Once again, welcome to Anchor Bible school. 00:00:15.43\00:00:18.69 We're glad you're here. 00:00:18.72\00:00:19.89 This is one of our sessions that is going to 00:00:20.29\00:00:25.00 really, really be exciting, because we're going to 00:00:25.03\00:00:27.12 continue discussing how the Old Testament points to the 00:00:27.15\00:00:31.36 first coming of Jesus, and then we are going to speak about 00:00:31.39\00:00:35.62 how the Old Testament refers to the second coming of Christ. 00:00:35.65\00:00:40.63 And so we have some exciting things to study 00:00:40.87\00:00:43.01 in our class now. 00:00:43.04\00:00:44.24 And I invite you to find the material that is titled, 00:00:44.41\00:00:48.06 "The Sabbath and Redemption." "The Sabbath and Redemption." 00:00:48.09\00:00:51.82 This is a handout that is composed, I believe, 00:00:52.48\00:00:56.08 of about eight pages. 00:00:56.11\00:00:58.11 And we're going to work our way through the document, 00:00:58.44\00:01:00.77 as we have with all of the previous documents. 00:01:00.80\00:01:03.67 I've written it all down so that you're able to follow along, 00:01:03.97\00:01:06.80 and so that you're able to use it in the future. 00:01:07.31\00:01:09.64 Because if I just showed it on the screen, 00:01:09.99\00:01:11.98 you know, that would be nice, but to have it before you 00:01:12.48\00:01:15.70 means that you can use it in the future when you 00:01:15.73\00:01:18.02 share with other people. 00:01:18.05\00:01:19.52 We want to begin by reading a passage that is very well know 00:01:20.10\00:01:24.54 to Seventh-day Adventists. 00:01:24.57\00:01:25.89 Exodus chapter 20 and verses 8 through 11, 00:01:26.67\00:01:29.90 the fourth commandment of God's holy law. 00:01:29.93\00:01:32.37 And I want us to notice three things about this 00:01:33.41\00:01:38.30 passage that we're going to read. 00:01:38.33\00:01:39.61 So let's read it first. 00:01:39.64\00:01:41.13 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 00:01:41.74\00:01:44.57 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 00:01:45.14\00:01:48.48 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. 00:01:48.94\00:01:53.06 In it you shall do no work, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, 00:01:53.60\00:01:58.98 nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, 00:01:59.01\00:02:03.63 nor your stranger who is within your gates." 00:02:03.66\00:02:06.54 And then comes the motivation for keeping the Sabbath, 00:02:06.89\00:02:09.76 the reason, in verse 11. 00:02:09.79\00:02:11.78 "For," that means, because, "in six days the Lord made 00:02:12.03\00:02:16.59 the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, 00:02:16.62\00:02:21.39 and rested the seventh day. 00:02:21.42\00:02:23.38 Therefore, the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it." 00:02:23.59\00:02:28.19 So the first question is, is the Sabbath a shadow 00:02:29.01\00:02:32.81 of things to come? 00:02:32.84\00:02:34.14 The Sabbath is not a shadow of things to come. 00:02:34.80\00:02:37.51 The Sabbath points us back to creation. 00:02:37.96\00:02:41.46 It reminds us of the Creator. 00:02:41.49\00:02:44.09 We also notice that when the Sabbath was created, 00:02:45.35\00:02:48.34 there was no sinner. 00:02:48.37\00:02:50.01 And therefore, when the Sabbath was established originally, 00:02:50.82\00:02:55.43 it had nothing to do with sin. 00:02:55.46\00:02:57.51 Because some people say, "Well, the Sabbath 00:02:57.75\00:02:59.75 simply pointed forward to Jesus Christ to be our rest." 00:02:59.78\00:03:03.74 But in its original function, the Sabbath is not related 00:03:04.15\00:03:08.50 to sin or the plan of salvation. 00:03:08.53\00:03:10.72 We're going to study that, afterwards, the Sabbath 00:03:10.82\00:03:13.90 acquired a secondary function. 00:03:13.93\00:03:16.07 But it's primary function has to do with creation, 00:03:16.48\00:03:20.46 not with redemption. 00:03:20.49\00:03:22.09 And the final point that I want us to notice about this passage 00:03:22.72\00:03:26.00 is that there were no Jews when the Sabbath was established. 00:03:26.09\00:03:30.51 The word, "Jew," comes from, "Judah." 00:03:31.50\00:03:33.42 And that was long after creation. 00:03:33.78\00:03:36.03 And so the Sabbath institution is an institution that goes back 00:03:36.41\00:03:41.05 all the way to creation before any Jew, before sin. 00:03:41.08\00:03:45.67 And therefore the Sabbath, in its original intention, 00:03:45.70\00:03:49.11 is God's plan in a perfect universe, in a perfect world. 00:03:49.66\00:03:56.06 But having said that, I need to emphasize and underline 00:03:56.52\00:04:00.18 that the Sabbath, after sin came in, has a second function. 00:04:00.21\00:04:05.20 A post fall function. 00:04:05.23\00:04:07.96 It's not the original function. 00:04:08.22\00:04:10.05 In fact, the fall function does not eliminate 00:04:10.66\00:04:13.51 the first function, but rather enhances it 00:04:13.54\00:04:16.74 and makes it even more meaningful. 00:04:16.77\00:04:18.72 Now what is the post fall function of the Sabbath? 00:04:19.19\00:04:22.32 Let's go to Deuteronomy chapter 5 00:04:22.52\00:04:25.10 and verses 12 through 15. 00:04:25.13\00:04:26.83 Deuteronomy chapter 5 verses 12 through 15. 00:04:26.99\00:04:30.03 In this passage, the fourth commandment is repeated again. 00:04:30.36\00:04:34.48 But there is a difference in the book of Deuteronomy 00:04:34.79\00:04:39.59 with the commandment that is found in Exodus chapter 20. 00:04:39.88\00:04:43.04 Notice Deuteronomy 5 and beginning with verse 12. 00:04:43.34\00:04:47.25 "Observe the Sabbath day to keep it holy, 00:04:47.81\00:04:50.41 as the Lord God commanded you. 00:04:50.78\00:04:52.93 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 00:04:53.28\00:04:56.62 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God." 00:04:56.91\00:05:00.06 Very similar to Exodus 20. 00:05:00.09\00:05:01.84 "In it you shall not do any work, you nor your son, 00:05:02.30\00:05:05.55 nor your daughter, nor your man servant, 00:05:05.58\00:05:07.68 nor your maid servant, nor your ox, nor your donkey, 00:05:07.71\00:05:10.63 nor any of your cattle, nor your stranger who is within 00:05:10.66\00:05:14.56 your gates; that your man servant and your maid servant 00:05:14.59\00:05:17.93 may rest as well as you." 00:05:17.96\00:05:20.42 So very similar to the commandment in Exodus 20. 00:05:20.45\00:05:22.96 But now comes the difference. 00:05:22.99\00:05:24.47 It continues saying, "And remember 00:05:25.03\00:05:27.13 that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, 00:05:27.43\00:05:30.57 and that the Lord your God brought you out from there 00:05:30.77\00:05:34.92 by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm. 00:05:35.12\00:05:38.63 Therefore, the Lord your God commanded you to keep 00:05:38.82\00:05:42.92 the Sabbath day." 00:05:42.95\00:05:44.37 So do you see that the Sabbath has a second function? 00:05:45.29\00:05:48.26 It has a function of reminding Israel 00:05:48.60\00:05:51.41 of their deliverance from bondage. 00:05:51.44\00:05:54.29 Now the question is, have we been delivered from bondage? 00:05:54.32\00:05:58.17 From bondage to sin? 00:05:58.27\00:05:59.70 Absolutely. 00:05:59.73\00:06:00.79 Is the Sabbath a sign of our deliverance 00:06:00.82\00:06:03.63 from the bondage of sin? 00:06:03.66\00:06:05.19 Absolutely. 00:06:05.22\00:06:06.25 You see, the second function of the Sabbath 00:06:06.44\00:06:08.97 does not eliminate the first. 00:06:09.00\00:06:10.87 It gives us an additional reason to keep the Sabbath. 00:06:11.00\00:06:14.65 Are you following me or not? 00:06:14.68\00:06:16.02 Now, we're going to study one particular verse 00:06:16.34\00:06:21.33 that we find in the Old Testament. 00:06:21.36\00:06:22.67 Of course, there will be other verses related to that one. 00:06:22.70\00:06:25.19 But there's one particular verse that we want to take a look at. 00:06:25.22\00:06:28.69 And that verse is Deuteronomy chapter 8 verse 3. 00:06:29.07\00:06:31.97 But before we notice that, I want to read John 5:39 00:06:32.00\00:06:36.99 and then verses 46 and 47. 00:06:37.09\00:06:39.30 We read these in a previous class, but let's read them again 00:06:39.33\00:06:41.94 to see who is the center of the writings of Moses. 00:06:41.97\00:06:45.46 It says there in verse 39, Jesus is speaking to the Jews, 00:06:45.83\00:06:49.00 "You search the Scriptures, for in them you think 00:06:49.42\00:06:52.82 you have eternal life. 00:06:52.85\00:06:54.19 And these are they which testify of Me." 00:06:54.22\00:06:56.99 So the Scriptures of the Old Testament testify to Jesus. 00:06:57.09\00:07:01.20 And then Jesus says, "But you are not willing to come to Me 00:07:01.36\00:07:04.43 that you may have life." 00:07:04.46\00:07:05.94 And then jumping down to verse 46, "Do not think 00:07:06.14\00:07:09.59 that I shall accuse you to the Father. 00:07:09.62\00:07:11.83 There is one who accuses you; Moses, in whom you trust. 00:07:12.10\00:07:16.34 For if you believe Moses, you would believe Me; 00:07:16.37\00:07:20.20 for he wrote about Me." 00:07:20.30\00:07:24.15 So who is at the center of the writings of Moses? 00:07:24.93\00:07:27.85 Jesus Christ is at the center of Moses. 00:07:28.47\00:07:31.42 In fact, Jesus says that Moses gives witness to Him. 00:07:31.76\00:07:36.75 Everything in the writings of Moses is centered 00:07:37.06\00:07:40.15 in Jesus Christ. 