Alright, welcome again to Anchor Bible school. 00:00:15.12\00:00:18.04 We're glad you're here. 00:00:18.07\00:00:19.25 Has it been a blessing? 00:00:19.44\00:00:20.75 Praise the Lord. 00:00:21.58\00:00:22.65 I'm glad to hear that hearty amen. 00:00:22.68\00:00:24.93 It's very encouraging. 00:00:24.96\00:00:26.34 It makes it all worthwhile. 00:00:26.37\00:00:27.88 We are going to look now at the document that is titled, 00:00:28.62\00:00:32.04 A Providential Election. 00:00:32.07\00:00:34.29 You should have that in your materials, 00:00:34.92\00:00:36.86 A Providential Election. 00:00:37.10\00:00:39.06 And basically, we are going to study about the election 00:00:39.54\00:00:45.32 of the successor of Judas. 00:00:45.42\00:00:48.26 And there's a lot of important principles involved there 00:00:48.79\00:00:51.73 that we're going to bring to view. 00:00:51.76\00:00:53.22 Like the importance of biblical numbers, 00:00:53.79\00:00:56.33 the importance of sola scriptura, 00:00:56.44\00:00:58.52 the importance of finding Jesus Christ in prophecy. 00:00:58.88\00:01:02.36 All of those will be illustrated in this particular presentation. 00:01:02.39\00:01:06.53 We're going to follow the material quite closely. 00:01:06.93\00:01:09.29 You have it before you. That's my PowerPoint. 00:01:09.54\00:01:11.84 See, this is much better PowerPoint than projecting 00:01:12.12\00:01:15.02 it on the wall, because you can't take the wall home. 00:01:15.06\00:01:17.73 But you can take this written material home. 00:01:19.13\00:01:21.92 In the future, what we'll do is we'll probably do this 00:01:22.37\00:01:24.69 electronically to save a lot of trees. 00:01:24.72\00:01:26.84 Because several of you mentioned that you would like to have 00:01:27.28\00:01:30.79 this in electronic form. 00:01:30.82\00:01:32.13 And if you would like to, please make sure that you 00:01:32.16\00:01:34.92 give Aileen your email address. 00:01:34.95\00:01:38.42 And we'll make sure that you get it in an electronic form 00:01:38.45\00:01:40.50 so that you can use it for preaching and speaking. 00:01:40.53\00:01:42.29 I hope that you'll share these things. 00:01:42.32\00:01:43.91 Go back to your churches and you share this stuff, 00:01:44.02\00:01:46.48 and other people can get excited about studying the Bible 00:01:46.68\00:01:49.66 and studying Bible prophecy. 00:01:49.69\00:01:50.92 That's what it's all about. Not only for us. 00:01:51.02\00:01:53.08 You know, television audiences are going to be watching 00:01:53.24\00:01:55.40 this series, but you know, it can go a lot farther than that 00:01:55.43\00:01:58.72 if you go home and you share what you've learned here 00:01:58.92\00:02:01.45 and inspire other people. 00:02:01.48\00:02:02.93 The Sanctuary begins in the camp where sinners live. 00:02:04.12\00:02:08.56 Jesus came and camped with us and lived a life without sin 00:02:09.47\00:02:15.46 in our place. 00:02:15.49\00:02:16.71 In this way, He wove a spotless robe of righteousness 00:02:17.40\00:02:21.93 by His perfect life in the camp. 00:02:21.96\00:02:24.32 So Jesus wove the robe of righteousness by His obedience. 00:02:24.69\00:02:28.14 The law demands absolute sinlessness. 00:02:29.36\00:02:33.09 And we cannot offer this to the law. 00:02:34.23\00:02:36.26 So Jesus came to live in our midst a perfect life 00:02:37.14\00:02:41.20 in our place. 00:02:41.23\00:02:42.51 So His work begins in the camp by His perfect life 00:02:42.85\00:02:46.26 that can stand in place of our life. 00:02:46.29\00:02:49.21 Then we find the work of Jesus in the court. 00:02:50.80\00:02:53.53 The law demands our death, 00:02:54.52\00:02:56.36 because the wages of sin is death. 00:02:57.36\00:02:59.98 And all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. 00:03:00.85\00:03:04.25 In the court of the Sanctuary, Jesus suffered the death 00:03:05.12\00:03:08.99 that we should all suffer. 00:03:09.19\00:03:10.95 So on earth Jesus lived for us and died for us. 00:03:11.90\00:03:16.50 Lived in our place and died in our place. 00:03:16.53\00:03:19.45 Those are the benefits of His atonement. 00:03:20.24\00:03:23.32 And then Jesus resurrected at the laver. 00:03:23.98\00:03:27.91 We've already mentioned that. 00:03:28.55\00:03:29.93 And when did that happen? 00:03:29.96\00:03:31.47 That happened very early on the first day of the week. 00:03:32.00\00:03:35.46 So He lived in the camp for three and a half years. 00:03:35.78\00:03:38.08 Actually, longer than that. His whole lifetime. 00:03:38.11\00:03:40.28 But His ministry lasted three and a half years. 00:03:40.31\00:03:42.58 Jesus performed the work of the court. 00:03:43.13\00:03:45.85 In the court, in the... 00:03:46.55\00:03:50.56 I want to say, on Thursday in the garden 00:03:51.08\00:03:53.10 and on Friday on the cross... 00:03:53.13\00:03:54.98 And I might make a little parenthesis here. 00:03:55.18\00:03:57.19 Somebody was asking about the three days and three nights. 00:03:58.21\00:04:01.80 You know, most people think that the three days and three nights 00:04:02.98\00:04:05.58 begin from the time that Jesus was buried. 00:04:05.61\00:04:07.85 And the chronology doesn't work. 00:04:08.60\00:04:10.71 Even the inclusive reckoning does not work. 00:04:10.99\00:04:13.51 Because three days and three nights, if you believe that 00:04:14.33\00:04:16.64 it's from the time that He was put in the grave, 00:04:16.67\00:04:18.73 you only have, actually you only have Friday night 00:04:19.17\00:04:23.24 and you have Saturday night. 00:04:23.54\00:04:24.81 And as far as days, you have Friday, Sabbath, 00:04:25.43\00:04:27.49 and Sunday as days. 00:04:27.52\00:04:28.55 You only have three days and two nights. 00:04:28.58\00:04:30.21 So you have to include Thursday night. 00:04:31.30\00:04:33.31 Because that's when the passion of Jesus begins. 00:04:33.91\00:04:36.30 You see, the expression, "in the heart of the earth," 00:04:36.33\00:04:39.07 is a symbolic expression. 00:04:39.10\00:04:40.58 The heart of the earth is the furthest place from God 00:04:40.61\00:04:43.68 that you could go. 00:04:44.23\00:04:45.50 Jesus did not literally go to the heart of the earth. 00:04:47.08\00:04:49.63 He was buried above the earth in a cave. 00:04:50.37\00:04:53.45 So it's a symbolic expression that means the furthest 00:04:53.81\00:04:56.42 and darkest place that you can be away from God. 00:04:56.45\00:04:59.17 The darkest place would certainly be 00:04:59.37\00:05:00.77 the center of the earth, or the heart of the earth. 00:05:00.80\00:05:03.15 And the furthest place from God as well. 00:05:03.30\00:05:05.46 Now in the Sanctuary service, the lamb was alive 00:05:06.53\00:05:11.89 while the sins were placed upon him. 00:05:11.92\00:05:13.72 True or false? 00:05:15.12\00:05:16.22 True. 00:05:16.79\00:05:17.83 The lamb was brought alive, the sins were placed upon his head, 00:05:17.94\00:05:21.37 then he was slain for sin. 00:05:21.40\00:05:24.02 In the same way, Jesus in Gethsemane, 00:05:24.74\00:05:27.04 the sins were placed upon Him while He was alive. 00:05:27.24\00:05:29.61 Read the chapter, Gethsemane, in Desire Of Ages. 00:05:30.28\00:05:33.27 He could not see beyond the portals of the tomb. 00:05:34.07\00:05:36.24 He felt that separation from God was going to be eternal. 00:05:37.17\00:05:40.87 Ellen White, several times, says that He was 00:05:41.44\00:05:43.90 drinking the cup of the wrath of God. 00:05:43.93\00:05:46.31 He felt separation from His Father. 00:05:47.04\00:05:48.98 That happened while He was alive in the garden. 00:05:49.01\00:05:51.28 And then the next day He went to the cross and He died, 00:05:51.78\00:05:53.98 like the lamb died. 00:05:54.01\00:05:55.08 Are you with me or not? 00:05:55.11\00:05:56.20 So the three days and three nights include Thursday night, 00:05:56.63\00:06:00.23 which is when the sins of the world were placed upon Him. 00:06:00.33\00:06:03.44 In fact, Ellen White says that when He left the garden, 00:06:03.47\00:06:05.71 He was at peace. 00:06:05.74\00:06:07.15 The struggle was basically over 00:06:07.18\00:06:09.07 when He left the garden of Gethsemane. 00:06:09.53\00:06:11.37 Okay, back to the material. 00:06:11.57\00:06:12.75 That was just a little extra. That's a bonus. 00:06:12.78\00:06:15.05 So Jesus resurrected on Sunday morning. 00:06:17.14\00:06:19.66 And then after Jesus resurrected, He spent 00:06:20.17\00:06:22.93 40 days on planet earth. 00:06:22.96\00:06:26.38 Now have you ever wondered why Jesus spent 40 days 00:06:27.57\00:06:30.38 on planet earth between His resurrection and His ascension? 00:06:30.41\00:06:34.24 Two reasons. 00:06:35.04\00:06:36.29 They're given in Acts chapter 1 and verse 3. 00:06:36.66\00:06:40.31 I'm not going to read the verse. 00:06:40.97\00:06:42.26 But basically it says that, first of all, Jesus needed 00:06:42.37\00:06:45.50 to appear to different groups of people to give indubitable 00:06:45.53\00:06:50.00 proofs that He had resurrected. 00:06:50.03\00:06:52.06 In other words, it was proof that He had resurrected 00:06:52.47\00:06:55.55 by the post resurrection appearances. 00:06:55.83\00:06:58.20 But secondly, He stayed here because He had to 00:06:58.78\00:07:02.51 teach His disciples the things concerning the kingdom of God. 00:07:02.54\00:07:06.11 In other words, Jesus had to explain to His disciples 00:07:06.85\00:07:10.52 the prophecies that had been fulfilled in Him. 00:07:10.62\00:07:13.66 And He had to explain to them the prophecies that would be 00:07:14.61\00:07:18.15 fulfilled just a few days later on the day of Pentecost. 