00:24:34.92 handle the writings of Ellen White. 00:24:34.95\00:24:36.80 They say she wrote in 1900 that the thunders are future. 00:24:37.83\00:24:40.58 So they could not have been fulfilled between 1842 and 1844. 00:24:40.61\00:24:44.23 But you have to look at this carefully. 00:24:45.29\00:24:47.10 Here's the quotation. 00:24:47.93\00:24:49.30 "After these seven thunders uttered these voices, 00:24:50.09\00:24:53.37 the injunction comes to John, as to Daniel, 00:24:53.78\00:24:56.95 in regard to the little book: 'Seal up those things 00:24:57.40\00:25:01.27 which the seven thunders uttered.'" 00:25:01.30\00:25:03.21 Now listen carefully. 00:25:04.95\00:25:06.17 "These relate to future events..." 00:25:06.46\00:25:10.92 Future events from whose time? 00:25:13.34\00:25:15.41 From the time of Daniel and John. 00:25:16.04\00:25:17.90 There's the key. 00:25:18.46\00:25:19.55 Not future from 1844. 00:25:20.25\00:25:22.26 And you're going to see that clearly. 00:25:23.35\00:25:25.06 "These relate to future events which will 00:25:25.49\00:25:28.86 be disclosed in their order. 00:25:28.89\00:25:30.57 Daniel shall stand in his lot at the end of the days. 00:25:30.60\00:25:33.21 John sees the little book unsealed." 00:25:33.24\00:25:35.48 So from whose perspective is this being seen? 00:25:35.51\00:25:38.12 From the perspective of John. 00:25:38.61\00:25:40.53 It says, "Then Daniel's prophecies have their 00:25:40.74\00:25:44.73 proper place in the first, second, and third angels' 00:25:44.76\00:25:47.25 messages to be given to the world. 00:25:47.28\00:25:49.40 The unsealing of the little book was the message 00:25:49.43\00:25:52.54 in relation to time." 00:25:52.57\00:25:54.09 Now the crucial question here is this, 00:25:55.30\00:25:57.64 where the seven thunders going to utter events 00:25:57.67\00:26:00.37 that were future from the time frame of Daniel and John 00:26:00.40\00:26:03.67 or from the time frame of Ellen White? 00:26:03.70\00:26:06.63 A careful reading of the quotation reveals 00:26:07.25\00:26:10.07 that the seven thunders are future from the time frame 00:26:10.10\00:26:13.13 of Daniel and John, not from the time frame of Ellen White. 00:26:13.16\00:26:17.31 The sentence before the quotation is the key. 00:26:17.77\00:26:22.40 Before the quotation that I just read from. 00:26:23.56\00:26:25.95 Ellen White says, "After these seven thunders 00:26:26.36\00:26:29.27 uttered their voices, the injunction comes to John, 00:26:29.30\00:26:33.38 as to Daniel, in regard to the little book: 00:26:34.14\00:26:37.68 'Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered.'" 00:26:38.01\00:26:41.88 So from which perspective are you to see the 00:26:42.40\00:26:44.89 seven thunders future? 00:26:44.92\00:26:46.19 From the time period of John and Daniel 00:26:46.22\00:26:49.33 or from 1900? 00:26:49.36\00:26:51.37 From John and Daniel. 00:26:52.26\00:26:53.34 The context of Ellen White's statement makes this 00:26:53.37\00:26:55.82 absolutely crystal clear. 00:26:55.85\00:26:57.45 Now let's talk about the oath. 00:26:57.48\00:26:59.03 So the angel utters his voice; seven thunders sound. 00:27:00.05\00:27:04.97 He's told, "Seal it. 00:27:05.47\00:27:07.04 It's not good for the people to understand this at this point." 00:27:07.07\00:27:09.46 So there was going to be a disappointment. 00:27:09.97\00:27:11.69 They were going to misunderstand some chronological details, 00:27:12.26\00:27:15.67 and they were going to be disappointed. 00:27:15.70\00:27:17.07 Why would God do that? 00:27:17.26\00:27:18.74 Because He wanted to sift those who truly loved the Lord 00:27:18.77\00:27:23.72 from those who did not love the Lord. 00:27:23.92\00:27:26.29 You say, "Why would He do something like that?" 00:27:27.94\00:27:29.62 Well let me ask you something. 