Well hello, everybody.
00:00:15.34\00:00:16.77
Welcome to our sixth session,
or the seventh session actually,
00:00:17.50\00:00:22.12
of Anchor Bible school.
00:00:22.53\00:00:23.97
We're glad you're here.
00:00:24.00\00:00:25.32
This morning we want to
tie down the last principle
00:00:25.85\00:00:29.00
that we were studying
yesterday on futurism.
00:00:29.03\00:00:32.74
And then we want to
enter into our next principle,
00:00:32.77\00:00:36.30
which is that all
true Bible prophecy
00:00:36.33\00:00:39.49
is centered in Jesus Christ.
00:00:39.52\00:00:41.41
However before we do, as
we begin the day we want to
00:00:41.60\00:00:45.09
have a word of prayer
to ask that the Lord will
00:00:45.12\00:00:47.59
guide our thoughts and
our study during this day.
00:00:47.62\00:00:50.85
And so I invite you
to bow your heads with me
00:00:51.09\00:00:52.94
as we implore
the Lord's presence.
00:00:52.97\00:00:55.03
Father in heaven, we
come before You this morning
00:00:55.55\00:00:57.72
to thank You for
Your multiple blessings
00:00:57.75\00:01:00.90
that You've poured out upon us.
00:01:00.93\00:01:02.57
So many things that
we take for granted;
00:01:02.82\00:01:04.77
clothing, food, shelter.
00:01:05.26\00:01:07.72
Just so many things
that we sometimes consider
00:01:07.92\00:01:10.94
to be automatic, but we
know that everything is a
00:01:10.97\00:01:13.60
blessing from Your hands.
00:01:13.63\00:01:15.17
We especially
thank You for Your Word,
00:01:15.55\00:01:18.04
which is a sure guide in
a world that is so confused.
00:01:18.34\00:01:21.60
We ask that as we
open that Word this morning
00:01:21.98\00:01:24.34
that Your Holy
Spirit who inspired the Word
00:01:24.37\00:01:26.71
will be present
with us to instruct us
00:01:26.81\00:01:29.94
about those things
that are important for our
00:01:29.97\00:01:31.95
spiritual walk with Jesus
and our preparation for the
00:01:31.98\00:01:35.04
close of probation.
00:01:35.07\00:01:36.52
We thank You,
Father, for Your presence,
00:01:36.73\00:01:38.75
and we thank You
for hearing our prayer.
00:01:39.11\00:01:41.01
For we ask it in
Jesus' name, amen.
00:01:41.04\00:01:43.89
In our last session
yesterday we were talking about
00:01:45.28\00:01:47.57
futurism, the
dangers of futurism,
00:01:47.60\00:01:50.59
to the
Seventh-day Adventist message.
00:01:50.62\00:01:52.47
And there are some statements
from the spirit of prophecy
00:01:52.92\00:01:56.15
that show that Ellen
White understood the dangers
00:01:56.18\00:02:00.28
of futurism when it comes to the
Seventh-day Adventist message.
00:02:00.31\00:02:03.92
And I'd like to
read those statements.
00:02:04.43\00:02:06.14
They're found in your
syllabus beginning on page 13.
00:02:06.17\00:02:10.11
At the bottom of the page you're
going to find several statements
00:02:10.14\00:02:13.07
that I want to read now
that show that Ellen White
00:02:13.10\00:02:15.62
was aware of futurism.
00:02:15.65\00:02:17.52
And by the way, futurism
started gaining strength
00:02:17.55\00:02:22.38
in the 1830's and the
1840's, believe it or not,
00:02:22.62\00:02:26.60
during the times that
God raised Ellen White
00:02:26.63\00:02:29.44
to be a prophet
for the remnant church.
00:02:29.47\00:02:31.59
So it's significant that
Ellen White recognized the
00:02:31.84\00:02:34.23
dangers of projecting
the three angels' messages
00:02:34.26\00:02:37.58
to the past or to the future.
00:02:37.61\00:02:39.53
So I'm reading at
the bottom of page 13,
00:02:39.84\00:02:42.23
"There are those now living who,
in studying the prophecies of
00:02:43.10\00:02:47.91
Daniel and John,
received great light from God
00:02:47.94\00:02:51.98
as they passed over the
ground where special prophecies
00:02:52.01\00:02:55.51
were in process of
fulfillment in their order."
00:02:55.61\00:03:00.49
That's important.
00:03:01.55\00:03:02.66
So the fulfillment
of prophecy is a what?
00:03:03.08\00:03:06.24
A process.
00:03:07.08\00:03:08.67
That's historicism.
00:03:09.02\00:03:10.09
That's the
historical flow method.
00:03:10.12\00:03:11.97
And you'll notice
that they have an order.
00:03:12.19\00:03:15.24
She continues saying,
"They bore the message
00:03:16.15\00:03:19.98
of time to the people.
00:03:20.01\00:03:21.83
The truth shone out
clearly as the sun at noonday.
00:03:22.28\00:03:27.41
Historical events, showing the
direct fulfillment of prophecy,
00:03:27.77\00:03:32.35
were set before the people,
and the prophecy was seen to be
00:03:32.38\00:03:37.10
a figurative..." Now
notice the next word.
00:03:37.13\00:03:39.76
What's the next word?
00:03:39.79\00:03:40.96
Delineation.
00:03:41.16\00:03:42.33
See, it's a line of prophecy.
00:03:42.36\00:03:44.02
"...delineation of
events leading down to the close
00:03:44.05\00:03:48.43
of this earth's history."
00:03:48.46\00:03:49.80
See, there's the
historical flow method.
00:03:49.83\00:03:51.49
It's a delineation.
00:03:51.52\00:03:53.09
It is a process, the words that
she's using, in their order.
00:03:53.32\00:03:58.77
She continues saying,
"Some will take the truth
00:03:59.24\00:04:02.60
applicable to their time
and place it in the future.
00:04:02.63\00:04:06.57
Events in the train..."
00:04:07.49\00:04:09.19
Do you notice that word also?
00:04:09.22\00:04:10.67
"Train."
00:04:10.70\00:04:11.81
Key words that she's using.
00:04:12.04\00:04:14.17
"Events in the train of prophecy
that had their fulfillment
00:04:14.39\00:04:19.02
away in the past are
made future, and thus by these
00:04:19.05\00:04:23.41
theories the faith
of some is undermined.
00:04:23.44\00:04:26.59
From the light that the Lord
has been pleased to give me,
00:04:27.03\00:04:30.00
you are in danger of
doing the same work..."
00:04:30.20\00:04:32.92
She's writing to a
teacher whose last name is Bell.
00:04:32.95\00:04:35.77
"...presenting before
others truths which have had
00:04:35.93\00:04:39.85
their place and done their
specific work for the time,
00:04:39.88\00:04:44.28
in the history of the
faith of the people of God.
00:04:44.48\00:04:47.71
You recognize these
facts in Bible history as true,
00:04:48.22\00:04:51.60
but apply them to the future.
00:04:51.63\00:04:53.99
They have their force
still in their proper place,
00:04:54.23\00:04:59.01
in the chain..."
00:04:59.04\00:05:00.46
Notice all the
synonyms that she's using.
00:05:00.49\00:05:02.20
"...in the chain of
events that have made us
00:05:02.23\00:05:05.64
as a people what we are today,
and as such, they are to be
00:05:05.67\00:05:10.08
presented to those who
are in the darkness of error."
00:05:10.11\00:05:13.72
Interesting statements.
00:05:14.31\00:05:15.99
She continues saying,
"The truths that have been..."
00:05:16.72\00:05:21.21
Now what's the next word?
00:05:21.24\00:05:22.64
"...unfolding in their
order, as we have advanced along
00:05:23.20\00:05:28.74
the line of prophecy
revealed in the Word of God,
00:05:28.77\00:05:33.27
are truth, sacred,
eternal truth today.
00:05:33.30\00:05:36.39
Those who passed over
the ground step by step
00:05:36.71\00:05:39.19
in the past history of our
experience, seeing the chain
00:05:39.22\00:05:43.51
of truth in the prophecies,
were prepared to accept and obey
00:05:43.54\00:05:47.69
every ray of light."
00:05:47.72\00:05:49.61
She continues saying,
"The first and second messages
00:05:49.97\00:05:53.18
were given in 1843 and
1844, and we are now under the
00:05:53.21\00:05:58.15
proclamation of the
third; but all three of the
00:05:58.18\00:06:01.62
messages are
still to be proclaimed.
00:06:01.65\00:06:04.03
It is just as essential
now as ever before that they
00:06:04.36\00:06:08.19
shall be repeated to those
who are seeking for the truth.
00:06:08.22\00:06:11.64
By pen and voice we are
to sound the proclamation,
00:06:11.74\00:06:15.49
showing their order, and the
application of the prophecies
00:06:15.59\00:06:20.02
that bring us to the
third angel's message.
00:06:20.05\00:06:23.02
There cannot be a third
without the first and second.
00:06:23.25\00:06:27.53
These messages we are to give
to the world in publications,
00:06:27.73\00:06:31.90
in discourses,
showing in the..." What?
00:06:31.93\00:06:35.59
"...in the line of prophetic
history the things that
00:06:36.12\00:06:40.44
have been and the
things that will be."
00:06:40.47\00:06:44.41
So clear.
00:06:45.15\00:06:46.70
And then we have
another couple of statements.
00:06:47.03\00:06:49.39
All these are from the letter
that she wrote to this teacher.
00:06:49.42\00:06:52.24
I believe that he was
a primary school teacher.
00:06:52.68\00:06:56.49
She continues saying, "All that
God has in prophetic history
00:06:57.56\00:07:01.72
specified to be
fulfilled in the past has been,
00:07:01.75\00:07:05.46
and all that is yet to
come in its order will be."
00:07:05.76\00:07:10.31
And then finally she says,
"Theories will be continually
00:07:10.81\00:07:15.17
agitated to divert the
mind, to unsettle the faith.
00:07:15.20\00:07:20.18
Those who have had the actual
experience in the unfolding
00:07:20.48\00:07:25.14
of the prophecies have
been made what they are today,
00:07:25.17\00:07:29.15
Seventh-day Adventists,
by these prophecies."
00:07:29.18\00:07:33.17
How is it that we were
made Seventh-day Adventists?
00:07:34.09\00:07:36.12
By the prophecies.
00:07:36.80\00:07:38.84
We are a prophetic movement.
00:07:39.32\00:07:41.06
And so if you discard
prophecy, you discard the reason
00:07:41.72\00:07:46.00
for the existence of the
Seventh-day Adventist Church.
00:07:46.03\00:07:48.31
Because we originated
with prophecy and our destiny
00:07:48.60\00:07:52.05
is clothed in Bible prophecy.
00:07:52.08\00:07:54.31
And so Ellen White was
very aware of the importance
00:07:54.68\00:07:57.74
of recognizing the
historical flow method.
00:07:57.77\00:08:00.13
And she was also very aware
of the dangers of projecting
00:08:00.49\00:08:04.95
to the future or to the
past prophecies that had been
00:08:04.98\00:08:08.27
fulfilled or would be fulfilled
in their precise order.
00:08:08.30\00:08:12.67
Now we want to go
to principle number 6.
00:08:13.29\00:08:16.90
In this series we've
studied five principles so far.