00:07:40.18\00:07:42.28 Now as I mentioned, you can read that other text 00:07:42.52\00:07:45.16 that we have here. 00:07:45.19\00:07:46.29 It's found in Luke 24:25-27, and then verses 44 and 45. 00:07:47.32\00:07:52.98 We referred to those in one of our previous classes. 00:07:53.01\00:07:56.49 But now I want us to notice what we find in 00:07:56.59\00:07:59.52 Deuteronomy chapter 8 and verse 3. 00:07:59.55\00:08:01.39 The primary verse of our study. 00:08:01.42\00:08:03.43 Of course, other verses will be connected with this one. 00:08:03.53\00:08:06.21 Deuteronomy 8 and verse 3 is speaking about 00:08:07.42\00:08:10.80 the manna that fell from heaven. 00:08:11.00\00:08:13.08 Now you remember that Israel was in the wilderness. 00:08:13.43\00:08:16.03 And of course, they did not stay in one place very long. 00:08:16.06\00:08:19.56 So they did not grow any crops. 00:08:19.71\00:08:21.60 So God had to feed them miraculously. 00:08:21.70\00:08:24.12 And the way that God fed them was by sending 00:08:24.15\00:08:27.06 manna from heaven that had all of the necessary nutrients 00:08:27.09\00:08:31.08 to sustain their physical life. 00:08:31.11\00:08:33.86 But did God give the manna primarily to 00:08:34.10\00:08:37.14 sustain them physically? 00:08:37.17\00:08:38.72 Well let's notice what Deuteronomy 8 00:08:38.97\00:08:41.04 and verse 3 has to say. 00:08:41.07\00:08:42.78 Here, Moses is reminiscing about the manna episode, 00:08:43.51\00:08:47.10 and he says, "So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, 00:08:47.13\00:08:52.91 and fed you with manna which you did not know 00:08:53.44\00:08:57.37 nor did your father's know..." 00:08:57.54\00:08:59.83 Now why did God give the manna? 00:09:00.85\00:09:02.59 Notice the explanation that is given in the last 00:09:03.24\00:09:05.98 half of the verse. 00:09:06.01\00:09:07.32 He gave the manna, "...that He might make you know 00:09:07.62\00:09:12.53 that man shall not live by bread alone, 00:09:12.90\00:09:16.70 but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." 00:09:16.73\00:09:21.62 What was the purpose of the manna? 00:09:22.24\00:09:23.76 Yes, to sustain them physically. 00:09:23.79\00:09:25.63 But it was more than physical food, because we read 00:09:25.73\00:09:28.03 that it was spiritual food. 00:09:28.06\00:09:29.17 Remember 1 Corinthians chapter 10? 00:09:29.20\00:09:30.83 He gave them spiritual food. 00:09:31.26\00:09:33.02 So the manna was real food, it met physical needs, 00:09:33.05\00:09:36.84 but it was spiritual food in the sense that the manna 00:09:37.04\00:09:40.22 represented what? 00:09:40.25\00:09:41.59 The word of God. 00:09:42.12\00:09:43.33 "Man shall not live by bread alone, 00:09:43.53\00:09:45.83 but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God." 00:09:45.96\00:09:49.22 The manna represents God's word. 00:09:49.25\00:09:52.30 So we need to ask the question, who is God's word? 00:09:52.33\00:09:56.55 Well let's go to John chapter 1 verses 1 to 3. 00:09:57.32\00:10:00.02 John chapter 1 verses 1 through 3. 00:10:00.64\00:10:03.35 Very well known passage. 00:10:03.73\00:10:05.61 We could probably recite it from memory. 00:10:05.64\00:10:07.80 It says there, "In the beginning was the Word, 00:10:08.08\00:10:10.95 and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 00:10:11.97\00:10:16.48 He was in the beginning with God. 00:10:16.94\00:10:19.55 All things were made through Him, and without Him 00:10:19.95\00:10:23.59 nothing was made that was made." 00:10:23.62\00:10:26.17 And of course, who is that Word? 00:10:26.20\00:10:28.01 If you go down to verse 14, it says, "The Word was made flesh, 00:10:28.23\00:10:33.11 and dwelt among us." 00:10:33.14\00:10:34.83 So the Word is Jesus Christ. 00:10:34.86\00:10:37.62 So what does the manna represent? 00:10:37.97\00:10:40.21 It represents the Word of God. 00:10:40.31\00:10:42.14 And the Word of God is symbolic of Jesus. 00:10:42.17\00:10:46.68 Now notice this interesting statement from Ellen White 00:10:46.71\00:10:49.21 that comes from the devotional book, That I May Know Him, 00:10:49.24\00:10:52.36 page 38. 00:10:52.39\00:10:53.85 I love this statement. 00:10:53.95\00:10:55.39 She says, "What speech is to thought..." 00:10:56.58\00:10:59.03 See, we think, and then we what? 00:11:00.14\00:11:02.32 I would hope so. 00:11:03.04\00:11:04.37 Sometimes we speak and then we think. 00:11:05.01\00:11:07.40 But really, we should think and then speak. 00:11:08.41\00:11:10.85 So it says, "What speech is to thought, 00:11:10.88\00:11:13.16 so is Christ to the invisible Father." 00:11:13.27\00:11:16.24 Do you realize what she's saying? 00:11:16.27\00:11:17.65 She's saying that the Father thinks, 00:11:17.90\00:11:19.82 and Jesus utters the thoughts of God. 00:11:19.85\00:11:22.55 That's an amazing thought. 00:11:23.53\00:11:25.10 That's why Jesus is the Word of God. 00:11:25.13\00:11:27.21 The Father thinks, and Jesus expresses it audibly 00:11:27.24\00:11:31.10 so that we can hear it and so that we can read it. 00:11:31.44\00:11:34.00 And then Ellen White continues saying, 00:11:34.38\00:11:36.46 "He is the manifestation of the Father, and is called..." What? 00:11:36.49\00:11:41.38 "...is called the Word of God." 00:11:41.55\00:11:44.17 Jesus is the Word of God. 00:11:44.20\00:11:46.17 So the manna represents Jesus. 00:11:47.75\00:11:51.14 Now let's go to 1 Corinthians chapter 10 verses 1 through 4 00:11:51.56\00:11:54.91 which underlines the same truth. 00:11:55.36\00:11:57.61 We're going to read several text. 00:11:57.64\00:11:59.04 How do you suppose I found all these text? 00:11:59.07\00:12:00.97 Ah, sola scriptura. 00:12:02.96\00:12:05.20 Reading other verses that speak about bread 00:12:05.77\00:12:08.42 and speak about the manna. 00:12:08.45\00:12:09.55 The same subject, the same theme. 00:12:09.58\00:12:12.10 I hope that becomes a principle second nature to us. 00:12:12.13\00:12:17.06 Notice what we find in 1 Corinthians 10 verse 1. 00:12:17.32\00:12:20.91 Paul is reminiscing about some of the experiences 00:12:21.36\00:12:24.01 in the pilgrimage of Israel. 00:12:24.04\00:12:25.56 And it says there, "Moreover, brethren, I do not 00:12:25.91\00:12:28.90 want you to be unaware that all our fathers were 00:12:28.93\00:12:32.30 under the cloud, all passed through the sea; 00:12:32.33\00:12:35.48 all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 00:12:35.51\00:12:40.35 all ate the same..." What? 00:12:40.45\00:12:43.47 "...spiritual food and all drank the same spiritual drink; 00:12:43.70\00:12:50.58 for they drank of that spiritual Rock; 00:12:50.73\00:12:54.63 and the Rock was Christ." 00:12:54.99\00:12:58.40 What does the manna represent? 00:13:00.26\00:13:01.68 Christ. 00:13:02.55\00:13:03.63 What does the rock represent? 00:13:03.77\00:13:05.27 Christ. 00:13:05.80\00:13:06.83 What does the water represent? 00:13:06.86\00:13:08.53 Ah, I threw you a curve. 00:13:09.63\00:13:11.45 A knuckle ball. 00:13:12.62\00:13:14.00 The water represents the Holy Spirit that Jesus sends. 00:13:14.60\00:13:18.93 So it is still Christ centered. 00:13:19.29\00:13:21.04 So the water is spiritual, the rock is spiritual, 00:13:22.25\00:13:25.09 and the manna is spiritual. 00:13:25.12\00:13:26.70 See, we're not only dealing with literal in the Old Testament. 00:13:26.73\00:13:30.48 What is literal in the Old Testament in the period 00:13:30.51\00:13:33.45 of the church becomes spiritual. 00:13:33.48\00:13:36.38 Tomorrow we're going to study that principle. 00:13:36.95\00:13:38.90 We're going to illustrate it. 00:13:38.93\00:13:40.08 It's vitally important. 00:13:40.18\00:13:41.62 Now let's go to John chapter 6 and verses 48 through 50 00:13:42.46\00:13:46.84 where this becomes explicit that the manna 00:13:46.94\00:13:49.75 represents Christ. 00:13:49.78\00:13:51.32 John chapter 6 and verses 48 through 50. 00:13:51.60\00:13:56.23 There's no doubt whatsoever now about what 00:13:56.33\00:13:58.22 the manna represents. 00:13:58.25\00:13:59.57 Jesus is speaking and He says, "I am the bread of life. 00:14:00.37\00:14:05.50 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, 00:14:06.38\00:14:09.50 and are dead. 00:14:09.53\00:14:10.67 This is the bread which comes down from heaven 00:14:10.97\00:14:13.74 that one may eat of it and not die." 00:14:13.92\00:14:16.93 So what is the manna, according to Jesus? 00:14:17.33\00:14:19.88 He is the living manna that came down from heaven 00:14:20.15\00:14:23.48 to speak the words of God. 00:14:23.51\00:14:25.46 He is the Word of God. 00:14:25.49\00:14:27.74 But there's something else. 00:14:28.65\00:14:30.24 I want you to notice that the manna represents 00:14:30.64\00:14:33.07 something specific about Jesus. 00:14:33.10\00:14:35.25 Not only does the manna represent Jesus 00:14:35.53\00:14:38.02 in general terms, there's something specific about 00:14:38.05\00:14:41.59 Jesus that is represented by the manna. 00:14:41.62\00:14:43.61 Now what is represented specifically about Jesus? 00:14:43.64\00:14:47.22 Notice John chapter 6 and verse 51. 00:14:47.66\00:14:52.72 John 6 verse 51. 00:14:52.75\00:14:54.92 Here Jesus says, "I am the living bread 00:14:55.20\00:14:58.46 which came down from heaven. 00:14:58.57\00:15:00.44 If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. 