Well once again, welcome to Anchor Bible school. 00:00:15.30\00:00:18.89 We're glad you're here. 00:00:18.92\00:00:20.10 Has it been an exciting experience so far? 00:00:20.26\00:00:22.46 Praise the Lord. You're not too tired, right? 00:00:23.05\00:00:25.20 Amen. Praise the Lord. 00:00:25.72\00:00:27.39 You must have gotten a good night's sleep last night. 00:00:27.42\00:00:29.74 I know I did. 00:00:30.14\00:00:31.18 But I'm glad to have you here. 00:00:31.74\00:00:34.43 And we have some exciting things to study 00:00:34.46\00:00:36.18 in this particular session. 00:00:36.21\00:00:37.69 I want us to go in our syllabus to the bottom of page 16. 00:00:37.89\00:00:42.15 The bottom of page 16 of our syllabus. 00:00:42.79\00:00:45.02 And I'm going to read this statement from Ellen White. 00:00:45.38\00:00:47.50 We're dealing with the principle that Christ is the center 00:00:47.53\00:00:51.13 of the Old Testament. 00:00:51.16\00:00:52.19 He's the Hero of the Old Testament. 00:00:52.24\00:00:54.22 Every text in the Old Testament points to Jesus Christ. 00:00:54.41\00:00:57.84 Ellen White caught this important point 00:00:58.40\00:01:02.55 in this statement from, Desire Of Ages, 00:01:02.75\00:01:04.58 pages 211 and 212. 00:01:04.61\00:01:07.27 This is what she says. 00:01:07.54\00:01:08.84 This is an audacious statement. 00:01:08.87\00:01:11.41 "In every page..." 00:01:12.11\00:01:14.52 How many pages? 00:01:15.34\00:01:16.67 "In every page, whether history, or precept, or prophecy, 00:01:17.47\00:01:23.04 the Old Testament Scriptures are irradiated with the 00:01:23.82\00:01:27.92 glory of the Son of God." 00:01:27.95\00:01:29.79 So what is the glory of the Old Testament? 00:01:29.82\00:01:31.60 Jesus. 00:01:32.40\00:01:33.63 "So far as it was of divine institution, the entire system 00:01:34.82\00:01:39.82 of Judaism was a compacted prophecy of the gospel." 00:01:39.85\00:01:44.53 What does, "compacted," mean? 00:01:44.56\00:01:46.07 Scale model, folks. 00:01:47.01\00:01:48.88 A compacted prophecy, see? 00:01:49.09\00:01:51.67 And then Jesus gives it breath when He fulfills it. 00:01:51.70\00:01:56.99 She continues saying, "To Christ 'give all the prophets witness.' 00:01:57.92\00:02:05.33 From the promise given to Adam, down through the 00:02:05.74\00:02:08.50 patriarchal line and the legal economy, heaven's glorious light 00:02:08.53\00:02:13.52 made plain the footsteps of the Redeemer. 00:02:13.80\00:02:16.59 Seers beheld the Star of Bethlehem, the Shiloh to come, 00:02:17.20\00:02:21.50 as future things swept before them in mysterious procession. 00:02:21.84\00:02:26.74 In every sacrifice Christ's death was shown. 00:02:27.13\00:02:30.93 In every cloud of incense His righteousness ascended. 00:02:31.12\00:02:35.37 By every jubilee trumpet His name was sounded. 00:02:35.56\00:02:39.48 In the awful mystery of the holy of holies His glory dwelt." 00:02:39.71\00:02:45.97 Quite a statement, isn't it. 00:02:46.79\00:02:48.14 And you read the book, Desire Of Ages, 00:02:48.86\00:02:50.82 it becomes very clear that Ellen White not only had 00:02:50.85\00:02:53.13 this in a theoretical sense, but the Desire Of Ages 00:02:53.16\00:02:56.39 shows Jesus in all of His glory in the Old Testament, 00:02:56.42\00:03:00.09 as well as the books, Patriarchs And Prophets, 00:03:00.12\00:03:02.19 and Prophets And Kings. 00:03:02.22\00:03:03.82 Now St. Augustine... 00:03:04.28\00:03:06.18 I don't like to quote saints that much. 00:03:07.91\00:03:11.94 Especially when they're human saints, so called. 00:03:12.15\00:03:15.31 But he said something I think that is very wise. 00:03:15.52\00:03:18.14 He said, "The New is in the Old concealed. 00:03:18.88\00:03:22.65 And the Old is in the New revealed." 00:03:23.98\00:03:26.21 That's a nice way to put it in a nutshell. 00:03:27.85\00:03:31.62 Now going to page 17, the Old Testament is not 00:03:32.33\00:03:36.40 abolished, but rather fulfilled. 00:03:36.43\00:03:38.99 Is there a difference between abolishing and fulfilling? 00:03:42.00\00:03:44.51 Yes. 00:03:44.61\00:03:45.67 Notice, let's change the word around 00:03:45.87\00:03:48.78 from, "fulfill," to, "fill full." 00:03:48.81\00:03:51.65 What does Jesus do with the Old Testament? 00:03:54.61\00:03:56.71 He fills it full of meaning. 00:03:57.32\00:03:59.47 To fulfill means, to fill full. 00:04:01.35\00:04:03.58 Jesus fills the Old Testament with meaning. 00:04:05.80\00:04:08.45 If Jesus had not come, the Old Testament would be 00:04:08.97\00:04:11.68 an incomprehensible riddle. 00:04:11.71\00:04:13.74 Jesus gives meaning to the Old Testament. 00:04:14.97\00:04:17.59 If Christ had not come, the Old Testament 00:04:17.76\00:04:21.38 would have no explanation or reason. 00:04:21.41\00:04:23.72 What would be the reason for killing millions of animals? 00:04:23.75\00:04:27.06 The Old Testament in itself has no light. 00:04:30.36\00:04:33.34 It's light is reflected light. 00:04:34.46\00:04:36.94 The Old Testament is a collection of stories, 00:04:37.95\00:04:40.81 laws, precepts, biographies, and events. 00:04:40.84\00:04:44.83 If the Old Testament were alone, it would be an enigma. 00:04:45.82\00:04:51.15 The Old Testament is like a light bulb. 00:04:52.05\00:04:54.86 Christ must give the bulb electric current 00:04:55.59\00:04:58.39 in order for the Old Testament to give light. 00:04:58.42\00:05:00.63 Now, the Jews and Christians commit the same basic mistake. 00:05:02.52\00:05:11.14 The Christians of today, they say, 00:05:13.38\00:05:14.89 "Well, we're New Testament Christians." 00:05:14.92\00:05:17.53 And the Jews say, "We're Old Testament. 00:05:18.51\00:05:20.47 Not Christians, but we go by the Old Testament." 00:05:20.67\00:05:23.06 Now actually when you look at it carefully, 00:05:23.73\00:05:25.72 both of them are committing the same error. 00:05:26.52\00:05:28.95 Because Christians don't see Christ in the Old Testament, 00:05:30.52\00:05:33.33 and the Jews don't see Christ in the New. 00:05:33.36\00:05:35.40 Let's read this statement. 00:05:37.57\00:05:38.88 Christ's Object Lessons, 128 and 129. 00:05:39.53\00:05:42.55 "There are those who profess to believe and to teach 00:05:43.53\00:05:45.90 the truths of the Old Testament, 00:05:45.93\00:05:47.42 while they reject the New." 00:05:48.16\00:05:49.39 Who would those be? 00:05:49.42\00:05:50.52 The Jews. 00:05:51.51\00:05:52.59 "But in refusing to receive the teachings of Christ, 00:05:53.36\00:05:56.38 they show that they do not believe that which patriarchs 00:05:56.48\00:05:59.99 and prophets have spoken. 00:06:00.02\00:06:01.34 'Had ye believed Moses,' Christ said, 'ye would have 00:06:02.18\00:06:04.86 believed Me; for he wrote of Me.' 00:06:04.89\00:06:07.54 Hence there is no real power in their teaching 00:06:08.20\00:06:11.43 of even the Old Testament. 00:06:11.46\00:06:13.49 Many who claim to believe and to teach the gospel 00:06:14.41\00:06:17.05 are in a similar error." 00:06:17.08\00:06:19.14 Who would those be? 00:06:19.34\00:06:20.52 New Testament Christians, so called. 00:06:21.73\00:06:23.57 "They set aside the Old Testament Scriptures, 00:06:23.99\00:06:26.46 of which Christ declared, 'They are they which testify of Me.' 00:06:26.49\00:06:30.08 In rejecting the Old, they virtually reject the New; 00:06:30.90\00:06:34.72 for both are parts of an inseparable whole. 00:06:35.43\00:06:39.54 No man can rightly present the law of God without the gospel, 00:06:40.23\00:06:44.53 or the gospel without the law. 00:06:44.74\00:06:46.73 The law is the gospel embodied, 00:06:47.21\00:06:49.81 and the gospel is the law unfolded. 00:06:50.46\00:06:53.48 The law is the root, the gospel is the fragrant blossom 00:06:54.01\00:06:58.95 and fruit which it bears. 00:06:58.98\00:07:00.84 The Old Testament sheds light upon the New, 00:07:01.48\00:07:03.93 and the New upon the Old. 00:07:03.96\00:07:06.16 Each is a revelation of the glory of God in Christ. 00:07:06.41\00:07:11.23 Both present truths that will continually reveal new depths 00:07:11.55\00:07:16.63 of meaning to the earnest seeker." 00:07:16.66\00:07:20.64 And so that's a very significant statement. 00:07:21.06\00:07:24.00 You know, people who say, "I'm a New Testament Christian," 00:07:24.22\00:07:26.23 you can't understand the New Testament without the Old. 00:07:26.48\00:07:29.03 And those who say, "Oh, I go by the Old Testament. 00:07:29.94\00:07:32.52 You know, I'm not a Christian." 00:07:32.55\00:07:33.59 Well, they can never really understand the Old. 00:07:33.79\00:07:36.28 Because the center of the Old is Christ, 00:07:37.03\00:07:39.00 and the center of the New is Christ. 00:07:39.03\00:07:40.72 So you can't accept one and not accept the other 00:07:41.16\00:07:44.27 without seeing Christ. 00:07:44.84\00:07:47.18 And so Christ is at the very center of Scripture. 00:07:47.96\00:07:51.61 Now I have a list of prophecies here 00:07:51.86\00:07:53.85 from the Old Testament about Christ. 00:07:54.75\00:07:56.98 I'm going to go through these very quickly. 00:07:57.18\00:07:58.65 I'm not going to mention the references. 00:07:58.68\00:08:00.24 You know, for those who are watching this streaming, 00:08:01.82\00:08:03.82 we've received several requests to have the materials 00:08:03.85\00:08:07.61 that we're making available. 00:08:07.96\00:08:09.64 And you know, if you beg hard enough, 00:08:09.84\00:08:13.15 we might accommodate you. 00:08:15.83\00:08:17.64 But I'm not going to take the time to mention 00:08:17.74\00:08:20.24 the specific verses, I'm just going to mention the events. 