00:08:17.00\00:08:20.04
And we have fourteen that
we're going to take a look at.
00:08:20.46\00:08:23.24
The latter ones are
going to take us more time,
00:08:23.27\00:08:25.67
as I mentioned in
our sessions before.
00:08:25.70\00:08:28.75
The sixth
principle is very important.
00:08:29.29\00:08:31.80
All true prophecy
finds Christ at its center
00:08:32.84\00:08:39.15
and Christ as its hero.
00:08:39.18\00:08:41.18
In other words, all
prophecy is Christ centered.
00:08:41.88\00:08:44.30
And we're going to follow
along what's in the syllabus,
00:08:44.40\00:08:46.75
and then I'm going to
give you some examples
00:08:46.78\00:08:48.93
of how important it
is to recognize Christ
00:08:49.03\00:08:51.57
as the center of
all Bible prophecy;
00:08:51.60\00:08:54.45
both the prophecies that
point to the first coming
00:08:54.65\00:08:57.28
and the prophecies that
point to the second coming.
00:08:57.31\00:08:59.69
Because there are
two kinds of prophecies;
00:08:59.72\00:09:01.78
one type points
to the first coming,
00:09:01.81\00:09:04.85
and the other type of prophecy
points to the second coming.
00:09:04.88\00:09:07.88
And we're going to take a
look at some of the prophecies
00:09:08.07\00:09:10.62
that pointed to the
first coming, and then later on
00:09:10.65\00:09:13.37
we're going to look
at prophecies that point
00:09:13.40\00:09:15.14
towards the second coming.
00:09:15.17\00:09:16.54
Now Christ is at the very
center of all Bible prophecies.
00:09:16.95\00:09:20.94
Prophecy is not event centered,
but rather Christ centered.
00:09:21.34\00:09:26.21
Jesus has delivered His
people from spiritual enemies
00:09:26.67\00:09:30.45
and spiritual death
as a result of His work
00:09:30.68\00:09:34.30
at the first coming.
00:09:34.33\00:09:35.73
But at the end of
time, Jesus will intervene
00:09:36.42\00:09:39.62
to deliver His people
literally from literal death.
00:09:39.72\00:09:43.85
Are you understanding
the principle here?
00:09:44.81\00:09:46.57
You know, Jesus, by
His death on the cross,
00:09:46.90\00:09:48.77
He delivered us spiritually
from spiritual bondage
00:09:48.80\00:09:51.24
and from spiritual death.
00:09:51.27\00:09:52.69
But at the end of time,
there will be a death decree
00:09:52.89\00:09:54.72
against God's people.
00:09:54.75\00:09:55.81
And Jesus will have to intervene
personally and literally
00:09:56.33\00:09:59.50
to deliver His
people from literal death.
00:09:59.53\00:10:01.80
Now we're going to take a
look at some of the prophecies
00:10:02.43\00:10:05.25
that dealt with Jesus delivering
us from spiritual death
00:10:05.28\00:10:09.94
and from spiritual bondage.
00:10:09.97\00:10:11.54
But before that, I would
like to go to this next section
00:10:11.64\00:10:15.01
that we have here.
00:10:15.04\00:10:16.23
And that is the importance
of the concept of the covenant.
00:10:16.26\00:10:19.63
The covenant is
central to the understanding
00:10:20.96\00:10:24.07
of all Bible prophecy.
00:10:24.27\00:10:25.82
And basically, the formula
that is used in the Bible
00:10:26.35\00:10:29.28
for the covenant is,
"I will be their God,
00:10:29.31\00:10:32.35
and they shall be My people."
00:10:32.38\00:10:34.02
And a covenant, of
course, means that God wants
00:10:34.75\00:10:37.80
to have a covenant with
His people, and His people
00:10:37.83\00:10:40.03
accept the terms of
the covenant, and they
00:10:40.06\00:10:42.41
enter into this covenant
relationship with Jesus Christ.
00:10:42.44\00:10:45.70
Now, when we enter a covenant
relationship with Jesus Christ,
00:10:46.24\00:10:49.66
Jesus commits Himself
to not only be our Savior,
00:10:50.02\00:10:55.28
but also to be our Protector.
00:10:55.31\00:10:57.18
Now you'll notice four
models that we have here
00:10:57.72\00:11:00.33
in our syllabus.
00:11:00.36\00:11:02.56
We have, first of
all, Suzerain and Vassal.
00:11:02.82\00:11:05.94
Now that word, "suzerain,"
might not make a lot of sense
00:11:05.97\00:11:09.10
to you, but it
means, "sovereign."
00:11:09.13\00:11:11.20
A sovereign.
00:11:11.57\00:11:12.87
And the word, "vassel,"
means, someone who is subject
00:11:13.45\00:11:16.79
to the sovereign.
00:11:16.82\00:11:18.01
Now let me
illustrate this point.
00:11:18.28\00:11:20.37
In antiquity, sometimes a
great king would make a covenant
00:11:20.40\00:11:25.16
with a lesser king
from a lesser nation.
00:11:25.19\00:11:27.36
And basically, the great king
would say to the lesser king,
00:11:27.84\00:11:30.98
"You know, I'm
willing to protect you if you
00:11:31.01\00:11:34.55
promise to be loyal to me."
00:11:34.58\00:11:36.39
And so the
covenant would be signed,
00:11:37.19\00:11:38.78
the agreement would be signed.
00:11:38.81\00:11:40.22
Now if a powerful
enemy came against the vassal
00:11:40.47\00:11:44.57
that had made the
covenant with the sovereign,
00:11:44.60\00:11:46.46
that nation that came
against the vassal was actually
00:11:47.00\00:11:52.15
fighting against the sovereign.
00:11:52.18\00:11:53.83
And so the sovereign
would intervene to protect
00:11:54.67\00:11:58.61
the nation that was
in covenant with him.
00:11:59.66\00:12:01.75
Are you understanding?
00:12:01.78\00:12:02.81
And so when we make
a covenant with Jesus,
00:12:02.89\00:12:05.51
Jesus commits Himself,
if we are loyal to Him,
00:12:05.61\00:12:08.72
that He is going to
intervene and He is going to
00:12:08.75\00:12:10.88
protect His people,
whether it be spiritually
00:12:10.91\00:12:13.27
or whether it be
literally, at the end of time.
00:12:13.30\00:12:15.90
Because Jesus is the
great Sovereign and we are
00:12:16.00\00:12:19.91
His vassals, so to speak.
00:12:19.94\00:12:21.65
We are His servants.
00:12:21.68\00:12:23.36
And so when we make
a covenant with Jesus,
00:12:23.39\00:12:25.65
Jesus promises to protect us
both spiritually and literally
00:12:25.85\00:12:30.90
at the end of time.
00:12:30.93\00:12:32.00
A second model we have is that
of a shepherd and his sheep.
00:12:32.75\00:12:35.83
Let me ask you, when a
bear and a lion came to devour
00:12:36.39\00:12:40.00
one of David's
sheep, what did David do?
00:12:40.03\00:12:43.47
Oh, he went after the lion
and he went after the bear.
00:12:44.28\00:12:47.89
Well, you know, the
fight of the bear and the lion
00:12:48.48\00:12:51.18
wasn't with David.
00:12:51.21\00:12:52.28
It was with the sheep.
00:12:53.14\00:12:54.61
Right?
00:12:55.12\00:12:56.15
But whoever touched David's
sheep was touching David.
00:12:56.18\00:12:59.61
And so Jesus is
the great Shepherd.
00:13:00.85\00:13:03.15
And we are His sheep.
00:13:03.47\00:13:04.79
And so when the wicked come to
attempt to destroy God's people
00:13:05.61\00:13:09.84
at the end of time by
attacking God's people,
00:13:09.87\00:13:13.38
by attacking the sheep,
they are attacking the Shepherd.
00:13:13.41\00:13:16.58
And because God's people are
in covenant with the Shepherd,
00:13:16.93\00:13:19.89
the Shepherd has committed
Himself to protect His sheep.
00:13:19.92\00:13:23.28
The next model
is husband and wife.
00:13:24.12\00:13:27.04
Jesus Christ is the Husband
and the church is His wife.
00:13:27.48\00:13:30.78
Now when the wicked at the
end of time come to beat up on
00:13:31.25\00:13:33.82
Christ's wife, Christ
says, "Now wait a minute.
00:13:33.85\00:13:36.36
You're messing with Me now.
00:13:36.39\00:13:38.91
Because that's My wife
that you're mistreating."
00:13:39.20\00:13:42.77
And so Jesus is committed.
00:13:42.80\00:13:44.60
If we have entered a marriage
covenant with Jesus Christ,
00:13:44.63\00:13:47.58
He has committed
Himself to be a good Husband
00:13:47.69\00:13:51.49
to protect us both
spiritually and literally
00:13:51.52\00:13:54.99
at the end of time.
00:13:55.02\00:13:56.09
The final model that we
have is the head and the body.
00:13:56.58\00:13:59.50
Let me ask you, when somebody
pricks you with a needle,
00:13:59.86\00:14:02.77
does your head feel it?
00:14:02.97\00:14:04.42
Of course. It's
your head that feels it.
00:14:05.27\00:14:07.45
In case you didn't realize
that, your head feels it.
00:14:07.94\00:14:10.99
Because your nervous system,
you know, informs the head.
00:14:11.02\00:14:13.18
And the head tells you, "Hey,
you got pricked with a needle."
00:14:13.21\00:14:15.86
So what happens?
00:14:16.12\00:14:17.63
Whatever affects the
body affects the head.
00:14:17.66\00:14:21.49
Now who is the
head of the church?
00:14:22.16\00:14:23.77
Jesus Christ is
the head of the church.
00:14:24.09\00:14:26.18
And what is His body?
00:14:26.21\00:14:27.90
His body is the church.
00:14:27.93\00:14:29.20
So what happens in the
end time when the wicked come
00:14:29.23\00:14:32.44
to try and destroy
the body of Christ?
00:14:32.47\00:14:34.84
Oh, they're messing with
the head, with Jesus Christ.
00:14:35.19\00:14:38.68
You remember when Saul of Tarsus
was on the road to Damascus
00:14:39.07\00:14:42.67
and he was going to arrest
Christians that were there
00:14:42.70\00:14:46.49
in Damascus, in Syria.
00:14:46.52\00:14:48.49
You know, he saw a
bright light from heaven
00:14:49.87\00:14:52.63
and he fell to the ground.
00:14:52.66\00:14:54.30
And he heard a voice
that said, "Saul, Saul,
00:14:54.33\00:14:56.73
why do you persecute Me?"
00:14:56.76\00:14:58.73
And Saul of
Tarsus, you know, he said,
00:15:00.56\00:15:02.42
"I'm going to
Damascus. Who is this?
00:15:03.60\00:15:05.37
You know, who are you?"
00:15:05.40\00:15:06.80
And Jesus said, "I
am Jesus of Nazareth
00:15:07.07\00:15:09.92
whom you are persecuting."
00:15:09.95\00:15:11.48
And I'm sure that Saul thought,
00:15:12.16\00:15:14.00
"Well, you're in
heaven, I'm down here.
00:15:14.03\00:15:15.52
How can I be persecuting you?"