00:15:00.85\00:15:04.14 And the bread that I shall give is..." What? 00:15:04.51\00:15:08.22 "...is My flesh which I shall give for the life of the world." 00:15:08.54\00:15:12.64 What does the manna represent specifically about Jesus? 00:15:13.00\00:15:17.17 It represents His flesh, which is a very important detail. 00:15:17.34\00:15:22.95 It represents His flesh. 00:15:22.98\00:15:25.36 Now why is that significant? 00:15:26.06\00:15:27.67 Why is that important? 00:15:27.70\00:15:29.07 Well, in order to understand the reason why this is important, 00:15:29.45\00:15:32.68 we need to go back to the chapter that speaks 00:15:33.20\00:15:35.70 about the manna. 00:15:35.73\00:15:36.85 Wouldn't that be a good idea? 00:15:36.88\00:15:38.28 Well let's go back to Exodus chapter 16. 00:15:38.77\00:15:41.76 Exodus chapter 16 and we'll read verses 19 and 20. 00:15:41.79\00:15:45.97 Exodus 16:19-20 00:15:46.07\00:15:49.23 What happened when Israel went out and picked up manna, 00:15:49.73\00:15:54.16 say, Wednesday for Thursday? 00:15:54.19\00:15:56.74 It spoiled. 00:15:58.68\00:15:59.71 Two things happened to it. 00:16:00.56\00:16:02.04 It bred worms and it stank. 00:16:02.48\00:16:05.03 Let's read about it. 00:16:05.06\00:16:06.23 Exodus 16 verse 19. 00:16:06.40\00:16:08.71 "And Moses said, 'Let no one leave any of it until morning.' 00:16:09.47\00:16:15.03 Notwithstanding, they did not heed Moses, 00:16:15.50\00:16:18.24 but some of them left part of it until morning. 00:16:18.34\00:16:21.64 And it bred worms and stank. 00:16:21.98\00:16:25.69 And Moses was angry with them." 00:16:25.72\00:16:28.84 Two things happened to this bread if it was saved 00:16:29.79\00:16:32.50 from one day to the next. 00:16:32.53\00:16:34.14 And that is, it bred worms and it stank. 00:16:34.34\00:16:37.17 Now was this common ordinary bread? 00:16:37.43\00:16:39.50 Let's suppose that you go to the supermarket 00:16:40.24\00:16:42.11 and you buy a loaf of bread. 00:16:42.14\00:16:43.39 And you don't eat it today, you eat it tomorrow. 00:16:44.18\00:16:46.01 When you open the package, it has worms and it stinks, right? 00:16:46.04\00:16:48.94 Of course not. 00:16:49.80\00:16:50.88 Well let's suppose that you leave the bread a week 00:16:51.24\00:16:53.22 and you don't use it. 00:16:53.25\00:16:54.44 And you open up the package, and it's bred worms and it stinks. 00:16:54.72\00:16:58.35 No. How about a month later? 00:16:58.60\00:17:01.76 It might be moldy. 00:17:01.92\00:17:03.41 But it doesn't breed worms and stink. 00:17:04.26\00:17:06.51 What is it that breeds worms and stinks? 00:17:06.98\00:17:10.01 A decomposing body, decomposing flesh. 00:17:10.42\00:17:14.15 And what does the manna represent? 00:17:14.18\00:17:16.12 The flesh of Jesus Christ. 00:17:16.22\00:17:18.49 You see, what happens many times is we take passages 00:17:18.68\00:17:23.45 and we repeat the same lesson over and over again. 00:17:23.48\00:17:26.28 You know, I was always taught, and I believe it's correct, 00:17:26.31\00:17:29.23 that the purpose why God gave the manna 00:17:29.65\00:17:31.67 was to teach us that we're suppose to keep the Sabbath. 00:17:31.82\00:17:34.65 There was no manna on the Sabbath; 00:17:34.68\00:17:36.10 they were suppose to keep the Sabbath. 00:17:36.13\00:17:37.75 But there's a deeper reason than just keeping the Sabbath. 00:17:37.93\00:17:41.53 There has to be a Christ centered reason 00:17:42.00\00:17:45.10 for keeping the Sabbath. 00:17:45.13\00:17:46.20 In the manna episode, there has to be something about 00:17:46.23\00:17:49.05 Christ in this passage. 00:17:49.08\00:17:50.76 There has to be a Christ centered motivation 00:17:50.90\00:17:53.53 for keeping the Sabbath. 00:17:53.56\00:17:54.71 Are you following me or not? 00:17:54.74\00:17:56.17 Now, let's see what Exodus 16:19-20 says. 00:17:56.54\00:18:01.30 So it says, "And Moses said, 00:18:01.33\00:18:03.47 'Let no one leave any of it until the morning.' 00:18:03.50\00:18:05.77 Notwithstanding, they did not heed Moses, 00:18:05.80\00:18:07.88 but some of them left part of it until morning. 00:18:07.91\00:18:10.24 And it bred worms and stank. 00:18:10.27\00:18:12.18 And Moses was angry with them." 00:18:12.21\00:18:14.58 Now what happened when they picked up manna on Friday 00:18:15.10\00:18:17.81 and they saved it for Sabbath?" 00:18:17.84\00:18:19.33 It was just as fresh on Sabbath as it had been on Friday. 00:18:19.92\00:18:24.57 Now let's read that in Exodus chapter 16 00:18:25.20\00:18:28.02 and verses 23 and 24. 00:18:28.12\00:18:30.65 Exodus 16:23-24 00:18:30.68\00:18:33.27 Here Moses is speaking to the people. 00:18:34.16\00:18:36.20 "Then he said to them, 'This is what the Lord has said, 00:18:36.72\00:18:40.96 "Tomorrow is a Sabbath rest, 00:18:41.19\00:18:43.71 a holy Sabbath unto the Jews."'" 00:18:43.82\00:18:46.39 Are you awake out there? 00:18:48.57\00:18:49.75 Oh okay, I'm just trying to make a point. 00:18:50.39\00:18:52.69 "...a holy Sabbath unto the Lord. 00:18:53.16\00:18:56.77 Bake what you will bake today, and boil what you will boil, 00:18:57.10\00:19:00.39 and lay up for yourselves all that remains 00:19:00.62\00:19:03.52 to be kept until the morning." 00:19:03.55\00:19:05.07 So, to be kept until the Sabbath. 00:19:05.45\00:19:07.14 "So they laid it up till morning as Moses commanded, 00:19:07.49\00:19:11.71 and it did not stink nor were there any worms in it." 00:19:11.74\00:19:19.53 Interesting. 00:19:20.30\00:19:21.63 Why did it breed worms and stink any day except the Sabbath, 00:19:23.66\00:19:28.65 whereas the Sabbath it did not breed worms and stink? 00:19:28.81\00:19:32.19 The answer is, we have to go to the gospels to find out why. 00:19:32.29\00:19:36.48 Because that's where this manna episode 00:19:37.27\00:19:40.07 is fulfilled in Jesus Christ. 00:19:40.10\00:19:42.53 So let's examine the last three declarations 00:19:42.83\00:19:47.35 of Jesus on the cross. 00:19:47.38\00:19:48.59 You know He spoke seven words from the cross. 00:19:48.62\00:19:51.09 We're going to take a look at the last three 00:19:51.19\00:19:53.64 of the declarations of Jesus on the cross 00:19:53.74\00:19:55.87 to try and understand why it is important 00:19:56.09\00:19:59.10 that the manna did not breed worms and stink 00:19:59.13\00:20:01.75 when it was kept for the Sabbath. 00:20:01.78\00:20:03.69 The first declaration... 00:20:03.96\00:20:05.23 Actually, this is not the first of His declarations, 00:20:05.26\00:20:08.74 but the first that we're going to take a look at. 00:20:08.77\00:20:10.65 Matthew 27 and verse 46. 00:20:10.68\00:20:13.74 This is declaration number five that Jesus made from the cross. 00:20:14.08\00:20:17.97 It says, "And about the ninth hour..." 00:20:19.27\00:20:21.90 Was it the ninth hour yet? 00:20:21.93\00:20:24.07 No. What hour is the ninth hour? 00:20:24.88\00:20:27.09 Three o'clock in the afternoon. 00:20:28.20\00:20:29.80 So it says, "And about the ninth hour, 00:20:30.87\00:20:33.11 Jesus cried out with a loud voice saying, 00:20:33.48\00:20:36.21 'Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?' 00:20:36.24\00:20:38.34 That is, 'My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?'" 00:20:38.52\00:20:41.76 Those words were spoken slightly before the ninth hour, 00:20:41.79\00:20:46.12 slightly before three o'clock in the afternoon. 00:20:46.15\00:20:48.40 Now let's take a look at the sixth declaration, 00:20:49.22\00:20:51.48 the next to last declaration of Jesus from the cross. 00:20:51.51\00:20:54.68 It's found in John chapter 19 and verse 30 00:20:54.89\00:20:57.82 where Jesus is speaking, and it says, 00:20:58.14\00:21:01.45 "So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, 00:21:01.48\00:21:04.78 'It is finished.' 00:21:04.81\00:21:07.19 And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit." 00:21:07.22\00:21:09.94 Now each gospel writer has a particular emphasis. 00:21:10.33\00:21:13.37 There was actually a last saying that Jesus made from the cross, 00:21:13.69\00:21:17.63 and it's not mentioned in John. 00:21:17.66\00:21:19.49 And so we have to go to the last saying 00:21:20.06\00:21:22.76 as it is found in the gospel of Luke chapter 23 and verse 46. 00:21:22.79\00:21:29.94 This is the last declaration of Jesus from the cross. 00:21:30.00\00:21:33.90 And you'll notice there that Jesus says 00:21:34.22\00:21:37.52 something very significant. 00:21:37.55\00:21:39.07 "And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, 00:21:39.40\00:21:42.71 He said, 'Father, into Your hands I commend My spirit.' 00:21:42.88\00:21:48.36 And having said this, He..." What? 00:21:48.60\00:21:51.28 "...He breathed His last." 00:21:51.31\00:21:54.07 And Jesus died. 00:21:54.54\00:21:55.71 So when Jesus says from the cross, "My God, My God, 00:21:56.14\00:22:00.50 why have You forsaken Me," it's about the ninth hour. 00:22:00.53\00:22:03.62 It's almost three o'clock in the afternoon. 00:22:03.65\00:22:05.90 When Jesus says, "It is finished," 00:22:06.36\00:22:08.77 it's still close to three o'clock in the afternoon. 00:22:09.57\00:22:12.59 But a lot closer. 00:22:13.00\00:22:14.32 And when Jesus says, "Father, into Your hands 00:22:14.52\00:22:17.23 I commend My spirit," He said this 00:22:17.26\00:22:19.47 at three o'clock in the afternoon. 00:22:19.67\00:22:21.10 And you say, "How do you know that?" 00:22:21.13\00:22:22.81 Well, we have to go back to the Passover celebration 00:22:23.84\00:22:27.24 in the Old Testament. 