00:08:20.27\00:08:22.90 Because you have the verses in the syllabus. 00:08:22.93\00:08:24.83 The Old Testament says that Jesus 00:08:25.93\00:08:27.91 would be born in Bethlehem. 00:08:27.94\00:08:29.41 He would be born of a virgin. 00:08:29.98\00:08:31.50 He would be announced by a star. 00:08:32.13\00:08:33.90 Children would be massacred when He was born. 00:08:34.77\00:08:37.62 He would be called out of Egypt. 00:08:37.88\00:08:39.44 He would be baptized or anointed when the 69th week 00:08:39.73\00:08:43.15 of Daniel 9 ended. 00:08:43.18\00:08:44.82 He would perform marvelous works and be a powerful preacher. 00:08:45.03\00:08:48.16 The Jews would reject His message. 00:08:48.54\00:08:50.64 The Jews would serve Him only with their lips. 00:08:50.93\00:08:53.28 He would enter Jerusalem on a donkey in the 00:08:53.51\00:08:55.61 midst of great acclamation. 00:08:55.64\00:08:57.67 He would cast out the money changers from the temple. 00:08:57.85\00:09:00.68 Zeal for God's house would consume Him. 00:09:01.03\00:09:03.57 He would be sold for 30 pieces of silver. 00:09:03.91\00:09:06.36 His disciples would all forsake Him. 00:09:06.74\00:09:08.94 He would die a vicarious death. 00:09:09.29\00:09:11.40 He would say on the cross, "My God, My God, 00:09:11.73\00:09:13.96 why have You forsaken Me?" 00:09:13.99\00:09:15.07 That comes directly from Psalm 22 and verse 1, 00:09:15.10\00:09:17.59 the very words that Jesus spoke on the cross. 00:09:17.62\00:09:19.90 His hands and His feet would be pierced. 00:09:21.78\00:09:24.03 Lots would be cast upon His garments. 00:09:24.24\00:09:26.50 His heart would be poured out like water. 00:09:26.53\00:09:28.74 His enemies would spit in His face. 00:09:28.94\00:09:30.96 His enemies would dare Him to come down from the cross. 00:09:31.11\00:09:33.82 None of His bones would be broken. 00:09:34.10\00:09:36.06 On the cross He would say, "I thirst." 00:09:36.62\00:09:38.80 His passion would last three days and three nights. 00:09:39.18\00:09:42.80 His burial would be with the rich. 00:09:42.99\00:09:44.94 He would resurrect from the dead on the third day. 00:09:45.28\00:09:47.79 He would ascend to heaven, 00:09:48.03\00:09:49.76 and He would sit at the Father's right hand. 00:09:49.96\00:09:52.41 Do you think there was sufficient evidence 00:09:54.61\00:09:56.11 that Jesus was the Messiah? 00:09:56.14\00:09:57.55 Of course there was. 00:09:57.89\00:09:58.92 But reading the Old Testament without Christ 00:09:58.95\00:10:01.99 will lead you to wrong conclusions. 00:10:03.07\00:10:04.98 And that's the problem with the Jewish nation today, 00:10:05.01\00:10:08.35 those who have not accepted Jesus as the Messiah. 00:10:08.38\00:10:11.04 They have a veil over their mind. 00:10:11.07\00:10:14.75 And the veil is taken away when they see Jesus 00:10:15.26\00:10:17.86 in the Old Testament, when they see that their Messiah 00:10:17.89\00:10:20.73 is Jesus Christ. 00:10:20.76\00:10:22.13 You know, we say Jesus Christ belongs to the church. 00:10:22.69\00:10:25.58 No, the Messiah belongs to the Jews first. 00:10:25.61\00:10:28.54 It's their Messiah. 00:10:29.63\00:10:30.97 And when they see Jesus in the Old Testament, 00:10:32.47\00:10:35.68 the Old Testament suddenly becomes a light bulb 00:10:35.71\00:10:38.49 that when you turn on the switch, you say, "Wow. 00:10:38.52\00:10:42.05 We've missed our Messiah totally and completely." 00:10:42.78\00:10:46.64 And Ellen White states that in the end time, 00:10:46.85\00:10:49.87 there will be thousands upon thousands of Jews 00:10:50.54\00:10:54.15 that will accept the message of the remnant 00:10:54.29\00:10:57.18 and come over to the Lord's side. 00:10:57.21\00:10:58.76 And so we love the Jews. 00:10:59.28\00:11:02.24 We love them because, you know, through this nation 00:11:03.01\00:11:05.91 God brought the oracles of God to us. 00:11:05.94\00:11:08.22 God loves them. 00:11:08.70\00:11:10.05 And we need to pray for them that they will see the light, 00:11:11.05\00:11:14.18 that they will see the reason for their own religion. 00:11:14.21\00:11:16.54 They don't have a reason for their religion. 00:11:17.37\00:11:19.25 What was the purpose of all of the sacrifices? 00:11:20.56\00:11:23.16 What was the purpose of all of the incense? 00:11:24.10\00:11:26.26 What is the meaning of the Hebrew feasts? 00:11:27.19\00:11:29.23 What does the Sanctuary teach? 00:11:30.20\00:11:32.14 Totally in the dark until you see that Jesus fulfills 00:11:32.93\00:11:36.92 everything, and say, "Wow, look what I've been missing." 00:11:36.95\00:11:39.81 Now, what I want us to do is go to the material, 00:11:41.06\00:11:43.62 "The Lord is Our Rock." 00:11:44.03\00:11:46.88 "The Lord is Our Rock." 00:11:47.53\00:11:49.15 I'm going to illustrate now the steps that we need to follow 00:11:51.45\00:11:57.41 in finding Christ in a particular passage 00:11:57.61\00:12:00.75 from the Old Testament, or a particular symbol 00:12:00.78\00:12:03.42 in the Old Testament. 00:12:03.45\00:12:04.78 And we're going to go through this material, 00:12:05.36\00:12:07.06 "The Lord is Our Rock," and we're going to see 00:12:07.48\00:12:10.29 several principles involved here. 00:12:10.32\00:12:11.83 We're going to see the principle of sola scriptura. 00:12:11.86\00:12:14.09 We're going to see Christ at the center. 00:12:14.33\00:12:16.27 We're going to see the importance of the 00:12:16.98\00:12:18.45 study of structure. 00:12:18.48\00:12:20.11 We're going to look at several principles here. 00:12:20.14\00:12:21.94 And I'll bring them out as we go along. 00:12:21.97\00:12:24.84 Now there is an intimate connection between 00:12:26.59\00:12:31.54 what Jesus did on the cross and the fire that fell 00:12:31.99\00:12:36.55 on the day of Pentecost. 00:12:36.58\00:12:38.06 You cannot understand the fire unless you understand the cross. 00:12:38.95\00:12:43.29 So the first thing that I want us to notice is that there's a 00:12:43.88\00:12:46.70 very close link between the cross and the fire that 00:12:46.73\00:12:50.26 descended on the day of Pentecost. 00:12:50.29\00:12:52.35 The second point that I want to underline 00:12:52.87\00:12:55.11 is that the important thing that took place on the 00:12:55.58\00:12:58.99 day of Pentecost was not what happened on earth. 00:12:59.02\00:13:01.63 The important event took place in heaven. 00:13:02.64\00:13:04.71 And what took place on earth was simply the announcement 00:13:05.50\00:13:08.56 of what was taking place in heaven. 00:13:08.59\00:13:10.09 In fact, do you know that every time that Jesus begins 00:13:10.48\00:13:13.25 a new work in the Sanctuary, there's an earthly announcement? 00:13:13.28\00:13:17.11 Let me ask you, when Jesus came to the camp to camp with us, 00:13:18.24\00:13:22.78 was it announced? 00:13:22.81\00:13:24.23 Remember the angels singing, "Glory to God in the highest." 00:13:25.37\00:13:28.98 Remember the wise men who came? 00:13:29.32\00:13:31.19 They announced that the Messiah had been born. 00:13:31.70\00:13:33.84 There was an earthly announcement. 00:13:33.87\00:13:35.35 When Jesus was about to go to the cross, 00:13:36.05\00:13:38.30 was there an announcement? 00:13:39.32\00:13:40.85 Remember the triumphal entry, 00:13:42.04\00:13:43.84 a little less than a week before Jesus died on the cross? 00:13:45.39\00:13:47.99 The purpose was to attract the attention of everybody. 00:13:48.02\00:13:50.87 Are you following me or not? 00:13:52.88\00:13:54.36 When Jesus was going to begin His work in the Holy Place 00:13:54.84\00:13:59.01 of the Sanctuary, was there an earthly announcement? 00:13:59.04\00:14:01.50 Of course there was. 00:14:02.82\00:14:04.11 There was a mighty rushing wind, and there were tongues of fire, 00:14:04.14\00:14:07.48 and the place shook. 00:14:07.51\00:14:08.98 There were tremendous phenomena that took place on earth. 00:14:10.95\00:14:14.31 But that was an announcement of something that 00:14:14.52\00:14:16.07 Jesus had begun to do in heaven. 00:14:16.10\00:14:17.68 And let me ask you, leading up to 1844, 00:14:19.00\00:14:21.32 was there an earthly announcement? 00:14:21.35\00:14:22.95 Oh, yes there was. 00:14:23.68\00:14:24.71 The Millerite movement was announcing that Jesus was 00:14:24.74\00:14:28.00 about to enter a new phase of His ministry in the 00:14:28.03\00:14:29.85 heavenly Sanctuary in the Most Holy Place. 00:14:29.88\00:14:32.05 See, there's always an announcement 00:14:32.65\00:14:34.23 when Jesus is going to move into a new phase of His work. 00:14:34.26\00:14:38.17 Is there going to be an announcement 00:14:38.66\00:14:40.09 when the judgment of the living is about to begin? 00:14:40.12\00:14:42.48 The loud cry will be the announcement that the 00:14:44.06\00:14:47.95 judgment of the living is either beginning or about to begin. 00:14:47.98\00:14:52.66 Because the Sabbath issue will be the issue 00:14:52.87\00:14:55.68 that will determine who is on one side or who is on the other. 00:14:55.71\00:14:58.91 So there will be this powerful loud cry announcement on earth 00:15:00.32\00:15:03.84 announcing that the judgment of the living 00:15:03.87\00:15:06.04 is either beginning or is about to begin. 00:15:06.99\00:15:08.72 There's no date attached. 00:15:08.75\00:15:10.70 But we can know when thousands of people 00:15:12.02\00:15:15.50 are leaving their churches and joining the remnant church. 00:15:15.53\00:15:18.78 We know that the final movements are going to be 00:15:18.98\00:15:22.26 very, very rapid ones. 00:15:22.29\00:15:24.29 So two things. 