00:15:15.55\00:15:17.15
Well, the fact is that by
persecuting the people of God,
00:15:17.18\00:15:20.43
he was persecuting
the God of the people.
00:15:20.46\00:15:22.63
Are you
understanding the principle?
00:15:23.83\00:15:25.55
The covenant principle
is vital for understanding
00:15:26.01\00:15:28.72
the prophecies that have
to do with the first coming,
00:15:28.75\00:15:31.65
and the prophecies that
have to do also with the
00:15:31.76\00:15:34.22
second coming of Christ.
00:15:34.25\00:15:35.61
When we enter a covenant
relationship with Jesus Christ,
00:15:35.64\00:15:38.62
Jesus commits Himself
to protect His people.
00:15:38.65\00:15:42.14
And you know, in
Matthew chapter 25
00:15:42.24\00:15:44.96
we have the scene of
the sheep and the goats.
00:15:44.99\00:15:47.33
Jesus places the
sheep at His right hand
00:15:48.10\00:15:50.29
and He places the
goats at His left hand.
00:15:50.54\00:15:53.07
And what does He
say to His sheep?
00:15:53.43\00:15:55.35
What does He say?
00:15:55.38\00:15:56.74
He says, "In that you
have done it unto one of these
00:15:57.27\00:16:01.64
the least, my brethren,
you have done it unto Me."
00:16:01.67\00:16:05.98
So the final battle, folks,
that we're going to study about
00:16:06.83\00:16:09.79
is not a battle of the
wicked directly against Christ.
00:16:10.15\00:16:15.56
You know, there's this idea
that the battle of Armageddon
00:16:15.93\00:16:18.75
is, you know, when
Jesus is coming on the clouds,
00:16:18.85\00:16:21.93
the wicked are
shooting nuclear weapons at Him.
00:16:21.96\00:16:24.71
Well, that's a futurist idea
and it's good for Hollywood.
00:16:25.72\00:16:29.50
But it's not biblical.
00:16:29.53\00:16:30.85
The fact is that the
final battle is that the wicked
00:16:31.36\00:16:35.68
will attempt to
destroy God's covenant people.
00:16:35.71\00:16:38.52
And Jesus will intervene
to protect them, because
00:16:38.55\00:16:42.07
He's going to say,
"Hey, that is My people.
00:16:42.10\00:16:45.17
And by attacking
them, you are attacking Me."
00:16:45.20\00:16:47.95
You know, the
same thing happened at
00:16:48.82\00:16:50.17
the edge of the Red Sea.
00:16:50.20\00:16:51.52
You remember when
Israel was trapped there at the
00:16:52.66\00:16:55.72
edge of the Red Sea.
00:16:55.75\00:16:56.81
They had no escape.
00:16:56.84\00:16:58.79
But God opened the waters
00:16:58.82\00:17:00.27
and Israel passed
through the waters.
00:17:00.30\00:17:02.12
Now the sea was still
open, so the Egyptians
00:17:02.38\00:17:05.00
now come into the sea.
00:17:05.03\00:17:06.69
And when they're in
the midst of the sea,
00:17:06.80\00:17:09.08
the Bible tells us
that God took the wheels
00:17:09.86\00:17:12.13
off of their chariots.
00:17:12.16\00:17:13.53
And did you realize
what the Egyptians said?
00:17:13.56\00:17:17.03
They said, "The
Lord fights for Israel.
00:17:17.48\00:17:20.49
Let's flee."
00:17:20.52\00:17:21.84
And so in
fighting the people of God,
00:17:22.61\00:17:27.86
they were fighting
the God of the people.
00:17:27.89\00:17:29.98
That's the way we are to
understand the final battle.
00:17:30.16\00:17:33.23
It is not a battle
directly against God.
00:17:33.26\00:17:36.03
It is a battle
against God's people.
00:17:36.06\00:17:39.32
And by fighting
against God's covenant people,
00:17:39.35\00:17:41.87
they are fighting against God.
00:17:41.90\00:17:44.39
Is that point clear?
00:17:44.42\00:17:45.65
Vitally important to understand,
particularly end time prophecy.
00:17:45.75\00:17:49.86
Now some Christians say,
"Well, you know, I believe
00:17:50.20\00:17:53.29
in the New Testament.
00:17:53.32\00:17:54.38
I'm a New Testament Christian.
00:17:54.41\00:17:56.19
You Adventists, you know,
you're Old Testament Christians.
00:17:56.39\00:17:58.84
We're New Testament Christians."
00:17:58.87\00:18:00.34
The fact is, folks, that
both the Old and New Testaments
00:18:00.37\00:18:03.77
are centered in Jesus Christ.
00:18:03.80\00:18:05.71
And I have next in our
syllabus illustrations of this.
00:18:06.20\00:18:10.58
They're, you know, analogies
that will help us understand
00:18:10.64\00:18:13.53
the relationship between
the Old and New Testament.
00:18:13.82\00:18:16.58
First of all, I like to compare
the Old Testament with sand.
00:18:16.61\00:18:21.86
The Old Testament is sand.
00:18:21.89\00:18:23.41
The New Testament is the water.
00:18:24.37\00:18:26.30
And Christ is the cement.
00:18:26.85\00:18:28.73
Are you with me?
00:18:31.70\00:18:32.73
It makes it concrete.
00:18:33.38\00:18:35.47
That's what
makes concrete, right?
00:18:35.58\00:18:37.65
That's what connects
the Old and New Testaments.
00:18:37.92\00:18:41.23
The Old
Testament is like the moon
00:18:41.26\00:18:43.08
and the New
Testament is like the sun.
00:18:43.11\00:18:44.92
See, the Old Testament...
00:18:45.68\00:18:46.92
Where does the
moon get its light?
00:18:47.16\00:18:48.89
The moon gets its
light from the sun.
00:18:50.01\00:18:52.81
The glory of the moon
is the glory of the sun.
00:18:53.53\00:18:55.58
So what was the Old Testament?
00:18:55.72\00:18:57.25
The Old Testament
was like the moon.
00:18:57.28\00:18:59.21
In other words,
it's reflected light.
00:18:59.68\00:19:01.94
All of the symbols and
ceremonies that you find
00:19:01.97\00:19:04.56
in the Old Testament
are actually a shadow.
00:19:04.59\00:19:08.64
They are actually
the light of the moon,
00:19:08.67\00:19:10.76
but the light is projected
by Jesus Christ, the sun.
00:19:10.79\00:19:14.12
Jesus Christ is the
center, in other words,
00:19:14.15\00:19:17.07
of the Old Testament.
00:19:17.10\00:19:18.45
But the light of the Old
Testament is reflected light.
00:19:18.48\00:19:21.59
Jesus is the reality.
00:19:21.87\00:19:24.00
The Old Testament
is like a scale model.
00:19:24.45\00:19:26.64
Have you ever
seen a scale model?
00:19:27.31\00:19:28.85
You know, they had a
little mock model of...
00:19:29.44\00:19:32.58
I remember when they were going
to add to the Fresno airport.
00:19:32.61\00:19:36.75
You know, they had in the lobby,
they had a case where they
00:19:37.12\00:19:42.10
had a little mock model of
what it was going to look like
00:19:42.13\00:19:45.64
when the project was finished.
00:19:45.67\00:19:47.18
And you know, as you
look at the airport today,
00:19:47.66\00:19:49.60
it's just like it
was in the scale model.
00:19:49.63\00:19:52.01
But the scale
model is not the reality.
00:19:52.74\00:19:55.16
The scale model
is a lot smaller.
00:19:55.19\00:19:57.20
But it gives you an
idea about what the project
00:19:57.95\00:20:00.99
is going to look like.
00:20:01.02\00:20:02.22
And so the Old
Testament is the scale model.
00:20:02.32\00:20:04.77
It's the little
miniature model, if you please.
00:20:05.14\00:20:08.02
And then when you look at
Christ, you see the reality.
00:20:08.22\00:20:11.55
You see fullness of what
the small scale model points to.
00:20:11.58\00:20:15.85
I like to consider the
Old Testament as a shadow
00:20:16.39\00:20:18.83
and the New Testament as the
reality that casts the shadow.
00:20:18.86\00:20:22.50
See, Jesus is the reality.
00:20:23.42\00:20:26.81
And Jesus casts His
light on the Old Testament,
00:20:27.87\00:20:33.06
and then the Old
Testament is the shadow.
00:20:33.09\00:20:35.06
And when you see a
shadow, you know that there's a
00:20:35.09\00:20:37.65
reality that's
projecting the shadow, right?
00:20:37.68\00:20:40.12
For example, if you're
walking down the street
00:20:40.66\00:20:42.50
and you see a shadow of a post,
you know you better be careful
00:20:42.93\00:20:46.80
because there's a post
that's projecting the shadow.
00:20:46.83\00:20:48.77
Right?
00:20:48.80\00:20:49.91
You better make sure that
you don't walk into the post.
00:20:50.19\00:20:52.59
The shadow tells you
that there's a reality,
00:20:53.01\00:20:55.66
that there's a concrete reality.
00:20:55.87\00:20:57.63
And so all of the Old Testament
is a shadow that helps us
00:20:57.95\00:21:01.78
understand that there was going
to be a reality in the future
00:21:01.82\00:21:05.10
that projects that shadow.
00:21:05.13\00:21:06.32
And of course, that reality
is none other than Jesus Christ.
00:21:06.35\00:21:09.91
The Old Testament
is like a picture.
00:21:10.55\00:21:12.57
Does a picture give you
a good idea about someone?
00:21:13.53\00:21:16.47
Yeah, it does.
00:21:16.97\00:21:18.00
It tells you about
the color of their skin,
00:21:18.03\00:21:19.87
it tells you about
the color of their hair,
00:21:19.90\00:21:21.95
it tells you about
the color of their eyes.
00:21:21.98\00:21:23.55
It, you know, shows
the features of their face.
00:21:23.84\00:21:26.38
And if it's a body shot,
it shows you how they dress.
00:21:26.41\00:21:29.04
You know, it gives you
a pretty good idea about
00:21:29.25\00:21:31.22
what the person is like.
00:21:31.25\00:21:32.48
But is it very different
to see the person in person?
00:21:32.68\00:21:35.80
Of course it is.
00:21:36.12\00:21:37.15
So the Old
Testament is the picture.
00:21:37.22\00:21:39.17
And the New
Testament is the reality
00:21:39.87\00:21:42.99
of what the picture portrays.
00:21:43.19\00:21:45.19
The Old
Testament is the pattern.
00:21:45.84\00:21:47.99
And the New Testament
is the finished garment.
00:21:49.00\00:21:51.80
Are you following me?
00:21:53.06\00:21:54.15
The Bible is composed
of prophets and apostles.
00:21:55.90\00:21:59.39
But Jesus Christ is what?
00:21:59.74\00:22:02.09
Jesus Christ is
the chief corner stone.
00:22:02.19\00:22:04.54
In other words, Jesus is
the one who holds together
00:22:04.64\00:22:08.30
the structure when you
relate the Old and New Testament
00:22:08.63\00:22:12.30
to one another.
00:22:12.33\00:22:13.36
It's no such thing that the
Old Testament is law centered
00:22:13.39\00:22:17.01
and the New
Testament is grace centered.
00:22:17.04\00:22:19.01
No, there is law and
grace in both Testaments.