00:07:18.18\00:07:22.43 He had to explain prophecy to them. 00:07:22.46\00:07:25.48 He talked to them about the things concerning 00:07:25.51\00:07:28.44 the kingdom of God. 00:07:28.47\00:07:29.86 And then Jesus ascended to heaven. 00:07:30.76\00:07:35.05 John 14 verses 1 to 3 tells us why Jesus left. 00:07:35.95\00:07:40.90 It says there, Jesus is speaking, 00:07:41.19\00:07:43.84 "Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, 00:07:44.04\00:07:48.44 believe also in Me. 00:07:48.83\00:07:50.52 In My Father's house are many mansions; 00:07:50.92\00:07:54.35 if it were not so, I would have told you. 00:07:54.45\00:07:56.40 I go to prepare a place for you. 00:07:56.73\00:07:58.72 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again 00:07:58.75\00:08:02.47 and receive you to Myself; that where I am, 00:08:02.57\00:08:05.52 there you may be also." 00:08:05.73\00:08:08.04 And so Jesus went to heaven. 00:08:08.14\00:08:09.55 What did He go to heaven for? 00:08:09.58\00:08:11.03 To prepare a place for us. 00:08:11.58\00:08:13.11 How does Jesus prepare a place for us in heaven? 00:08:13.31\00:08:15.71 He prepares a place in heaven for us by His work 00:08:16.30\00:08:18.84 in the heavenly Sanctuary. 00:08:18.87\00:08:20.68 Just read the book of Hebrews. 00:08:21.20\00:08:22.88 There you have a full description of what 00:08:23.16\00:08:24.77 Jesus does in heaven. 00:08:24.80\00:08:26.11 Read the Sanctuary scenes in the book of Revelation. 00:08:26.51\00:08:29.42 It tells us what Jesus went to heaven to do. 00:08:29.72\00:08:32.33 He prepares a place by His work in the Holy and Most Holy places 00:08:32.47\00:08:38.58 of the heavenly Sanctuary. 00:08:38.81\00:08:40.87 And then when the 40 days ended, Jesus ascended. 00:08:41.41\00:08:45.48 Let's read about it in our material 00:08:45.68\00:08:47.70 in Acts 1 and verses 9 through 11. 00:08:47.90\00:08:51.73 It says there, "Now when He had spoken these things, 00:08:53.17\00:08:56.80 while they watched, He was taken up, 00:08:57.32\00:09:00.14 and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 00:09:00.54\00:09:03.54 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven 00:09:03.99\00:09:06.04 as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, 00:09:06.07\00:09:09.98 who also said, 'Men of Galilee, why do you stand 00:09:10.41\00:09:14.27 gazing up into heaven? 00:09:14.30\00:09:15.86 This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, 00:09:16.21\00:09:20.88 will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.'" 00:09:21.13\00:09:26.85 And so now Jesus leaves, He goes to heaven 00:09:26.88\00:09:29.85 to prepare a place for His people. 00:09:29.88\00:09:33.19 Now after the ascension, the apostles returned 00:09:34.21\00:09:36.95 to the upper room from the Mount of Olives 00:09:36.98\00:09:39.36 and waited for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. 00:09:40.01\00:09:43.52 During those ten days, we know that the disciples prayed, 00:09:44.30\00:09:49.03 they studied the prophecies, 00:09:49.50\00:09:51.99 they ironed out their differences, 00:09:52.02\00:09:54.28 they emptied themselves of self. 00:09:54.48\00:09:57.41 And in this way, they prepared for the outpouring 00:09:57.61\00:10:01.16 of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. 00:10:01.19\00:10:04.34 We know what the disciples were doing in the upper room. 00:10:04.54\00:10:07.48 But the big question is, what was Jesus doing 00:10:08.18\00:10:11.36 during those ten days? 00:10:11.39\00:10:12.99 We know what the disciples were doing. 00:10:13.09\00:10:15.02 But what was happening with Jesus during those ten days? 00:10:15.22\00:10:19.57 This is the central theme of the study that we're doing 00:10:20.02\00:10:23.77 right now. 00:10:24.17\00:10:25.44 Now let's take a look at who was present in the upper room. 00:10:25.72\00:10:28.98 The names are given in Acts chapter 1 and verse 13. 00:10:29.95\00:10:34.63 Let's read that verse to see who was present. 00:10:34.66\00:10:37.04 They're mentioned by name. 00:10:37.07\00:10:38.59 "And when they had entered," that is when they came back 00:10:39.37\00:10:43.07 from the Mount of Olives, "they went up into the upper room 00:10:43.10\00:10:46.71 where they were staying." 00:10:46.74\00:10:47.77 And now I'm going to innumerate them. 00:10:47.80\00:10:49.64 Number one, Peter; number two, James; 00:10:50.19\00:10:53.62 number three, John; number four, Andrew; 00:10:53.65\00:10:57.17 number five, Philip; number six, Thomas; 00:10:57.20\00:11:00.57 number seven, Bartholomew; number eight, Matthew; 00:11:00.60\00:11:04.30 number nine, James the son of Alphaeus; 00:11:04.33\00:11:07.43 number ten, Simon the Zealot; 00:11:07.46\00:11:09.94 and number eleven, Judas the son of James. 00:11:09.97\00:11:14.83 What strikes you as strange about this list? 00:11:14.93\00:11:18.17 There are only eleven apostles. 00:11:18.67\00:11:22.19 And so Peter feels that it is necessary to stand up 00:11:23.13\00:11:27.07 and explain what happened with the missing disciple. 00:11:27.10\00:11:30.94 Because there were individuals present there 00:11:31.76\00:11:33.91 besides the twelve. 00:11:34.11\00:11:35.90 Actually, Mary the mother of Jesus was there. 00:11:35.93\00:11:37.99 And there were others present there that perhaps didn't 00:11:38.02\00:11:40.47 know what had happened to Judas. 00:11:40.50\00:11:42.10 And so Peter now stands in the upper room 00:11:42.44\00:11:45.37 and he's going to explain what happened 00:11:45.57\00:11:47.76 to apostle number twelve. 00:11:47.79\00:11:49.59 And that's found in verses 18 and 19. 00:11:49.81\00:11:53.14 "Now this man purchased a field with the wages of iniquity; 00:11:54.44\00:11:58.70 and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle 00:11:59.11\00:12:02.71 and all his entrails gushed out." 00:12:03.16\00:12:06.41 Very vivid description. 00:12:06.69\00:12:08.07 "And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; 00:12:08.27\00:12:11.46 so that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama, 00:12:11.76\00:12:15.33 that is, Field of Blood." 00:12:15.36\00:12:18.01 Now as I mentioned, this might appear to contradict 00:12:18.84\00:12:21.48 the account in the gospels where it says that Judas 00:12:21.51\00:12:24.11 went and he committed suicide; he hung himself. 00:12:24.14\00:12:27.19 I want to read the explanation that is given by Ellen White 00:12:27.47\00:12:30.20 in, Desire Of Ages, page 722, where she reconciles 00:12:30.30\00:12:33.86 beautifully the story that is found in the gospels 00:12:33.89\00:12:36.69 and the story that is found in the book of Acts. 00:12:36.79\00:12:39.17 She says this, "Later that same day, on the road from 00:12:40.08\00:12:44.51 Pilate's hall to Calvary, there came an interruption to the 00:12:44.54\00:12:49.55 shouts and jeers of the wicked throng who were leading Jesus 00:12:49.58\00:12:54.28 to the place of crucifixion. 00:12:54.31\00:12:56.04 As they passed a retired spot, they saw at the foot of a 00:12:56.52\00:13:01.11 lifeless tree, the body of Judas. 00:13:01.14\00:13:04.49 It was a most revolting sight. 00:13:04.84\00:13:07.58 His weight had broken the cord by which he had 00:13:07.82\00:13:11.08 hanged himself to the tree. 00:13:11.11\00:13:13.15 In falling, his body had been horribly mangled, 00:13:13.66\00:13:17.70 and dogs were now devouring it." 00:13:17.90\00:13:21.09 And so he fell headlong, his stomach burst open, 00:13:21.79\00:13:26.04 and his entrails came out. 00:13:26.14\00:13:28.86 And elsewhere, Ellen White says that Judas was the largest 00:13:29.10\00:13:34.43 of the apostles, physically speaking. 00:13:34.46\00:13:36.98 He stood above all of the disciples. 00:13:37.22\00:13:40.04 And of course, they thought that he would be a great 00:13:40.07\00:13:42.08 asset to the church. 00:13:42.11\00:13:43.76 Even till the very end they thought he would be an 00:13:44.46\00:13:47.10 asset to the church. 00:13:47.13\00:13:48.56 Now after Peter explained what had happened 00:13:49.40\00:13:52.77 to apostle number twelve, he now says, "We need to elect 00:13:52.80\00:13:58.00 a successor for Judas. 00:13:58.50\00:14:01.56 We need to elect apostle number twelve." 00:14:01.74\00:14:05.49 And you know, I always wondered why they felt 00:14:06.08\00:14:08.73 it was necessary to elect apostle number twelve, 00:14:08.76\00:14:13.53 and why it had to happen before the outpouring 00:14:13.76\00:14:17.21 of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. 00:14:17.24\00:14:19.21 Those were questions that I asked of the passage. 00:14:19.24\00:14:21.62 You know, it would have been beautiful to start in 00:14:21.65\00:14:24.01 Acts chapter 2 with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. 00:14:24.04\00:14:27.05 And then having the Holy Spirit, now you have the story of 00:14:27.08\00:14:29.97 how they elect the successor of Judas. 00:14:30.00\00:14:31.92 Because now they have divine wisdom. 00:14:31.95\00:14:33.66 They have the Holy Spirit. 00:14:33.69\00:14:34.88 But why did they elect the successor before 00:14:34.91\00:14:38.40 the outpouring of the Holy Spirit? 00:14:39.17\00:14:40.89 Why was there an urgency to elect the successor? 