00:15:24.58\00:15:25.85 Number one, there's a connection between the cross and the fire. 00:15:25.88\00:15:28.74 And number two, the important event was not on earth. 00:15:29.04\00:15:32.05 The important event was in heaven. 00:15:32.08\00:15:33.44 The earthly event was simply an announcement 00:15:33.47\00:15:35.68 of something that was happening in heaven. 00:15:35.71\00:15:37.56 Now let's go to the next section in our material. 00:15:37.59\00:15:42.42 And I want to show you the connection between 00:15:42.92\00:15:45.48 the sacrifice and the fire. 00:15:46.00\00:15:48.32 There's this pattern in the Old Testament 00:15:48.89\00:15:50.73 where you have a sacrifice, and then God consumes 00:15:51.87\00:15:55.61 the sacrifice with fire. 00:15:55.64\00:15:57.32 There's this pattern that I want us to notice. 00:15:57.35\00:15:59.81 The first example is Abel's sacrifice. 00:16:00.19\00:16:02.68 Now the Bible doesn't mention specifically 00:16:03.47\00:16:06.06 that God sent fire to consume Abel's sacrifice. 00:16:06.49\00:16:09.91 But it stands to reason when we look at all of the other 00:16:10.27\00:16:12.82 examples in the Old Testament. 00:16:12.85\00:16:14.19 That's the way that God showed that He accepted a sacrifice. 00:16:14.22\00:16:16.63 So I'm going to read this statement from Ellen White, 00:16:16.66\00:16:18.70 Signs Of The Times, February 6, 1879, 00:16:18.90\00:16:21.78 where Ellen White explains that "God had respect 00:16:22.35\00:16:25.93 unto this sacrifice," that is unto Abel's sacrifice, 00:16:25.96\00:16:29.61 "and fire came down from Heaven and consumed it." 00:16:29.64\00:16:32.78 How did God show that He accepted Abel's sacrifice 00:16:33.04\00:16:36.24 and not Cain's sacrifice? 00:16:36.27\00:16:38.11 Because He consumed the sacrifice that was 00:16:38.36\00:16:41.87 offered by Abel. 00:16:41.90\00:16:43.89 Sacrifice; fire. 00:16:44.13\00:16:46.40 The next example that I want to give is when the wilderness 00:16:46.96\00:16:50.70 tabernacle was inaugurated in the desert. 00:16:50.73\00:16:53.45 Let's read Leviticus 9 verses 22 to 24. 00:16:54.20\00:16:57.58 "Then Aaron lifted his hand toward the people, blessed them, 00:16:58.24\00:17:01.13 and came down from offering the..." 00:17:01.16\00:17:02.85 Notice, three offerings. 00:17:02.88\00:17:04.11 "...the sin offering, the burnt offering, and peace offerings. 00:17:04.14\00:17:07.97 And Moses and Aaron went into the tabernacle of meeting, 00:17:08.36\00:17:11.17 and came out and blessed the people. 00:17:11.20\00:17:13.18 Then the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people..." 00:17:13.39\00:17:15.88 And now notice, how did God show that He accepted these 00:17:15.91\00:17:18.90 three sacrifices that were placed upon the altar? 00:17:18.93\00:17:21.56 Verse 24, "...and fire came out from before the Lord 00:17:22.23\00:17:26.11 and consumed the burnt offering and the fat on the altar. 00:17:26.14\00:17:30.08 When all the people saw it, they shouted 00:17:30.11\00:17:32.04 and fell on their faces." 00:17:32.07\00:17:33.34 So how did God show that He accepted these sacrifices 00:17:33.37\00:17:36.19 upon the altar? 00:17:36.22\00:17:37.28 By consuming them with fire. 00:17:37.31\00:17:39.03 Sacrifice; fire. 00:17:39.30\00:17:41.27 The next example I want to give is from the 00:17:41.90\00:17:43.85 period of the Hebrew monarchy, the period of the Hebrew kings. 00:17:43.88\00:17:47.39 1 Chronicles 21:26 00:17:47.42\00:17:49.05 You remember that the ark of the covenant 00:17:49.08\00:17:50.96 was placed on Ornan's threshing floor for a while 00:17:51.07\00:17:53.98 before it was taken to Jerusalem 00:17:54.01\00:17:55.35 after it was recovered from the Philistines. 00:17:55.38\00:17:58.18 And I want you to notice that David offered a sacrifice, 00:17:58.59\00:18:01.79 and then something happened. 00:18:02.15\00:18:03.38 Let's read it, 1 Chronicles chapter 21 and verse 26. 00:18:03.41\00:18:07.22 "And David built there an altar to the Lord, 00:18:07.58\00:18:10.28 and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, 00:18:10.95\00:18:15.13 and called on the Lord. 00:18:15.16\00:18:17.24 And He answered him from heaven by fire 00:18:17.63\00:18:21.25 on the altar of burnt offering." 00:18:21.28\00:18:23.23 Once again, sacrifice, and then what? 00:18:23.67\00:18:26.38 Fire, showing that God accepted the sacrifice. 00:18:26.41\00:18:29.52 The next example I want to give is when the temple 00:18:29.96\00:18:33.23 built by Solomon was dedicated. 00:18:33.26\00:18:35.91 Notice I did not say, "Solomon's temple." 00:18:35.94\00:18:37.89 Because it wasn't Solomon's temple. 00:18:37.92\00:18:39.59 Neither was the ark, Noah's ark. 00:18:40.41\00:18:43.31 Nor was Jacob's ladder Jacob's. 00:18:43.97\00:18:46.76 It's the Lord's ladder, it's the Lord's ark, 00:18:47.58\00:18:50.03 and it's the Lord's temple. 00:18:50.06\00:18:51.54 So when the temple built by Solomon was dedicated, 00:18:52.24\00:18:56.12 I want you to notice what happened, according to 00:18:56.22\00:18:58.17 2 Chronicles chapter 7 and verse 1. 00:18:58.20\00:19:00.80 "When Solomon had finished praying, fire came down 00:19:01.70\00:19:06.19 from heaven and consumed the burnt offering 00:19:06.22\00:19:09.52 and the sacrifices; and the glory of the Lord 00:19:09.55\00:19:12.81 filled the temple." 00:19:12.84\00:19:14.19 Once again, sacrifice, and then what? 00:19:14.22\00:19:17.24 Fire. 00:19:17.40\00:19:18.43 So there's this pattern. 00:19:18.63\00:19:19.79 Sacrifice; fire. Sacrifice; fire. 00:19:19.82\00:19:22.26 Let's go to one further example. 00:19:22.29\00:19:24.24 1 Kings chapter 18 and verse 38, 1 Kings chapter 18 and verse 38. 00:19:24.27\00:19:31.01 This is the experience of Elijah on Mount Carmel. 00:19:31.25\00:19:35.42 You remember that he put the sacrifices, the animals, 00:19:37.04\00:19:39.70 upon the altar. 00:19:39.73\00:19:40.77 And I want you to notice how God responded to his plea. 00:19:40.80\00:19:44.73 And of course, we all know this story. 00:19:44.88\00:19:46.57 It says, "Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed 00:19:46.60\00:19:51.01 the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones 00:19:51.04\00:19:53.60 and the dust, and it licked up the water 00:19:53.63\00:19:55.79 that was in the trench. 00:19:55.82\00:19:56.91 Now when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces 00:19:56.94\00:20:00.03 and they said, 'The Lord, He is God! 00:20:00.06\00:20:02.41 The Lord, He is God!'" 00:20:02.44\00:20:04.17 So you have this pattern of sacrifice, and then fire, 00:20:04.83\00:20:09.15 showing that God accepted the sacrifice. 00:20:09.18\00:20:12.45 Now what I want us to do is to look at a different symbolism 00:20:13.30\00:20:16.11 that teaches the same lesson. 00:20:16.14\00:20:17.78 You see, there's the idea that the sacrifice is accepted 00:20:18.82\00:20:23.13 by the Lord because of the fire. 00:20:23.16\00:20:25.14 But now let's look at another symbol that teaches 00:20:25.48\00:20:28.94 the same lesson. 00:20:28.97\00:20:30.28 I'm referring to the rock from which water came 00:20:31.03\00:20:35.13 in the Old Testament. 00:20:35.33\00:20:36.71 So let's go in our Bibles to Exodus chapter 17 00:20:37.30\00:20:40.46 and verses 1 through 6. 00:20:40.49\00:20:42.01 Exodus 17 and verses 1 through 6. 00:20:42.04\00:20:44.87 There are two rock episodes in the Old Testament. 00:20:45.87\00:20:49.21 And each of them teaches a very important lesson. 00:20:49.69\00:20:52.26 Exodus 17:1-6 00:20:52.66\00:20:54.56 You're going to see in a minute how this symbolism 00:20:54.67\00:20:57.98 relates to the symbolism of sacrifice and fire. 00:20:58.01\00:21:00.67 It's the same lesson, but with different symbols. 00:21:00.70\00:21:03.60 Exodus 17 verse 1 says, "Then all the congregation 00:21:04.07\00:21:07.29 of the children of Israel set out on their journey 00:21:07.32\00:21:10.11 from the Wilderness of Sin, according to the commandment 00:21:10.14\00:21:13.36 of the Lord, and camped in Rephidim; 00:21:13.39\00:21:16.77 but there was no water for the people to drink. 00:21:16.97\00:21:19.93 Therefore the people contended with Moses, and said, 00:21:20.22\00:21:23.60 'Give us water, that we may drink.' 00:21:23.63\00:21:25.71 So Moses said to them, 'Why do you contend with me? 00:21:25.91\00:21:28.86 Why do you tempt the Lord?' 00:21:28.89\00:21:30.52 And the people thirsted there for water, and the people 00:21:30.74\00:21:34.03 complained against Moses, and said, 'Why is it that you have 00:21:34.06\00:21:38.60 brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children 00:21:38.63\00:21:42.37 and our livestock with thirst?'" 00:21:42.47\00:21:45.07 Let me ask you, is grumbling and mumbling sin? 00:21:47.45\00:21:50.46 The Bible says, "Whatever is not of faith is sin," 00:21:51.82\00:21:55.79 in Romans 14 verse 23. 00:21:56.56\00:21:58.01 "Whatever is not of faith is sin." 00:21:58.04\00:22:00.66 Was Israel showing ungratefulness toward God? 00:22:00.97\00:22:04.18 I mean, read the previous chapter. 00:22:04.98\00:22:06.22 God had rained bread from the bakery of heaven. 00:22:06.25\00:22:08.96 Imagine how busy the angels were making this bread 00:22:10.07\00:22:14.03 to feed a million men, not counting women and children, 00:22:15.47\00:22:18.21 every day except one day of the week for 40 years. 00:22:18.86\00:22:23.25 Wow, that's amazing. 