00:22:19.04\00:22:21.66
But the Old
Testament is reflected light,
00:22:21.69\00:22:25.33
whereas the New
Testament is original light.
00:22:25.36\00:22:27.75
Because Jesus Christ is
the reality towards which
00:22:27.78\00:22:31.59
the Old Testament points.
00:22:31.62\00:22:33.78
Take for example the Sanctuary.
00:22:34.85\00:22:38.04
The Hebrew Sanctuary,
which we're going to study
00:22:38.91\00:22:40.99
in more detail a little
bit later on in this class,
00:22:41.09\00:22:43.71
gives us the events
of the plan of Salvation;
00:22:44.41\00:22:48.94
the steps that Jesus Christ
takes in saving us from sin.
00:22:48.97\00:22:52.50
It begins in the camp.
00:22:53.25\00:22:54.74
It continues in the court.
00:22:55.32\00:22:56.98
And the court, of course,
has the altar of sacrifice.
00:22:57.01\00:22:59.34
That represents the sacrifice
of Christ on the cross.
00:22:59.37\00:23:02.48
Then you have the
laver where the priest washed
00:23:02.73\00:23:05.57
before he went to
minister into the Holy Place
00:23:05.60\00:23:07.48
after he had
offered the sacrifices.
00:23:07.51\00:23:09.35
Jesus cleansed
Himself from death.
00:23:09.57\00:23:12.69
In other words, He came forth
from the tomb to die no more.
00:23:12.72\00:23:15.27
Because, remember that people
who touched a body were defiled.
00:23:15.30\00:23:18.24
Because death defiles.
00:23:18.34\00:23:19.73
Well Jesus cleanses
Himself at the laver
00:23:19.76\00:23:21.87
from the defilement of death.
00:23:21.90\00:23:23.65
And so now He resurrects
at the laver, which is called
00:23:24.36\00:23:27.19
the laver of
regeneration in Titus 3 verse 5.
00:23:27.22\00:23:29.92
And to regenerate
means to give new life.
00:23:29.95\00:23:32.02
And then He enters
into the Holy Place
00:23:32.23\00:23:34.57
to apply the
benefits of His life and death
00:23:34.60\00:23:37.28
to those who
come to Him in faith.
00:23:37.31\00:23:39.06
Because the death of
Jesus and the life of Jesus
00:23:39.90\00:23:43.20
were for everyone.
00:23:43.35\00:23:45.67
Jesus lived for all
and He died for all.
00:23:46.03\00:23:48.66
You see, I can't
offer the law perfection.
00:23:48.95\00:23:51.27
And so I needed
someone who could offer the law
00:23:51.67\00:23:54.31
perfection in my place.
00:23:54.34\00:23:55.51
So Jesus came and lived
the life that I should live.
00:23:55.54\00:23:57.96
That everyone should live.
00:23:58.49\00:23:59.88
You know, I don't want
to die, I want to live.
00:24:00.42\00:24:03.30
So Jesus says, "I'll
take your death upon Myself."
00:24:03.33\00:24:05.72
So Jesus lived for everyone,
00:24:05.75\00:24:07.49
and Jesus died for every
single person who has ever
00:24:07.52\00:24:09.63
lived in the
history of planet earth.
00:24:09.66\00:24:11.30
Does that mean that
everybody is going to benefit
00:24:11.75\00:24:13.86
from His life and His death?
00:24:13.89\00:24:15.41
No, that's where His ministry
in the Holy Place comes.
00:24:15.54\00:24:18.90
In the Holy Place, now people
can come and they can say to
00:24:19.01\00:24:22.97
Jesus, "Jesus, I repent of
my sins, I confess my sins.
00:24:23.00\00:24:26.82
I trust in Your righteousness.
00:24:26.85\00:24:28.60
Please, Jesus, take
Your life and Your death
00:24:28.63\00:24:31.33
and place them to my account."
00:24:31.36\00:24:32.69
And then I am
benefited by what Jesus did
00:24:32.72\00:24:36.25
by His life and His death.
00:24:36.28\00:24:37.71
In other words, the work in
the Holy Place is individual.
00:24:38.81\00:24:42.39
The work in the camp and
in the court is corporate.
00:24:42.49\00:24:46.00
It's for everybody.
00:24:46.18\00:24:47.39
But you only benefit
from it when you claim it
00:24:47.49\00:24:50.04
personally and individually.
00:24:50.07\00:24:51.54
Are you following me?
00:24:51.64\00:24:52.68
And then, of course, Jesus moves
into the Most Holy Place, 1844.
00:24:53.00\00:24:56.75
See, you have dates for
all of these, don't you.
00:24:56.78\00:24:58.92
In a moment I'm
going to get to the dates.
00:24:59.31\00:25:01.28
And so Jesus moves
into the Most Holy Place
00:25:01.31\00:25:04.08
and examines all of the cases to
see who truly repented from sin.
00:25:04.11\00:25:09.96
Because there's a
lot of crocodile tears.
00:25:10.61\00:25:12.75
Right?
00:25:12.80\00:25:13.83
And so the purpose of the
judgment is for Jesus to reveal
00:25:13.86\00:25:16.98
who was a genuine
follower of Jesus.
00:25:17.01\00:25:20.41
Because there's a
lot of counterfeits.
00:25:21.32\00:25:22.73
There's wheat and there's tares.
00:25:22.76\00:25:24.89
There's wise
virgins and foolish virgins.
00:25:24.92\00:25:27.01
There's good fish and bad fish.
00:25:27.04\00:25:28.86
There are people who have
the appearance of godliness
00:25:28.89\00:25:31.32
but don't have godliness.
00:25:31.35\00:25:32.71
There are people
who say, "Lord, Lord,"
00:25:32.74\00:25:34.70
but Jesus says,
"I don't know you."
00:25:34.73\00:25:36.32
And so there's two
kinds of believers.
00:25:37.31\00:25:39.23
The purpose of the judgment
is to reveal to the universe
00:25:39.26\00:25:41.85
who was a true believer.
00:25:41.88\00:25:43.64
And for that, you
have to open the records.
00:25:43.89\00:25:46.16
Are you with me?
00:25:46.19\00:25:47.22
And when every
case has been examined,
00:25:47.66\00:25:49.20
then all of the sins
that have been forgiven
00:25:49.23\00:25:52.04
by the blood of Jesus are
now taken, and Jesus moves
00:25:52.07\00:25:56.27
once again to the entrance
of the Sanctuary, the court.
00:25:56.30\00:25:58.80
The court is the
earth, by the way.
00:25:59.08\00:26:00.74
Because that represents
the earthly work of Christ.
00:26:00.77\00:26:03.26
Then Jesus takes
all those sins that have
00:26:03.57\00:26:05.52
already been forgiven...
00:26:05.55\00:26:06.58
The scapegoat
doesn't forgive sins.
00:26:06.61\00:26:07.92
They were forgiven already.
00:26:07.95\00:26:09.40
...and He places them on
the head of the scapegoat.
00:26:09.50\00:26:11.67
And he's sent to the wilderness
and ultimately destroyed.
00:26:11.77\00:26:15.02
What do you have
in the Sanctuary?
00:26:15.05\00:26:16.37
You have the world view of the
Seventh-day Adventist Church.
00:26:16.40\00:26:19.28
You have the
whole plan of salvation
00:26:20.37\00:26:22.19
illustrated in a building.
00:26:22.49\00:26:24.30
So is the Sanctuary important?
00:26:26.00\00:26:28.22
Yes, but what is more real;
00:26:28.62\00:26:31.29
what Jesus does or the
Sanctuary little scale model?
00:26:31.32\00:26:35.44
See, the purpose of the
scale model is to point to
00:26:36.22\00:26:38.88
something far greater; to Jesus.
00:26:38.91\00:26:41.19
And then, of
course, you have the feasts.
00:26:41.82\00:26:43.55
The feasts give us the
calendar of Christ's events.
00:26:44.00\00:26:47.27
See, the Sanctuary
tells us what the events are.
00:26:48.37\00:26:50.74
The feasts tell us when
those events take place.
00:26:50.77\00:26:53.35
Passover; there you
have the altar of sacrifice.
00:26:54.07\00:26:57.49
And then you have
the death of Jesus,
00:26:58.16\00:27:01.21
which is at the
altar of sacrifice.
00:27:01.58\00:27:04.56
You have His resurrection.
00:27:04.66\00:27:05.93
Remember the feast
of the first fruits?
00:27:05.96\00:27:07.68
And by the way,
while He's in the tomb,
00:27:08.09\00:27:09.68
that's the first
day of unleavened bread.
00:27:09.71\00:27:11.49
So you have, you
know, the death of Jesus
00:27:11.82\00:27:14.78
at the altar of Sacrifice,
the fourteenth of Nisan.
00:27:14.88\00:27:17.61
Then you have the first
day of unleavened bread.
00:27:17.82\00:27:20.11
That's the fifteenth of Nisan.
00:27:20.14\00:27:21.87
And then you have the
first fruits, His resurrection,
00:27:21.97\00:27:24.97
according to Paul in 1
Corinthians 15 verse 20.
00:27:25.00\00:27:27.73
And that takes place
on the sixteenth of Nisan.
00:27:27.80\00:27:31.21
And then 50 days later you
have the feast of Pentecost
00:27:31.24\00:27:34.73
when Jesus
enters the Holy Place.
00:27:34.76\00:27:36.57
And then you have in 1844,
He enters the Most Holy Place
00:27:37.37\00:27:43.04
of the Sanctuary.
00:27:43.07\00:27:44.30
So the feasts are the
calendar of the Messiah,
00:27:44.33\00:27:47.54
whereas the Sanctuary portrays
the events of the Messiah.
00:27:47.57\00:27:51.47
How could you ever
understand any of this
00:27:52.13\00:27:53.71
without the Old Testament?
00:27:53.74\00:27:55.16
It's impossible.
00:27:55.74\00:27:56.82
Christians don't realize that
by saying that the Old Testament
00:27:57.33\00:28:00.37
was for the Jews and,
you know, the Old Testament
00:28:00.40\00:28:02.83
is not for Christians and
we're New Testament Christians,
00:28:03.07\00:28:06.36
they don't realize that
without the Old Testament
00:28:06.39\00:28:09.40
there's no way you can
understand the New Testament.
00:28:09.43\00:28:11.67
It's an impossibility.
00:28:11.70\00:28:13.00
Now, let's examine some Bible
text where we are told that
00:28:13.58\00:28:18.74
Jesus is the center
of the Old Testament.
00:28:18.77\00:28:22.21
Let's go to John chapter 5.
00:28:22.44\00:28:23.98
You have several of these.
00:28:24.01\00:28:25.04
I'm not sure that we're
going to read all of them,
00:28:25.07\00:28:26.88
but we'll read some of
the more significant ones.
00:28:27.17\00:28:30.33
John chapter 5 and verse 39,
00:28:30.36\00:28:34.04
and then we'll
read verses 45 to 47.
00:28:34.40\00:28:37.74
John chapter 5 verse 39,
and then verses 45 to 47.
00:28:37.77\00:28:43.40
Verse 39 says, and
Jesus is speaking to the Jews,
00:28:43.43\00:28:48.06
"You search the Scriptures..."