00:27:29.65\00:27:30.88 Did Jesus choreograph the triumphal entry into Jerusalem? 00:27:31.83\00:27:36.31 Did He tell the disciples to go get a donkey? 00:27:37.13\00:27:39.40 Did He sit on it? 00:27:40.06\00:27:41.32 Did He allow the people to proclaim Him, 00:27:42.19\00:27:43.96 "Oh, Hosanna in the highest. 00:27:43.99\00:27:45.95 The king of the Jews." 00:27:45.98\00:27:47.46 Did Jesus know that they were severely wrong 00:27:48.27\00:27:51.12 in their understanding? 00:27:51.15\00:27:52.55 So why didn't He say something? 00:27:54.54\00:27:56.14 Because it was necessary to reveal who was who. 00:27:57.34\00:28:01.09 Are you with me? 00:28:02.78\00:28:03.81 When the crisis came, what happened? 00:28:04.70\00:28:06.75 There was a sifting. 00:28:07.05\00:28:08.34 And those who were faithful remained. 00:28:09.28\00:28:11.12 And the hypocrites were shaken out. 00:28:11.72\00:28:13.74 So if Jesus could do it at the triumphal entry, 00:28:14.34\00:28:18.26 why couldn't He do it here to show who was sincere 00:28:18.29\00:28:22.38 and who was not sincere in the Millerite movement. 00:28:22.41\00:28:25.71 Now let's talk about the oath. 00:28:25.74\00:28:26.95 Are we doing well so far? 00:28:26.98\00:28:28.32 Okay, the oath. 00:28:28.84\00:28:30.08 After the angel had descended with the open book, 1798, 00:28:30.90\00:28:35.16 and the thunders had uttered their voices, 1842 and 1843, 00:28:35.72\00:28:40.26 and actually up to the spring of 1844, 00:28:41.17\00:28:43.38 an announcement was made with an oath 00:28:43.77\00:28:46.77 that prophetic time would be no longer. 00:28:46.80\00:28:49.36 When was that oath made? 00:28:49.39\00:28:50.75 1844. 00:28:51.98\00:28:53.31 Why would the voice say that time will be no longer? 00:28:54.69\00:28:58.61 What time was that referring to, the oath, 00:28:59.84\00:29:02.30 time will be no longer? 00:29:02.33\00:29:04.00 Which prophetic time, specifically? 00:29:04.72\00:29:07.10 The 2300 days. 00:29:07.77\00:29:09.47 In other words, after Daniel 8:14 is fulfilled 00:29:09.90\00:29:14.16 in 1844, there will be no more prophecies 00:29:14.19\00:29:16.77 having to do with time. 00:29:16.80\00:29:18.00 And we have all kinds of Adventist futurists 00:29:18.88\00:29:22.01 who are re-applying the 1260, 1290, 1335. 00:29:23.15\00:29:27.80 Some of them are re-applying the 2300 days and they're saying 00:29:27.83\00:29:30.90 the 42 months are future. 00:29:30.93\00:29:32.42 It's amiss. 00:29:32.52\00:29:33.98 And what it does is it dilutes the true meaning 00:29:35.75\00:29:38.70 of Bible prophecy. 00:29:39.34\00:29:40.77 Now, after the angel descended then with the open book, 1798, 00:29:43.03\00:29:49.23 the thunders uttered their voices, 1842 to 1844, 00:29:49.26\00:29:54.13 at least the spring of 1844, an announcement was made 00:29:54.16\00:29:57.14 with an oath that prophetic time would be no longer. 00:29:57.17\00:29:59.69 That would be 1844. 00:29:59.72\00:30:01.91 It is obvious that the declaration, 00:30:02.59\00:30:04.97 "time will be no longer," cannot have been made 00:30:05.00\00:30:08.83 by the angel before the 42 months, 1260 days, 00:30:08.86\00:30:12.97 three and a half times, three and a half days, 00:30:13.00\00:30:15.60 and 2300 days were fulfilled. 00:30:15.63\00:30:17.57 Is that clear? 00:30:18.96\00:30:19.99 Ellen White explains in, Selected Messages, 00:30:22.89\00:30:25.12 volume 2 page 108, "This time, which the angel declares with 00:30:25.15\00:30:30.65 the solemn oath, is not the end of this world's history, 00:30:30.68\00:30:34.69 neither of probationary time, but of prophetic time, 00:30:35.18\00:30:39.32 which should precede the advent of our Lord. 00:30:40.06\00:30:42.82 That is, the people will not have another message 00:30:43.16\00:30:46.63 upon definite time." 00:30:46.66\00:30:48.19 Now what part of that don't you understand? 