00:22:23.93\00:22:25.66 They had seen the Red Sea open, 00:22:26.05\00:22:27.35 they had seen the Egyptians swallowed, 00:22:27.38\00:22:29.34 they had seen the plagues falling upon Egypt. 00:22:29.37\00:22:31.54 They had seen all kinds of signs that God was with them 00:22:31.57\00:22:35.52 and that God was blessing them. 00:22:35.55\00:22:36.81 And now they're complaining because there's no water. 00:22:36.84\00:22:38.64 They deserved to fall under the judgment of God. 00:22:38.67\00:22:41.72 So in verse 4 we're told, "So Moses cried out to the Lord, 00:22:43.67\00:22:47.89 saying, 'What shall I do with this people? 00:22:47.92\00:22:50.94 They are almost ready to stone me.'" 00:22:50.97\00:22:53.54 And now God says something very interesting. 00:22:55.04\00:22:57.90 "And the Lord said to Moses, 'Go on before the people, 00:22:59.24\00:23:03.30 and take with you some of the elders of Israel. 00:23:04.08\00:23:07.07 Also take in your hand your rod with which you 00:23:07.68\00:23:11.06 struck the river...'" 00:23:11.09\00:23:12.48 That is the river Nile when it was turned into blood. 00:23:12.77\00:23:15.09 "...with which you struck the river, and go." 00:23:15.12\00:23:17.27 Verse 6, "Behold, I will stand before you there 00:23:18.54\00:23:23.79 on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, 00:23:23.82\00:23:28.87 and water will come out of it, that the people may drink." 00:23:29.41\00:23:33.50 Now, this is an interesting episode. 00:23:34.64\00:23:37.66 You have three symbols in this story. 00:23:38.20\00:23:40.22 You have a rock, you have a rod, and you have the water 00:23:40.82\00:23:45.17 that comes from the rock. 00:23:45.20\00:23:46.59 So how do you suppose we can find out what the rock means, 00:23:47.09\00:23:49.89 and what the rod means, and what the water represents? 00:23:50.09\00:23:53.49 Hello. 00:23:54.90\00:23:56.30 Sola scriptura. 00:23:56.71\00:23:59.06 Because if you only read this passage, you have 00:24:00.31\00:24:02.52 no interpretation to the symbols. 00:24:02.55\00:24:04.86 So where do you find other passages that allude to this 00:24:05.76\00:24:09.11 story that we find here? 00:24:09.20\00:24:10.70 A Bible concordance. 00:24:11.50\00:24:13.31 And where else? 00:24:13.47\00:24:14.85 The marginal references, that's right. 00:24:15.43\00:24:18.15 And so when we go to a concordance, we find 00:24:18.72\00:24:22.33 all sorts of text that help us understand what God 00:24:22.36\00:24:25.46 wanted to teach through this particular passage. 00:24:25.49\00:24:29.18 Now in this passage we have three symbols. 00:24:29.21\00:24:32.55 And we need to study each symbol within itself 00:24:32.97\00:24:37.50 and determine what that symbol means. 00:24:37.53\00:24:39.42 And then after we've done that individually, 00:24:39.45\00:24:42.09 we'll put them all together to get the picture. 00:24:42.12\00:24:44.82 So what you do is you interpret the symbols individually. 00:24:45.14\00:24:47.95 And then after you understand what each symbol means, 00:24:48.15\00:24:50.55 then you bring them together so that you see how they 00:24:50.58\00:24:53.07 relate to each other. 00:24:53.10\00:24:54.27 Now the first symbol that we want to take a look at 00:24:54.61\00:24:56.99 is the rock. 00:24:57.02\00:24:58.37 What does the rock represent? 00:24:58.79\00:25:01.09 Well, Deuteronomy 32 verse 4. 00:25:01.62\00:25:04.06 Nine times in this chapter it tells us that the rock 00:25:04.70\00:25:08.78 is the Lord. 00:25:09.11\00:25:10.44 Should Israel have understood even that in the Old Testament 00:25:10.77\00:25:13.70 that the rock was more than a literal rock? 00:25:13.73\00:25:15.95 They could understand that in the Old Testament. 00:25:16.39\00:25:18.48 Yes. 00:25:19.16\00:25:20.23 Could they have understood that the manna 00:25:20.33\00:25:22.33 was more than physical food? 00:25:22.36\00:25:23.98 Yes, because Moses told them in Deuteronomy 8. 00:25:24.35\00:25:27.58 He says that God gave them manna from heaven 00:25:27.61\00:25:30.42 that they might know that man does not live by bread alone, 00:25:30.45\00:25:33.25 but by ever word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. 00:25:33.28\00:25:35.60 They knew that the manna represented God's word. 00:25:35.63\00:25:37.46 Moses told them so. 00:25:37.49\00:25:38.64 And so they should have known that the rock was a symbol, 00:25:39.67\00:25:42.48 even in the Old Testament. 00:25:42.51\00:25:43.60 It says in Deuteronomy 32 verse 4, "He is the Rock..." 00:25:43.63\00:25:47.55 See, the rock is a person. 00:25:47.58\00:25:48.91 "...His work is perfect; for all His ways are justice, 00:25:49.54\00:25:53.00 a God of truth and without injustice; 00:25:53.03\00:25:55.09 righteous and upright is He." 00:25:55.12\00:25:56.80 And in this chapter 32, you know, 00:25:56.83\00:25:59.78 Moses is bragging a little bit. 00:26:00.60\00:26:01.76 He says, "The rock of the pagans is not like our Rock." 00:26:01.79\00:26:06.16 Because the pagans had their rock too. 00:26:07.27\00:26:09.34 But their gods were made out of stone. 00:26:09.75\00:26:12.95 Here, the stone represents the Lord. 00:26:12.98\00:26:15.52 Now, the rock then in the Old Testament represents the Lord. 00:26:16.67\00:26:21.57 But which particular Person are we dealing with here? 00:26:22.18\00:26:24.53 Because we have God the Father, we have the Son, 00:26:24.56\00:26:26.67 we have the Holy Spirit. 00:26:26.70\00:26:27.73 Which individual here are we dealing with? 00:26:27.90\00:26:31.40 1 Corinthians chapter 10 and verses 1 through 4 00:26:31.75\00:26:34.30 has the answer; 1 Corinthians 10:1-4. 00:26:34.33\00:26:36.91 "Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware 00:26:37.81\00:26:40.62 that all our fathers were under the cloud, 00:26:41.26\00:26:43.59 all passed through the sea, all were baptized into Moses 00:26:43.90\00:26:47.41 in the cloud and in the sea, all ate the same..." What? 00:26:47.44\00:26:51.42 "...spiritual food..." 00:26:52.24\00:26:53.91 Ah, it wasn't only physical food. 00:26:53.94\00:26:55.77 The same spiritual food. 00:26:56.24\00:26:57.95 "...and all drank the same spiritual drink." 00:26:58.22\00:27:01.69 So water represents something beyond the literal water, 00:27:01.72\00:27:05.12 beyond the literal H2O. 00:27:05.15\00:27:07.23 "For they drank from that spiritual Rock 00:27:07.74\00:27:11.45 that followed them, and that Rock was Christ." 00:27:11.48\00:27:15.50 So who is the Lord who is mentioned in Deuteronomy 32? 00:27:17.06\00:27:20.92 Jesus Christ. 00:27:21.76\00:27:22.96 Jesus Christ is the Rock. 00:27:24.09\00:27:25.70 Now you know what's interesting in this story, 00:27:26.12\00:27:28.33 in this story in Exodus 17? 00:27:28.78\00:27:30.38 Jesus tells Moses, because it's Jesus speaking, 00:27:31.35\00:27:34.55 He says, you know, "I'm going to go and I'm going to 00:27:34.58\00:27:36.87 stand on the rock." 00:27:36.90\00:27:38.04 So there you have the symbol and what the 00:27:38.07\00:27:40.54 symbol represents together. 00:27:40.57\00:27:43.82 The rock is the symbol, and Jesus is standing on the rock. 00:27:45.20\00:27:50.23 So you have the symbol and what the symbol 00:27:50.71\00:27:53.10 represents in the story. 00:27:53.13\00:27:54.84 And so now we have to interpret what the rod represents. 00:27:56.12\00:27:58.33 Is it clear what the rock represents? 00:27:58.36\00:28:00.43 Now we need to interpret what the rod represents. 00:28:00.84\00:28:03.31 What does the rod represent? 00:28:03.41\00:28:05.77 Well, the rod represents judgment. 00:28:06.36\00:28:09.09 Every time that Moses raised his rod, what happened? 00:28:10.04\00:28:13.43 A judgment fell upon the Egyptians. 00:28:13.93\00:28:17.33 But not only does the rod represent judgment, 00:28:17.90\00:28:20.63 but the act of smiting with the rod represents 00:28:20.66\00:28:24.36 that judgment is falling upon. 00:28:24.39\00:28:26.90 In other words, the act of the rod striking the rock 00:28:27.91\00:28:31.20 or falling upon the rock means that a judgment 00:28:31.23\00:28:34.15 is falling upon the rock. 00:28:34.18\00:28:36.12 I can imagine that when Moses was there before the people 00:28:36.15\00:28:39.83 and they were complaining and murmuring, 00:28:39.86\00:28:41.67 and now Moses raises his rod before the people, 00:28:41.70\00:28:45.01 the people were probably shaking in their sandals. 00:28:45.04\00:28:47.96 Whoo, they knew the power that was in that rod; 00:28:49.20\00:28:52.54 that rod of judgment. 00:28:53.38\00:28:54.91 But lo and behold, instead of the rod falling upon the 00:28:54.94\00:28:58.39 people who were guilty, the rod fell upon the Rock. 00:28:58.42\00:29:01.61 Interesting. 00:29:02.73\00:29:03.91 Now the word, "smite," that is used here, 00:29:05.02\00:29:07.94 "You will smite the rock," is the Hebrew word, "nakah." 00:29:07.97\00:29:11.43 And basically, this word is translated in different ways 00:29:12.66\00:29:16.69 in the Old Testament. 00:29:16.72\00:29:17.93 It's translated, to smite, to hit, to kill. 00:29:18.22\00:29:23.83 There are many, many different synonymous terms 00:29:23.86\00:29:25.99 that are used to describe this. 00:29:26.02\00:29:29.00 So the act of smiting with the rod symbolizes 00:29:29.94\00:29:33.49 the fact that the judgment is falling upon. 00:29:33.52\00:29:36.63 Now let's read Isaiah 53 verse 4, 00:29:37.66\00:29:40.18 this Messianic prophecy. 00:29:40.28\00:29:41.64 Interesting Messianic prophecy that uses the very same word, 00:29:41.67\00:29:44.75 "smite," but it applies it to the Messiah. 00:29:44.78\00:29:48.84 Notice Isaiah 53 and verse 4. 