00:28:49.28\00:28:51.16
Which Scriptures would those be?
00:28:51.82\00:28:53.65
It has to be the Old Testament.
00:28:54.75\00:28:55.78
There was no New Testament
when Jesus spoke these words.
00:28:55.81\00:28:58.59
So, "You search the Scriptures,
for in them you think
00:28:58.79\00:29:02.04
you have eternal life; and these
are they which testify of Me."
00:29:02.07\00:29:07.41
And then He says in verse
40, "But you are not willing to
00:29:09.66\00:29:13.09
come to Me that
you may have life."
00:29:13.12\00:29:14.93
In other words, "You look for
eternal life in the Scriptures,
00:29:14.96\00:29:17.49
but you reject Me.
00:29:17.52\00:29:18.90
And the
Scriptures point towards Me."
00:29:19.52\00:29:21.16
Unbelievable.
00:29:21.85\00:29:22.88
And then verse 45.
00:29:23.39\00:29:24.98
Verse 45.
00:29:25.37\00:29:26.94
"Do not think that I
shall accuse you to the Father;
00:29:27.49\00:29:30.30
there is one who accuses
you; Moses, in whom you trust.
00:29:31.25\00:29:35.89
For if you believed
Moses, you would believe Me;
00:29:36.61\00:29:40.99
for he wrote about Me.
00:29:41.68\00:29:44.11
But if you do not
believe his writings,
00:29:44.69\00:29:46.72
how will you believe My words?"
00:29:46.75\00:29:49.19
About whom did Moses write?
00:29:49.22\00:29:51.01
Moses wrote about Jesus.
00:29:51.60\00:29:53.83
Jesus says, "You
claim to trust in Moses.
00:29:54.15\00:29:56.83
You say you love Moses.
00:29:56.86\00:29:59.54
But you don't love Me.
00:30:00.46\00:30:01.79
You're contradicting yourselves,
because Moses wrote about Me.
00:30:01.82\00:30:05.13
So if you really love
Moses you would love Me,
00:30:05.79\00:30:08.09
because Moses wrote about Me."
00:30:08.12\00:30:09.92
In claiming to accept
Moses but not accepting Christ,
00:30:11.85\00:30:16.32
they were not
accepting Moses either.
00:30:16.35\00:30:18.18
Now let's go on.
00:30:19.41\00:30:21.20
Well verse 47 says, "But if
you do not believe his writings,
00:30:22.59\00:30:25.70
how will you believe My words?"
00:30:25.73\00:30:28.35
Now let's go to Luke 24.
00:30:28.59\00:30:30.43
This is an interesting passage.
00:30:30.72\00:30:32.21
Luke 24 and we'll
read verses 25 to 27.
00:30:32.24\00:30:36.57
This is on the road to Emmaus.
00:30:36.60\00:30:38.30
Remember the
experience of the two disciples
00:30:38.33\00:30:39.97
on the road to Emmaus?
00:30:40.00\00:30:41.29
Well Jesus catches up to them.
00:30:41.84\00:30:44.05
And let's read
about what happened.
00:30:44.98\00:30:48.24
Luke 24 and
beginning with verse 25.
00:30:50.11\00:30:54.13
"Then He said to
them, 'O foolish ones,
00:30:54.89\00:30:59.03
and slow of heart to believe all
that the prophets have spoken.
00:30:59.06\00:31:04.02
Ought not the Christ to
have suffered these things
00:31:05.35\00:31:07.92
and to enter into His glory?'"
00:31:07.95\00:31:09.84
Now I would have liked to
have been at this Bible study.
00:31:09.87\00:31:12.23
It was a long walk.
00:31:14.39\00:31:15.84
Verse 27, "And beginning
at Moses and all the Prophets,
00:31:16.54\00:31:23.98
He expounded to them
in all the Scriptures
00:31:24.58\00:31:27.77
the things concerning Himself."
00:31:28.19\00:31:30.60
You know, those
three expressions;
00:31:30.63\00:31:31.97
Moses, Prophets, Scriptures
or writings, is really the
00:31:32.00\00:31:37.12
three-fold division that the
Jews had of the Old Testament.
00:31:37.15\00:31:39.90
The Torah, the
Nevi'im, which is the Prophets,
00:31:40.25\00:31:44.23
and the Ketuvim,
which is the writings,
00:31:44.26\00:31:46.21
the rest of the Old Testament.
00:31:46.24\00:31:47.40
In other words,
Jesus is basically saying,
00:31:47.58\00:31:50.07
"Listen, the whole Old
Testament points to Me."
00:31:50.10\00:31:54.24
So it says, "And beginning
at Moses and all the Prophets,
00:31:56.57\00:31:59.40
He expounded to them
in all the Scriptures
00:31:59.43\00:32:01.19
the things concerning..." Whom?
00:32:01.22\00:32:03.45
"...the things
concerning Himself."
00:32:03.59\00:32:07.25
Now let's go to verses 44 to 47.
00:32:07.99\00:32:10.99
Here, Jesus is gathered with
His disciples in the upper room.
00:32:11.19\00:32:14.69
And I want you to
notice what happens there
00:32:15.23\00:32:17.36
beginning with verse
44 and through verse 47.
00:32:17.60\00:32:23.10
It says, "Then He said to
them, 'These are the words which
00:32:24.30\00:32:27.55
I spoke to you while I was
still with you, that all things
00:32:27.58\00:32:31.60
must be fulfilled which
were written in the Law of Moses
00:32:31.63\00:32:36.01
and the Prophets and
the Psalms concerning Me.'"
00:32:36.42\00:32:41.32
So who is at the
center of the Law of Moses?
00:32:42.87\00:32:45.84
Jesus.
00:32:46.15\00:32:47.18
Who is at the
center of the Prophets?
00:32:47.21\00:32:49.03
Jesus.
00:32:49.30\00:32:50.35
Who is at the
center of the Psalms?
00:32:50.38\00:32:52.34
Jesus.
00:32:52.54\00:32:53.88
"And He opened
their understanding,
00:32:54.72\00:32:56.77
that they might
comprehend the Scriptures."
00:32:56.80\00:32:59.20
Do you know what the key was?
00:33:00.12\00:33:01.79
The key was Christ.
00:33:02.24\00:33:03.46
Once they understood
Christ, the Old Testament
00:33:04.10\00:33:06.79
became a living book.
00:33:06.82\00:33:08.25
Verse 46, "Then He said
to them, 'Thus it is written,
00:33:08.80\00:33:13.10
and thus it was necessary for
the Christ to suffer and to rise
00:33:13.13\00:33:16.76
from the dead the third
day, and that repentance
00:33:16.79\00:33:19.32
and remission of sins
should be preached in His name
00:33:19.35\00:33:21.69
to all nations,
beginning at Jerusalem.
00:33:21.72\00:33:24.07
And you are
witnesses of these things.'"
00:33:24.10\00:33:27.45
And then He says, and we'll
come to this a little later,
00:33:27.48\00:33:30.18
"Behold, I send the
promise of My Father upon you;
00:33:30.21\00:33:33.32
but tarry in the city
of Jerusalem until you are
00:33:33.35\00:33:36.32
endued with power from on high."
00:33:36.35\00:33:38.51
And there were
certain prophecies that they
00:33:38.61\00:33:40.19
needed to understand
about the day of Pentecost.
00:33:40.22\00:33:42.56
And one of the reasons
why Jesus spent 40 days here
00:33:42.66\00:33:45.57
after His resurrection
is that He had to explain
00:33:45.60\00:33:48.00
to the disciples the prophecies
that had been fulfilled
00:33:48.03\00:33:51.17
in Him and the prophecies
that would be fulfilled
00:33:51.20\00:33:53.71
on the day of Pentecost.
00:33:53.74\00:33:55.03
And we'll see that very
clearly in a few moments.
00:33:55.06\00:33:58.53
Now let's go to
John 1 and verse 45.
00:33:58.56\00:34:01.71
John chapter 1 and verse 45.
00:34:02.41\00:34:05.63
It says there, "Philip
found Nathanael and said to him,
00:34:06.47\00:34:10.83
'We have found Him of
whom Moses in the law,
00:34:11.16\00:34:15.71
and also the prophets,
wrote; Jesus of Nazareth,
00:34:15.81\00:34:20.41
the son of Joseph.'"
00:34:20.44\00:34:22.03
Interesting.
00:34:23.55\00:34:24.64
This is early in
the ministry of Jesus.
00:34:24.76\00:34:26.66
And it's interesting that Philip
says, "We found the Messiah.
00:34:27.36\00:34:32.43
The Messiah that was
predicted in the Law of Moses,
00:34:32.75\00:34:36.74
and also in the Prophets."
00:34:36.77\00:34:38.86
Let's go to the
book of Acts now.
00:34:38.89\00:34:40.81
Acts chapter 10 and verse 43.
00:34:40.91\00:34:43.53
Acts chapter 10 and verse 43.
00:34:43.95\00:34:46.23
Same idea coming through.
00:34:46.64\00:34:48.31
It says there, "To
Him," that is to Jesus,
00:34:49.28\00:34:54.46
"all the prophets witness..."
00:34:54.89\00:34:57.32
How many
prophets witnessed to Him?
00:34:58.75\00:35:00.64
All.
00:35:00.93\00:35:01.96
"To Him all the prophets
witness that, through His name,
00:35:02.27\00:35:05.82
whoever believes in Him
will receive remission of sins."
00:35:05.85\00:35:10.65
And sometimes I ask
people, I says, "Did Jesus
00:35:12.25\00:35:14.66
forgive people's
sins at the cross?"
00:35:14.69\00:35:17.08
You know, when you ask
that in a non-Adventist church,
00:35:17.21\00:35:19.74
the answer is a
thunderous, "Yes."
00:35:19.77\00:35:22.32
And unfortunately, when you
ask it in the Adventist church,
00:35:23.57\00:35:26.93
it's not as thunderous,
but it is pretty thunderous
00:35:27.83\00:35:31.28
that people say, "Of course
He forgave sins at the cross."
00:35:31.63\00:35:35.11
Jesus did not
forgive sins at the cross.
00:35:35.33\00:35:37.66
Jesus made provision to
forgive sins at the cross.
00:35:38.53\00:35:41.86
Because forgiveness
is an individual thing.
00:35:42.10\00:35:44.54
And it requires repentance,
and it requires confession,
00:35:44.57\00:35:47.85
and it requires faith.
00:35:47.88\00:35:49.48
It is when you claim the
benefits of what Jesus did
00:35:50.95\00:35:55.13
with His life and His death that
He takes His life and His death
00:35:55.16\00:35:58.94
and places them to your account.
00:35:58.97\00:36:00.95
And he looks upon you
as if you had never sinned.
00:36:00.98\00:36:03.64
That's unique to
Seventh-day Adventist theology.
00:36:05.55\00:36:08.04
The other churches say,
"Oh, everything's the cross.
00:36:08.96\00:36:10.88
Jesus forgave people
at the cross, you know.
00:36:10.91\00:36:12.80
Everything took
place at the cross."
00:36:12.83\00:36:14.45
Well what has Jesus been
doing the last 2000 years then
00:36:14.58\00:36:18.45
in heaven?
00:36:19.38\00:36:20.43
Interceding.