00:22:27.27\00:22:28.48 And so go with me to Exodus chapter 12 and verse 6 00:22:28.70\00:22:32.80 where we find exactly at what time the Passover 00:22:32.90\00:22:36.76 lamb was sacrificed. 00:22:36.79\00:22:38.21 Is Jesus the Passover Lamb, symbolically speaking? 00:22:38.24\00:22:41.34 Yes, the apostle Paul says in 1 Corinthians 5:7-8 00:22:41.77\00:22:45.11 that Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed for us. 00:22:45.14\00:22:48.86 So the Passover celebration is fulfilled in Jesus. 00:22:48.96\00:22:52.41 So if the Passover lamb was sacrificed at a certain hour, 00:22:52.59\00:22:56.08 we would expect that Jesus died at that same hour. 00:22:56.24\00:22:59.20 Correct? 00:22:59.23\00:23:00.26 Now notice Exodus 12 and verse 6. 00:23:00.29\00:23:03.72 I'm reading from the New King James. 00:23:04.51\00:23:06.33 And it says, "Now you shall keep it," that is the lamb, 00:23:06.43\00:23:09.63 "until the fourteenth day of the same month." 00:23:09.81\00:23:12.56 That's the month of Nisan. 00:23:12.59\00:23:14.00 "Then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel 00:23:14.50\00:23:17.63 shall kill it at twilight." 00:23:17.66\00:23:20.21 Now that sounds kind of scary, doesn't it. 00:23:21.15\00:23:25.49 At twilight. 00:23:25.52\00:23:26.79 Actually, the Hebrew doesn't say, "twilight." 00:23:27.10\00:23:30.10 Literally the Hebrew says that the Passover lamb 00:23:30.52\00:23:34.82 should be sacrificed between the two evenings. 00:23:34.85\00:23:38.72 That's what the Hebrew says. 00:23:39.64\00:23:41.21 That the lamb was sacrificed between the two evenings. 00:23:41.24\00:23:45.21 And you say, "Now wait a minute. 00:23:45.24\00:23:46.53 What does that mean, between the two evenings?" 00:23:46.73\00:23:48.97 As Adventists, we know one of those evenings 00:23:49.00\00:23:51.49 is when the sun sets, right? 00:23:51.52\00:23:52.84 "From even to even shall you keep your Sabbath." 00:23:52.87\00:23:55.56 But what is the other evening? 00:23:56.00\00:23:57.89 Well, the fact is that according to the Jews, 00:23:58.20\00:24:01.60 when the sun began to descend from its meridian, 00:24:01.71\00:24:05.36 in other words, from being directly overhead, 00:24:05.47\00:24:07.75 it was the first evening. 00:24:08.13\00:24:09.79 And then when the sun set on the horizon, 00:24:10.47\00:24:13.18 it was the second evening. 00:24:13.38\00:24:15.70 In other words, noon, afternoon would be the first evening, 00:24:16.28\00:24:21.87 and when the sun sets is the second evening. 00:24:21.97\00:24:24.94 I want to read you a quotation that we find 00:24:25.41\00:24:28.60 from Adam Clark's commentary where he explains this. 00:24:28.63\00:24:32.87 He says, "The Jews divided the day into morning and evening 00:24:33.52\00:24:36.97 till the sun passed the meridian. 00:24:37.51\00:24:39.80 All was morning or afternoon. 00:24:40.08\00:24:42.32 After that, all was afternoon or evening. 00:24:42.67\00:24:45.43 Their first evening began just after twelve o'clock 00:24:45.92\00:24:48.96 and continued till sunset. 00:24:48.99\00:24:50.67 The second evening began at sunset and continued till night 00:24:50.91\00:24:54.75 during the whole time of twilight. 00:24:55.04\00:24:57.01 Between twelve o'clock, therefore, and the 00:24:57.04\00:24:58.94 termination of twilight, the Passover was to be offered. 00:24:58.97\00:25:02.48 The day, among the Jews, had twelve hours. 00:25:02.83\00:25:05.11 The first hour was about six o'clock in the morning with us. 00:25:05.21\00:25:08.56 The sixth hour was our noon. 00:25:08.59\00:25:10.46 The ninth hour answered to our three o'clock in the afternoon. 00:25:10.49\00:25:13.64 By this we may understand that the time in which 00:25:13.89\00:25:16.37 Christ was crucified began at the third hour, 00:25:16.40\00:25:19.01 that is at nine o'clock in the morning, 00:25:19.67\00:25:21.67 the ordinary time for the daily morning sacrifice, 00:25:21.87\00:25:25.09 and ended at the ninth hour, that is the three o'clock 00:25:25.12\00:25:28.26 in the afternoon, the time of the evening sacrifice. 00:25:28.29\00:25:31.60 Wherefore, their ninth hour was their hour of prayer 00:25:32.02\00:25:36.01 when they used to go into the temple at the 00:25:36.22\00:25:38.85 daily evening sacrifice. 00:25:38.88\00:25:41.11 And this was the ordinary time for the Passover. 00:25:41.14\00:25:44.06 It is worthy of remark that God sets no particular hour 00:25:44.26\00:25:48.19 for the killing of the Passover. 00:25:48.40\00:25:50.12 Any time between the two evenings, between twelve o'clock 00:25:50.15\00:25:53.39 in the day and termination of twilight, was lawful." 00:25:53.42\00:25:56.36 Except that the Bible clearly says that He died 00:25:56.46\00:25:59.44 at the ninth hour. 00:25:59.47\00:26:01.02 So the Bible is more specific on this point. 00:26:02.40\00:26:04.90 It wasn't any time between noon and six o'clock. 00:26:04.93\00:26:07.81 Jesus died right square in the middle, at the ninth hour. 00:26:07.84\00:26:11.37 Now, so what is this saying to us? 00:26:12.21\00:26:18.15 What it's saying is that Jesus died on a Friday afternoon. 00:26:18.34\00:26:22.41 At what time? 00:26:22.44\00:26:23.60 He died on a Friday afternoon at three o'clock in the afternoon. 00:26:24.15\00:26:29.32 At the time when the Passover lamb was sacrificed. 00:26:30.31\00:26:32.82 And you know, there's something interesting, 00:26:32.85\00:26:34.18 maybe as a side light, that I'll share with you. 00:26:34.21\00:26:36.25 You know, we take the prophecy of the 70 weeks, 00:26:37.30\00:26:40.71 where it says that in the middle of the week 00:26:41.02\00:26:43.07 He would make the sacrifice and the oblation to cease. 00:26:43.10\00:26:46.40 And basically, what we've said is that it means that 00:26:47.19\00:26:51.16 even though they continued the sacrifices after that, 00:26:51.19\00:26:54.01 they didn't have any meaning. 00:26:54.21\00:26:55.80 But do you know that was literally fulfilled that day? 00:26:56.02\00:26:58.92 The sacrifice and the oblation ceased. 00:27:00.26\00:27:02.26 And you say, "How's that?" 00:27:02.29\00:27:03.54 You read, Desire Of Ages, Ellen White clearly states 00:27:03.87\00:27:06.94 that the priest had the knife in his hand, 00:27:07.35\00:27:09.89 and he was about to slay the lamb. 00:27:10.35\00:27:12.34 And then the earth shook. 00:27:13.07\00:27:14.53 And the veil of the temple was ripped from top to bottom. 00:27:15.22\00:27:17.77 And the lamb escaped. 00:27:18.12\00:27:19.84 Because the true Lamb of God, who takes away the sin 00:27:20.33\00:27:23.16 of the world, had died at that very moment. 00:27:23.19\00:27:26.32 Isn't that amazing? 00:27:26.42\00:27:27.55 So the sacrifice and oblation did cease 00:27:27.58\00:27:30.79 in the middle of the week. 00:27:30.82\00:27:32.10 Of course, the Jews afterwards started sacrificing again. 00:27:32.39\00:27:35.27 But the symbolism clearly pointed to the fact 00:27:35.37\00:27:38.22 if the lamb escaped, "Hey folks, the Lamb has died. 00:27:38.25\00:27:41.82 No more sacrifices of lambs." 00:27:41.85\00:27:44.29 Now, when was salvation finished then? 00:27:45.09\00:27:48.34 Salvation was finished when Jesus said on the cross, 00:27:48.89\00:27:52.46 "It is finished. 00:27:52.49\00:27:53.84 Into Your hands I commend My spirit." 00:27:53.87\00:27:55.62 And you say, "How could you say that salvation was finished?" 00:27:55.65\00:27:58.31 Listen, provision for salvation was finished 00:27:58.34\00:28:01.07 when Jesus died on the cross. 00:28:01.10\00:28:02.54 The provision was made. 00:28:02.91\00:28:04.41 There was now a perfect life that could cover 00:28:04.98\00:28:08.63 our imperfect life. 00:28:08.66\00:28:10.03 And there is now a death for sin that can count as our death. 00:28:10.27\00:28:14.06 The provision for salvation was complete. 00:28:14.16\00:28:16.69 The thing that was still lacking was who was going to benefit 00:28:16.89\00:28:21.19 from what Jesus did. 00:28:21.22\00:28:22.55 That's the work that He continues 00:28:22.69\00:28:24.45 performing in the sanctuary. 00:28:24.48\00:28:25.78 He's applying the benefits of His atonement. 00:28:25.81\00:28:28.35 Are you with me or not? 00:28:28.38\00:28:29.55 It's very important to distinguish these two. 00:28:29.74\00:28:31.59 But the provision for salvation was finished 00:28:31.62\00:28:34.82 when Jesus said, "It is finished." 00:28:34.85\00:28:37.07 The provision for salvation was complete. 00:28:37.10\00:28:39.94 Jesus had lived a perfect life, and He had died for sin. 00:28:40.38\00:28:43.83 That was the good news. 00:28:43.86\00:28:45.14 Salvation had been purchased. 00:28:45.24\00:28:48.17 Salvation had been obtained. 00:28:48.20\00:28:51.04 Now listen carefully. 00:28:51.71\00:28:52.87 Even though the lamb was sacrificed at three in the 00:28:54.21\00:28:56.46 afternoon, the people did not eat the Passover lamb 00:28:56.49\00:29:00.78 until the sun set. 00:29:01.34\00:29:03.52 Interesting. 00:29:04.30\00:29:05.33 Now how is that symbolic? 00:29:06.35\00:29:08.17 Well, you know, to prepare the lamb took an effort. 