00:30:49.46\00:30:51.22 "After this period of time, reaching from 1842 to 1844, 00:30:52.40\00:30:57.32 there can be no definite tracing of the prophetic time. 00:30:57.35\00:31:00.70 The longest reckoning reaches to the autumn of 1844." 00:31:00.73\00:31:04.84 She also says in volume 2 of, Selected Messages, page 108, 00:31:05.74\00:31:12.21 "This message announces the end of the prophetic periods. 00:31:12.41\00:31:15.76 The disappointment of those who expected to see our Lord in 1844 00:31:15.93\00:31:19.43 was indeed bitter to those who had so ardently 00:31:19.46\00:31:22.06 looked for His appearing. 00:31:22.09\00:31:23.41 It was in the Lord's order that this disappointment 00:31:23.44\00:31:26.50 should come, and that hearts should be revealed." 00:31:26.53\00:31:30.07 Now how do we know, aside from what the 00:31:30.76\00:31:32.90 spirit of prophecy says... 00:31:32.93\00:31:33.96 Because she says that this is not the end of probationary time 00:31:33.99\00:31:36.83 and it is not the end of time in terms of the second coming. 00:31:37.03\00:31:41.13 How do we know from the Bible that this is talking about 00:31:41.33\00:31:43.82 a different kind of ending of time, that time will be 00:31:43.85\00:31:46.73 no longer, and it's not talking about chronological time? 00:31:46.76\00:31:50.30 Two things that we need to take into account. 00:31:51.34\00:31:53.79 Very important. 00:31:53.82\00:31:54.89 This announcement is made during the period 00:31:55.81\00:31:58.86 of the sixth trumpet. 00:31:58.89\00:32:00.14 And Jesus does not come to take over His kingdom 00:32:00.99\00:32:03.56 until the seventh trumpet. 00:32:03.59\00:32:05.20 So could, "time will be no longer," 00:32:06.33\00:32:08.89 be the end of the world? 00:32:08.92\00:32:10.76 No, because the end of the world comes in the seventh trumpet. 00:32:11.41\00:32:14.18 But it's at the sixth trumpet that the angel says that 00:32:15.16\00:32:17.51 time will be no longer. 00:32:17.54\00:32:18.79 So it has to be a different kind of time than the end of time, 00:32:19.07\00:32:22.95 as we refer to it. 00:32:22.98\00:32:24.29 And even more importantly, after the announcement was made 00:32:25.34\00:32:28.12 that time will be no longer, John was instructed 00:32:28.15\00:32:31.24 to prophesy again. 00:32:31.27\00:32:32.81 How could he do this if the world had come to an end? 00:32:33.88\00:32:36.67 Is that clear? 00:32:39.83\00:32:40.94 How could he prophesy again if time had come to an end? 00:32:41.89\00:32:44.90 History. 00:32:46.29\00:32:47.32 It must mean that the time that would be no longer 00:32:47.43\00:32:51.10 has to be a different kind of time. 00:32:51.13\00:32:54.26 The translation in most versions, "there should 00:32:56.48\00:32:59.87 no longer be any delay," is incorrect. 00:32:59.90\00:33:04.00 In the book of Revelation, the word, "chronos," "time," 00:33:04.77\00:33:09.32 is used three other times. 00:33:09.56\00:33:11.66 And in none of them can the word be translated 00:33:12.18\00:33:15.68 in such a way as, "delay." 00:33:15.71\00:33:18.10 The word, "time," appears in at least thirty places 00:33:19.13\00:33:22.22 in the New Testament, but not once is it translated, "delay," 00:33:22.25\00:33:25.83 by modern versions except in this verse. 00:33:25.86\00:33:29.48 That's pretty telling, isn't it. 00:33:32.11\00:33:33.72 The New Testament has a way of expressing, "delay." 00:33:34.85\00:33:39.00 For example, in Matthew 24:48, the word, "chronizo," is used 00:33:40.25\00:33:45.03 of the unfaithful servant who says, "My master is delayed." 00:33:45.06\00:33:49.03 So if John had wanted to express delay, he had a 00:33:49.70\00:33:51.96 Greek word that he could have used to express delay. 00:33:51.99\00:33:55.32 It simply means, "time will be no longer." 