00:29:49.04\00:29:53.71 It says there, "Surely He has borne our griefs 00:29:54.45\00:29:59.42 and our sorrows; yet we esteemed Him nakah..." 00:29:59.52\00:30:05.00 We esteemed the Messiah, what? 00:30:07.71\00:30:10.11 Stricken. 00:30:11.96\00:30:13.18 Same identical word that is used for striking the rock. 00:30:13.21\00:30:16.41 It says, "...yet we esteemed Him stricken, 00:30:16.73\00:30:20.01 smitten by..." Whom? 00:30:20.60\00:30:22.63 "...smitten by God, and afflicted." 00:30:22.83\00:30:26.40 So the rod represents judgment. 00:30:27.06\00:30:29.45 And the falling of the rod represents execution 00:30:29.55\00:30:33.21 of judgment. 00:30:33.24\00:30:34.45 It means punishing. 00:30:35.09\00:30:36.79 Now what does the water represent? 00:30:38.26\00:30:40.03 We've interpreted two symbols so far. 00:30:40.23\00:30:42.25 The first symbol is the rock. 00:30:42.64\00:30:45.15 It represents whom? 00:30:45.18\00:30:46.49 Christ. 00:30:46.73\00:30:47.76 And then you have the rod, which represents judgment. 00:30:48.00\00:30:51.92 And the act of smiting represents the fact that the 00:30:51.95\00:30:54.71 judgment is falling upon. 00:30:54.74\00:30:56.26 Incidentally, when Moses smote with the rod the river Nile, 00:30:56.29\00:31:00.90 a plague fell, a judgment fell. 00:31:00.93\00:31:03.04 The Nile was turned into blood. 00:31:03.14\00:31:04.53 And when he smote the dust, lice came forth from the dust. 00:31:04.56\00:31:09.50 So the act of smiting means that a judgment 00:31:09.53\00:31:11.84 of God is falling upon. 00:31:11.87\00:31:13.77 Now what does the water represent in this episode? 00:31:13.80\00:31:17.17 Well when the rock was smitten, it gave its what? 00:31:18.18\00:31:21.33 It gave its water. 00:31:21.50\00:31:22.80 Now what does the water represent? 00:31:24.11\00:31:26.17 The water represents the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. 00:31:26.20\00:31:29.23 You say, "Well, where do you get that from?" 00:31:30.54\00:31:32.39 Let's go to John chapter 7 verses 37 to 39. 00:31:32.67\00:31:35.99 John chapter 7 verses 37 to 39. 00:31:36.19\00:31:39.00 You know, in this passage Jesus is at the Feast of Tabernacles. 00:31:40.32\00:31:43.73 And it's the last day of the Feast of Tabernacles. 00:31:44.21\00:31:46.52 It's the 8th day. 00:31:46.55\00:31:47.58 It's called the great day of the feast. 00:31:47.61\00:31:49.43 And Jesus is present in Jerusalem. 00:31:49.68\00:31:51.68 And He's going to make a revolutionary statement. 00:31:51.92\00:31:54.02 In verse 37 it says, "On the last day, 00:31:54.63\00:31:57.77 that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, 00:31:58.07\00:32:01.88 saying, 'If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.'" 00:32:01.91\00:32:08.30 So who is the Rock? Jesus. 00:32:09.66\00:32:12.53 He said, "I'm the Rock. Come to Me and drink." 00:32:12.56\00:32:15.24 Like people came to the rock to drink. 00:32:15.73\00:32:17.78 Jesus says, "Come to Me and drink." 00:32:18.05\00:32:20.08 And now comes something very important. 00:32:20.51\00:32:22.46 "He who believes in Me..." 00:32:22.99\00:32:24.86 The word, "believes," means to trust in Jesus. 00:32:25.38\00:32:27.59 It means to claim Jesus as Savior. 00:32:27.62\00:32:30.23 "He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, 00:32:31.40\00:32:35.57 out of his heart will flow rivers of living water." 00:32:35.90\00:32:40.32 Out of whose heart will flow rivers of living water? 00:32:40.42\00:32:43.30 Not out of Jesus, no. 00:32:44.03\00:32:45.67 Out of the person who believes. 00:32:46.07\00:32:48.09 Are you with me or not? 00:32:51.03\00:32:52.32 Jesus says, "Come to Me and drink. 00:32:53.84\00:32:55.31 And if you believe in Me, trust in Me..." 00:32:56.32\00:32:58.22 That's what it means to drink. 00:32:58.25\00:32:59.28 "If you trust in Me, then I will give you the water. 00:32:59.31\00:33:02.81 And the water will be in you. 00:33:02.84\00:33:04.72 And you will become a fountain of water." 00:33:05.43\00:33:07.49 That's what He's saying. 00:33:08.45\00:33:09.52 What was Jesus referring to? 00:33:11.26\00:33:12.84 Notice verse 39. 00:33:13.57\00:33:14.96 "But this He spoke concerning the Spirit..." 00:33:15.20\00:33:17.74 So what does the water represent? 00:33:18.46\00:33:20.03 The Spirit. 00:33:20.44\00:33:21.49 "But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom..." 00:33:22.07\00:33:25.37 Now listen carefully, "...whom those..." What? 00:33:25.40\00:33:27.36 "...believing in Him..." 00:33:27.75\00:33:29.88 That is, trusting in Him. 00:33:30.60\00:33:32.13 Repenting their sins, confessing their sins, 00:33:32.16\00:33:34.98 claiming Jesus as their Savior, and trusting in Him. 00:33:35.01\00:33:39.29 "But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, 00:33:40.40\00:33:42.27 whom those believing in Him would..." What? 00:33:42.30\00:33:44.84 "...would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, 00:33:45.42\00:33:48.73 because Jesus was not yet glorified." 00:33:48.76\00:33:50.75 When was Jesus glorified? 00:33:50.78\00:33:52.30 Actually, beyond the resurrection. 00:33:55.68\00:33:58.20 When He was installed at the right hand of God. 00:33:59.25\00:34:01.63 When He was invested as High Priest in heaven 00:34:01.66\00:34:05.05 when He went before His Father. 00:34:05.08\00:34:06.65 That's when Jesus was glorified. 00:34:07.63\00:34:09.44 Are you following me or not? 00:34:10.60\00:34:11.81 Now, how are we to understand this? 00:34:12.50\00:34:15.64 I'd like to illustrate it with the relationship between 00:34:16.44\00:34:18.45 the sun and the moon. 00:34:18.48\00:34:19.54 You know, you go out on a clear night in Fresno, 00:34:20.10\00:34:23.00 and you look into the sky and see this beautiful full moon. 00:34:24.60\00:34:27.70 You say, "Oh, how beautiful the moon is tonight." 00:34:29.94\00:34:32.34 Well, that's only partially true because the moon is ugly. 00:34:33.97\00:34:37.90 What makes the moon beautiful? 00:34:41.50\00:34:42.94 The sunlight shines on it. 00:34:43.88\00:34:45.56 And then you know what the moon does? 00:34:45.59\00:34:47.12 The sun shines on the moon, and then the moon 00:34:47.77\00:34:50.14 shines to the earth. 00:34:50.17\00:34:51.41 Jesus said, "I am the light of the world." 00:34:53.82\00:34:56.29 But He also said, "Ye are the light of the world." 00:34:57.05\00:34:59.88 Now how are we to understand that? 00:35:00.92\00:35:02.52 Jesus is the sun and we are moons. 00:35:02.55\00:35:05.30 And when Jesus shines on us, we shine to others. 00:35:06.64\00:35:10.71 What Jesus is saying is that when we drink the water, 00:35:11.67\00:35:14.71 we become fountains of water. 00:35:14.88\00:35:16.71 Because the water fills us. 00:35:17.18\00:35:19.11 Then we are able to share what God has given to us to others. 00:35:19.14\00:35:24.02 The greatest sign that you know Jesus is that you cannot 00:35:24.92\00:35:28.09 keep Jesus inside. 00:35:28.12\00:35:29.47 You want other people to have the experience that you've had. 00:35:29.50\00:35:32.74 If you don't feel that intense desire to tell people 00:35:34.17\00:35:36.44 about Jesus, perhaps it's because you don't know Jesus. 00:35:36.47\00:35:39.29 Because when you drink the water, you become 00:35:40.12\00:35:41.76 a fountain of water. 00:35:41.79\00:35:43.00 When you receive the light, you project the light 00:35:43.69\00:35:47.19 or you reflect the light to the earth. 00:35:47.22\00:35:49.25 So Jesus is saying that on the day of Pentecost, 00:35:49.81\00:35:52.45 the disciples would what? 00:35:52.55\00:35:54.31 The disciples would drink the water, because they 00:35:54.74\00:35:57.42 believed and trusted in Jesus. 00:35:57.45\00:35:59.33 And when they drank the water, 00:35:59.36\00:36:00.91 they would become fountains of water. 00:36:00.94\00:36:02.91 Let me ask you, what is the first thing that the disciples 00:36:02.94\00:36:05.60 did after they received the Holy Spirit? 00:36:05.63\00:36:07.62 Preached. 00:36:09.02\00:36:10.44 Preach about whom? 00:36:11.35\00:36:12.52 About Jesus. 00:36:13.09\00:36:14.53 You see, they drank the water. 00:36:15.00\00:36:16.93 And because they drank the water, now what? 00:36:16.96\00:36:19.95 Now they shared the water that they had received. 00:36:20.15\00:36:24.71 Now there's a second episode concerning the rock 00:36:26.36\00:36:31.17 in the Old Testament. 00:36:31.20\00:36:32.38 Before that, let me just read 1 Corinthians 12 verse 13 00:36:32.41\00:36:35.47 where it clearly says that the water 00:36:36.04\00:36:37.58 represents the Holy Spirit. 00:36:37.61\00:36:38.64 It says, "For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body; 00:36:38.67\00:36:42.33 whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, 00:36:42.71\00:36:45.07 and all have been made to drink into one Spirit." 00:36:45.10\00:36:48.77 So what does the water represent? 00:36:48.80\00:36:50.20 The Holy Spirit. 00:36:50.23\00:36:51.26 And when you receive the Holy Spirit, 00:36:51.29\00:36:53.40 then you are what? 00:36:53.81\00:36:56.36 Then you become a fountain to share what God has given you. 00:36:56.79\00:37:00.70 Now there's a second episode, rock episode. 00:37:00.73\00:37:03.21 It's found in Numbers 20 verses 7 through 11. 00:37:03.24\00:37:05.72 You have it there in your material. 00:37:05.75\00:37:07.22 Let's read that passage. 00:37:07.30\00:37:08.75 "Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 'Take the rod; 00:37:09.15\00:37:12.34 you and your brother Aaron 00:37:14.17\00:37:15.29 gather the congregation together.'" 