00:29:08.46\00:29:11.90 They would have to slay the lamb, then they'd have to 00:29:12.28\00:29:14.18 clean the lamb, and then they would have to roast the lamb. 00:29:14.21\00:29:16.43 And then they partook of the lamb. 00:29:16.46\00:29:18.03 Let me ask you, after Jesus died at three o'clock 00:29:18.37\00:29:21.75 in the afternoon, did several things have to be done 00:29:21.78\00:29:24.92 with Him before He was laid in the tomb? 00:29:24.95\00:29:27.31 Absolutely. 00:29:27.70\00:29:28.85 His body had to be prepared for burial. 00:29:29.37\00:29:31.84 They had to go and ask for the body of Jesus, to Pilate. 00:29:32.82\00:29:36.34 They had to take Him down from the cross. 00:29:37.33\00:29:39.54 They had to clean His body. 00:29:40.01\00:29:41.68 They had to wrap Him in linen. 00:29:42.15\00:29:43.81 They had to transport Him to the place of burial. 00:29:44.33\00:29:47.57 They had to bury Him. 00:29:48.04\00:29:49.62 And they had to roll the stone in front of the grave. 00:29:49.93\00:29:53.21 That would have taken more than five minutes. 00:29:53.24\00:29:55.23 It took the better part of Friday afternoon 00:29:56.61\00:30:00.08 to prepare Jesus for burial. 00:30:00.11\00:30:02.88 But when the sun set, Jesus was resting in the tomb... 00:30:03.80\00:30:09.95 ...before the Sabbath began. 00:30:11.75\00:30:13.82 Shortly before the Sabbath began, the body of Jesus, 00:30:13.85\00:30:17.85 the flesh of Jesus was resting in the grave. 00:30:17.88\00:30:21.60 It was resting in the tomb. 00:30:21.63\00:30:23.15 Now let's take a look at the sequence of dates 00:30:23.67\00:30:26.31 of the passion of Christ. 00:30:26.34\00:30:27.69 Luke 23 verses 54 to 56. 00:30:28.02\00:30:31.59 Luke 23:54-56 00:30:31.62\00:30:34.70 This is a passage we usually use when we preach in evangelism 00:30:35.46\00:30:39.80 about the Sabbath. 00:30:39.83\00:30:41.01 It says, "That day was the preparation..." 00:30:41.23\00:30:43.23 That's the day of the crucifixion. 00:30:43.26\00:30:44.75 "...and the Sabbath drew near. 00:30:44.96\00:30:47.57 And the women who had come with Him from Galilee 00:30:47.92\00:30:50.22 followed after, and they observed the tomb 00:30:50.25\00:30:52.66 and how His body was laid. 00:30:52.69\00:30:54.48 Then they returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils. 00:30:54.67\00:30:58.06 And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment." 00:30:58.26\00:31:02.44 Which is the commandment that says you're suppose to 00:31:02.75\00:31:04.48 keep the Sabbath? 00:31:04.51\00:31:05.64 The fourth commandment. 00:31:06.06\00:31:07.23 Are they keeping the fourth commandment? 00:31:07.26\00:31:08.76 Are they resting according to the commandment? 00:31:08.79\00:31:10.47 Yes. 00:31:10.50\00:31:11.53 What was Jesus doing inside the tomb? 00:31:11.56\00:31:13.89 Resting. 00:31:14.06\00:31:15.09 What were they doing outside the tomb? 00:31:15.12\00:31:16.74 Resting. 00:31:16.77\00:31:17.80 Jesus was resting and His people were resting. 00:31:17.83\00:31:20.68 Now here's the question, what was the rest of the women like? 00:31:21.11\00:31:25.41 Oh, it was a joyful rest. 00:31:26.24\00:31:27.35 They were all happy that Sabbath day. 00:31:27.38\00:31:29.26 Are you kidding? 00:31:30.10\00:31:31.28 It was a day of sadness. 00:31:31.81\00:31:33.76 It was a day when they were remembering that their beloved 00:31:34.38\00:31:37.84 Savior was dead. 00:31:37.87\00:31:39.84 It was a day of anguish, a day of sorrow, 00:31:40.07\00:31:42.56 a day of restlessness. 00:31:42.59\00:31:44.52 But let me ask you, if they had truly understood 00:31:44.73\00:31:47.97 what Jesus meant when He said on the cross, "It is finished," 00:31:48.78\00:31:52.13 and if they had clearly accepted what Jesus said, 00:31:52.33\00:31:55.58 that He was going to resurrect on the first day, 00:31:55.61\00:31:57.70 what would that Sabbath have been like? 00:31:57.73\00:32:00.14 Oh, they would have said, "The Master has saved us from sin. 00:32:00.53\00:32:04.88 He has lived a perfect life and He has paid for our sins. 00:32:05.46\00:32:09.11 Hallelujah. 00:32:09.14\00:32:10.17 Now He's resting in the grave. 00:32:10.20\00:32:11.91 And tomorrow He will rise from the dead." 00:32:11.94\00:32:14.58 Oh, but what would that Sabbath have been 00:32:15.15\00:32:17.01 if they had understood Bible prophecy? 00:32:17.04\00:32:18.85 It would have been a joyous celebration, 00:32:18.88\00:32:21.05 because the Messiah was resting from His works of redemption. 00:32:21.08\00:32:25.87 Now some people are saying that Jesus was 00:32:26.68\00:32:30.00 crucified on Wednesday and He resurrected on Sabbath. 00:32:30.03\00:32:33.93 Others are saying that the three days and three nights 00:32:34.63\00:32:37.38 begin on Tuesday night when Judas decided to betray Jesus, 00:32:37.41\00:32:41.72 and Jesus resurrected shortly after sundown on Friday. 00:32:41.75\00:32:45.38 This prophecy of Exodus 16 makes that absolutely impossible. 00:32:46.73\00:32:50.89 I want to read this statement from Ellen White 00:32:51.22\00:32:53.12 which is explicit. 00:32:53.15\00:32:54.72 It's a statement about the days in which Jesus dies, 00:32:55.19\00:32:58.93 and Jesus rests in the tomb, and when Jesus resurrected. 00:32:58.96\00:33:01.95 This statement is found in, Manuscript 25, 1898. 00:33:02.56\00:33:07.29 And this is how it reads. 00:33:07.32\00:33:08.92 "The Father and the Son rested after their work of creation. 00:33:09.60\00:33:15.51 'Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, 00:33:16.98\00:33:18.73 and all the host of them. 00:33:18.76\00:33:19.91 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had made. 00:33:20.11\00:33:23.20 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it; 00:33:23.49\00:33:26.10 because that in it He had rested.' 00:33:26.13\00:33:28.56 The death of Christ was designed to be at the very time 00:33:28.93\00:33:32.51 in which it took place. 00:33:32.54\00:33:34.76 It was in God's plan that the work which Christ 00:33:34.96\00:33:38.72 had engaged to do should be completed on a Friday, 00:33:38.75\00:33:43.88 and that on the Sabbath He should rest in the tomb, 00:33:44.52\00:33:48.86 even as the Father and Son had rested 00:33:49.28\00:33:52.26 after completing Their creative work." 00:33:52.29\00:33:54.96 So Jesus is repeating in redemption 00:33:55.38\00:33:57.84 what happened at creation. 00:33:57.87\00:33:59.77 But in redemption, He works, and then He rests 00:34:00.43\00:34:04.48 in His work for redemption. 00:34:04.61\00:34:06.48 At the beginning, He created, and then He rested 00:34:06.51\00:34:09.93 from His works of creation. 00:34:09.96\00:34:11.43 She continues saying, "The hour of Christ's apparent defeat 00:34:11.46\00:34:15.31 was the hour of His victory. 00:34:15.34\00:34:17.48 The great plan, devised before the foundations of the earth 00:34:17.66\00:34:21.77 were laid, was successfully carried out." 00:34:21.80\00:34:25.44 And then when did Jesus resurrect? 00:34:25.47\00:34:27.48 According to Luke 24 and verse 1, 00:34:27.79\00:34:30.76 Jesus resurrected on the first day of the week. 00:34:30.79\00:34:34.78 Is that clear? 00:34:35.81\00:34:36.89 Now, some say that Jesus purposely chose Sunday 00:34:37.36\00:34:41.99 as the day of His resurrection because He wanted His church 00:34:42.62\00:34:45.83 to know that Sunday was holy, and that it should be observed 00:34:45.86\00:34:49.95 in honor of His resurrection from that day on. 00:34:49.98\00:34:52.83 For example, John Paul II... 00:34:53.74\00:34:55.63 Probably the most popular Pope in history. 00:34:55.93\00:34:58.67 ...in his pastoral letter, Dies Domini, 00:34:58.90\00:35:01.52 makes a long list of all the significant events 00:35:01.55\00:35:05.31 that took place on Sunday. 00:35:05.34\00:35:07.12 He says, Jesus resurrected Sunday, 00:35:07.35\00:35:09.60 He walked with two of His followers to Emmaus on Sunday, 00:35:09.63\00:35:12.81 He appeared to His disciples on Sunday evening 00:35:12.84\00:35:15.37 and then appeared to them again the following Sunday. 00:35:15.40\00:35:18.00 According to John Paul's calculations, the Holy Spirit 00:35:18.71\00:35:21.67 was poured out on a Sunday. 00:35:21.70\00:35:23.57 And the first proclamation of the gospel was on Sunday. 00:35:23.68\00:35:26.64 And the first baptisms were on Sunday. 00:35:26.67\00:35:28.86 Quite an impressive list, right? 00:35:28.89\00:35:30.62 But the manna episode makes it absolutely clear 00:35:33.09\00:35:35.97 that the important day was not Sunday, but the Sabbath. 00:35:36.63\00:35:39.50 If Jesus rested in the tomb on the Sabbath 00:35:40.08\00:35:42.94 and His body saw no corruption, then He would have had 00:35:43.31\00:35:47.00 to rest in the tomb on the Sabbath. 00:35:47.03\00:35:48.94 Are you following me? 00:35:49.27\00:35:50.41 In other words, the significant day is not Sunday. 00:35:50.74\00:35:54.00 The significant day is the day before Sunday. 00:35:54.23\00:35:56.80 Because if Jesus, according to Exodus 16, 00:35:57.16\00:36:00.21 had to rest in the tomb all day Sabbath, 00:36:00.24\00:36:03.39 what day would He resurrect then? 00:36:03.42\00:36:05.12 He would resurrect the next day. 00:36:05.15\00:36:06.84 But He's not resurrecting the next day to make the 00:36:07.16\00:36:09.42 next day holy, but because He had to rest the 00:36:09.45\00:36:11.57 previous day in the tomb to fulfill Exodus 16. 00:36:11.60\00:36:14.70 Are you following me? 00:36:15.71\00:36:16.83 So the significant day is the Sabbath 00:36:16.86\00:36:19.26 when Jesus rested in the tomb, not Sunday. 