00:33:56.18\00:33:58.63 It's not talking about the end of the world 00:33:59.10\00:34:01.03 or the end of probationary time. 00:34:01.06\00:34:02.48 It's talking about prophetic time. 00:34:02.51\00:34:04.66 No more time periods having to do with prophecy, 00:34:05.33\00:34:08.65 in other words. 00:34:08.68\00:34:09.95 Now Ellen White has consistently warned us not to set dates 00:34:10.46\00:34:15.59 and not to establish time. 00:34:16.38\00:34:19.79 Notice this statement on page 17 of your syllabus. 00:34:21.65\00:34:24.62 "Dear brethren, the Lord has shown me that the message 00:34:25.01\00:34:27.46 of the third angel must go and must be proclaimed to the 00:34:27.49\00:34:30.30 scattered children of the Lord, 00:34:30.33\00:34:32.12 and that it should not be hung on time; 00:34:32.91\00:34:34.98 for time never will be a test again. 00:34:35.01\00:34:37.39 I saw that some were getting a false excitement 00:34:38.01\00:34:40.74 arising from preaching time, 00:34:40.77\00:34:42.53 that the third angel's message was stronger than time can be. 00:34:42.84\00:34:46.51 I saw that this message can stand on its own foundation, 00:34:46.94\00:34:49.83 and that it needs not time to strengthen it, 00:34:49.86\00:34:52.57 and that it will go in mighty power, and do its work, 00:34:53.35\00:34:56.16 and will be cut short in righteousness." 00:34:56.19\00:34:58.70 That's in, Review and Herald, July 21, 1851. 00:34:59.60\00:35:02.86 In, Selected Messages, volume 2 page 84, she says, 00:35:03.10\00:35:05.77 "There will always be false and fanatical movements 00:35:05.80\00:35:08.48 made by persons in the church who claim to be led by God; 00:35:08.51\00:35:11.82 those who will run before they are sent, 00:35:11.85\00:35:14.05 and will give a day and date for the occurrence 00:35:14.08\00:35:16.86 of unfulfilled prophecy. 00:35:16.89\00:35:18.41 The enemy is pleased to have them do this, 00:35:18.61\00:35:20.81 for their successive failures and leading into false lines 00:35:20.84\00:35:24.25 cause confusion and unbelief." 00:35:24.28\00:35:26.45 Pretty clear, right? 00:36:11.70\00:36:14.78 It's the first angel's message. 00:36:15.87\00:36:17.70 Thus the prophesying again of verse 11 is directly linked 00:36:19.44\00:36:22.86 with the first angel's message. 00:36:22.89\00:36:24.50 God's end time remnant will make a direct appeal 00:36:24.87\00:36:28.16 for people to worship the Creator. 00:36:28.19\00:36:30.58 This appeal to the Creator in Revelation 10 verse 6 is a 00:36:31.03\00:36:34.68 clear allusion to the fourth commandment of God's law, 00:36:34.71\00:36:37.63 and ultimately to the institution of the Sabbath 00:36:38.06\00:36:41.71 at creation. 00:36:41.74\00:36:43.23 Now let's talk about the mystery of God. 00:36:45.32\00:36:47.21 Is the mystery of God going to be finished shortly before 00:36:48.07\00:36:50.46 the seventh trumpet blows? 00:36:50.49\00:36:52.14 Yes. 00:36:52.72\00:36:53.75 In the seventh trumpet, Jesus takes over the 00:36:53.78\00:36:55.86 kingdoms of the world. 00:36:55.89\00:36:57.17 You're aware of that. 00:36:57.20\00:36:58.23 That's when He empirically takes over the kingdoms of the world. 00:36:58.26\00:37:01.28 But shortly before the seventh trumpet blows, 00:37:01.31\00:37:04.60 when Jesus takes over the kingdom at His coming, 00:37:04.63\00:37:06.99 the mystery of God is finished. 00:37:07.97\00:37:09.52 Now what is the finishing of the mystery of God? 00:37:10.65\00:37:13.15 Well, let's go to the paragraph, the last paragraph on page 17. 00:37:14.99\00:37:20.17 What the text is saying is that the declaration 00:37:20.70\00:37:23.07 that time will be no longer is made during the period of 00:37:23.10\00:37:25.75 the sixth trumpet, but the mystery of God 00:37:25.78\00:37:28.54 will not be finished until the seventh trumpet 00:37:28.57\00:37:30.94 is about to begin to sound. 