00:14:41.51\00:14:45.00 Well, I discovered by reading the passage carefully 00:14:45.64\00:14:49.09 that the reason why they felt they needed to elect 00:14:49.12\00:14:51.48 a successor was because Bible prophecy required it. 00:14:51.51\00:14:57.27 Bible prophecy required that a successor be elected. 00:14:57.37\00:15:02.68 You see, there were two prophecies in the Old Testament 00:15:02.71\00:15:05.38 that made it absolutely imperative to elect 00:15:05.58\00:15:09.01 a successor for Judas. 00:15:09.04\00:15:11.33 Those two prophecies are mentioned by Peter in 00:15:11.77\00:15:14.19 Acts chapter 1 and verses 16 and 20. 00:15:14.22\00:15:17.33 Acts chapter 1 verses 16 and 20. 00:15:17.50\00:15:20.64 And we're going to skip verses 17 through 19, 00:15:20.67\00:15:22.96 because that is where Peter described what happened 00:15:23.06\00:15:26.30 to the apostle that was missing. 00:15:26.33\00:15:27.98 And so verse 16 says, "Men and brethren, 00:15:28.16\00:15:31.29 this Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit 00:15:31.67\00:15:37.21 spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas..." 00:15:37.24\00:15:40.68 So there was a prophecy spoken by David concerning Judas. 00:15:40.71\00:15:44.02 "...who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus." 00:15:44.55\00:15:48.78 And now let's go to verse 20, because it mentions 00:15:49.48\00:15:51.62 the two prophecies. 00:15:51.65\00:15:52.76 Both of them are from David. 00:15:52.79\00:15:54.90 Verse 20, "For it is written in the Book of Psalms: 00:15:55.46\00:16:00.48 'Let his dwelling place be desolate, 00:16:00.99\00:16:04.50 and let no one live in it.'" 00:16:04.53\00:16:07.16 In other words, Judas was not going to return to his home. 00:16:07.29\00:16:10.45 His house would be left desolate. 00:16:10.48\00:16:13.56 And that's Psalm 69 and verse 25. 00:16:13.80\00:16:16.43 And then Peter quotes Psalm 109 verses 7 and 8 when he said, 00:16:16.72\00:16:21.31 "And, 'Let another take his office.'" 00:16:21.34\00:16:26.68 So you see very clearly, prophecy predicted that 00:16:27.30\00:16:29.84 Judas would not return to his home, 00:16:29.87\00:16:31.82 his house would be desolate. 00:16:31.85\00:16:33.22 And prophecy predicted that it was necessary 00:16:33.58\00:16:36.34 to elect a successor. 00:16:36.38\00:16:37.68 I wonder, how did Peter know that these prophecies 00:16:38.34\00:16:42.11 applied specifically to this situation? 00:16:42.14\00:16:44.78 Jesus spent what? 00:16:45.63\00:16:47.33 Jesus spent 40 days teaching His disciples about the things 00:16:47.65\00:16:53.20 concerning the kingdom of God. 00:16:53.23\00:16:55.56 Jesus had explained to the apostles the meaning 00:16:55.88\00:16:59.67 of these specific prophecies from the book of Psalms. 00:16:59.70\00:17:03.88 Now sometimes in the Adventist church, we develop these 00:17:04.31\00:17:07.02 myths that are passed on from generation to generation 00:17:07.05\00:17:12.09 as gospel truths. 00:17:12.12\00:17:13.54 I'm not talking about the large doctrines of the church. 00:17:14.02\00:17:16.62 I'm talking about some smaller things. 00:17:16.97\00:17:19.56 Smaller details like, you know, the one that I mentioned 00:17:20.11\00:17:24.78 yesterday from Daniel chapter 12 and verse 4 where it says, 00:17:24.81\00:17:27.85 "Knowledge shall be increased." 00:17:28.09\00:17:29.91 And other minor things. 00:17:30.25\00:17:32.28 And one of those myths that is passed along 00:17:32.49\00:17:34.88 is that it was God's intention that Saul of Tarsus 00:17:34.91\00:17:37.98 be apostle number twelve. 00:17:38.01\00:17:39.77 But that the disciples jumped the gun. 00:17:40.45\00:17:43.22 In other words, the disciples were so anxious to elect 00:17:43.53\00:17:46.30 a successor that they elected the wrong individual. 00:17:46.33\00:17:50.20 That if they had waited a while, God would have shown 00:17:50.36\00:17:53.47 that He wanted Saul of Tarsus to be apostle number twelve. 00:17:53.50\00:17:57.68 Well folks, this is an unfounded myth. 00:17:58.43\00:18:03.92 And it has no biblical foundation. 00:18:05.03\00:18:06.93 I made up my mind a few years ago that I am not 00:18:07.99\00:18:10.81 going to simply repeat what is said or what I read. 00:18:10.84\00:18:16.40 I'm going to go to Scripture and I'm going to 00:18:17.01\00:18:18.87 study it out for myself to see if it is so. 00:18:18.90\00:18:22.49 Because even within the church, we pass on sometimes 00:18:22.89\00:18:25.62 these traditions as gospel truth. 00:18:25.65\00:18:28.32 And really they have no basis in Scripture, 00:18:28.57\00:18:31.18 or even in the spirit of prophecy. 00:18:31.21\00:18:33.14 Now there are four reasons that I want to share at this moment 00:18:33.60\00:18:37.66 why Paul could not have been apostle number twelve. 00:18:37.69\00:18:41.80 And towards the end of our study, I'm going to give you 00:18:42.13\00:18:45.33 an additional reason, a reason number five. 00:18:45.57\00:18:48.55 Reason number 1 is found in Acts chapter 1 verses 21 and 22. 00:18:49.24\00:18:54.83 Very clearly, the qualifications of the successor are given. 00:18:55.72\00:19:00.02 It says there in Acts 1 verses 21 and 22, 00:19:00.74\00:19:03.69 "Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us 00:19:04.14\00:19:08.78 all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 00:19:08.81\00:19:14.04 beginning from the baptism of John to that day when He 00:19:14.51\00:19:19.44 was taken up from us, one of these must become 00:19:19.47\00:19:23.47 a witness with us of His resurrection." 00:19:23.50\00:19:26.15 Question, would the apostle Paul fit in with this qualification? 00:19:26.18\00:19:31.60 Absolutely not. 00:19:32.09\00:19:33.23 The successor had to be with the apostles 00:19:33.80\00:19:37.12 from the time of the baptism of John the Baptist 00:19:37.40\00:19:41.29 until the ascension of Jesus Christ. 00:19:41.32\00:19:43.69 Saul of Tarsus was converted three and a half years 00:19:43.77\00:19:46.42 after the death and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. 00:19:46.52\00:19:50.43 So Saul, or Paul, is disqualified by this one point. 00:19:50.49\00:19:55.80 There's a second point. 00:19:56.30\00:19:57.66 And it's found in Acts chapter 1 verses 24 to 26. 00:19:57.92\00:20:01.29 Acts 1:24-26 00:20:01.32\00:20:04.27 Did the apostles follow the correct procedure 00:20:04.57\00:20:08.51 in electing the successor? 00:20:08.54\00:20:10.40 Yes they did. 00:20:10.43\00:20:11.48 It says there in verse 24, "And they prayed, 00:20:12.24\00:20:15.94 and said, 'You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, 00:20:16.20\00:20:21.13 show which of these two You have chosen..." 00:20:21.58\00:20:26.58 What are they praying? 00:20:26.61\00:20:27.91 "Lord, show us whom You have chosen, 00:20:28.42\00:20:31.52 to take part in this ministry, and apostleship, 00:20:31.55\00:20:34.89 from which Judas by transgression fell, 00:20:34.92\00:20:37.33 that he might go to his own place. 00:20:37.63\00:20:39.52 And they cast their lots, and the lot fell upon Matthias; 00:20:39.55\00:20:43.05 and he was numbered with the eleven apostles." 00:20:43.08\00:20:46.41 So did they follow the right procedure? 00:20:47.35\00:20:49.50 Yes they did. 00:20:49.75\00:20:50.92 Did they ask the Lord that He should show 00:20:51.12\00:20:53.92 which the successor should be? 00:20:53.95\00:20:55.98 Absolutely. 00:20:56.20\00:20:57.25 Now let's notice reason number three. 00:20:57.28\00:20:59.29 Ellen White has this comment in the book, Spirit Of Prophecy, 00:20:59.98\00:21:02.69 volume 3, page 264. 00:21:02.72\00:21:05.70 Very clearly, this statement indicates that they 00:21:07.26\00:21:09.72 followed the right process, and that the apostle 00:21:09.75\00:21:11.90 that was chosen was God's choice. 00:21:11.93\00:21:14.30 It says, "Two men were selected who, in the careful judgment 00:21:14.83\00:21:20.81 of the believers, were best qualified for the place. 00:21:21.45\00:21:25.30 But the disciples, distrusting their ability to decide 00:21:25.57\00:21:30.61 the question further, referred it to One that knew all hearts. 00:21:31.43\00:21:36.22 They sought the Lord in prayer to ascertain which of the 00:21:36.53\00:21:40.80 two men was more suitable for the important position of trust 00:21:40.83\00:21:44.78 as an apostle of Christ." 00:21:44.81\00:21:46.06 Now listen carefully. 00:21:46.09\00:21:47.34 "The Spirit of God selected Matthias for the office." 00:21:47.37\00:21:52.38 Was it the apostles who selected? 00:21:54.08\00:21:55.85 No. 00:21:56.22\00:21:57.25 The Spirit of God selected the successor of Judas. 00:21:57.28\00:22:01.97 First of all, Paul is disqualified because 00:22:02.42\00:22:05.40 he does not fit the characteristic of being 00:22:05.85\00:22:08.07 with the apostles from the times of John the Baptist 00:22:08.10\00:22:10.59 until the ascension of Christ. 00:22:10.79\00:22:12.53 Secondly, we're told that they prayed to the Lord 00:22:12.75\00:22:16.38 for the Lord to show which He had chosen. 00:22:16.41\00:22:18.77 Ellen White, in the third place, clearly says that 00:22:19.28\00:22:22.39 the Holy Spirit made the choice. 00:22:22.42\00:22:24.13 And the disciples were careful, they used careful judgment, 00:22:24.16\00:22:27.25 and they distrusted their own ability to decide. 00:22:27.28\00:22:30.65 There's a fourth reason. 