00:36:19.29\00:36:22.48 You know, it's amazing to me that during holy week 00:36:23.05\00:36:27.98 Christians speak about Palm Sunday, 00:36:29.69\00:36:32.49 Ash Wednesday, Holy Thursday, 00:36:33.91\00:36:37.64 Good Friday, Resurrection Sunday. 00:36:37.67\00:36:40.77 And what do they say about the Sabbath? 00:36:40.80\00:36:42.72 Nothing. 00:36:42.92\00:36:44.36 Interesting. 00:36:46.11\00:36:47.52 The Sabbath disappears. 00:36:48.30\00:36:50.21 Every event of the passion of Christ is celebrated. 00:36:51.35\00:36:54.69 But when it comes to the Sabbath, 00:36:54.89\00:36:56.77 it's practically disappearing. 00:36:57.21\00:37:00.56 Now some people use questionable arguments 00:37:01.37\00:37:03.68 to defend Sunday as the day of rest. 00:37:03.71\00:37:05.70 For example, they say that all day Sabbath the disciples 00:37:06.29\00:37:09.28 were sad because Jesus was dead, but on Sunday 00:37:09.31\00:37:12.71 they were happy because Jesus had resurrected. 00:37:12.74\00:37:15.37 Somebody once said, "I call it the psychological argument." 00:37:16.34\00:37:19.76 And the person who used that argument, I said, 00:37:20.97\00:37:23.39 "You know, the problem is there are two things that deny 00:37:23.50\00:37:27.90 the argument that you are using." 00:37:27.93\00:37:29.59 First of all, it was not God's intention that they be sad 00:37:30.87\00:37:34.93 on the Sabbath. 00:37:34.96\00:37:36.09 Jesus had told them repeatedly that He was going to go 00:37:36.66\00:37:39.50 to Jerusalem, He was going to suffer, and He was going to die, 00:37:39.53\00:37:42.45 and He was going to resurrect the third day. 00:37:42.48\00:37:44.18 Now if they had believed that, would that have been a sad day? 00:37:45.00\00:37:47.91 No, that would have been a happy day. 00:37:48.15\00:37:49.77 It's not God's fault that it was a sad day. 00:37:49.80\00:37:52.28 It was not the intention of God that it be a sad day. 00:37:53.09\00:37:55.78 It was the intention of God that it be a happy day. 00:37:55.81\00:37:59.50 And secondly, and even more devastating, 00:38:00.64\00:38:02.77 is the fact that on Sunday night the disciples did not even 00:38:03.05\00:38:06.42 believe that Jesus had resurrected, 00:38:06.45\00:38:08.35 if you read the gospel stories. 00:38:09.35\00:38:11.02 So how could they be happy all day Sunday 00:38:11.05\00:38:13.18 if they didn't believe that Jesus had resurrected 00:38:13.21\00:38:15.12 until Sunday night? 00:38:15.15\00:38:16.68 You see, people use all sorts of arguments that they repeat, 00:38:17.14\00:38:19.96 but they don't examine Scripture for themselves. 00:38:20.16\00:38:23.24 Now let's get back to the manna. 00:38:23.63\00:38:25.43 The body or the flesh of Jesus rested in the tomb on Sabbath. 00:38:27.11\00:38:32.04 And Jesus is the manna. 00:38:33.32\00:38:36.09 What happened to the manna when it was saved 00:38:37.28\00:38:39.95 from Friday to Sabbath? 00:38:40.25\00:38:42.11 It was as fresh on Sabbath as it had been on Friday. 00:38:43.29\00:38:47.55 It did not breed worms, nor did it stink. 00:38:47.58\00:38:52.59 What would have happened with a normal body 00:38:53.74\00:38:56.14 if somebody had died on Friday, what would have begun? 00:38:56.17\00:38:59.80 The process of decomposition. 00:39:00.11\00:39:02.91 Which would eventually lead to breed worms and stink. 00:39:03.61\00:39:07.87 The flesh. 00:39:08.14\00:39:09.27 But Jesus, in the tomb, was the manna. 00:39:09.68\00:39:13.72 And therefore, His body did not decompose. 00:39:14.39\00:39:18.85 His body did not see corruption, because He was what the 00:39:19.05\00:39:22.58 manna represented. 00:39:22.61\00:39:24.43 Are you understanding me? 00:39:24.81\00:39:26.06 Now let's prove this from Scripture. 00:39:26.54\00:39:28.73 Go with me once again to John 6 and verse 51. 00:39:29.24\00:39:32.58 John chapter 6 and verse 51. 00:39:32.61\00:39:34.95 Jesus says, "I am the living bread which came 00:39:36.19\00:39:38.42 down from heaven. 00:39:38.45\00:39:39.65 If anyone eats this bread, he will live forever; 00:39:39.68\00:39:42.23 and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, 00:39:42.69\00:39:45.62 which I shall give for the life of the world." 00:39:45.65\00:39:47.33 The manna represents the flesh of Jesus. 00:39:47.36\00:39:49.90 The manna did not breed worms or stink on the Sabbath. 00:39:49.93\00:39:52.70 And that represented the flesh of Jesus Christ. 00:39:52.73\00:39:55.33 Now notice the prophecy from Psalm 16 and verses 8 to 10. 00:39:56.12\00:40:00.92 The prophecy from Psalm 16 and verses 8 through 10. 00:40:01.15\00:40:05.13 This is a prophecy of David. 00:40:05.16\00:40:06.75 This never happened with David, this is a direct prophecy 00:40:06.78\00:40:09.32 about the Messiah. 00:40:09.35\00:40:10.43 And I am going to read as it appears in the NIV 00:40:11.21\00:40:15.34 because it's less confusing than it is in the King James Version. 00:40:15.37\00:40:19.39 It says, "I have set the Lord always before me. 00:40:19.72\00:40:23.02 Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved." 00:40:23.40\00:40:26.69 Here, Jesus is speaking to His Father. 00:40:26.72\00:40:28.82 "Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices..." 00:40:29.75\00:40:34.52 Now notice this. 00:40:35.35\00:40:36.53 "...my flesh also will..." What's the next word? 00:40:36.77\00:40:41.78 Hmmm, interesting. 00:40:42.50\00:40:44.35 What did the flesh of Jesus do? 00:40:44.74\00:40:46.55 It rested. Where? 00:40:47.13\00:40:49.14 In the tomb. 00:40:49.46\00:40:50.73 "...my flesh also will rest in hope." 00:40:51.31\00:40:53.74 Now why does the flesh of Jesus rest in hope? 00:40:53.77\00:40:56.28 Here comes the reason. 00:40:56.31\00:40:57.34 "For," that means, because, "You will not leave me in the grave, 00:40:57.53\00:41:03.53 nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption." 00:41:03.75\00:41:07.80 So while the body of Jesus rested in the grave, 00:41:10.45\00:41:13.52 did His body decompose? 00:41:13.78\00:41:15.70 No, because He was what the manna represented. 00:41:15.90\00:41:18.90 He died on Friday. 00:41:18.93\00:41:20.13 While His body was resting, His flesh was resting, 00:41:20.16\00:41:22.70 it did not decompose because He was what the manna represented. 00:41:22.73\00:41:26.76 Now you say, "How do you know that this 00:41:27.65\00:41:28.97 Psalm applies to Jesus?" 00:41:29.00\00:41:30.56 Well, the apostle Peter quoted it in Acts chapter 2 00:41:31.17\00:41:35.42 in his Pentecostal sermon. 00:41:35.45\00:41:37.19 Acts 2 verses 25 to 27, and then we'll read verses 31 and 32. 00:41:37.47\00:41:43.41 Here it says in Acts 2:25, "For David says concerning Him..." 00:41:44.28\00:41:48.85 Now he's going to quote Psalm 16 saying this applies to Jesus. 00:41:48.88\00:41:52.09 "For David says concerning Him, 'I foresaw the Lord always 00:41:52.31\00:41:56.83 before my face, for He is at my right hand, 00:41:56.86\00:42:00.06 that I may not be shaken. 00:42:00.09\00:42:01.94 Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad; 00:42:02.04\00:42:04.78 moreover my flesh also will..." What? 00:42:04.81\00:42:08.43 "...will rest in hope." This is from acts. 00:42:08.79\00:42:10.16 It's no longer from Psalms. 00:42:10.19\00:42:12.36 "Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope. 00:42:12.60\00:42:15.26 For You will not leave," as the NIV says, 00:42:15.34\00:42:17.81 "you will not leave me in the grave," or in Hades, 00:42:17.84\00:42:21.90 "nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption." 00:42:21.93\00:42:25.38 Now notice what that means in verses 31 and 32. 00:42:25.58\00:42:29.14 It says about David, "Seeing what was ahead, 00:42:29.59\00:42:32.74 he spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, 00:42:32.97\00:42:36.32 that He was not abandoned to the grave, 00:42:36.35\00:42:38.96 nor did His body see..." What? 00:42:38.99\00:42:42.42 "...nor did His body see decay." 00:42:42.45\00:42:44.68 So let me ask you, what is the reason, 00:42:46.41\00:42:47.62 what is the second reason for keeping the Sabbath? 00:42:47.65\00:42:50.16 The first reason is because, we rest because 00:42:50.37\00:42:53.23 the creator rested on the Sabbath. 00:42:53.26\00:42:55.31 What is the second reason? 00:42:56.06\00:42:57.62 We rest on Sabbath because it's in commemoration 00:42:58.18\00:43:01.19 of the rest of the Redeemer. 00:43:01.22\00:43:03.07 So we have two reasons to keep the Sabbath. 00:43:04.17\00:43:06.97 First of all, we rest in the Creator's rest. 00:43:07.32\00:43:10.03 And by the way, the Creator is Jesus. 00:43:10.44\00:43:12.75 "All things were made through Him." 00:43:13.12\00:43:15.73 So we rest on Sabbath to commemorate the creation 00:43:16.18\00:43:19.59 that Jesus brought forth. 00:43:19.62\00:43:20.93 And we also rest because we follow His example 00:43:20.96\00:43:23.61 in resting in the tomb on the Sabbath. 00:43:23.64\00:43:26.12 So is there a Christ centered reason for keeping the Sabbath? 00:43:26.88\00:43:30.27 See, Exodus 16 not only tells you, "keep the Sabbath," 00:43:30.30\00:43:33.44 but it tells you why you should keep the Sabbath. 00:43:33.47\00:43:35.77 It's because Jesus rested in the tomb on the Sabbath, 00:43:35.80\00:43:38.80 and we should rest with Him. 00:43:38.83\00:43:40.44 The women did not understand it, but the Bible says that they 00:43:40.55\00:43:43.68 rested the Sabbath day according to the commandment. 