00:37:15.32\00:37:17.02 But now there's a difference. 00:37:17.22\00:37:19.11 God says what? 00:37:20.25\00:37:21.50 "Speak to the rock..." 00:37:22.18\00:37:23.73 In other words, "Say to the rock, 'Give me your water.'" 00:37:23.76\00:37:25.75 "Speak to the rock before their eyes, 00:37:26.40\00:37:28.04 and it will yield its water." 00:37:28.15\00:37:30.58 So the first time, God says strike the rock. 00:37:32.21\00:37:34.74 And the second time, God says speak to the rock 00:37:35.48\00:37:37.65 and ask the rock for its water. 00:37:37.68\00:37:39.65 Why the difference? 00:37:39.88\00:37:41.59 Well you know what Moses did. 00:37:41.62\00:37:43.40 He was pretty mad. 00:37:44.88\00:37:46.21 And you know what? 00:37:46.81\00:37:47.89 Moses spent 40 years with the children of Israel 00:37:49.12\00:37:52.27 in the wilderness. 00:37:52.30\00:37:53.39 A congregation of a million, not counting women and children. 00:37:54.19\00:37:57.67 Senior pastor. 00:37:59.09\00:38:00.44 And in those 40 years, he never lost it till the very end. 00:38:03.30\00:38:06.15 In fact, Ellen White says in, Patriarch And Prophets, 00:38:07.64\00:38:09.44 that if Moses had not committed that one sin, 00:38:09.47\00:38:12.51 he would have been translated to heaven from among the living. 00:38:13.39\00:38:15.89 He would not have died she says in, Patriarch And Prophets. 00:38:17.21\00:38:19.94 The impression is that during those 40 years, 00:38:20.95\00:38:22.84 of course, he had 40 years of preparation in the wilderness. 00:38:22.87\00:38:25.35 See. 00:38:26.28\00:38:27.37 He had his Pentecost experience. 00:38:27.86\00:38:29.79 And that's why he was so patient. 00:38:30.41\00:38:31.83 But he lost it. 00:38:31.86\00:38:32.90 And instead of speaking to the rock, what did he do? 00:38:33.28\00:38:37.05 He took the rod and he struck the rock twice. 00:38:37.69\00:38:41.09 And as a result, God said, "You will not enter 00:38:41.26\00:38:43.20 the Promised Land." 00:38:43.23\00:38:44.26 That was terrible for Moses. 00:38:44.29\00:38:46.91 Imagine, 40 years longing to reach the destiny that God 00:38:47.77\00:38:52.27 had said they were going to have, and now God says 00:38:52.30\00:38:54.55 you're not going to enter. 00:38:54.58\00:38:55.64 Wow. 00:38:55.67\00:38:56.70 What was so serious about what Moses did? 00:38:58.07\00:39:00.19 It was not simple disobedience. 00:39:00.22\00:39:01.98 Notice, Patriarchs And Prophets, page 418. 00:39:02.01\00:39:04.32 "By his rash act Moses took away the force of the lesson 00:39:05.52\00:39:10.60 that God purposed to teach. 00:39:10.63\00:39:12.06 The rock, being a symbol of Christ, had been once smitten, 00:39:13.14\00:39:17.37 as Christ was to be once offered. 00:39:17.80\00:39:20.14 The second time it was needful only to speak to the rock, 00:39:20.83\00:39:24.73 as we have only to ask for blessings in the name of Jesus. 00:39:25.12\00:39:29.58 By the second smiting of the rock the significance of this 00:39:30.13\00:39:33.99 beautiful figure of Christ was destroyed." 00:39:34.02\00:39:37.74 Moses destroyed the beautiful symbolism 00:39:38.41\00:39:40.92 that God wanted to teach. 00:39:40.95\00:39:42.44 That was the seriousness of his sin. 00:39:42.89\00:39:46.55 By the way, if we want the Holy Spirit today, 00:39:47.34\00:39:50.09 Jesus doesn't have to suffer under the judgment 00:39:50.34\00:39:52.55 of God any more. 00:39:52.58\00:39:53.62 That happened once for all. 00:39:54.14\00:39:55.73 If we want the blessings, all we have to do is ask. 00:39:57.06\00:39:59.81 Notice Luke 11 verse 13. 00:40:00.39\00:40:02.72 Luke 11 and verse 13. 00:40:02.75\00:40:04.51 It says, "If you then..." 00:40:04.54\00:40:06.12 Here Jesus is speaking. 00:40:06.15\00:40:07.34 "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts 00:40:07.37\00:40:11.35 to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father 00:40:11.38\00:40:15.99 give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him." 00:40:16.02\00:40:19.32 And yet there's a church in the world, 00:40:21.17\00:40:23.03 the Roman Catholic Church... 00:40:24.44\00:40:26.11 I know that some of you use to be Roman Catholics. 00:40:26.49\00:40:30.16 That church teaches that every time the mass is celebrated, 00:40:31.72\00:40:35.28 Christ is sacrificed again. 00:40:35.31\00:40:38.28 If God excluded Moses from the Promised Land 00:40:39.73\00:40:42.97 for ruining the symbol and giving the impression 00:40:43.67\00:40:46.54 that Christ would have to suffer under the judgment of God 00:40:46.57\00:40:49.17 more than once, how does God feel about a teaching 00:40:49.20\00:40:52.75 of a church that says that Jesus is sacrificed 00:40:52.78\00:40:55.51 over and over and over again in thousands of places 00:40:55.54\00:41:01.08 all over planet earth? 00:41:01.11\00:41:02.56 It's an insult to the Lord. 00:41:04.13\00:41:06.35 Because the book of Hebrews tells us that when Jesus 00:41:06.69\00:41:09.58 died, He died once for all. 00:41:09.61\00:41:12.50 He needs not die any more. 00:41:13.00\00:41:14.77 He does not need to suffer under the judgment of God. 00:41:14.80\00:41:17.60 He already suffered the judgment once and for all 00:41:17.63\00:41:20.53 for sin and for sinners. 00:41:20.56\00:41:22.60 Now, what does Pentecost have to do with this? 00:41:24.96\00:41:27.29 Well let's take a look at the middle of this page 00:41:28.60\00:41:30.73 that you have in your handout. 00:41:30.76\00:41:33.11 What did Jesus accomplish by His ministry on earth? 00:41:33.46\00:41:36.46 That's what we need to know first. 00:41:36.74\00:41:38.45 First of all, Jesus lived His perfect life in the camp, right? 00:41:39.34\00:41:42.37 And He lived it for all of us, because we can't 00:41:43.59\00:41:45.42 offer the law perfection. 00:41:45.45\00:41:46.80 Jesus came and lived the life that the law requires, 00:41:46.83\00:41:49.67 and He lived it in our place. 00:41:49.70\00:41:51.17 What else did He accomplish? 00:41:51.97\00:41:53.43 He offered His life and sacrifice upon the altar. 00:41:53.91\00:41:56.47 He bore our sins, the sins of the whole world, upon Himself 00:41:56.50\00:41:59.52 so that we wouldn't have to die. 00:41:59.81\00:42:00.89 He died so that we don't have to die. 00:42:00.92\00:42:02.50 He lived to offer the law the life 00:42:02.53\00:42:05.51 that we cannot offer the law. 00:42:05.54\00:42:07.18 And then Jesus resurrected from the dead at the laver. 00:42:08.14\00:42:11.51 So He's following the Sanctuary. 00:42:11.84\00:42:13.05 The camp, the altar of sacrifice, the laver. 00:42:13.08\00:42:17.02 Where would we expect Him to go after His resurrection, 00:42:17.05\00:42:20.31 which is represented by the laver? 00:42:20.34\00:42:21.92 The next thing that we would expect would be 00:42:22.57\00:42:25.79 His entering the Holy Place. 00:42:27.08\00:42:29.14 Right? 00:42:29.30\00:42:30.33 We would expect, after His sacrifice, the fire to 00:42:30.73\00:42:34.29 show approval of the sacrifice that He had offered. 00:42:34.32\00:42:38.70 Are you understanding me or not? 00:42:39.40\00:42:40.87 Now the question is, where is that fire manifested 00:42:41.24\00:42:45.05 showing that God accepted the sacrifice of Jesus Christ? 00:42:45.08\00:42:48.63 Well, we need to study the temple geography. 00:42:48.74\00:42:51.39 You see, in the Hebrew Sanctuary, after the 00:42:53.06\00:42:54.95 altar of sacrifice you have the laver. 00:42:54.98\00:42:57.25 And after the laver, you have the ministration of the 00:42:57.82\00:43:00.10 High Priest in the Holy Place. 00:43:00.13\00:43:02.04 After Jesus died and resurrected on earth, we would expect Him 00:43:02.50\00:43:06.62 to go where? 00:43:06.65\00:43:07.72 To begin His ministry in the Holy Place 00:43:08.16\00:43:10.48 of the heavenly Sanctuary. 00:43:10.51\00:43:11.54 But you know what most Christians say? 00:43:11.57\00:43:13.15 Including some Adventists who have left the faith, 00:43:13.18\00:43:16.22 like Desmond Ford. 00:43:16.25\00:43:17.28 They say, "No, Jesus went directly into 00:43:17.31\00:43:20.06 the Most Holy Place." 00:43:20.09\00:43:21.96 That's senseless. 00:43:22.27\00:43:23.49 What about the Holy Place? 00:43:24.14\00:43:25.61 If Jesus lived His perfect life in the camp, 00:43:26.53\00:43:28.89 if He died at the altar, if He resurrected at the laver, 00:43:29.34\00:43:32.48 we would expect Jesus next to go into the Holy Place. 00:43:32.88\00:43:36.27 And then later to go into the Most Holy Place. 00:43:36.87\00:43:39.99 So it's foolishness to say that He jumped from the court 00:43:40.52\00:43:42.85 into the Most Holy Place. 00:43:42.88\00:43:44.33 Because there is a Holy Place ministry of Jesus Christ. 00:43:44.54\00:43:47.55 Now the question is, where did Jesus enter? 00:43:48.95\00:43:51.28 Well, let's read Revelation chapter 4 and verse 5. 00:43:52.41\00:43:54.70 Revelation chapter 4 and verse 5. 00:43:54.73\00:43:57.83 This is an interesting detail. 00:43:59.01\00:44:00.65 It's describing the heavenly throne room 00:44:01.87\00:44:04.20 before Jesus arrives. 00:44:04.23\00:44:05.26 Jesus arrives in chapter 5. 00:44:05.29\00:44:06.96 Chapter 4, the throne room is being prepared 00:44:06.99\00:44:09.24 for the arrival of Christ. 00:44:09.27\00:44:10.70 It says there, "And from the throne proceeded lightnings, 00:44:11.24\00:44:14.69 thunderings, and voices. 00:44:14.72\00:44:16.03 Seven lamps of fire were burning before the throne, 00:44:16.06\00:44:18.88 which are the seven Spirits of God." 00:44:18.91\00:44:20.59 Now, where is this event taking place in Revelation 4? 