00:36:20.46\00:36:21.65
Well, but if everything
was taken care of at the cross
00:36:22.06\00:36:24.13
and sins were forgiven there,
why does He need to intercede?
00:36:24.16\00:36:27.01
There is an individual
work that has to take place.
00:36:28.06\00:36:30.67
The individual work is
you claiming what Jesus did.
00:36:31.46\00:36:35.01
Last I knew, there's a
verse in the Bible that says,
00:36:35.75\00:36:37.81
"If we confess our sins,
He is faithful and just to
00:36:37.84\00:36:41.49
forgive our sins and cleanse
us from all unrighteousness."
00:36:41.52\00:36:44.33
So forgiveness comes
when we confess our sins.
00:36:44.70\00:36:47.19
And we confess them
because we're repentant
00:36:47.41\00:36:49.46
and we trust in Jesus.
00:36:49.49\00:36:51.01
So this verse says, "To Him
all the prophets witness that,
00:36:51.04\00:36:54.41
through His name,
whoever believes in Him
00:36:54.44\00:36:57.56
will receive remission,"
or forgiveness, "of sins."
00:36:57.59\00:36:59.68
Remission is the
same thing as forgiveness.
00:36:59.71\00:37:01.89
Let's go to Acts
26 verses 22 and 23.
00:37:02.19\00:37:06.70
Acts 26 verses 22 and 23.
00:37:06.80\00:37:09.48
Once again the same theme,
to whom do the prophecies point?
00:37:10.55\00:37:15.65
To whom does the
Old Testament point?
00:37:15.68\00:37:17.42
Acts 26 verses 22 and 23.
00:37:17.45\00:37:21.73
It says there, "Therefore,
having obtained help from God,
00:37:21.96\00:37:26.27
to this day I stand,"
this is Paul who's speaking,
00:37:26.74\00:37:30.02
"witnessing both to small and
great, saying no other things
00:37:30.05\00:37:34.61
than those which the prophets
and Moses said would come..."
00:37:34.67\00:37:38.70
And here's what they said.
00:37:39.12\00:37:40.46
"...that the Christ
would suffer, that He would be
00:37:40.62\00:37:43.39
first to rise from the dead,
and would proclaim light to the
00:37:43.42\00:37:46.97
Jewish people
and to the Gentiles."
00:37:47.00\00:37:49.72
So you'll notice that
there's several things here.
00:37:50.09\00:37:52.29
First of all,
that He would suffer.
00:37:52.32\00:37:54.26
Secondly, that He
would rise from the dead.
00:37:54.55\00:37:56.84
And third, that He would
be proclaimed to the world.
00:37:56.87\00:38:00.17
Basically to the
Gentiles, or to the world.
00:38:00.20\00:38:02.47
And of course, that
took place, we'll notice,
00:38:02.50\00:38:04.41
on the day of Pentecost.
00:38:04.44\00:38:06.23
Notice Acts 24 and verse 14.
00:38:06.48\00:38:09.52
Acts chapter 24 and verse 14.
00:38:09.55\00:38:11.77
It says here, "But
this I confess to you..."
00:38:12.66\00:38:15.72
He's speaking to Felix.
00:38:15.75\00:38:17.27
"This I confess to you,
that according to the Way,
00:38:17.51\00:38:20.51
which they call a sect, so I
worship the God of my fathers,
00:38:20.54\00:38:24.43
believing all things
which are written in the Law
00:38:24.53\00:38:28.22
and in the Prophets."
00:38:28.25\00:38:30.09
Who is the center of
the Old Testament, folks?
00:38:30.12\00:38:32.53
The very New Testament says that
the center of the Old Testament;
00:38:32.94\00:38:36.63
of the Law, of the Prophets,
of the writings, of the Psalms,
00:38:36.81\00:38:40.72
is none other than
Jesus Christ Himself.
00:38:40.75\00:38:44.56
Now I want you to take
out the sheet that says,
00:38:46.00\00:38:48.36
"Moses and Christ."
00:38:48.39\00:38:50.53
"Moses and Christ."
00:38:51.07\00:38:52.13
That's what was given out.
00:38:52.16\00:38:53.19
It was incomplete
yesterday when we gave it out,
00:38:53.22\00:38:55.19
but this morning you
received a complete copy of it.
00:38:55.22\00:38:58.44
"Moses and Christ."
00:38:58.47\00:39:00.50
This is an interesting document.
00:39:01.67\00:39:03.58
And I'm not going to read all
of the verses in the document,
00:39:04.56\00:39:07.30
because it would
take us two hours just to
00:39:07.33\00:39:09.35
read all the verses.
00:39:09.38\00:39:10.42
I want you just
to get the picture.
00:39:10.45\00:39:12.43
See, in this class all
we can do is give hints
00:39:13.10\00:39:15.82
and give the picture.
00:39:16.22\00:39:17.69
And then you have to go
and you have to work your way
00:39:17.72\00:39:20.05
through this material.
00:39:20.08\00:39:21.34
There is a lot of material here.
00:39:21.37\00:39:24.00
And it's going to take
you months to negotiate it.
00:39:24.14\00:39:26.74
But I hope that the
class will inspire you to say,
00:39:26.99\00:39:29.99
"Hey, I've got to go
through this material.
00:39:30.02\00:39:31.45
This is exciting stuff."
00:39:31.48\00:39:32.76
You know, if that happens,
the class was a success.
00:39:32.79\00:39:36.41
If you were just here
during this week and you heard
00:39:36.71\00:39:39.60
all these things and
said, "Wow, this is great.
00:39:39.63\00:39:41.02
This is wonderful."
00:39:41.05\00:39:42.08
And you go home and you never
look at this material again,
00:39:42.11\00:39:44.54
then you've cheated yourself.
00:39:44.57\00:39:46.99
You know, the big fee that
you paid to take this class
00:39:47.82\00:39:51.36
will be wasted.
00:39:52.03\00:39:53.39
And I'm being
facetious, of course.
00:39:53.68\00:39:55.44
Now let's go to this
document, "Moses and Christ."
00:39:56.91\00:40:00.80
In Deuteronomy 18:15-18,
God promised to send another
00:40:01.73\00:40:06.86
prophet like Moses.
00:40:06.89\00:40:08.52
But greater than Moses.
00:40:09.07\00:40:11.31
You can read that passage.
00:40:11.84\00:40:13.27
Acts 3:22-26 and Hebrews 3:1-5,
00:40:14.02\00:40:19.15
as well as 1
Corinthians 10:1-4...
00:40:19.56\00:40:21.86
We'll take a look
at this very soon.
00:40:22.10\00:40:24.53
In fact, still this
morning in our session.
00:40:24.56\00:40:27.05
...assure us that Jesus
was the promised Prophet.
00:40:27.54\00:40:31.34
In Deuteronomy, we
are told that Israel,
00:40:32.13\00:40:34.90
this is an important principle,
that Israel would be cut off
00:40:35.10\00:40:38.03
if they did not listen to Moses.
00:40:38.06\00:40:39.85
So today, spiritual
Israel would be cut off if they
00:40:40.50\00:40:45.41
do not listen to Jesus.
00:40:45.44\00:40:46.97
The things of Moses
now belong to Jesus.
00:40:47.27\00:40:50.83
In other words,
Moses is a shadow
00:40:50.86\00:40:53.02
or a type of Jesus Christ.
00:40:53.05\00:40:55.46
He's an Old Testament small
scale model of Jesus Christ.
00:40:55.66\00:40:59.42
His experience
illustrates a greater experience
00:40:59.45\00:41:03.79
in the future.
00:41:03.82\00:41:04.96
This great truth was
not understood by the
00:41:05.45\00:41:08.31
Jewish nation in
the days of Christ.
00:41:08.34\00:41:10.42
They trusted Moses,
but they rejected Jesus.
00:41:10.68\00:41:14.30
Paul also deals with this
same theme in 2 Corinthians 3.
00:41:14.57\00:41:18.12
And you have a whole
document, which we're
00:41:18.33\00:41:20.52
not going to be able to cover.
00:41:20.55\00:41:21.94
It's called, A Monumental
Conversion Experience,
00:41:21.97\00:41:25.23
on 2 Corinthians 3.
00:41:25.57\00:41:27.26
This is a very difficult
chapter in the writings of Paul.
00:41:27.29\00:41:31.06
He seems to say that the
law of God was done away with
00:41:31.30\00:41:36.51
because it's the letter,
it doesn't have the Spirit.
00:41:36.54\00:41:38.87
But when you read
it carefully, there's a
00:41:39.49\00:41:42.31
tremendous lesson here.
00:41:42.34\00:41:44.00
And that is, that
there's a great danger
00:41:44.03\00:41:45.95
of reading Moses without Christ.
00:41:45.98\00:41:48.38
Or looking at the
law without Christ.
00:41:49.64\00:41:52.52
It's not that the
law is bad or negative,
00:41:52.80\00:41:55.03
it's that the law
without Jesus is a real problem.
00:41:55.06\00:41:58.94
Because you get all
caught up in legalism,
00:41:58.97\00:42:01.24
which was the
problem of the Jews in the
00:42:01.27\00:42:03.25
days of the apostle Paul.
00:42:03.28\00:42:04.57
So make sure that
you read that document,
00:42:04.60\00:42:07.04
A Monumental
Conversion Experience,
00:42:07.07\00:42:09.69
because it's a careful
study of 2 Corinthians 3
00:42:09.72\00:42:13.20
in the light of the experience
of Moses at Mount Sinai.
00:42:13.23\00:42:16.82
Let me just give you
a little inkling here.
00:42:16.85\00:42:18.72
You remember that Moses
went up to the mountain,
00:42:20.39\00:42:23.48
and he had an intimate
communion with the Lord.
00:42:24.12\00:42:27.89
In fact, Ellen White
describes that God gave the law
00:42:28.33\00:42:32.93
to him, and also gave the
ceremonial sacrificial service.
00:42:32.96\00:42:36.50
In other words, He gave
him the moral law, as well as
00:42:36.53\00:42:38.91
the sacrificial
service; the plan of salvation.
00:42:38.94\00:42:41.28
Which is basically the purpose
of the sacrificial system
00:42:41.38\00:42:45.61
is to take care of the
transgression of the law.
00:42:45.64\00:42:47.95
Because the sacrificial
service makes it possible
00:42:48.84\00:42:51.79
for us to be saved, even
though we've transgressed
00:42:51.82\00:42:53.85
the moral law of God.
00:42:53.88\00:42:55.09
So God revealed to
Moses the law, the moral law,
00:42:55.26\00:42:59.03
as well as the
sacrificial system.
00:42:59.06\00:43:00.75
And when God finished
revealing that to Moses...
00:43:00.78\00:43:03.46
And by the way, Moses
understood that it was
00:43:03.56\00:43:05.65
centered in Jesus Christ.
00:43:05.68\00:43:07.25
He understood that the glory of
the moral law is found in Jesus,
00:43:07.82\00:43:11.25
because Jesus is
the law in person.
00:43:11.28\00:43:13.50
The law is simply a written
reflection of who Christ is.
00:43:13.91\00:43:17.01
But Moses understood that
the law is a reflection of the
00:43:17.04\00:43:19.86
character of Jesus in person.