00:37:30.97\00:37:32.70 So is there a period of time between when time is no longer 00:37:32.73\00:37:36.05 and when the mystery of God is finished? 00:37:36.08\00:37:38.32 Absolutely. 00:37:38.99\00:37:40.14 This clearly shows that the end of prophetic time 00:37:40.37\00:37:43.59 comes during the sixth trumpet and before the seventh. 00:37:43.62\00:37:47.15 Now the question is, what is the mystery of God? 00:37:49.06\00:37:51.49 We're running short on time, so let me just synthesize 00:37:52.54\00:37:57.57 what the mystery is. 00:37:57.60\00:37:59.05 Do you know what the mystery is, the mystery of God? 00:37:59.08\00:38:01.63 It's the preaching of the gospel. 00:38:02.40\00:38:04.22 The gospel is the mystery hidden from ages past. 00:38:05.50\00:38:09.42 You can read it in Romans 16:25-27. 00:38:10.54\00:38:13.62 Ellen White adds her testimony in, Signs of the Times, 00:38:15.28\00:38:18.20 March 25, 1897, where she says that the incarnation 00:38:18.23\00:38:22.90 is a mystery. 00:38:22.93\00:38:24.01 The union of divinity with humanity is a mystery, 00:38:24.81\00:38:28.11 and it was hidden from eternal ages. 00:38:28.70\00:38:30.81 And then she says at the end of this quotation, 00:38:31.56\00:38:34.29 "And this wonderful mystery, the incarnation of Christ 00:38:34.32\00:38:36.90 and the atonement that He made, must be declared 00:38:36.93\00:38:39.10 to every son and daughter of Adam, whether Jew or Gentile." 00:38:39.13\00:38:42.43 So what is the mystery of God? 00:38:44.78\00:38:46.35 The proclamation of the gospel. 00:38:47.29\00:38:49.07 What is going to happen shortly before the 00:38:50.34\00:38:54.27 seventh trumpet sounds? 00:38:54.30\00:38:55.86 The mystery of God is going to be finished. 00:38:57.04\00:38:58.53 What does that mean? 00:38:58.56\00:38:59.75 The preaching of the gospel is going to come to an end. 00:39:00.48\00:39:03.41 Does probation close before the seventh trumpet? 00:39:04.90\00:39:07.46 Yes or no? 00:39:09.06\00:39:10.20 You caught the nuance. 00:40:18.17\00:40:19.73 When probation will close and the mystery of God 00:40:20.33\00:40:22.30 will be finished. 00:40:22.33\00:40:23.53 And what will happen when that takes place? 00:40:24.02\00:40:26.06 "He who is unjust, let him be unjust still; 00:40:26.09\00:40:29.88 he who is filthy, let him be filthy still; 00:40:30.18\00:40:32.47 he who is righteous, let him be righteous still; 00:40:32.98\00:40:35.07 and he who is holy, let him be holy still." 00:40:35.10\00:40:37.54 And then after that declaration is made, 00:40:38.69\00:40:41.77 only then does Jesus say, "And behold, I am coming quickly, 00:40:42.42\00:40:46.03 and My reward is with Me, to give to every one 00:40:46.72\00:40:49.11 according to his work." 00:40:49.14\00:40:50.36 Do you see three points of time there? 00:40:50.39\00:40:52.11 A message is coming from the little book, 00:40:52.78\00:40:54.79 or from the book of Revelation. 00:40:55.09\00:40:56.24 The book is open. 00:40:56.27\00:40:57.40 People can be saved. 00:40:57.43\00:40:58.93 But the time is near when the declaration would be made 00:40:59.47\00:41:02.87 that he who is filthy will still be filthy, 00:41:03.27\00:41:05.47 and he that is holy will still be holy. 00:41:06.05\00:41:08.27 And then after that, Jesus comes to reward His servants; 00:41:09.00\00:41:12.72 which is the seventh trumpet. 00:41:12.75\00:41:14.42 He comes to take over His kingdom 00:41:14.45\00:41:16.26 and give the kingdom to His people. 00:41:16.29\00:41:19.16 Now do we have the same sequence in Daniel chapter 7? 00:41:20.69\00:41:23.53 Of course we do. 00:41:24.22\00:41:25.25 The Ancient of Days goes in heaven, He sits, 00:41:26.34\00:41:31.31 the judgment sits, the books are opened. 00:41:33.23\00:41:35.98 Jesus comes to the Father. 00:41:36.43\00:41:38.22 And what is Jesus given in heaven? 00:41:38.42\00:41:40.34 A kingdom. 