00:43:43.71\00:43:46.30 Let me ask you, once they understood, 00:43:46.33\00:43:48.20 do you think they rested in a different way? 00:43:48.23\00:43:50.47 Oh, I can imagine they said, "Oh wow, did we ever 00:43:50.95\00:43:53.80 miss the point. 00:43:53.83\00:43:54.87 Now from now on, we're going to rest in what Jesus did, 00:43:55.94\00:43:59.06 because He's such a wonderful Savior. 00:43:59.09\00:44:00.93 He lived a perfect life and He paid for our sins." 00:44:00.96\00:44:04.29 Wow. 00:44:04.68\00:44:05.71 So we need to be careful about interpreting Exodus 16 00:44:06.80\00:44:09.22 without Jesus. 00:44:09.25\00:44:10.52 Because the reason for the manna is Christ centered. 00:44:11.42\00:44:15.40 It's not just manna itself. 00:44:15.43\00:44:17.53 But now I want you to notice that the Sabbath 00:44:17.70\00:44:19.95 has a third dimension. 00:44:19.98\00:44:21.71 There's a third reason for keeping the Sabbath. 00:44:22.05\00:44:24.02 And it is a prophetic reason. 00:44:24.58\00:44:26.71 A future reason, as we look forward in history. 00:44:27.65\00:44:31.35 You see, God invited... This is the last page. 00:44:31.99\00:44:34.05 God invited Adam and Eve to enter His rest at creation. 00:44:34.08\00:44:38.12 Now He invites us to enter His rest in redemption. 00:44:38.83\00:44:42.25 But the Sabbath also has a prophetic dimension. 00:44:42.70\00:44:45.94 Jesus will invite us to enter His rest when He makes 00:44:46.21\00:44:49.73 a new heavens and a new earth. 00:44:49.76\00:44:51.64 The Sabbath thus points back to creation; 00:44:52.04\00:44:55.31 it points to the present, to redemption; 00:44:55.41\00:44:58.56 and it points to the future, the everlasting kingdom. 00:44:58.59\00:45:01.58 Will we keep the Sabbath in the earth made new? 00:45:02.06\00:45:04.66 Yes. 00:45:04.96\00:45:06.02 Go with me to Isaiah 66 verses 22 and 23. 00:45:06.05\00:45:09.76 Isaiah 66:22-23 00:45:09.79\00:45:12.28 This is a passage we all know well. 00:45:12.94\00:45:14.91 We use it in evangelism, and very appropriately so. 00:45:14.94\00:45:18.04 And notice what it says. 00:45:18.62\00:45:19.72 "For as the new heavens and the new earth 00:45:19.75\00:45:21.94 which I will make shall remain before Me..." 00:45:21.97\00:45:25.12 Is this the same expression that appears in Revelation 21 and 22, 00:45:25.15\00:45:28.48 new heavens and new earth? 00:45:28.51\00:45:29.78 Absolutely, it's referring to the same thing. 00:45:30.00\00:45:32.22 So it says, "'For as the new heavens and the new earth 00:45:32.47\00:45:34.64 which I will make shall remain before Me,' says the Lord, 00:45:34.84\00:45:37.50 'so shall your descendants and your name remain. 00:45:37.70\00:45:40.39 And it shall come to pass that from one 00:45:40.69\00:45:42.99 New Moon to another...'" 00:45:43.02\00:45:44.15 And some people get all confused about the New Moon. 00:45:44.52\00:45:46.72 The New Moon is simply the beginning of the month. 00:45:46.75\00:45:49.81 It can be translated, "month." 00:45:50.21\00:45:52.30 In fact, the Spanish version says, "de mes en mes." 00:45:52.33\00:45:55.83 Instead of, "from New Moon to New Moon," it says, 00:45:56.03\00:45:58.01 "from month to month." 00:45:58.04\00:45:59.49 Why are we going to go to worship before the Lord 00:46:00.31\00:46:02.54 every month? 00:46:02.57\00:46:03.61 Because there's a certain tree that produces 00:46:04.51\00:46:06.42 its fruit every month. 00:46:06.45\00:46:07.61 And we have to go eat from the tree of life every month. 00:46:08.39\00:46:10.75 Do you realize that Adam and Eve had to continue 00:46:11.78\00:46:13.78 eating from the tree of life in the Garden of Eden? 00:46:13.81\00:46:15.73 It wasn't sufficient to eat only once 00:46:16.46\00:46:18.52 and they would be immortal. 00:46:18.55\00:46:19.61 They had to continuously eat from the tree of life. 00:46:19.64\00:46:22.29 The tree of life was a battery charger. 00:46:22.32\00:46:24.65 In other words, they didn't have inherit life within themselves. 00:46:27.40\00:46:30.70 They needed to go every month, because we're going to have to 00:46:31.01\00:46:33.59 go every month, they needed to go every month 00:46:33.62\00:46:35.85 to eat from the tree of life to recharge their battery. 00:46:36.15\00:46:40.63 Do you know why individuals lived to be almost 00:46:41.03\00:46:42.92 a 1000 years before the flood? 00:46:42.95\00:46:44.61 Because they had a more charged battery than we do. 00:46:44.64\00:46:47.11 The battery has become depleted, because we have 00:46:48.72\00:46:52.22 been deprived from the tree of life. 00:46:52.25\00:46:53.94 But we will be able to partake of the 00:46:54.04\00:46:55.59 tree of life in the kingdom. 00:46:55.62\00:46:57.18 We will go from month to month, from new moon to new moon, 00:46:57.59\00:47:01.69 to eat from the tree of life. 00:47:01.72\00:47:03.75 But we're going to go for another reason. 00:47:03.78\00:47:05.64 So it says, "...from New Moon to New Moon," 00:47:05.74\00:47:07.77 or from month to month, "And from one Sabbath to another, 00:47:08.13\00:47:12.87 all the Jews..." 00:47:13.19\00:47:14.99 Thank you very much. 00:47:16.85\00:47:17.95 I'm glad you're still awake out there. 00:47:17.98\00:47:19.33 "...all flesh..." 00:47:20.22\00:47:21.73 So if you're made of flesh, you're going to be there. 00:47:21.76\00:47:23.48 "'...all flesh shall come to worship before Me,' 00:47:23.92\00:47:27.72 says the Lord." 00:47:27.92\00:47:29.95 Now some people say, "Wait a minute. 00:47:30.92\00:47:32.76 There's not going to be any sun nor moon up there, 00:47:33.98\00:47:35.82 so how are you going to have months and how are 00:47:35.85\00:47:37.25 you going to have days?" 00:47:37.28\00:47:38.31 Well we solved that problem yesterday, didn't we, 00:47:38.34\00:47:40.58 in our class. 00:47:40.61\00:47:41.74 But let's read the verse again. 00:47:41.87\00:47:43.49 Just in case anybody was sleeping. 00:47:43.93\00:47:45.82 Revelation 21 verse 23. 00:47:46.31\00:47:48.21 Is there going to be a sun and moon in the new earth? 00:47:48.24\00:47:50.82 Of course they are. 00:47:51.21\00:47:52.33 Do you know what's going to happen at the 00:47:52.55\00:47:53.58 second coming of Jesus? 00:47:53.61\00:47:54.64 You can read it in, Early Writings, page 41. 00:47:54.67\00:47:56.92 Ellen White says that when God utters His voice 00:47:57.34\00:47:59.53 to deliver His people, His voice will be so powerful 00:47:59.56\00:48:02.65 that the sun, moon, and stars will be moved 00:48:02.68\00:48:04.63 out of their places. 00:48:04.66\00:48:06.25 And that's the reason why this earth will be dark 00:48:06.96\00:48:09.17 during the millennium. 00:48:09.20\00:48:10.42 Because the sun will be moved out of its place. 00:48:10.45\00:48:13.00 So after the millennium, when God makes a new heavens 00:48:13.66\00:48:17.00 and a new earth, He will rearrange our planetary system. 00:48:17.03\00:48:20.29 And He will place the sun, the moon, and the stars 00:48:20.75\00:48:23.15 where they will benefit our earth. 00:48:23.26\00:48:25.53 And He will make a new heavens and a new earth. 00:48:25.63\00:48:28.05 So notice, Revelation 21 and verse 23. 00:48:29.15\00:48:33.51 "The city..." Where? 00:48:34.25\00:48:35.80 The new earth, the whole new earth? 00:48:35.83\00:48:37.34 No, no, no. "The city had no need..." 00:48:37.44\00:48:42.96 Does it say the city, the sun and moon don't 00:48:43.88\00:48:46.39 shine in the city? No. 00:48:46.42\00:48:47.63 It says that there's no need in the city 00:48:47.66\00:48:50.05 for sun or moon to shine it in. 00:48:50.08\00:48:52.17 "...for the glory of God illuminated it, 00:48:52.20\00:48:55.60 and the Lamb is its..." What? 00:48:55.63\00:48:58.37 "...the Lamb is its light." 00:48:58.40\00:49:00.19 Is there going to be a sun and a moon? 00:49:00.86\00:49:02.54 Yes they are. 00:49:02.79\00:49:04.04 Are the sun and the moon going to be as glorious 00:49:04.24\00:49:06.12 as the glory of God in the city? 00:49:06.15\00:49:07.77 Absolutely not. 00:49:07.87\00:49:09.04 It will be like I said yesterday; 00:49:09.07\00:49:10.79 shining a flashlight on the ground at noon in Fresno. 00:49:10.82\00:49:16.62 The beam is shining, you can't see it, 00:49:17.85\00:49:20.91 because the glory of the sun is so bright 00:49:20.94\00:49:23.30 that the flashlight in comparison is nothing. 00:49:23.50\00:49:26.36 And this is what is meant by Isaiah 24 and verse 23 00:49:26.66\00:49:30.67 that we noticed yesterday, where it says, 00:49:30.70\00:49:32.95 "The moon will be disgraced and the sun ashamed..." 00:49:32.98\00:49:37.93 In other words, they're going to step aside. 00:49:37.96\00:49:39.79 "...for the Lord of hosts will reign on Mount Zion 00:49:40.12\00:49:43.37 and in Jerusalem, and before His elders, gloriously." 00:49:43.40\00:49:48.54 Now, how long do you think Jesus is going to take 00:49:49.65\00:49:54.25 to create a new heavens and a new earth? 00:49:54.45\00:49:57.18 You know, I use to think that He was going to make 00:50:00.10\00:50:02.45 everything new just like that. 00:50:02.48\00:50:04.39 "Let everything be new." 00:50:05.26\00:50:07.58 And it's all there. 00:50:08.57\00:50:09.64 I don't believe that. 00:50:10.47\00:50:11.66 You say, "Why don't you believe it?" 00:50:12.26\00:50:13.39 I'll explain the reason why. 00:50:13.42\00:50:14.75 We are going to keep the Sabbath in commemoration 00:50:16.31\00:50:18.97 of the creation of new heavens and new earth. 