00:43:19.89\00:43:21.60
And he understood
that the sacrificial system
00:43:21.85\00:43:23.69
wasn't killing a
bunch of animals.
00:43:23.72\00:43:25.26
He understood that
the sacrificial system
00:43:25.29\00:43:26.97
pointed to
salvation in Jesus Christ.
00:43:27.00\00:43:28.85
He saw the glory in
the Old Testament system.
00:43:28.88\00:43:31.56
And so when he comes
down from the mountain,
00:43:32.33\00:43:34.12
because he talked
with God face to face
00:43:34.22\00:43:36.18
and he received
this glorious light,
00:43:36.21\00:43:38.14
what happened with his face?
00:43:39.18\00:43:40.80
Oh, his face was
shining like the noon day sun.
00:43:41.27\00:43:44.91
And so the people, when they saw
the face of Moses, they said,
00:43:45.66\00:43:48.04
"Moses, what a wonderful glory."
00:43:48.14\00:43:50.46
No. What did they do?
00:43:51.13\00:43:53.02
They said,
"Moses, cover the glory."
00:43:53.42\00:43:56.04
They wanted Moses, but
they didn't want the glory.
00:43:56.57\00:43:59.27
Because they rejected...
00:44:01.80\00:44:02.89
In other words, they rejected
Jesus but they accepted Moses.
00:44:02.92\00:44:06.88
Are you following me?
00:44:07.83\00:44:08.86
And Paul says that is
a veil over their heart.
00:44:09.43\00:44:12.73
Their hardness of their heart.
00:44:12.76\00:44:14.25
But he says, but when
they are converted to the Lord,
00:44:14.28\00:44:16.88
the veil will be removed
and they will see the glory
00:44:16.91\00:44:20.22
on the face of Moses.
00:44:20.25\00:44:21.70
That is, on the
writings of Moses.
00:44:21.73\00:44:23.42
All of that is in that material.
00:44:23.83\00:44:25.54
That's why I say read it.
00:44:26.00\00:44:27.58
The materials that you're going
to receive, 500 plus pages,
00:44:28.09\00:44:30.70
read the material.
00:44:30.98\00:44:32.40
It's got really,
really important things.
00:44:32.43\00:44:35.18
Now the story of
Moses is to be understood
00:44:35.38\00:44:37.91
as the continuation of
the warfare between the
00:44:38.23\00:44:41.40
serpent and the seed.
00:44:41.43\00:44:42.64
The same four elements
that are found in Genesis 3:15
00:44:43.82\00:44:47.23
are also present in the
story of Moses and the Exodus.
00:44:47.26\00:44:50.35
If you want more on this, I
have 52 one hour presentations
00:44:50.54\00:44:53.47
on Genesis.
00:44:53.50\00:44:54.60
And I show how you have this
pattern of these four elements
00:44:56.50\00:44:59.92
of Genesis 3:15 all
throughout the Scriptures,
00:44:59.95\00:45:02.22
of course
culminating in Revelation 12.
00:45:02.25\00:45:04.38
See, the text to
which Genesis 3:15 pointed
00:45:05.57\00:45:09.31
is in Revelation chapter 12.
00:45:09.34\00:45:11.00
What are the four elements?
00:45:12.60\00:45:13.96
First of all, a woman.
00:45:13.99\00:45:15.43
Who's the woman in
the story of Moses?
00:45:18.15\00:45:20.21
Jochebed.
00:45:20.74\00:45:21.89
Do you have a seed of the woman?
00:45:22.53\00:45:25.75
Who is it?
00:45:25.78\00:45:26.81
Moses.
00:45:27.03\00:45:28.12
Do you have a dragon?
00:45:28.68\00:45:29.81
Do you know that
in Ezekiel 29 verse 3,
00:45:30.66\00:45:33.13
Pharaoh was
called the great dragon?
00:45:33.16\00:45:35.11
Hmmm, interesting.
00:45:35.37\00:45:36.69
And do you have enmity?
00:45:37.43\00:45:38.83
You have enmity of
Pharaoh against Moses.
00:45:39.55\00:45:41.56
Are you with me?
00:45:43.00\00:45:44.05
Is this the same picture
that we find in Genesis 3:15?
00:45:44.67\00:45:49.07
Same picture.
00:45:49.91\00:45:50.94
And you find it in the
story of Cain and Abel too.
00:45:51.31\00:45:53.66
You find it all
throughout the Old Testament.
00:45:54.56\00:45:56.35
Interesting.
00:45:56.41\00:45:57.44
You know the
story of Cain and Abel.
00:45:58.20\00:45:59.38
Do you have the four
elements in that story?
00:45:59.41\00:46:01.13
You know, when God said
to the serpent, He said,
00:46:01.16\00:46:03.96
"I will put enmity
between you and the woman,
00:46:03.99\00:46:06.01
between her seed and your seed.
00:46:06.04\00:46:07.39
He shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise His heel."
00:46:07.85\00:46:10.29
The devil says, "Uh-oh, a seed
is going to come to the world.
00:46:10.32\00:46:13.42
And that seed is
going to crush my head."
00:46:13.65\00:46:16.36
So he made up his mind at
that moment that he was not
00:46:17.14\00:46:19.50
going to allow
that seed to come.
00:46:19.53\00:46:20.98
And so you enter the
story of Cain and Abel.
00:46:22.32\00:46:24.68
Very interesting story.
00:46:25.67\00:46:26.89
Do you have a woman in
the story of Cain and Abel?
00:46:27.91\00:46:29.94
Who is the woman?
00:46:30.40\00:46:31.49
Eve.
00:46:31.93\00:46:33.06
And you have two seeds, right?
00:46:34.21\00:46:35.87
Yeah, you do have
two seeds. Two sons.
00:46:38.44\00:46:40.30
But one is a good seed,
and the other one, what?
00:46:41.98\00:46:44.36
Whose seed is the other one?
00:46:45.27\00:46:47.38
The other one is
the devil's seed.
00:46:48.45\00:46:49.72
In a moment I'm going to give
you a text that proves that.
00:46:49.75\00:46:51.76
So you have a seed.
00:46:52.49\00:46:53.73
Which, by the way, is Abel.
00:46:55.52\00:46:56.77
And the devil says, "Oh
Abel, he's the one that's
00:46:56.80\00:46:58.58
going to fulfill Genesis 3:15.
00:46:58.61\00:47:00.26
So I've got to get him killed."
00:47:00.29\00:47:01.45
So what does he do?
00:47:01.48\00:47:02.51
He rises enmity of Cain against
Abel, and he has Cain kill Abel.
00:47:03.43\00:47:07.42
So is there enmity?
00:47:08.63\00:47:09.81
Is there a woman?
00:47:11.98\00:47:13.06
Is there a faithful seed?
00:47:14.30\00:47:15.74
Is there also a devil involved?
00:47:17.66\00:47:19.98
Does he have a seed?
00:47:20.64\00:47:21.95
Yes, and you say,
"Where's the devil there?"
00:47:22.41\00:47:24.36
Well you have to go
to the New Testament.
00:47:24.55\00:47:25.85
Sola Scriptura.
00:47:25.88\00:47:26.94
In 1 John 3 verse 12,
it says, "Not as Cain,
00:47:27.59\00:47:31.82
who was of the wicked
one, and killed his brother."
00:47:31.85\00:47:34.54
So whose seed was Cain?
00:47:35.36\00:47:37.05
Of the wicked.
00:47:37.77\00:47:38.80
And listen carefully, this
teaches a very important lesson.
00:47:38.83\00:47:41.16
And that is, that whose
seed you are is not determined
00:47:41.19\00:47:44.61
by your birth.
00:47:44.64\00:47:45.73
Because both seeds
were born from the woman.
00:47:48.21\00:47:50.38
It's a matter of choice
whose seed you belong to.
00:47:50.58\00:47:53.37
Now let's go back
here to the material.
00:47:54.99\00:47:56.38
So you have a re-enactment of
the story of Genesis 3:15 here.
00:47:56.41\00:48:01.02
Now let's take a look
at the parallels between
00:48:01.05\00:48:03.46
Moses and Christ, without
going to the specific verses.
00:48:03.56\00:48:07.43
Israel was God's
Old Testament bride,
00:48:08.33\00:48:11.46
Jeremiah 6 and verse 2.
00:48:11.84\00:48:13.88
What was the
prophetic fulfillment to this?
00:48:14.66\00:48:17.16
The Christian
church is God's bride.
00:48:18.13\00:48:21.11
Right?
00:48:22.18\00:48:23.21
So in other words,
in the Old Testament
00:48:24.40\00:48:27.17
Israel is God's bride.
00:48:27.20\00:48:28.63
In the New Testament,
the church is God's bride.
00:48:28.66\00:48:31.74
By the way, they are
not two separate brides.
00:48:31.77\00:48:34.16
God is not a bigamist.
00:48:34.19\00:48:35.56
The New Testament
bride is a continuation
00:48:36.59\00:48:38.90
of the Old Testament bride.
00:48:38.93\00:48:40.30
And you say, "How
do you know that?"
00:48:40.79\00:48:42.05
It's very simple.
00:48:42.31\00:48:43.38
Because in Revelation chapter
12 you only have one woman
00:48:43.41\00:48:46.33
that represents both
the Old and New Testaments.
00:48:46.36\00:48:48.60
See, so this idea that God has
two mutually separable peoples,
00:48:50.68\00:48:53.66
Israel is one people and
the church is another people,
00:48:53.69\00:48:55.87
you go to Revelation
12, it doesn't hold water.
00:48:55.90\00:48:58.27
Because the woman exists
before the child is born.
00:48:59.91\00:49:03.01
Right?
00:49:03.60\00:49:04.63
Jesus comes from the
Old Testament church.
00:49:05.43\00:49:07.60
But then after the Child is born
and ascends to God's throne,
00:49:08.38\00:49:11.83
then the woman flees to
the wilderness for 1260 years.
00:49:12.06\00:49:15.80
Now you're in the New Testament.
00:49:15.83\00:49:16.99
But it's the same woman.
00:49:17.09\00:49:18.44
So God has only one woman.
00:49:19.97\00:49:21.96
And this woman has two
stages; the Old Testament stage
00:49:22.86\00:49:25.21
and the New Testament stage.
00:49:25.24\00:49:26.52
Are you with me or not?
00:49:26.55\00:49:27.61
So Israel was God's
Old Testament bride,
00:49:28.34\00:49:30.23
the church, the
Christian church is God's bride.
00:49:30.26\00:49:33.15
Historical root;
Israel was in bitter bondage
00:49:34.07\00:49:37.81
to the Egyptians, correct?
00:49:37.84\00:49:39.55
Prophetic fulfillment;
God's people were in
00:49:41.35\00:49:43.49
spiritual bondage to sin.
00:49:43.52\00:49:45.37
You can read those
verses there in John 8.
00:49:46.26\00:49:49.14
Jesus says whoever
is a slave, you know,
00:49:49.55\00:49:52.25
whoever serves
sin is a slave to sin.
00:49:52.28\00:49:55.40
So there's the
symbolism of slavery.
00:49:56.43\00:49:58.47
Just like Israel was
literally in slavery,
00:49:58.50\00:50:00.96
God's people were
in spiritual slavery.
00:50:01.31\00:50:04.42
Historical root; the
children of Israel were slaves
00:50:05.48\00:50:08.75
of the great dragon, right?