00:44:20.62\00:44:23.90 In the Holy Place. How do we know that? 00:44:24.37\00:44:26.21 Because there's seven lamps of fire. 00:44:26.50\00:44:28.07 And the seven lamps of fire were in the Holy Place, right? 00:44:28.10\00:44:31.17 And by the way, the seven lamps of fire represent what? 00:44:32.16\00:44:34.86 The Holy Spirit. 00:44:35.76\00:44:36.79 Are there seven Holy Spirits? 00:44:36.94\00:44:38.48 No. 00:44:38.70\00:44:39.73 The number seven represents, there present, is the 00:44:39.99\00:44:42.91 fullness of the Holy Spirit. 00:44:42.94\00:44:44.23 The totality of the Holy Spirit is present there 00:44:44.85\00:44:47.00 in the throne room. 00:44:47.03\00:44:48.06 And then in chapter 5 Jesus arrives. 00:44:48.09\00:44:51.16 See, in chapter 4 the throne room is prepared. 00:44:52.09\00:44:54.47 Those who have watched the series on, The 24 Elders, 00:44:54.50\00:44:57.76 I have a whole presentation called, 00:44:57.96\00:45:00.14 The Return of the War Hero. 00:45:00.17\00:45:01.61 Chapter 4; the preparation of the throne room, 00:45:02.16\00:45:04.22 the cherubim and seraphim are there, the representatives 00:45:04.25\00:45:06.55 of the worlds are there, you know, the Holy Spirit 00:45:06.58\00:45:10.55 is present there, the Father is sitting on the throne. 00:45:10.58\00:45:12.77 And everything is in expectancy, because in chapter 5 00:45:12.87\00:45:15.38 Jesus is returning from the earth victorious 00:45:15.41\00:45:17.81 in His battle with the devil. 00:45:18.29\00:45:19.71 And He arrives in chapter 5 and verse 6. 00:45:20.14\00:45:22.98 And how does He arrive? 00:45:23.18\00:45:25.12 How does He present Himself before His Father? 00:45:25.32\00:45:27.92 Notice verse 6. 00:45:27.95\00:45:29.30 "And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of 00:45:29.33\00:45:33.02 the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, 00:45:33.05\00:45:35.68 stood a Lamb as though it had been slain..." 00:45:35.71\00:45:39.31 How is Jesus presenting Himself? 00:45:39.80\00:45:41.80 Is He alive when He presents Himself? 00:45:42.68\00:45:44.85 Yes, He died but now He's coming alive. 00:45:45.05\00:45:47.95 And He's presenting Himself as the Lamb 00:45:48.62\00:45:51.01 as though it had been slain before the throne 00:45:51.04\00:45:53.32 where the Father is sitting. 00:45:53.35\00:45:54.74 And it says, and now notice the nuance here, 00:45:55.65\00:45:57.99 "...having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the 00:45:58.02\00:46:00.64 seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth." 00:46:00.67\00:46:05.08 In chapter 4, the seven Spirits are there. 00:46:06.75\00:46:09.63 But in chapter 5, the seven Spirits are what? 00:46:10.44\00:46:13.15 Sent to the earth. 00:46:13.49\00:46:14.71 What event is that? 00:46:14.74\00:46:15.88 That event is the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit 00:46:16.59\00:46:19.28 is sent to the earth. 00:46:19.31\00:46:20.49 So in other words, Jesus ascends to the throne room, 00:46:21.26\00:46:23.83 He presents Himself before His Father, 00:46:23.86\00:46:25.93 and then the next step is that the Holy Spirit is poured out. 00:46:26.34\00:46:33.67 The Spirit is sent to the earth. 00:46:33.70\00:46:35.93 And Ellen White describes it beautifully in the 00:46:35.96\00:46:38.15 last three pages of, Desire Of Ages. 00:46:38.18\00:46:40.26 Wow. 00:46:40.29\00:46:41.32 If you can read that without goose bumps, 00:46:41.35\00:46:43.85 I don't know how you can do that. 00:46:45.87\00:46:47.27 Because it is really exciting. 00:46:47.30\00:46:49.33 And it's even going to be more exciting when Jesus 00:46:49.43\00:46:52.69 comes to take all of His people home. 00:46:52.72\00:46:54.26 Whoo, the heavenly throne room is going to be prepared. 00:46:54.97\00:46:57.21 By the way, the Father doesn't come at the second coming. 00:46:57.24\00:46:59.70 He sends forth Jesus. 00:46:59.73\00:47:01.29 Now there's this idea that Jesus is coming with the Father. 00:47:02.48\00:47:05.04 No, no, the Father sits on His throne in heaven. 00:47:05.07\00:47:07.11 And the throne room will be prepared in heaven. 00:47:08.05\00:47:10.66 And then Jesus with His angels will come here, 00:47:11.67\00:47:14.59 and Jesus and His angels will call forth the dead. 00:47:14.62\00:47:17.60 And then we'll take the journey to heaven. 00:47:17.63\00:47:19.55 And then the heavenly throne room will be prepared 00:47:19.58\00:47:22.14 to receive the redeemed from all ages. 00:47:22.17\00:47:25.12 And so Ellen White describes it in a magnificent way. 00:47:25.98\00:47:29.50 She says that Jesus entered through the gates into the city, 00:47:29.53\00:47:33.20 and the angels were singing and they were praising. 00:47:33.23\00:47:35.65 I mean, thunderous praise. 00:47:35.68\00:47:37.67 And then Jesus raises His hands and He says, 00:47:38.03\00:47:40.22 "Shhh, silence." 00:47:41.02\00:47:43.42 She says, suddenly all the angels obey 00:47:43.94\00:47:45.75 and there's absolute silence. 00:47:45.78\00:47:47.46 And then Ellen White describes how Jesus enters the 00:47:48.30\00:47:50.52 presence of His Father. 00:47:50.55\00:47:51.77 He shows His Father the wounds on His hands, 00:47:52.44\00:47:54.52 on His brow, His side, His feet. 00:47:55.23\00:47:59.04 And He says, "Father, I need to know if My sacrifice 00:47:59.63\00:48:04.30 was sufficient to bring all of My people home. 00:48:04.33\00:48:06.72 I need to know." 00:48:07.94\00:48:08.97 And the Father says, "It is enough." 00:48:10.11\00:48:13.40 And then the Father embraces His Son. 00:48:15.06\00:48:18.00 And then the Father says, "Let all the angels 00:48:19.75\00:48:23.04 of God worship Him." 00:48:23.07\00:48:24.85 And then the angelic hosts sing even at a higher note 00:48:25.44\00:48:29.04 hymns of praises to the Lamb that was slain. 00:48:29.41\00:48:33.16 And then the Holy Spirit is poured out, 00:48:33.54\00:48:36.02 and the tongues of fire are seen on earth. 00:48:36.05\00:48:38.57 The tongues on earth of fire were a signal that the 00:48:38.60\00:48:42.58 sacrifice of Jesus had been accepted in heaven. 00:48:42.61\00:48:45.43 Sacrifice and fire. 00:48:45.46\00:48:47.10 The same symbolism. 00:48:47.92\00:48:49.41 God was showing that the striking of the rock 00:48:49.61\00:48:52.83 was accepted, because now the water was coming 00:48:52.86\00:48:56.22 forth from the rock. 00:48:56.25\00:48:57.46 Isn't that magnificent symbolism? 00:48:58.53\00:49:00.49 I mean, how can you understand all of these episodes 00:49:01.52\00:49:04.80 in the Old Testament without reference to Jesus Christ? 00:49:04.83\00:49:08.25 In, Story Of Redemption, page 386, which 00:49:08.82\00:49:11.01 you have in your material, Ellen White explains, 00:49:11.04\00:49:14.23 "The rending of the veil of the temple showed that the 00:49:14.26\00:49:16.52 Jewish sacrifices and ordinances would no longer be received." 00:49:16.55\00:49:20.44 Now listen carefully. 00:49:21.55\00:49:22.77 "The great Sacrifice had been offered and had been accepted, 00:49:23.15\00:49:29.39 and the Holy Spirit which descended on the day of 00:49:30.21\00:49:32.98 Pentecost carried the minds of the disciples from the 00:49:33.01\00:49:35.63 earthly sanctuary to the heavenly..." 00:49:35.66\00:49:37.67 Now listen, "...where Jesus had entered by His own blood, 00:49:37.77\00:49:42.46 to shed upon His disciples..." 00:49:42.70\00:49:44.99 Not the whole world, folks. 00:49:45.02\00:49:46.60 "...to shed upon His disciples the benefits of His atonement." 00:49:47.73\00:49:53.16 Now what are the benefits of Christ's atonement? 00:49:53.19\00:49:55.16 The benefits are His perfect life and His death for sin. 00:49:56.57\00:49:59.53 Those are the benefits of His earthly work. 00:50:00.29\00:50:02.28 And those benefits are available to how many? 00:50:02.69\00:50:05.01 They're available to everyone. 00:50:05.75\00:50:07.24 In other words, when Jesus lived His life and died His death, 00:50:08.62\00:50:11.36 Jesus bought the gift of salvation. 00:50:11.74\00:50:14.96 He paid for the gift of salvation. 00:50:15.26\00:50:17.15 Let me ask you, how much does a gift cost you? 00:50:18.97\00:50:21.48 It costs to the giver. 00:50:22.96\00:50:25.20 But it's free to the receiver. 00:50:26.14\00:50:27.95 Now let me ask you, is it possible to refuse a gift 00:50:29.33\00:50:32.67 that somebody gives you? 00:50:32.70\00:50:33.91 Of course. 00:50:34.75\00:50:35.78 Is it possible to refuse the gift that Jesus bought? 00:50:36.04\00:50:39.22 Oh, you better believe it. 00:50:40.14\00:50:41.66 You see, it's in the Holy Place that we receive the gift 00:50:42.23\00:50:44.91 when we claim Jesus as our Intercessor, 00:50:45.92\00:50:48.40 when we claim Him as our Mediator. 00:50:49.30\00:50:51.30 If we sin, we have an Advocate with the Father; 00:50:52.41\00:50:55.06 Jesus Christ the Righteous. 00:50:55.09\00:50:56.49 And so it's in the service in the Holy Place 00:50:57.22\00:51:00.12 where we benefit from what He did on earth. 00:51:00.22\00:51:02.61 You see, when I come to Jesus repentant, 00:51:03.28\00:51:05.49 sorry for sin, I say, "Lord, I blew it. 00:51:05.69\00:51:07.81 I'm sorry. I repent. 00:51:07.84\00:51:09.75 I confess my sin. 00:51:09.78\00:51:10.94 I'm a miserable sinner. I deserve death. 00:51:10.97\00:51:12.84 But Jesus, I believe that You lived the life 00:51:12.87\00:51:15.66 that I should live, You died the death that I should die. 00:51:15.69\00:51:18.08 I receive You as my Savior and as my Lord." 00:51:18.11\00:51:20.95 Jesus says, "I take My life and My death, 00:51:20.98\00:51:23.55 and I place them to your account. 