00:22:31.22\00:22:32.50 And the fourth reason is that Saul was not to take 00:22:33.24\00:22:37.54 the place of Judas. 00:22:37.57\00:22:39.60 He was to take the place of Stephen. 00:22:39.63\00:22:41.87 Notice this statement from, Acts Of The Apostles, page 102. 00:22:42.73\00:22:46.79 See, you know, my name is Stephen Paul. 00:22:47.01\00:22:50.70 Isn't that interesting? 00:22:51.80\00:22:52.83 I have the name of the martyr and the martyrizer. 00:22:52.86\00:22:55.90 My parents wanted me to be like the martyrizer 00:22:57.41\00:22:59.81 after his conversion. 00:22:59.84\00:23:01.40 And I want you to notice, Ellen White is clear on this. 00:23:03.44\00:23:07.30 "A Mightier than Satan had chosen Saul to take the place 00:23:08.26\00:23:13.15 of the martyred Stephen, to preach and suffer for His name, 00:23:13.18\00:23:17.59 and spread far and wide the tidings of salvation 00:23:17.69\00:23:21.27 through His blood." 00:23:21.30\00:23:22.44 So was it God's plan that Saul of Tarsus 00:23:22.47\00:23:25.27 be the successor of Judas? 00:23:25.30\00:23:27.13 Absolutely not. 00:23:27.35\00:23:28.71 And the fifth reason is going to be the most definitive of all. 00:23:28.74\00:23:32.18 But we still ask the question, why the urgency 00:23:32.94\00:23:35.65 to elect the successor of Judas before the day of Pentecost? 00:23:36.00\00:23:41.59 Why not wait until the Holy Spirit was poured out 00:23:41.93\00:23:44.40 and maybe they had more discernment? 00:23:44.61\00:23:46.47 Why did they even need to elect apostle number twelve? 00:23:47.58\00:23:50.61 Well, the answer is in the significance 00:23:51.37\00:23:55.17 of the number twelve. 00:23:55.20\00:23:56.23 One of the principles that we're going to study later one 00:23:56.26\00:23:58.37 when we deal with biblical symbols is that numbers 00:23:58.64\00:24:01.52 in the Bible are extremely important. 00:24:01.55\00:24:04.28 Numbers have symbolic value. 00:24:05.09\00:24:07.58 The number 4 has symbolic value. 00:24:08.23\00:24:10.47 The number 40, the number 3. 00:24:10.50\00:24:13.37 We all know the number 666, the number 144,000. 00:24:13.57\00:24:18.11 Numbers have important symbolic significance in Scripture. 00:24:18.14\00:24:21.78 And we need to know what these numbers represent 00:24:21.81\00:24:24.55 in the totality of Scripture. 00:24:24.58\00:24:26.18 So the question is, why was it necessary 00:24:26.21\00:24:29.38 to have twelve apostles? 00:24:29.41\00:24:30.88 The reason is simple. 00:24:31.11\00:24:32.40 We have to understand the importance and meaning 00:24:32.43\00:24:34.96 of the symbolic number 12. 00:24:34.99\00:24:37.00 Now let's go to Revelation chapter 12 and verse 1. 00:24:37.99\00:24:40.59 Let me ask you, how do you suppose I found 00:24:41.22\00:24:44.46 this verse that we're going to now? 00:24:44.49\00:24:46.50 Sola scriptura. 00:24:48.70\00:24:51.39 You look up the number 12 in the concordance, 00:24:51.74\00:24:54.36 and then you see if they're dealing with the same themes. 00:24:54.39\00:24:57.30 And if they're dealing with the same themes, 00:24:57.83\00:24:59.49 you can connect the verses. 00:24:59.52\00:25:01.30 Are you with me? 00:25:01.33\00:25:02.36 Now, you're not going to connect two verses 00:25:02.39\00:25:04.45 that don't have anything to do with each other. 00:25:04.55\00:25:06.72 They have to deal with the same subject 00:25:06.75\00:25:09.49 in order to be able to connect them. 00:25:09.78\00:25:11.47 Now, the number 12 is very important. 00:25:11.85\00:25:14.24 Because you will notice that in Acts chapter 1, 00:25:15.20\00:25:17.95 it says that Judas was numbered with the apostles. 00:25:18.15\00:25:22.16 And then when Matthias was elected, 00:25:22.96\00:25:25.21 it says that he was numbered with the apostles. 00:25:25.31\00:25:28.98 So is the number significant? 00:25:29.01\00:25:31.24 The number is extremely significant. 00:25:31.69\00:25:34.86 There's something special about the number 12. 00:25:34.89\00:25:37.32 And let's go to Revelation chapter 12 and verse 1 00:25:37.60\00:25:40.06 to find out what the number 12 means symbolically. 00:25:40.09\00:25:44.04 It says, "Now a great sign appeared in heaven; 00:25:44.72\00:25:47.27 a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, 00:25:47.86\00:25:54.23 and on her head a garland of twelve stars." 00:25:54.79\00:25:58.75 Or a crown of twelve stars. 00:26:00.93\00:26:03.39 Now what does a woman represent? 00:26:04.08\00:26:05.77 The woman represents the church; 00:26:06.37\00:26:08.65 I'll give you half credit for that. 00:26:08.68\00:26:11.12 Because the woman represents the church, 00:26:11.78\00:26:13.66 but it really represents the faithful church. 00:26:13.69\00:26:16.77 It represents the faithful church. 00:26:17.30\00:26:19.65 Now how do we know that the woman represents 00:26:20.17\00:26:22.46 the saints, or the faithful church? 00:26:22.60\00:26:24.62 Usually what we do is we use, say, Ephesians chapter 5 00:26:24.83\00:26:28.69 where it says, "Husbands love your wives 00:26:28.72\00:26:30.33 as Christ loved the church." 00:26:30.36\00:26:31.52 And we say, "Well, see, as the husband, 00:26:31.72\00:26:34.89 the relationship between the husband and the wife 00:26:35.11\00:26:37.12 is illustrative of the relationship between 00:26:37.15\00:26:39.32 Christ and His church. 00:26:39.35\00:26:40.38 Christ, the husband; the church, the wife. 00:26:40.41\00:26:42.48 Just like you have the literal husband and his literal wife. 00:26:42.61\00:26:45.17 And so we say, "See, here the woman represents the church." 00:26:45.49\00:26:49.21 But we don't really need to go outside of Daniel and Revelation 00:26:49.95\00:26:52.85 to discover what the woman represents. 00:26:52.95\00:26:55.24 Let's compare two verses. 00:26:55.27\00:26:56.64 Daniel chapter 7 verse 25, 00:26:56.83\00:26:58.92 and then let's go to Revelation 12 verse 14. 00:26:58.95\00:27:01.74 Daniel 7:25 and Revelation 12 verse 14. 00:27:01.89\00:27:05.10 Daniel 7:25 is speaking of the little horn. 00:27:05.48\00:27:07.79 Which represents what power? 00:27:07.82\00:27:09.49 It represents the Roman Catholic Papacy. 00:27:10.28\00:27:12.43 "He shall speak pompous words against the Most High, 00:27:12.82\00:27:15.52 shall persecute the saints of the Most High..." 00:27:15.95\00:27:18.77 Remember that expression, 00:27:18.80\00:27:19.83 "...he shall persecute the saints of the Most High, 00:27:19.86\00:27:22.66 shall intend to change times and laws." 00:27:23.39\00:27:25.43 And then it tells us how long the saints will 00:27:25.46\00:27:27.20 be under his power. 00:27:27.23\00:27:28.27 "The saints shall be given into his hand 00:27:28.30\00:27:30.97 for a time, times, and half a time." 00:27:31.00\00:27:33.36 So what I want you to remember is, you have a little horn, 00:27:33.39\00:27:35.70 the little horn persecutes the saints of the Most High, 00:27:36.42\00:27:39.96 and he does it for time, times, and the dividing of time. 00:27:40.16\00:27:44.08 Now let's go to Revelation chapter 12 and verse 14. 00:27:44.62\00:27:48.83 And we'll read verses I think it's 13 and 14. 00:27:48.93\00:27:51.37 Revelation chapter 12. 00:27:51.40\00:27:52.88 Notice it says, "Now when the dragon saw that he had been 00:27:53.29\00:27:58.92 cast to the earth, he persecuted the woman." 00:27:58.95\00:28:02.34 Hmmm. 00:28:03.52\00:28:04.55 Who did the little horn persecute? 00:28:05.03\00:28:06.96 The saints. 00:28:08.70\00:28:09.78 So who does the dragon persecute? 00:28:09.81\00:28:11.74 The woman. So who's the woman? 00:28:12.41\00:28:13.96 The saints. 00:28:14.72\00:28:15.75 You say, "But how do you know this is the same time period?" 00:28:16.74\00:28:18.63 Well let's continue reading. 00:28:18.81\00:28:20.12 "Now when the dragon saw that he had been cast to the earth, 00:28:20.68\00:28:22.96 he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male child. 00:28:22.99\00:28:25.41 But the woman was given two wings of a great eagle 00:28:25.72\00:28:28.15 that she might fly into the wilderness to her place 00:28:28.18\00:28:30.61 where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time 00:28:30.64\00:28:34.38 from the presence of the serpent." 00:28:34.41\00:28:35.91 Same time period as Daniel 7:25? 00:28:36.70\00:28:38.92 Yes, but if you notice, in Daniel 7:25 00:28:39.27\00:28:42.96 it is the little horn that persecutes the saints. 00:28:42.99\00:28:45.49 In Revelation 12, it is the dragon that persecutes 00:28:45.84\00:28:48.65 the woman. 00:28:48.68\00:28:49.71 So the woman is equal to the saints. 00:28:49.89\00:28:53.01 And incidentally, when you connect the two, 00:28:53.42\00:28:55.11 there's a very important truth. 00:28:55.14\00:28:56.49 And that is, that the little horn is the emissary 00:28:56.59\00:29:00.33 of the dragon. 00:29:00.36\00:29:01.67 It is really the dragon who's persecuting the saints. 00:29:02.21\00:29:05.21 Because Daniel 7 speaks of the earthly power, 00:29:05.81\00:29:08.03 Revelation 12 speaks of the power behind 00:29:08.49\00:29:10.64 the earthly power. 00:29:10.67\00:29:11.88 Are you following me or not? 00:29:11.91\00:29:13.06 Now, so do Daniel and Revelation interpret 00:29:13.78\00:29:17.49 what is meant by the woman? 00:29:17.52\00:29:18.80 Yeah, the woman are the saints of the Most High. 00:29:18.83\00:29:21.63 The woman represents Christ's faithful church. 