00:41:40.54\00:41:41.58 And then it says the time came when He took over the kingdom. 00:41:42.94\00:41:45.87 And He gives the kingdom to His people. 00:41:47.76\00:41:49.73 So you have the three points of time 00:41:50.17\00:41:53.01 in Daniel chapter 7 as well. 00:41:53.04\00:41:55.08 Now, John is a representative person. 00:41:55.81\00:42:00.68 We're going to talk about the eating of the book now. 00:42:00.71\00:42:02.93 These words are from William Shea who was my teacher 00:42:05.34\00:42:08.38 at the seminary many years ago. 00:42:08.41\00:42:10.76 He wrote on Revelation 10. 00:42:11.26\00:42:12.56 And notice what he says. 00:42:12.59\00:42:14.03 "John lived at the beginning of the Christian era 00:42:14.58\00:42:17.66 when he received this vision. 00:42:18.62\00:42:20.53 But the prophetic scene itself looks down toward the 00:42:21.39\00:42:24.60 end of time long after John's death." 00:42:24.63\00:42:27.51 Do you understand that point? 00:42:30.37\00:42:31.54 Would John be alive during the period of the sixth trumpet 00:42:33.09\00:42:35.63 towards the end of human history? 00:42:36.25\00:42:37.81 No. And yet he's told to eat the book. 00:42:38.16\00:42:40.27 It's going to be sweet and then bitter. 00:42:40.81\00:42:42.47 "He should, therefore, be taken as a representative 00:42:43.81\00:42:47.23 of those who will bear the final message. 00:42:47.26\00:42:50.12 The party was acting out under those circumstances. 00:42:51.18\00:42:54.86 It would have been physically impossible for John to have 00:42:55.37\00:42:57.78 born this message to all the groups he was told to address. 00:42:57.81\00:43:02.32 We may look, therefore, for a group or movement 00:43:03.00\00:43:05.30 to fulfill this commission in the end time." 00:43:05.33\00:43:08.54 Is that clear? 00:43:11.41\00:43:12.51 John has to be a representative person. 00:43:13.99\00:43:16.12 Because this is happening during the period of the sixth trumpet 00:43:17.10\00:43:19.40 right before the seventh trumpet when the world ends. 00:43:19.43\00:43:22.30 So how could John, during the period of the sixth trumpet, 00:43:23.37\00:43:27.19 be eating the book if he died in the first century 00:43:27.22\00:43:31.46 or maybe early in the second century? 00:43:31.76\00:43:33.73 He couldn't. 00:43:33.76\00:43:34.79 So he has to be representative of the people of God. 00:43:35.09\00:43:39.86 Now let's notice the chiastic structure of Revelation 10:9-11. 00:43:41.10\00:43:45.09 You remember, I mentioned the order; 00:43:45.12\00:43:46.82 bitter, sweet, and then sweet and bitter? 00:43:47.08\00:43:49.17 Now you're going to see the reason why. 00:43:49.71\00:43:51.32 You see, A-B-C has it's equivalent in C-B-A. 00:43:52.86\00:43:57.39 This is the chiasm. 00:43:57.76\00:43:59.14 In the A line, the angel tells John to take the 00:44:01.14\00:44:04.10 scroll and eat it. 00:44:04.13\00:44:06.92 He's told, "It will be bitter in your stomach." 00:44:08.35\00:44:10.77 That's the B line. 00:44:11.02\00:44:12.15 And the C line says, "In your mouth, it will be..." What? 00:44:13.09\00:44:16.50 Sweet as honey. 00:44:17.55\00:44:19.09 Then you have the C line in reverse order, 00:44:20.94\00:44:23.43 "It tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth." 00:44:23.46\00:44:26.24 B, "It was bitter in my stomach." 00:44:27.81\00:44:30.73 And then, "You must prophecy again." 00:44:32.11\00:44:34.83 So what does it mean, "to eat the scroll"? 00:44:35.97\00:44:38.53 It means, to prophesy again. 00:44:39.08\00:44:40.76 To assimilate it, and then prophesy. 00:44:42.66\00:44:45.08 Are you with me? 00:44:45.60\00:44:46.63 I'm going to prove it to you. 00:44:46.95\00:44:48.29 The chiastic structure is important 00:44:48.82\00:44:51.16 because it shows that John eating the scroll in verse 9A 00:44:51.61\00:44:55.73 is the same as uttering a prophesy from it in verse 11. 