00:50:19.17\00:50:21.89 And you cannot have a seventh day unless 00:50:22.87\00:50:24.90 you have the first six. 00:50:24.93\00:50:26.64 Are you following me or not? 00:50:28.39\00:50:29.73 If the Sabbath, the seventh day, is going to commemorate 00:50:30.91\00:50:33.91 the new creation, you have to have the first six 00:50:33.94\00:50:36.87 in order to have the seventh. 00:50:36.90\00:50:38.28 And so Jesus, when He creates this earth, 00:50:39.87\00:50:43.10 He is going to perform the work that He performed 00:50:43.13\00:50:48.73 originally at creation. 00:50:48.76\00:50:50.40 And do you know what the exciting thing is? 00:50:50.75\00:50:53.16 You see, at the beginning, Adam and Eve did not see 00:50:53.80\00:50:58.24 God create anything. 00:50:58.27\00:50:59.85 Where they there when the light was created? 00:51:01.95\00:51:03.59 No. 00:51:03.65\00:51:04.68 Where they there when the firmament was created? 00:51:04.71\00:51:06.82 No. 00:51:06.85\00:51:07.88 Where they there when the dry land and the plants 00:51:07.91\00:51:09.85 and the trees and the flowers were created? 00:51:09.88\00:51:11.65 No. 00:51:11.80\00:51:12.83 Were they there when the sun, moon, and stars 00:51:12.98\00:51:14.69 were put in order? 00:51:14.72\00:51:15.85 Absolutely not. 00:51:16.00\00:51:17.03 Were they there when the birds and the fish were created? 00:51:17.06\00:51:19.68 Absolutely not. 00:51:19.71\00:51:20.74 Were they there when the animals were created, 00:51:20.77\00:51:23.17 the land animals were created? 00:51:23.20\00:51:24.78 No. 00:51:24.81\00:51:25.84 So did Adam see God create anything? 00:51:27.53\00:51:29.87 Obviously Adam didn't see God create him. 00:51:30.41\00:51:32.78 He just suddenly wakes up and says... 00:51:33.43\00:51:35.03 He looks all around him, "Wow, where did I come from?" 00:51:36.37\00:51:38.66 And the amazing thing is, that Adam did not even see 00:51:40.38\00:51:43.27 Eve created because God put him to sleep. 00:51:43.30\00:51:45.86 What is the only way in which Adam and Eve 00:51:47.89\00:51:52.84 could be sure that Jesus was the Creator? 00:51:52.87\00:51:55.03 By faith in the story that Jesus told them. 00:51:55.95\00:51:59.03 They lived by faith, not by sight. 00:52:00.07\00:52:02.77 But you know what the amazing thing is? 00:52:03.45\00:52:05.16 That when God makes a new heavens and the new earth, 00:52:05.75\00:52:07.86 we shall be spectators. 00:52:07.89\00:52:09.89 I love this. 00:52:12.21\00:52:13.52 Because God's people will be alive inside the holy city. 00:52:13.78\00:52:18.78 And you can imagine we're sitting in front row seats. 00:52:20.26\00:52:23.50 No bleachers for any of God's people. 00:52:23.95\00:52:26.38 Front row seats. Box seats. 00:52:26.78\00:52:29.36 And I'll tell you what. 00:52:30.49\00:52:31.77 And then Jesus will say, "Let there be light." 00:52:31.80\00:52:34.87 Wow, there it is. 00:52:34.90\00:52:36.89 Let there be the firmament. 00:52:37.16\00:52:38.95 Everything was destroyed by the plagues, 00:52:39.77\00:52:41.79 by the second coming. 00:52:41.89\00:52:43.22 "The earth was without form and void," Jeremiah says. 00:52:43.69\00:52:46.04 Just like before creation week. 00:52:46.07\00:52:47.61 Are you with me? 00:52:47.64\00:52:48.72 And so now Jesus says, "Ah, let the dry land produce trees 00:52:49.77\00:52:53.85 and flowers and plants." 00:52:53.88\00:52:57.91 And the earth becomes a gigantic botanical garden. 00:52:58.71\00:53:03.21 And then Jesus says, "Let the sun, moon, and stars 00:53:04.51\00:53:07.20 occupy their legitimate places." 00:53:07.23\00:53:09.80 And so all of those heavenly bodies occupy their places 00:53:10.61\00:53:14.43 to benefit the planet. 00:53:14.46\00:53:15.79 And then Jesus says, "Let the sky have birds, 00:53:16.00\00:53:19.91 and let the waters produce fish." 00:53:20.50\00:53:22.10 And suddenly the waters are bubbling with life. 00:53:22.13\00:53:25.04 And the birds are chirping away and singing in the heavens. 00:53:25.69\00:53:28.88 And then Jesus says, "Let the land produce 00:53:29.32\00:53:33.14 all of these animals." 00:53:33.17\00:53:35.12 So you have giraffes, and elephants, and cows, and horses. 00:53:35.85\00:53:40.84 And the serpent will drag himself along. 00:53:41.72\00:53:44.45 He's not going to fly again. 00:53:45.95\00:53:47.52 There will be two reminders. 00:53:47.88\00:53:49.45 The reminder of the scars on the body of Jesus, 00:53:49.48\00:53:54.24 and the Bible says that the serpent will eat dust. 00:53:54.27\00:53:56.86 He'll bite the dust. 00:53:57.50\00:53:59.03 Interesting. 00:53:59.69\00:54:00.81 And then when Jesus finishes His work, 00:54:01.35\00:54:03.77 He'll say to His people, "What do you think?" 00:54:04.51\00:54:07.78 And we're going to say, "Lord, the elephant's 00:54:08.99\00:54:11.11 ears are too big." 00:54:11.14\00:54:12.76 "Lord, the giraffe's neck is too long." 00:54:14.41\00:54:18.20 No. 00:54:18.23\00:54:19.26 We will look in awe at everything that Jesus 00:54:19.78\00:54:22.88 has made; it is absolutely perfect. 00:54:22.91\00:54:24.84 Even more beautiful than it was at the beginning. 00:54:24.87\00:54:27.44 And then Jesus will say, as the sun sets the sixth day, 00:54:28.68\00:54:32.86 He'll say, "My people, let's now sit down and rest and enjoy." 00:54:33.95\00:54:41.28 And so the seventh day will be used for the same thing 00:54:42.43\00:54:44.95 that the seventh day was used at the beginning, 00:54:44.98\00:54:47.66 at creation. 00:54:47.76\00:54:49.18 If you read the material on, God's Great Week, 00:54:49.95\00:54:52.38 that you received yesterday, Ellen White said that 00:54:52.65\00:54:56.01 God looked upon His work of creation and He delighted 00:54:56.04\00:55:00.18 in His work of creation. 00:55:00.21\00:55:01.95 Everything was beautiful and everything was perfect, 00:55:02.15\00:55:05.27 worthy of its divine Author. 00:55:05.76\00:55:07.81 He rested, not as one tired, but one who delighted 00:55:07.84\00:55:11.24 in His work of creation. 00:55:11.34\00:55:12.92 I can imagine God said, "Wow, I even outdid Myself. 00:55:13.59\00:55:17.66 This is wonderful, beautiful." 00:55:19.04\00:55:20.42 And Adam and Eve were there. 00:55:20.45\00:55:21.94 The Sabbath was still not holy until God had 00:55:22.69\00:55:24.89 rested the whole day. 00:55:24.92\00:55:25.95 But Adam and Eve are with Jesus. 00:55:25.98\00:55:28.30 And Jesus is giving them the scenic tour. 00:55:28.99\00:55:31.41 They say, "Look, wow." 00:55:32.31\00:55:34.27 And He's taking them all across creation. 00:55:34.37\00:55:36.88 They say, "Wow, what a wonderful world. 00:55:36.91\00:55:39.57 Where did this come from?" 00:55:39.60\00:55:40.63 Jesus said, "I made it." 00:55:40.66\00:55:41.72 "Why?" 00:55:42.74\00:55:43.77 "For you." 00:55:43.80\00:55:45.28 "For us? Free?" 00:55:45.38\00:55:47.97 "Yes, free. It's yours." 00:55:48.00\00:55:49.80 "Wow, what a wonderful God you are." 00:55:50.16\00:55:52.68 And then the devil has to come in and spoil it 00:55:53.29\00:55:55.37 by trying to make God look bad. 00:55:55.82\00:55:58.90 And Eve bought it. 00:55:59.12\00:56:00.55 After all of the wonderful things that God had 00:56:00.65\00:56:03.15 done for her, and that God had done for Adam. 00:56:03.18\00:56:07.10 Unbelievable. 00:56:07.13\00:56:08.16 And that's why we're here in this class. 00:56:08.19\00:56:10.16 Or else we would be in the Garden of Eden. 00:56:10.89\00:56:12.84 But we have an Eden to look forward to... 00:56:14.20\00:56:16.90 ...if we receive Jesus as our Savior and as our Lord, 00:56:17.86\00:56:21.86 if we claim His life and His death in our place, 00:56:22.49\00:56:25.42 if we see what sin cost. 00:56:25.86\00:56:28.54 And when we see what sin cost, we say to Jesus, 00:56:29.36\00:56:32.77 "Lord, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I hate sin. 00:56:32.80\00:56:35.20 I love You, I hate sin. 00:56:35.23\00:56:36.33 I want to overcome sin. 00:56:36.36\00:56:37.61 Please give me victory over sin." 00:56:37.64\00:56:39.18 Jesus will give us victory over sin. 00:56:39.49\00:56:41.64 So it's not only a matter of, in a cheap way, saying, 00:56:42.41\00:56:46.13 "Okay, give me Your life and give me Your death." 00:56:46.16\00:56:47.74 No, the sorrow for sin will lead us to want to reflect 00:56:47.77\00:56:52.72 the beautiful and perfect character of Jesus, 00:56:52.92\00:56:55.31 and rest in Him as our wonderful Creator, 00:56:55.65\00:56:59.57 as our wonderful Redeemer, 00:57:00.59\00:57:02.63 and as our soon to be Restorer in a new heavens 00:57:02.79\00:57:07.82 and a new earth. 00:57:07.85\00:57:09.01 What a wonderful God we have. 00:57:09.37\00:57:11.33 And what a Christ centered perspective of the Sabbath 00:57:11.36\00:57:14.82 in Scripture. 00:57:15.16\00:57:16.60 See, it's not about keeping the Sabbath. 00:57:17.36\00:57:19.78 It's about loving the Lord of the Sabbath 00:57:20.07\00:57:22.38 and delighting in spending time with Him. 00:57:22.73\00:57:25.37 Because we like to spend time with people we love. 00:57:25.40\00:57:28.58 So people who say, "Oh, I don't have to keep the Sabbath," 00:57:29.82\00:57:32.30 they're slapping Jesus in the face. 00:57:32.33\00:57:34.12 They're saying, "I don't want to spend time with You." 00:57:34.15\00:57:36.40 It's all about time with our beloved Savior, Jesus Christ. 00:57:36.43\00:57:41.73 What a wonderful Savior He is. 00:57:41.83\00:57:44.48