00:29:21.66\00:29:25.12 But now the question comes up, in Revelation 12 verse 1, 00:29:25.15\00:29:28.26 this woman who has a crown of twelve stars 00:29:28.53\00:29:30.54 when John see her in Revelation 12 verse 1, 00:29:30.57\00:29:33.19 is this the Old Testament church 00:29:33.39\00:29:34.96 or is this the New Testament church? 00:29:34.99\00:29:36.80 It's the Old Testament church when John see her 00:29:37.71\00:29:40.62 in Revelation 12 verse 1. 00:29:40.65\00:29:42.00 I'm not talking about later in the chapter. 00:29:42.03\00:29:43.85 But in Revelation 12 verse 1, it represents 00:29:43.88\00:29:46.52 the Old Testament church. 00:29:46.55\00:29:47.58 Because the child hasn't been born yet. 00:29:47.61\00:29:49.49 You can't have a New Testament church before the child is born. 00:29:50.07\00:29:52.80 Because the child is Jesus. 00:29:52.83\00:29:54.36 Are you with me or not? 00:29:54.58\00:29:55.62 And so you have the Old Testament church 00:29:55.94\00:29:58.31 who is crying out in anguish because 00:29:58.34\00:30:00.22 she wants the Deliverer to be born. 00:30:00.25\00:30:02.61 The Old Testament church longing for the coming of the Messiah. 00:30:03.77\00:30:07.20 And then, of course, later on the woman represents 00:30:08.92\00:30:12.16 the New Testament church. 00:30:12.19\00:30:13.45 By the way, it's just an extension of the same church, 00:30:13.94\00:30:16.15 because it's the same woman. 00:30:16.18\00:30:17.44 Right? 00:30:17.47\00:30:18.50 Because she flees to the wilderness for 1260 years. 00:30:18.53\00:30:22.37 Which means that's after the child is born. 00:30:22.40\00:30:25.14 And so the woman represents both the Old Testament church 00:30:25.17\00:30:28.12 and the New Testament church. 00:30:28.15\00:30:30.51 Now, what is represented by the fact that this woman 00:30:30.97\00:30:34.38 has twelve stars on her crown. 00:30:34.41\00:30:35.92 Does she have twelve stars on her crown 00:30:35.95\00:30:37.91 during the Old Testament period? 00:30:37.94\00:30:39.35 Before the child is born? Yes. 00:30:40.21\00:30:41.93 Does she still have the crown with twelve stars 00:30:41.96\00:30:43.92 after the child is born? 00:30:43.95\00:30:45.46 Yes, so she has twelve stars before and after. 00:30:45.59\00:30:48.17 Now the question is, what is represented 00:30:48.20\00:30:50.63 by the twelve stars? 00:30:50.66\00:30:52.18 Well, let's see what it represents. 00:30:52.79\00:30:57.15 Go with me to Genesis 37 verses 9 and 10. 00:30:57.65\00:31:00.61 We're going forward a little bit in the material. 00:31:00.64\00:31:02.51 Genesis 37 verses 9 and 10. 00:31:02.54\00:31:04.79 The top of the next page. 00:31:04.82\00:31:06.31 This is a dream that Joseph had. 00:31:06.98\00:31:09.45 Remember that Joseph was a dreamer? 00:31:09.48\00:31:11.48 Joseph had a dream. 00:31:12.40\00:31:13.78 And in that dream he saw sun, moon, and stars. 00:31:14.29\00:31:18.77 Does that ring a bell? 00:31:18.80\00:31:20.00 That's what you find in Revelation 12 verse 1. 00:31:21.09\00:31:23.28 See, you have to apply the sola scriptura principle. 00:31:23.31\00:31:27.40 So it says there in Genesis 37 verse 9, 00:31:27.59\00:31:30.47 "Then he," that is Joseph, "dreamed still another dream 00:31:30.57\00:31:34.01 and told it to his brothers, and said, 00:31:34.04\00:31:36.18 'Look, I have dreamed another dream. 00:31:36.21\00:31:38.68 And this time the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars 00:31:39.00\00:31:43.43 bowed down to me.'" 00:31:43.46\00:31:45.68 And you say, "It doesn't say twelve stars there. 00:31:46.48\00:31:48.20 It says eleven stars." 00:31:48.23\00:31:49.48 Let me ask you, who was star number twelve? 00:31:49.51\00:31:51.48 Joseph. 00:31:51.68\00:31:52.71 Joseph. 00:31:53.42\00:31:54.45 So what do the twelve stars represent? 00:31:54.48\00:31:56.41 They represent the sons of Jacob. 00:31:56.87\00:31:59.24 So let's finish reading. 00:32:00.38\00:32:01.61 It becomes clear in verse 10. 00:32:01.64\00:32:03.47 "So he told it to his father and his brothers. 00:32:03.50\00:32:06.10 And his father rebuked him and said to him, 00:32:06.57\00:32:08.92 'What is this dream that you have dreamed? 00:32:08.95\00:32:11.11 Shall your mother and I and your brothers 00:32:11.21\00:32:15.04 indeed come to bow down to the earth before you?'" 00:32:15.07\00:32:19.27 So the twelve stars represent the twelve sons of Jacob. 00:32:20.70\00:32:23.33 But the interesting thing is, that the twelve sons of Jacob 00:32:23.36\00:32:26.65 then multiplied and became a great nation. 00:32:26.68\00:32:30.20 The twelve tribes. 00:32:30.23\00:32:31.83 Let's read Genesis 49 and verse 28. 00:32:32.41\00:32:34.87 Genesis 49 and verse 28. 00:32:34.90\00:32:37.03 Here you have the twelve founders multiplying 00:32:37.30\00:32:40.80 into a great nation. 00:32:40.83\00:32:42.10 It says there in Genesis 49:28... 00:32:42.48\00:32:44.94 And incidentally, the context of this is that Jacob has 00:32:44.97\00:32:48.13 called all of his sons before him, he's about to die. 00:32:48.16\00:32:50.93 And he's going to give the characteristics of each 00:32:51.03\00:32:53.61 of his sons, the character manifestation of 00:32:53.64\00:32:56.20 each of his sons in the future. 00:32:56.23\00:32:58.11 And I want you to notice that after mentioning all of his 00:32:58.58\00:33:02.12 twelve sons and their characteristics, 00:33:02.15\00:33:04.00 we have this summary statement. 00:33:04.03\00:33:05.63 "All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, 00:33:05.93\00:33:10.35 and this is what their father spoke to them. 00:33:10.91\00:33:13.44 And he blessed them, and he blessed each one 00:33:13.47\00:33:16.49 according to his own blessing." 00:33:16.52\00:33:18.99 And so, the twelve stars, with regards to the 00:33:20.12\00:33:24.75 Old Testament church, represent the twelve founders 00:33:24.78\00:33:29.06 of God's godly nation in the Old Testament. 00:33:29.09\00:33:32.81 Twelve individuals that then multiply 00:33:32.84\00:33:36.38 and become a great nation. 00:33:36.41\00:33:38.49 Now let's go to the New Testament. 00:33:39.06\00:33:41.28 How many apostles did Jesus appoint? 00:33:41.65\00:33:44.56 Jesus appointed twelve apostles. 00:33:45.81\00:33:49.01 Notice I didn't say He chose twelve apostles. 00:33:49.21\00:33:51.96 Because Judas offered his services. 00:33:52.36\00:33:54.68 But Jesus appointed twelve. 00:33:55.01\00:33:57.11 Why would Jesus appoint twelve? 00:33:57.14\00:33:59.22 Do you think Jesus said, "Now let Me think. 00:33:59.25\00:34:01.14 Uh, what number can I choose? 00:34:01.17\00:34:02.90 Seven; perfection? No, no, I don't like that one. 00:34:02.93\00:34:06.10 Uh, four; universality? No. 00:34:06.29\00:34:08.68 Um, definitely not six. 00:34:08.92\00:34:11.62 Um, three for the Godhead? 00:34:12.04\00:34:14.98 I think I'll choose twelve." 00:34:15.18\00:34:16.57 Is that the way that He decided? 00:34:16.60\00:34:18.35 No, No. He's purposely choosing twelve. 00:34:18.72\00:34:22.05 Because they are going to be the founders of the 00:34:22.96\00:34:24.93 New Testament church. 00:34:24.96\00:34:26.47 Go with me to Mark chapter 3 verses 14 through 19. 00:34:27.06\00:34:30.61 Mark chapter 3 verses 14 through 19. 00:34:30.98\00:34:33.86 Very important. 00:34:33.89\00:34:35.06 It says here, "Then He appointed twelve 00:34:35.09\00:34:38.48 that they might be with Him, and that He might send them 00:34:38.78\00:34:42.88 out to preach, and to have power to heal sicknesses, 00:34:42.91\00:34:45.98 and to cast out demons." 00:34:46.01\00:34:47.71 And then notice, they're listed. 00:34:47.96\00:34:49.70 "Simon, to whom He gave the name Peter; 00:34:49.73\00:34:52.57 James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James, 00:34:52.75\00:34:56.01 to whom He gave the name, Boanerges, that is, 00:34:56.04\00:34:59.05 sons of thunder." 00:34:59.08\00:35:00.37 They must have had a violent temper. 00:35:00.40\00:35:02.24 "Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, 00:35:05.08\00:35:10.44 James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, 00:35:10.71\00:35:13.90 Simon the Canaanite, 00:35:14.10\00:35:15.69 and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him." 00:35:15.80\00:35:20.13 How many apostles? 00:35:21.30\00:35:22.64 Twelve. 00:35:23.15\00:35:24.18 Did the twelve apostles become the foundations 00:35:25.24\00:35:27.50 of the Christian church? 00:35:27.53\00:35:28.88 Did they go out and preach, and then multiply 00:35:29.93\00:35:32.10 and become a great nation? 00:35:32.13\00:35:33.48 Twelve spiritual tribes, so to speak. 00:35:33.87\00:35:36.22 Because we're dealing with spiritual Israel now. 00:35:36.81\00:35:39.06 Twelve spiritual tribes now multiplied from the twelve 00:35:39.49\00:35:42.98 individual founders. 00:35:43.01\00:35:44.86 Now you say, "Pastor Bohr, are you on the right track here?" 00:35:45.21\00:35:47.79 Well, let's see what the prophet had to say. 00:35:49.16\00:35:51.16 Go with me to, Acts Of The Apostles, page 19. 00:35:52.06\00:35:54.71 Listen carefully. 00:35:54.74\00:35:55.86 "As in the Old Testament the twelve patriarchs 00:35:56.83\00:36:00.81 stood as representatives of Israel, so the twelve apostles 00:36:00.84\00:36:06.21 stood as representatives of..." What? 00:36:06.24\00:36:09.80 "...representatives of the gospel church." 00:36:09.83\00:36:13.14 See, there it is clear. 