00:44:55.76\00:44:59.35 Thus when John ate the scroll, a message came out from it 00:44:59.77\00:45:02.98 the first time. 00:45:03.01\00:45:04.18 But it became necessary for the message to be preached again 00:45:04.73\00:45:07.38 from the same scroll. 00:45:07.41\00:45:08.75 It is very clear that the episode that deals with the 00:45:09.62\00:45:12.88 eating of the book precedes Revelation 10 verse 7 in time. 00:45:12.91\00:45:18.03 Correct? 00:45:18.75\00:45:19.78 Because 10 verse 7, the mystery of God is finished. 00:45:20.44\00:45:22.52 So the eating of the book has to have happened before that. 00:45:22.55\00:45:25.52 How do we know that this is the case? 00:45:26.54\00:45:28.51 The reason is obvious. 00:45:28.54\00:45:30.02 After John eats the little book, he is told to prophesy again 00:45:30.05\00:45:33.34 and to measure the temple. 00:45:33.37\00:45:34.67 If the mystery of God, which is the preaching of the gospel, 00:45:34.70\00:45:37.66 had already been finished and probation had closed, 00:45:37.69\00:45:40.17 what good would it do to prophesy again... 00:45:40.20\00:45:43.16 ...about the contents of the book 00:45:47.24\00:45:49.03 and to talk about the investigative judgment? 00:45:49.58\00:45:51.70 So verses 8 through 11 take us back to events that occurred 00:45:53.51\00:45:57.22 between verses 6 and 7. 00:45:57.25\00:45:58.97 Now sit down and examine this. 00:45:59.07\00:46:01.03 Look at the chart that I mentioned to you. 00:46:01.90\00:46:04.11 The chart. 00:46:04.14\00:46:05.21 Now let's talk about the bitter/sweet experience. 00:46:07.10\00:46:09.47 What is the little book again? 00:46:10.49\00:46:12.87 What does the little book contain? 00:46:14.48\00:46:16.08 It's the prophesy of the what? 00:46:17.01\00:46:18.80 Of the 2300 days. 00:46:19.36\00:46:20.94 When do the 2300 days end? 00:46:21.62\00:46:23.65 October 22, 1844. 00:46:24.32\00:46:25.78 What is the central theme? 00:46:25.81\00:46:27.23 The judgment. 00:46:27.90\00:46:28.98 The content of the little book causes 00:46:30.56\00:46:32.79 a bitter/sweet experience. 00:46:32.82\00:46:34.86 Sweet at first, but then bitter in the aftermath. 00:46:34.91\00:46:38.32 We have already identified the book as the portion of Daniel 00:46:38.94\00:46:41.69 that has to do with the 2300 days and the judgment. 00:46:41.72\00:46:44.21 This must mean that the message of the judgment 00:46:45.06\00:46:47.60 would be sweet at first, and then would become bitter. 00:46:48.14\00:46:51.13 Somehow, the message of the judgment in this little book 00:46:52.18\00:46:55.10 would be sweet, and then it would become what? 00:46:55.85\00:46:58.19 Bitter, because that's what the book contained. 00:46:58.22\00:47:00.37 That the eating of the scroll, this is important, 00:47:01.77\00:47:03.94 that the eating of the scroll means two things. 00:47:03.97\00:47:07.59 First of all, it refers to the assimilation of the message. 00:47:08.26\00:47:11.83 It means, to assimilate the message. 00:47:11.86\00:47:13.60 Secondly, it means to share it with God's people. 00:47:14.36\00:47:17.15 This is corroborated by the closest biblical parallel 00:47:17.96\00:47:21.15 in Ezekiel 3:1-4 where the prophet is told to eat 00:47:21.18\00:47:25.19 the scroll, and then he is ordered to go and share 00:47:25.22\00:47:28.17 the message with Israel. 00:47:28.20\00:47:29.76 Notice Ezekiel 3:1-4. 00:47:30.75\00:47:32.72 "Moreover He said to me, 'Son of man, eat what you find; 00:47:33.64\00:47:37.05 eat this scroll...'" 00:47:37.35\00:47:38.70 So that's assimilating the message, right? 00:47:39.51\00:47:41.49 Eat the scroll, eat the message. 00:47:41.52\00:47:43.07 And then it says, "...and go, speak to the house of Israel." 00:47:43.10\00:47:46.85 Does that fit the chiastic structure? 00:47:48.28\00:47:50.25 He told, "Eat the scroll." 