00:50:08.78\00:50:10.34
Pharaoh.
00:50:10.97\00:50:12.00
How about the fulfillment,
the prophetic fulfillment?
00:50:13.14\00:50:15.51
The enemy of God's
people, that is of the woman
00:50:16.02\00:50:19.24
and the Child, was what?
00:50:19.27\00:50:20.86
A fiery red dragon, who's
also called the great dragon.
00:50:21.59\00:50:24.87
Historical root;
God's people were crying out
00:50:25.90\00:50:28.93
in pain for deliverance.
00:50:28.96\00:50:30.73
Prophetic fulfillment;
the woman was in travail
00:50:32.17\00:50:35.49
crying out to bring to
the world the Deliverer.
00:50:35.52\00:50:38.30
Was the woman crying
out in Revelation chapter 12
00:50:38.92\00:50:41.32
for the Deliverer?
00:50:41.35\00:50:42.63
She was, like Israel was
crying out for a Deliverer.
00:50:42.66\00:50:46.92
Historical root; a
deliverer was born to a woman.
00:50:47.94\00:50:51.90
Jochebed.
00:50:52.67\00:50:53.70
Prophetic fulfillment; a
man Child was born to a woman.
00:50:55.51\00:50:58.90
Mary.
00:50:59.45\00:51:00.63
Historical root; Pharaoh feared
that he would lose his throne
00:51:02.55\00:51:06.14
if he allowed the child to live.
00:51:06.81\00:51:08.72
Prophetic fulfillment;
another king who had the same
00:51:09.58\00:51:12.60
character as Pharaoh feared
that he would lose his throne.
00:51:12.63\00:51:16.17
Historical root;
Pharaoh killed the male infants,
00:51:17.94\00:51:21.42
but Moses was
protected in Egypt.
00:51:21.74\00:51:24.19
Prophetic fulfillment;
Herod killed the male infants,
00:51:25.95\00:51:28.94
but Jesus was
protected in Egypt.
00:51:29.29\00:51:31.51
Of course, all of
this is coincidence.
00:51:31.86\00:51:33.81
There's no coincidence.
00:51:37.37\00:51:38.40
See, this is typology
centered in Jesus Christ.
00:51:38.43\00:51:43.55
Historical root; God called
Moses and Israel out of Egypt.
00:51:44.77\00:51:48.75
Prophetic
fulfillment; after Herod died,
00:51:49.58\00:51:51.88
Jesus was called out of Egypt.
00:51:51.91\00:51:53.83
"Out of Egypt I called My Son."
00:51:53.86\00:51:55.76
Historical root; the death
of the lamb was the sign of
00:51:57.83\00:52:01.47
Israel's
deliverance from bondage.
00:52:01.50\00:52:03.37
Prophetic fulfillment;
Before His baptism, Jesus was
00:52:04.04\00:52:06.94
introduced by John
as the Lamb of God.
00:52:06.97\00:52:09.72
And Jesus is our Passover
who was sacrificed for us.
00:52:09.93\00:52:13.45
Is it the same
sign of deliverance?
00:52:14.73\00:52:16.68
Yes, but Jesus is
greater than the type.
00:52:17.20\00:52:20.40
Historical root;
Israel and Moses were baptized
00:52:20.97\00:52:23.94
in the Red Sea.
00:52:23.97\00:52:25.30
Were they?
00:52:26.16\00:52:27.19
You can read it in 1
Corinthians chapter 10.
00:52:27.65\00:52:29.45
Prophetic fulfillment; Jesus
was baptized in the Jordan River
00:52:29.72\00:52:33.49
as a pattern for the
baptism of His people.
00:52:33.52\00:52:36.27
Historical root; Moses fasted
for 40 days on the mountain.
00:52:37.35\00:52:40.95
Prophetic fulfillment;
Jesus fasted in the wilderness
00:52:41.74\00:52:44.09
for 40 days, and He was
taken to a high mountain.
00:52:44.12\00:52:47.43
Historical root; God
gave Moses and the people
00:52:48.57\00:52:51.07
the law of the
kingdom from a mountain.
00:52:51.10\00:52:53.16
Prophetic fulfillment; Jesus
gave the law of His kingdom
00:52:53.66\00:52:56.44
in the sermon on the mount.
00:52:56.47\00:52:57.91
Historical root; the face
of Moses shone on the mountain
00:52:58.81\00:53:02.32
as God spoke with him.
00:53:02.35\00:53:03.77
Prophetic fulfillment; the
face of Jesus shone upon the
00:53:04.81\00:53:08.14
mount of transfiguration
as He heard the voice of God.
00:53:08.17\00:53:11.03
And Moses was
actually present in person
00:53:11.24\00:53:13.53
when the Father spoke to Jesus.
00:53:13.56\00:53:15.09
Type and antitype.
00:53:16.38\00:53:17.90
Historical root; Moses
interceded for his people
00:53:18.39\00:53:21.68
offering his life
in place of theirs.
00:53:21.71\00:53:23.98
Prophetic fulfillment;
Jesus is the great Intercessor
00:53:25.41\00:53:27.94
who was willing to forfeit
His own life to save His people.
00:53:27.97\00:53:30.78
And Ellen White
makes a parallel between
00:53:31.14\00:53:32.72
the intercession
of Moses on the mount
00:53:32.75\00:53:34.97
and the intercession of Jesus
Christ in favor of His people.
00:53:35.00\00:53:38.13
Historical root; Moses
brought water from a rock,
00:53:39.10\00:53:42.27
manna from heaven, and raised
up a serpent in the wilderness.
00:53:42.59\00:53:46.30
Jesus is the rock
from whom water springs,
00:53:46.93\00:53:50.74
Jesus is the living
manna that fell from heaven,
00:53:51.20\00:53:54.44
and Jesus is the serpent that
was raised in the wilderness.
00:53:54.47\00:53:58.36
Historical root; Moses
organized the twelve tribes
00:53:59.02\00:54:02.63
and established seventy elders.
00:54:02.66\00:54:04.61
Fulfillment; Jesus established
twelve and sent out seventy
00:54:05.52\00:54:11.01
to help Him in His work.
00:54:11.04\00:54:12.24
You think this is coincidence?
00:54:12.27\00:54:14.10
There's no way
this is a coincidence.
00:54:14.96\00:54:17.12
This is typology.
00:54:17.42\00:54:18.94
Historical root; Moses
was tested by the constant
00:54:19.63\00:54:23.23
opposition of the
Jewish leaders and the people.
00:54:23.26\00:54:25.82
Of course Jesus wasn't, right?
00:54:25.85\00:54:28.99
Prophetic fulfillment;
Jesus was opposed constantly
00:54:31.35\00:54:34.46
by the Jewish
leaders and by the people.
00:54:34.49\00:54:37.45
Historical root; Moses
died, was buried by God,
00:54:38.00\00:54:41.73
and was resurrected by
Christ and ascended to heaven.
00:54:41.76\00:54:44.72
Prophetic fulfillment;
Jesus died, was buried,
00:54:44.75\00:54:48.39
resurrected, and
ascended to heaven.
00:54:48.42\00:54:51.09
So the story of Moses is
not the end of the story.
00:54:53.61\00:54:58.79
It really is a typology that
points forward to Jesus Christ.
00:54:59.51\00:55:05.48
Now let's read
the final paragraph.
00:55:05.68\00:55:07.35
We'll come back to this a
little bit later to explain
00:55:07.38\00:55:09.84
in a fuller way.
00:55:09.87\00:55:11.46
Deuteronomy 28 describes
the blessings and cursings
00:55:12.21\00:55:16.55
of the covenant.
00:55:16.58\00:55:17.66
The blessings would
come if Israel obeyed,
00:55:18.50\00:55:21.12
and the curses would
come if Israel disobeyed.
00:55:21.57\00:55:24.41
Israel miserably failed
the test, so Jesus came to
00:55:25.46\00:55:29.86
redeem the history of Israel.
00:55:29.89\00:55:31.44
Do you know that Jesus came
to live the history of Israel
00:55:33.09\00:55:35.39
in Himself, to redeem the
history where Israel failed.
00:55:35.42\00:55:39.18
As a second Moses, He went
over the same ground as Israel.
00:55:40.01\00:55:44.13
But in contrast to them, He
perfectly obeyed the covenant.
00:55:44.94\00:55:47.90
And thus gained the
victory where Israel failed.
00:55:48.23\00:55:51.29
It is significant that
Jesus quoted three passages
00:55:52.23\00:55:55.49
to the devil on the
mount of transfiguration.
00:55:55.52\00:55:57.55
And all of them
came from Deuteronomy.
00:55:57.84\00:56:00.10
It speaks about the
wilderness wanderings.
00:56:01.32\00:56:03.32
In spite of the fact
that Jesus perfectly obeyed,
00:56:03.78\00:56:06.64
He bore the
curses of the covenant,
00:56:07.05\00:56:09.63
because He was
bearing the guilt of Israel.
00:56:09.89\00:56:12.04
He not only lived the
life of Israel the way it
00:56:12.07\00:56:14.50
should have been, but He bore
the curses of Israel as well.
00:56:14.53\00:56:17.69
He bore the curses
of the covenant because
00:56:19.58\00:56:21.34
He was bearing
the guilt of Israel.
00:56:21.37\00:56:22.98
Jesus lived and suffered in
our place, and thus exhausted
00:56:23.01\00:56:26.44
the covenant curses.
00:56:26.47\00:56:27.93
But we must accept Him to
personally receive the blessing.
00:56:28.45\00:56:32.52
For those who are in Christ,
all the curses of the covenant
00:56:32.93\00:56:36.47
have been paid for.
00:56:36.50\00:56:37.78
This is the meaning of baptism.
00:56:38.65\00:56:40.34
In baptism, God
reckons us dead in Christ,
00:56:40.74\00:56:44.97
all our history
is erased in Christ,
00:56:45.00\00:56:47.91
and His history
is reckoned as ours.
00:56:47.94\00:56:51.25
With His history
reckoned to my account,
00:56:51.68\00:56:54.18
I will want to live
a holy life for Him.
00:56:54.21\00:56:57.72
What a tremendous concept.
00:57:00.02\00:57:01.47
Jesus not only lived the
life that Israel should live,
00:57:02.90\00:57:06.60
and that we should live, He
also died and suffered the curse
00:57:07.03\00:57:10.56
that the law has for
those who are disobedient.
00:57:10.59\00:57:13.13
In other words,
Jesus did for the world,
00:57:13.23\00:57:16.61
not only for Israel, but
for the church, for the world,
00:57:18.40\00:57:21.18
He did what we could
not do for ourselves.
00:57:21.21\00:57:24.37
What a wonderful
Savior and God we serve.
00:57:24.66\00:57:26.60
How wonderful it is to see
Christ in the Old Testament.
00:57:26.63\00:57:29.99
Because it
becomes a living book.
00:57:30.34\00:57:32.30
It lights up, and we see Jesus,
the Author and the Finisher
00:57:32.48\00:57:38.25
of our faith.
00:57:38.40\00:57:39.93
I hope that this has been
inspiring in leading us to
00:57:40.44\00:57:43.41
follow Jesus closer every day.
00:57:43.45\00:57:46.13