00:36:13.95\00:36:15.13 So what is represented by the number 12? 00:36:15.55\00:36:18.37 The number 12 is the number of God's people. 00:36:18.64\00:36:22.01 It's the number of God's church. 00:36:22.04\00:36:24.08 Twelve individual founders, twelve persons, 00:36:24.39\00:36:28.69 then multiply and become the Old Testament church; 00:36:28.80\00:36:32.52 a great nation. 00:36:32.55\00:36:33.67 And then the twelve founders in the New Testament 00:36:33.70\00:36:36.51 multiply through their preaching and they form a large 00:36:36.72\00:36:41.04 nation, or New Testament church, which is a continuation of 00:36:41.07\00:36:44.88 God's plan for the Old Testament church. 00:36:44.91\00:36:47.83 So the number 12 is the number that is used 00:36:47.94\00:36:51.14 in connection with the church. 00:36:51.24\00:36:53.17 There had to be twelve, because the number 12 00:36:53.45\00:36:57.83 is the number of God's church. 00:36:57.86\00:37:00.05 If there were twelve founders in the Old Testament, 00:37:00.30\00:37:02.72 there had to be twelve founders in the New, 00:37:02.92\00:37:05.08 because the New Testament church is a continuation 00:37:05.11\00:37:08.24 of the legacy of the Old Testament church. 00:37:08.76\00:37:11.86 Now you'll notice, this is at the top of the next page 00:37:12.50\00:37:15.52 where it says, "Only One Woman." 00:37:15.55\00:37:17.04 It is important to remember that there is only one woman 00:37:17.49\00:37:21.20 before Jesus was born. 00:37:21.23\00:37:22.72 Right? 00:37:23.35\00:37:24.39 When Jesus was born, when the church was persecuted 00:37:24.95\00:37:29.48 for 1260 years, and when the final remnant is persecuted; 00:37:29.51\00:37:33.14 is it only one woman during all those stages? 00:37:33.17\00:37:35.39 Yes. 00:37:35.75\00:37:36.78 God has only one true church. 00:37:36.81\00:37:39.16 He does not have two separable peoples 00:37:39.26\00:37:41.20 with two different plans. 00:37:41.23\00:37:42.86 That's contrary to Daniel and Revelation. 00:37:43.12\00:37:45.42 There is no such thing as one plan for literal Israel 00:37:45.60\00:37:48.40 and another for the Christian church. 00:37:48.50\00:37:50.26 They form an indivisible unity. 00:37:50.29\00:37:52.67 Dispensationalists are totally wrong when they say that 00:37:53.54\00:37:57.39 God has two mutually separable peoples; 00:37:57.42\00:37:59.94 literal Israel and the Christian church. 00:38:00.33\00:38:02.68 Revelation 12 tells us that there is only one Messiah, 00:38:03.04\00:38:07.02 and there is only one people of the Messiah, 00:38:07.05\00:38:09.41 and there is only one dragon who is active in all of 00:38:09.44\00:38:12.36 the stages against the Messiah and the people of the Messiah. 00:38:12.39\00:38:16.27 And now we need to ask the question... 00:38:17.50\00:38:18.87 We know now why it had to be twelve. 00:38:18.90\00:38:20.64 You understand why it had to be twelve? 00:38:20.67\00:38:22.28 The significance of this symbolic number? 00:38:22.31\00:38:24.39 But now we need to return to our original question. 00:38:24.59\00:38:27.14 Why before the day of Pentecost? 00:38:27.37\00:38:29.50 Okay, they needed to have twelve. 00:38:29.60\00:38:31.24 Fine, that's alright. 00:38:31.27\00:38:32.53 But why did they need to elect a successor before 00:38:32.56\00:38:35.93 the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost? 00:38:35.96\00:38:38.70 The answer is found in what was taking place with Jesus 00:38:38.96\00:38:43.79 in heaven during the ten days that the disciples 00:38:43.82\00:38:46.84 were in the upper room. 00:38:46.87\00:38:48.03 Now we're going to take a peak into the heavenly throne room. 00:38:48.47\00:38:51.01 And we're going to find out that something was happening 00:38:51.71\00:38:54.02 during those ten days with Jesus. 00:38:54.05\00:38:56.17 You say, "What was happening during those ten days?" 00:38:57.90\00:39:00.43 Well, we need to go to Leviticus chapter 8. 00:39:00.94\00:39:04.33 Leviticus chapter 8 and verses 6 through 12. 00:39:04.64\00:39:08.47 Three things happened. 00:39:09.04\00:39:10.68 And I want you to notice what the three things 00:39:11.05\00:39:13.03 that took place... 00:39:13.28\00:39:14.89 I want you to notice the three things that took place 00:39:15.56\00:39:17.82 here in Leviticus chapter 8 verses 6 through 12. 00:39:17.92\00:39:21.40 Now Leviticus 8 has the type. 00:39:21.43\00:39:24.09 It has the Old Testament scenario, the Old Testament 00:39:25.04\00:39:27.73 picture, that is fulfilled during those ten days by Jesus. 00:39:27.76\00:39:31.71 In other words, we're going to study now the type, 00:39:31.91\00:39:33.85 or the shadow. 00:39:33.88\00:39:35.16 But if we understand the shadow, we're going to understand 00:39:35.54\00:39:38.78 what it represents in the future on a broader and larger scale. 00:39:39.05\00:39:43.02 What happened in the little tent in the wilderness 00:39:43.05\00:39:45.42 is going to happen with the heavenly Sanctuary, 00:39:45.65\00:39:48.61 which is huge. 00:39:48.64\00:39:50.01 You know the earthly Sanctuary was made to scale. 00:39:50.43\00:39:53.35 We don't know how large the heavenly Sanctuary is. 00:39:53.38\00:39:56.32 It's huge. 00:39:56.35\00:39:57.41 It fits millions and millions of angels, 00:39:57.44\00:39:59.91 so it has to be a huge place. 00:39:59.94\00:40:02.02 But we have the small scale model that we're 00:40:03.58\00:40:05.53 going to look at now. 00:40:05.56\00:40:06.59 And then we are going to look at what it represents symbolically. 00:40:06.62\00:40:10.43 So let's go to Leviticus 8 verses 6 through 12. 00:40:10.46\00:40:13.33 "Then Moses..." 00:40:13.92\00:40:14.95 This is before the Sanctuary in the wilderness 00:40:14.98\00:40:17.54 began its services. 00:40:17.57\00:40:18.70 This is before the inauguration. 00:40:18.73\00:40:20.59 This is the inauguration service. 00:40:20.62\00:40:22.41 It says, "Then Moses brought Aaron and his sons, 00:40:22.99\00:40:25.52 and washed them with water." 00:40:25.55\00:40:26.96 And now he's going to do something very interesting 00:40:28.15\00:40:30.21 with Aaron. 00:40:30.24\00:40:31.71 "And he put the tunic on him, girded him with the sash, 00:40:32.73\00:40:37.55 clothed him with the robe, and put the ephod on him. 00:40:38.17\00:40:42.53 And he girded him with the intricately woven band 00:40:43.15\00:40:46.02 of the ephod, and with it tied the ephod on him. 00:40:46.05\00:40:50.10 Then he put the breastplate on him. 00:40:50.64\00:40:52.86 And he put the Urim and the Thummim in the breastplate. 00:40:53.26\00:40:56.83 And he put the turban on his head. 00:40:57.39\00:41:00.06 Also on the turban, on its front, he put the golden plate, 00:41:00.45\00:41:04.49 the holy crown; as the Lord had commanded Moses. 00:41:04.52\00:41:08.17 Also Moses took the anointing oil..." 00:41:08.61\00:41:11.12 Now notice there's a second function that's 00:41:11.44\00:41:13.38 going to take place here, right? 00:41:13.41\00:41:15.13 What was the first function? 00:41:15.23\00:41:16.77 Moses clothed Aaron as the what? 00:41:17.16\00:41:22.73 The high priest. 00:41:23.06\00:41:25.34 The first task before the Sanctuary services could begin, 00:41:25.98\00:41:29.44 in the tent, Aaron had to be clothed as the high priest. 00:41:29.75\00:41:35.65 But then something else happens. Verse 10. 00:41:36.01\00:41:37.86 "And Moses took the anointing oil and anointed the tabernacle, 00:41:38.19\00:41:42.26 and all that was in it, and consecrated them." 00:41:42.29\00:41:45.42 Did he anoint the entire tabernacle? 00:41:45.45\00:41:47.83 Yes. Why? 00:41:48.08\00:41:49.11 It had to be set apart because Aaron was 00:41:49.14\00:41:51.74 going to serve in there. 00:41:51.77\00:41:53.17 Not only did Aaron have to be set apart, 00:41:53.64\00:41:55.86 the Sanctuary had to be sanctified or set apart. 00:41:55.89\00:41:59.46 And so it says in verse 11, "He sprinkled some of it 00:41:59.94\00:42:02.32 on the altar seven times, anointed the altar 00:42:02.35\00:42:05.12 and all its utensils, and the laver and its base, 00:42:05.15\00:42:07.82 to consecrate them." 00:42:07.85\00:42:09.07 And now notice the third function. 00:42:09.57\00:42:11.69 "And he poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron's head, 00:42:11.80\00:42:18.00 and anointed him, to consecrate him." 00:42:18.03\00:42:21.16 Three things. 00:42:21.70\00:42:22.75 Number one, clothe the high priest. 00:42:22.78\00:42:25.19 Number two, anoint the Sanctuary where the 00:42:25.22\00:42:27.79 high priest was going to serve. 00:42:27.82\00:42:29.33 And number three, anoint the high priest with oil. 00:42:29.36\00:42:33.32 Now you say, what does this symbolize? 00:42:34.67\00:42:38.09 Well let's go to Psalm 133. 00:42:38.45\00:42:41.61 It's a very short psalm. 00:42:41.64\00:42:43.05 Psalm 133. 00:42:43.83\00:42:45.67 And let's notice something very interesting here. 00:42:46.05\00:42:48.86 This is what I call, a Pentecostal psalm. 00:42:50.22\00:42:53.19 Not because it belongs to the Pentecostals, 00:42:53.96\00:42:55.92 but because it has to do with Pentecost. 00:42:55.95\00:42:59.00 And immediately you're going to see. 00:42:59.38\00:43:00.77 When we read the first verse, another verse is 00:43:01.22\00:43:03.78 going to come to mind immediately. 00:43:03.81\00:43:05.39 "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren 00:43:05.73\00:43:09.43 to dwell together in unity." 