00:51:23.58\00:51:25.16 And I look upon you as if you had never sinned." 00:51:25.33\00:51:27.53 You benefit from what He did, personally and individually. 00:51:29.39\00:51:32.86 Are you following me? 00:51:32.90\00:51:33.93 For most Christians, you know, everything 00:51:34.85\00:51:36.55 took place at the cross. 00:51:36.58\00:51:37.63 Jesus has an important work to perform in the Holy Place 00:51:37.73\00:51:41.57 of the Sanctuary. 00:51:41.77\00:51:43.14 Now what happened after the day of Pentecost? 00:51:44.07\00:51:46.11 Well the disciples drank the water, and what did they do? 00:51:46.78\00:51:49.88 Whoo, they drank the water, 00:51:52.51\00:51:53.88 and immediately after drinking the water... 00:51:53.91\00:51:55.36 Which means that they received the Holy Spirit. 00:51:55.39\00:51:56.84 Because they had repented and they had confessed their sins 00:51:56.87\00:51:59.48 the ten days before, and so on. 00:51:59.51\00:52:01.23 They prepared to receive the Holy Spirit. 00:52:01.26\00:52:03.38 So now they received the Holy Spirit. 00:52:03.48\00:52:05.07 And what do they do immediately? 00:52:05.27\00:52:06.88 They go out and witness. 00:52:08.26\00:52:09.54 Notice Acts chapter 1. 00:52:10.24\00:52:11.51 This is on the last page of your material. 00:52:11.54\00:52:13.17 Acts chapter 1 verses 7 and 8. Acts chapter 1 verses 7 and 8. 00:52:13.20\00:52:17.31 I want you to notice that the expression, "you shall," 00:52:19.36\00:52:21.63 is used twice here. 00:52:21.73\00:52:23.04 "And He said to them, 'It is not for you to know times or 00:52:24.31\00:52:28.72 seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. 00:52:28.75\00:52:31.91 But you shall receive...'" 00:52:31.94\00:52:33.77 There, "you shall." Notice. 00:52:33.87\00:52:35.03 "...you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit 00:52:35.06\00:52:38.65 has come upon you." 00:52:38.68\00:52:39.72 What did Jesus say? "You shall receive..." What? 00:52:40.58\00:52:42.75 Power. What for? 00:52:43.04\00:52:44.51 You know, today you listen to charismatics 00:52:46.06\00:52:48.13 and they say, "Oh, the reason for the power is for you 00:52:48.16\00:52:50.10 to have a good time in church, to roll in the aisles, 00:52:50.13\00:52:53.04 to laugh in the spirit, and to feel good." 00:52:53.07\00:52:55.16 You know, it's for your own personal benefit. 00:52:56.57\00:52:58.47 So you can speak in tongues that not even God can understand. 00:52:58.50\00:53:01.65 It's all about me, me, me. 00:53:04.63\00:53:06.13 But the purpose of the Holy Spirit, of receiving the power, 00:53:07.81\00:53:10.91 is witness. 00:53:11.12\00:53:12.44 Because it says, "You shall receive power when the 00:53:13.13\00:53:15.07 Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses..." 00:53:15.10\00:53:18.90 "Receive and give," is what Jesus is saying. 00:53:19.51\00:53:22.68 "...you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, 00:53:22.71\00:53:25.70 and in all Judea and Samaria, and unto the end of the earth." 00:53:25.73\00:53:30.06 One final illustration. 00:53:30.86\00:53:32.36 The Samaritan woman illustrates perfectly 00:53:32.39\00:53:34.87 what we've been talking about. 00:53:34.90\00:53:36.19 Jesus goes to Jacob's well. 00:53:37.25\00:53:40.86 Sitting there, and a woman comes to draw water at noon. 00:53:41.82\00:53:44.96 Which is very unusual because water isn't drawn at noon. 00:53:44.99\00:53:48.11 It's terribly hot in the Holy Land. 00:53:48.14\00:53:49.81 But this woman had a life that she lived, 00:53:49.84\00:53:53.35 which was morally corrupt. 00:53:53.38\00:53:55.43 And so she didn't want anybody to see her. 00:53:55.46\00:53:57.33 So Jesus says, "Give Me water to drink." 00:53:57.36\00:53:59.14 And she says, "How is it that You, a Jew, 00:54:00.01\00:54:01.67 would speak to a Samaritan?" 00:54:01.70\00:54:03.04 See, this woman progresses in her understanding of Jesus. 00:54:03.92\00:54:06.81 First of all, Jesus is a Jew. 00:54:06.84\00:54:08.28 Then when Jesus reveals her life to her, she says, 00:54:08.31\00:54:10.90 "I think you're a prophet." 00:54:10.93\00:54:11.99 By the end of the conversation, she says, 00:54:12.02\00:54:13.69 "I believe You're the Messiah." 00:54:13.72\00:54:15.23 And so this woman, you know, Jesus says 00:54:17.63\00:54:20.15 something very interesting to her in John 4 verses 13 and 14. 00:54:20.18\00:54:23.45 Notice John 4:13-14. 00:54:23.48\00:54:25.37 "Jesus answered and said to her, 00:54:25.86\00:54:27.47 'Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again...'" 00:54:27.82\00:54:30.78 You drink from this water from Jacob's well, 00:54:30.81\00:54:32.32 you will thirst again. 00:54:32.67\00:54:34.05 "...but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him..." 00:54:34.55\00:54:37.75 It's speaking about Pentecost. 00:54:38.14\00:54:39.56 Listen carefully. 00:54:40.88\00:54:41.91 "...that I shall give him will never thirst. 00:54:41.94\00:54:43.84 But the water that I shall give him will become in him 00:54:43.87\00:54:47.46 a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life." 00:54:47.49\00:54:51.07 Are you catching the picture? 00:54:51.46\00:54:52.63 "You come and drink from the fountain, 00:54:52.66\00:54:55.20 and then you become a fountain," 00:54:55.23\00:54:56.83 is what Jesus is saying. 00:54:57.85\00:54:59.22 And this woman lived this experience. 00:54:59.25\00:55:02.32 When she accepted Jesus as Messiah, she goes back to 00:55:03.03\00:55:05.25 Sychar, the city that she lived in. 00:55:05.28\00:55:07.24 She not embarrassed now. 00:55:08.02\00:55:09.34 She goes from house to house, she says, 00:55:10.67\00:55:12.09 "I found the Messiah that we've been waiting for. 00:55:12.12\00:55:15.15 Really!" 00:55:15.40\00:55:16.43 And you know she had an excitement in her voice 00:55:16.46\00:55:19.31 that led people to say, "Wow, we've got to hear." 00:55:19.34\00:55:21.59 "Yeah, I can show you where He's at." 00:55:21.62\00:55:23.74 And so now she comes with the whole city of Sychar. 00:55:24.59\00:55:27.37 She drank the water, and now she's giving the water. 00:55:27.40\00:55:29.82 And then, you know, the disciples come back to Jesus, 00:55:30.18\00:55:32.67 and they say, "Lord, we brought You the food 00:55:32.95\00:55:34.47 that You told us to go get." 00:55:34.50\00:55:35.67 And you know, Jesus said, "My food and My drink 00:55:35.81\00:55:38.64 is to do My Father's will and to finish His work." 00:55:38.67\00:55:40.57 And the disciples, you know, spiritually blind, they say, 00:55:40.60\00:55:45.37 "Well maybe somebody brought Him some food 00:55:45.40\00:55:46.80 while we were gone." 00:55:46.83\00:55:47.97 And then Jesus says, "Haven't you heard that there's 00:55:50.75\00:55:53.45 four months until the harvest?" 00:55:53.48\00:55:54.66 He says, "No, no, there's not four months until the harvest." 00:55:54.69\00:55:56.96 He says, "Look, at the fields. 00:55:56.99\00:55:58.46 They're already white waiting for the harvest." 00:55:58.49\00:56:01.02 And you read, Desire Of Ages, Ellen Whites says that 00:56:01.05\00:56:03.22 Jesus was not pointing at fields of barley or fields of wheat. 00:56:03.25\00:56:07.17 Jesus was pointing at this woman who was coming 00:56:07.76\00:56:10.66 with the entire city of Sychar to hear the words of Jesus. 00:56:10.69\00:56:16.08 She drank the water from the fountain. 00:56:17.60\00:56:19.80 And now she became a fountain of water to others. 00:56:20.61\00:56:24.66 The greatest sign, brothers and sisters, 00:56:25.07\00:56:27.51 that we know Jesus is an intense desire 00:56:28.30\00:56:32.30 to let others know about Jesus. 00:56:32.33\00:56:35.09 If we are not letting other people know about Jesus, 00:56:35.73\00:56:37.85 if we don't feel that desire, if we're simply warming the pew, 00:56:37.88\00:56:41.38 perhaps it's because we haven't known the Lord. 00:56:41.63\00:56:43.90 I finish by reading this statement from Ellen White, 00:56:43.93\00:56:45.94 Ministry of Healing, 102. 00:56:45.97\00:56:47.46 "She proved herself a more effective missionary 00:56:48.20\00:56:50.42 than His own disciples. 00:56:50.45\00:56:51.75 The disciples saw nothing in Samaria to indicate 00:56:52.59\00:56:54.82 that it was an encouraging field. 00:56:54.85\00:56:56.47 Their thoughts were fixed upon a great 00:56:57.12\00:56:58.85 work to be done in the future." 00:56:58.88\00:56:59.96 Like many Adventist, they say, "We're not doing much now, 00:56:59.99\00:57:02.25 but when the latter rain comes..." 00:57:02.28\00:57:04.07 "They did not see that right around them 00:57:05.40\00:57:08.40 was a harvest to be gathered. 00:57:08.43\00:57:09.91 But through the woman whom they despised, a whole city full 00:57:10.01\00:57:13.72 were brought to hear Jesus. 00:57:13.75\00:57:15.34 She carried the light at once to her countrymen. 00:57:15.37\00:57:18.93 This woman represents the working of a 00:57:18.96\00:57:21.29 practical faith in Christ." 00:57:21.32\00:57:23.92 So is this story of the rock a very significant story? 00:57:25.28\00:57:28.97 Is it centered in Jesus Christ? 00:57:29.46\00:57:31.99 It most certainly is. 00:57:32.15\00:57:33.18 If you don't see Christ, you will make no sense out of it. 00:57:33.21\00:57:36.85 It will be meaningless. 00:57:37.17\00:57:38.72 But with Christ, it becomes a living passage to teach us 00:57:38.75\00:57:42.93 important lessons in our spiritual walk with the Lord. 00:57:42.96\00:57:46.62