00:47:51.44\00:47:52.86 And then He says, "You must prophesy again." 00:47:53.36\00:47:55.16 So eating the scroll means, eating the scroll 00:47:56.26\00:47:58.15 and sharing the message. 00:47:58.18\00:47:59.39 So it says, "Moreover He said to me, 'Son of man, 00:48:01.54\00:48:03.48 eat what you find; eat this scroll, and go and speak 00:48:03.51\00:48:06.45 to the house of Israel.' 00:48:06.48\00:48:07.51 So I opened my mouth, and He caused me to eat that scroll. 00:48:07.54\00:48:10.25 And He said to me, 'Son of man, feed your belly, 00:48:10.28\00:48:12.59 and fill your stomach with this scroll that I give you.' 00:48:12.62\00:48:15.12 So I ate, and it was in my mouth like honey in sweetness. 00:48:15.15\00:48:18.24 Then He said to me, 'Son of man, go to the house of Israel 00:48:18.27\00:48:21.21 and speak with My words to them.'" 00:48:21.24\00:48:24.08 Is that a helpful passage? 00:48:26.16\00:48:27.53 In Scripture, the words of God are described as being sweet. 00:48:29.73\00:48:32.91 We are told that the manna was sweet like honey. 00:48:34.24\00:48:36.65 And the manna represents the Word of God. 00:48:36.68\00:48:38.62 Now notice what Ellen White had to say 00:48:41.50\00:48:43.46 about the sweetness of the book. 00:48:44.37\00:48:46.72 She says, "The comprehension of the truth, 00:48:47.90\00:48:50.50 the glad reception of the message, 00:48:51.04\00:48:53.44 is represented in the eating of the little book. 00:48:54.05\00:48:56.97 The truth in regard to the time of the advent of our Lord 00:48:57.00\00:49:00.46 was a precious message to our souls." 00:49:00.49\00:49:03.71 But then it became bitter. 00:49:05.78\00:49:07.18 In closing, let me read you a few statements 00:49:08.35\00:49:10.29 from some of the pioneers. 00:49:10.32\00:49:12.15 Hiram Edson. 00:49:13.54\00:49:14.75 You know who Hiram Edson was? 00:49:16.42\00:49:18.01 He's the individual who had the insight that Jesus had moved 00:49:18.96\00:49:22.96 from the Holy to the Most Holy Place 00:49:22.99\00:49:25.00 the day after the disappointment. 00:49:25.18\00:49:26.91 He says, "We confidentially expected to see Jesus Christ 00:49:27.70\00:49:30.75 and all the holy angels with Him, 00:49:30.78\00:49:32.68 and that His voice would call up Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, 00:49:33.28\00:49:36.54 and all the ancient worthies, and dear friends which had 00:49:36.71\00:49:40.36 been torn from us in death, and that our trials and 00:49:40.39\00:49:44.80 sufferings with our earthly pilgrimage would close 00:49:44.83\00:49:47.67 and we should be caught up to meet our coming Lord 00:49:47.70\00:49:50.59 to be forever with Him to inhabit bright golden mansions 00:49:50.62\00:49:53.87 in the golden home city prepared for the redeemed. 00:49:53.90\00:49:57.02 Our expectations were raised high. 00:49:57.60\00:49:59.63 And thus, we looked for our coming Lord until the clock 00:50:00.02\00:50:02.79 tolled twelve at midnight. 00:50:02.82\00:50:04.73 The day had then passed. 00:50:05.51\00:50:06.88 And our disappointment became a certainty. 00:50:07.23\00:50:09.87 Our fondest hopes and expectations were blasted. 00:50:10.34\00:50:13.42 And such a spirit of weeping came over us 00:50:13.68\00:50:16.28 as I never experienced before. 00:50:16.31\00:50:18.51 It seemed that the loss of all earthly friends 00:50:19.01\00:50:22.25 could have been no comparison. 00:50:22.78\00:50:24.90 We wept and wept till the day dawned." 00:50:25.23\00:50:27.78 The people loved the Lord, folks. 00:50:27.93\00:50:29.82 "I mused in my own heart saying, 'My advent experience has been 00:50:30.73\00:50:34.45 the richest and brightest of all my Christian experience. 00:50:34.48\00:50:37.23 If this had proved a failure, what was the rest of my 00:50:37.85\00:50:40.68 Christian experience worth?