00:43:09.46\00:43:11.29 What verse comes to mind? 00:43:11.94\00:43:13.27 Is there any verse that comes to mind? 00:43:14.94\00:43:16.35 When the day of Pentecost had fully come, 00:43:17.23\00:43:19.72 they were all in one accord. 00:43:20.48\00:43:23.87 Brethren meeting together or dwelling together in what? 00:43:24.50\00:43:29.98 In unity. 00:43:30.24\00:43:31.28 Now notice verse two. 00:43:31.31\00:43:32.47 "It is like the precious oil upon the head..." 00:43:32.76\00:43:37.63 And I want you to notice, this is not just a little 00:43:37.66\00:43:39.30 trickling of oil like when we anoint sick people. 00:43:39.33\00:43:41.72 "...the precious oil upon the head, running down the beard, 00:43:43.87\00:43:48.03 the beard of Aaron." 00:43:48.73\00:43:49.78 Ah, now we know that this is reminiscent 00:43:49.81\00:43:51.54 of Leviticus 8, don't we. 00:43:51.57\00:43:53.05 "...the beard of Aaron, running down on the 00:43:53.42\00:43:56.17 edge of his garments." 00:43:56.20\00:43:57.23 Wow, this is a lot of oil to have it run down your face, 00:43:57.26\00:44:01.59 down your beard, onto your garments. 00:44:01.62\00:44:03.84 Even to the bottom of the border of the garments. 00:44:03.87\00:44:05.92 This is an abundance of oil. 00:44:05.95\00:44:07.67 And so it says, "...running down on the beard, 00:44:08.20\00:44:10.22 the beard of Aaron, running down on the edge of his garments." 00:44:10.25\00:44:13.31 And it not only runs down onto the edge of his garments, 00:44:13.68\00:44:16.80 but it says, "It is like the dew of Hermon 00:44:16.83\00:44:19.31 descending upon the mountains of Zion. 00:44:19.34\00:44:22.52 For there the Lord commanded the blessing, 00:44:22.55\00:44:24.33 life forever more." 00:44:24.36\00:44:25.39 Let me ask you, who was gathered on the mountains of Zion? 00:44:25.42\00:44:28.28 The twelve apostles in the upper room. 00:44:30.06\00:44:32.10 And so you have this picture of the oil being poured on the head 00:44:34.19\00:44:38.07 going down the beard, going down to the border of the garments. 00:44:38.54\00:44:42.84 And it's so abundant that some of the trickle 00:44:42.87\00:44:45.51 falls on the mountains of Zion, where the apostles 00:44:45.54\00:44:48.23 are gathered together in unity. 00:44:48.26\00:44:50.59 What am I saying, folks? 00:44:53.04\00:44:54.29 What I'm simply saying is that the Holy Spirit 00:44:54.82\00:44:57.50 that fell on earth was just a little trickling of the 00:44:57.53\00:45:01.32 gift that Jesus had received from His Father in heaven. 00:45:01.35\00:45:04.35 During those ten days, God the Father was clothing Jesus 00:45:04.90\00:45:09.89 as the High Priest. 00:45:09.92\00:45:11.36 Piece by piece, God the Father clothed Jesus 00:45:11.97\00:45:15.77 as the High Priest to serve as the High Priest of His people. 00:45:15.80\00:45:19.17 Not only was Jesus clothed, but then the Sanctuary 00:45:19.80\00:45:24.55 was set apart, or was sanctified, because that 00:45:24.58\00:45:27.93 is where Jesus was going to serve as the High Priest. 00:45:27.96\00:45:32.20 And then Jesus received from His Father... 00:45:32.44\00:45:35.06 You can read it in Acts 2 verse 33. 00:45:35.09\00:45:37.08 He received the promise of the Spirit of His Father. 00:45:37.11\00:45:40.13 And it was so abundant that it dripped down into the upper room 00:45:40.16\00:45:45.47 where the disciples were gathered together 00:45:45.50\00:45:47.34 on the day of Pentecost. 00:45:47.37\00:45:48.92 So where was the significant event? 00:45:51.06\00:45:53.51 The significant event was not on earth at all. 00:45:54.52\00:45:57.25 The earthly event was an announcement 00:45:58.12\00:46:00.56 that Jesus, the sacrifice of Jesus, had been 00:46:01.06\00:46:04.15 accepted by the Father. 00:46:04.18\00:46:05.80 He had presented Himself before His Father. 00:46:06.12\00:46:08.27 And He said, "Father, is My sacrifice sufficient?" 00:46:08.30\00:46:11.35 Jesus says, "Yes, it is sufficient." 00:46:11.38\00:46:13.50 And so now, the Holy Spirit, the Father gives Jesus 00:46:13.60\00:46:16.70 the promise of the Holy Spirit to pour out upon His disciples 00:46:16.73\00:46:20.52 so that they would have the power to proclaim 00:46:20.55\00:46:22.90 what Jesus had done and what He was willing to do 00:46:23.00\00:46:26.10 for each individual that comes to Him in faith. 00:46:26.13\00:46:28.61 Wow. 00:46:29.82\00:46:30.87 So is Jesus the High Priest? 00:46:31.25\00:46:33.08 Notice what it says in Hebrews chapter 8 verses 1 and 2. 00:46:34.24\00:46:37.61 "Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: 00:46:37.89\00:46:40.51 We have such a High Priest who is seated at the right hand 00:46:40.61\00:46:45.62 of the throne of the majesty in the heavens; 00:46:45.65\00:46:47.88 a minister of the Sanctuary and of the true tabernacle, 00:46:47.91\00:46:51.84 which the Lord erected and not man." 00:46:51.87\00:46:53.52 You see, that little tabernacle in the wilderness 00:46:53.55\00:46:55.60 was only a little scale model of what Jesus went to do 00:46:55.63\00:47:00.09 in heaven in the Holy Place. 00:47:00.12\00:47:02.12 Of course, we still haven't answered the question, 00:47:02.74\00:47:04.61 why did they have to elect a successor before 00:47:05.79\00:47:08.51 the outpouring of the Holy Spirit? 00:47:08.54\00:47:10.25 Now we're ready for the answer. 00:47:10.81\00:47:12.31 And we're going to have reason number five, 00:47:12.67\00:47:14.55 why it could not be Saul of Tarsus. 00:47:14.58\00:47:16.66 One of the pieces of clothing that the high priest wore, 00:47:17.18\00:47:22.74 and which undoubtedly Jesus wears in heaven 00:47:22.77\00:47:25.67 because He is clothed as the High Priest, 00:47:25.70\00:47:28.15 was what is called, the breastplate. 00:47:28.50\00:47:31.41 Now let's read in Exodus chapter 28 verse 21, 00:47:32.40\00:47:35.79 and then we'll jump to verses 29 and 30, 00:47:35.82\00:47:39.79 about the breastplate. 00:47:40.12\00:47:42.19 It covered the heart of the high priest. 00:47:42.22\00:47:45.15 It says there in Exodus 28 verse 21, 00:47:45.96\00:47:48.43 "And the stones shall have the names of the sons of Israel." 00:47:48.89\00:47:54.96 So what did the stones have, the twelve stones? 00:47:55.93\00:47:58.65 They had the names of the sons of Israel; 00:47:59.58\00:48:01.69 the founders of the Old Testament church. 00:48:01.72\00:48:04.21 "Twelve, according to their names, 00:48:04.49\00:48:06.73 like the engravings of a signet; each one with its own name. 00:48:06.76\00:48:11.64 They shall be according to the twelve tribes." 00:48:11.67\00:48:14.08 Do you notice that it goes from the names of individuals 00:48:14.11\00:48:17.16 to the tribes? 00:48:17.19\00:48:18.35 In other words, in the individuals is represented 00:48:18.71\00:48:21.05 the entire people. 00:48:21.08\00:48:22.64 And then notice verses 29 and 30. 00:48:23.81\00:48:26.54 "So Aaron..." Listen to this. 00:48:26.75\00:48:28.39 "So Aaron shall bear the names of the sons of Israel 00:48:28.42\00:48:32.12 on the breastplate of judgment..." 00:48:32.90\00:48:34.45 Notice, it's called the breastplate of judgment. 00:48:34.48\00:48:36.06 That's significant. 00:48:36.09\00:48:37.12 "...over his heart when he goes into the Holy Place 00:48:37.36\00:48:41.40 as a memorial before the Lord continually. 00:48:41.60\00:48:44.58 And you shall put in the breastplate of judgment 00:48:44.89\00:48:48.43 the Urim and Thummim. 00:48:48.46\00:48:50.08 And they shall be over Aaron's heart when he 00:48:50.11\00:48:52.92 goes in before the Lord." 00:48:52.95\00:48:54.17 Now here comes an important point. 00:48:54.20\00:48:56.82 "So Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children 00:48:56.85\00:49:00.83 of Israel over his heart before the Lord continually." 00:49:00.86\00:49:04.94 What does Aaron bear on his heart? 00:49:05.50\00:49:07.29 The judgment of the children of Israel. 00:49:07.39\00:49:10.06 Now what does that mean? 00:49:11.60\00:49:12.68 It means, folks, that when we come to Jesus Christ 00:49:14.14\00:49:17.14 and claim what Jesus did for us, we claim His life and His death 00:49:17.82\00:49:22.90 as our own. 00:49:22.93\00:49:23.98 The breastplate of judgment says, "I bore the judgment 00:49:24.69\00:49:29.51 that you deserve." 00:49:29.54\00:49:30.92 Jesus bears the judgment of His people upon His heart. 00:49:32.94\00:49:36.94 "If anyone sins, we have..." What? 00:49:37.78\00:49:40.21 "...an advocate with the Father." 00:49:40.24\00:49:42.26 When we repent of our sins and we confess our sins, 00:49:42.29\00:49:44.77 and we come to Jesus and say, "Jesus, I'm sorry I did this. 00:49:44.87\00:49:48.22 And I recognize I'm a sinner, and I confess my sin to You. 00:49:48.32\00:49:51.86 But Jesus, You bore the punishment, 00:49:51.89\00:49:55.51 You bore the judgment that I deserve. 00:49:55.54\00:49:57.77 Please, Jesus, take Your life and Your death 00:49:58.12\00:50:00.80 and place them to my account." 00:50:00.83\00:50:02.12 Then Jesus, with His breastplate, says, 00:50:02.22\00:50:05.58 "I bear your judgment." 00:50:05.61\00:50:08.80 What an amazing truth we find in the Most Holy Place. 00:50:09.77\00:50:14.27 Notice Isaiah 53 where we find this idea of Jesus bearing 00:50:14.56\00:50:18.78 the judgment of His people. 00:50:18.81\00:50:19.94 The very same word, "bear," that is used here in Exodus 28. 00:50:19.97\00:50:25.12 It says in Isaiah 53 verses 4 and 5, 00:50:25.24\00:50:27.60 a Messianic prophecy, "Surely he has..." What? 00:50:27.63\00:50:31.59 "...born..." That's the same Hebrew word. 00:50:32.62\00:50:34.82 "He has born..." 00:50:35.02\00:50:36.19 Where did He bear it? 00:50:36.22\00:50:37.48 On His heart. 00:50:37.78\00:50:38.88 His heart exploded on the cross, did it not? 00:50:38.91\00:50:41.58 When they, you know, pierced His side with the spear, 00:50:42.96\00:50:47.46 blood and water came out. 00:50:47.90\00:50:49.05 Because they pierced His heart. 00:50:49.08\00:50:50.64 And so it says, "Surely he has born our griefs 00:50:52.26\00:50:54.85 and carried our sorrows. 00:50:54.88\00:50:57.21 Yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted." 00:50:57.97\00:51:01.50 Did He bear our judgment, yes or no? 00:51:01.61\00:51:03.50 He sure did. 00:51:03.53\00:51:04.62 "But he was wounded for our transgressions, 00:51:04.87\00:51:07.26 he was bruised for our iniquities. 00:51:07.29\00:51:10.10 The chastisement for our peace was upon him. 00:51:10.46\00:51:13.38 And by his stripes we are healed. 00:51:13.41\00:51:16.95 All we like sheep have gone astray; 00:51:17.64\00:51:19.87 we have turned every one to his own way. 00:51:20.72\00:51:22.86 And the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all." 00:51:22.89\00:51:26.90 He bore our judgment. 00:51:26.93\00:51:28.35 And when He comes before the Father, He says, 00:51:28.38\00:51:30.37 "Father, don't look at Pastor Bohr. 00:51:30.40\00:51:32.09 Look at Me. Because I bore his judgment." 00:51:32.12\00:51:35.30 Wow. 00:51:35.84\00:51:36.87 No reason to be depressed. 00:51:37.61\00:51:39.45 We have to be happy people. 00:51:40.58\00:51:42.29 No reason to feel guilt if we have come and met 00:51:42.32\00:51:45.37 the conditions, and we've come to Christ. 00:51:45.40\00:51:47.16 We can have peace with God. 00:51:47.19\00:51:48.84 There's no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 00:51:49.40\00:51:52.44 You know, as Adventists we say, "Well, you know, I have to 00:51:52.57\00:51:54.79 wait until my name goes through a process in the judgment." 00:51:54.82\00:51:58.89 And we're always scared, you know, because our name 00:51:59.14\00:52:00.84 might appear before the judgment. 00:52:00.87\00:52:02.22 Well, we wouldn't be scared if we are in Christ. 00:52:02.29\00:52:05.52 If we constantly, through the power of God, are repenting 00:52:06.20\00:52:09.27 of sin and confessing our sin and recognizing our 00:52:09.30\00:52:12.38 need of Christ, we wouldn't have any problems. 00:52:12.41\00:52:14.55 And you know, there's some people who say, 00:52:14.58\00:52:16.12 like Desmond Ford, they say, "Well, you know, believing 00:52:16.15\00:52:18.78 that Christ takes the sins and puts them in the Sanctuary, 00:52:18.81\00:52:21.46 that takes away our security of salvation. 00:52:21.49\00:52:23.97 Because, you know, they're taken from us 00:52:24.74\00:52:26.64 and they're put in there." 00:52:26.67\00:52:27.70 But let me tell you something; my greatest assurance of 00:52:27.73\00:52:29.76 salvation is to have my sins in the Sanctuary, 00:52:29.79\00:52:32.90 and going in there through the blood. 00:52:32.93\00:52:34.60 Because if they're not there, they're here. 00:52:34.69\00:52:36.69 So you better make sure you put them in there, 00:52:38.08\00:52:39.84 covered with the blood of Jesus. 00:52:39.87\00:52:41.37 Our greatest assurance is to have our sins in the Sanctuary 00:52:41.50\00:52:45.03 covered by the blood of Jesus. 00:52:45.06\00:52:46.30 Because if they're not there, they're here. 00:52:46.33\00:52:48.24 Now... Thank you, brother. 00:52:51.12\00:52:52.60 I was wondering when you were going to warm up. 00:52:54.35\00:52:56.46 Now, let's finish this up. 00:52:58.31\00:53:02.82 How many stones did the breastplate have? 00:53:04.03\00:53:05.93 It had twelve stones. 00:53:06.48\00:53:08.47 Representing the twelve sons of Jacob. 00:53:09.75\00:53:13.94 But also the what? 00:53:13.97\00:53:15.24 The twelve apostles. 00:53:15.84\00:53:17.26 Remember the number twelve of the crown of the woman? 00:53:17.70\00:53:20.01 The twelve apostles from where a great nation grows. 00:53:20.15\00:53:24.66 Now, how many apostles were there on earth 00:53:25.37\00:53:29.84 when the disciples first met in the upper room? 00:53:30.61\00:53:33.02 Eleven. 00:53:33.91\00:53:35.25 But Jesus was going to be clothed with what? 00:53:37.00\00:53:39.80 He was going to be clothed with the breastplate 00:53:40.47\00:53:42.41 that had twelve stones. 00:53:42.44\00:53:43.93 So the question is, how could Jesus be clothed 00:53:44.39\00:53:47.53 with the breastplate that had twelve stones 00:53:47.68\00:53:50.28 if there were only eleven apostles? 00:53:50.31\00:53:52.62 It was necessary first to elect apostle number twelve. 00:53:53.59\00:53:59.00 And then Jesus could wear the breastplate 00:53:59.33\00:54:02.36 with the twelve stones. 00:54:02.39\00:54:04.16 There is a reason for everything in Scripture. 00:54:04.71\00:54:07.40 Every detail is important. 00:54:07.44\00:54:09.33 Nothing is wasted. 00:54:09.36\00:54:11.34 Nothing is a filler. 00:54:11.90\00:54:13.88 You know, every little detail has some nuance 00:54:15.86\00:54:19.21 connected with Jesus Christ. 00:54:19.24\00:54:20.75 Is this Christ centered what we've studied? 00:54:20.78\00:54:22.94 It all revolves around Jesus, folks. 00:54:23.09\00:54:25.71 All of these prophecies of the Old Testament. 00:54:25.74\00:54:27.74 Psalm 133, Leviticus chapter 8. 00:54:27.77\00:54:32.19 They find their fulfillment and their beauty in Jesus Christ. 00:54:32.51\00:54:36.56 Without Jesus Christ, they are totally meaningless. 00:54:36.59\00:54:39.59 Now one final point. 00:54:40.43\00:54:41.71 This is a beautiful thing. 00:54:43.29\00:54:44.65 The New Jerusalem is going to have people 00:54:48.23\00:54:52.19 from the Old Testament church 00:54:52.78\00:54:54.17 and from the New Testament church all together... 00:54:54.20\00:54:56.83 ...in one city. 00:54:58.37\00:55:00.22 Like you have one woman, you have one city. 00:55:00.46\00:55:02.79 You say, "How do you know that?" 00:55:03.41\00:55:04.58 Go with me to the book of Revelation. 00:55:05.31\00:55:07.30 Revelation chapter 21 and verse 12. 00:55:08.06\00:55:11.26 And then we'll read verse 14 as we close. 00:55:11.29\00:55:13.71 Revelation chapter 21 and verse 12. 00:55:14.02\00:55:17.94 Speaking about the city, the new, the holy city Jerusalem. 00:55:19.32\00:55:22.67 It says, "Also she had a great and high wall..." 00:55:23.25\00:55:26.73 And then what does it say? 00:55:28.55\00:55:29.86 "...with twelve gates, 00:55:30.20\00:55:32.43 and twelve angels at the gates, and names written on them; 00:55:33.61\00:55:38.46 which are the names of the twelve tribes 00:55:38.89\00:55:41.35 of the children of Israel." 00:55:41.38\00:55:42.98 So is the Old Testament church represented in the city? 00:55:43.80\00:55:46.31 Absolutely. 00:55:46.68\00:55:47.76 They're represented where? 00:55:47.79\00:55:49.24 They're represented on the foundations of the walls. 00:55:49.56\00:55:52.70 What about the New Testament church? 00:55:53.25\00:55:55.01 Let's go to verse 14. 00:55:55.26\00:55:56.65 "Now the wall of the city..." 00:55:57.36\00:56:00.05 By the way, previously it was the gates, not the walls. 00:56:00.91\00:56:03.75 But notice, Revelation 21 verse 14, "Now the wall 00:56:03.95\00:56:07.26 of the city had twelve foundations, and on them 00:56:07.29\00:56:11.86 where the names of..." What? 00:56:11.89\00:56:13.70 "...of the twelve apostles of the Lamb." 00:56:13.88\00:56:17.01 So the gates have the names of the tribes, 00:56:18.69\00:56:21.06 and the foundations have the names of the apostles. 00:56:21.77\00:56:25.30 So in one city you have all of God's people represented. 00:56:26.17\00:56:32.36 One city that gathers all of God's people from all ages. 00:56:32.39\00:56:36.98 The Old Testament church and the New Testament church. 00:56:37.01\00:56:39.76 God does not have one plan for Israel 00:56:39.87\00:56:43.22 and another plan for the church. 00:56:43.25\00:56:45.97 He just had one plan, and that one plan centers 00:56:47.03\00:56:50.05 on Jesus Christ. 00:56:50.08\00:56:51.76 In the Old Testament it was Jesus Christ predicted, 00:56:52.09\00:56:55.55 foreshadowed, announced beforehand 00:56:55.58\00:56:58.57 through symbols, through ceremonies. 00:56:58.60\00:57:01.13 In the New Testament, those ceremonies 00:57:01.36\00:57:03.84 find their fulfillment and their meaning. 00:57:03.87\00:57:06.36 And so do we have a message for the Jews today particularly? 00:57:07.17\00:57:10.84 They don't understand their own religion. 00:57:10.99\00:57:12.94 They're still waiting for the Messiah. 00:57:12.97\00:57:14.83 We have a message to say, "Folks, He's already here. 00:57:15.29\00:57:18.64 He already came. 00:57:18.88\00:57:20.24 Receive Him, and then you'll understand 00:57:20.57\00:57:22.69 what your religion is all about." 00:57:22.72\00:57:24.69 So the Scriptures are centered in Jesus Christ. 00:57:25.83\00:57:29.88 Not only the New Testament Scriptures, 00:57:30.24\00:57:32.30 but the Old Testament Scriptures as well. 00:57:32.40\00:57:34.77 What an incredible book the Holy Scripture is. 00:57:35.69\00:57:38.76 May we enjoy studying it and living it in our lives. 00:57:39.63\00:57:44.91
